FSNA advocacy – Database Spreadsheet listing local Service Providers

The following submission was made by me to the FSNA   (Federal Retirees Association) headoffice   during April 2019.   A   copy was   also sent to the Chair &   the Secretary of the local   FSNA Algonquin Valley Chapter .

Title:     Suggested Database Spreadsheet listing local Service Providers   for Senior Assistance /Support         – DRAFT

———————————-

22 April 2019

Hi   Jessica,

Suggested Database Spreadsheet listing local Service Providers   for Senior Assistance /Support         – DRAFT

Further to my e-mail of   16 April 2019 ,   please find below my ” outline ” thinking for    ” a Database for local service providers   ” for the use by the  prospective seniors 75 years or over —   living independently (single or couple) .   This would be more in line with provision of personal assistance/support .

The said Database can also be available for use by independently living   handicap individuals (or couples) of any age.

I am hoping that when using this Database for finding & using listed service providers,   the seniors will be financially supported by the Government (Federal or Provincial) either by tax rebate or direct reimbursement .

I am hoping that Federal Retirees Association (FSNA)   will support the suggested   concept – the details & format of which can be improved or modified . This sort of Database  provides dignity to Seniors   when they need assistance   and obtaining that without chasing help from neighbors or others.

Yes, we are Federal Retirees but   the concept would help all other retirees who sometimes are more financially challenged.

If FSNA support the concept —   I believe there is need for the following initiatives (which do encompass advocacy)   by (FSNA) .

These are:

1)  Concept   Coordinator

There is need for a coordinator for such a task.  I  request that FSNA establish a central coordinator for helping to generate/develop such a Database and then once finalized – the coordinator can oversee launch and   monitor proper use of such a Database.

2)   Develop a format for the Database.

Note:   I am enclosing (with this e-mail) my DRAFT version of such a format for your perusal.   You may note I have identified and included in my DRAFT format few common items of needs for consideration. I I believe that these ” items of needs” are essential for daily living by independent seniors   or handicap individuals.       I think   keeping the database simple and readily useable is essential.

Note:   I have reviewed   your   suggested databases  in your e-mail of     16 April 2019   –     ” 211 Ontario is another database of community and health-based services https://211ontario.ca/ ”  and also   the Champlain Health Line online directory that lists local health and social support services that fall within the eastern Ontario region, including Pembroke https://www.champlainhealthline.ca/listServices.aspx?id=10883

I   find that these are more like   ” Telephone Directory ” for some specific Health related   areas – useful for   certain search needs but not useful at all for daily living needs.

3)   Field Coordinator.

Need for identifying and appointing a Field Coordinator for each   area in a Canadian  province   – for canvassing and surveying from the seniors their needs and then to identify service providers and the details pertaining to their operation.     Brainstorming and interfacing with Seniors would help   to identify “Items of needs ” and also some good Service Providers that some Seniors may have already have used

Note: A Field Coordinator   may be appointed by a   Government body   – if FSNA advocacy is successful in promoting the said Database concept to a Government body   (say Ministry of Seniors) .

Note:     I take liberty to state that the Field Coordinator may not need to canvass and survey the seniors’ needs as the list generated and provided by me , I believe , is quite comprehensive   and for a start is adequate.   A sample survey in any one or couple of localities would confirm   the ” items of needs” list.       And furthermore , the list can always be upgraded as and when new needs come forth and are identified.

The primary responsibility of   the Field Coordinator would be to identify as many as feasible prospective service   providers ( including contact & other relevant details ) for each of the listed needs. This may require advertising in the local newspapers or on – line social media for seeking out such help for the seniors.

The content of an advertisement will require a professional look see and wording for mobilizing                                         ” community   minded ”     service providers.

4)   Advocacy

There is definitely a need   for Advocacy initiative by FSNA   for promoting the concept  to the Government (Federal and/or Provincial)  for   the Government to take over the project and/or   providing some financial support.  I understand that the Canadians now have a Ministry of Seniors.

Note   FYI :   Please note I am not forwarding this memo to the Ministry of Seniors   or any other Government   or political   officials.

5) An app

To investigate and promote a development of an app   ( for use on a computer/tablet ) or easy access/use by the relevant seniors or   handicap persons.

I hope the above is useful .

My apologies for a bit long-winded memo.

regards

RTC Reunion Gathering in Trinidad & Tobago (Trini) – 12 January to 21 January 2019

We   recently had a Royal Technical College   (Nairobi) reunion in Trinidad & Tobago – between 12 January and 21 January 2019.     The primary co-ordinator was Arun Buch ( curently 77 years old) – who lives in Trinidad and has a Civil Consultancy firm in Port of Spain.   He was assisted by Bhaskar Patel   (who lives in London, U.K), Vish Vaidya (who lives in Toronto, Canada) and others but also by his office staff.

Lots of photos were taken   by many and some were uploaded on-line by Amin Pattani .   The uploaded photos can be found   at LINK:

The link to the photos is: http://tinyurl.com/RTC-Reunion-2019

Recently I wrote a dissertation   on   the memories of the trip.

This is what I wrote to all participants of the Reunion -while enclosing my dissertation .

————–

As time passes and we get busy with our own families and grandchildren along with local colleagues and friends, the   RTC Reunion in Trinidad and Tobago will start taking back stage.

Further as we are aging over the years the memories will fade . So   these photos ( put on line )   by Amin become precious for jogging our memories whenever a need arises.

Many thanks   to Amin and also to our many photographers for such a wonderful job.

Recently my wife Jackie and I went through the whole album and enjoyed the happy memories of good times that we had in Trini.

I have written a short ( or long) dissertation about the wonderful memories of Trini and the good thoughts that go through my mind.

I would like to share that with you all and hopefully you will like it.

Please find it attached FYI.

RTC   Reunion Gathering in Trinidad & Tobago (Trini)  Photos/Videos

– 12 January to 21 January 2019

Thanks for all the photos and videos from Trinidad & Tobago RTC Reunion gathering.

What Giovanna, Vish, Ed, Pramod, Pam, Naseem , Amin and others accomplished in recording events by way of   photos & videos is very touching and useful.   Thanks guys . These supplement our own personal photos/videos for the good memories.

The photos/videos provide means for enhancing our memories of good times that we have had together in Trini.    Memories fade as time passes or as we grow older but these photos/videos help to revive these memories.

Recently my wife Jackie and I spent a good hour going through the photos and videos – which kind of led me to think of many happenings for which we do not have real photos/videos – though these happenings are etched in our hearts.

While photos are ideal – they really are an assist to our own personal memories embedded within our own hearts.   The photos and videos embedded within our heart will always be with   us – no matter where we go or what our condition may be.

There are also some actual mementos that we received/got while in Trini – which also provide another prop for remembering our exhilarating visit.

These mementos can be listed   as below:

a)   A nice well designed Calendar to commemorate our visit   – with birthday of each participant shown at specific date on the calendar.   So much foresight and work has gone into producing this . Kudos to the smart team.

b) A T-shirt   –   with enchanting Bollywood singsong line . The most male colleagues wore this, with    pride, at one time or another   when visiting places in Trini.

c) A shawl and a scarf (with wild life depicted on it ).  All useful for daily use in our lives.  A   mental video  —   of these being distributed by Bhaskar and Vidula on the first evening on the Hotel Hilton terrace —   is still playing in my heart.

Note: Unfortunately we do not have for future memory any photos/videos showing these mementos.

Memories in my heart

I will give a few example of such wonderful memories in my heart – I am sure each one has his/her own.

1) We were pleasantly surprised for various types   of Indian snacks  which got distributed with love on ferry, at airport or beaches etc.    Vidula, Bhaskar and others – I believe all of them from UK – magically conjure up these goodies at all times – especially when we needed something to bite on.   What a pleasant surprise at all times.

2) Our Colleagues working hard to make all events wonderful. One can see Ed or Vish or others carrying rucksack   stuffed with mike equipment and also lap top computers etc with them wherever we went . And with a smile.

3) Professorial Bus Driver – who gave us very nice account of Trinidad  & Tobago  and fielded questions so easily and well responded.

4)  I was really impressed with the pleasant park lady officer at the Pigeon Point Heritage Park — who when discovered that Arun is a local and senior   — smilingly refunded money to Arun for entry to the beach – without being asked.   What honesty!

5) The walking back to Hilton Hotel from Thai Restaurant.   Late   at night.   It was so invigorating – and we found that it was not so far – Vish knowing the short route.

6)  Oh! the clear sky full of stars and moon – we can see the twinkling stars without having to pull our hoods to protect ourselves from environment.   Such rarity in our lives these days – specially living in cold country Canada .

7) Our conversations with each other – the exchange of life experiences and other warm stories .

Arun Buch with his heartwarming stories of how he had met three (3) great men of the era -Mahatma Gandhi, Mandela and Dalai Lama at different stages of his growth.

8) Late night group gatherings and chit chat with jokes and laughter.

9)    ” My God is awesome ” – an inscription on one of our buses.  So spiritual !   I hope you guys had noticed that.

10)   Fabulous breakfast at both hotels. The omelet chef(s) – so friendly and always with a   smile.

11) For us – that is my wife who is allergic to milk products – we found at both hotels – they had alternative   most times. That was very satisfying to us as it took away our concern .

12)   What we saw and observed – freedom. Men & women together & equal working for the good of the country.

13) Lack of people on both the islands ( Trinidad & Tobago).

14) When we arrived at Piarco Airport (Port of Spain)  on 12 January at 3.30 pm – busses were there to pick us up with Arun & Bhaskar also there. So much care . Promptness was seen all the time .

15) Excellent quality tap water , clean washroom facilities and general cleanliness   – what a pleasant relaxed environment.

16)   We travelled by Caribbean Airlines from Toronto – excellent service – Wheel chair support with smile and added care & concern.

17) Associated with T & T gathering – is the 6 hr drive to Toronto – January cold cold winter weather   & again driving back to Deep River (6 hours) – all during winter time. Luckily for me – the weather both times was somewhat  conducive   – did not have any storm or heavy now fall . What a break! This driving will always remain the high point – for making the trip successful.

18)  Charity – Thanks to Arun Buch & team – for juggling up some spare cash for donating to a Charity in Trinidad.     What a majestic and   satisfying  end.

Miracles of Christmas ( celebrating Christmas 2018 )

This article   was written to celebrate Christmas 2018. It has been circulated widely ( by e-mail) to many of friends and colleagues . Also it has been sent to local newspaper (North Renfrew Times) for publication.

Miracles of Christmas   ( celebrating Christmas 2018 )

With   winter setting in and snow in our backyard it seems that the Christmas is around the corner . With all the Christmas movies on Television, lights and decorations around the town , we are   looking forward to welcome the Santa Clause and enjoy the warmth of his jingle, laughter and joy.

Christmas is coming, with all its frippery and solemnity, its tinsel and hymns.   Our heart is in rhythm with the environment with warmth for our neighbors, colleagues , family and friends.

Christmas bestows magical touch   to our hearts. The celebration of Christmas has gone   global. It has jumped the Christian boundary and have penetrated in all cultures and societies the world over.   The image of Santa Clause delivering   gifts of toys to the kids around the world has mesmerized all.

We all enjoy the festivities and celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ on this earth.   He was a   personification of divine attributes that lie underlain in a human soul. This coming of Jesus was heralded and anointed by the three wise men from the East . The history of his struggles and ultimate crucifixion is well known and recited many times by his followers and others.

Lord Jesus’ message of   Love Thy Neighbors , Turn your other cheek,   Be warm and compassionate to all, Forgive   yourself and also your enemies   are time-tested messages which , if followed genuinely, can bring all nearer to Godly experience.

Christmas   brings out stories of   miracles experienced in daily lives of faithful . Miracles happen when true and genuine faith is observed   and then trusting Lord to do the helping as and where required.

One can read   “on line ” stories of miracles at Christmas time   –   which are told and described with care and true belief.  Reader’s Digest published in December 2017 issue   some   of these true stories about Christmas miracles from readers   that little details can turn an ordinary Christmas into a cherished   memory.

LINK: https://www.rd.com/true-stories/inspiring/christmas-miracles-true-stories/

I am sure that many of us have   personal story of miracles in our lives and most miracles happen around auspicious time like Christmas.

Remembering the miracles of Christmas is a great way to retain a sense of childlike wonder as we seek to keep the Lord at the center of it all.

On a larger world view   – we see miracles all around us. To my mind, the change of seasons, rising of the sun and moon,   gardens and living creatures all around us   under different conditions/circumstances is a   portrayal of miracles .

If we open our eyes , we can see miracles  affecting our community here in Deep River every day   –   a well run small town with excellent water supply, road systems, garbage collection , Police and Emergency Services etc. These  are well   organized and maintained. We have a fine   hospital, and many recreational activities . The most miraculous happening is excellent volunteering   by town’s citizens for myriad and varied activities.

I am always in wonderment when   I see dedication, commitment, education and training of many coaches of various activities in the Town  – who spend their time with smile to teach, coach and pass on their knowledge to our young and upcoming generation. Long days and week-ends are accepted with care and dedication.

These coaches/teachers are an embodiment of miracles especially when I see such joy and smile on our grandkids’   faces. Day in and day out.

In a broader sense , I have also noted an interesting miracle (sort of) at our Deep River Bridge Club.   Since I started playing in 2007, I have seen transformation in partnerships. There are now many couples who play as partners – a symbol of   love and respect. Of course , friendships are also   developed but when one sees a couple playing together as partners with cool and calmness – it is definitely bordering on a miracle.

The heart is thrilled and joyous that on the eve of 2018 Christmas, we have   some positive news items . The ” ground breaking ” ceremony   was held recently for a New Apartment Development right in the center of the Deep River town.   It seems contract agreement has been tentatively reached between the employer and professional employees at the Chalk River Laboratories. These news items infuse stability in our lives .     Christmas miracles !!

My wife (Jackie Shah) and I wish you all a life full of happy miracles.

Merry Christmas to you and your family . We also wish you all a very Happy Holiday and a successful New Year.

Diwali 2018 – Renfrew County

The following is the little note   i wrote and circulated to all members of the Renfrew County Indian Community via deepem@googlegroups.com .

Dear friends ,

Diwali 2018 – Renfrew County

The auspicious Diwali party time arrived with a bang on Saturday 03 November 2018.

The Lions Hall in Chalk River was abuzz with laughter, hugs and shakes of hands between friends and also with strangers (most of who have recently arrived and settled down in Renfrew County).

The old mix of professionals have now transformed into mix of professionals and business community members. What a change we have seen in recent years !  We have now seen rejuvenation of the community with young families and many kids amongst us.   This brings excitement and energetic participation in the entertainment programs .

I was also pleasantly surprised to see many non-Indian friends of our community members joining us in this festival of Lights – celebrating  victory of good over evil.  We enjoy freedom, openness and dignity which behooves us to care for our friends and neighbors  and respect for others’ culture and traditions.  It is the premise on which our community survives.  In this country (where we have settled ) there is much camaraderie and equality and it is important that we respect these virtues .   Let us  welcome participation of many of our friends from the larger Canadian Society.

I being a senior and inching towards the ultimate goal , I found the cheers and just playfulness of many of our youngsters – from babies to teenagers to young adults in our Indian garbs at the Diwali party – to be  very enervating . The dances (individual and group) were varied from young kids to adults.  The dances really brought to the fore our cultural diversity with harmonious interplay. This enjoyment of our heritage  brings delight to my old soul and it definitely identified the colorful garden that is the Canadian society of which we have become one type of flowers amongst many others.  May we spread a scent so pleasing to all and sundry in our society.

What is heart pleasing is the selfless effort by many of our volunteers who devoted time and effort to make this party to become a successful and memorable event. Without these volunteers, the function could not have occurred . So I would like to congratulate all the volunteers for their devotion.   I am rather leaving out names as there are many of you who volunteered cheerfully.

However I would be remiss not to mention and thank my dear friend Ken Philipose and his wife Leela – who have taken initiative not only this year but also previous years to provide impetus and leadership to keep this cultural activity alive amongst our community in Renfrew County. This adds a flavour to ” Unity In Diversity”   in the society.  I am sure , hopefully others are stepping in the responsibility.

Happy Diwali to all and my wife Jackie Shah and I wish you all a very successful New Year . We  pray for the immense growth and progress of our community as part of the larger Canadian Community.

Democarcy at work

I wrote this article on the eve of Municipal Election of 2018 in Deep River.

The article has been forwarded to local newspaper for publication (on 16 Sept 2018)

Democracy at work

Deep River is all excited about the upcoming Municipal election. We have many candidates for Mayor and Council . Also for the Reeve position. It is really very heartwarming that we have a diverse group of people offering their time and effort for the good of the town.

There is proliferation of meetings , signposts and pamphlets . The whole town is now decorated with these signposts – some small, some large and all of different colors and height. It adds an ambience to the town.

Our democracy is very transparent and without impact of wealth or power of an individual. What is needed is a genuine commitment for serving the public . Yes, the candidate needs to be polite , civil and have demonstrated genuine good work ethics.

Each candidate projects his or her vision for the future of the town and the method by which such vision will be attained. At least an effort will be made to achieve the stated vision in partnership with other elected members. As we have a democracy in action, any future will be molded with a majority of the Council members in sync. The elected Mayor really cannot dictate his/her views or vision .

Having listened to many candidates at various forums or in private conversation along with reading pamphlets from each candidate the following common objectives are surmised by me.

1) Most candidates seem to want

Ӣ the Town to have a great relation with CNL Рour largest employer

Ӣ to bring about growth of more diverse economic activities in the Town.

Ӣ definitive real housing development within our Town for different categories of people Рsenior, young and for those of lower income.

This has been an effort in the past for Economic Development but not much diversification has been seen . I think with new technology – it is believed some on-line businesses can be developed.

A focused tourism type business has a possibility . For example, an escorted holiday package can be developed – for city populations (Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal etc) when the Town can during summer offer boating, pontoon parties, swimming at our two beaches coupled with lessons for boating and fishing . In winter, the Town can offer actual cross country skiing, downhill skiing as well as coaching for such skiing . And in the evenings for entertainment at various times we have plays , orchestra , dances and other programs that can be developed. We also have Lawn Bowling, Card Games ( Bridge ), golf etc which can be weaved into the program. An genuine entrepreneur , I am sure can develop a good package -but will need cooperation and help from the Town . This can bring employment and income for many diverse group of people in the town .

Remember, there are so many newcomers in our country who require ” hand Holding – someone who can show/teach techniques ” for things like boating (and other river activities) , skiing, fishing, card playing etc.

2) Most candidates are genuinely concerned about high property taxes that we have in Deep River . This subject has been discussed and studied by previous councils but we have not seen any reduction in taxes.

Many feel that increase in population in the town will spread the tax burden and thus help in reduction. However, it seems many new employees by CNL or the Garrison wants to stay around Petawawa due to lower taxes there.

Note: Increase in population is feasible if new businesses are developed or attracted in the Town. So far instead , over last few years , we have seen closure of some of the existing businesses.

Many feel that we have Cadillac Police Service and Fire Department – these two services need fair amount of our taxes.

I am sure previous Council(s) have looked at these services and have come up against a wall for any major changes though some movement is noted.

May be an out-of- box type solution is necessary . What ? A restructuring of Municipal administration and/or restructuring current duties of Police and Fire personnel or how about offering Police Services to adjoining towns like Chalk River . Our Police Force is closer than OPP.

I believe the new Council will have their work cut out for this issue. For an out-of-box type solution , a focused leader with a penchant for success is necessary.

We are enchanted and excited by the process of our democracy, our genuine participation in our future and we are fortunate to have many good candidates to stand for election. This is a real democracy at work.

Only job remaining is for all of – each and every one of us – to understand the nuances and commitment of each candidate and go out on the voting day to vote for those we prefer.

Grandparents =2018

I have stopped writing about kids these days as it isnot possible to keep up with their daily activities.

Sikh Issues – my perspective

I wrote this article – completing on 16 March 2018 . This is in response to recent trip to India by our Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau and family – which resulted in discussion of Sikh issues in India and Canada.

I presume that the article is self-explanatory.

——————————————————————-

16 March 2018

Sikh Issues – my perspective

I   believe if we think coolly and   a bit carefully   about the Sikh issues I guess we   can discern the development of a community – over decades – the Sikhs   were spoilt by all Indians  with overarching admiration and attention.

If we go and sit back and recall in our own   life   experiences ( when we interfaced with many of our Sikh friends and colleagues )   each one of us had   a great admiration for these Sikh colleagues for their wit, humour and sacrifice for their friends and community around   – and this admiration was expressed volubly by many to their face.   This attitude by many of us spoilt some of these Sikhs – and then politically minded section used that to demand our attention/admiration/ along with   various bounties as an entitlement . One of my Sikh friends told me once that in India – many of these Sikhs when travelling on Indian trains would obtain a seat   (as you know in India for a long time travelling by train in India was a   challenge for seats and other amenities) forcefully by bullying especially the Hindus .   This is a small example as to how the Sikhs had stranglehold on Indian   polity and social life   which was prevalent in India – with the background of genuine admiration for the Sikh community as a whole.

Then came Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale in the 80s . In 1982 – he started a   movement   with an excuse for a larger share of irrigation water and the return of Chandigarh to Punjab – a very legitimate demand but such demand was pushed by use of arms and force.   A genuine demand turned into – my way or   I will take it by force. He and his armed men occupied the Golden Temple – for blackmail and threat to Indian Government’s responsibility. The rest is history .   It was clear that he was not supported by most of the Sikh population   – specially for his use of force.

Prime Minister Indira   Gandhi was assassinated by her two body   guards . This goes against the very Sikh (and Indian) values .  A person   (specially a guard) does not use violence against one’s own employer who puts  his/her faith in that person to safeguard him/her.   Besides a valourous  person (specially Sikhs) will never use sneaky violence against a woman. These Sikh bodyguards discarded their honour/principle which was maintained/nurtured   for   centuries fighting Moguls and Muslims.

The morals lost   forever within the Sikh Community .

The effect of this   departure from this principled norm can be seen and experienced many times since this incident. One hear about some Sikhs using violence within the Gurudwaras, against their wives and even against their own mothers. You just have to keep your eyes/ears open and listen to news for incidents like this.   The Sikh culture has been somewhat compromised and anything goes is becoming a new norm   for some of these Sikhs.

Fortunately most Sikhs are upright people and they are not contaminated by such behaviour

Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was a very respected/revered prime minister of India   for taking Pakistan head-on and helping East Pakistan to separate and become an independent nation ( BanglaDesh )   She also stood up against the mayhem created by   Bhindranwale in Punjab.   Her  assassination resulted in a spontaneous backlash   (as claimed by some in India). Throngs of masses ran rampage killing many Sikhs in New Delhi  – even their neighbors   and colleagues.  This also spread in some other parts of India .   It seems some people found an excuse and took advantage for personal gains or revenge.   This spontaneity is not   recognized/acknowledged  by many disgruntled Sikhs and specially those who lost   their loved ones .

Also lack of   speedy corrective action (     or perceived slow action ) by the authorities led to charge (by some Sikhs and Human Rights activists) of    deliberate vengeance style killing of many innocent Sikhs . This is the root of continuing simmering feeling of gross injustice to the Sikhs.   It is terrible and hurting if one feels betrayed by their own   Government   and friends and neighbors .  Even after so many years (some 30 years plus ) no   acceptable action to bring the perpetrators ( or their perceived leaders) to justice by   Authorities  is noted.

So the aftermath of this mass killing   (and resulting frustration in Sikh Community) was felt in Canada when an Air India Flight 182 was sabotaged (with a bomb ).   The Flight ( Emperor Kanishka ) operating on the Toronto-Montreal-London-Delhi was destroyed by a bomb at an altitude of 31,000 feet (9,400  m)   on 23 June 1985,. It crashed into the Atlantic Ocean while in Irish airspace. A total of 329 people were killed, including 268 Canadian citizens, 27 British citizens and 24 Indian citizens.   Most Canadian citizens were of Indian origin   – who were initially referred to as Indian citizens by the then Canadian Government .

One of my friends lost his whole family – very talented family . I was shocked -so were many others . We were also   shocked that the Canadian Government has missed identifying these as Canadian Citizens . Fortunately I was the President of Jain Society (in Toronto   at that time) and I got an opportunity (along with others) to be interviewed by the CBC radio.   I brought this anomaly in identifying the lost persons as Indian Citizens (instead of them being Canadian Citizens) by the then Canadian Prime Minister and my speech remained/repeated   on CBC radio   for at least a couple of days.   This anomaly was finally corrected by the Canadian Government . I am glad for my small contribution to the conversation at that time.

What bugs me most that the RCMP and other Canadian Government Authorities seem to have botched the investigations, trial and punishment of the Sikh terrorists   who planned blowing up a plane.   It seems that there was some cover-up  and softness towards the perpetrators.     At that time, most western Governments were not in favour of India (as it was   wrongly considered pro-Russia – India just being non-aligned ) and Pakistan’s star was high above.   Any mischief to India was sort of acceptable – specially by Britain and USA and thus it includes Canada.

In the mean time the Sikh Community has built itself in Canada numerically, economically and in recent years politically.   Some of these Sikhs (the pro-Khalistan activists) have   remained aloof from normal Indian socials and advancement . They celebrate their Diwali at the Canadian Parliament Building as a separate event . They join by in mass numbers the main political parties of Canada and thus influence the election of political leaders . They also   contribute money liberally for campaigning elections .   In British Columbia and Brampton (Toronto, Ontario) , they have numbers for putting forward political candidates besides supporting other Canadian candidates.

Some of these people are committed and dedicated to developing their own history separate from India history . It is fortunate that most Sikhs in India (as well as in Diaspora)   do not subscribe to this fallacy. All these parades and glorifying known terrorists and killers in Canada is having   a mixed reaction. Only now after recent trip by Prime Minster Trudeau visit to India , the local Canadians and the political class is   recognizing   the danger in supporting such parades and dialogues.   It also   works against Canada’s interest now that India is becoming economically sound and a major developing country with about   3 trillion dollar economy.  Hopefully, the 1984 episode is resolved properly in India   and justice is delivered.   Besides Sikhs here in Canada cannot forever be embroiled themselves in issues in India – that is if Sikhs want to become   real Canadians and participate in the  Governments as political leaders.

For positive outcome ,   the Sikhs should concentrate in the well-being of Canada , all its citizens   and cannot harbour silent animosity towards innocent   Indians either in Canada or India or for that matter anywhere in the world.   Sikhs in India have moved forward and they are as usual most model citizens of India.

I believe that Sikhs have their work cut out for them if they want to pursue the cause of Sikhs either in Canada or elsewhere -including India.  Their roots will always be in India as most Sikhs’ spiritual bond is centered around Golden Temple in Amritsar in Punjab, India .    Though they have some historical places in Pakistan too.

The Sikhs who want to be active in pursuing acceptance and justice and a homeland should take a different tack -which is positive and helpful in making Sikhs model world citizens. By keeping external attire similar to many known Islamist terrorists ( with long flowing beards and frown on their faces ) only complicates their task.   I understand that said Sikh attire with colorful turban is a required necessity for their religious and spiritual identity – and so be it . But if this is associated with violent behaviour at home or in Gurudwaras or against innocent individuals   (even sporadic) do cause   a concern as to their attitude.

I believe those Sikhs who are so much active in the Community fighting for   justice for their cause should pose and note that many of us are supportive of their demand and looking for resolution of such incident.   However what I skim in various cases in India – from Bhopal Disaster and other atrocities, rapes and frauds   – in many cases the justice is delayed, denied or compromised from negligence or deliberate manipulating by powers to be .  Only way forward is to strengthen the democracy and many institutions of democracy in India. Which incidentally cannot be achieved by violent means – specially by running protests in Canada with display of photos of known killers of Canadian Citizens  . Many   Indians are active in India for such   an outcome .

Our Canadian Sikhs   or those Sikhs who are residing in the Diaspora can help achieve their objective of justice and respect in India by being themselves of higher morals and desist from any violent vengeance type activities.   They can establish a friendlier relations with other overseas Indians – individually and collectively – which will bring eventual better results.

The Diaspora Sikhs can use their knowledge and wealth and positive attitude to help solve many of Punjab’s social and economical woes.   Punjab is supposed to be number 1 province of India but have squandered its development possibilities by politics tied to religious happenings.

There is the issue of use of drugs in Punjab – drugs being smuggled from Pakistan . These smugglers have become a kind of conduits for traitorous activities against the security of the country.   Overseas Sikhs can provide  relevant technical, medical and educational support to stem the drug use amongst Punjab’s young population .     In the process , the overseas Sikhs can encourage peace movement between India and Pakistan.

If we look around here in Canada or USA or UK   , we see hard working Sikhs in all fields which include Industry and construction   (real estate) and have been very successful – and that is why they can support financially many of the political parties at in one way or another. This acumen is very useful and necessary for the industrial development of   Punjab and other parts of India .   Why can The Sikhs take up the call like Jews who developed Israel .

My final thoughts   turn to what I call moral downgrade in some of our Canadian Punjabi youths   (men)   -who go to India for marriage – get a dowry   and then leave the girls there abandoned and return to Canada – with loot of dowry in their pocket. These type of incidents have been reported in the press – why these so-called Sikh leaders in Canada do not take steps to stem such behavior. May be they have done it but I have not heard/read about any such activity.

Finally winning the world for Sikh nation is an admirable yearning but first of all the violent arrogant attitude need   to be removed -even though the Sikhs are a   martial race – only by recognizing that the flowering of the Sikh Community has come about by sacrifice of many Hindu families over hundreds of years   when many Hindus have   had  offered/sacrificed   their first born towards the Sikh growth
