POEM – Canada Day -2012

O! Canada – 2021

The Turmoil

On the eve of celebrating Canada Day (01 July 2021)  – we need  to sit back and reflect as to the nature of events that we have experienced in our fair Canada  during the past year.

I have written a
POEM – which expresses my/our emotions  and admiration  for  Canada – for being caring and compassionate country that we are proud of.

Our Country is in turmoil this  year

For the indigenous communities

first the discovery of the remains of 215 children at the former residential school site in Kamloops, B.C

it sets off a wave of mourning and pledges from government to do better at the work of reconciliation.

All political parties talk about it

For Muslim Community

Then the  running down of  a London family with a pickup truck, killing four and severely injuring a nine-year-old boy -a  ” heinous ” crime.

it sets off a wave of mourning and just disgust at this kind of hate crime .

Talks and marches are organised in many cities to  mourn and express grief for such callous act

All political parties talk about it

For Black  Community

Black Lives Matter (BLM) – this movement took a strong resounding following in Canada – though  originating in US

Now we see Black experts in all fields  on TV interviews

All commercials are with black actors – all of  a sudden so many actors discovered

We see blacks have same aspirations , family love life and talents as others .

For all of us  – Covid-19

Hundreds of thousands have died  of the Covid-19 virus -all over the world

Farewell to dying is becoming difficult

Vaccinations have started in earnest though  masks and social distancing is still maintained

O!  Canada

We are astounded

as to what trauma our country is going through

While seek peace and tranquility

O!  Canada

We are flabbergasted

with a discovery of the remains of 215 children of our indigenous community

And at the former residential school site in Kamloops, B.C

O!  Canada

We are shocked to the bone

witnessing the  running down of  a London Muslim family with a pickup truck

killing four and severely injuring a nine-year-old boy

What  an ” heinous ” crime.

O!  Canada

We are shaken and vilified

Our historical racial injustices to Blacks and other minorities

Black Lives Matter (BLM) – this movement with resounding following in Canada

though  originating in US

O!  Canada

We are stunned at the spread of  Covid-19 virus

Hundreds of thousands have died  of the Covid-19 virus

all over the world

Farewell to dying is becoming difficult

O!  Canada

We are proud of our country

Society is working hard to correct the historical injustices to our indigenous community

the outpouring of sympathy and support to bereaved Muslin community was astounding

Now we see Black experts in all fields  on TV interviews and commercials

O!  Canada

We are proud of your humanity

Now we see Black experts in all fields  on TV interviews

Most commercials are with black actors – all of  a sudden so many actors discovered

We see blacks have same aspirations , family love life and talents as others

O ! Canada

We admire your care and sharing

Vaccinations have started in earnest

Though masks and social distancing is still maintained

Industry and businesses are opening

Government financial support is maintained

O! Canada

We celebrate Canada day

With enthusiasm, pride and joy

We stand on guard for thee

Wanting to ‘hide under the bed”

I just discovered the following article I wrote dated 22 February 2009 – a time when economic situation had gone bad.

I am not sure that the article was sent to the local newspaper (North Renfrew Times) for publication. It may have been.

The article- I find it appropriate for the present time -December 2020 – when we all are suffering from the coronavirus pandemic and economic disaster from lockdowns.

                                                                                                   22 February 2009

Wanting to ‘hide under the bed”

These days, when waking up in the morning, do you feel like wanting to “hide under the bed”.

The current news is all very frightening.  Doom and gloom seem to have dominated the news lately.  Economy is in downturn. Recession is being talked about and loss of jobs in Ontario and all over the world is becoming a reality. The terrorism continues to trumpet its ugly side and one has to watch where to go or what to do.

People are getting stressed out even when they themselves personally may not be affected. However, many of us have witnessed the erosion of our savings due to steep drop in stock market.  And there is no end in sight.

For most of us who are retired from job market, our hard earned money saved for future dignified retirement is vanishing and giving us a nightmare. For those who are young and working hard to raise a family, the news about downturn in economy is unnerving and does not allow proper planning for future.

These days we find ourselves wanting to “hide under the bed”. This mental desire is felt not because we (ourselves) did anything wrong, shameful or stupid but the decay in external environment is real. Many of those financial wizards (including institutions) have proven to be just that –“Wizards” – a sudden disappearing of trillions of dollars. Who can we trust? The future generation is being burdened with heavy debt.

However, we need to keep our cool. “Hiding under the bed” will not work for long, as the world has to be confronted and won with all our genius, hard work, tenacity and faith in ourselves.

Our family and friends are a source of great support and provide the everlasting strength for survival in the current economic downturn.

Faith in ourselves, our family and friends needs to be coupled with faith in humanity and also in divinity. This will help us thru the difficult time.

Diwali 2020 (Saturday 14 November )

I wrote this article for circulation amongst my colleagues , friends and family members – to celebrate a “mute” Diwali – to safeguard overselves from the coronavirus.

I will also send the article to North Renfrew Times ( a local newspaper) for publication . They sometimes do not publish – for whatever reasons.

                                                                                                                               7  November 2020

Diwali  2020  (Saturday  14 November )

It  is  the  time  when  we  celebrate  Diwali  – a triumph  of  good  over  evil .

This is  an East Indian tradition  – celebrated all over the world.

————-

Yes,  , we  have  still the coronavirus  pandemic to suffer  .

Note:  This  pandemic  sprang  from China  since  February of this  year

Yes,   we  have still the Chinese  army encroaching on the Indian territory on the  Himalayas

Note:  In  June  of this  year   a  deadly brawl killed  unarmed 20 Indian border troops

Yes,   we still have  our two  Canadians  in the custody of the Chinese.

Note:   Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor detainedsince December, 2018.

Yes,  the free world  has seen the most  divisive election  in USA

Note:  Though  the  latest   news  give  Joe Biden an edge to become the USA  President  but  it is still not over .

————

Veterans  Day

It  is  time also to celebrate  the  Veterans Day  in the coming week   (Wednesday –  11 November ) .

These veterans and their colleagues  sacrificed  their life and limb for the  freedom of our country  during many wars – even in our lives ,  Lest we forget .

Our many thanks and gratitude  for their  sacrifice  that  we  enjoy  this  freedom.

It should be noted  that if the  next world war  to ever  happen  –  there would be no more Veterans Day to celebrate  – as  most of could  be vaporized  including  the front line defenders.    What a  horrible scenario.

————-

I   digressed   because  this year  the zeal  for  celebrating   Diwali  is somewhat  subdued  – specially when we  need to  keep  safe from the coronavirus and maintain social distances and cover our  face  with a mask.    It is  a hilarious scene and  of course it is a serious matter and  we  all should  care for our  family,  neighbours  and  the community  while  taking care  of ourselves.

Diwali is a time for rejoicing and renewal  as we celebrate the triumph of good over evil and light over darkness.    Diwali  is  an auspicious  festival  celebrated  by  the East Indians  all  over  the world  with great enthusiasm and excitement.

Diwali  is  also  popularly known as  ” the  Festival  of  Light ” .

When we celebrate Diwali in Canada, it symbolises the genuine Indian Culture and it is also a symbol for  ” Unity In Diversity ” in action when all peoples join hands to celebrate the victory of Good over the Evil.

In Canada,  the  celebration of Diwali provides us (those from the Indian Sub-Continent) an opportunity to showcase,  to the society-at-large,  our common Indian Culture and our values of tolerance and respect for all.

Diwali Festival is getting recognised by various national political and social leaderships in many Western countries including Canada  – which helps to generate understanding and friendship between various communities.

——————-

Notwithstanding   many   challenges  currently   amongst  us  –  we  need to   believe and recognize   that    ultimately   ”  good  will  triumph over  evil  “‘

This  year  we celebrate  Diwali  between   our  close  family  and maintaining  precautionary  measures   to  avoid  any transmission of coronavirus.   Yes, no gathering and parties.

My wife Jackie and  I would like to wish  you all a Happy Diwali &  a  very successful  New Year.

Father’s Day – 2006

I had written this article in 2006 – with so much interesting data in it . I had sent it to North Renfrew Times for publication . Here it is for posterity.

                                                                                                                                       2006 June 17

Father’s  Day

This  year  the Father’s Day for me is an extraordinary  reminder of  the joy  of being a father  especially when I am  at the cusp of retirement at a robust age of  67  ( working since 1962 in my chosen profession ,  without  much  of a  break.

Every year since my daughter was born and after four  (4) years  the arrival of my son , I have received priceless recognition as  a father (hugs, kisses  and that contented gleam in their eyes ), which made living always meaningful  and yes, affordable,

Apart from receiving a Special Illustrated Edition book ( Angels and Demons ) by Dan Brown as a Father’s  Day gift this year, I am tickled to recognize  a couple of intangible gifts  from the kids , which imparts deep satisfaction and innate happiness.

This year my daughter and son-in-law are moving to this area  from Toronto. They decided  on the move when my wife and I were travelling in India during February. Their move to this area is a transformation from the city lifestyle to countryside environment  but also intrinsically signals care for our (parent’s) comfort and needs .

In ny book , this is star-spangled  move as they come closer to us and thus results in us (seniors) not having to make a move to Toronto .  Our move to Toronto  would have been a very expensive one and also uprooting from many years  of imbibed Deep River flavour (and lifestyle) would have been traumatic.

My son completed his Masters degree from University of Toronto this year. We attended  his Graduation investiture  past week , which filled our heart with pride and immense joy. He also moved from a single room shared residence  to a comfortable  two-bedroom apartment .  He is moving on in his life , which is reassuring to us.

AS  a father, one wants to see one’s offspring progress well in life and take their place in society as useful and productive members . This year ,I see positive  changes in my kids’ lives .  This is the best gift  any father can have.

If my father had been alive he would be very proud . His life was an example of  hard work . taking any challenge that comes  his way, helping others at all times , trust all, of compassion but more so to be reliable .  One needs  to persevere in attaining goals and slog on even when success is elusive .  He was always caring and support us in our legitimate needs and wants .

I am relating the above feelings , which I am sure ,  many in our community would similarly have experienced  with their kids . Happy Father’s Day to all.

That week is coming ! ” Virtual ” Canada Day ! Salute !

The following article (my write-up) has been forwarded to North Renfrew Times (on 16 June 2020) for publication in their next issue.

                                                                                                                                                16 June 2020

That week is coming ! ”  Virtual ” Canada Day !   Salute !

It is that time when  the whole world is going nuts over racism . There are protests galore all over the world – mostly the democratic  world .   How can  a police constable – who is a custodian of law can be so cruel when he confronts  a colored person?

Here in Canada , yes there is systemic racism – that has been agreed by   many of our distinguished political and business  leaders .  Yes , many times we wonder  what is happening and by and large we are proud to be Canadian.  A  welcoming country which is a beacon for  warmth and care.

None  of  us  want to be excluded !

I  am  not  white-  so  what ?   I am  openly  proud to be  part of the Canadian  milieu  and I sing praises for my Canada since many years – with joy  and pride.

Many of you have given me encouragement over  the years for my community work as well as  my writings  and Canada Poems .  You did not look at my ethnicity, my height,  my weight  or  my  handicap . You did not care who  I  pray  to  nor  about my hair.

Yes, you do care that I remain humble ,  compassionate and caring like all  Canadians  should be.  We want our police forces, our justice system and our citizens to show genuine  compassion and caring.

Our Canada  a  healing  balm for the world  and a shining beacon  for caring for each and every citizen.   We need you.     O! Canada.

We  celebrate  Canada Day 2020  Day on Wednesday  01 July  with  loyalty and care  in  our heart and with pride and joy.

Enjoy  your celebratory barbeque and  ” virtual ” social hugs and cheers.

We’re all in this together – Help

The following write-up for publication in the ” Letter to Editor ” section of North Renfrew Times – which was published the Wednesday 3 June Edition under the title of — We’re all in this together.

The letter is given below.

                                                                                                                        31 May 2020

Help !

Hi , I need your help.

I am sure you also need my help.

Oh ! hell, we all need help from each other .

For the Covid-19 pandemic , the authorities are relaxing the lockdown and allowing  the opening of stores and offices  though  carefully and slowly.

It has become our individual responsibility to remain safe and also to safeguard public when we are out shopping or gone out walking .

When going to stores such as Valumart or Giant Tiger or Canadian Tire or any other store in our area – it is important  to keep distance from other shoppers  and wear a mask (or a face shield) , if need be.  Follow store safety measures ,  respect other shoppers  and  please do not rush to pick items past a customer already present at  the aisle.

Coronavirus  or COVID-19  doesn’t care about you or me or about  our gender or age or race or  nationality or height or weight.

It is  everyone’s responsibility to take necessary actions in order to limit its spread.

We do not want ourselves  or our loved ones to get infected .  Who would want to be hooked up to a ventilator or respirator ?

Protect Yourself and Others From Coronavirus.

By  helping each other to  keep safe – together, we’ll get through this.

regards

A jingle from my heart – What Now?

As when we are approaching our 53rd Wedding Anniversary – I have written a sort of ” a jingle in the heart ” .
I circulated that to many of my contacts on social media and also by e-mails

At least – it takes away from daily grind of listening/reading about terrible news from Covid-19 pandemic.

Also  I hope that it diverts us from  the  monotony of being in isolation . .

What Now? – a jingle in the heart.          –      see below;

                                                                                                                       27 May 2020

What  Now ?

It’s  our  53rd Anniversary

Our wedding  on that day of 27 May 1967

Long  Long ago – in a far away land

Memory etched on our soul and mind

How time flies ?

What Now ?

We sit in isolation

Believing  all safe and sound

Sound of grandchildren jingles on the phone

Cheering and making us jubilant

Life is a continuation of ourselves

What Now ?

Waiting  for new  twists and turns

Then  we were P.J.  &  J.K .

After we were Mr. & Mrs. Shah

Now  we are Pravin & Jackie

Identity changing all the time

What  Now ?

I may need to figure it out

Together the journey  continues

Life Story full  of memories
