Christmas 2017 – Christ’s message

On the eve of Christmas coming and with the background of attacks on innocent people all over the world –   I   thought about what an individual can learn   from the ocassion which can strengthen the message of peace.       So after some thinking and studying the subject – I came with the following article (write-up) .

I usually send my articles to local newspaper (North Renfrew Times – NRT ) – for publication.   I have sent   the current article to NRT . However for Christmas articles they wait till last week of December to publish.

In the meantime , I do circulate the articles to my friends or colleagues or bridge partners.

Article:

Christmas   2017 – Christ’s message.

This year the birth of Lord Jesus will be celebrated   as   usual with joy and gusto by the faithful. Christmas parties and festivities will be cheerful and spreading joy all around.

This is the holiday when not only the faithful but also those who belong to other beliefs also join in the festivities due to the Santa Clause phenomenon which is included along with the celebration of the birth of Lord Jesus.   The old “cult” of Santa Claus incorporates many traditions: Christian as well as Pagan

Santa brings everyone together! No matter whether one is a Christian or not.   Kids (of all nationalities) all over the world know who Santa is… And although he may be a little commercial, who can help, but love the jolly old elf?     Toys and gifts become the centerpiece in the festivities.

It’s the idea of giving that reminds us: we are all on this planet together, for the long run.

There are some 2 billion Christians on this planet who believe in the birth of the Son of God . So what message one gets from this occurrence. Why the Son of God is to be born and then persecuted and finally to be nailed on the cross.   Why and what for ?   The faithful may say that He came to remove/wash our sins. The only way is through Jesus. Jesus came so He could die on the cross for ALL of our sins.

Not being of Christian faith myself , I believe there is a deeper message from this occurrence.   Here is the Son of God   born to a virgin mother, had to be a refugee , then persecuted (and do not forget the betrayal by a close confidante ),   finally believed to come alive and walk away from His grave. He is risen. This phenomena of resurrection is the most astounding one.

The conception of Jesus was miraculous. Son of God comes on this earth as a human being. That tells that  human beings are a special species and are important in the scheme of things. So it is critical that we human beings learn to look after each other rather than stockpiling weapons of mass destruction or go berserk and start bombing or shooting the neighbours. We have the obligation to nurture and look after other species like animals, flora and fauna. We need to respect people of all   races, color or nationalities without prejudice. Only then God will be joyful.

Jesus’s  life illustrates to us the greatest weapon in our hands for happiness and that is to be compassionate and forgiving . Even when he was on the cross – tortured and nailed – He asks ” Father, forgive them, for they don’t know what they are doing.”

Jesus’s  life also teaches us to be courageous and not run away like cowards against evil and malicious actions by others but stand up against any injustices   with calm and composed attitude believing in our convictions and prepared for sacrificing our comforts and life, if need be.   Human dignity and rights are paramount and shall be equal for everyone.  Jesus on the cross is a very visible symbol of ” sacrifice ” for a cause.

We know that the Son of God had to be protected from King Harod’s machinations for wanting to kill the new born   and thus the family (Joseph & Mary along with the baby) took refuge in Egypt for two years . The refugees that we welcome these days are not different than what was happening in the old world and who knows amongst the modern refugees one of them may be a messenger for good.   However so far we have not had signs from any heavenly angels or from any wise men. Then Jesus teaches us the value of   ” patience ” and belief in workings of the Almighty.

Jesus teaches us to “turn the other cheek ” and not be violent under any circumstances – any violence or revengeful nature only bring devastation to all and sundry including those who perpetrate violence. This is the quality of divinity – message of God Almighty .  Even when he was betrayed by Judas (Judas was one of the 12 disciples closest to Jesus), Jesus became sad but did not get angry at him but forgave him for his deeds.

Jesus’s resurrection is very ennobling and shows us not to despair for any failure or loss as these failures/losses would be redeemed in one form or another in its own time – if you have conviction and faith.

Christmas is without a doubt my favorite time of the year. It’s the most wonderful time of the year. The family gets together from near and far. All grandchildren go helter-skelter having fun , playing with each other and bringing sound of joy in the household. The exchange of gifts and opening these bring so much excitement and laughter while the nature is showering snowflakes outdoors . One can almost hear the jingle bells in the ears. The Santa parade is a fixture for all to go and enjoy the bond with our neighbors .

Let us remember that the Christmas – celebration of the birth of Lord Jesus – enhances our empathetic attitude, encourage us to share our bounty and for us to remain connected and caring for the world around without any biases and prejudices.

The profound message of Christmas should not be forgotten amidst all the festivities and Santa Clause parade, Christmas Tree decorations, multiple gifts and feasts.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to you all from me and my family.

Our Recent Visit – Oshwal Center in London, U.K. and the Jain Temple

The following article i wrote re: my impressions of the Oshwal Center and JainTemple in LOndon, U.K. – which we recently visited – during the month of September 2017.     The article was sent to the Editor of Oshwal News (published in Londion U.K.) – for a possibility of publishing this article in the newsmagazine.       So far I have not heard from the Editor – of the status of the article.

Our Recent Visit – Oshwal Center in London, U.K. and the Jain Temple

We recently visited the Oshwal Center in London, U.K. and the Jain Temple situated at Potters Bar, Hertfordshire   when my wife and I had an occasion to travel to the U.K. from Canada.

It’s a fabulous place and worth a visit. We in   fact had visited (during our stay in London) the Oshwal Center (& the JainTemple) two (2) times for different programmes. The first one was on   SamvatsarÄ« Lunch day on Sunday 03 September 2017 and the second time was during a Snatra Puja at the Jain Temple on Friday 15 September 2017.

We found the Jain Temple to be very pretty and appealing. During the SamvatsarÄ« Lunch day, we were a tad bit early – so it afforded us time to go over to the Temple – offer our prayers and then went on the grounds to enjoy the garden and many different well carved   ” stambhs – pillars.

The Jain Temple

The Jain Temple is a “Shikhar Bandhi” Jain Temple and is popular with artistic carving.   The inner sacred sanctum houses idols of 3 Tirthankaras   (spiritual teachers of the dharma – righteous path) .   Mul nayak is Mahavir Swami; on his left is Parshvanath and on his right is Adishvara.

There is a ” Hand with Ahimsa Chkara ” on the ground along one side of the Temple. It is called the Ahimsa Hand (Jain Hand) and symbolizes non-violence. It is a right hand shown facing upwards (fingers up), with the thumb slightly pointed out.

Some believe it to be the Saṃsāra, a “wheel of life” on which there are depictions of birth, life, death, and reincarnation/death, along with the actions and consequence”™s of one”™s past, present, and future (Jain Hand).

Over upper level ground – a magnificent grove of trees is planted – some   52 trees – representing 52 villages of Halar.  Note: Halar is a county/borough in Saurashtra , Gujarat, India – from where originally members of our Visa Oshwal community   migrated – about a century ago – to go overseas mostly to Bombay and then to Kenya & other parts of East Africa .

Each tree is planted on its own separated from each other by a fair few feet and each tree is surrounded by a concrete round platform   ( ” Otlo “- a Gujarati term )   depicting the name of a village and donors who have contributed funds towards planting that particular tree & platform.

This Temple is gaining reputation for an excellent place for pilgrimage (by Jain visitors to London) and also by tourists   interested in knowing/understanding other culture/religion/tradition of the world.

The carved artistic temple along with well laid out and spacious garden provides the peaceful and solemn ambience for those seeking spiritual experience.

Samvatsari   Lunch

The Samvatsari lunch was held at the main building – utilizing all the halls   (and a marquee)- as to accommodate many participants who had come to share this joyous but somber day in the Jain calendar.

The   organization was superb, the enthusiasm and caring attitude of the volunteers were exemplary and worth to be proud of. The crowd was well behaved and remained in queue where so needed. We   stood in the queue and there we met some of our London family members and acquaintances. Further we met others in the queue  resulting in   camaraderie.

As the queue wound down to the lower basement hall, we were greeted with smile and   ” namaskar ” by specially posted volunteers welcoming the participants with humility and wishing all of us a nice lunch. This was very profound in lifting our joyous spirit and at the basement hall – we picked up our lunch (chosen by each of us from a variety of menu items) served by volunteers posted at various tables. After pick up of the lunch   – we proceeded to the marquee which was erected next to the Main Building . There we all sat down and had our lunch – with quiet and relaxed manner.

After lunch, we came out to the grounds – from exit side – and there we had some time to mill around meeting more of our family members and some old acquaintances.

After finishing our lunch- we spent some time at the Main Building halls – where the ” health challenged”  guests were served lunch. The love and care shown by the volunteer servers to each and every guest was exceptionally heart-warming.   We ended our visit to the Oshwal Center by 3.30 pm and returned back very contented after enjoying the modern facilities and very warm welcome for the Samvatsari   Lunch.

My admiration and many thanks ( and  ” Koti koti vandan ” ) to all the volunteers who made the day very comfortable.

Snatra Puja

Friday 15 September 2017 ) was a special day at Oshwal Center for Snatra Puja   – which my sister Ranjan and brother-in-law Mahendra would like to participate. So we joined them.   What an experience!

I had not done Snatra Puja for a long   time – so this was an opportunity to remind me about  our Tirthankar Bhagwan achieving liberation from life and death cycle (attains Moksha) and provides an inspiration as to what can be achieved.

Also did ShantiKalash Jal puja,   Chaitya Vandan (praying to the Tirthankars at the temple ), & performing Aarti .

As I understand –     Snatra Puja is a common Puja widely performed by most of the Deravasi Jain worshipers. It is also a starting Puja before any other main Puja.

Snatra Puja is a celebration of life of Tirthankar Bhagwan . This Puja recital explains the effect of Bhagawan”™s birth on the whole universe, narrates how glorious the occasion was and how much joys were shared by all the living souls including all heavenly souls.

Also did ShantiKalash Jal puja,   Chaitya Vandan (praying to the Tirthankars at the temple ), & performing Aarti .

Note:   ShantiKalash Jal puja   –   Water symbolizes life”™s ocean of birth, death and misery. This Jain puja reminds that one should live one’s life with honesty, truthfulness, love and compassion towards all living beings. This way one will be able to cross life”™s ocean and attain liberation (Moksha).

Lunch was provided in the hall. The volunteers and the care was outstanding. The lunch was very delicious – prepared with love.

We also had the privilege to listen to the Oshwal Center President Mr. Tushar Shah – who provided background about various   activities that the Community is currently engaged on.   Very vibrant and modern thinking .

All in all, our visits to the Oshwal Center provided a religious/spiritual and social contexts for our short visit to London, U.K.     It   provided the view as to how we as   a community are leapfrogging into the modern time and  yet keeping “volunteerism ” as a central mechanism for our advancement. Our Jain Religion which proclaimed “Non-Violence “as its central precept some 2500 year ago is becoming an engine for a viable peaceful existence in this world.

Friday 20 October 2017

This week is kind of celebrating Diwali   –   but we as a family are so stretched for one thing or another that we celebrated   Diwali in bits and pieces – both Sitara and Sachin took all that   in their strides and nana just going with the flow. Of course the family in Toronto is not here in Deep River area -so they are really not joining in this part of Diwali   -BUT we are all looking   for   real deep celebration

b) Oshwal Diwali Celebration in Toronto area on   Saturday 11 November 2017     – where Sunir/Shannonamd kids   (Maya, Kieran & Priya ) will   be going -and also joined by their Ba/Bapuji who will be travelling to Toronto from Deep River – to stay few days with them.

Tuesday 24 October 2017 – Nina was working and thus the kids were dropped by their dad to nana/nani home — and after breakfast and after some   relaxed time — nana/nani dropped   them at school

Note: This day their dad is going to Toronto on business – so Nina and kids will stay over in Deep River at nana/nani home   for at least two nights. It is more convenient -at least when Nina is working.

Saturday   28 October 2017

Today the Deep River and Area East Indians celebrated Diwali festival at Lions Hall in Chalk River. Both Sitara and Sachin dressed for   occasion – so did   their mom and dad . Their mom and dad helped in the organization of the event – while nana/nani enjoyed the program.   Both Sitara and Sachin took some part in the program – though they could do more.   Bears Den ( now owned by an Indian –  emigrated from Gujarat, India )  catered the food for the ocacsion.

This is the e-mail (with a photo) from Priya’s mom (today):

Another e-mail (with a photo) about Maya & Kieran having a ball of time on Halloween day :

” Thanks for the Halloween decorations! The kids loved putting them up. Here they are on Halloween night.”

Tuesday 07 November 2017

Visit to Toronto. We began our car journey ( 2016 Nissan Rogue) to visit the grandkids (Maya, Kieran & Priya) and their parents in Toronto . Left Deep River at about 9.30 am – stopped at Mackey en-route. Picked up lots of clothes for kids in Toronto. These are Sitara & Sachin cloths which they have outgrown – while Maya, Kieran & Priya are growing into.

Arrived safely in Toronto in good time about 4.30 pm. Shannon was not home but at work. Sincew e arrived early on time , Sunir could go pick up Maya (taking Priya) with him while Kieran stayed behind with Ba/Bapuji.

Wednesday 08 November 2017

Maya was dropped at school by Sunir – Shannon had already left for her work.

Kieran had not gone to his daycare. Kieran these days go only two days a week to his daycare – this is because Shannon is on “maternity leave ” and thus would like Kieran to be with parents and enjoy home life.

So today Sunir decided to take him to visit Mount Pleasant cemetery – for Kieran was curious about ghouls etc after enjoying recent Halloween . Ba/Bapuji also joined in for the visit. All went by subway – Priya in the stroller & Kieran walking all the way . We left at around 11.45 am & returned back by 2.00 pm – having had a snack on a bench in the cemetery.

It was a pleasant day. Kieran was looking at different tombstones and artifacts .

On Thursday 09 November 2017 – , both Kieran & Maya went to their respective school/daycare. I (Bapuji) went to the local library (on Yonge St.) after a brief walk around.

Friday – 10 November 2017 .

Both Ba and Bapuji went after dinner to kids’ maternal grandparents (Doug and Kathy) home

They were invited to visit and play social bridge. Shannon had gone for a conference at work -usually she does not work on Fridays. The conference was for two days -so Shannon was away on Saturday for most of the day . All three kids (Maya, Kieran and Priya) had opportunity to play with Ba and Bapuji – with theri dad being around too.

On Saturday 11 November 2017 – Sunir also took Maya and Kieran for their weekly swimming session while Priya remained with Ba/Bapuji.

Then on Saturday evening -all went to Oshwal Diwali function in Mississauga – Priya had a great time along with Maya and Kieran.

7) on Sunday, Doug/Kathy & Ryan (along with Cole) came for dinner at Sunir/Shannon home . Heather did not come as she was gone to another party. Ba’s (Jackie’s) birthday was celebrated with a take-out Thai dinner & a cake (ginger ) by Shannon. All sang ” Happy Birthday” to Ba.

Monday 13 November 2017 – a Kenya lady came to Sunir/Shannon home for cleaning job. Ba/Bapuji went out to the local library. Maya was at school and the other two kids (Kieran and Priya) went to a music class with their mom . this way people do not come in the way when cleaning of the house is being done.

Tuesday 14 November 2017

Ba/Bapuji returned back to Deep River – after spending a week with Maya. Kieran and Priya along with their parents

Wednesday 15 November 2017

This day Sachin had a demonstration in his class with other kids to participate in a play (children performing Little Red Robin) and playing a recorder. His nana/nani went to cheer him – between 4.00 till 5.15 pm. Also his dad (who had just returned from Toronto – from his business trip) was there. His mom could not come as she was working that day in Pembroke.

His teacher Miss McCarthy had sent a note to all parents to that . The whole weak till Friday the children did different play.

Sunday 19 November 2017

This evening Sitara, her mom and nana/nani went to Childs Auditorium , Mackenzie Community School (Deep River) to watch a “A Passage to Bollywood ” by a Dance Company from Mumbai, India . Sachin and Sunjay did not come and went home . It was classical Bollywood type dancing with a love theme.

Note : Sitara had hurt her knee this last couple of days – she is taking part in gymnastic presentation in the coming week -hopefully she recovers in time. Plus she now (as of Wednesday 22 November 2017) . has flu and recently she is going through some changes (re: her maturity as becoming a pre-teen) . So remains a bit downcast but I am sure she will spring back to her normal self soon.

Friday   01 December 2017
This day the Sitara and Sachin along with the parents came over to Deep River and stayed the night with their nana/nani – this is because on Saturday Sachin was to participate in the ice Hockey match first with the Petawawa novice team (early in the morning at 8.00 am) and then with Pembroke team at 12.00 noon.   Also Sitara had her gymnastic session in Petawawa at 11.00 am. So staying in Deep River saves time and generates travel convenience – besides giving Grandparents a fabulous time with the family.
So on Saturday, all (including Sitara) went to the Deep River arena just before 8.00 am to cheer Sachin in his play against the Petawawa team – though they lost big time.   At 12.00 noon game , his mom and Sitara were not there as Sitara was driven to her Gymnastic session (in Petawawa) by her mom but Sachin’s dad and nana/nani were there. However in that match against Pembroke the Deep River team lost big time . Sachin enthusiasm for playing hockey was   evident and he was relaxed and happy to get an opportunity to play.
On Saturday, then all went to Deep River downtown around 5.15 pm to watch the Santa parade – in which Sachin and his dad were in one float   (by the Mt. Martin Ski patrol team) . The parade startted at 5,30 pm sharp beginning from the old A & P store location and went around the Deep River Town Hall before returning to the start point.

Sunday 03 December 2017
This day Sitara was participating in XPERIENCE GYMNASTIC AND UVGC program held at Fellows School in Pembroke – which presented gymnastics   with various category of gymnasts trainees as   part of   a play called   ” Once upon a fairy tale “.   Sitara was in the fifth part of the play ( called   – In the dwarfs’ cottage) and she amongst others (of her colleagues) posed as a cleaner and with that they   demonstrated their gymnastic skills .       Nana/nani attended the event along with the whole Mistry family.
Monday 04 December 2017
Sachin is participating in the area wise junior ice hockey tournaments – and with that program had been playing matches with Petawawa, Pembroke and Barrys Bay teams. This day they had gone to Barrys Bay – drivenby his dad (of course missing school ) . Their team won the match 3 to 0 . Earlier matches with Petawawa and Pembroke (played at Deep River Arena) during the weekend did not get any win .
Saturday 09 December 2017
Both Sitara and Sachin came over to nana/nani home for a sleep-over. In   fact the whole Mistry family to spend the night at nana/nani place in Deep River -as the parents were going to a party in Deep River. So the kids were to spend time with nana/nani. Nani took Sitara for her figure skating at the Deep River Arena – while nana played with Sachin (after watching a Pokomen movie ) -catch ball and soft ball soccer in the living room.
Also an e-mail from Toronto   – Priya’s dad sent a message   with a title   – We have a walker – :
” Priya just got the hang of walking over the past day or so. Be prepared when we come for Christmas. She is a rascal! ”

After that we   talked on the phone with her dad and a bit with Maya .     Kieran was away from home with his mom – to have gone for shopping getting ready for Christmas.

Sunday 10 December 2017

This day kids (Sitara and Sachin) helped in decorating the artificial Christmas Tree – that nana/nani had put up on Friday (08 December 2017) in the Deep River home living room.   The Tree is lighted with a nice star ( separately lighted) on the top. This   year the Tree is a smaller one – not used the bottom part that belongs to the whole Tree.

This Sunday was exciting one on another count. Nina worked hard and prepared and then   gave a training session to a group in the J.L. Gray building on the subject of – How to use “naloxone kits”.
This was is a   part of Deep River Ski patrol team initiative.

Note:

” This is a opiod overdose kit .   Naloxone blocks or reverses the effects of opioid medication, including extreme drowsiness, slowed breathing, or loss of consciousness. An opioid is sometimes called a narcotic.”

Also this day Sunjay was participating in the training of   – the techniques of CPR ”“ cardiopulmonary resuscitation and this day he had his second test. The third and final will be next week (Tuesday). This is also   a   part of Deep River Ski patrol team initiative.

Tuesday 12 December 2017
Mall building sold to Tushar/Ragini effective   08 December 2017. Sunjay completed his final test for CPR training. Sailed through.
Thursday   14 December 2017
Celebrated   Nina’s birthday at nana/nani home   – simple family affair .   Friday 0n 15 December 2017   , Sunjay went to Calabogie (near Pembroke)     for downhill ski instructor training

These past few days -from Friday evening to Sunday , kids’ dad have been occupied – Sunjay going to Calabogie (near Pembroke)   for downhill ski instructor training .     So kids are with Nina – going places and shopping in Pembroke   etc as well continue with their extra-curricular activities .
The following was posted by Nina on her Facebook Wall – with photos – to-day:
” She (that is Sitara ) would NOT go anywhere near Santa no matter how much he chatted her up so he came to her. And then we had to work hard to get a smile   out of her. It’s just like when she was 1! He (that is Sachin) chatted Santa up got almost 10 min as there was no one else in line     ”
Note: Since last few months Sitara has become more reserved and shy. Hopefully she will regain her mojo and smile often soon.

Our Recent Visit to the U.K. – August/September 2017

Our visit to the U.K. – from   Tuesday 22 August to Tuesday 19 September 2017

Our recent visit to United Kingdom turned out to be overwhelmingly successful   – in terms of the wide ranging experience and uplift that I (and of course my wife) received – while interacting with many of our family members and friends – visiting from Kenya and those residing within the U.K.

Here is the write-up   – a bit long one but it provides lot of information- for future reference :

Our recent visit to United Kingdom turned out to be overwhelmingly successful   – in terms of the wide ranging experience and uplift that I (and of course my wife) received – while interacting with many of our family members and friends – visiting from Kenya and those residing within the U.K.

In short, I can describe it as heavenly – as it uplifted our emotional vibes from meeting our family members and friends.

Background

The primary reason visiting U.K was to attend Mohanlal’s granddaughter Anisha’s ( daughter of Mayur/Bhavni) wedding in London but arising from that event – my wife and I were to rekindle our memories of family ties with many of my wife’s relations. This view was fortified by the fact that my eldest brother (Kanti) was also visiting from Kenya at the   time to spend time with his two sons (Shammir & Nehul) & their families.   This would again afford further chance to revisit our fond memories  with many of my side of relations. Further, this provided the argument that   (having) my brother visiting U.K. will afford us a lifetime opportunity to pose for a family photo of those   of my siblings & their spouses (currently alive ) and  who are presently in U.K.   Of course we missed my sister Sarla & her husband (Satish) who remain in Kenya.

Note: Last we visited U.K and Kenya was some 10 years ago – to attend the wedding in Kenya of Mohanlal’s granddaughter Aarti (daughter of Anju/Naina in Nairobi). So there was a gap of 10 years -when we remained only sporadically connected with our near and dear ones.

So eventually  with some gentle plodding by our daughter (Nina) and   son-in-law (Sunjay) , we decided to take the trip.   So last minutes tickets were booked and the trip began safely -with Sunjay taking time from his work and drove us to the Ottawa international Airport and  Hasu , my cousin (my maternal uncle’s son ) came over & picked us from the Heathrow Airport on arrival.

Thank you Hasu and Dhanak for a warm welcome to London.  Your warmth, chatter and late night tea along with Atul’s energy and his recommended   Chinese Dried Plums   will be remembered at all times.

There were some specific events and experiences that we went through  when visiting the U.K this time. We avoided any tourist traps and remained focused to spend time   with our family members and friends.

So now I will narrate some of these events :

These are:

Event 1   – Remembering my AmuMama – whom we recently lost

Event 2   – Anisha weds Rikin

Event 3   – Meeting some of my colleagues from the Royal College, Nairobi

Event 4   – SamvatsarÄ«   Lunch at the Oshwal Center

Event 5  – Attending ” Saadadi ” – a condolence meeting at Oshwal Ekta Center

Event 6   – Celebrating 80th Birthday of my eldest brother

Event 7   – Ajul’s dream girl (Daksha) – and announcement of impending engagement

Event 8   – Our itinerary of stay in U.K – as it unfolded

Event 9   – Departure ( adios) – Michhami Dukkadam to all

Event 1

We spent the first few days – after our arrival in London for remembering and expressing our sorrow for recent loss of my loving maternal uncle AmuMama   ( who passed away not too long ago in Kenya) with his son (Nilesh & family ) for loss of his father, with  Hasu, his brother Atul , his brother Jitesh and families for loss of their uncle ( AmuKaka  – who is their paternal uncle),  my ShantiMama & family – for loss of a   brother and with my ChampaMami for loss of her brother-in-law.

Subsequently , we mourned my uncle’s death with my RamnikMama & family – for loss of his brother and Darshi ( who had just come over from Nairobi,Kenya) – who is my AmuMama’s granddaughter and was with him till last minute.

My take on my AmuMama –  (note :  for my poem from the heart refer to my blog  – referred below).

Link:   http://pravinshah.org/wp-admin/post.php?post=1025&action=edit&message=1

My AmuMama   passed away on 12 July 2017 in Nairobi, Kenya.   AmuMama was  born in Kenya, lived his whole life in Kenya. AmuMama had been a pillar to me – when I was 16 years old and completed my Senior Cambridge in Mombasa – he helped me with moral and financial support so I could start on my journey to become a professional engineer . I graduated from the Royal College, Nairobi ( second batch of the newly opened college   -with Mahatma Gandhi statue- funds contributed by the Indian Community of East Africa) in 1962 as a Civil Engineer with professional qualification from the Institution of Civil Engineers of London. I stayed with the joint household   of  my AmuMama & GunvantMama on Duke Street in Nairobi – and then walking from there to the Royal College precinct.   During third year, I moved to the Hostel attached to the Royal College. After my graduation   and my work career , my AmuMama remained my best friend and support in  case of any need – like transportation etc. Well he was such a helpful person for anyone who needed his help   – with cheerful smile and witty conversation on his lips.

We – I   will miss you a lot but then you are always in my heart.

The London trip helped me to share my sorrow and thus overcome my grief for my beloved AmuMama and accept the reality of loss.

Event 2

The Anisha wedding was fabulous with so many events to attend. We met with Anisha and all family members prior to actual wedding day – and also the groom (Rikin ) – on Mehndi day.

The three days we spent with various events/gatherings – led us to meet most relatives from Jackie’s side but also others who were friends and/or related to Mohanlal and family.   Most of us celebrated each event with complete attention, fun and serious understanding of what was being done/celebrated.

The food was fabulous. Jackie being on a non-dairy diet- was catered accordingly.

From the young ones of Mohanlal’s family we met:

Niraj/Nili                               (   parents – Anju/Naina )

Neel/Rachna                 (   parents – Jinit/Mina )

Vikesh/Heenal           ( parents – Jinit/Mina )

Arjun                                             ( parents – Mayur/Bhavni)

Of course — Anisha & her to be husband Rikin           ( parents – Mayur/Bhavni)

The current Anisha wedding –   was leading us at times on a journey through memory lane – reminding us of the earlier wedding we attended in Nairobi (travelling from Canada to attend the wedding) some 10 years ago for Mohanlal’s other granddaughter   (Arti ) – when Jackie and me had opportunity to reconnect with her relatives in Kenya at that time after a long time away in Canada.

This time all young ones (in Mohanlal’s family) have grown up, most married and all being so polite and welcoming.

Of course at that time (10 years ago) Anoop ( Jackie’s nephew – her brother Jayantilal’s son) was alive.  Anoop is still very much in our thoughts.

During this wedding , Anoop’s sister Minal and her husband Sachin had come along from Kenya with Minal’s mom Manjubhabhi.  We were so taken by Minal’s loving smile and her simple but caring attention to her JackieAuntie.

During this wedding, we were pleased to meet and join in the celebration with Jackie’s other brother   Sobhag and his wife Hansabhabhi -who had travelled from Kenya to attend the wedding. Their daughter Anjali had also flown in from the USA to attend the wedding.

This afforded the opportunity to be around   the near and dear ones (even for a short time) – as we are aging this meeting becomes all the more important for reliving our past.

The actual wedding was performed at the Ditton Park Manor – the bridegroom   party to be arriving at 8.30 am in the morning of Monday 28 August 2017.   So to enable us an easy and relaxed experience -we had decided to stay two (2) nights in a nearby hotel (Heathrow/Windsor Marriott Hotel , Langley, Slough) – Sunday night and Monday night.

The wedding bridegroom party arrived at around 9.00 am and thereafter bridegroom having been welcomed ceremoniously by the bride’s mother – the wedding started (   within a professional lawn marquee   ) at about 10.00 am (after breakfast) . The presiding priest was Kamal Pandey –   a young, affable   and bi-lingual priest for the occasion.   The ceremony was kind of Jain themed.   There was pin-dropped silence during the ceremony.

————————————————————————————————————————————–

Ditton Park Manor

Just 20 minutes from London is a truly exclusive location, where time appears to stand still within an atmosphere of enchantment.

Ditton Manor has over a century of charm but with all the modern amenities to host wedding parties from 120 seated in the Great Hall or up to a 1000 guests within a professional lawn marquee.

Ditton Park belonged to the crown in the reign of Queen Elizabeth 1. It then eventually passed to Ralph Montagu , 1st Duke of Montagu, through marriage. The present house which may have been first built around 1500 was badly damaged by fire in 1812.

Nearby, on the Great West Road,   a public house known as the Montague [sic] Arms stands, now owned and operated as a Harvester restaurant. The pub dates back to the early 19th century.

Link:   https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ditton_Park

Note: Jackie and I had dinner on Sunday (27 August 2017) night and breakfast on Tuesday morning at the said  Harvester restaurant.  So friendly and homely – the waitress spent time and found a carton of Soya Milk for Jackie’s non-dairy diet along with other menu items.

——————————————————————————————————————————————

After wedding was over – all were treated to a fabulous vegetarian lunch and then some of us went to their accommodation at the Marriot hotel for rest till 5.00 pm – and then embarked on the bus (special for transporting guests from the Ditton Park Manor to the Hotel and back) and arrived back at the Ditton Park Manor at about 5.30 pm ( start of the Reception   time) . We all gathered on the grounds and had refreshment/drinks and took photos etc.

At one point, looking at the Manor – which looks like a palace (albeit all simple and without much decoration)   – where I saw a balcony and uttered to others as to ” When is the Prince or Queen coming to   wave at us? ”   It was in the spirit of making a lighter conversation in the ambience of sitting under a balcony of a palace .

Well, it happened   – both Rikin and Anisha ( assuming the role of prince & queen for the   moment – as they were the groom & bride ) appeared on the balcony and waved to us – sitting or standing under the balcony. So the statement uttered came to be true – for us.

How times have changed?    It was not long ago when Winston Churchill spewed venom at India (and Indians) – calling Mahatma Gandhi posing as a fakir and   his imperial bent   was supported by many British citizens and leaders.  Now Indians can rent a manor (previously owned by a British Duke) and perform wedding ceremonies with Jain/Hindu slokas with all the freedom and rights.   So Britain has changed – and we have advanced educationally and economically plus politically. That is the effect of democracy in Britain.

After reception dinner   – there was dance on the floor – the first dance led by Rikin and Anisha.   Jackie and I joined in the fun and danced a couple of numbers – before we left for the hotel at about 11.00 pm.

Event 3

The meeting with some of my old college colleagues ( from way back ) had come out of the blue.

Note:   I did my Civil Engineering education at Royal Technical College (RTC) , Nairobi finishing in June 1962.   The RTC was established in 1956.   I was in the second batch(at the new College) starting my college time in September 1957.   Depending on when you attended the college, it may have been called Royal Technical College , Royal College Nairobi, or University College Nairobi. It wasn”™t until 1970 that the college was transformed into the University of Nairobi.

It so transpired that we were warmly welcomed by Bhaskar/Vidula Patel to spend some time with them -while visiting U.K. this time.   Both Bhaskar & Vidula are ex-Royal College students – whom we had met earlier.   We   decided to spend a few days with them immediately after Anisha’s wedding . So Bhaskar & Vidula picked us up at   noon time on Tuesday 29 August 2017 from the Marriot Hotel.   Well, they were working enthusiastically to organize a gathering of a few Royal College ex-students (who are currently residing in London) for a dinner party to welcome Jackie & me in their midst.

The dinner party came about on the same day – that is on Tuesday 29 August 2017. Lo Behold! the gathering was planned to be at the famous and historic Indian Gymkhana Club in London. We were so spell-bound with all the happenings – first meeting with some of the old College colleagues and that at the Indian Gymkhana Club.

Note:   Indian Gymkhana Club is a combined Cricket, Football and Hockey Club and was established in 1916. It is   the largest and longest-standing multiracial Sports Club in the United Kingdom. The club is celebrating 100 years of existence this year. However, the current site was opened on 15-acre site in Osterley, West London in 1922 –   thanks to donations from some of the most illustrious families in India, including the maharajas of Patiala, Kapurthala, Jhalawar and Cooch Behar.

Link:   https://www.theguardian.com/cricket-has-no-boundaries/2017/may/25/its-a-special-place-the-101-year-history-of-the-indian-gymkhana-cricket-club

There were some 6 couples (besides us) who attended the dinner gathering – all very charming and bubbly in welcoming us.

Following colleagues and wives attended the dinner.

1) Bhaskar Patel   &   his wife Vidula – who organized the dinner party & with whom Jackie and I had gone to the dinner party.

2) Mansukh Shah & his wife Lata

3) Pyarali Mannani & Nasim

4) Edgar d’Sa

5) Himat Talsania & Kanta

6) Chhagan Mistry (Architect) & his wife Nalini

Note : Mansukh and I were classmates in High School in Mombasa & then at Royal College in Nairobi. The others who came to welcome me were students at Royal College – possibly a couple of years junior to me (and Mansukh) but I had met a couple of them at a RTC gathering   in Toronto   in the year 2001.

My wife and I were floored by the warm time we spent together -remembering and reminiscing about old college days and also remembering others who were not at the table at this time.      Fabulous.

One incident that we remembered & jolted me and my memory was about — a rag day parade in 1961   – during which an accident happened and we lost one of our colleague students (Chhaya) who got caught under the wheel of a parade truck.    Also another incident   -shortly after our graduation , one of our colleagues ( Fonseca) had joined with the Royal Air force in U.K. – and during training had an accident and plane crashed and we lost him.   This memory was a bit of shocker – buried , at least , in my conscience for a long time. Now it has surfaced and the sad memory does hurt – even after so many years.

I was pleased to see Mansukh Shah and his wife, Latta who had come to the gathering to welcome us. They were introduced to Jackie and I am sure they had pleasant conversations.

Mansukh   and I have been together while growing up in Mombasa, Kenya – we were together in the high school (Technical High School) Mombasa — in the same class- and   there after again at the Royal College in Nairobi – again in the same class for Civil Engineering qualification. We completed our education at the same time – graduating as Civil Engineers.   After college, we separated out   to   different career routes – leading him to be in U.K. and I am in Canada.   So meeting him after so many years was a very pleasant happening – though now both are retired as professional Civil Engineers.

I got the opportunity during dinner to have a chat/conversation  with Chhagan Mistry. He is an architect by profession.   Nice chat with Chhagan   – it transpired that he was instrumental in bringing to the notice of Oshwal Shahs Community in London about a huge property at Potters Bar, which was available for purchase. The long and short of that is —  the Oshwal Shahs own that property and now we have Oshwal Center there.  Also he helped in the design & details for the   Jain Temple on the property.

A bit of history for my record from my conversation with Chhagan.

One item that kind of spilled over during the conversation is about the visible success in their career and generally in life of many of the early years graduates from the RTC   – even when they are scattered across many countries (such as East Africa , U.K., Canada, Australia and USA).   The technical acumen and leadership exercised by most   is astounding   and is a tribute to the values instilled and foresight of our fathers and grandfathers during our upbringing under difficult colonial times.

A note about our stay with Bhaskar and Vidula

We feel that we are fortunate to enjoy the warm hospitality that Bhaskar and Vidula bestowed on us during our stay with them and which kind of transitioned us subsequently to a smooth stay in London.

After Bhaskar & Vidula picked us up at noon time on Tuesday 29 August 2017 from the Marriot Hotel , we went to their home in Ruislip.

Both Jackie and I were immediately awed by collection of their various fabulous artifacts in their home.   The most attention grabbing and those inspiring reverence were   two     – i)   a   ” stained glass”   Ganeshji  (crafted by one of their contacts) and   ii)   an intricate photo of ShreeNathji studded with various semi-precious stones. These two ignited in my heart my prayer mode  – a sort of doing a religious pilgrimage visit.

We spent  Wednesday shopping – went with Bhaskar for woolen sweaters (made in UK)  – bought two sweaters – Pringle brand (made in Scotland) and also I needed two special AAAA batteries for my hearing-aid remote. These we could not get from the shops.

Well, Bhaskar/Vidula   were kind & took (drove) us to Rugby on Thursday 31 August 2017 – where we wanted to make a visit to meet with our son-in-law Sunjay’s mom Hasuben .  It was a beautiful day and we had experience of M1 highway and we arrived at Rugby at noon time – we had a good visit and after lunch and socializing for a while we returned back   to Bhaskar/Vidula’s home by the evening.  After dinner we spent time chatting and also looking/savouring at Bhaskar’s album of RTC memories & photos from yonder years.

Vidula is an expert cook and enjoyed her meals . I still remember her home made pickle –   ” Chhundo ” (mango pickle) – exceptional texture and test and accompaniment to any   main dish.   Thanks Vidula.

Event 4

It   was the Paryushana festival  time  when we visited the U.K.  SamvatsarÄ«  (Forgiveness Day) is the last day of Paryushana festival observed by the followers of Jain religion. On this day, Jains ask for the forgiveness for their mistakes committed knowingly or unknowingly from the fellow beings.

It so happened that we were in London during Jain Paryushana festival  and thus we were fortunate to partake in this year’s Samvatsari  Lunch organized by the Oshwal Association of the U.K. on Sunday   03 September 2017 at the Oshwal Center, Potters Bar, Hertfordshire.

This afforded us the opportunity not only to partake in the Lunch – but also to visit the famous Oshwal Center of London and also the Jain Temple located there.  Besides we were to get to meet many of our relatives and friends whom we would not have time otherwise to visit individually.

At that time we were guests and staying with my sister Ranjan and her husband Mahendra in Edgware. So we went with them – driven by Mahendra – to Oshwal Center arriving there by 11.00 am.   Also their daughter Bini was with us.

As we had time before lunch – we went over to the Temple – made our prayers and then went on the grounds to enjoy the garden and many different well carved   ” stambhs – pillars “.

Each tree is planted on its own separated from each other by a few feet and each tree is surrounded by a concrete round platform   ( ” Otlo “- a Gujarati term )  depicting the name of a village and donors who have contributed funds towards planting that particular tree & platform.

The   organization was superb, the enthusiasm and caring attitude of the volunteers was exemplary and worth to be proud of. The crowd was well behaved and remained in queue where so needed. We   stood in the queue and there we met   Jigna ( Mahendra/Ranjan’s eldest daughter ), her husband Richard and their kids – Ishan & Rishi. We also met Priyal (my nephew   Sunay’s wife) and her two kids – Ayla & her brother Ridai.   Further we met others too while in the queue – I remember meeting my niece Rina also.

After lunch, we came out to the grounds – from exit side – and there we had some time to mill around meeting some old acquaintances   (I met a couple of brothers (Ashok & Suryakant) who were   our neighbours in Mombasa -Station Road when I was in primary school). And also meeting some of our relatives ( in fact we met most of Jackie’s cousins & wives ).

We spent some time at the Main Building halls – where the ” physically challenged ” were served lunch . The love and care shown by the volunteer servers to each and every guest was exceptionally heart-warming.

So we ended our visit to the Oshwal Center by 3.30 pm and returning back we decided to visit Jackie’s cousin brother Laljibhai ( who lives with his son Harshit & Alpa ). Laljibhai has medical problems and need constant care.

My admiration and many thanks to all the volunteers who made the day very comfortable.

Event 5

Saadadi – Condolence Meeting . ” Saadadi ” style condolence meeting , I believe , is unique to our Community – having originated in Nairobi, Kenya. ” Saadadi ” is   organized at a Community Hall   within few days immediately after death of an individual     – by the close relatives of the deceased.

On Sunday 03 September 2017 (the day we went for Samvantari Lunch)    – after visiting Laljibhai (Jackie’s cousin brother) at his son’s home – we came to Ranjan/Mahendra home and had dinner and some rest.

After that we went to   a ” Saadadi ” – a condolence meeting held at the Oshwal Ekta Center for Hansaben. We went with Mahendra/Ranjan.  Hansaben had passed away a few days back. She is sister of my JayaKaki ( wife of my RashikUncle or Bachukaka – as we used to call him) plus she is also related to Mahendra from her husband side.

At the Condolence meeting – all (those coming to condole) get into a queue ( can be a long line) which slowly threads towards a line of mourners (from Hansaben’s family members – in this case) – either standing or sitting down – and as we get to the line – each one in line get to offer his or her either silent condolence message or expressing few words to that effect and then move on to the next mourner – until all are touched (metaphorically speaking) and offered condolence message – The purpose being that – in a way to make a gesture that lets the family know you”™re thinking of them and share their sorrow. Your choice of words is important and to avoid any inappropriate word.

This meeting has a set time – so we arrived within the allotted time and once the line move on – it takes only about 1/2 hour to complete the process.

This meeting allows opportunity to meet others -who would have come to condole – either before joining the line or after the process is complete.

As we were recent visitors to London   – many people came over and said Hi and had a bit of a chat – remembering our past. One of the guys I met was Mansukh Kanji -who was my neighbourhood friend when I was in primary/secondary school in Mombasa – living on Station Road -near our Visa Oshwal Community Place –   that is now 60 -65 years ago. That was very nice.     We also met Mansukh and his wife – Indu (Manjubhabhi’s brother & wife) as well as met Mahendra & wife (Virparfuva’s eldest son – the other sons &wives we met at Oshwal Center on Samvatsari lunch day).

After that we went over to Anuj’s parents home ( Anuj is Bini’s husband). Also Anuj was home – as he had returned back from his visit to Belgium.

Oshwal Ekta Center is the Oshwal Community center in Edgware, England – not very far from Ranjan/Mahendra home. Nice hall and they ( the Organizing Committee ) have plans for more renovations in the days to come. Only problem with this location is lack of parking – not like Oshwal Centre at Potters Bar where parking is ample.

Event 6

This visit to London was to achieve few objectives .   One of these was to spend time with my eldest brother, Kanti (turning 80 and visiting from Kenya for a few days) – as much as is feasible during our visit.

It so happened that he turned 80 – the day we landed at Heathrow Airport arriving from Canada – Wednesday 23 August 2017. Though talking with him on the phone after we landed in London – we got opportunity to   meet him only after a few days.   That was the day   when his sons (Shammir & Nehul) had organized a surprise birthday party for him. He did not know about it and his son Shammir and family were overseas (visiting California , USA for holidays) – when we arrived in London. We were approached by Nehul for the party – the invitation and the date   – at 6.00 pm Saturday 26 August 2017 and it to be at Shammir’s   place – as he would be back from USA by then.

Saturday was a busy day for us – as we were to be at Mayur’s place (Northwood) in the afternoon to participate in Anisha’s  Mehndi event. We had to excuse ourselves around 8.30 pm from the festivities and leave Mayur’s place to get to the party.  Note: There was a dance after dinner but we missed all that as we could not remain late and miss my brother’s birthday party.

It was important to be at the birthday party on two counts   1) It was my brother’s 80th birthday party and thus I would not want to miss it and 2) this is the only chance we will get to meet the whole side of my family together –   which would then allow a photo shoot of our siblings and their spouses – who are in U.K.   So we arrived at Shammir’s place at about 9.00 pm – a bit late for the party but we were in time for the cake cutting and subsequent photo of all my brothers, sisters and their spouses   together. I must mention here that we could not have in the photo —   my brother Arwind, my Kanchanbhabhi   (Kanti’s wife) – as both of them have passed away some years ago. Also my sister Sarla and her husband Satish could not be in the photo shoot – as they were in Nairobi, Kenya.

It was terrific that we managed to get to the party- however late and missing some items at Mayur’s place – as besides my siblings /spouses   we also met almost all of our nephews and nieces and spouses   and most of the grandkids.   Note: My sister Daksha and her husband had come all the way from Northampton and their three sons ( Ajul, Krupesh and Dinit) have also joined in – them being in London.

The party turned out to be exciting – having some cool moments to reminisce our family fraternity and getting fun looking at each other and sharing happy moments. At the end of the party around mid-night, my brother Suryakant dropped us at Hasu’s place where we were staying.

Event 7

Ajul decides to propose to his girlfriend (Daksha). This event was kind of a surprise  (especially during our visit to England ) – not thought of even in our dreams.

Ajul is my sister Daksha (Dipak)’s eldest son – whom we had met earlier at my brother Kanti’s 80th birthday party.   Fine young man.

So we had gone over to Northampton to spend a weekend with Daksha and Dipak.

We went to Northampton to Daksha/Dipak home on Friday 08 September 2017 with  Mahendra/Ranjan   and my brother Kanti.  Mahenda drove us all in his car.

That evening, Ajul had also come over (by train from London) along with his girlfriend (also named Daksha) to be with his parents in Northampton and also spend some time with us too – besides they arranged it in such a way so his girlfriend Daksha was introduced to all us on Friday   – as Ranjan (his Masi), Mahendra (his   Masa) and Kanti (his Mama) and myself & Jackie (his Mama/Mami) were all there. A sort of breaking a story /news of impending engagement.

However, Mahendra, Ranjan and Kanti returned to London on Friday night leaving Northampton at about mid-night – and Jackie and I remaining to spend the weekend there.

After spending the day together – going to John Lewis Mall at Milton Keynes and to a Buddhist Pagoda around that area – we returned back to London on Sunday 10 September 2017   in the evening – driven by Dipak in their minivan . We were to stay with Suryakant/Jasu in London that night but we had   a detour to my nephew Nimish’s home .  So Ajul introduced his girlfriend Daksha to his KumudMami and to Nimish and Prasita . After that Dipak drove us to Suryakant/Jasu home and there again introductions were made and after that late at night they left.

So it happened fast after that – Daksha’s parents flew over from Dehradun (India) on Friday                                                            (15 September 2017) next and spent their Saturday in Northampton and ” the die was cast “. So unofficially Ajul and Daksha were engaged – a formal ceremonial proposal was made by Ajul to Daksha later.

So on Saturday (15 September 2017) evening   –   Daksha/Dipek , Ajul and his girl friend Daksha & her parents come over to London at Shammir’s home – where we had gathered for dinner and introductions were made   and relations were established.  Also Krupesh (Ajul’s brother) came over after a while to join in the   bonhomie.

To top it up – sweets from Dehradun (India) were distributed for celebrating the occasion.   After a short time together – Daksha/Dipek , Ajul and his girl friend Daksha & her parents and Krupesh left – and thereafter we  went to the dining table for our dinner.   At the dining table – we were – Jackie, myself, Kanti, Suryakant & Jasu, Kumudbhabhi , Rina’s mom , Shammir & Rina – 9 in total.   Both grandkids (Ruan & Syan) had their dinner earlier.

e) Stayed with Suryakant/Jasu (my brother & his wife) from Tuesday 05 September to   Friday   08 September 2017

also during that time   :

– had dinner at Blue Ginger Restaurant with Harkhu/Nimu, Mansukh/Lekha & Laxmikant/Mukta on Wednesday 06 September 2017.   –  A   good time spent with friends .

Harkhu is my old time friend from Kenya. Mansukh is my school and college friend. Laxmikant is Jackie’s relation and friend.

– had lunch at Mansukh /Sobhna (Jackie’s cousin brother & wife ) home   on Thursday 07 September 2017 – there were also (also Sheetal and his wife were at the lunch) , ManuBhabhi, ManjuBhabhi, Pravin/Champu, Manjubhabhi’s brother Mansukhbhai and his wife Indu were also invited. Also Sushi/ Rajni were there too. Pravin/Champu’s daughter (Shaily)   also came over.

– Went over for a visit to Rina/Minesh home on Thursday 07 September 2017  evening . Met Minesh’s parents ( Vijayaben and Venichandbhai (Vinubhai . Also met their daughter   Ruhi . Their other daughter, Kria,  had gone to sleep at that time.

Rina – trying to be vegan – knew about Soya Yogurt , Soya Ice Cream . Also had tea which was Caffeine free – a product of South Africa ( known as Tick-Tock tea)

Note:   Tick Tock”˜s deep colour and full taste make a delicious cup of tea, and it”™s well known for its health properties too. Gentle, soothing, naturally caffeine free and low in tannin, Tick Tock Rooibos Tea can be enjoyed at any time, even at bed time.

Tick Tock Rooibos tea is still  harvested by hand and cured in the traditional way The process takes place in the crisp  air of the Cedarberg Mountains of South Africa’s Cape. It  requires great skill to know when the cure is at its peak;  one sign is that it begins to give off a delicious sweet aroma that attracts wild bees.

f)   Stayed with  Daksha/ Dipak (my sister and her husband) in Northampton between Friday 08 September to Sunday 10 September 2017 . Driven there  by Mahendra/Ranjan .  My brother Kanti also joined us.

See above Event 7  ( Ajul’s dream girl -Daksha) write-up – for some details.

also during that time on Saturday :

– Daksha /Dipek took us to meet Champa/Harkhu in Northampton . Champa had worked for TESCO for 21 years until her injuries – when she retired.   She has 3 girls – all grown up . One – Kalpa – is married ( to a local guy – they have two kids – a boy and a girl – both toddlers) The two others ( Bina & Rina) are not married and live nearby -and together.

– and in subsequently in the afternoon we   went to Leicester – a sort of pilgrimage – to go to Shree Jalaram Temple for worship. Nice temple – with an idol of Shree Jalaram with an idol of Shree Ram behind.   After the worship at Shree Jalaram Temple   – we went to the Jain Temple ( which is known to be the oldest in the Western world). After worship – we waited till 7.00 pm for aarti – met Rajni Mehta & his wife ( who seem to be one of the leaders at the Temple).

The Aarti started at 7.00 pm – and we were encouraged to take & lead the Aarti – which we did.   There were 3 Aarti ( one for Digambar, one for Swetamber and last for Rajchandraji.   After Aarti — there was sing song ( stavan) led by a good singer.

We left the JainTemple at about 9.00 pm and then went for dinner at Indigo Restaurant serving Indian cuisine.   Arrived back to Northampton at about mid-night . Over tea, had a long good “shooting the breeze type” conversation with Dipak past midnight.

On Sunday , we all went   to John Lewis Center- Milton Keynes .   At the mall, Daksha concentrated to find any Chinese Shop – for she knew I was looking for Chinese Dried Plums                   ( believed to be good for digestion – for constipation relief – as recommended by Atul & already tried by me at the start of the journey to UK).   Well, we found it – not exactly at the John Lewis mall but at the adjoining Food Mall . We managed to buy few packets of these Dried Plums. Note : By the way – over the coming week Daksha tried these Dried Plums and she did report a good result – for her constipation problem.

After the mall visit – on the way back to Northampton   – we took a detour to a Buddhist Pagoda (Peace Pagoda) & Temple in the vicinity – at Willen Lake Milton Keynes.   We had to climb steps to go over to the Peace Pagoda – and walked over the top of the hill towards the Temple but wind and adverse weather made it difficult to go over to the Temple – had my hat had blown over and had to be retrieved with some concern. However, we did get to the Tree where worshipper place their written prayers . At that place there was a stone cairn with write-up and a fixed on the cairn was a small   golden Ganesha statue.   I am surprised to see a Ganesha image at a Buddhist shrine.

Note: Ganesha also appears in Buddhism, not only in the form of the Buddhist god Vināyaka, but also portrayed as a Hindu deity form also called Vināyaka. His image may be found on Buddhist sculptures of the late Gupta period.

See Link: https://www.buddhagroove.com/what-is-significance-of-ganesha-in-buddhism/

After the visit to the Peace Pagoda , we rushed back to Northampton as Jigna/Richard and their toddlers ( Ishan & Rishi) were visiting Daksha’s family for an hour or so. They arrived about the same time we reached Daksha’s home. Had a great time playing with Rishi – a very adorable   ~ 1   1/2 yr old boy. All had dinner refreshment   together – and after Jigna family left –   we kind of relaxed a bit before leaving Northampton for London.

We were to spend night at Suryakant/Jasu place .   Dipak  drove – all six of us again in their van.   On the way to Suryakant’s home – Daxa made   a diversion to go to Nimish’s   home   ( this was an opportunity to introduce Daksha Jr  to Nimish family and to Kumudbhabhi ) .

When we arrived at Suryakant’s home ( about 9.30 pm) – surprise!   Darshi and Nilesh ( Nilesh is Darshi’s Mama -mom’s brother) were there visiting.  Darshi is granddaughter of my AmuMama ( Ela’s daughter) -who has recently arrived to UK to visit ( in fact she was to attend a conference but that   got cancelled last minute) . Darshi is a Pharmacist by profession.   My AmuMama passed away recently in Kenya ( just before we travelled to UK) and thus meeting Darshi was a God-sent opportunity.   An opportunity to grieve within family.

g) Stayed one night with Suryakant/Jasu on Sunday 10 September   2017 and then

h) on   Monday 11 September 2017 went to Sushi/Rajni home for a night .   Met their son Deep ( who is physically challenged, gone through hardship while growing up but   managed himself , did get an education and works with Tax Department   since last many years. He did work with Hasu   (my cousin) when Hasu was with the Tax Department. Hasu is now retired after 41 years of service. Deep lives independently in his own apartment – which he   shares with a roomie ( a local person).

Note: Sushi/Rajni came over in the morning to pick us up from Suryakant’s home

On Tuesday   12 September 2017 – in the morning – before lunch , Sushi/Rajni took us over to the neighbourhood park for a walk . All the amenities for children playground BUT also a an adult physio corner were there. Nice weather and walk.

Manu Haria & his wife Shobhna came over to visit.   Shobhna brought an Indian dress (maroon) for Sitara   and a bag of Sooji flour ( for making shiro) . We declined the Sooji flour on account of being heavy to carry.

Sushi/Rajni (along with Deep) took us to visit Harshit/Alpa & Laljibhai .   This is the second time we visited Laljibhai – who grew up with Jackie in the same household .

i)  Stayed two (2) nights at Mayur/Bhavni home   from Tuesday 12 September to   Thursday 14 September 2017 . They had come over to Sushi/Rajni home to pick us up late in the afternoon.

Tuesday night , Anisha dropped by at her parents’ home before her parents dropped her to her in-laws home. Arjun was also home – with whom we had good conversation.

Note: In the morning of Wednesday,   when I was resting a bit in the living room (at Mayur’s place) -as usual I was looking for something to read, Lo Behold ! what I found ?   On the side of the sofa – I found a collection of books – amongst these there was one book which attracted my attention. The book is top Jain Book -translated into English . Title : Tattvartha Sutra – That Which is.   This book is so excellent about Jainism and principles, We have a copy at home in Canada. I was mesmerized . This is moment which will transform me from my recent interest in Mystery/Detective books to philosophy/theology serious books – especially books about Jainism as I had done study previously when we were in Toronto   Area – before 1986.

On   Wednesday 13 September 2017 – at about noon Bhavni dropped us at Sanjiv/Pallavi’s home .

Pallavi & Manubhabhi wanted to take us for lunch and spend better   part of day with them.   On the way, we picked up Manjubhabhi from her sister’s home   before we proceeded to go to the Swaminarayan Temple (Mandir) at Neasden, London . There we spent time in the Temple premises but we were at a   wrong time when the actual Temple Sacred Sanctum was closed and thus after admiring the temple from outside -we left. It was decided on the run that we can go to Maru’s Bhajia House ( at Wembley) for lunch.   So we ended up there.

What a lunch!   Just took us back to our old days in Nairobi when there Maru’s Bhajia were very popular . Great time .   Next to Maru’s Bhajia House was the Sanatan Temple . We went to worship there .

Note: The Sanatan Temple in Wembley   was opened in the Summer of 2010, took 14 years to build, and is made entirely of imported Indian limestone.

After a worship at the Sanatan Temple – it transpired (during conversations in the car) that Dhanubhai Chandaria ( from Kenya) has recently arrived in London. So it was decided to go and visit him at his sister’s home – where he was staying.   Dhanubhai has a great esteem for us and vice versa – so this was   a pleasant surprise – him being in London.   We had a great visit and at the end , Pallavi invited him/wife to join us at dinner at Pallavi/Sanjiv home that evening .   So dinner went well – all having good time.

After dinner, Sanjiv dropped us at Mayur/Bhavni’s home to spend the night there. It was close to mid-night – but we had a good conversation with Mayur and Arjun prior to going to sleep.

j)  Stayed at Ranjan/Mahendra home from Thursday 14 September to Sunday 17 September 2017.

Mayur dropped us at Mahendra/Ranjan place – going via Suryakant’s home ( to pick up a suitcase we had left there – Jasu was home ).

Dinesh came to visit at about 3.00 pm on   Thursday at Mahendra’s home.   Also surprise – Ranjan Malde   ( our LaxmiMasi’s daughter) also came over to visit – day before she was travelling to Norway to be with her   son ( her son works in Norway ).

All in all it turned out to be pleasant afternoon.

In the evening – there was dinner at Tikoo (Nimish) /Prasita home ( Kumudbhabhi) — Aashay, Savir are Nimish/Prasita’s sons.   Savir is Sachin’s age (about 8 years)   and Aashay is about 11 years old.   Also Kanti, Suryakant/Jasu were there.   Kumudbhabhi made puranpuri   – which she remembered as my favorite .

After dinner, Suryakant dropped us at Mahendra’s place.

On Friday , Rishi   – Mahendra/Ranjan’s grandson was dropped off by Richard in the morning while Ishan had gone to school.

Today is a special day at Oshwal Center for Snatra Puja   – which Mahendra like to participate.

Note:   This is a common Puja widely performed by most of the Deravasi Jain worshipers. It is also a starting Puja before any other main Puja.

So we all went (along with Rishi) to the Jain Temple at the Oshwal Center.   Met Manikaki . Participated in the Snatra Puja. Also   did Shanti Jal puja, Chaityavandan   (praying to the Tirthankars at the temple ), & Aarti at the Jain Temple.

Note:   Shanti Jal puja   –   Water symbolizes life”™s ocean of birth, death and misery. This Jain puja reminds that one should live one’s life with honesty, truthfulness, love and compassion towards all living beings. This way one will be able to cross life”™s ocean and attain liberation (Moksha).

Lunch was provided in the hall . Ate many ladoos ( 3 1/2 ladoos) . Nice curry with sweet peas, tindora & fulka.

After that returned back to Mahendra/Ranjan Home . Mahendra went to pick up Ishan from school .

Dinesh came to visit about 3.00 pm and stayed until 5.00 pm .

Both kids   (Ishan & Rishi) had a sleep over at their nana/nani ( Mahendra/Ranjan) place .

On Saturday, I went for a walk ( in the morning ) around the area by myself first   and then with Mahendra taking a walk (after lunch) with Rishi in the stroller. This time we   walked a longer route – stopping at Shammir’s place and saying Hi to Kanti as well as Shammor/Rina.

Bini/Anuj had come over to play with the kids (Ishan & Rishi) . Also Rehma joined them .

Shammir then came over at 3.00 pm to pick us up – as we were having dinner at his place.

While at Shammir – Tikoo(Nimish)/Prasita and Savir had come for a short to visit .   Also RamnikMama/TaraMami came for a visit. This was excellent that I finally met them -otherwise our contact would only remain on the phone – while we were in London.

Nimish/Prasita and Savir left after spending less than an hour with the group.

Then unexpected happened.   Daksha/Dipak came from Northampton to visit along with Ajul, Daxa Jr and her parents (from India).   They announced that Ajul and Daksha Jr were now engaged (sort of unofficially) and   Daksha (Ajul’s mom) distributed Dehradun sweets to celebrate the occasion. The guests – parents of Daksha Jr –   (Raj Isar & his wife) are from Dehradun, India.

Rina had gone & picked her mom – who then joined us.

Suryakant/Jasu and Kumudbhabhi also came over and joined in the celebration. After sometime, RamnikMama/TaraMami left. Then Krupesh turned up to join in the celebration .

All stayed till about 9.00 pm and then Daxa and the group left for dinner somewhere in   a restaurant and the rest remained behind to have dinner at Shammir/Rina home.   Ruan & Syan (kids ) had their dinner earlier but Ruan came downstairs & took some of our group photos. On the dinner table we were – myself, Jackie, Kanti, Kumudbhabhi , Rina’s mom, Suryajkant, Jasu , Shammir and Rina . Late at night Suryakant dropped us off at Mahendra/Ranjan place.

Kanti was to travel to Kenya catching his plane (from Heathrow Airport) on Sunday morning.

Suryakant/Jasu to travel to Spain with Purvi & her husband for 2 weeks holiday (on Monday 18 September 2017)

And we were travelling on Tuesday 19 September 2017 – to return to Canada.

k) Stayed with Hasu/Dhanak from Sunday 17 September to Tuesday 19 September 2017

Note: Tuesday 19 September 2017 – being our last day in U.K .

Shaina (Manubhabhi’s daughter) came over (from Kent -where lives) just at about noon on Sunday 17 September – picked us up from Mahendra/Ranjan home – along with all our luggage.   We dropped the luggage at Hasu’s place prior to proceeding to go pick up Manubhabhi .   After that we went for lunch at a South Indian restaurant called Saravanna Bhavan  (for dosa meal) in Wembley. I ate Kara Dosa & others selected   Roya Masala dosa.   Shaina’s treat. Thanks Shaina.

After lunch we proceeded to Pravin/Champu home for a visit. Met   Sheelan’s ( Pravin/Champu’s son) wife – Murrey – and her two boys -about 5 or 6 years old .   From there we went across the road to visit KankuKaki and   Meghjikaka.

After that we were dropped off at Hasu’s place to stay   (   note: there till our departure for Ottawa on Tuesday 19 September 2017).

Visited Radiatben (Dhanak’s mom) in the evening of Sunday at her Senior Apartment building . Very majestic lady.

On Monday , we   Visited Amar/Vikita at their home. The kids (Aarav & Kiaan ) were home .   Amar had taken time off from work.   After that we   went to   visit Jitesh/Parul & Ashni (daughter) at their home.

Monday night Atul came over to visit . Also ShantiMama/LekhaMami came to visit and we all had good conversation.

note: Visited Laljibhai 2 times during our visit to London.

Event 9   – Departure ( adios) – Michhami Dukkadam to all

Well   it is departure time for Ottawa, Canada  after a beautiful  and heavenly visit to intermingle and meet with our family members and friends – in the U.K   but also those who came from Kenya. In fact Anjali (Sobhas/Hansa’s daughter) came from the USA. Note : most came to attend Anisha’s wedding.

On Tuesday 19 September 2017 at about noon – Hasu dropped us off at the Heathrow Airport Dhanak had already gone to work .    Plane (AC889) departed at 3.45 pm local time and we arrived in Canada (Ottawa Airport) at 6.15 pm local time   – Nina was there to pick us up .On the way we   stopped at T & T Super Market (a Chinese Grocery Store) – picked up some groceries and some Chinese Dried Plum packets.

Adieus —- London.    Many thanks specially to Hasu & Dhanak for welcoming us on arrival and then at the end taking us to the Airport for smooth departure . You have made it possible for  our visit to England to become very enjoyable and comfortable.

There was so much fun and so much opening up & jogging of memories and making new memories and enjoying the late nights , restaurants, visit to family members & friends (specially from Royal College ), visit to temples and moreover attending and being part of pleasant social events – like wedding and engagement -well informal though.

Besides there was evidence of how many have moved on and aging – by coming across   grandchildren   who are coddled and looked after by many of the grandparents (all amongst our family and friends). We enjoy our grandchildren back in Canada who make our lives joyous and alive every day. Thus seeing many of family and friends are also having same   experience was very cathartic.

Well to end – we are really very thankful to all, to each and every one of you who gave us cheer and laughs during our stay in U.K.

It is time for me to say Michhami Dukkadam to you all and genuinely if I have offended you in any way during our visit – I can assure it would have been unintentional and I seek forgiveness for any of my actions   – if such was the case.

Please note Jackie (my wife) expresses similar sentiments.

And it was the Jain Paryushana festival   time  during our visit.

POEM for my AmuMama ( Uncle)

My AmuMama   passed away on 12 July 2017 in Nairobi, Kenya.   AmuMama was   born in Kenya , lived his whole life in Kenya.   AmuMama had been a pillar to me – when I was 16 years old and completed my Senior Cambridge in Mombasa – he helped me with moral and financial support so I could start on my journey to become a professional engineer . I graduated from the Royal College , Nairobi ( second batch of the newly opened college   -with Mahatma Gandhi statue- funds contributed by the Indian Community of East Africa) in 1962 as a Civil Engineer with professional qualification from the Institution of Civil Engineers of London   . With the dire financial situation my parents (specially in 1956 ) – I was given support by my AmuMama (plus  all other of his brothers) . I stayed with the joint household  of  my AmuMama & GunvantMama on Duke Street in Nairobi – and then walking from there to the Royal College precinct.   I was also provided an allowance of   30 shillings per month by my AmuMama – with so much love and care.     During third year,   I moved to the Hostel attached to the Royal College. After my graduation   and my work career , my AmuMama remained my best friend and support in  case of any need – like transportation etc. Well he was such helpful person for anyone who needed his help  – with cheerful smile and witty conversation on his lips.

We – I   will miss you a lot but then you are always in my heart.

Here is a small POEM I offer to my AmuMama:

12 July 2017

Oh! my AmuMama ( My uncle )

A spark quality

ignites others for great things

like an extinguished spark he passes away

But leaves all the crackles of happiness

AmuMama remained a strength

to many a family members and friends

like a pole supporting vines

He gave all he can with humility

For me AmuMama was a saviour

like a proverbial angle in the heaven

His holding hand of a 16 year old

was a brightness in the Youngman’s life

AmuMama is epitome of service

Humility, politeness, respect

His smiles and jokes were radiant

spreading joy and cheers to all

My AmuMama, My hero

You held hand when most needed

You were a doting grandfather

We will miss you to eternity

We pray that your soul is blessed

We pray that you have a seat in heaven

We pray that you join eternity with happiness

We pray for your scent of humility and service

Your loving nephew – who misses you so much.

AmuMama passed away in Nairobi , Kenya on Monday 10 July 2017

age – 85 years.

Saturday 01 July 2017

Today being Canada Day and celebrating Canada’s 150th Anniversary – Mistry family ( kids and parents) came over to Deep River to participate in the celebration – normally/traditionally nana/nani go over there to Mackey to celebrate the Canada Day but this year nana’s POEM titled O! Canada was being recited by the Mayor of Deep River at the Campus in Deep River as part of the celebration.   So both Sitara and Sachin were thrilled – the day was fabulous and the parade to the campus delightful.

Here is what Nina posted on her Facebook ( 02 July 2017) – with a photo of the stage where the Mayor recited the Poem.:

” Dad and Mom on stage while The Mayor of Deep River reads Dads poem for Canada Day 150 at the Canada Day Opening Ceremonies Saturday July 1, 2017 ”

After lunch -all decided to go to Mackey to join in the fun there (at the Old Mackey Park on Jennings Rd.) -the weather has become soggy – a drizzle was on.   After some time at the Park ( where the kids and nana joined in playing BINGO under a tent)   – all went to Mistry home and had dinner there – celebrating Canada Day by cutting a well decorated (in Canada flag motif) cake by nani.   Kids played with nana and nani ( separately)   different game – from treasure hunt to card and video games. At about 9.00 p.m all decided to go back to Deep River to enjoy the fireworks display at the campus (along Ottawa River).
Of course Mistrys in their car and nana/nani in theirs.     After the display, Mistrys went back to Mackey at about 10.30 p.m.

Sunday   02 July 2017

All three kids (Maya, Kieran and Priya) returned from the cottage (their grandparents) -driven back by the parents.

Wednesday 05 July 2017

Lemonade Stand

It is an entrepreneurial day . Both Maya and Kieran have established a Lemonade Stand outside their home in Toronto. Price for a glass of Lemonade is 50c.   Priya is sitting behind under a tree – keeping a watch .

Their mom sent an e-mail (dated 05 July 2017) to family members to that effect (announcing the opening of the lemonade stand) – see below:

” Maya and Kieran had a successful lemonade stand today. Here they are sampling the product, while Priya observes in the background. She was a good marketing prop ”

Thursday 06 July 2017
This day Sachin goes for 3 day camping at the Camp Lau-Ren’s for 3 days. His mom and Sitara dropped him (in the morning at 10.00 am) at the camp – while nana/nani went from Deep River to Camp Lau-ren -also to cheer him for his venture. His dad could not go as he was working.   Sachin was all smiling, happy to be at the camp.
Note:   Camp Lau-Ren ”” a summer camp for children aged 6-16.   Canoeing, archery, swimming, life study, crafts, sports, campfires are a few of the popular activities that take place during the week.

Sachin will be picked up (to come home) on Saturday -at about 10 am and Mistry family will then come over to Deep River at nana/nani home. This is the day – it is planned to celebrate both kids birthday (Sachin turning over to 8th on 20 July and Sitara turning over to 10th on 5th August) – celebration here in Deep River a bit early as they are going away (travelling to U.K)   on a visit to their Ba and family in U.K.

Sachin was picked up from the Camp Lau-ren by his parents (and Sitara) – and after having a hair-cut in Deep river,   he came over to nana/nani home along with family – all had lunch. The kids spent the afternoon with nana/nani while parents went to Pembroke for the last minute shopping before going overseas. After parents came back from shopping , all had dinner with nana/nani -and after that the family celebrated two birthdays ( a bit early but as the family was to go overseas – the kids birthdays will be celebrated this year in UK) and thus nana/nani organized the birthdays. There were to cakes                                 ( ordered from Valumart – local Grocer ) a pink for Sitara with the inscription   “Happy 10th – Sitara ” and a blue one for Sachin with the inscription   “Happy 8th – Sachin ” . Also nani made a Cherry pie (a request by Sitara) . All had fun. After the cake cutting and eating the goodies   – all settled down in the living room where nana/nani gave each kid their birthday cards and gift . They liked the poems nana wrote for celebrating their birthday . Also the gift of LED spinner – which is   a rage with school kids these days.
When Sachin hugged nana so deeply   – nana mentioned that he is a special boy to nana -he responded immediately to me saying “you are a very special nana”.         So much love and care.

Tuesday 11 July 2017

Mistry family drove to Ottawa in rental car   ( a minivan) to travel to U.K . They will be boarding a plane at Ottawa Airport –     then fly to Toronto to catch the international flight at Toronto Airport – to fly to Manchester in U.K.
They stopped over at nana/nani home for a few minutes – dropping Sitara and Sachin’s stuffedanimals =- for nana/nani to take care of them while they are away.   Sitara’s big bear called   ” Bear Bear” has parked itself on the sofa in the nana/nani living room – Sachin small stuffed animal is being looked after by Bear Bear. So now they cannot get lonely at all

Ba phoned Toronto to say hi to kids there. But they were in car – going to a campsite at Georgian Bay, Muskoka , Ontario.   Muskoka boasts some of the most sought after camping in Ontario, and even in the country. Maya and Kieran had   a long conversation with Ba – Kieran professing his love for Ba with a long musical sentence.
After returning back in Toronto – they were heading back to the cottage .   See below:
An e-mail from Maya’s mom dated   Tuesday 18 July 2017

” I hope you are doing well. It must be quiet without Nina and family around. We would love to see you, but we are heading up to the cottage on Saturday to start a week-long visit with my parents, sisters and all the kids. Erika, Mathieu and Julia just arrived from Switzerland yesterday.

Would you be able to come tomorrow and stay until Saturday when we go up north? Otherwise we will be back from the cottage on August 7 (Maya’s birthday!) and will be in the city until August 11, so we would love to have you stay with us that week. ”

Let me know!

Today is Sachin’s birthday. He is celebrating it this year in U.K. – Rubgy . It’s also his Grandma’s   ( Ba – Sunjay’s mom) ) birthday too .   This is the second time Sachin had opportunity to have his birthday celebrated in U.K.   The first one was when he was   only 1 year   old.
From the phone call – it was understood that they all went out to see castles etc. during the day. Sachin was all excited because he got   a camera as a gift for his birthday – from his parents. He is taking many photos of the places that he visits with his sister and family .

Wednesday 02 August 2017

The kids – Sitara and Sachin are having a great time in U. K. – being driven or taken by their parents to see relatives – have a birthday party at Ba’s home (on July 20) , visit places of interests.   They also have been on the tube (what we call here subway) in London.

Saturday 05 August 2017

Today is Sitara’s 10th birthday , She is in England at her Ba’s home – along with Sachin (her brother) and their parents . They celebrated Sitara’s birthday with a bang at her Ba’s place.   Sitara decorated her birthday cake – so beautiful – she has learnt the art of decorating cakes now . Her Aunt Bhadrika and Magical Uncle along with her cousin Yasmin also were present at the party. Sachin had a great time – specially he got an opportunity to play with his Magical uncle in the yard – looking for Pokémons

Monday 07 August 2017

Kids are expected to arrive from England – landing at Ottawa Airport at 6.15 pm
Today is Maya’s 6th birthday. She will celebrate the occasion at the cottage     ( her grandpa’s cottage in Muskoka) – where she will be with her Aunt Heather, Ryan uncle   and their son Cole (Maya’s cousin brother ) , also with her Aunt Erica, Matthews uncle and their daughter Julia ( Maya’s cousin sister) plus with her grandpa and grandma (maternal) along with her dad, her brother Kieran and baby sister Priya.
It is also a Civic Holiday in Canada.
So Sitara and Sachin returned from England with their parents – flew to Ottawa Airport by Air Canada and stopped over at Deep River at nana/nani home for a few minutes   (just about 11.00 pm) – to pick up some groceries and their garage   opener. After that they proceeded to Mackey – for rest and recuperate from exhaustive trip to England. They had a great time and enjoyed their journey.

Saturday 12 August 2017

This day was an open house at CNL in Chalk River – where Sitara/sachin’s dad works . There was so much to see.   Both Sitara and Sachin went to the plant site with their parents – and saw so many varieties of scientific work (experiments / demonstrations etc) . Nana/nani also went separately   but both kids were happy to see their nana/nani/ Nana explaned that he was also working there at CNL (AECL) -and retired in 2007 – the year Sitara was born.

Sunday   13 August 2017

To-day Sitara was driven towards Toronto (by her parents & Sachin) to meet with her SunirMama/ShannonMami (and cousins) half way between Mackey and Toronto. Sitara is going to spend a week in Toronto with her cousins & family. When at Toronto she will also go and participate in a day Science camp.
This is what Sitara’s mom posted on her Facebook wall:
” Yin and Yang. Sad to drop Sitara off but know she will have the best time with her cousins and family in Toronto for a week. And it is such a gorgeous day for drive stopping at all the stops along the way eating and buying fresh treats.”
Note: Maya, Kieran and Priya had gone for camping during the weekend with their parents .

Here is what Shannon ( Sitara’s Mami) sent by e-mail dated 14   August:

Hi all,

We are having a great time so far with Sitara. Here are a couple photos from yesterday on our drive home. I was too busy playing with the 4 kids in the pool to take any photos at the wedding pool party last night, but we all had fun! Most of my extended family members hadn’t seen Sitara since our wedding, when she was only 1 year old! Sitara had butter tarts for the first time last night and professed them to be delicious   She slept well and Sunir will be taking her to camp soon.

Hope you all have a wonderful day!

Shannon

Monday 14 August 2017

Sitara spent one day at the Computer Day camp in Toronto.   Also great time with her cousins there.

Well Sachin felt lonely being all alone at home – now Sitara had disappeared to Toronto for   a week. So nana/nani went to Mackey in the evening – to spend time with him . Nana brought him gift of two Pokemon cartoon books – Sachin was very happy. After sometime , all went outdoors – for Sachin wanted to ride a bike- he still learning it but getting there. All had fun – and Sitara and cousins called (helped by Sunir/Shannon) from Toronto on   “skype” so everyone had a time to talk with each other.
Tuesday 15 August 2017
Here is what Maya’s mom sent by e-mail dated 15 August 2017:

Photo Updates   (sent two photos with the e-mail)
“Here is the boat dollhouse Sitara and Maya made, as well as Sitara and Priya at the park yesterday. Today Sunir took Sitara and Maya to Chinatown for the afternoon (no photos because the camera on his phone is broken, but Sitara took some she can show you). Tomorrow afternoon I am taking the 4 kids to the zoo and splash pad. It’s been a busy, fun week so far! “

Friday 18 August 2017

To-day Sitara’s mom, dad & little brother (Sachin) will drive from Mackey to Toronto and stay with   SunirMama/ShannonMami   & Sitara/Sachin’s cousins Maya, Kieran and Priya – and then all of them will return to Mackey on Sunday – with Sitara returning to Mackey after spending a successful week in Toronto with her cousins and also attending Computer Science day camp for a week . This also gives opportunity to Sachin to enjoy his sister and cousins for the weekend being together.

Saturday 19 August 2017

So the kids -all of them -five grandchildren – had lovely time together at the Centre Island in Toronto- being shepherded (driven) there by Shannon/Sunir and Nina/ Sunjay.

ShannonMami sent the follwing e-mail (on the same day)

” Here are some photos from today’s trip to Centre Island.”

Even Priya participated in all activities there – including sitting on the horse of musical ride.

Monday 21 August 2017

Today , Sitara came early to her nana/nnai home in Deep River – dropped by her dad   . Her mom was going with Sachin to his ice hockey match in the neighboring town of Petawawa.   BothSachin and hisn mom came to nana/nani home just after 1.00 pm . After that both kids helped their mom to make   a pin-hole viewer (from a cereal box) to watch the sun’s eclipse which happened at Deep River at about

2.27 pm . It was very exciting -both kids, their mom and nana/nani observed the eclipse – though sun was getting covered with clouds -on and off.

After the sun’s eclipse , Nina helped nana/nani to pack luggage to go to London tomorrow – Tuesday 22 August 2017. Now nana/nani will be going to UK for about 4 weeks –   both Sitara and Sachin have just been back from a visit to UK with their parents .

Tuesday 19 September 2017

nana/nani returned back from London, UK – by AC889 flight from Heathrow Airport in London to Ottawa. Nina was waiting to welcome her parents . She hugged both parents and then we all drove away to go to Deep River. On the way , she stopped over at T & T Supermarket ( A Chinese grocery store) for some supplies – so nana got an opportunity to   obtain some ” Chinese Dried Plums ” packets.

Apparently these dried plums help the digestive system. Nana had tried these in London (recommended by his cousin Atul ) and seem to have worked.

——————–

During the time when grandparents ( nana/nani to Sitara & Sachin and Bapuji/Ba to Maya, Kieran & Priya) were visiting London, U.K. – the following happened as heard from kids’ parents once in a while.

Priya is growing up to be one year old soon. She is standing up by herself – albeit holding a sofa edge . She has few teeth ( I think there are 4 teeth alraedy)- front ones and a big smile – always.

Kieran has moved on to a Pre-school (Pre KG) school -at least a couple of days in week and the remainder 3 days of the week he still spends at the daycare.

Maya is now (this year starting in September 2017) in Grade 1 . It is interesting to her (and of course to all of us) that there are 3 girls this year in her class named ” Maya “.   Maya however exclaims to her mom/dad   ” So far it’s been very good in the school “. What a girl! Gives us joy.

Sachin is now in Grade 3 and Sitara has moved on to Grade 5 this year (starting in September 2017).

Wednesday 20 September 2017

Both Sitara and Sachin came over after school ( brought over by their dad – as Nina was working this day at IDA store in Deep River) and both were excited to see nana/nani – hugged them and then settled down a bit before dinner. They had dinner here at nana/nani home   – as Sitara had swimming session while Sachin relaxed before being picked up by his dad to go to Mackey. Note: Sitara walked to IDA store after her swimming session to be with her mom – and then go home to Mackey when IDA store closed.

Thursday 28 September 2017

Both kids were dropped in the morning by their dad at nana/nani   home – after breakfast and a bit relaxation – nana/nani drive them to school at 9:15 am. Nina is working in Pembroke this day .   Note: this was a repeat of yesterday   – Wednesday 27 September 2017.

Sitara had a walkathon in Deep River at 10.00 am – passed over Rutherford Av. at about 10:30 am   – greeted by nani (waiting to cheer her and her classmates . Nana also joined in to cheer her.

In the evening the kids had an open house   at the school   (Mackenzie Community School) – starting at 6:15 pm . Both nana/nani went to the open house.

Canadian immigration story – Story of Acceptance and Integration

Deep River 150 – Why I love Canada …..

Canadian immigration story   – Story of Acceptance and Integration

For me to love Canada is not the issue to ponder – as there are a range of reasons to love Canada     Oh! we love you Canada – from our heart and soul.

I consider myself as most fortunate for having spent greater part of my life in this beautiful land Canada.

My wife and I emigrated to Canada in 1974 – on 03 March 1974 to be precise — having travelled by air (from Nairobi, Kenya) and landing in Toronto – which was just getting out of winter season. It was bright and sunny day and having a friend at the airport to welcome us which brightened our arrival.

Ours is a heartwarming and touching experience of immigration and settling down in Canada. We were fortunate to have a friend in Toronto (who had migrated to Canada from Kenya a few years before we did) and thus it made a bit easier – especially for my wife to come to a new country.

It so happened I already had a previous stay in Canada for one year. I had spent one year (June 1965- June 1966) in Niagara Falls, Ontario   having come on a Fellowship from the Food Agriculture Organization (F.A.O) of   the United Nations   for practical training (with Acres Consulting Services) in the design of hydraulic structures (hydro power and drainage/irrigation projects). In a way, I had previous experience of all four seasons of Canada   including winter months (with some skating, skiing and driving car on icy roads) – so I was not so   perturbed when emigrating to Canada. Well my wife was a bit worried about winter but comforted by the knowledge that we have had a friend in Toronto. She also was aware of my acquaintances in Niagara Falls, Ontario from my previous stay in Canada.   So the first step to our new home was somewhat comfortably made.

One of the difficulties that we had when emigrating from Kenya (in those days) was very little foreign exchange was allowed for the people travelling abroad. So we had very meager funds for our                     sustenance   but we took a chance to emigrate – hoping to obtain employment as soon we arrived in Toronto.   My wife was a   teacher for high school kids in Kenya and thus had abilities also to fit in with some opportunities.

It was difficult for the first couple of weeks – while getting a bit orientated and then looking for work so we can support ourselves.   As we say – we got a break (someone always looking after us in life) – we made a social visit to meet and say Hi! to one of our old acquaintances (from my previous stay in Niagara Falls) – who was in their office in Toronto and somehow it culminated in my getting   a job (professional) with Acres Consulting Services in Niagara Falls. Thus our roots in the country were established.

Our stay in Niagara Falls, Ontario was just thrilling but also very hectic with many activities – from settling down to becoming part of the new social milieu and Lo Behold!   starting a family.

My family is so besotted to Canada as here we started our family. This is like an experience   of a miracle. My wife and I were married in 1967 in Nairobi, Kenya and for a while we remained without any children – even after trying various medical interventions.   Lo Behold ! after we arrived in Canada on 03 March 1974 and the first medical specialist we established ( in April 1974 in Niagara Falls, Ontario)   came with the unbelievable news that a baby is on the way.   It was difficult to believe and in fact our extended family in Kenya did not believe it till they saw the tell-tale photos.   We are so fortunate that our daughter was born on 14 December 1974   – 9 months and few days after our arrival in Canada. We then were fortunate to have a son after 4 years – to have someone for my daughter to play with . Both   kids were born in Niagara Falls . Now we are fortunate to have a total of five (5) grandchildren who keep us young and active. They are into swimming, skating,   skiing and play ice hockey (besides art, music and class work) – all Canadian.     Love you Canada!

My assimilation in Canada was from the beginning   – my professional life was similar to what I was doing in Kenya. My wife and I were accepted and made welcome in many community activities that we participated in Niagara Falls and other places that we moved over the years. We made friends who became   ” our families ” and who loved our children when they grew up.   Oh! Canada   – what warmth and acceptance.   Love you Canada!

Those who know Niagara Falls – know it for the big waterfalls here and also as a honeymoon capital of North America but there is more to see and understand about Canada here. The city is replete with different kinds of bridges ( vertical lift, suspension and other types   ) -many built in late 1800s over Welland   Canal and over Niagara River connecting to USA. The Welland Canal is a ship canal connecting  Lake Ontario and lake Erie. The Canal boasts many lock gates – which  enables ships to ascend and descend the Niagara Escarpment and bypass Niagara Falls. Many built in late 1800s or early 1900s.

There is so much to study and learn about the marvel of engineering, technology and construction methodology   applied by early pioneers and their perseverance and tenacity under very trying conditions .

This country is exceptional and for that we need to thank the pioneers – the early ones who suffered all kinds of winters/weather, vast distances and lack of facilities and yet persevered and stood fast to build this modern country from coast to coast.   There is so much to love about Canada – the pioneers take the cake.

My wife and I found Niagara Falls becoming our home almost immediately after moving there in early April 1974.   We had friends here from my previous stay (June 1965-June 1966 ) and more from my colleagues at work as well as from our community work that we participated. In fact I became the Chair of the local United Nations Association Chapter in Niagara Falls – which kept us active socially. My wife was embraced like a daughter by quite a few local Canadian families and thus was able to ward of loneliness (complicated by being pregnant in a foreign land)   –   being away from our extended family in Kenya.   We also learnt Canadian pastime of picking berries from the farms around Niagara Falls and my wife learnt preserving these (making jams and jellies) besides   making pancakes and enjoying maple syrup. We being vegetarian – kept away from hot dogs and hamburgers though not from French fries.

As part the United Nations Association Chapter activities – we had Hon. Flora MacDonald (M.P.) come over as chief guest one year.

We also   established a prayer temple during September 1974 in our home in Niagara Falls and were holding prayer services once a month. The central theme of the services was primarily ” prayers for peace “.   Many   people participated in this unique assembly   and prayed together for peace in the world – as peace is paramount for progress and for development of dignified living with interplay across different societies in the world.   We were privileged to have Hon. Roger Young (M.P.) as the chief speaker at one of the prayers. Unfortunately the temple had to be wound down during August 1975 due to our   relocation to Montreal.

We love Canada for the Canadian character of openness with embrace and hearty support of diverse activities without prejudice.

I have to travel sometime due to work related responsibilities, at one time (1979) I was in Sri Lanka for a few days (on assignment for engineering work on an irrigation project there), my wife remaining behind in Niagara Falls with our daughter and expecting another child.   Our ” new extended family ” were just fabulous who kept family vigilance over my   wife and daughter – without an iota of intruding.   We love Canada for such warmth and care.

The engineering work means we have to move sometime to new locations – so we ended up in Montreal (during 1975) for a hydro project   ( Churchill Falls Gull Island Hydro Project ) which was supposed to last at least for five years – if not more.   So we sold our house in Niagara Falls and bought another house ( in a new development) in Laval, Quebec   – while working in downtown Montreal.   Then suddenly the project was cancelled (the funds for the project were withdrawn) and we had to move back to Niagara Falls – having lived in the house for only a few months. Unfortunately the housing market in Quebec collapsed at the election of Rene Lévesque as Première of Quebec -who had promised for referendum for separation of Quebec .   It became difficult to sell the house .   However, my Niagara Falls employer took care of the expenses (while the house was empty) without quibble and thus made our life a bit easier.   Love you Canada for fair minded employer.

Montreal City is fabulous – it is vibrant and full of colour and activities. We liked the old town – bought a few paintings from the artists there. The city would have been top in Canada except its progress was curtailed after the Independence Referendum call and the French language primacy in the province.

English /French politics and kind of rejection felt by French by the English speaking Canada – which led to independence movement under Rene Levesque – PM Pierre Trudeau fought the dilemma passionately and came up with best solution- which defeated the referendum   – and now the country is well balanced and pleasant to live . He remains (in my mind) the best Prime Minister of Canada. I believe that without Pierre Trudeau, we would not have, today, a Canada from coast to coast to coast.

Most of the differences within the country – religious   (Protestant vs Catholics) or political polemics                   ( French vs English ) have been tackled over the years in a democratic dialogue and fair play.  Love you Canada for democracy and fair play.

After   about a year from returning to Niagara Falls , we were back to Montreal on assignment during late 1976 for the design of Wolsung1 – Candu nuclear power station in South Korea;   Acres Consulting Services joining with Canatom as Design Consultants to Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd. (AECL). This is when I got to know and interface with personnel from AECL.

We moved into our vacant house in Laval.

I vaguely remember the snow storm that hit the area in the early 1977 ( I think it was Friday January 28 )- anyway it took more than 4 hours by train ( which normally takes 1 hour ) from   Bonaventure Metro (in downtown Montreal) to Sainte-Catherine – from where I have to walk about 10 minutes to my house.   When the train arrived at the station, it was dark and windy. When I got off the train I found myself alone trying to walk towards my home in pitch dark and high winds. It was an instant when I started questioning as to   what I am doing in this country but then a miracle happened – I saw a head with dark hair at about 100 feet ahead of me. This instantly removed my loneliness and I managed to trundle to my house (albeit slow) . However when I arrived at the house, I found the driveway was full of snow – some 3 feet high and also the patio door was jammed with ice. As I could not get to the front door, I had to shovel the snow from the driveway and help the wife to thaw the patio door before I could settle down and play with my 1 year old daughter -who had been waiting anxiously for daddy to return from work.

It was a momentous time for the family in Montreal . We managed to sell the house after staying in it for about a year and half and then moved into a rented apartment in Pierrefonds area of Montreal. We enjoyed the vibrancy of life in both Laval and Montreal as well as Quebec City and the Mont-Tremblant area.

One pleasant memory of that time is the fragrance and quality of egg breads and rum cakes that we used to get from a Jewish Bakery in Laval –   that would melt in your mouth . Believe it or not, after we left Montreal in 1979 – whenever we go back to Quebec for a visit , we would invariably go to that bakery in Laval and bring back few egg breads and rum cakes home.   What fun! We love you Canada.

We returned back to Niagara Falls in early 1979 . We are now done with living or working in Montreal. After that I worked on miscellaneous assignments  with Acres Consulting Services . One of the assignments was in Calgary area for a few weeks during summer 1980. That was quite an experience in Canadian living   – where people go by plane for trout fishing and barbecuing afterwards. I got invited to a couple of these barbecues – though I do not eat fish but the camaraderie was exhilarating.   Calgary people are very friendly – even the waiters there are more friendlier than anywhere in Canada or the world. I know because I have been to most parts of Canada and also many countries in the world.

I must not forget the Stampede – all the hullabaloo   around it . I got myself a cowboy hat (a city boy and not quite fitting in the style).   The Calgary Stampede is an annual rodeo and festival held every July . Wow! such fun! Only in Canada.

While we are reminiscing my sojourn in Calgary (Alberta) – it does remind me of some important historical fact. Tommy Douglas in Saskatchewan floated the Medicare in 1962 but then in 1950   Alberta’s Social Credit Party also introduced a public health care plan – which became a harbinger for the Canadian Universal Health Plan.

While it is difficult to talk about all the reasons why we love Canada —   I will mention one which is significant . We Canadians are so fortunate   – we have one of the most effective, professional and dedicated Health Service in the whole wide world .   For that we are very grateful, Canada . We love Canada immensely .

My career changed in 1981 – I joined AECL in their CANDU division   (in Toronto ).   So now we moved from Niagara Falls to Mississauga   (Toronto area) where we bought a house – not far away from Sheridan Park – where AECL offices were located. This was the time when interest rates were high and most people were struggling to get mortgage paid and keep the living expenses in check.

While in Toronto area – one remembers the downtown and the Eaton Centre. The traffic and noise is there along with all the excitement of living in a large metropolitan city. I remember Chuck   e Cheese restaurant   – ” where a kid can be   a kid “. Our kids used to enjoy their time there . I do not remember when we stopped going there but all in all we had good times.

On social note,   I became the President of the Jain Society of Toronto in 1985.   During that time , the dark incident of Air India (Flight 182) happened. The bombing of an Air India flight from Toronto to Bombay on 23 June 1985 ”” killing all 329 people on board ”” remains Canada”™s deadliest terrorist attack. The incident was the largest mass murder in Canadian history, and the deadliest incident in the history of Air India.

The   Canadian Authority at the time were shocked but made a ” faux pas “.   Brian Mulroney   was   the Prime Minister of Canada at the time.  When conveying shock and condolences to India for the death of hundreds of people, the tone of wording implied that the Government of Canada had assumed most of them were of Indian citizenship. In fact most were Canadian citizens – though of Indian origin.   Many people were surprised by the Canadian statement .  I (as the President of the Jain Society) got an opportunity to comment about the tragedy on the CBC radio and I pointed out this   ” faux pas ” and our dismay. My comment was reiterated a couple of days on CBC. For whatever reason the Government of Canada corrected the situation subsequently when all realized that the tragedy is impacting Canada more than India.

It should be noted that in earlier years when racial abuse was so prevalent around the world – this country (Canada) opened and welcomed and assimilated many Americans of African descent – gave them dignity like no other country in the world would dare or think of. As recent as a few months ago Canada again excelled in its intrinsic value and welcomed Syrian refugees with love and respect. This humanitarian action at appropriate time by Canada is very telling. This is why we love Canada.

Prior to our move to Deep River, in 1986   there was this burst of entrepreneurial energy which motivated my wife to get into owning and running a Convenience Store business in Hamilton (on Wellington Street) for a year (1985 – 1986) – which was then sold off when moving to Deep River. That year our family moved to Hamilton   – for kids schooling and parental guidance. Our daughter   (11 years old) became familiar with Hamilton city and use of its transportation system.

A great change was effected in my career and in our family’s lifestyle in 1986 when we moved to Deep River – with my taking up a position with Chalk River Nuclear Laboratories. Initially, this move did not meet with family’s unanimous approval as it was a move away to a smaller community but over the years Deep River grew in great esteem by all in the family. There was also one more hic-cup in accepting Deep River as a pleasant place for residing – and that was the existence of swarms of black flies and bugs .This situation has not improved but there is more tolerance and acceptance of this nature -induced phenomena and the family members have learnt to accept this as normal in the general Deep River lifestyle.

One of the advantages that the family experienced is the stability it provided in our daily life. The possibility of frequent move to different town by me on a work assignment (with my previous employment in Niagara Falls) ended and we remained anchored in Deep River – which gave my kids   constant and consistence environment for establishment of friends   – rather than having to change to new friends when we move to another city.

Our both kids went through school system in Deep River and when they finished their high school                         ( Mackenzie High) – each went away to pursue further studies at Universities of his/her choice. Now they are active participants in the economic development of Canada .

While in Deep River – the family took a trip in the summer of 1989 to all provinces west – to British Columbia in our family car on the Trans-Canada Highway. It took almost a couple of weeks to arrive at Vancouver as we made stops at all the provinces in between. At Thunder Bay we visited Kakabeka Falls. The falls is known as the “Niagara of the North ” for its similarity to Niagara Falls . On the way the kids collected box full of different types of rocks such as Amethyst – learning something about Canadian geology.   There was also this thrill of having the view of Lake Superior.   Alberta provided the greatest fun – like having picnic at the Rockies and enjoying the thrill of the Calgary Stampede. Manitoba and Saskatchewan Province  were   resplendent with prairies . The prairies in Canada refers to temperate   grasslands.  We stopped to visit friends at Pinawa (near Winnipeg)   who were working at AECL (The Whiteshell Laboratories ) . This laboratory is now closed down . In 1998, AECL decided to close Whiteshell Laboratories. Vancouver and Victoria were pleasant cities to visit . Victoria is a city known for its wonderful gardens. The return journey back to Deep River took some 4 days .

Discovery of Canada trip did not end only going west.   The family embarked on a road trip during summer of 1991 to the east up to Prince Edwards Island in our family car. We followed the Trans-Canada highway east towards Fredericton.

Our visit to Montreal and Quebec City brought back our memories when we had earlier stayed at Montreal.   Kids loved and enjoyed the horse-drawn carriage ride in Quebec City.

Next New Brunswick (Fredericton) – then Nova Scotia (Halifax) – then Prince Edwards Island (Charlottetown) and finally Newfoundland  (St. John’s ) and Labrador (we did not do Labrador).

There is also Saint John, a port city of the Bay of Fundy in New Brunswick. The Bay of Fundy is known for having the world’s highest tides, and also a population of whales.

Amongst many touristy things, we went to Peggy’s Cove (Nova Scotia) , did Magnetic Hill (near Moncton, New Brunswick) , went to Army Museum Halifax Citadel and visited the Lucy Maud Montgomery Cavendish Home on Prince Edwards Island   – where she wrote the novel Anne of Green Gables.

After we returned from the east, my wife thought of exercising her entrepreneurial spirit again and we bought a business (in the fall of 1991) in Petawawa   (our neighborly town – where a Canadian Forces Base is located). The business was wound up in the year 1999.

My kids have found partners of their choice , they are married and we are pleasantly the grandparents to five (5) grandchildren – two (2) of them are here near us and three (3) are in Toronto.

The grandkids are enjoying Canadian lifestyle . They are into swimming, skating, skiing and play ice hockey (besides art, music and class work).     Love you Canada!

As I had mentioned earlier this flowering of our family is a gift (with our emigration to Canada) that we cherish very deeply and which blossoms our love for Canada immeasurably.

Deep River has provided us many openings /possibilities ( similar to when we were in Niagara Falls &Toronto) to participate in the community activities.  I have fond memories of my time with Deep River Police Service Board, Deep River Hospital Board, Community Liaison Group for Port Hope Waste, Ontario Professional Engineers   -local Chapter , local bridge (card game) groups amongst others.

As we are celebrating 150th anniversary of Canadian Confederation , I am proud  to be a Canadian from since some 43 years ago – and my wife and I celebrated this year our 50th Wedding anniversary on Saturday 27 May here in Canada – with both of our kids   & their spouses along with all 5 grandchildren – participating in the Tamarack Ottawa Race in Ottawa – along with thousands.

We are here in Canada, with its breathtaking beauty, concern for others, and pride in its diversity.

Thank you Canada for our acceptance and loving integration in the Canadian milieu.

We wish the best for the 150th Anniversary of Canadian Confederation.

Deep River 150 – Why I love Canada …..

For me to love Canada is not the issue to ponder – as there are a range of reasons to love Canada     Oh! we love you Canada – from our heart and soul.

This country is exceptional and for that we need to thank the pioneers – the early ones who suffered all kinds of winters/weather, vast distances and lack of facilities and yet persevered and stood fast to build this modern country from coast to coast.

Most of the differences within the country – religious   (Protestant vs Catholics) or political polemics                  ( French vs English ) have been tackled over the years in a democratic dialogue and fair play.

In early years when racial abuse was so prevalent around the world – this country opened and welcomed and assimilated many Americans of African descent – gave them dignity like no other country in the world would dare or think of.   As recent as a few months ago Canada again excelled in its intrinsic value and welcomed Syrian refugees with love and respect.

While it is difficult to talk about all the reasons why we love Canada —   I will mention one which is significant . We Canadians are so fortunate   – we have one of the most effective, professional and dedicated Health Service in the whole wide world .   For that we are very grateful, Canada . We love Canada immensely .

We are here in Canada, with its breathtaking beauty, concern for others, and pride in its diversity.

NRT – article : Oversight or Incompetenacy

The following article was published in the local newspaper – North Renfrew times (NRT) – on Wednesday   24   May 2017

 Oversight or   Incompetenacy

Near Surface Disposal Facility (NSDF)   – proposed by CNL   – extension of time for public comment.

So the time period for submission of public comments on the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) has now been extended to who knows what date. Initially it was to be by deadline of 17 May 2017.

The EIS document is submitted for approval to Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC ) by Golders Associates — on behalf of the Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) – for the development of a Near Surface Disposal Facility (NSDF) at Chalk River Laboratories site.

I have had already made my submission of comments (electronically) on the draft EIS document some time back – keeping within the initial deadline announced.

As I understand that this extension period is required due to the need for having the draft EIS document translated into our second Canadian official language (French) – and not because of the request made by the Deep River Council or area citizens for such an extension.

A revised notice will be issued once the translated version of the EIS is available, and CNSC will provide further details on the dates of the public comment period.

Okay – so that is understandable that the document needs to be in both official languages but what is not comprehended is as to why the CNSC did not know about this need at the beginning. It is a simple rule – known by the Canadian   establishment for a long time.   Does it indicate some gap in competency of our Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC)? or was it just an oversight! and not a fumble by the CNSC.

Thus it may pose a question !!   If the CNSC cannot carry out this simple administrative requirement (of having the document in our two official languages) at an early stage   of the process – how to get confidence/assurance  that the Regulatory Body will have professional ability and competence to look at myriad of complex technical, societal and environmental issues related to the development of such an important disposal facility.

While I am fully in favour, in principle, for the development of such a facility at the Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) site, it behooves on the Regulator to assure the public that the proposed development meets the   whole spectrum of safety requirements – and as reviewed by renowned/competent/professional experts.

The devil is in the details.
