A wonderful 2013 Labour Long Weekend with Zoey and Timmy

A wonderful   2013 Labour day Long Weekend with Zoey & Timmy

These are names of two pets – one a big dog with orange/white coat (Zoey) and another a beautiful furry black cat (Timmy).   These are pets of our neighbours – a good patriotic family . The husband served in Afghanistan with the Canadian Army   with a dedication that is the mark of our Canadian Army personnel.

A loving family – who have a daughter who had to go to her university at Waterloo, Ontario during the Labour day long week-end.

So parents decided to drive her there and bring her comfort in settling down at her place in Waterloo.

The pets   were to be left home.   So to take care of them they approached us if we can look after them when they are away on the road – from Thursday to Sunday .   Of course we said yes . First because it is our nature to help others – specially our neighbours – if we can . Second this neighbour had always been helpful to us whenever we needed any help.

Only hitch to this plan was that in our 73 years of life on this earth – we had never had a pet nor we are familiar with dogs and cats – their habits and needs . To a certain extent, we are also a bit scared of dogs if not of cats. Complicating the situation is our fear of allergy   – specially from Cat’s hair .

But we (both my wife and I ) were proud to be asked – to take care of two pets – when the family was away.

The situation was exciting – as the trust shown by our neighbours in their pets to behave well when they were away – remember two diverse specimen of pets – one a dog and the other a cat – each to co-habit with another without trying to tear   each other out in the absence of their human masters. Also trust shown for their neighbours – us – not from the same cultural background and sufficiently senior in age to take care of their precious pets in their absence.

We duly said yes – our main task was to take the pets out each day in the morning for about 2 hours and in the evening also for about the same number of hours. Along with that , to check the fullness of feed dishes and water bowls .   A note (on a small white board)   in the neighbours living room mentioned that Zoey be offered doggy treat as thought necessary   (my words).

Well Thursday  (2013 August 29) – just after lunch or around that time – the neighbours were on the road taking their daughter for university life in Waterloo.

The main responsibility to check on the pets and bringing them outdoors fell on me while wife providing support (moral and otherwise) with great happiness and satisfaction in her heart.

Thursday 2013 August 29

Being a bit apprehensive as to how the pets will respond to me, on Thursday morning , I had gone over to neighbours (before their departure to Waterloo) to get proper instructions as what care needs to be looked after. At that time , I got the opportunity to pat Zoey and also to tickle the cat (Timmy) on his tummy – in that way both pets got to know my body smell and me .

I have not known Timmy (the cat) before -in fact did not know that the neighbours had a cat . I knew Zoey – the big amazing and sweet dog.   Mostly had communicated with him across the fence from our backyard .   I do not remember I had ever gone out and patted him – I may have earlier – over the last couple of years but I cannot recall such   connection.

4.15 pm   – went to the neighbours’   house   – from the backdoor ( crossing the porch) . The backyard is fully fenced   with automatic latch door .

Both pets were lazing around in the house – very peacefully – in the corridor behind the back door.

The evening – outdoors – was warm and somewhat humid.   The pets were just compliant – no whimper of protest or anything that can frighten me.

NOTE:   As a precaution, I did not wear my sandals but shoes – in case there was any untoward menace from the pets – especially from the dog.   Nada.

They were on their the best   behaviour and an example of friendliness between themselves and towards me.

I surveyed the food dishes and water bowls – they were still full – a little had been eaten as yet.

The pets   were let out in the backyard.  Timmy had to be lifted out   but Zoey did come out by himself – all proud and sure of himself.

In the backyard , they just lounged around – not much activity . I guess they were missing the family

I went back at 5.15 pm and   let them in the house – they were ready near the backdoor to get in.

Friday 2013 August 30

9.20 am – went in the morning to let both Zoey and Timmy out in the yard. I found both of them waiting inside near the back door – to come out in the yard. They came out on the porch very nicely. I went in the house to check on the food consumed . At that time I saw the note on the small white board against one wall of the living room – saying that Zoey can be given a treat during the day.

I searched for the doggie treat and found in the kitchen two bags – one for doggie Milk Bones and another   of Chicken strips   – suppose to help dogs for their joints etc.

When they were outdoors, Jackie had gone out in our yard to watch over the pets and at that time she found Zoey was having a pow-wow   (communication by barking ) with another dog in the park . He seems to be enjoying the experience.

I went back to neighbours at 11.20 am and let the pets in the house. They were both quite ready to get in the house – sitting on the porch near the back door waiting for me.

I gave Zoey his treats for the day .

During the afternoon the sky had become dark and there was some rain outburst but then there was a constant rain falling. So at 5.00 pm when I went to have the pets come outdoors – it was raining and neither Zoey nor Timmy wanted to come outdoors . I decided to let them remain indoor at that time.

I went back at 6.00 pm and at that time I stroke both Timmy and Zoey . Timmy just rolled over for me to stroke (tickle) him more on his belly .   At that time I also gave Zoey a few treats of Milk Bones and a couple of chicken strips.   They definitely wanted to remain indoor. So I let them as outdoor was wet .

Saturday   2013 August 31

8.30 am – went in the morning to let both Zoey and Timmy out in the yard. Zoey was ready waiting inside near the door – so I let him out. I could not see Timmy around . It took a few minutes to find him – he was well ensconced on the big bed – in the corner where two walls meet and close to the walls.

It took a while to coax him out – I had to carry him outdoors .

Cat food and water in the dish near the door ( to the living room) were finished and also over the drawer too. I filled those and at the same time I topped the dog food in the bowl near the fireplace.

At about 10.00 am Jackie went in our backyard to see that both pets are doing okay.   She found both of them quiet and lazing on the porch – seem to her that they were sort of sad – for I guess missing the their human family.

I went back at 10.30 am   let them in the house – they were ready near the backdoor to get in.

I went back at around 1.45 pm to let the pet out for the afternoon as we had to go out for a social in the evening   .

Zoey   was sprawled on his cushion in the bedroom and came out on calling but   Timmy was not found immediately.   I had to look around and almost got panicked where he had gone . I am sure he did not go in the basement as I had closed the door the previous day and he cannot go upstairs as all doors there were also closed too.   But in my third look around, I found Timmy perched so quietly over the sofa (along the window in the front of the living room) backstand.   So I had to coax him and carry Timmy outdoors to join Zoey there.

At about that time I saw some pet turd on the living room carpet . ( possibly due to rain – they did/could   not go outdoors on Friday evening)

Also   gave Zoey some treat outdoors   . The afternoon was pleasant – not much hot – a bit cloudy .

Brought them back indoor at about 4.15 pm . They were glad to come indoor . Again Zoey got some treat of Milk Bones and Chicken strips.

Also at that Time I removed the turd  from the carpet and a couple of other places in the corridor and flushed that in the toilet .

Sunday 2013 September 01

9.00 am – went in the morning to let both Zoey and Timmy out in the yard. I found both of them waiting inside near the back door – to come out in the yard.

Went back at 11.00 am and brought the pets indoors. Patted and stroked them . Timmy liked that .

Also gave Zoey his treat   – all the last remaining Milk Bone and Chicken strips

Said adieus to the most lovely pets   – now they wait inside for their human family to return back from Waterloo.

At 3.00 pm I phoned (from Petawawa – where we had gone to attend the FSNA picnic) the neighbours on their home phone –   they were back from Waterloo at about 1.30 pm and glad to be united with their pets   after a sojourn/separation   of   about 3 days .

Conclusion:

This had been a wonderful experience and an excellent learning about pets and the joy one derives from   having them.   All our 73 years of age -we never had pets and never before baby sat or looked after any pets but these two (Zoey and Timmy – a dog and cat) showed how living beings can live together   and enjoy each other.

I appreciate this opportunity which came suddenly and we took the assignment with open hearts and without any fear – though we were not sure how the pets will take us – but they were magnificent and obedient and showed no displeasure being looked after by me directly and Jackie otherwise.

Another Opportunity to look after Zoey & Timmy

Note: after the neighbours return home on Sunday 2013 September   01- next day they were at our home to thanks us – at that time they were given a copy of his article.

On subsequent day, they mentioned that they liked the article   except that they were the ones who kept the basement door open – for Timmy’s litter box was in basement.

Becoming the pets’ grandparents.

Thursday 2013 September 12 – the neighbour came over to our home – he wanted us to look after the dog & cat ( Zoey & Timmy) during the upcoming week-end  as they were going to Brockville .

So it fell on me to bring Zoey & Timmy out of the house on Saturday   2013 September 14 and see that theya re well fed etc.

Book Reading -Miscellaneous Books Read (2013)

I have followed to continue reading books in 2013 starting from the New year day .

As it is my wish to keep to lighter books and refrain from reading serious books on philosophy, history, political and social issues – though at times I will read these . Mostly I like mystery books.

The year started with re-reading the book by Ken Allen titled ” Deadly Endplay” – this is a mystery book about a murder but based on a member of a Duplicate Bridge Club in Pemberton ( a fictional town – in north Ontario)> The book has many valuable bridge plays with techniques – which can be useful to upgrade one’s bridge playing.

After that I completed reading of the following books .

1) A book titled ‘ Three Cups of tea ‘ by Greg Mortenson (an American) and co-authored by David Oliver Relin.   This is a book based on real life – mountaineering by Greg in high Himalayas – based in Pakistan and subsequently failing to complete to climb K2 range of Himalayas   – Greg devoted his time to help build schools specially for girls of the North West Frontier states of Baltistan and Waziristan. Sunsequently he also went over to Afghanisatn to do the same – all recently when large scale  terrorist (Taliban)  war is going on and Americans are really very unpopular there . Very interesting.

2) Agatha Christie book titled ” Passenger to Frankfurt + – a non H. Poirot book.

Thursday  7 February 2013

Finished reading a twin (combined) book

titled   ” Crying Swallow ” by Erle Stanley Gardener – A Parry Mason story and also

– A book titled ” And She Was ” – a novel of suspense – by Alison Gaylin

– A book title   ” State of Wonder ” by Ann Patchett . This book was speed read (means not all words and paras were completely read) but gist and different angles in the book were followed   and understood.

– A book titled ” A Man in Full” by Tom Wolfe .   This book was also speed read (means not all words and paras were completely read) but gist and different angles in the book were followed   and understood.

A touch of “Heaven On Earth” – Christmas 2012 – Family Togetherness

A touch of “Heaven On Earth” – Christmas 2012 – Family Togetherness

Background

Christmas is a time when family and friends gather together   to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ and/or the onset of holidays and welcoming the new year.   Every year our family do get together in Deep River, Ontario – mostly at or just after the Christmas Day but before the New Year day.

As Canadians – even though we are   not of Christian faith – we do celebrate the arrival of Santa and his   elves   during this time bearing lots of gifts for kids and adults. This celebration and putting up a Christmas tree was instituted the first year when we migrated to Canada -in the year 1974 – when our daughter   (Nina) was born during December 1974 in Niagara Falls . Subsequently our son (Sunir) was also born in Niagara Falls during June 1979.

The family moved to Deep River, Ontario in 1986.

This tradition of getting together in Deep River was established in 1990s after both our kids ( Nina -our daughter   and then our son Sunir) went away for further studies . Nina went away to Hamilton first   and then to Toronto to complete her Pharmacy course.   Sunir completed his Computer Software graduation in Ottawa and then completed a Masters degree course in Toronto.

After graduation, both Nina & Sunir established themselves in Toronto for their career – though subsequently Nina & her partner/husband (Sunjay) moved to Deep River area in 2006 and moved along to have a family – first our Granddaughter (Sitara) is born during August 2007 and then our Grandson (Sachin) is born during July 2009.   Both Sitara and Sachin are born in Ottawa – Nina (along with family) travelling to Ottawa for delivery from her home in Mackey (near & west of Deep River).

Sunir however kept himself in Toronto,  got married to Shannon.  Subsequently both became proud parents.  Maya – our Granddaughter – was born during August 2011. Maya is born in Toronto.
So there are now three(3) beautiful grandkids and they have livened up our Senior lives in retirement.

Getting together

It is a common belief that family time together will result in peace and progress. It also brings relief and sense of belonging – especially in the modern world when   nuclear families are proliferating and when jobs and earnings separate siblings and take them away to distant places.   So Maya came from Toronto to Deep River, Ontario on Friday 28 December 2012 to visit and celebrate Christmas and New Year Holidays with her paternal grandparents ( “Ba & Bapuji ” – her dad’s parents ),   her aunt, Nina  ( “foi ” in Gujarati language – her dad’s sister ),  and uncle, Sunjay  ( ” fuva”   in Gujarati language – her ” foi‘s ” husband ) as well as with her cousin sister, Sitara and cousin brother, Sachin.     Maya  is just a baby of only a year and five months old and her cousin Sitara is four (4) Years older than her and her cousin brother Sachin is only   two (2)   years older than her.   There is a two (2) years difference between the three (3) grandchildren.

Maya had been having a tough time recently having an ear ache due to cold and a touch of flu . This was compounded by her mom’s health from a touch of flu (mostly sniffling) and her dad having a  cough.

The visit was a bit shaky as the flu could have kept them in Toronto but the parents figured that it was manageable with intake of medicine and taking as much rest as possible – before the drive to Deep River, en route to Deep River and while at Deep River.

The drive to Deep River was commenced on Thursday 27 December 2012 – with a planned break for a night en route in Huntsville and then come over to Deep River on Friday 28 December – about lunch time.

At Huntsville, Maya   & parents stayed with her great grandparents ( her mom’s maternal   grandparents) . Maya got coddled and loved by both her great grandparents and had a good night’s rest before driving (of course with her parents) to Deep River.

The three grandchildren here in Deep River – one (Maya) a visitor from Toronto and two from the local area (both Sitara and Sachin live at Mackey with their parents -some 25 minutes drive west from Deep River)   but go to school (& day care) at Deep River . Their parents also work in Deep River.

Sitara & Sachin arrived with their dad at their grandparents home on Friday 28 December 2012 just before lunch to meet their cousin Maya as well as   their uncle, Sunir ( ” Mama ” in Gujarati language ) and Auntie, Shannon ( ” Mami ” in Gujarati language) .

Thus the great getting together of the whole Shah family started on Friday 28 December 2012 and was to span over a few days – of holidays and fun – even while Nina was working during the holidays as Pharmacists are needed to be on duty. She however joined in after work – however late that can be.

Fun   & Frolicking

It was kind of exhilarating that the weather behaved during the time the family was together during the holidays. The weather turn out to be normal winter temperature with no snow falling during this time   – snow had already been on the ground (having fallen a couple of days before)   providing a serene white blanket outdoors all over.

During these few days when the family spent together there were few moments which are etched in memory forever. These moments can be dubbed ” heaven on earth” moments as measureable happiness and joy is felt by all – each in his/her own unique way.

Friday – 28 December 2012

On Friday (28 December 2012) arriving from Huntsville,   both Sunir & Shannon were a bit under the weather but Maya was in good spirit.   Maya was almost at home with her Ba and Bapuji whom she had seen about a month before in Toronto.

She remembered them and their identifying title and called her grandma   correctly “Ba” ” Ba” .   She was hugged and coddled and just made comfortable. Both Sunir & Shannon managed to get some rest in the afternoon.

Soon Maya was joined by her cousins Sitara & Sachin who came about 4.00 p.m. with their dad, Sunjay – after their skiing on Mt Martin Ski hill . Both Sitara and Sachin took well with Maya almost instantly and Sachin immediately hugged her . So did Sitara.

They started to play with Maya and try to pass a couple of  stuffed animal to her .  Maya also explored the decorated Christmas tree standing tall in the living room. All three kids just melted in  each other arms.

Both Sitara and Sachin also got coddled by their SunirMama and ShannonMami. This bond between the kids and their uncle and aunt is since the time they were born.  Maya remained a bit aloof from her ” fuva” as she was enveloped by her cousins in playing with her.

The Deep River house was full with the three kids playing and making all kinds of frolicking roundabouts and sounds. They played with various available toys in the Living Room.

Both grandparents were thrilled to see the kids having fun together and mostly left them alone – just providing supervision where needed.

As grandparents we want to make the most of the precious family time we get to spend with our grandchildren.

Of course then all had dinner. The dinner was ” Ragda Patish” – A delicious Gujarati dish prepared by Grandma for the adults and special rice & yogurt curry for the kids.

Maya went to sleep about 7.30 pm – her usual time and after that Sitara & Sachin had an about an hour to play and getting coddled by their SunirMama & ShannonMami.

Sunir played with Sitara and went about normal horsing around and also coddled Sachin – lifting him, bouncing him up and down and just playing with him. ShannonMami read a couple of children books to the kids but mostly Sitara who always likes her Mami to read to her ( books of her choice normally around in her collections at the Deep river home).

Both Sitara & Sachin went back home to Mackey with their dad at about 9.30 p.m.

Nina came over to visit after her work just after 10 p.m. – her workplace (PhramaPlus) stays open late till 10.00 p.m during Christmas Holidays .   Nina had a good ” shooting the breeze ” time with her brother (Sunir) & Shannon and went home to Mackey about 11.00 p.m.

Saturday   29 December 2012

On Saturday   29 Dec –   all spent the day at Deep River and mostly remained indoors within home.

During the day Sitara played Board game with her Mama. All kids , Sunir , Shannon & Sunjay had gone outdoors (in the afternoon) in front of the house to make a snowman & play around in the snow. Maya was coddled by her “fuva” while playing and making snowman outdoors.

All had lunch & dinner together except Nina who was at work at lunch time but managed to join for dinner as her work finished at 6.00 p.m. this day -its being a  Saturday.

After dinner, Christmas and Holiday gifts were exchanged and opened by the excited kids and adults alike.   Many photos and video clips were taken – freezing the happy moments and 2012 family faces/features on multiple digital cameras.

Grandparents were just around –Grandma preparing meals and grandpa just helping around wherever possible either with kids or setting the table for meals.

Spending time with grandchildren is always fun – especially when the whole family is around.  Regardless of what you do together, time with grandchildren is always fun. Whether you are teaching them something new or learning something from them, there’s a special bond between the grandchildren and the grandparents.

Sitara & Sachin had to be coaxed and pleaded before they agreed to get ready to go home to Mackey with their parents at around 9.30 p.m.

Sunday 30 December 2012

Sunday was special day as both Nina and Sunjay had planned to celebrate the family togetherness by having a family party at their home in Mackey.

It was special day as the celebratory meal was to be prepared by Sunjay  – as Nina was at work till 5.00 p.m. Sunjay is a master chef – he has good culinary sense and can whip up very enjoyable testy meals for any occasion.

Maya along with her parents and her Ba/Bapuji arrived at Mackey in the morning around 10.00 a.m.   Maya came in her parents rented car and her Ba/Bapuji came separately in their 2010 Toyoto Corolla car.

Sunjay prepared a sumptuous dinner meal which was supported by grandma’s addition – especially for a great lunch. A glass of wine led to “toasting” each other for best wishes . Both Sitara & Sachin also clicked their glasses with the adults – of course their glasses were filled with a mix of apple juice and water.

During the day Sitara spent time with her Mama – working to build the   3D Ginger Bread puzzle. She also played a board game with him.
Sachin & Maya spent playing with miscellaneous toys scattered around the living room and the kitchen area.

Maya was a free bird – running here & there . Getting into the blue big truck – being pushed around by her dad & also Bapuji.  Sachin also played with his Thomas train toys.

Playing with young kids   – is always exhilarating and joyful and to experience games, music, nature, reading, and other interests in conjunction with a curious young mind.

It was ” heaven on earth ” moment multiple times when enjoying a synergy between young and adults – all the worries and concern of adult life put away – however momentarily.

Again, many photos and video clips were taken on multiple digital cameras.

Maya was put to bed early around 8.00 p.m. while the other two kids stayed up for a little while longer.  Their SunirMama & ShannonMami   stayed the night at Mackey and the grandparents return back to Deep River around 9.30 p.m.

Grandchildren see the world ”” whether near or far ”” in special ways, and through them, grandparents rediscover the joy of visiting and spending valuable quality time with kids & grandkids.

Monday  31 December 2012 – New Year eve

Maya came over to Deep River with her parents after having breakfast with her cousins at Mackey.

She was cuddled, coddled and just loved by her Ba and Bapuji while she was getting ready for a visit to her dad’s friend’s family   ( Nadia – who has 5 kids of her own) in Deep River. Maya has a great time with the kids during her visit.

In the meantime, Sitara and Sachin came over with their dad to spend more time with Maya and their uncle and aunt.

After Maya returned back -she and kids played with each other.  Maya got a bath and Sachin just joined in the bath along with Maya given by his ShannonMami.

After that some creative craft time – all 3 kids were industrious making/decorating 2 Ginger Bread houses – led by ShannonMami & helped by Sunjay.

Nina joined in after work at about 5.00 p.m and all had dinner together.

After that Mistrys along with Kids went to Ron/Diane home to celebrate the arrival of 2013 – while seniors spent time with Sunir/Shannon at home as Maya went to sleep by 8.00 p.m.

By this time both Sunir & Shannon were well   rested and feeling much healthier than when they arrived for holidays at Deep River.

A   contentment in the grandparents hearts was visible and very sweet.

Tuesday 1 January 2013

Happy New Year. All wished an enjoyable and successful new Year to the family members.

Maya returned to Toronto with her parents – stopping en route at Huntsville (at her great grandparents home) for lunch break.

The family time together is momentarily over – all there grandkids had a ball of a time with lots cuddles , hugs and kissed along with gifts to play with   and enjoy.

Prayers were offered by each grandparents   ( nana/nani for Sitara & Sachin and on the other side Ba and Bapuji for Maya)   for thanks to our Guardian Angel for a great and satisfying few days – sort of    ” heaven on earth ” moment for now.

Some Pre & Post – Holidays events

1) Thursday 27 December 2012

Both the Grandparents (Deep River version) were invited for pre-Christmas lunch at their Burmese friends’ (Kay & Zin) home .   Hershi (one of the friends ) also joined in. Kay & Zin have two sons – one (Ken) is now grown up and is in the Canadian Navy.  He was home visiting for the Christmas holidays.

Their other son   – Thit – a teen turning about 18 and doing his   high school at the Mackenzie Community School in Deep River.

Thit has obtained his airplane pilot license   – having got training over the last year or so in Arnprior. His dad also has started the pilot lessons . He also bought a 4 seater-single engine plane – being parked currently at Arnprior Airport.

This shows how much a father loves his son – and support him in his endeavour to better himself   – and which will remain for life time  . There is an embedded fatherly instinct to see his son be successful   and confident in himself.

Kay & Zin have also their parents – Kay’s mother and Zin’s dad living with them in Deep River. Zin’s dad (Joe) is a scholar and a linguist – especially for Sanskrit (   an ancient language of India). All had good time together – building bonds of friendship.

Ken- the elder son had brought gifts (he is residing in Halifax, Nova Scotia) – for each of our three(3) grandkids . That was a very nice gesture on his part and was appreciated immensely.

2)   Thursday 3 January 2013

The Burmese friends came over for dinner on this fine day . Harshi – the other friend also joined in.

Ken came with his special dinner dish – bedeviled eggs – with special spices added. This dish is loved by all.

Every year Ken does make this dish . Hershi made a special Gujarati dish with Yogurt ( Danhi Vada ). Grandma (nani) made Gujarati dinner with dal , rice and Chappaati.

Both Ken & Thit love this Gujarati cuisine. Kay also brought a couple of enchanting salads and other dishes.

Unfortunately, Zin’s dad and Kay’s mom did not come – it was cold outside and they did not feel risking health.

However all had a great meal and camaraderie and enjoyed the company to   warm the hearts.

3)    Wednesday 2 January 2013

This day Sitara & Sachin travelled by car (starting in the evening) to Toronto with their parents   and to spend the night in Huntsville – a break in travel before proceeding to Toronto.   They will return after a week away from home. It is planned to be back on Wednesday 9 January 2013.

They had gone   to London ( Anjali & Avak family) ,   to Niagara Falls & to spend some time in Toronto)

Their going away after a great family get together (just a couple of days before) left a kind of void (a sort of mini Empty Nest feeling) in the grandparents’ (kids nana/nani) hearts-   as the absence of kids’ laughter and play for a week was kind of difficult to bear. It was for a week but felt like they were going away much too long.

 4)   Saturday 12 January 2013

Sitara wanted to spend the day with her nana/nani – so she requested her mom.   Sitara then came over with her mom ( who was working this day in Deep River) – spent the   day with her nana/nani. Sachin did not come as he was still sleeping when his mom left home for work.     Sachin remained home with his dad.

Sitara then in the afternoon joined her nana/nani to a prayer satsang at Ushaben’s home – where chanting to Gods was being done (aided by the Art of Living disciples from Pembroke) . Sitara enjoyed playing (as accompaniment to the satsang songs ) along with other kids – the Indian musical instruments.

She then went home -her mom came over after work at Ushaben’s home to pick her up – after having dinner.

5)   Wednesday 16 January 2013

Sitara’s KG   teacher (Mrs. Cox ) came over to nana/nani home on the evening of Wednesday to borrow the “Snoopy” ice & ice cream maker ( this is a toy ice machine – which makes real ice and ice-cream)   . This toy machine was bought many years ago when Sitara’s mom was a young girl – for her amusement and learning . Also used for Sunir’s fun too when he was growing up.

Mrs. Cox wants to use this machine at Sitara’s KG class on Friday – to demonstrate making of ice and ice-cream.     OH ! how items saved and kept well – can be useful after many years for the children of the original kids.

6)   Thursday   17 January 2013

Sitara went to Ottawa with her parents ( & Sachin) for her annual allergy check-up . It was a very cold day ( – 20 to – 25 degrees C)

They also used the day to enjoy the “Winterlude” happenings in the Capitol.

My friend & bridge partner – Mr. Marcel Heming

Marcel Heming had been my friend and bridge partner since last 6 years – since when I retired (in 2007) from active work and he too had retired at that time .   He retired at a younger age -about 54 at that time while I was 67 when I retired.

Unfortunately , we lost my friend recently at a prime age of 59 . He did not wake from his sleep. What God has planned for us is unknown till it happens .

This is how death was announced by his family in the Valley Funeral Home (deep River, Ontario)   website .

————————-

I wrote an eulogy (as a friend and as his bridge partner) but it remained undelivered at the funeral -due to limited time and it is always helpful and considerate to allow the family (especially his only son – John Paul)   to grieve and speak out his feelings for his dad.   He did deliver a very moving eulogy and spoke about his many memories and proud son to have a caring father.

Here is what I wrote – withheld for a while but now I have decided to publish it on my Web page.

Mr. Marcel Heming         –   Tuesday 23 October 2012

Hi

This is the day I did not expect or envision that I would stand up to mourn the death of my friend, Marcel Heming at his prime age of 59.

Why does he have to go away? He is such a wonderful human being.   This is a “verbatim” quote from my wife – who have had welcomed Marcel in our family circle and spent hours discussing worldly and personal issues with him.

He was younger than me. Many a times, over last few years that I have known him,   I have jokingly teased him for being my son – even though, most appropriately, he was like a younger brother.

Marcel had a big heart and would go out of his way to be useful to all and anyone asking.

Here is a person who was always active and forthcoming to help out and participate in many a local activities.  Over the years , for local Engineering events, Rotary projects , RiverBank project or setting stage for Deep River plays and others, Marcel remained a very dependable partner in many of such activities in our Community .

Marcel is someone who participates and helps out in any Community project where his contribution is welcome/ accepted . He never looked for any reward from his participation.

Whenever   I am stuck or I need an extra hand , Marcel was always there to lift my burden – and always with a smile and camaraderie . He had an excellent mechanical and analytical mind. He was also very handy in using tools. He was proud to have been raised on a farm under difficult circumstances but that gave him all the good character of being reliable, on time and team work .

It is beyond me to describe the gap he has left in my life. When I retired in 2007 , I came across Marcel as a person – who also had just retired at about that time . It seems that we hit it off well from our first “pow-wow ” between new retirees .

I had casually asked him about what would be his retirement activities and probed him about whether he would like to play bridge card game . I said I am looking for a partner and he thought that was a good idea though he did not know much as to how to play Bridge at the time . Mind you he was quite proficient in Euchre. But then we together learnt the Bridge techniques and nuances such that many times we did well together whether in the Duplicate bridge or Social bridge – winning kudos .  In fact last year , we were   only ” hair’s breadth” away from achieving the famous Deep River Rounding Trophy for the Duplicate Bridge.   Truly, in fact both of us were a bit relieved that we did not win the Trophy because the right deserving person (Mr. Ian Towner) clinched that.

I am quite at a loss as I think I have lost an excellent  partner and a friend with whom I have had spent many hours since my retirement – whether it was part of structured activities or otherwise just “to shoot the breeze”. Though we kept our own space and remained occupied with individual activities , we were with each other whenever we thought of doing things together .   There was   quite a bit of understanding   of each other’s life and family – we remained supportive   within the limits of proper etiquette between us.

What the fate has in store, one cannot fathom.

This is the quirk in life that many have to face and with forbearance and the divine strength one needs to pick up the pieces and continue the life.

My and my family’s sincere CONDOLENCES to John Paul and the whole Heming family .

I would like to end by quoting the following – from one of my friends Mr. Gerhard Fuerst ( an American – and a poet)

We can be supportive of each other!

It simply shows that with an attitude of resolve

and determination you can overcome adversity

and you can rise to the top! It does not have to be: sink or swim.

You paddle hard…you float  whenever necessary…and you master and overcome

the waves coming your way! You make the best out of any given situation!

God bless Marcel and a happy journey beyond.

Pravin Shah

————————–

Here is the sequence of events he was found at his home –

1) Saturday 20 October 2012 – a tour/visit of the Murray L Moore Hydro Museum In Pembroke.

He was distinctly not feeling well .   Sat down at few places.     I asked him about that and also can I take him to the hospital. He said he is okay – just tired and then had a few minutes of snooze in the car and said he is feeling better and can drive back to Deep River.

When we came back to Deep River at about 4.30pm- his car was in the driveway – so it seemed all is okay . Being weekend – it was normal not to disturb anyone unless anything specific is needed . On Monday 22 October, after we came back from Ottawa ( by the way that day I lost my wallet in Ottawa) – his car was still there in the driveway . This is normal for Marcel. His telephone is not operative due to slow internet connection – only way one can communicate with him is through e-mails .   So I sent him an e-mail on Monday night -asking how is he doing ? No response.

Next day on Tuesday, I stopped over at his house in the morning about 10.30 am returning from Town completing few errands . Rang the doorbell – no response . After I knocked on the   door – no response.   Sometimes Marcel do not respond if he had fallen asleep or gone for a shower.   Anyway, I thought I will see at Duplicate Bridge in the evening at Lutheran Church on Avon Road. When I arrived at the Duplicate Bridge at about 7.10 pm – I found that Marcel was not there. Everyone was surprised as Marcel is always punctual and also set up the room for Bridge playing . Marcel is the President of the Club – 2nd year running.

Everyone at the Duplicate Club was concerned . So I went away back to his house to find out what happened . Rang the bell, Knocked on the door – no response.   I got really concerned – so I went to the Deep River Police Station . Rest is history.

Office Retirement Party (2007 April 10)

Retirement Party

An Office Retirement Party! Well, it placed a permanent and final seal on my decision to retire. The office organised a party to celebrate my decision to retire after some 25 years at the same company and some 45 years in my professional career spanning between Kenya and Canada. The party was held on the evening of Tuesday 2007 April 10 at Bears Den, a famous establishment in Deep River.

Some 63 persons attended the party paying for an expensive dinner and gifts. My son, Sunir, arrived from Toronto to attend the party. My daughter, Nina, and son-in law, Sunjay also joined in the merriment.

I was pleased at the turn out and was especially thrilled to see my old retired colleagues (when I was with Engineering -Plant Design) also attended. It was good to receive a good send-off with present colleagues, past colleagues and fair number of our East Indian community at the party but the most satisfying was to see your offspring present and revel in the thought of their dad finally parking the work tools down and moving into an enjoyable rest and other meaningful contribution to family and community.

The Master of Ceremony of the evening was Dave L. who had been acting for our past boss (Randy ”“see next para) but has now handed over the rein to new boss Garry Y. I am glad that Garry attended the Party though he is new at the company.

One person who was planning to attend but could not due to severe Flu attack was missed badly. Randy is my immediate past boss and is now in other important assignments within the company. He would not have missed the party but severe Flu attack is something that it was better for him to stay home for his good but also not to transmit this Flu to others. He has sent me his speech electronically which he was hoping to deliver at the party. His sentiments and wishes are accepted with gratitude. (see Randy”™s speech after the write-up)

Ken provided the lead /keynote speech .He is my good friend and colleague for many years. We worked together on many projects since I joined the company. Ken has vast knowledge in his field and has been always very professional in his work within the company. Ken is also a key member of our East Indian community here in Deep River/ Pembroke corridor and always very supportive and leader in all social needs of the community.   I am a bit nervous at his speech, as he was very generous in his praise, which I genuinely know that I do not deserve. My humble thanks to Ken and others who expressed similar sentiments. (see Ken”™s speech after the write-up)

Kannan took the rostrum after that and he provided the evening”™s   “ROAST”. Kannan has the ability to liven the party and his “ROAST” injected different perspective to recognise my passion in life. Thanks. I do not have   a copy of his speech .

Sunir then delivered his speech to provide perspective on his dad”™s shenanigans over the yearsin a very humourous way. It was a delight and broke everyone at party in the “stitches”. (see Sunir”™s speech after the write-up).

Dave U. came forward to hand gifts from all those present and others who could not make it to the party. Dave U. is my successor at the company. He is very professional and has good experience in the type of challenges we meet at the company. He provided some good words and his feedback on my handover to him. The gifts contain a painting by a local artist (the description is provided as part of Dave U. speech provided after the write-up)

Randy”™s speech – Pravin Shah”™s Retirement

2007 April 10

I”™ve known Pravin Shah for many years now.   We first worked together in the early 90s when Pravin was in charge of the plant-engineering group.   Yes Pravin and I go back “many years”.
Looking back over those years I don”™t know what I would have done without him.   Pravin has been my teacher, councillor, technical advisor, and a very close friend.   He kept me out of trouble on many occasions.
Yes I have many memories of Pravin.   His sense of humour is second to none.   I will always remember the many gifts and poems he would provide us at our work Christmas dinners.   He would have us all in stitches.   He would make us play silly games before and after dinner.   He would even make us blow on noisemakers.   There were times I wondered why we were not kicked out of the restaurant.
If I was to describe Pravin to someone who didn”™t know Pravin, I would say that he is:
·                 A family man,
·                 A worldly man,
·                 A well educated man,
·                 A wise man,
·                 A man with a sense of pride in himself, and in the people around him, and
·                 A funny man who always makes you laugh; even when you don”™t want to laugh.
I will miss the times we”™ve had Pravin, but it is time to start a new chapter in your life.   Knowing you as I do, it will be an interesting time.   Have a great retirement Pravin, friend!!

Ken”™s Speech

I joined the company in 1985 in the Plant Design Division. I was the first project engineer on XXXX- X! Soon after I joined the company, there was a hiring freeze and an Activity Value Evaluation was started to see how they could reduce the cost of support services. This AVA freaked me out as they were talking about eliminating jobs and I have decided to move to Waste Management where they created their own work.

Pravin was hired to replace me.   Pravin joined the company one year after I joined in 1986 and life was never the same in the company. There are many attributes of Pravin that are worth mentioning and I would like to touch on a few, limiting myself to 10 of them.

1- The Professional Engineer

I have known Pravin for the last 22 years as professional engineer and colleague. When I was a project manager of XXXX, he was our project lead engineer. I can say, without a doubt, that Pravin has been a professional engineer in every sense of that word. He has been very good at understanding the technical problems and come up with great solutions. Being a design engineer myself in my previous life with Canatom Ltd, I always appreciated Pravin’s insight and advice on engineering matters. However, I must also mention that he exhibited very little tolerance for incompetence, stupidity or pure bull shit from anyone.

2- The service minded man

Pravin is a service mined individual and he served the public in many ways, such as:
– Member of police board in Deep River
– The writer: Regular contributor to newspapers
– Chair of the Algonquin Chapter of PEO
– The poet: Wrote many poems:
“Poetry matters. It matters because, when it works, it is the
truth -sometimes beautiful and inspiring, sometimes ugly and disturbing”.

One thing about Pravin is that he has been passionate about anything and everything he did.

3- The Toastmaster

The CRL Toastmasters Club is celebrating 20th anniversary and both Pravin and I were charter members. We got to know Pravin through his many public speeches and stories.   His great sense of humor was evident in all his speeches. He always came up with unexpected twists and turns in his stories that caught every one by surprise and laughing from beginning to end.

4-           The Wise Man

His name “Pravin” means “skilled expert”.   It seems that his parents gave this name to him on purpose.   In our community Pravin is known as the “wise man”.   He got this title because Pravin has an opinion about any topic and he is always ready with an advice if requested.

5-           The Patriotic Indian

Pravin was born in Kenya. So technically he is not an Indian.     However, without a doubt he is the most patriotic and loyal friend India has ever seen. When it came to any important Indian function such as the Indian Republic Day, he would get hyper and very patriotic.   He will call us to talk about it and even scold us for not feeling the same level of excitement. He will say ‘look I am not even an Indian and I feel so much and what is the matter with you Indians?’

He had been to India a few times. Last time he went to India was in Jan 2006.   One of the reasons he went to India was to trace his ancestry. He found a few new relatives in Mumbai. The shahs are very successful business people and his relatives happened to be also very wealthy. He came back with very high opinion of every thing in India. Everything he has seen or heard was great, sometimes to the point where I started to wonder if he is talking about the same India I know.

In one of the social gathering, he told us that India is much more advanced than the West. I asked what makes him think that. He said, the houses of his relatives were much more luxurious and technologically advanced than anything he has seen anywhere. For example: he said they have automatic curtain openers! You can stay in your sofa and press a button. Chagoog !. The curtain opens and in the evening presses another button. Chagang!   the curtain closes. What can be more advanced than that? He said even the toilet paper was softer than anything he has seen anywhere. Wow! It is like what you see in TV, the bear cubs experiencing softness. I wish I could find some relatives who have that kind of luxuries.

He also wanted to purify his body and soul so he stayed in a religious resort (ashram) for two weeks. In the first week he was only given lemon water to detoxify him and he told us that lost 10 pounds instantly but gained that and more in spirituality.

6-           The business Man
Being a shah, business is in his blood. Pravin and his capable spouse Jackie ran a successful business in Petawawa for a number of years.

7-           The Dancer and Singer

Pravin loves “Dancing and Singing”, even though he is challenged in the area of rhythm and/or tune. This is only to prove that God does not give everything to everyone. God held back a bit on Pravin on this aspect. However, this never discouraged Pravin. When he gets into the swing of things in music or dancing, he gets very excited and his long hands and legs go madly in all directions.     It is something to see and admire.

8-           The Religious and Spiritual man

He is into Meditation and yoga. He has already spotted a place in Nina’s residence for his Yoga practice, however, Nina told me “No way”. He mastered many techniques to deal with protecting himself from suffering. His poems indicate some of the suffering he experienced at AECL during the past 22 years with many things; be it failing infrastructure or bloated bureaucracy.

He used many techniques including lift his soul out of his body so that his soul will not suffer. He called this the “out of body experience“. What is not clear to me is how did he manage to get his soul back without let it wander away?

9-                                 The consoler: He was always there to console people in their time of loss or distress.   He was generous with his time to provide emotional support. He organized prayers, read appropriate readings from spiritual books. It was well appreciated by all.

10-                         The Family man: He loves his family passionately, Jackie, Sunir, Nina and his son in law Sunjay. His caring and talented wife Jackie has always been beside him be it to play background music for his poetry recitals or accompany him on his spiritual retreats.

Pravin, I would like to say that we are fortunate to have met you and your family and your friendship has enriched our lives in many ways.   On behalf my family and our community, I wish you a very happy retirement.

Sunir”™s Speech

I never thought I’d be standing here talking seriously about my dad’s
retirement as if it was actually going to happen. Good lord, he’s been
promising to retire for 10 years. Frankly, I don’t really believe it.
He’s still got six days to change his mind. I don’t know who’s taking
over for him next week, but you’d probably be wise to keep the resume
polished just in case.

Truth be told, it’s half my fault. You see, I’m a software developer.
I graduated in 2002 just as all of you were moaning about how Nortel
was only in a bit of a slump. Now, here I was, on the short end of
the stick trying to figure out what I was going to do with my life at
age 23. Well, I made the only natural decision. I decided to retire,
and I told my dad he couldn’t because he had to support me.

He laughed at that joke the first 30 times, and then he kind of
stopped. Probably a good thing then that I decided that retirement
wasn’t for me. When I politely *informed* him he was free to retire,
he said, “thank you.” Or at least I think he said *thank* you. It
was kind of mumbled.

I suppose I should say a few words about his career. On one hand,
when I was young and he brought his work home, I used to look at
all the schematics and what not and go, wow, that is really cool
and complicated. My dad is a really smart engineer. On the other
hand, I still have to fix his computer every time I come home.
Heck, he only learnt how to set the clock on the VCR last month,
so I’m a little dubious.

Nonetheless, it is true he has done some really interesting work
over his life. When in Kenya, he designed cable cars and water
systems, and became the top civil engineer in the country. He’s
done geotechnical surveys in the middle of an insurgency. He’s
worked on the IAEA protocol on cleaning up after a nuclear disaster.

But the one story I think stands out was one day as a young engineer
he was surveying the Tana river in northern Kenya. As they were
floating down this uncharted river, their boat got stuck on a rock.
Now, the thing with Kenyan rivers is that they are filled with
crocodiles, and the thing about my dad is that he can’t swim.

So, here they are, three engineers, frantically trying to rock the
boat free and not getting very far. Finally, they resolved that
they had to swim. My dad made a quick prayer and put his life
in his guardian angel’s hands. Serenely, he said, well if we have
to swim, we have to swim, but let’s try to shake the boat once more.
With one little jump, the boat shook free, just like that, and disaster
was averted.

The moral of the story is that it pays to have an engineer on staff
with a personal connection to the real powers that be. Of course,
he’s leaving. So, if I were you, I’d call in sick the day after he’s
gone. Without him, there’s likely to be a meltdown.

(Don’t worry, I’m sure he’ll keep you in his prayers.)

Thanks!

Dave U”™s   Speech

Knowing the energy, passion and vitality that drives Pravin ”“ retirement was a difficult decision. To retire is to give up work and although we now say farewell to him we know that his many other passions in life will fulfill his richly deserved retirement.

Although I have not known Pravin as long as most people here , I have learned to value his opinion and know that simple words are not able to properly describe the depth of his achievements.

Warm, friendly and approachable Pravin has been a popular member of our leadership who always displayed his professionalism and passion for his work and like a dog with a bone, would never give up on his convictions.

I can tell you that Pravin has affected the lives of those people he has worked and has developed individuals who later have taken on greater responsibilities elsewhere in the organisation.

And it with this development of people and character that makes this gift so appropriate- let me tell you a little about the artwork by Sharon Girdwood, a local artist.

The story behind it is as follows:

The eagle soars high on the wings of strength and wonder of spirit. As we look up we can see the strength, we can sense the spirit but in order to have it for ourselves we must follow the path. We must climb the waterfall. We start having patience like that of the deer. This will lead us to find courage like a cougar. The bear can offer us respect and combination of these traits will allow us the wisdom of the owl. If we take what we have learned to the wolf he will give us loyalty. Patience, courage, respect, wisdom, loyalty and at long last ”“ we have reached our goal. We now have strength. We now have spirit.

My Response

Dear friends, colleagues and family.

It good to see you all to-nite. I am thrilled to see Alan, Charles. Don and Hardy who had been my colleagues when I joined the company. They are retired for sometime and I am glad to join them. I am also pleased see many of my colleagues from PEO/CNS also present with whom we have many programs to carry forward. I am really touched by the presence of many of my East Indian community members .   Of course, the presence of my recent colleagues provides me boost.

I just turned 67 in age and Congratulations to myself on that achievement.

I really would like to   thank you all for this memorable send-off to next phase of my life.

I am leaving with more satisfied and   achievement in my work in the profession.

I would say that I am okay financially but if need arises you may see the first panhandler at the Deep River Post Office. Just a joke!

Really, I had great time at the company. Good people to work with. Have worked on many exciting projects and other assignments. You may come across me many times in future as you will find my name or signature on many drawings or documents.

I like to thank you all again for this memorable party but I have special thanks to organisers ”“ Lesley, Ann (Anjani), Bonni and Karrie. Also many thanks to both Daves,(Dave U. & Dave L.)

 Pravin Shah

How I turned into a Pujari (a Priest for Hindu faith)

We were invited to participate in a Puja (prayer) gathering at Subhash M. residence in Pembroke on Sunday 2007 April 15. Subhash and his charming wife Prabhaji were celebrating the arrival of their first grandchild (Diya Jyoti). Diya Jyoti was born one month ago to Avanish & Nisha (proud parents) . Avanish is the eldest son of Subhash/Prabhaji. Many Congratulations to the new parents.

This was also the day when Subhash crossed the magic line of 65 years in age. Many Congratulations!

I was asked to prepare something for the Puja (blessings for the young one and also some words for the Senior).

Well it so happened that Subhash/Prabhji’s newly wedded younger son (Rahul) and his  wife (Sangita)had also come from Boston for the occasion. Many Congratulations to the newly wed.

My conversion to Pujari status came inadvertently as I perfomed blessings Sutras (Hindu prayers to Gods) -all in English. The appropriate Sutras fell in my domain  from search in the Internet to varIous Hindu websites and accidently picking up right Sutras for the occasion.

I also developed a  Couplet/Poem   for the baby. This is embedded in the text below which I delivered at the Puja.

This is a day full of pride and joy for which we all offer heartfelt thanks to our GODS ( Sankar, Vidhnu & Brahma ) and their incarnates over the millennia in the land of Bharat.
First, on behalf of all of us who are present in this assembly, I like to congratulate Avanish & Nisha for recently becoming parents to lovely Diya Jyoti. We also congratulate Subhash & Prabhaji for promotion to becoming proud grandparents.
I am so pleased to see Rahul   and his wife, Sangita also here to-day. They have travelled from Boston. Our Congratulations on your recent wedding.

A new baby brings excitement and energy in a household. Diya Jyoti represents a continuum in the Mehta family chain. Our prayers are that she brings wonderful omens of good fortune and success to the whole family.

A Couplet/Poem (by Pravin Shah)

A baby”™s love is freely given.
Diya Jyoti”™s heart bears no preconceived prejudices
She is pure and innocent in her chuckles and smiles.

A baby”™s love is freely given.
Diya Jyoti brings hope, love and joy to all
She is an epitome of calm and cheer in our lives

A baby”™s love is freely given.
Thank you Lord for our precious little one
Help us to relish the blessings you have given us
A baby”™s love is freely given.

Amen

In Indian/Hindu tradition, when baby is born the father will set up a Sacrificial fire for worshipping and offers oblations with the following mantras
” Bringing you up as my daughter in this home of mine, may I be able to maintain a thousand people! May the Goddess of fortune never desert the children and the animals from the child’s line! I mentally transfer to you the vital force that is in me. If I have done any thing wrong – too much or too little in this ceremony, may the all-knowing benevolent Mystic Fire make it just right for me!”    “I put the Earth into you, I put the Sky into you, I put the Heaven into you, I am putting the whole of Earth, Sky and the Heavens into you, my child!”

According to Grihya-sutras, the father murmurs the chants near the ears of the child:“I administer to you, O my child,
The wisdom of the honey, and of ghee
Blessed by god Savitru, the bountiful.
May you live long, under God’s protection,
For hundred autumns to come
!”

After a month the baby is presented to the sun, as the sun (god Savitru) is seen as a very important astrological phenomenon and a reflection of God.

Om ! Shanti ! Shanti !

I also would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Subhash for attaining that magic line of 65 years in age. On behalf of all of us here, we wish Subhash the best of everything for the day but also for many more years to come.

The following poems I wrote earlier, I believe are appropriate for the occasion. I believe lots of inner struggle goes in our minds at the time when we attain mature age

Destiny

Meandering thru life
Picking up this and that
Bobbing high and low
Going sideways
Here I am wondering where I am
What for and why?
Kids have flown the coop
Empty quiet living room
Internet contact to the world
Just meandering thru life
Someday my ship will arrive
That I guess is the destiny.

                                                THE MAGIC LINE
The 65 years of life age is the magic imaginary line
That imaginary line of dependence to independence
65 years of life rushed by with some ups and some downs
This is the license to be grumpy, grouchy and irritable
An air of conquer and   “I don”™t care” attitude
Sit at home and collect my CPP, OAS   & free medicines?
Fewer taxes to governments for this and for that
The hidden traps unseen when crossing over the magic line
Retirement takes you away from colleagues and friends
The old abode suddenly becomes too large to manage
Your kid”™s memory is still intact though they left the coop
The struggle to decide where to move drives you mad
Downsize, remove clutter, have a hobby goes the refrain!
Organize family records, photos and memories for simplicity
Be smart and have financial plans to spend pension money
Go travel, go to Mexico, go to sun, run from the snow and cold
A constant clamor to go for vacation from friends and neighbors
Loneliness of retirement and senior years loom large

Mental and physical ailments become the daily grind
Well, going over 65 years is not that magic line or is it?
To establish priorities and clarity of purpose is the panacea
Remove past grudges and accept the world as it is
Keep your humour and daily exercise
Establish a spiritual bondage with the world and the Creator
AMEN

The crossing of magic line is made meaningful by the timely arrival of Diya Jyoti.   I believe Mehta”™s   ship has arrived with the baby”™s chuckle and smile. Many more will come to enhance their destiny. The first born, a little bundle of joy, will navigate their lives till kingdom come. Subhash, we pray for your happiness, fullness in life and a great journey from here to eternity. Enjoy your 65th.

Our lives go on without you

But nothing is the same

When someone speaks your name

Sad are the hearts

as we love and miss you

Your heart was kind and true

The special years will not return

Our memories are forever

When we were all together

We had laughter and fun together

Today we, but weep alone

Ulka, caring, loving and joyful

One who lived for happiness

One who shared happiness

You spread your happiness to us

We send our happy sentiments

Memorial to Aunt/Grandma Ruth

It is difficult for me to set to words the state of my heart.

Early way back in 1974, we met Mrs.Ruth McKerracher as members of the United Nations Association Niagara Falls Chapter. Mrs. Ruth Mckerracher has been in our lives at every step since we migrated to Canada. The year 1974 is very important to us. Apart from migrating to Canada from Kenya in that year, we learnt that we were expecting a baby. Wow, our first child was to be born within 9 months of arrival in a new country. That”™s when Mrs. Ruth McKerracher became Aunt/Grandma Ruth. She was there at all times, giving support to my wife, Jackie, and also immensely looking forward to the arrival of Nina, our daughter. She became a part of Shah family and we became part of hers.

She was there when my son, Sunir, was borne in 1979. She was always around to give support and also join in the joy and excitement for his arrival. She gave all the love and attention as a Grandma would give.

Both kids were always pampered. Aunt/Grandma Ruth became our Canadian Grandma. This gave a tremendous comfort to my mother on the other side of the world in Kenya.

Over the years she diligently sent Birthday, Easter and Christmas cards whether she was away on a tour somewhere or when we moved away from Niagara Falls. We continued to visit her and make special trips to Niagara Falls to spend time with her. Kids grew up but they always cherished visiting her whether in Niagara Falls or in Ottawa.

It is a story of cross-cultural affinity. Where we came from (our Indian background) and her world with Scottish/Canadian background and how instantaneous a bond was weaved. We took to each other like fish to water. Our love and respect for each other was rather quite quick. There was mutuality and never a thought on our minds that we are different and do not belong together She was an epitome of the Canadian Way.

Our spirit is emboldened and sparkled and we are forever enchanted by her love and affection.

Good Lord has taken her to His fold and I am convinced that her soul will be blessed forever. Aunt Ruth/Grandma, you will always remain in our heart to eternity. We cherish the time with you.

Rest in peace, Aunt/Grandma Ruth, we love you, your Shah family.

Prayer for the bliss of the departed soul -Mr. Harry Beck

 September 10, 2005

Prayer for the bliss of the departed soul – Mr. Harry Beck, dear husband of our friend Rima & loving father to his daughters (Maya &   Maria).

A loss of a loved one and especially a loving youthful husband and delightful father is always painful. A companion is lost for no reason. The sorrow is gripping and ever present. Good memories and a passage of time will help to accept the pain but difficult to ignore.

During his short journey on this earth, Harry was a very loving father and a husband. He was always there as a helping friend to many. Many will cherish his charm and soft manners.

According to Hindu and Jain philosophies, soul never dies. And the departed loved one was not just a physical body that has died but   his real self, his soul and his spirit, lives on.

I have selected the following from the writings in   Bhagavad-Gita; Lord Krishna says :

For the soul, there is neither birth nor death at any time.
He has not come into being,
does not come into being,
and will not come into being.
He is unborn, eternal, ever existing and primeval.
He is not slain when the body is slain.

As a person puts on new garments, giving up the old ones,
the soul similarly accepts new material bodies,

giving up the old and useless ones.

The soul can never be cut into pieces by any weapon,
nor burnt by fire,
nor moistened by water,
nor withered by the wind.

The individual soul is unbreakable and insoluble,
and can be neither burnt nor dried.
He is ever-lasting,
present everywhere,
unchangeable,
immovable
and eternally the same.

It is said that the soul is invisible,
inconceivable, and immutable.
Knowing this, you should not grieve for the body.

Let us pray to the God Almighty,
ӢReceive our prayers for Harry.
ӢReceive him into your everlasting heavenly world
ӢBless him with inner peace
ӢEnable him to realize our love
ӢEnable him to realize RimaӪs, his daughtersӪ (Maya & Maria), his familyӪs & friendӪs immense love & respect
ӢProvide Rima & the family the strength to weather this loss and keep their memories intact.

Amen!

Please accept our heartfelt Condolences!

Jackie & Pravin Shah family.
