Family Christmas Celebration -2019

I penned the following article on Christmas celebration and have sent it to our local newspaper (North Renfrew Times) for publication – on 12 December 2019 . They may or may not publish. It is their xprerogative . However, as per every year , I will circulate and send by e-mail the article to my family members, friends , colleagues , contacts and social groups I am associated with.

Family Christmas Celebration

Come November, cold season starts and mood changes for Christmas holidays.

One by one houses get lit by outside lights and strings of lights add festive mood to the populace. There is magic in the air.

At night the whole street becomes heavenly – sometimes with snow on the ground.

The Christmas holidays are secularized with decorated Christmas tree, artful display of lights and Santa Clause doing his Ho! Ho! Ho! Even those of us who are not Christians by faith are also celebrating Christmas with gusto. Christmas is celebrated around the world in many countries with or without large Christian population.

Kids are looking forward to have Santa Clause bring gifts for them and their friends – there would be laughter with caring and sharing. One need not be a Christian in partaking in the festivities. There is the underlying message of love, sacrifice and being compassionate for all when we celebrate the birth of Lord Jesus. These values are the foundation of caring and sharing society for peaceful and progressive existence.

For us, the family start xpreparing for visits and family get together. My son’s family phoned from Toronto early in November that they will be coming over to Deep River during Christmas. This is our family holiday tradition since many years. My daughter& family are nearby – thus we have a very nice get together. All grandchildren – 3 from Toronto and 2 nearby – have wonderful time. They are so loving and playful with each other – making grandparents very ecstatic.

The children love to see each other and spend the day playing games and sharing their new gifts and toys that Santa Claus brought for each of them.

We feel fortunate to have our family together during Christmas holidays.
Every year, we are fortunate to attend a Christmas Party at Ken and Leela Philipose”™home here in Deep River. This has become a cherished annual family holiday tradition within the local East Indian Community. Ken & Leela have been hosting this celebration of Christmas since long – since many years as I remember – more or less from the year we settled in Deep River in 1986.

Their Christmas Party is open to people of all faiths. The guests attend with gusto and excitement and join the hosts in carol singing, enjoying snacks and drinks and warmth of each other”™s company. There is much laughter and merriment during the Party.

I understand that both Ken and Leela are Saint Thomas Christians, also called Syrian Christians of India, who trace their origins to the evangelistic activity of Thomas the Apostle in the 1st century. According to history, Saint Thomas, one of the disciples of Christ, came the South Indian Kerala coast in in the 1st century. Kerala is known for their paddy fields, coconut trees, rivers, backwaters and houseboats. People of Kerala have a literacy rate, the highest in India.

As Deep Riverites for many years both Ken and Leela are socially active and have philanthropic hearts. Recently they contributed a large sum ($19,000.00) to our Hospital Foundation towards capital equipment purchase.

The main focus of Christmas celebration is the birth of Lord Jesus or Christ. We know that historically Jesus existed and the baby was born to change the world. The basic teaching of Christ is to love your Lord, your God with all thy strength, love your neighbor as thyself and be a peacemaker and pray for your enemies. He also teaches, what you do for the poorest of the poor, you have done for me.
I am not a Christian by faith and I do worship the Almighty under Hindu tradition – which encourages all to be a spiritual person and believe in a higher power. I pray that Christmas 2019 is observed by us keeping in mind the sacrifice and the most illuminating message of Hope that Lord Jesus has brought to the human kind. This will keep us from despair and encourage us for helping actions.

Let yearly Christmas celebration become a pointer to peace and a reminder that there is more to life than fights and arrogation of power and wealth. When we meet our family and friends (during Christmas holidays) let us seek forgiveness for any misdeeds done to them by us and forgive them for any perceived or real misdeeds done by them to us. This will be a gift par excellence!

Pass it on and see the magic!

My wife Jackie and I wish you all a very uplifting Christmas and a Happy New Year. Happy Holidays to all.

Miracles of Christmas ( celebrating Christmas 2018 )

This article   was written to celebrate Christmas 2018. It has been circulated widely ( by e-mail) to many of friends and colleagues . Also it has been sent to local newspaper (North Renfrew Times) for publication.

Miracles of Christmas   ( celebrating Christmas 2018 )

With   winter setting in and snow in our backyard it seems that the Christmas is around the corner . With all the Christmas movies on Television, lights and decorations around the town , we are   looking forward to welcome the Santa Clause and enjoy the warmth of his jingle, laughter and joy.

Christmas is coming, with all its frippery and solemnity, its tinsel and hymns.   Our heart is in rhythm with the environment with warmth for our neighbors, colleagues , family and friends.

Christmas bestows magical touch   to our hearts. The celebration of Christmas has gone   global. It has jumped the Christian boundary and have penetrated in all cultures and societies the world over.   The image of Santa Clause delivering   gifts of toys to the kids around the world has mesmerized all.

We all enjoy the festivities and celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ on this earth.   He was a   personification of divine attributes that lie underlain in a human soul. This coming of Jesus was heralded and anointed by the three wise men from the East . The history of his struggles and ultimate crucifixion is well known and recited many times by his followers and others.

Lord Jesus’ message of   Love Thy Neighbors , Turn your other cheek,   Be warm and compassionate to all, Forgive   yourself and also your enemies   are time-tested messages which , if followed genuinely, can bring all nearer to Godly experience.

Christmas   brings out stories of   miracles experienced in daily lives of faithful . Miracles happen when true and genuine faith is observed   and then trusting Lord to do the helping as and where required.

One can read   “on line ” stories of miracles at Christmas time   –   which are told and described with care and true belief.  Reader’s Digest published in December 2017 issue   some   of these true stories about Christmas miracles from readers   that little details can turn an ordinary Christmas into a cherished   memory.

LINK: https://www.rd.com/true-stories/inspiring/christmas-miracles-true-stories/

I am sure that many of us have   personal story of miracles in our lives and most miracles happen around auspicious time like Christmas.

Remembering the miracles of Christmas is a great way to retain a sense of childlike wonder as we seek to keep the Lord at the center of it all.

On a larger world view   – we see miracles all around us. To my mind, the change of seasons, rising of the sun and moon,   gardens and living creatures all around us   under different conditions/circumstances is a   portrayal of miracles .

If we open our eyes , we can see miracles  affecting our community here in Deep River every day   –   a well run small town with excellent water supply, road systems, garbage collection , Police and Emergency Services etc. These  are well   organized and maintained. We have a fine   hospital, and many recreational activities . The most miraculous happening is excellent volunteering   by town’s citizens for myriad and varied activities.

I am always in wonderment when   I see dedication, commitment, education and training of many coaches of various activities in the Town  – who spend their time with smile to teach, coach and pass on their knowledge to our young and upcoming generation. Long days and week-ends are accepted with care and dedication.

These coaches/teachers are an embodiment of miracles especially when I see such joy and smile on our grandkids’   faces. Day in and day out.

In a broader sense , I have also noted an interesting miracle (sort of) at our Deep River Bridge Club.   Since I started playing in 2007, I have seen transformation in partnerships. There are now many couples who play as partners – a symbol of   love and respect. Of course , friendships are also   developed but when one sees a couple playing together as partners with cool and calmness – it is definitely bordering on a miracle.

The heart is thrilled and joyous that on the eve of 2018 Christmas, we have   some positive news items . The ” ground breaking ” ceremony   was held recently for a New Apartment Development right in the center of the Deep River town.   It seems contract agreement has been tentatively reached between the employer and professional employees at the Chalk River Laboratories. These news items infuse stability in our lives .     Christmas miracles !!

My wife (Jackie Shah) and I wish you all a life full of happy miracles.

Merry Christmas to you and your family . We also wish you all a very Happy Holiday and a successful New Year.

Christmas 2017 – Christ’s message

On the eve of Christmas coming and with the background of attacks on innocent people all over the world –   I   thought about what an individual can learn   from the ocassion which can strengthen the message of peace.       So after some thinking and studying the subject – I came with the following article (write-up) .

I usually send my articles to local newspaper (North Renfrew Times – NRT ) – for publication.   I have sent   the current article to NRT . However for Christmas articles they wait till last week of December to publish.

In the meantime , I do circulate the articles to my friends or colleagues or bridge partners.

Article:

Christmas   2017 – Christ’s message.

This year the birth of Lord Jesus will be celebrated   as   usual with joy and gusto by the faithful. Christmas parties and festivities will be cheerful and spreading joy all around.

This is the holiday when not only the faithful but also those who belong to other beliefs also join in the festivities due to the Santa Clause phenomenon which is included along with the celebration of the birth of Lord Jesus.   The old “cult” of Santa Claus incorporates many traditions: Christian as well as Pagan

Santa brings everyone together! No matter whether one is a Christian or not.   Kids (of all nationalities) all over the world know who Santa is… And although he may be a little commercial, who can help, but love the jolly old elf?     Toys and gifts become the centerpiece in the festivities.

It’s the idea of giving that reminds us: we are all on this planet together, for the long run.

There are some 2 billion Christians on this planet who believe in the birth of the Son of God . So what message one gets from this occurrence. Why the Son of God is to be born and then persecuted and finally to be nailed on the cross.   Why and what for ?   The faithful may say that He came to remove/wash our sins. The only way is through Jesus. Jesus came so He could die on the cross for ALL of our sins.

Not being of Christian faith myself , I believe there is a deeper message from this occurrence.   Here is the Son of God   born to a virgin mother, had to be a refugee , then persecuted (and do not forget the betrayal by a close confidante ),   finally believed to come alive and walk away from His grave. He is risen. This phenomena of resurrection is the most astounding one.

The conception of Jesus was miraculous. Son of God comes on this earth as a human being. That tells that  human beings are a special species and are important in the scheme of things. So it is critical that we human beings learn to look after each other rather than stockpiling weapons of mass destruction or go berserk and start bombing or shooting the neighbours. We have the obligation to nurture and look after other species like animals, flora and fauna. We need to respect people of all   races, color or nationalities without prejudice. Only then God will be joyful.

Jesus’s  life illustrates to us the greatest weapon in our hands for happiness and that is to be compassionate and forgiving . Even when he was on the cross – tortured and nailed – He asks ” Father, forgive them, for they don’t know what they are doing.”

Jesus’s  life also teaches us to be courageous and not run away like cowards against evil and malicious actions by others but stand up against any injustices   with calm and composed attitude believing in our convictions and prepared for sacrificing our comforts and life, if need be.   Human dignity and rights are paramount and shall be equal for everyone.  Jesus on the cross is a very visible symbol of ” sacrifice ” for a cause.

We know that the Son of God had to be protected from King Harod’s machinations for wanting to kill the new born   and thus the family (Joseph & Mary along with the baby) took refuge in Egypt for two years . The refugees that we welcome these days are not different than what was happening in the old world and who knows amongst the modern refugees one of them may be a messenger for good.   However so far we have not had signs from any heavenly angels or from any wise men. Then Jesus teaches us the value of   ” patience ” and belief in workings of the Almighty.

Jesus teaches us to “turn the other cheek ” and not be violent under any circumstances – any violence or revengeful nature only bring devastation to all and sundry including those who perpetrate violence. This is the quality of divinity – message of God Almighty .  Even when he was betrayed by Judas (Judas was one of the 12 disciples closest to Jesus), Jesus became sad but did not get angry at him but forgave him for his deeds.

Jesus’s resurrection is very ennobling and shows us not to despair for any failure or loss as these failures/losses would be redeemed in one form or another in its own time – if you have conviction and faith.

Christmas is without a doubt my favorite time of the year. It’s the most wonderful time of the year. The family gets together from near and far. All grandchildren go helter-skelter having fun , playing with each other and bringing sound of joy in the household. The exchange of gifts and opening these bring so much excitement and laughter while the nature is showering snowflakes outdoors . One can almost hear the jingle bells in the ears. The Santa parade is a fixture for all to go and enjoy the bond with our neighbors .

Let us remember that the Christmas – celebration of the birth of Lord Jesus – enhances our empathetic attitude, encourage us to share our bounty and for us to remain connected and caring for the world around without any biases and prejudices.

The profound message of Christmas should not be forgotten amidst all the festivities and Santa Clause parade, Christmas Tree decorations, multiple gifts and feasts.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to you all from me and my family.

Christmas 2016

I wrote the following article on Sunday 20 November 2016   – titled ” Christmas 2016 – and have sent it to North Renfew Times , Deep River on Monday evening ( by   e-mail) for publication .   It mat take some time before they may publish it.

I write an article at Christmas time since many years and these get published in the local newspaper.   Many people like my writing.

Christmas   2016

Merry Christmas !

Merry Christmas !

Merry Christmas !

This auspicious chanting is in the air . Christmas is just  round the corner.   Houses are getting decorated   with sparkling   lights . Many groups are preparing for singing Christmas choral songs   and many are already   scouring shops for gifts/presents   for their loved ones   . There is an atmosphere of happiness and society is getting cheerful as Christmas holidays are getting nearer.

It is a joyous occasion as the world is getting ready to celebrate the birth of Lord Jesus Christ. Why is it so   joyous?   It is a Christian occasion but this birth is celebrated by all – no matter what faith one follows.

It has to do with the personality – the son of God   who is born to bring God’s   message of   love and peace   – with smile and   then sacrifice Himself at the Roman Cross  without any hint of revenge or   violence on His part.

He said –   “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”

His message of   Love Thy Neighbors , Turn your other cheek,  Be warm and compassionate to all, Forgive   yourself and also your enemies   are time- tested messages which , if followed genuinely, can bring all nearer to Godly experience.

In this season of heavenly joy , we need to understand the political changes that many of our Western societies are going through .   There is racial strife   bubbling within these   societies .   It seems that populism and demagoguery are on the march and liberalism is in retreat.

We are lucky in Canada that our country has kept up the values of tolerance and compassion . These are the values that   Lord Jesus stood for and died for on the Roman Cross.   We all know that the politics of identity is very much in conflict with tolerance and inclusiveness.

Lest we forget the lessons of the 2nd World War – the mass genocide of Jews , millions killed and use of nuclear weapons – all because of false pride in one’s culture and religion   and ignoring others as lesser human beings . If majority remain silent  and   If people will not speak up for other people’s rights, there will come a day when their own rights will be trampled on mercilessly .

Quote:

In Germany they first came for the Communists, and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Communist. Then they came for the Jews, and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Jew. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a trade unionist. Then they came for the Catholics, and I didn’t speak up because I was a protestant. Then they came for me, and by that time there was nobody left to speak up. – Reverend Martin Niemoller, Germany, 1930’s

Teachings of Lord Jesus reminds everyone to speak up against injustices against all. There would be   price to pay and at times utmost sacrifice may be necessary .   The true believers  would   lean on the spirit for Guidance in these areas.

The world  is at a   cross-road , multiple centers of powers are coming up and this creates intense competition for influence and hegemony.   Further the world is inhabited by people with different faiths which are at times at loggerheads . Unfortunately , this is keeping the world at heightened intolerance   and pain.

This Christmas we need to make effort to keep  our minds open  and   reiterate our faith in humanity and understanding of the Creator God’s   many facets of creation – of flora and fauna , animal kingdom and most important many strands of human community. We cannot despair of various conflicts in the world but work to diffuse such conflicts so our   world remain peaceful and progress for the good of all our grandchildren – no matter of what colour or faith or where they are living.

Any form of prejudice will   negate the teachings of Lord Jesus .

The time rolls on and we are here once more to celebrate the Christmas holidays .

Santa Claus is coming to town .  Let us make the Santa Claus Parade livelier and bigger than ever this year.

Some people are a bit annoyed that the holidays have lost its adjective ” Christmas” and have taken a new   adjective ” Seasonal “.   This is to accommodate many Canadians who are atheists , agnostics, non-Christians amongst us.  Personally, I would prefer it be called what it really is – it is a ” Christmas Holidays ” .

We all enjoy the festivities and to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ on this earth.   He was a   personification of divine attributes that lie within a human soul.

So let us all wish each other :   Merry Christmas !

Has he started walking or just standing up?

Bapuji

His mom’s return response (sent from her iphone) of the same date — see below:

” He pulls up on everything and loves to stand up (while holding on). He walks holding on to our fingers and has taken a few steps on his own, but isn’t really walking independently. He is getting very fast at crawling on his hands and knees though 🙂 “

Saturday 7 February 2015

This day nana/nani went (for short time ) to the Mt. Martin Hill Ski Club grounds – to watch the kids taking their ski lessons. It was great to get out of the house and watch the young ones enjoying and learning the skills for downhill skiing .   They do ski well since some time but now the time has come for some intricate skills to learn -which will be useful later when they grow up to be teenagers and then grown-ups.

After skiing lessons and skiing thereafter – the kids (with parents)   came over to nana/nani home for dinner and sleepover.   Their parents did not partake in the dinner as they were going to Petawawa for a party   .   The kids had a great quality time with the grandparents and then went to bed .
Their parent were also sleeping over in Deep River (nana/nani home)   – as all were going on Sunday to Petawawa for sking competition (for kids) .
The parents returned from their party around mid-night.
So after breakfast on Sunday – all got ready and went over to Petawawa for ski competition at Petawawa Hill.
This is what Nina (kids’ mom – our daughter) posted on her Facebook at about 3.35 p.m. ( on Sunday 8 February 2015) :-
Cold and Windy day at the hill in Petawawa but Sitara’s team placed 1st and Sachin’s team placed 2nd!
Congratulations kids!
Thursday 12 February 2015
Wow !   Creative juices flowed – Maya came up with a story to tell and she took initiative and dictated that story to her mom for having it written down.   Bravo ! Maya.
Her mom then took initiative and then distributed that story to family members – by an e-mail attachement.
Her e-mail ( titled Maya’s first story ) dated 12 February stated the below:
”   Maya dictated a story to me this morning. I think the themes of swimming and eating are inspired by Cuba!   “Maya’s (   dictated ) story – February 12, 2015 ( age 3.5)
The story went as below:
Once upon a time , ocean called .
Someone called for help.
And he wanted food.
He rang his bell.
Then they swim in the ocean
after they are done eating.
They went a little deeper.
Then they went home to eat
dinner and go to bed.
Then it was a new day.
Saturday 14 February 2015
This day both Sitara and Sachin were to come to nana/nani home (with their parents ) for a Valentine Dinner but unfortunately that did not happen – as   Sachin kind of ” threw up ‘- at the skating ( at the arena in Deep River)   and thus the Valentine dinner was   ” sort off ” postponed /cancelled at that time.
On that day, both Maya and Kieran spent Valentine time with their maternal grandparents in Toronto   (with a sleepover) – when their parents can celebrate the   ” Day ”   by themselves .
Maya talked on phone to her Ba/Bapuji   and wished them Happy Valentine   – prior to her and Kieran going over to their   grandparents   – driven there by their parents.
However on Sunday 15 February 2015   – Kids (Sitara and Sachin) came   over with their parents (after free swimming at the Mackenze Community pool , Deep River – as part of the Deep River Winter Frolic weekend) and had great time celebarting Valentine and playing with both nana and nani.
Even though Sitara is   ~7 and half   and Sachin is ~ 5 and a half   – they like nana to pretend being   a ” bad wolf ”   and them building and hiding in the “house they built ”   –   by throwing a   “heavy blanket” over the crib ( which is still left over in Sachin’s room at nana/nani home – he no longer sleeps in the crib but sleeps on the bed – whenever the kids come over for a sleep over at nan/nani home) . The blanket covers the the crib at the top and one the sides . This is now a safe house for the kids – against the ” bad wolf ” . The ” bad wolf ” hollers, huffs and puffs but the cannot demolish the   pretend ” house” and kids are safe. Aftet a while all played hide and seek ( their nani joining in) .Meanwhile their parents had a quite time in the living room.
So a great Valentine Day was celebrated afterall   – a day after but the spirit was there.
The kids got Valentine gifts – Sitara – a big balloon ( with Frozen theme ” and Sachin got a balloon with a Thomas (train) theme – along with some stickers and smartie boxes.
Earlier   Ba/Bapuji had sent (Mail Delivery) in a large envelope – Valentine Gifts to Maya and Kieran – which they had promptly received ( just a few days after their return from Cuba – vacation time in a beach) .   Maya was exhilerated for recieving the gift parcel and Kieran was   found holding and chewing the small greeting envelop addressed to him . Her parents phoned in the ‘happiness” and Maya had   a long   “kiddie”   conversation with her Ba .
Unfortunately at that time her Bapuji had dozed off on the lazy-boy sofa in the Recreation Room   – watching TV.
The ‘Gift Envelope ‘   was received by Maya (and her parents) on   Wednesday 11 February 2015 and this was communicated to Deep River same day , As stated above,   Bapuji missed the excitement over the telephone   and thus he sent the following e-mail to Maya’s parents on that day.
Hi

I am glad that Maya/Kieran recieved their “Mail Delivery” on time .

Her Ba was ecstatic knowing about that when you guys phoned this evening .

Though I missed all the excitement as I had fallen asleep in the Rec Room sofa (lazyBoy) while watching TV.

Her (Maya’s) captivating photo (from her Cuba experience) is still on our computer Dashboard – and will soon be replaced by Kieran’s photo.

Have a nice and Happy Valentine day ! I am sure you will pamper both the kids that day.

love

:):):) dad pravin
All in all – everyone had a great excitement celebrating 2015 Valentine day.
Monday 16 February 2015 – being a Family day in Ontario – there were no schools and the work offices were closed . So Sitara and Sachin spent afternoon at the the Mackenzee Community swimming pool   (brought there by their parents) and then all came over to nana/nani place .
Sitara can now   (since about a month) can independently work at the Nana’s Computer and can use “google” to call up the Programs that she or Sachin want to watch.     She is slowly learning to use the keyboard   and now has her own account and pass word ( the details of which her nana does not know   but her parents know ) . Sachin is also a fast learner and he picks up the pointers from his sister – though refrains to demand time on computer as a derference to her sister.
The kids earlier played cards with their parents ( while dinner was being prepared by their nani aided at times by their mom and also by kids .
After dinner, the adults played a card game   ”   Whist – Chokdi ”   whilethe kids were busy enjoying kiddie ( Paddington)   movie on the computer .     So the evening ended and by 8.00 pm they were all gone back to Mackey.
Monday 16 February 2015
It seems that   this   being a Family day in Ontario ( being funny here) – Kieran had some fun time and showed a bit of independence   and a small milestone in his growth (being now 11 months old)   –   his dad sent an e-mail ( same date as 16 February 2015)   with a photo –   and giving a   title   ”   Kieran joins the Toilet paper club ” – Kieran geting hold of a toilet roll in the bathroom – brings it out in the passage and then tears the paper in bits and pieces – having fun and showing on his face an achievement .
His grandma (in Toronto – with whom earlier Kieran/Maya had spent Valentine night — then responded with her e-mail   (same date) as below:
”   By the way, he went through a box of Kleenex at my house on Saturday. “
To that –   his Bapuji (in Deep River) responded (same date) – as below:
”     Well , it seems a courageous independent thinking – a small milestone in
his growth.     Now nothing will be spared – specially paper products. ”
Saturday 21 February 2015
This day , Kieran’s dad sent an e-mail along with his photo   – e- mail titled ” Kieran loving Mohawk   “
Here is what he wrote:
Kieran really loves the giraffe, Mohawk, you gave him for Christmas. In fact on three occasions he has said “gi-rah” when looking at giraffes. Coincidence? Language? Who knows. I can hope.Maya also says, “bring some snow pants” when you come in March.
So the name   “Mohawk” was given to the   stuffed animal – due to a good “mane” that the animal has.
Most important news is that Kieran has started mouthing real words   – like   ” on three occasions he has said “gi-rah” when looking at giraffes.
Talking with Kieran’s dad on Sunday 22 February 2015 – it was noted that Kieran is becoming confident standing up – albeit holding onto something , and then walking holding onto something and have started climbing the stairs   (needing   always a watchful eye) . The stairs are blocked with gates – thus Kieran is protected when the adults are not around.
Kieran also babbles a lot – trying to communicate – thus he calls out to “gi-rah” – his pet stuffed giraffe .
This day Sunday 22 February 2015 , in the morning Maya went for her gym session with her dad and then for ice skating in the evening.
Sunday 22 February 2015

Sitara’s mom posted the following on her Facebook page.

Sitara quote as she jumped up and down tonight “I didn’t know math could be so fun!!”.

Wow! Sitara – you are giving nana a very substantial joy – for your comment on the   ” math” being fun   . I always found that when I was young.

Tuesday 24 February 2015
This day – there was a program at Mackenzie Community School in Deep River   – to present “merit” certificates to deserving students . Sitara was to receive a Certificate for being ” caring”   in her class and so was Sachin in his class . Both nana/nani were to attend the presentation .
But unfortunately that did not happen   – as nana took ill ( apparently he lost his memory for a short time) – and kids’ nani noticed that just about lunch time   and thus instead of going over to the School ( the program was to start at 2.30 pm) , nana was taken to the Emergency Department of the Deep River and Area Hospital . Nana was kept at the Hospital (under observation and few tests   – blood test and pressure checking   . Finally the attending doctor thought – may be it was an impact of possibly low   “sugar levels ” – nana being diabetic ( Type II )     or could be a TIA (   transient ischaemic attack ) effect.
NOTE:   The symptoms of a TIA are similar to that of stroke, but they may only last a short while, certainly no more than 24 hours. If symptoms last longer than 24 hours but are mild usually this would be defined as a ”˜minor stroke”™.
The terms ”˜TIA”™, ”˜minor stroke”™ and ”˜mini stroke”™ were used by people to describe what they had experienced, based on the diagnosis they had been given by their GP or consultant.
Luckily, for nana it remained for a few hours . However, the physician(s) thought it was a better / safer to get a CT scan in Pembroke Hospital – which was requested ( inter hospital communication) .
Thus nana went (with nani) to Pembroke Hospital next day   (on Wednesday 25 February 2015) and had the CT scan carried out.   There was no issue -shown by the scan – as per Nana’s doctor who got the results the same day within a short time.   Note: Kids’ mom currently work at the Pembroke Hospital   –   as a   ” locum ” Pharmacist.
Of course both kids (Sitara and Sachin) each one of them got a Certificate for being “caring” in   their class and school. Fortunately, their dad was at the presentation   (their mom being at work in Pembroke at the time).   Congratulations !
Well, after work kids’ mom came over to Deep River , visited nana at the hospital and as the situation was under control – she decided tp proceed to her “Art -painting class ” in Petawawa   after kids’ skating session at the Deep River Arena   and having dinner at nana/nani home   – nani had already prepared the dinner ( Lasanza)   before lunch .
Nina came home in Deep River after 9.30 p.m with a painting she had drawn and painted                           ( beautiful – well done ) with white orchard flowers .     She spent the nite at Deep River – just to be close by her dad – if any need arises.
Note: nana had also completed a poem for celebrating the 1st birthday of the grandson (Kieran) in Toronto –   . This was prior to the situation he got into for   ” lowered blood sugar “- which ended up taking him to ER at the Deep River Hospital.
Thursday 26 February 2015
This day kids came for dinner at nana/nani home after their skating session at the Deep River Arena. They came with their parents .     The dinner visit for to-day was arranged   as they did not come on Tuesday ( due to nana’s health -see above) but now nana was feeling much better and thus kids wanted to spend time with him.
After the dinner, kids were busy with their homework and then a   bath – after that Sitara came over where nana was sitting in the living room ( with the Samsung Galaxy Tablet )   – that he got recently.   Sitara took the tablet and wanted to access her Google Drive account to show her nana what she has achieved within that space. However, she was not announced as the user on the Tablet – So her dad fixed that and then Sitara was showing her nana what she has done – like organising art pieces   (accessed by her from the internet ) etc.   and then she accessed o You Tube – some songs that she has been looking at (presumably as part of her school project)   . Lo Behold! she then started singing a song – so beautiful voice –   while following the song on the Samsung Tablet.   That was very refreshing to nana and made him proud of Sitara’s ability/talent.
Nana had also spent time with Sachin – playing with him – with   his “paper aeroplane” – that he had made.
Friday   27 February 2015
On Friday (27 February 2015) they went ( driven by parents) to Ottawa – so they can go to the show   – Disney On Ice presents Worlds of Fantasy at   the Canadian Tire Centre in Ottawa .
Note: Its a non-stop fun with four of Kids favourite Disney stories when   Disney On Ice   presents Worlds of Fantasy – this is one-of-a-kind skating spectacular.
———————-
Commentary:

The on-ice excitement begins when an adventurous Mickey Mouse embarks on a journey with Minnie Mouse to uncover each world of fantasy, but the plan goes awry when their cherry red roadster unexpectedly breaks down. Although Donald Duck and Goofy try, it takes the assistance of the coolest cars on the ice to get the pistons firing again. Direct from Radiator Springs, Mater, Lightning McQueen and Sally speed into action, zipping and zooming around the frozen highway in an effort to re-energize the roadster.

As Mickey and Minnie’s road trip continues, the whimsical scenery transforms the arena into an environment that captures the essence of each unique world to follow. Fluorescent coral and clam shell drums embody Ariel’s world in The Little Mermaid and audiences enter the colourful fantasy land of fairies for the Tinker Bell segment.

The toys are back in town during the second act of Worlds of Fantasy, which brings together all the fun, humour and warmth of the beloved Disney Pixar film Toy Story 3. Woody, Jessie, Buzz Lightyear and the rest of the familiar gang hit the ice for the ultimate Toy Story experience.

Worlds of Fantasy offers the perfect combination of elements for fans of Disney On Ice. “From the contemporary feel of Cars and Toy Story 3 to the timeless quality of The Little Mermaid and Tinker Bell, audiences will see four completely different Disney worlds brought to life,” says producer Kenneth Feld. “All of this provides a value that is truly unparalleled in the world of live family entertainment. More than ever before, there’s something for everyone

After the show , their mom posted photos and commentary   for the Sitara and Sachin’s   participation in the fun   ( the posting was done after Friday mid-night / early saturday )

for Sitara she wrote ( accompanied by a photo) :

Queen Elsa (Sitara) commanding the Green Army Men from Toy Story 3 at Disney on Ice tonight

Sitara standing on a table   dressed in her Princess dress (bluish /peacocky color top   – over   a white   dress   under ) – and in front on the dance floor – Green Army men were dancing .

Commentary Note : The Green Army Men were Andy’s  200 miniature green plastic soldiers, led by Sarge .

In Toy Story, the Green Army Men are sent on a mission to spy on  Andy’s  birthday presents so that the other toys can be prepared for any new arrival

In Toy Story 3, the Green Army Men are seen during old home videos and a photo with Andy playing with them like he normally did.

At the end of the movie, the Green Army Men finally land in a playground at  Sunnyside Daycare.  Barbie and  Ken, now leaders of Sunnyside, walk over to greet them. Ken salutes the soldiers as Barbie directs them to the  sandbox, inviting them to join the party. It is possible that the Green Army Men have settled at Sunnyside under Barbie and Ken’s leadership. That night, they are seen standing on the ceiling lights in the Butterfly Room, lowering a disco ball under Sarge’s command for Bookworm to light it up with his flashlight so the Sunnyside toys can enjoy a disco that is held in the room.

———————

for Sachin she wrote ( accompanied by a photo) :

Sachin as “Oct-Timus” Prime sans mask

Sachi was posing (in   front) with “Oct-Timus” characters   in his   ” Oct-timus”   outfit

Commentary Note : It should be read as   ” Optimus ” prime .

Optimus Prime is a fictional character from the  Transformers franchise. Prime is the leader of the Autobots, a faction of transforming robots from the planet Cybertron. The Autobots are constantly waging war against a rival faction of transforming robots called Deceptions. He is depicted as a brave, powerful, wise and compassionate leader who puts his talent to use improving the universe around him.

Sunday 01 March 2015

This day, the kids participated in a downhill ski competition at Mount Molson Club in Petawawa.       It was   a team effort competition.   The kids went there accompanied by their parents .

—————-

NOTE:   Mount Molson – It may be a small ski hill – but it sure has a strong following and great opportunities for newbies to the more seasoned skier and snowboarder.

On a peak overlooking the Ottawa River, Mount Molson boasts a vertical drop of only 125 feet. However, it has become synonymous with alpine skiing and has grown a reputation as one of Ontario’s smallest ski hills.

—————

The team in whch each kid was part of – won a gold medal   . So Sitara’s team won a gold medal and also Sachin team wao a gold medal .

Both nana/nani are proud of the kids for participating and their team winning the competition – for their age group.   Congratulations!

After skiing at Mount Molson – the family went for fun downhill skiing at Mount Martin Ski Club in Deep River .   It seems all of them have good energy/stamina   for such duo activities.   – 2 hills in   day.

Sunday 01 March 2015

Blast from the past – Maya looked very regal ( in the photo sent by her mom) wearing a dress made by her great -grandma ( Opal in Huntsville, Ontario) .

Here is what her mom said in the e-mail sent   on 1 March 2015 – titled: The family dress.

” Here is Maya wearing a dress made by her great-grandmother and previously worn by her mother and aunts. Interestingly, she is also playing with a toy phone that belonged to Sunir as a child, so this is a true “blast from the past” photo! “

Maya is a link in the the family chain.

Tuesday   03 March 2015

Today marks a milestone in Kieran’s life.   He is stepping out into the larger world.

He started his advancement in life by joining in a daycare (in the neighbourhood) just before his 1st Birthday ( on 12 March 2015)   – a daycare where his sister goes since last couple of years.   Note: Last year Maya was going only for few days/week as her mom as at home ( from having Kieran)

Here is an e-mail dated 3 March 2015 from his mom – titled : Starting daycare.

” As of this week, Maya is back in daycare full-time in the preschool room and Kieran has started in the infant room. Here he is checking out some of the new toys at daycare. Today I dropped him off for three hours and he did very well (I also coped, by the way!) He cried for a couple minutes at drop-off but then settled down, played, ate lunch, etc. He is now sleeping soundly… I think all the excitement tired him out!
Well done, Kieran.

a Historical note:   Kieran – your dad (when he was your age) was just keen to go to daycare (school) – and was not at all scared or emotional .   Though your Ba was (emotional and cried for a few hours – feeling lonely)   – losing the day company of her young baby son Sunir.

Thursday 05 March 2015

This day kids (Sitara and Sachin) came over to nana/nani home with their parents -after their ice skating session at the Arena in Deep River .   This was good as nana/nani are planning to go to Toronto (to spend some time with Maya and Kieran ) on coming Saturday and they would be gone for a few days ( at least a week or 10 days) and kids would then not be able to be with their nana/nani for some days.

All had dinner and then spent fabulous time together.   Sachin did his homework with nana ( reading three (3) school reading books ) and then playing with nani with his ”   paper aeroplane -oragami ) . This guy has a mechanical mind.

Sitara had brought with her –   her comicbook   – “Archie”. This is nana’s   favouite Comic book – since when he was young . So nana was pleasantly surprised that Sitara is already into reading and enjoying thiss comic book.   she had been reading this comic book (on and off)   since about last two years.     The upshot of this is that She spent time with nana and had nana read the book with her.         It was fun.

Sitara also worked on her school homework on the computer – now being able to get to her site through Mozilla Firefox medium . She is so comfortable using nana’s computer – all by herself as she had been using this comptuer since last few years.   She also knows how to send an e-mail message ( which she does to her her mom)   – this evening she was showing her nani how she does that. She also asked he nani if she has an e-mail account.   Her nani has an e-mail account established with “google” on the Samsung Galaxy 4 tablet ( recently her mom obtained from Ottawa as requsted by her nana/nani) . Her nani will give Sitaar her e-mail address when nana/nani return from Toronto   visit to Maya and Kieran.

Then their time came to go home (to Mackey) and were gone at about 8.30 pm.

——————

Note:

Though they were at nana/nani home on Monday ( 2 March 2015) for dinner   – picked up by nana/nani from their baby-sitter’s (Jeannett)   home at 4.45 p.m   ( their parents having gone to Calabogie for the day – skiing ) .

They had a great time playing/intefacing with their nana/nani. Sachin having done his homework (in the company of his nana) – reading his books   (2 of these) and Sitara on thw computer . These days she has an account on Google Draw (from the school)   – however she did not work on her homework at that site as access was somehow not allowed by using Internet Explorer medium.

She managed to get to the site (and do her homework) after her parents arrived (back from Calabogie at about 8.00 pm)   – this time her dad helped   (tried using the Mozilla Firefox medium – and it worked ). It seems the Internet Explorer has difficulties these days -and thus nana had also switched over to Mozilla Firefox medium for most of his computer needs.

The kids then   were driven home in Mackey by their parents   at about 9.00 pm .

Saturday   07 March 2015

Maya’s and Kieran’s Ba/Bapuji   ( i.e   Sitara/Sachin’s nana/nani) will be travelling to Toronto   for visit and spending some time with Maya and Kieran – and celebarting Kieran’s first birthday .

————————–

Ba/Bapuji’s Visit to Toronto – between Saturday 07 March 2015 and Tuesday 17 March 2015

Grandparents Joy

This visit to Toronto was planned earlier at the request of   our son Sunir – as during that week he was to go to USA ( Austin, Texas) and also Shannon (our daughter-in-law) was preparing for a job interview at a Health Center in Oshawa , Ontario .  The timing of this job interview was such that Sunir would be away to USA .   Our going there would help to ease the load on their shoulders and relieve a bit of stress for caring of the grandchildren and looking after the household.

In any case , this was  a great moment   to spend time with our two grandchildren (Maya and Kieran) in Toronto whom we have not seen since the Christmas 2014 – when they had all come to Deep River to celebrate holidays with their grandparents and cousins (Sitara and Sachin).   This was also an opportune time to go – first to go away from the deep chill of Deep River  (winter temperatures in below teens ) but further it was a celebratory time in the family   – our grandson Kieran’s first birthday coming up on Thursday 12 March 2015 .

So we (the grandparents) got all readied , packed our luggage and sundries and drove (in our maroon 2001 Dodge minivan) on Saturday 07 March 2015 to go to Toronto.  It was a clear day and roads were excellent for the drive and thus we arrived at Sunir/Shannon home in Toronto at just after 4.00 pm   as planned.

Saturday 07 March 2015

Arrived safely in Toronto at about 4.00 p.m

Kieran has nine teeth – 5 top and 4 bottom

Maya – a bubbly girl as ever

Maya had earlier in the day gone to view a Robot Competition at Maple Leaf Gardens – with her dad

All had dinner together .

After dinner and after the kids had gone tio bed- the adults played cards ( ” Chokdi ” – a sort of Whist game)

Note:   The classic game of whist is a plain-trick game without bidding for 4 players in fixed partnerships.

Sunday 08 March 2015

Both Maya and Kieran were cheerful when they came down   (from their bedroom) in the morning . Maya worked with her mom to decorate the   Dining area with streamers and balloons – all getting ready for celebrating Kieran’s 1st Birthday – though a few days earlier as Kieran’s dad was to travel to USA early morning of 12 March 2015 .

Wow- Kieran was in the celebratory element – he played with balloons and with his big stuffed dog – his favourite. Maya was also vey playful and going hither and thither – and then also tried to play a game of ‘Go Fish” with her Bapuji but ended up playing the game with her mom instead.   One hour of morning was so splendid – both kids all excited (and enjoying themselves) to have their Ba/Bapuji and also to decorate the Dining Room for the Birthday Party in the evening

At 11.00 am – Maya’s dad took her for her weekly Gym class at Barbara Frum Center in the Multi-Purpose Room . Ba/Bapuji also joined in to watch Maya doing her Gym activities.   Ba took some photos of Maya in her Gym activities. Shannon stayed home with Kieran. Maya got a Certificate for her attendance at the Pre-nursery Gymnasium.

At 3.00 pm (after lunch) , Maya went to the Park with her Ba to the play area -across the road from the house -while Kieran went out in stroller with his mom for fresh air.

In the evening of Sunday (at 5.00 pm) – guests started arriving for celebrating Kieran’s Birthday. His Grandma and   Grandpa (Doug and Kathy) came and also his Heather Auntie and Ryan Uncle along with their 5 month old son (Cole) . Cole is Kieran’s ( & Maya’s) cousin.  All had a good party. Kids played and enjoyed the balloons and the cake ( baked by their mom)   .       After the party was over, the relatives went to their home . Maya and Kieran were got ready for bed.

Monday 09 March 2015

This is the day Shannon started to go to her work – after 1 year of absence (for baby care) . Sunir took both kids to their baby care place ( North Younger Daycare) – by walking . This is Kieran’s first year at a   babycare. He seems to have adjusted himself well .

This day the lady (Alice – a Kenyan lady ) came for   domestic   clean-up help at about 9.30 am – for a few hours .   At that time Ba/Bapuji went away from home to the town (on Yonge Street) – so as to not to be a hindrance to Alice’s work.

At the end of the day (about 5.00 pm) Kids were picked up from the daycare by their mom (after work) on her way home.

Tuesday 10 March 2015

This day Ba went with kids’ dad to drop the kids at the daycare   . All went walking to the daycare.   Of course Maya in the stroller and Kieran being snuggly held by his dad.

At the end of the day (about 5.00 pm) Kids were picked up from the daycare by their mom (after work) on her way home.

Ba/Bapuji spent afternoon – going to play duplicate Bridge on Glen park Av. (off Bathurst Road)

After dinner, Ba played a couple of games with Maya . One of the   games was ” Go Fish” card game. Maya knows the rules and how to play very well. After the games, she was happy and went herself to brush her teeth and then went upstairs for sleep.

Wednesday 11 March 2015

This day also Ba went with kids’ dad to drop the kids at the daycare   . All went walking to the daycare.   Of course Maya in the stroller and Kieran being snuggly held by his dad.

Again – Ba/Bapuji spent afternoon – going to play duplicate Bridge on Glen park Av. (off Bathurst Road)

At the end of the day (about 5.00 pm) Kids were picked up from the daycare by their Grandma (Kathy) as she was on her way to a dinner at their friends in the neighbourhood – this allowing Kids’ mom a bit of relaxed time when returning from work .

After dinner, the kids played with Ba/Bapuji before going upstairs for sleep.

Thursday 12 March 2015

Happy   1st Birthday , dear Kieran – your Ba/Bapuji were glad to be in Toronto to celebrate the occasion.

However this day was a hectic one – first Kieran’s dad had to leave for Austin, Texas at 11.00 am to attend a business conference – of which his dad was one of the organisers and to complicate that one –   Kieran’s mom had a very busy day – she had an interview with a Health Unit in Oshawa , Ontario for a position of a Developmental Pediatrician – the job she is looking forward to start after completing her present advanced study in   pediatrics.

Both kids were dropped at the Daycare in the morning by her mom (by walking) and after that she got ready to drive to Oshawa by noon.   Both kids were picked up from the Daycare by their mom – after she had arrived back from Oshawa – at about 4.00 pm

Though Kieran’s birthday party was already held on Sunday 8 March 2015 and much celebration was had at that time .

For his actual birthday (that is today) – his Ba had a cake already baked from Deep River – which Maya helped to decorate with candy sprinklers and putting on a special candle   on the cake. This cake was cut in the evening and shared .    Also the house was filled with noises from various “kazoos” – Maya was   great trumpeter.

Kieran’s cousin Cole had come along with his mom      ( Heather – Kieran/Maya ‘s Auntie) to celebrate once again Kieran’s Birthday. Kieran’s Grandma (Kathy) had also come -and later his Grandpa (Doug) also joined in .

Note: All these day when Ba/bapuji were in Toronto – it as noted that Maya likes wearing   a cape over shoulders – different   ones – some she makes by herself .

Friday 13 March 2015

Kieran and Maya were dropped by her mom to the daycare – this day they were driven by their mom in their Subaru Outback car – as Shannon started her Advanced study (after an absence for   a year to nurse baby Kieran) .   Both were picked up from the daycare earlier by their mom – as it was the day for Kieran’s check-up with his doctor and also to get vaccination shots ( 2 ) – One for mumps and the other for meningitis . well Kieran took it well (though painful) – one shot in each arm .

Saturday 14 March 2015

This day Maya went to participate in her weekly activity at the “Construction Junction “.  In the afternoon – Maya went to attend a birthday party (driven by her mom) .

At both times – Kieran stayed home (mostly napping ) with his Ba/Bapuji to keep a babysitting watch.     As noted – kids’ dad was still in Austin , USA.

Bapuji read a book to Maya and played a board game with Maya prior to her going to the Birthday party.

—————–

Note:   Girls and boys go beyond just blocks in Construction Junction. This advanced art program lets children learn how to plan, build, and construct their own 3-D art projects! Roads, towers, monuments, and pyramids are just a sample of the structures to be introduced, imagined, and created with wood, collage, cloth, clay, and more.

The Construction Junction class is 45 minutes long. There are 16 weeks in the session.

Ages: 3 to 5 years

—————

Sunday 15 March 2015

Maya had another birthday party to attend in the morning . Two (2) Birthday parties in a weekend. And the evening all went – by walking   (of course Maya was in a stroller and Kieran was /harnessed / held by her mom)   – to Doug/Kathy (kid’s grandparents in Toronto) home for a dinner . All had a great time and after walking back home – the kids were tired and ready for sleep.

Monday  16 March 2015

The routine of kids being dropped to the daycare in the morning by their mom (in the car) and then having been picked up from the daycare in the evening was in place.

Both Ba/Bapuji spent the day at home with leisure and relaxation – though Ba was slightly occupied preparing dinner.

Kids dad arrived back home from Austin, USA (after a slight delay in the plane at Chicago)   at midnight

Tuesday 17 March 2015

Both kids were excited to see their dad .   Again, they were dropped to Daycare.

Ba/Bapuji left Toronto to return to Deep River ( en route via The Briars at Jackson’s Point, Ontario) .

Friday 06 March 2015

Both   kids (Sitara and Sachin) came to nana/nani home – a three consecutive days .They were to go to a choir in Deep River but instead decided to spend a further evening with nana/nani – before they go off to Toronto for a longer duration

Saturday 07 March 2015

Both Sitara and Sachin participated in the Pat Harvey Fun Day at the Mt. Martin Ski Hill in Deep River – where they took part in a downhill ski competition – Sitara won a bronze medal in her age group.

Christmas, 2012

The following “Letter to Editor” titled Christmas, 2012 was compiled and sent to North Renfrew Times (Deep River) for publication. Also it was circulated to few friends to read the writing.

Christmas, 2012

The time rolls on and we are here once more to celebrate the Christmas holidays .

Some people are a bit annoyed that the holidays have lost its adjective ” Christmas” and have taken a new   adjective ” Seasonal “.   This is to accommodate many Canadians who are atheists , agnostics, non-Christians amongst us. For example I am a Hindu born in a Jain family.   Personally, I would prefer it still     be called what it really is – it is a ” Christmas Holidays ” .

We all enjoy the festivities and to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ on this earth.   He was a   personification of divine attributes that lie underlain in a human soul.

He is believed to be a “saviour” by his followers.   This coming of Jesus was heralded and anointed by the three wise men from the East . The history of his struggles and ultimate crucifixion is well known and recited many times by his followers and others. He was arrested, tried and sentenced by Pontius Pilate to be scourged and finally executed on a cross.

The world learnt the lesson of love, fellowship and forgiveness from the message expounded by Jesus Christ.   The Roman Empire was at the time very mean & rough on the conquered and also on its own citizens . The injustices were very prevalent and Jesus came on this earth to open up a new understanding and divinity of human life.   This was not welcome by the Roman Authority as they were rather frightened by the revolutionary message of love and dignity for all.

So when the message started to spread, it took some years before King Constantine, the first Roman emperor, converted himself to be a Christian and proclaimed the tolerance of all religions throughout the empire.

The “Saviour” is unfortunately being mistakenly presented as he is only a Saviour for the followers of Christianity. This does not rhyme well from his message as when he proclaimed these divine messages, there was no labeled “Christianity” religion.   One can follow Jesus’ preaching without being converted to so called Christian religion.

Most wars and destruction came by colonial powers and within the so called Christian nations during the Spanish War, 1st and 2nd World wars – many within the European continent and around the world were decimated. There was death & destruction. Jesus remained an anchor for many, individually, during these distressful times . His sacrifice and message of love and forgiveness, over the time, gave to the realization of justice, equality and racial harmony in many nations as well as codification of human rights .   Through many trials and retributions, the human race is slowly coming to mutual respect and love for the living. A spiritual thought which will carry us in this life and life after.

My family & I wish all a very Happy Christmas holidays and a Happy new Year.

Count Your Blessings

The article below was circulated to  family & friends as part of the 2006 Christmas Greetings.

Also it was delivered during Puja at Usha & Subhash Sutradar’s   residence on Monday  01 January, 2007

                                                                                                                                                                                                                2006 December 18

Count your blessings

It”™s easy to forget about the true meaning of the holidays when you are caught in the chaos of baking and decorating, hosting parties and shopping for presents.

Here are six reasons for saying thanks:

1)         Be Grateful ”“being grateful for something ”“ whether it is a beautiful sunrise, a surprise phone call or a cup of hot coffee on a cold morning ”“ encourages you to savour it, making it “good to the last drop”
2)         Be Grateful ”“ It can conquer perfectionism. Gratitude helps you recognize that even though everything isn”™t perfect, there are things in your life that are both good and wonderful.
3)         Be Grateful ”“ It can help your health. Studies have shown that when you practice positive emotions like gratitude, there is an increase in life expectancy. People who are more grateful take better care of themselves.
4)         Be Grateful ”“It can improve your relationship. It”™s easy to take the people we love for granted ”“after all they”™re always around. But appreciating what you have can change how you see friends and family, and in turn, how they see you.
5)         Be Grateful ”“ Grateful people tend to have healthier coping patterns, enabling them to deal more effectively with negative events.
6)         Be Grateful ”“ It can make you a better person. People who count their blessings are more likely to help others or offer emotional support to those who need it.

Count your blessings and let your gratefulness motivate you to do something good for the world.   Prayers are one way to express our gratitude for this life and all that we experience and enjoy.

To be able to count your blessings is a special skill. And it is a skill, like drawing or singing or parallel parking ”¦ you may be born with a natural ability toward it but you can improve it.   It just takes practice.   And, like any other skill, the more you do it, the easier it is.

True message of love

Maulana Wahiduddin Khan

Christmas is the festival of the Christian Church observed annually on the 25th day of December in memory of the birth of Jesus Christ. The birth of Christ marks an exceptional event in human history. Islam, too, has attached very great importance to it. The holy Quran says: “Peace be on the day Jesus Christ was born” (19:33). These words are extremely meaningful, for the most distinctive aspect of Christ’s personality is that he became a symbol of peace in human history. In his life he demonstrated that peace is power, rather it is the greatest power. It is not the name of just one quality. It is a combination of certain qualities, like love, compassion, kindness, mercy, forgiveness and tolerance.

Jesus Christ was a perfect model of these qualities which he was able to transmit to his followers. These were responsible for making his followers a distinctive group, and, without doubt, qualities that guaranteed their success despite the odds they faced in the early days of their history. This finds expression in the holy Quran in these words: “We gave Christ the Gospel and put compassion and mercy in the hearts of his followers.” (57:27). In another chapter the Quran states: “The nearest in affection to the Muslims are those who say: ‘We are Christians’. That is because there are priests and monks among them; and because they are free from pride.” (5:82-83).

I would like to refer to a relevant hadith (Prophet’s saying) recorded in Sahih Muslim, which is regarded as the most authentic collection of traditions after Sahih Al Bukhari. Mustaurid, a companion of the Prophet, reported that the Prophet (Blessings of God be upon him) said: “The Day of Judgement will not come until the Christians outnumber all other people (owing to their special qualities).” In the classical literature of Islam, Christ and Christianity find reference in many forms. Christ has been called the “Spirit of God” (4:171) in the Quran. Of Mary, the Quran has this to say: “We breathed into her of Our spirit, and made her and her son a sign to all men.” (21:91).

Although Mohammad as a Prophet of God is referred to in the Quran about one thousand times, He is referred to by name in the Quran only five times. In contrast, the Quran mentions the name of Jesus Christ no less than 36 times and of Mary 34 times. This shows the great importance Islam attaches to Jesus and his mother, Mary. The importance of Christmas lies in its being the source of social interaction on a vast scale. Christmas reminds us of one of the greatest human value put in words by Christ himself: “Love your enemy.” We are definitely in need of such doctrines of peace in a period when hatred pervades our mindset. The Christmas message for all of us can be: Love all, including your enemy.

Good news of great joy

There is no record in history of two groups fighting for a position of pre-eminence in a cowshed, or for the possession of one. Was that the reason Jesus was born in one? The good thing about a cowshed is that all are welcome to it. A cowshed transcends all labels of discrimination of caste, class, creed or gender. That is what a cowshed shares with festivals.

Festivals are celebrations. But what is it that they celebrate? Is not every festival a celebration of our liberation? Festivals bring people together. For that to happen, they have to be liberated, first, from all exclusive and excluding barriers. All social and religious barriers are suspended for the sake of festivals.

Then, all people feel at home with Christmas. There is a good reason for this. Jesus was born outside the man-made system, every one of which- everything in the sphere of religion and politics-is oppressive. Jesus was born outside the minefields of power and profit. If Jesus were born in a palace, it would have been under the shadow of power. Had Mary given birth to him in an inn, it would have been under the clouds of profit-motive. The world of power and profit stifles the spirit of festivity.

Jesus does not belong to a religious system! Look at the details of the story of his birth. You do not see a single priest in it. The shepherds, the angels, the animals, the wise men from the East are all there. But the representatives of the priestly class are conspicuous by their absence! If Jesus does not belong to a religious establishment, he belongs to the people! All people. Those familiar with his teachings and his dealing with people would readily agree. Everyone- prostitute, leper, outcaste, the poor, the unclean-was acceptable to him. Not everyone, really. He was allergic to hypocrites. And he found them mostly among religious leaders.

According to the Bible, the birth of Jesus is “good news of great joy”. What is this good news? Surely, it is not news about a special heaven reserved for Christians. It is, on the contrary, good news about the possibility of being authentic human beings. We are children of God. If we are truly human, we will reflect on the nature of God. God’s nature expresses itself through spiritual values like love, compassion, truth and justice. None of these values is exclusive to any religion. In fact, religions have little to do with these virtues. Christmas is, hence, not a religious festival at all. If it were, it would not have been a universal festival.

Christmas is not about eating cakes or imbibing alcohol. It is about discovering and celebrating who we are. That is a basic human need. That being the case, it would be rather surprising if people all over the world were not to respond to it instantaneously.

Different flavours

By Dominic Emmanuel, svd

Hardly a few weeks have passed since we celebrated Diwali in India. And Delhi, nay many metros around the country, are once again all dressed up wearing a festive look. And despite the foggy mornings and evenings, Christmas carols which rent the air and Santa Claus with his red cap and suit and artificial Christmas trees, the atmosphere in many parts of the country is showing signs that they are not going to be left behind from rest of the world when it comes to celebrating Christmas.

And celebrations are connected with the 2,000 years’ old event of the birth of Jesus Christ. Though Jesus was born nearly 2,000 years ago, the first celebrations of Christmas began almost 400 years after that event; from then on Christmas is celebrated all over the world with great devotion, solemnity and gaiety.

A few things commonly associated with Christmas all over the world are decorations of all kinds, not missing the Crib with the images of the Holy Family, carol singing, Christmas cards, Christmas cakes and indeed endless shopping. There might be some minor differences in the way some of the above mentioned items are handled which all depends in the country in which one is celebrating the festival or sometimes within the same country, depending on the State where one is celebrating it. And that is possibly the most interesting thing about Christmas.

It is one festival that is celebrated in all the five continents of the world. And the fact that it is celebrated in practically all the countries in the world, it is bound to be coloured by the local cultures, beliefs, customs and indeed the climate of that country. So while it is a snow-filled “White Christmas” in Europe, Canada, North America or in the whole of the Northern Hemisphere, it is a Christmas with sunshine and tents on beaches in all the countries of the Southern Hemisphere.

And what about those countries which are neither hot nor cold? For instance, Christmas carols and decorations in the Philippines, the only Catholic country in the East, begin by October already. Filipinos by nature are sweet-natured and fun-loving. So they get into Christmas mood well ahead of December 25, sometimes towards the beginning of October. But they have also another interesting religious tradition, which starts nine days before Christmas and which is popularly called “Missa de Galio”. This is the celebration of the Holy Mass (worship) which begins everyday at 4.00 am and is attended by a large number of people with great fervour and devotion. It is a tradition that was brought from Spain; they being the colonisers of the Philippines for nearly four centuries.

The decorations in the high streets of Japan, Hong Kong, Macao, Singapore and parts of Korea and Taiwan before and during Christmas, however, surprises everyone, as these are not “Christian countries” per se. But one soon realises the impact Christmas has made on the people world over, though not necessarily always with its core message of love and peace.

Moving over to the Western countries, the Christmas celebrations, though fundamentally the same as far as writing cards, carol singing, cakes, midnight mass, Christmas cribs and trees are concerned, there is still a lot of difference between them. To start with, everyone expects it to be a “White Christmas”. Snow is one decoration provided by nature to the otherwise dead looking trees, with the exception of the pine and fur trees (that is how they came to be known as Christmas trees as they do not shed leaves even in the most severe winter). Once in Germany a few years ago there was no snow fall during Christmas, and while I was very happy not having to encounter biting cold, people looked rather gloomy due to its absence.

But India adds a different flavour to Christmas celebrations. Apart from the adaptation of Christmas carols in Hindi or in other regional languages, the celebrations in tribal areas are quite unique and different from the rest of the world. In some tribal areas of Madhya Pradesh, where I had had an opportunity to work and celebrate Christmas, some of them identified Christmas with their own harvest festival. What makes Christmas also different in these areas is the totally local cultural adaptations of celebrations such as dances with drum beats and special dance steps that last for hours on end.

Another unique aspect of Christmas in India is the custom of people going to the homes of Christian friends to greet them for Christmas. This is an aspect that is missing in most other countries of the world and is very much cultural to India where people, besides being more friendly and sociable, make little distinction with each other because of their religious adherence.

The Speaking Christmas Tree

Anil Couto

The feast of Christmas is one of the most beautiful in the Christian calendar. It is the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ, the Saviour of humankind, as evangelist John puts it starkly at the very beginning of his Gospel:

In the beginning was the Word,

and the Word was with God,

and the Word was God.

He was in the beginning with God.

All things came to be through him,

And without him nothing came to be.

What came to be through was life,

And this life was the light of the human race,

The light shines in the darkness,

And the darkness has not overcome it.” (Jn 1:1-5).

We celebrate the revelation of this divine truth that the Eternal Word has become a human being and has come to live among us so that humanity may be saved. John says further:

And the Word became flesh

And made his dwelling among us,

And we saw his glory, the glory as of the Father’s only Son,

Full of grace and truth (Jn 1:14).

This relationship between God and humanity established in Jesus Christ is one in which God has fully and definitively held the whole of humanity in his embrace of love. We call this “grace”, as John describes:

From his fullness we have all received, grace in place of grace,

because while the law was given through Moses,

grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. (Jn 1:16).

To speak of Christmas is to speak of the infinite mystery of God’s love become incarnate in Jesus Christ. He is the full and total embodiment of divine love. Further on in his Gospel St John says: “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life” (Jn 3:16).

Jesus Christ, as St Paul says in one of his letters, is the visible image of the invisible God. In him we have come to know that our sins are forgiven and that we are reconciled with God and with one another. In other words, we have become God’s children and heirs of his eternal kingdom. And as children of light, our thoughts, words and deeds have always to conform to this inner reality. This is the path of salvation and newness of life to which the whole of humanity is called. To each and every human being Jesus Christ reveals his/her divine as well as human identity and vocation.

This great news of the incarnation of the Eternal Word to redeem humanity from the clutches of sin and death and to open to us the doors of eternal life of God’s glory was announced by the angels to the poor and simple-hearted shepherds like a news of great joy as narrated in the Gospel of St Mathew:

The angel of the Lord appeared to them (shepherds) and said, “Do not be afraid, for behold, I proclaim to you good news of great joy that will be for all people. For today in the city of David a saviour has been born for you: You will find an infant wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger.” (Mt 2:8-13).

The message of joy is accompanied with that of peace by the same angels:

Glory to God in the highest

and on earth peace to those

on whom his favour rests (Mt 2:14).

The joy, though, is primarily spiritual and of the soul. However, every internal reality has an external expression. This external expression of the internal joy and peace is the reason behind all the festivities of material nature connected with Christmas. The exchange of greetings and of gifts, the dancing and the merry-making, the yuletide singing, the many different types of cookies and dishes that people love to make and enjoy, the variety of programmes for children, etc, all have their foundation in the spiritual joy.

Unfortunately, today’s commercial world emphasises to such an extent the material aspect of Christmas that the true spiritual meaning is either downplayed or overshadowed and forgotten. This secular understanding of Christmas as a “holiday” time and a cultural festival emerged in the West and is slowly creeping into India, too. Nevertheless, we can be thankful to God that the spiritual content of the feast of Christmas is still very much alive in India because we are basically a land of profound spirituality.

In India, Christmas is as much a national festival as any other like Diwali and Dusshera. Although the main celebrating community is of the Christians, yet by and large it finds an echo in everyone’s heart. There is a general Christmas spirit that pervades the nation as December 25 approaches. This is set in motion by the exchange of greeting cards and the various Christmas festival concessions offered by the Postal Department. The electronic and print media make it a point to cover this festival through a variety of programmes of a cultural, spiritual and informative nature. One gets the impression that all areas of the country whether rural or urban participate in the joy of Christmas.

The Christian community in India celebrates Christmas with the traditional devotion it is known for. All the customary practices associated with Christmas are always maintained and usually enhanced every passing year. In many places the door to door singing of Christmas carols about a week before Christmas marks the beginning of the joyful season. During this period many churches organise special prayer services which are meant for an intense spiritual preparation for Christmas. The focus is always on the purification of the heart and on asking for God’s mercy and pardon so that Christmas can be celebrated with a pure and clean heart.

A couple of days before Christmas, Christian homes are lit up with decorative lights, lanterns, balloons and festoons. The traditional star occupies the central place. It symbolises the star in the New Testament which guided the three wise men from the East to the manger at Bethlehem. A beautifully decorated Christmas tree may also be found in many homes but the one item that cannot be missed is the crib with the images of Mary, Joseph and Child Jesus in it. Parishes across the dioceses of the country will not miss the annual Christmas Tree for children and the much loved “Christmas Father” or Santa Claus. In very many places a variety of competitions are held such as star competition, carol competition, crib competition, etc.

The day of Christmas itself sees thousands of people flocking the churches for the Christmas Masses and prayer services. In all Catholic churches there is the traditional midnight Mass, which usually draws the biggest congregation and is accompanied by melodious choral singing. After the church services, people greet each other with a warm “Merry Christmas”.

Christmas is always a family feast. Whether rich or poor every family tries to unite over a family meal on Christmas day to experience the warmth of love that binds a family together. It also symbolises the wider family of God into which we have been drawn together.

One can notice the thrust towards the poor, the homeless, the downtrodden, the marginalised that characterises the entire celebration of Christmas and its spirit. Churches and other organisations show their special love towards the poor during this season through the distribution of gifts for children, blankets to families, meals, sports and cultural programmes for children and adults of the poorer localities. All this underlines the one message of Christmas, that is, self-sacrificing love.

A dimension of Christmas that is becoming increasingly popular is the inter-religious gathering especially in the North. In places like Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Jharkhand, representatives of all major religions join in a common prayer service for Christmas during which they give their felicitations. In a plural country like ours, this practice will go a long way in helping people enter into the religious experience of each other and build communal harmony.

Also seen is the phenomenon of hundreds of thousands of people who are not Christians flocking to the churches for prayer and “darshan” of the crib. They find peace, joy and healing in the presence of Jesus. Christmas calls us to be humble before the Lord and to lay down all our false pretensions of pride and superiority that are not in accordance with the values of God’s Kingdom. The poverty and powerlessness in which Christ was born calls us to be poor and powerless and to seek the one power alone that can bring salvation to this world, that is, love, which leads to peace.

Nativity Scene – My viewpoint

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                        2005 December 10

Nativity Scene ”“ My viewpoint

The Nativity refers to the birth of Jesus in the city of   Bethlehem. The baby Jesus was born into a manger. The story and circumstance of   the birth is well known in the Christian faith .

During the Christmas season, many places around the world have a long-standing tradition of displaying manger scenes, or crèches, that depict the birth of Jesus. Every Christmas season many people pull out the nativity scenes for annual display.

Here in Deep River. I have noted some fabulous outdoor displays. The display of Nativity scene is a reflection of faith as well as reaffirmation of one”™s resolve to follow the teachings of Lord Jesus.
As I had mentioned in my earlier writing that the birth of Lord Jesus signifies the manifestation of the very best of human traits of love, tolerance, inclusiveness, forbearance, mercy and forgiveness. These traits are universally cherished human values.

During his most famous Sermon of the Mount, Lord Jesus preached to his listeners to:
Ӣ Love your enemies.
Ӣ Do not judge others.
Ӣ Trust God.
”¢ Don’t be anxious about tomorrow.
”¢ Do unto others as you would have them do unto you (The “golden rule”).

This message does reflect and fortify the teachings of my own Hindu faith. I strongly submit that this teaching is a cornerstone of our civilizations.

It is important that in the modern world we do recognize that every birth is a gift of God and to be cherished. One does not know what genius or divine life has come amongst us who would bring scientific discovery, social uplift or divine messages for the happiness and peace.

In Hindu faith, Lord Krishna has clearly stated (in the Bhagwat Gita) that He will come back, from time to time, to rescue the world when society becomes unreligious, corrupt and downright evil. We see from time to time such manifestation occurring all over the world. Because of our ignorance or blind faith, some of us may not recognize these upstanding individuals amongst us.

The Nativity scene celebrates a divine birth and emanates a subtle message of hope and a witness of divine growth, which changed the course of history.

As long as the Nativity scene is not used for proselytizing, it is really a graphic and beautiful way of celebrating the famous birth.
