General Comment: As mentioned earlier  posts, I have embarked on writing a few words on all the books that I may read in my retirement.

Since 2011, I have refrained to read serious books – on politics, spirituality, philosophy, society etc but I like to read -so I have gone reading light books to entertain me.

Both my kids have got KINDLE (electronic reading) but i have not . The younger lot like gadgets – new ones all the times but senior like me is finding that to be a bit overwhelming.

These days I am in Mystery books . I have reverted to my teenage passion.

The first book I read after the new year 2012 is Agatha Christie book – which I bought for a   dollar from the local (deep River) library, They are discarding many old books .

The book title is ” Five Little Pigs” .This is about a painter (Amyas Crate) who was murdered and his wife got charged and convicted a   murderer BUT after 16 years had passed – her   daughter (Carla) – who was in her early teens and was on thye cusp of marriage – was not comfortable that her mother was convicted as a murderer and she wanted to find the truth behind the case.   She engaged the famous & brilliant detective ” Hercule Poirot” to unravel begind the case. He set about interviewing the  old companions of the painter and then lo behold found the Carla’s mother was innocent and the  another lady (whose picture the painter was painting) killed him.

The next two books i have recently completed are Perry Mason books. The local librarian had NOT heard about thsio famous fictitious Lawyer – whose books were vary pupular when I was teenager. So I got two books using the “Inter-library” system.

All Perry Mason books are written by Erle Stanley Gardner .

This book I bought at the Deep River Library at their Book Sale   about 10 days before.   This is a book in a novel format written based on evolution of mankind. Stretching from the distant past into the remotefuture, from primordial Earth to the stars . Evolution is   soaring symphony of struggle, extinction, and survival.

It was slow read but interesting. The book travelled with me to Toronto on May11-13 where I (with Mrs) had gone   to attend an AGM for my Engineering Association . We also spent time with our son, daughter-in-law and Maya (our lovely youngest granddaughter) .

To-day I completed reading   the book titled ” Bloodletting & Miraculous Cures ” by Vincent Lam loaned to me by my daughter a few days ago.   The book is centered on medical career and   life experiences in providing   medical treatment by young doctors in Toronto .     NotE: To-day is Nina’s birthday and thus this is a nice present to her – my completing   reading of the book.

Earlier   I had completed the following Agatha Christie books (prior to completing the reading of ” Bloodletting & Miraculous Cures ” by Vincent Lam.

– The mirror CRACK’d from side to side.

– Murder with Mirror.

I have also started on the book ” Every Breath You take ” by Ann Rule – which is a true story of obsession, revenge, and murder. This is a difficult book to read – no! no! – the writing is   good and with easy flow but the human evil – a real case – is difficult on the mind and very aggrevating . Thus i have only read half the book and have diverted myself to other books as described above.

Tuesday 26 December 2012

I completed reading the book titled ” The In-between World of Vikram Lall” by M G Vasangi – our Indaim famous writer – two time Giller Prize winner. This book took me to a nostalgia tour of my past – being born and brought up in Kenya and eventually migrating to Canada.   The author currently lives in Toronto – not very far from where my son (Sunir) lives.

This is the final book for the year. Looking forward to read many more next year.

Book Reading -Miscellaneous Books Read (2009-2010) plus 2011

General Comment: As mentioned earlier on my April 19 & Sept 14 2007 posts, I have embarked on writing a few words on all the books that I may read in my retirement.

I will reread few books which I read over last few years – this to allow me to capture some good essence from the readings .

It is apparent   that I have been a bit lazy to write about books I read in 2009 and also 2010.   I will try in the post to capture as many as I can – from my failing memory.

I can assure that I have read more books during these two years than listed here .

Also, it was great period -as I helped my friend in Kenya (Kantibhai) to formulate and prepare his writing of a book ( in our vernacular language – Gujarati) on Oshwal History.

Oshwal Community  is from Saurastra (Gujarat, India) – many migrated to Kenya at the turn of the Twentieth Century – made good and then   some further migrated to UK, Canada, USA and Australia  and other countries of the world  after East Africa became independent . The Community  mainly follows the Jain religion   ( a very non-violent – “live & let live principle” type religion) – though of late different streams of Hinduism have cropped in.   The Community has also become flexible in terms of accepting inter-community and inter-racial marriages . The Community is very democratic in running its affairs in various countries and have a modern outward looking attitude .It is endowed with many selfless and committed volunteers and also philanthropists.

So that took a lot of time but also made daily living more interesting. So in 2009 and 2010,  I have read the following books  .   These books listed are  over and above those I read when I visited my son & his wife in Toronto. They have great selection of books and thus whenever we spend time there (even for a couple of days) , I manage to read a book.  1) Esther by Norah Lofts – a romance book – light reading .2) Terrace Terrors by Richard Allen – a sort of SKINHEAD series book   – light reading3) A Death for Dreamer by E.X. Giroux -a Mystery book – light reading4) Something So Right by Elizabeth August – a romance book – light reading5) Snows of Offenburg by Alox Andre – a romantic suspense (a Mystique book) – light reading6) Aloha Means Goodbye by Naomi Hintze – a Mystery book – light reading7) Twins by Roxanne Pulitzer – a novel – a steamy expose’ of decadent Palm Beach society – light reading8) The following books written by the famous author – Dean Koontz – mystery novels (suspense, scary) – light reading.           –   Dark Rivers of The Heart               –   Phantoms

          –   Tick Tock

          – Fear Nothing

9)  The Gunny Sack by M.G. Vasanji   – this is well written novel embedded in historical migration of East Indians from India to East Africa at the turn of the Twentieth Century or before that.

M.G. Vasanji is a famous Canadian ( East Indian ) author . We got this book as a gift on our 70th Birthday organised by our kids in 2010.

10) The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen T. Covey. This book i got from PEO conference on Chpater Leaders Conference  held in Toronto in 2010 .

Its a book  providing lessons in Personal Change.

11) My Country by Pierre Berton – a Canadian History book

12) The Life and Times of Nikola Tesla by Marc J. Seiffer – a True Science & Biography book

13) Rumblings of a Rolling Stone by John W. Childs- a personal story of migration – the writer (about 90 yrs old now) plays bridge with his wife – at Petawawa Lions Hall – where me & others also go to play .

14) Tales from Forozsha Baag by Rohinton Mistry . The author is originally from India but have now migrated and settled in Canada.

We got this book as a gift on our 70th Birthday organised by our kids in 2010

15) Humor – the Magic of Genie (Seven Potions for developing a sense of Humor)   by Jeanne Robertson

16) Wisdom Develops Swamadhi by Acariya Maha Boowa Nanasampanno –   A Guide to the practice of the Buddha’s Meditation methods .

14 march 2011 – completed reading (a bit of fast reading) a book on predicting prophesies titled ” The Complete Illustrated Book of Divination and Prophecy”   by Walter B. Gibson and Litzka R. Gibson. It is interesting that I found this book from a collection over the years -which I had stored away in a box in the basement, It turns out that this book was gifted to Nina -when she turned 18 years old –  by her friend Gillian. Its a fascinating book giving various methods people have used over the millenia to predict future’

12 April 2011 – I have just completed reading this book titled ” Are You getting Enlightened or Losing Your Mind” by Dennis Gersten M.D. The author is a practicing psychiatrist  .  Dr. Gersten has supplemented his medical skills with uncommon wisdom, compassion, and love. Practical and reassuring, this book tells readers how to become comfortable with disturbing or disruptive states of minds – from stress to depression, from paranormal experiences to mystical visions – and how to learn from and find meaning in them all. .

He is also a follower of the Indian Guru ” Sathya Sai Baba”.

Book Reading -Miscellaneous Books Read

General Comment:As mentioned earlier on my April 19 2007 post, I have embarked on writing a few words on all the books that I may read in my retirement. I will reread few books which I read over last few years – this to allow me to capture some good essence from the readings.

Since I read my last book -Eterana Ganesha  (see my earlier posting on April 20 ,2008), I have read the following books till now.   These books are  over and above the 3 separate Bridge (Card Game ) books I have read for  my   learning about good bridge playing.   I follow the Standard American Yellow Card system (SAYC) when playing bridge game. My partner Marcel & myself have done well both in Duplicate   & Social bridge in Deep River and Petawawa – though we need to learn much in order to achieve consistent results.   The learning continues .   The main book of reference (for learning) is : Standard Biddng with SAYC by Ned Downey and Ellen Pomer.

The books I read are listed in the order they were read.

1)   Idiots At Work by Leland Gregory.

Paperback book – some 220 pages- its the chronicles of workplace stupidity. Hilarious & a bit disconcerting as we see our and  foibles of others in life – especially at workplace.   A light book  .

2) Watchers by Dean R. Koontz

Paperback book – some 483 pages – its   a story about lab work with the creation of two separate genetically altered life forms – who escaped the highly secret Lab – and the chase begins . One is a magnificent dog of immense   intelligence and the other was a hybrid monster of a violent nature. A gripping story of chase and devastation in the path and ultimate victory of the good side – i.e the dog lives  free with his  master.

3) The Only Road to North by Erik Mirandette

Paperback book – some 298 pages. This is a religious book (a sort of spiritual discovery by a young man, Erik). Erik was doing a humanitarian job in Morocco – was out on quest to live the life that he felt he was created to live. This led him to an unforgettable  travel a cross Africa   with his younger brother and two friends on Road Bikes (motor   cycles) . They travelled 9000 miles in the bikes starting in South Afric and ending in Egypt.

However, after that successful trip across Africa, a terrorist’s bomb ripped Erik’s world and faith apart. He lost his brother   from this bomb..     An autobiographical &  gripping story –   a good read to know that all that we plan can go awry with unknown higher plans which can supersede our plans.

4) The Indian Fan by Victoria Holt.

Paperback book – some 448 pages.

This is the story about Britain and class living in Britain in   Queen Victoria time with colonial living in India .It does give some colouful description of life in  India at the time along with life in England. A very interesting reading – I read the book in a couple of daus as it was difficult to put it down

5) Dreams of Glory by Thomas Fleming.

A paperback book – some 491 pages.   This book is set in 1780 when America was fighting war with England – Americans led by George Washington   – a gripping story – of life in America at that time   with Blacks also playing their part in the war with England.

6) The   Spring of Tiger by Victoria Holt

A paperback book – some 371 pages.   This is set in England and Shree Lanka during the 8th Century . It revolves around the pearls -the Ashington Pearls (which were given to an ancestral Ashington  by a Ceylonese  King for saving his son by the Ashington)  have been with family for generations . There is a description of tea plantations and  such development in Shree Lanka.   A good book for light reading.

7) Economics of Lord Mahavira by Acharya Mahaprajna

Note: Lord Mahavira is the 24th (last) Tirthankar of Jains.   He propagated the non-violence way of life and consideration for others – with detachment to material things (as opposed to  aggrandisement of wealth).

A paperback book – some 174 pages-   a     very serious book – on morality of commerce and economy .

According to Mahavira , th eprudent principle guiding the limits to consumption is this: any article of use, which does not impinge  on physical, mental and emotional health, should be acceptable.

Book Reading – Eternal Ganesha

General Comment:As mentioned earlier on my April 19 2007 post, I have embarked on writing a few words on all the books that I may read in my retirement. I will reread few books which I read over last few years – this to allow me to capture some good essence from the readings.

The recent book I have completed reading is a book titled “Eternal Ganesha” by Gita Mehta. This book, we purchased from the bookstore at the Royal Ontario Museum (Toronto) when we visited the place on Friday April 11.

This is a large hard cover book with very many different pictorial images of Lord Ganesha. However, the book is short with 128 pages. The narrative and description by the author is really very thought provoking.

In India, the idols and images of Lord Ganesha (one of the Hindu Gods) are everywhere . Lord Ganesha is elephant-headed and has a bit larger pot-bellied body of   a man.

Lord Ganesha is perhaps the most popular god in the Hindu pantheon, the elephant-headed Ganesha is known by many names.

Ganesha represents hope, optimism and goodwill and is Lord of Success.

Thus He is invoked first when Hindus venture on any substantive activity.

It is good book for reflection of human endeavours and need for some  higher cosmic support  . Lord Ganesha fulfills the need and hope for success.

In Eternal Ganesha, the author, Gita Mehta, provides chapters for each of Ganesha’s characteristics.

The book is presented in such a way that it is a good coffee table book and would definitely generate intense and spiritual conversation.
