Grandparents – 2015- 2nd Quarter

Thursday   02 April 2015

This day the kids travelled to Toronto by car.   They will be visiting their cousins Maya and Kieran (along with their SunirMama and ShannonMami)   .

There was   a good news from Toronto –   a telephone call from Sunir/Shannon   that Shannon has been selected for a position as   a Developmental Pediatrician in Oshawa – probably to start work in August.

Sunday 05 April 2015

Kieran’s dad   sent an e-mail (titled:   Surprise on Facebook) with a message :

” Hey mom, dad,       I posted a video on my Facebook newsfeed. I think you”™ll enjoy it. 🙂 “Lo behold ! – the video   showed Kieran walking on his own – encouraged by his NinaFoi ( Nina Auntie) on on eside and his mom on the other side – looking after his safety when he attempts to walk.

This is a milestone for Kieran in   his life ( 1 year and about 3 weeks old ).

Also on this date   (Sunday 05 April 2015) , Shannon sent an e-mail with a title   :   ” Happy Easter ” with a message :       ”   Here are some photos of the cousins having fun together. We miss you, Ba and Bapuji! ”

The three photos enclosed with e-mail is showing all four cousins ( Sitara, Sachin , Maya and Kieran) are having a marvellous time together since the day Sitara and Sachin have travelled to Toronto   (see above).

Monday   06 April 2015

The kids travelled to a resort in Jamaica with their parents .   The holidays was from Monday 06 April 2015   to Thursday 16 April 2015 .   They returned back to Toronto on 16 April – spent a night there and then returned to Mackey on Friday 17 April.

They had their holidays at Grand Bahia Principe Jamaica –  an All Inclusive Resort .

The resort has 3 fantastic interconnected lake-style pools, surrounding the resort, with 2 sections for children. In unparalleled surroundings, amid tropical gardens and recliners with umbrellas for you to relax.

The resort is   located at Runaway Bay in a privileged location on the north coast of Jamaica.

The following messages were received from the kids by e-mail when they were at the resort.

The messages were related – in a way – to nana’s 75th birthday – and they were not here in Deep River but away at a resort.

On April 14 – Sachin’s message:

”   Hi Nana how are you. What are you doing right now? have you been having a good time without Us? have a nice time. See you soon. I love you.

Sachin   “

On April 14 – Sitara’s message

” hi Nana can you Read me a story when we get home. I will bring you back seashelld. Can you give bear bear hug and talking at night? he is in my room. bye bye.

Sitara “
It was fantastic that kids think about their nana -when at a resort.
By the way while they were away to the resort – North Renfrew Times published (in its   Wednesday 8th April edition) a Sitara’s photo obtaining her CanSkate medal at the Deep River Arena. And the photo came on the day nana’s birthday was –   8th April.
FRiday 17 April 2015
Kids returned to Mackey – driven by their parents from Toronto . They were all exhausted but also relaxed having enjoyed both   :-   the visit   to Toronto ( to play with Maya and Kieran and their Mama & Mami ) and a respite from winter of Canada at the Jamaican resort – in sun and at the beach.
Saturday   18 April 2015
Both Sitara and Sachin (along with their parents) visited their nana/nani in Deep River – prior   to going for “pasta’ dinner at the Deep River Legion .
They now have a new routine – when going to school   – they are being dropped at nana/nani home in the morning (at about 8.00 am) by their dad   (on his way to his work in Deep River) . They have their breakfast at nana/nani home   and then little bit of play/relax time with nana/nani and then they are dropped off to school just after (9.000 am) in nana/nnai maroon Chysler minivan. They get picked by from school by their mom   – ( their mom works on a Locum basis as a pharmacist   – at different locations in the area).
Thursday 23 April 2015   to   Sunday 26 April 2015
This weekend nana/nani went to The Briars at Jackson’s Point ( Ontario) for a bridge session with Barbara Seagram — she is a great taecher for bridge lessons .
Initially (on Thursday) , the grandparents went to Toronto – to be with Maya and Kieran (and of course with their parents) for a night . This was convenient for them as the Briars (on Lake Simcoe)   was only one hour drive from Toronto home .   Both Maya and Kieran were excited to see their Ba/Bapuji when they came home from their   DayCare Center in the evening.   There was quite a cheerful welcome and then after dinner some time to play .   On Friday morning, both maya and Kieran had breakfast along with their mom and Ba/Bapuji .   Maya was a bit disappointed that Ba/Bapuji were there in Toronto for a short time – she wanted them to stay longer.   Both kids gots lots of hugs and cuddling before they were walked to their Daycare by their dad.
Kieran being now one (1) year and a one (1) month old;   he is into the parallel adventures of learning to walk and talk.     A great time for enjoyment and fun by his   parents and grandparents
On Sunday 26 April 2015 nana/nani returned back from the Briars – and stopped over at Mackey prior to getting back to Deep River. Both Sitara and Sachin were excited to see their nana/nani.   Sachin played with his nani – hide and seek   and Sitara involved nana to dress up her   ” Disney princess ”   making   the pieces of the dress from playdough .   She is very focussed and knows how to use tools for playdough.
Over the last week of April and beginning of May, both Sitara and Sachin came over to nana/nani home several times . Always cheerful and wanting to come over. Sitara gets into the orbit of play and would want her nana to join   her   orbit – she really wants to play with her nana – this being her objective. She makes nana to join in her oregami   or any othert game . Also reading her with her Archie comic books   – she reads her own and wants nana to read his own   or sometimes she wants nana to read her an episode from the   Archie comic .
Thursday 30 April 2015
This day kids’ mom called to inform that they (kids) were being recognised   along with other kids-   at their school for having ” persevarnce and initiative “.   So both nana/nani went over to school in the afterrnoon ( the program was to start in the Childs’ Auditorium at 2.30 pm) to enjoy and be proud for the kids’s recognition .
The recognition was announced by the M/C ( a young student ) with photos of groups of students in each class who received the recognition.
Congratulations!   Sitara
Congratulations!   Sachin
Saturday 02 May 2015
This was a beautiful Spring day – very nice and bright.
Kids   participated at the Mackenzie pool in the   2015 Candu Swim-A-Thon to raise funds . For that they had to get to the pool by 8.00 am – so they and their parents had to wake up early on Saturday morning, get ready and drive from Mackey to Deep River.
Nani went to the Pool to cheer them up ( however nana stayed home ).
Sitara did 41 long laps   and Sachin did 37 long laps

——————-

After the Swim-A-Thon and having had their pancake brunch – all came to nana/nani home . Both kids were wanting to play   outdoors .   Nana played with them   – when their parents went in the house to be with their nani .
Initially kids wanted to be hauled around in the blue   wheelbarrow that nana has in the   backyard .   So nana let both kids get into the wheelbarrow ( after putting a cushon in it) and   pulled thme   for abit but it got heavy -so the kids took turns   – one   at a time.   Nana hauled Sachin upto   a tall tree at the far end of the park   – which is behind nana/nani home – behind the backyard.     Both kids   climbed the tree   (one at a time) – it was not so difficult and posed for photograph.
After that Sitara hopped onto the wheelbarrow – and all went along the jungle path and onto the Faraday road and from there onto the Rutherford Av. – all the way nana hauling the wheelbarrow. Sachin was walking besides   – playing with   ” this and that “.       What a sight – to onlookers on the road. It was fun -for nana and for kids on a bright spring day.
After that kids wanted to go to another park where the Town has installed kids’ play things (like swings, slides etc.)   Kids knew which park/playground they   wanted to go   – the playground which was beyond the WoodWorking shop/building on the other side of Ridge Road. So all three trundled up to that playground . Kids had lots of fun but nana had to shorten that as it was coming to lunch time   – and beyond the threshold of nana’s sugar level control point.
After lunch, kids played (for practice) badminton at the backyard with nana and their mom. Also Sitara   noticed a larvae   – so she picked it up and tried to provide necessary warmth and feed for it to grow. Now her nani is keeping a watch – the larvae beautiful ly tucked away (covered by) under a glass salad bowl – on the stool outdoors at front patio.
Friday 15 May 2015
Both nana/nani went To Mackey in the afternoon – to spend time with kids . They had a   free day from school – teachers Professional Development day.
Both Sitara and Sachin were busy with their legos – building structures etc. Sitara developed a           2 -story building -each floor having at least 4 rooms and all rooms well furnished.     Sachin came to help nana outdoors to broom clear the deck (patio) surrounding the house and the path in front of the house.
After their dad came home from work – all had dinner together and adults managed to squeeze in a game of ” Chokdi” for half an hour or so.
Earlier their mom had lamented on her Facebook posting at 11.46 am

” Missing the fact that the kids don’t have a neighborhood full of kids they can play with on days like these ”       – This is what is the reality when   someone decides to stay away from Town and in thecountry.

———–

Well the kids in Toronto – Maya and Kieran seem to enjoy the onset of spring – playing outdoors   together .

They play and have fun evening at the water table ( toy set set up by their parents at the backyard ) and go to the park in the neighborhood etc.

Tuesday 19 May 2015

Ba/Bapuji arrived in Toronto ( in their 2001 Dodge minivan) at about 4.00 pm.

Note: This was despite the incident which happened the day   before (on Monday – Victoria day ) when   a stone flew over and hit the front windshield of the Dodge Minivan when Bapuji was going to Pembroke to play Bridge Duplicate. Luckily – no impact on the integrity of the van or the driver.

When Maya and Kieran were brought home by their mom from their daycare (on Melrose road) – they were surprised . Shannon was happy to see the grandparents, She would welcome company as Kids’ dad had gone to USA ( on business) starting yesterday .   He was to be gone until Friday (22 May 2015).

The Victoria Day weekend – the kids and parents all spent at the cottage on Simcoe Lake   – owned by their Toronto grandparents. They had returned back from the cottage on Victoria Day (on Monday 18 May 2015) .

Ba/Bapuji reestablished their acquintance with kids – as it was only about a month ago they had been together.     Kieran walks a lot though still likes to crawl. His walk is very measured but has a “Charlie Chaplin” style.

In the evening after dinner, kid’s mom had to go out to a meeting – so the kids were looked after by their Ba/Bapuji for about an hour and a half.   Both kids were very pleasing and played well with their Ba/Bapuji . Kieran was   tucked to sleep by his Ba and then Maya too.

Wednesday 20 May 2015

The kids were taken to The dayCare in the morning by their mom – after breakfast with Ba/Bapuji . Ba/Bapuji spent the afternoon going to play Duplicate Bridge at a club on GlenPark Av. ( from Bathurst Street) . In the evening   – the kids came home with their mom . All had   a great time playing and coddling.

Kieran liked his musical   ” turtle” toy   and Maya enjoyed her Frozen puzzle – brought by their Ba/Bapuji.

Both Thursday and Friday – the kids were taken to the daycare by their Ba/Bapuji – as their mom had to go to other places (for her work) and needed to use the subway rather than the Subaru car .

On Thursday, Ba/Bapuji spent time roaming on the Yonge Street and visiting the LIbrary .

Also Ba completed her project of sewing a nice   “Cape ” for Maya to wear. Maya likes wearing different types of cape all the time. This was made from silk maroon saree material with a silver border ( some 12 inches deep)   . Maya loved it and kept wearing it all the time – even when going to the DayCare.

On Friday   afternoon, they went to play Duplicate bridge at Hazel’s Brideg Club located at Center Point Mall (on Young Street – further north in North York) .

Their dad arrived from USA in the evening at about 9.00 pm – when the kids were already sleeping.

Saturday 23 May 2015

Maya went for swimming with her dad . This was her mom’s birthday – so all said Happy Birthday to her. Maya had made a very nice (and large)   card to wish her mom a Happy Birthday.

In the evening , after kids went to sleep, the parents went out for dinner – to celebrate the birthday.

Kieran spent time playing with all and having his naps in-between

On Sunday 24 May 2015 , Maya went for her soccer game   -taken there by her mom.

In the afternoon, there was a Birthday Party organised ( between 3.30 pm and 5.30 pm) . Shannon parents joined in the party and also by her sister Heather, her Husband (Ryan) and kid’s baby nephew (Cole) . It was   a good party and everyone   enjoyed the cake that Ba/Bapuji had ordered earlier from Metro .

In the evening after the Birthday party , the parents and kids went to a neighborhood party   .

Monday 25 May 2015

This is the day Ba/Bapuji returned back to Deep River – after the kids were dropped to the daycare by their mom.

_____

Sunday 24   May 2015

This weekend was exciting for the kids in Mackey – the whole family had gone to Ottawa   to participate in a Marathon.     All were properly dressed – in the Marathon jerseys and labels .

Sunjay completed the whole 22 km Marathon and got recognition medal and Congratulations for that .

Both Sitara and Sachin also participated (along with their mom) – with a walk of 2 km ( a sort of for family range) – all got medals and recognition for the effort.

Thursday   28 May 2015

This was the day for Shannon’s graduation ( first ) ceremony   – and wow both kids (Maya and Kieren ) attended the function along with their dad.   The ceremony was in the evening.

Friday 29 May 2015

Sitara was participating in two group songs at her school . The event was in the afternoon                           ( starting at 2.30 pm at the Childs Auditorium)   and both nana/nani went to enjoy the songs. Sitara’s parents had also come . Sachin was also there along with his class.

Sitara was lively and participated with great vigour and attention.

Saturday 05 June 2015

Sachin joined his mom & nana/nani to a Bible concert by Watoto Group at the local church (Real Hope Christian Assembly Church on Hwy 17) . The Watoto Group is a collection of childen from Uganda who had been orphaned etc. and rescued by a Christian denominational missionary in Uganda.   The African kids sang beautiful hymes and songs praising Jesus Christ . Though we are not Christians by faith   – this demonstration of zeal and making life useful was educational; to Sachin and other younger kids.   It was rather unfortunare that Sitara could not go as she had fallen sick all through the previous night. Sachin was sick on Friday but managed to recover a bit by the time the Concert was on.

Note:   Currently, Watoto cares for almost 4,000 children. To date, a couple of hundreds of  these have come full circle through the program and are now productive citizens. They have been given back the potential to fulfill their dreams.   Watoto is also more than just a choir, as each of the childen has suffered the loss of on eor both of their parents.

They were rescued as orphans by social workers, nurtured and cared for by loving moms, educated by teachers, healed physically and emotionally by caring doctors and counsellors, spiritually discipled by pastors, and supported by generous sponsors and friends from around the world. It took a community to raise each one of these children.

Fridaay 12 June 2015

This day was frantic one.       Nana/nani were busy in the morning having a contractor to trim the trees in the front and back of the Deep River home, part of fence in the front and fence gate at the back were either replaced or mended. A concrete pavement (on the side of thebuilding) was expanded in width.

It was joyous day as Kieran became 15 months old .

Sitara participated at the school ( Childs Auditoriuom at Machenzie Community School)   in an instrument playing concert . Both nana/nani went to witness Sitara’s participation . Also her parents were there.   Sachin’s class was also present.

In the evening at 5.00 pm Sachin’s parenst along with parents of other KG class kids had organised a graduation event for the KG kids at the Deep River library 9 the indoor venue was necessary as weather was couldy and wet).   This is a non-official graduation celebration.

Parents had prepared a good program with all the paraphernelia ( like graduation hats , song/pledge   etc) And a feast was had by all prsent afterwards.

Friday 26 June 2015

This previous week had been the last week for Sitara and Sachin to participate in 2015 soccer games at Grouse Park in Deep River.

Also on Friday they   had   ” Friday night picnics at the Waterfront and Library Night! Woo hoo!   ”     Thatw ould be in deep River .Their mom’s Facebook post announced

Friday 26 June 2015

It was   graduation week for our Toronto family .

Shannon posted on Friday (26 June ) the following on her Facebook page

It’s been a week of graduations in our family. I graduated from my Developmental Paediatrics fellowship on Tuesday and Maya graduated from preschool today. Hopefully the first of many graduations for her, and the last of many for me!

Note:   Maya will be going to Junior KG in September

Saturday 27 June 2015

Sitara and Sachin spent the day at Rolph AirStrip in Deep River – enjoying to know the small airplanes . They were entertained and shown inside of a plane by Zin and his son Thit.

Note : Zin has now moved to Hamilton and had been to Deep River as they   had just recently sold their home.   Thit had copme from Ottawa to be wioth his parents – Thit is the one who keeps the plane – though both Zin and Thit had pilot license.

————–

This is turning into a   busy 2015 summer and a happy one – though a bit pre- jinxed by “under the weather” by both me and wife.   Luckily doctors were consulted and anti-biotics were taken before Sunir and family arrived in Deep River -and all was okay .

Wednesday   01 July 2015

First Maya and Kieran came over from Toronto driven by their parents in their ”   Subaru Outback” car . They came on Wednesay just about at lunch time – the Canada Day ( July 01) – having spent the night at Huntsville at Shannon’s maternal grandma’s place .

They stayed till Sunday 5 July.

Canada Day turned out to be a whimper in Deep River due to adverse weather   but   Sitara and sachin along with their parents had a great Canada Day at Mackey – where the weather was just perfect.

However, both Sitara and Sachin came over to Deep River – to meet their Mama and Mami and to play with their cousins from Toronto.     All the kids had a great time together   – Kieran just going around walking all over and also climbing stairs   in the DR house. He also discovered many toys which were sprayed all around the house.

Ba ( for Maya and Kieran ) or nani (for Sitara and Sachin) did a Puja (along with the whole family) to Shree Jalaram – for welcoming the family get together in Deep River on this auspicious Canada Day   .

Maya and Sachin were playing together and Sitara ( now garduated over 7 years ) was all mushy with Kieran.

At the late evening all adults and Sitara/sachin went to Deep River campus to watch the fireworks – while both Maya and Kieran had gone to sleep watched over by their Ba/Bapuji.

Thursday   02 July 2015

Both Sitara and sachin came over from Mackey early in the morning ( dropped by their dad) – joined in the breakfast and after that they spent time playing with Maya and Kieran- and of course with their Mama and Mami.

All kids were taken to the DR Library ( by walking) by Sunir/Shannon – for a summer Library program ( for a duration of 3/4 hour) – though Kieran could not join due to his age ( just 1 year and 3 months) . However, Kieran joined his parents to a coffee at the Restaurant ( Bean House) in the centre of the town .

In the afternoon, Sachin had a soccer play with his Mama in the field behind the house – while Sitara was busy on the Computer and Maya and Kieran were having afternoon nap.   BNormally Maya does not need afternoon nap but this day she was encouraged by her parents as she woke up early in the morning.

Late in the afternoon, there was a gift exchange – an early Birthday gift exchange for the coming birthdays for Sachin, Sitara and Maya   – as it seems neither Nina/Sunjay could go to Toronto for celebrating Maya’s birthday in August nor Sunir/Shannon can come over for Sachin birthday in July or for Sitara’s birthday in August.   So this visit to DR by Sunir and family provided an opportunity to do the Gift giving .

Friday 03 July 2015

This was to be busy day – as Ba/Bapuji along with Nina/Sunjay had organised a Welcome Party for Kieran – to introduce him to our Indian Community friends in Deep River and the area .

A Cake was also ordered from Valumart bakery – with inscription     ” Kieran 1st Year –   a piece of cake “.

Some 10 families ( which include   Kannan’s   daughter/husband – Dhenuka/Arun from London, Ontario and Kanna’s son /wife ( Karthik/Ashley) did join us to share the joy of welcoming Kieran into the family and to DR.

Sitara missed the last part of the party ( when the Cake for Kieran) was cut – by Maya and Sachin   – as she had a prior engagement for   a sleep-over party   at her freind’s home in DR.

Note: In the morning (early at 9.30 am) the kids had gone to   the Pine Point beach – Maya and Kieran with their parents and Sitara and Sachin were driven there by their nana at 9.30 am and picked them back at 11.30 am .

Saturday 04 July 2015

This day in the   morning – Kieran was helped (by parents, Maya and Ba/Bapuji) to open the gifts given to him by friends (during the previous day Party) – he was all excited and having fun.

He demonstrated so much lively actions and fun and made all very happy.

Both Sitara and Sachin (along with parents) joined Maya and Kieran at nana/nani home and all had lunch together and after that all went to the Pine Point beach for a short time – as all were invited to Kannan/Lakshmi home at 3.00 pm to a welcome party for their newest grandson (Keaton) – Ashley and Karthik being the parents.

Sunday 05 July 2015

Both Maya and Kieran departed for Toronto at about 9.30 am -driven by their parents in their Subaru Outback car – stopping over in Huntsville (at their mom’s maternal grandma’s home) for a couple of hours and then arriving in Toronto late in the evening.

—–

Also on this day – Sunjay’s niece Rita and her husband Mahesh and their 3 kids from Boston arrived by car ( late afternoon) at Mackey to spend a few days with them on holiday.   The 3 kids are grown-up   – the boy   is in high school doing grade 11 and two girls are in pre-graduate courses.

Nana/nani   went to Mackey to meet the guests in the evening.

Monday   06 July 2015

In the afternoon, the guests – all went to the Pine Point Beach in Deep River – along with Sitara , Sachin and Nina but later joined by nani picked up by Sunjay.

After the beach fun – they all went to Petawawa and had the dinner at the now famous Lebanese restaurant  ” Madameek ” on the Victoria Street. All were joined by nana – having come from his Bridge Card game at Pembroke.   All had enjoyed the Lebanese dishes served at the restaurant.

After dinner all went romping at the Petawawa rapids   – walked and stepped on massive rocks and walked on wall along the Petawawa River.   As the dusk was falling – nana/nani returned back to DR  to their home

After the rapids they all went to Canadian Army base grounds (near museum) in Petawawa to look around at the military equipment on display outdoors.   Then late they all went to Mackey.

Tuesday   07 July 2015

The guests spent the day at  Mackey – Swimming, soaking themselves in the hot tub and also sauna etc.  Nana/nani joined the fun (and dinner) in the evening. At the time when nana/nani arrived at Mackey Rita   was cooking the clams ( which the kids had collected from the Pine Point Beach in Deep River on Monday) .

The evening was spent mostly indoors playing  on the ” caram ” board

Mahesh, Rita and their three kids ( one boy and two girls) left Mackey early morning on Wednesday 8 July  to return to Boston by car.

However, Mackey was busy as they were entertaining another family to visit that evening   – Sanjay, Sapna, the kids (boy  5 1/2 years old and the girl is 2 1/2) and along Sanjay’s Mum (Rewaben ) and Dad -Prabubhai  came from Philadelphia in their car – arrived at about 7.30 pm – having spent some time in Ottawa.   Sanjay is our Sunjay’s cousin .   Rewaben and Prabhubhai are from England – recently arrived in USA to visit   their son and family.

Nana/nani visited the guest family at Mackey after having their supper in DR.

Thursday   08 July 2015

The guests came over to DR in the morning – all kids went to the DR Library program with Nina and Sapna – seniors spending time  with nana/nani at DR home . Also Sanjay ( the guest) spent time at DR home to connect to his office in Philadelphia- to carry out his office work.

Sitara dad – Sunjay had gone to his office for the day.

After the library program (which finished at about 11.30 am) all went   to Pine Point beach in Deep River .  Nani also joined them but nana stayed home .

The beach party enjoyed the picnic burgers etc obtained by nana from the Burger King in Deep River

After spending time at the beach Nani  came back at home around 3.00 pm and all others went to Mackey.

Friday 09 July 2015

The guests spent the day in Mackey – swimming in the pool, using the hot tub and kids playing together . Nana/nani went there in the afternoon – had a great social with the seniors and then went outdoors   to be with kids – who went for kayaking .

First batch of outdoors sportsmen were Nina, Sapna and Sitara who went for kayaking on the Ottawa River (along their home) – after that Sunjay, Sanjay , Sachin and the guest kid went for their kayaking .

Nana/nani had to return to DR as they were going for a birthday party at Bears Den at 6.00 pm for 1 year old baby girl – Shreya – (Bhawna/Satyam’s daughter)

Note: the guests returned to Philadelphia – leaving Mackey on Saturday (July 10) morning .

Sunday July 12 – Sunjay’s Mum and Yasmin  to arrive from England until August 14.

Sunday     12 July 2015

Hasuben –   Sitara and Sachin’s Ba ( Sunjay’s mom) –   along with Yashmin – Sitara/Sachin’s cousin ( Sunjays’ sister’s daughter) arrived from London on Saturday – picked up from the airport by Sunjay in the afternoon –   arriving late in the evening -as Sunjay had a detour for shopping in Ottawa.

There was a thunderstorm at Mackey resulting in a loss of electrical power for few hours. So the guests got a bit of rural Canada’s life experience with no water as the well pump was not operative due to lack of electrical power.

Monday   13 July 2015

Nana/nani went to Mackey in the evening to welcome the guests from UK and spent a few hours with them and playing with Sitara and Sachin . Nana   played frist with Sitara and then with Sachin a game of ” Connect ”   .

Also Sitara wrote to The tooth fairy letting her know of her second molar fell out. Here is what her mom posted on her Facebook page :

” Writing a letter to the Tooth Fairy. Sitara’s second Molar fell out today. Apparently it is supposed to fall out when you are 10 years old. The poor kid can’t lose any more teeth…. She can barely eat anything! ”

Tuesday 14 July 2015.

It was a rainy day and kids and guests spent time indoors in Mackey during the day . In the evening all came over ( including kids’ dad who came from his work) to DR to nana/nani home and all had dinner together .

After dinner all ( except nana who stayed back at home in DR – due to his health ) went to see a movie     ( Inside Out) played at the Troyes Cinema   in Petawawa .

Note : The owner/manager of Troyes (Larry ) always at the start of the movie does a demonstration of physical flips (athletic) on the stage to amuse the audience specially the kids   . This evening prior to start of the movie ( at the time of   buying tickets ) , Sitara bravely asked Larry if he was going to do the flip this evening. He responded with a polite ” yes” and that made Sitara very happy.

In fact she drew (while at the theater)   an impromptu “fantastic/realistic”  pencil caricature drawing of the “hand stand” ( a flip ) done by Larry on the stage  . Her nani was really surprised and very happy at the quality of the sketch/picture . Bravo Sitara.

NOTE:

“Inside Out,” a comedy-adventure set inside the mind of an 11-year old girl, is the kind of classic that lingers in the mind after you’ve seen it,

—————

Parents need to know that Inside Out is an  outstandingly original, heartfelt story from Pixar about growing up and learning to handle your biggest emotions. Told primarily from the perspective of the feelings inside 11-year-old Riley’s mind (brought to life by the voices of  Amy Poehler, Mindy Kaling, Bill Hader, and more), the plot has many moments of peril/tension — including bridges/islands crumbling, a train tumbling over a precipice, and characters falling into a deep, dark pit. (Spoiler alert: One key character also permanently  fades from existence; that and scenes in which it seems  Riley  is “borrowing” her mom’s credit card and running away are definitely upsetting.) Some of Riley’s  fears are also on display,  including a giant, scary clown. Parents are likely to get hit hardest  by the film’s heart-tugging moments (bring tissues!), but anyone with empathy will feel for Riley as she experiences life’s ups and downs. Ultimately,  Inside Out has important messages about needing to feel — and express — all of your emotions, whether happy or sad. Although most of the content is appropriate for elementary schoolers and up, younger kids may need a bit more explanation about what’s going on, since there are references to abstract thought and  the subconscious, and it can be a little confusing when other characters’ emotions are shown.

This   day Sitara and Sachin spent time with their cousin from UK ( Yashmin) and with their Ba ( Sunjay’s Mom) at home.   Then they went outdoors  – all family & guests together  ( of course dad was at work in DR) in the bushes near their home in Mackey and picked wild blueberries and raspberries .

In the late afternoon all came to DR to nana/nani home for dinner ( their dad also joined in   after his work) – and at that time brought the  “picked” berries for the dessert after the dinner.

After dinner, Sitara played with her cousin Yasmin –   setting up the Barbie’s castle but also managed to  dress up a Barbie doll with a white gown (made from tissue paper) – all with accessories such a belt. So realistic gown and proper dressing .

Sachin played around with his dad and read a book on Ninja – borrowed from the DR Library.

Sunday 19 July 2015

This day was celebratory one as Sachin’s 6th birthday party was arranged at Mackey – from 1.00 pm to 6.00 pm.   This time only a couple of his friends ( & their families) were invited – to keep party engaged where Sachin can play with   each of his friends .   The day was   a bit cloudy one with a forecast of rainy day.

Some games were planned for the kids (which can be played indoors or outdoors)   . Most were played indoors but luckily the rain did not stay long – so some games were also played outdoor   as well as   a dip in the pool – with lots of fun and excitement.     A birthday cake was cut and enjoyed by all.   In total there were 6 kids – including Sitara.

This day was doubly celebratory as it was also a birthday for kid’s Ba ( Sunjay’s mom- Hasuben) . Her birthday coincides with Sachin’s birthday. This year she was here in Mackey having arrived from England recently for a few weeks – along with Yashmin ( her granddaughter – her daughter’s daughter).

Here is the poem Sachin’snana wrote for him to celebrate his 6th Birthday :

Sachin’s 6th Birthday 20 July 2015

Our Sachin, 6 years and growing

Your smile and twinkle in your eyes

are mesmerising

Keep our spirits high

You are like a sunshine in our life

Your spontaneous and loving hugs

Keep   blood flowing in our veins

Our Sachin is always

so playful and cheerful

That enhances our mojo all times

We wish you

a Very Happy Birthday

and many more to come

nana/nani

Monday 20 July 2015 ( actual birthday for Sachin and also for his Ba )

The kids went to Eganville to visit/see the Caves along with visitors from England ( their Ba and didi ) – the day was planned to take the visitors from England for an outing to Eganville and after that a visit to Hugly farm in Pembroke -ending the day with dinner at East Side Maria in Pembroke ( kid’s favourite restaurant) .   All went by nana’s maroon Dodge minivan – as 6 family members can sit comfortably well together in the minivan.

This is what Nina wrote on her Facebook page on that date :

” The Bonnechere Caves, Huglis and dinner at the kids favourite restaurant topped off with a visit with friends. I’d say Sachin and Mum had a fun filled Birthday!! ‘

Tuesday 21 July 2015

This day Nina had to go to Ottawa for her tooth root canal job – a tooth was paining since last few days .

Nina went to Ottawa along with kid’s didi and the kids and their Ba spent time in Deep River with nana/nani.

Of course their dad was working that day .

The kids and their Ba joined in for breakfast and after breakfast (as the day was rainy ) the kids played on nana’s computer .     Outside activities were difficult   due to rain/clouds but when a little sunshine came the kids went outdoors for an hour or so – and they used chalk to draw designs on the concrete path way in the front of the entrance to nana/nani home.   Sitara made a wonderful drawing of a flower.

In the evening their dad joined with the family for dinner (Nina and kids’ didi being in Ottawa) after dinner spent time together playing/chatting before going home to Mackey

Thursday 23 July 2015

This day the kids are joining the family to go to Toronto – as their Ba (and Didi ) would want   visit some relatives in Toronto/Mississauga area   .   They drove from Mackey in the evening (in nana’s maroon 2001 Dodge minivan) after their dad had returned from work.

On their return from Toronto on Sunday , they will visit Shannonmami’s parents cottage (on the Trent-Severn) and have lunch with SunirMama, ShannonMami, Maya and Kieran at the cottage  and ShannonMami’s parents and other family   members.   After lunch and kids playing together and adults having chitchat- the family will return to Mackey late in the evening .

They returned to Mackey at about 10.30 pm – after having stopped over en route for dinner.

Tuesday 28 July 2015

All came over to nana/nani home in Deep River in the afternoon – after they had spent time at Limure beach in Deep River – with their mom, didi and Ba. They then had their lunch at nana/nani home.

Sachin played with nana (with his Shopingkin toys and the book)   and then later gone for walk along his didi and nana. Sachin used   his kiddie scooter but then decided to take a path across the back alleys in the forest cutting from the Thompson Cr – the pathway ended at the other end of the Thompson Cr.

Sitara had gone to her Art Class .

In the evening their dad came over (after his work) to be with the family. This day Teerth                             (boy – 8 + years )  and Devki (girl – 4 + year ) were invited -along with their parents (Prinka-mom and Pankaj-dad) and their grandfather (maternal) Jagdishbhai – who is a visitor from Ahmedabad-Gujarat, India.

There was feast   of a dinner together – kids having their dinner first and then adults had theirs   – followed by dessert -in similar fashion.

Thursday 30 July 2015

The kids and their Ba as well as their Didi along with their Mom   spent the afternoon at Tea Lake (Rolphton) – Catching frogs and snakes!

It was a fun day for them and after that they spent time in the hot tub (and of course in the pool) at home in Mackey.

note: nana/nani had not joined them this day in this outdoor activity

This is what their mom posted on her Facebook on the same date.

” Tea Lake, then straight in the hottub and pool ”

Friday 31 July 2015

Well,  Maya and Kieran are on the move – travelling by air to Denver with their parents

Here is an e-mail from their mom dated Friday 31 July 2015

Hello all,

We have arrived safely in Denver after a long day of traveling. All was going reasonably well until we showed up at the airport car rental agency only to discover that I had accidentally booked our car for pickup at the downtown branch instead (45 minutes away)… but the car seats I had ordered from a separate company showed up at the airport car rental branch, as ordered 🙁 Oops! Fortunately, Uber came to the rescue. We ordered a van to install the car seats into and drive us to the other car rental location, since there were no rental cars left at the airport location.

Things have improved since that initial complication. We have checked into a nice hotel with views of the mountains and have been to a kiddie amusement park (see below). Maya liked the rides but Kieran was a bit terrified… Fortunately he had his big sister to look out for him!

Love to you all,
Shannon
xoxo

Saturday   01 August 2015

Kids (Sitara and Sachin) along with the whole family ( including kids’s Ba and didi) came over to Deep River to participate in the program at Arena  for celebration of Deep River 70th Anniversary year. The program was originally planned to be outdoors but due to rain and warning of thunderstorm – it was relocated to the DR Arena .

Nana/Nani also joined in the activities for a short while .

Note:     The following posted on Friday 31 July 2015 on Deep River 70th Anniversary Facebook:

”   We’re on the Move! Because of the weather forecast for tomorrow afternoon (showers and risk of a thunderstorm) we are moving a number of activities to the Deep River Arena. This is because the Air Bounce and other big inflatables are not safe if wet (too slippery) and also because there is a possibility of thunderstorms right through the afternoon period. Check out the schedule below and hope to see you tomorrow! All activities are free! ”

After spending at activities at the Arena , all assembled at nana/nani home for dinner – after that adults played cards (chokdi) , kids were entertained with different activities . Sitara as usual remained busy reading – she is very much into reading ”  Archie’s ” comic books – which nani had gathered since many years.

After the card session- all assembled in the living room to watch the video clip of celebration of India’s 50th anniversary   at Deep River Townhall.

—————–

Event/Function held at Deep River ( Ontario) Town hall on Saturday 16 August 1997

Event organised by the East Indian Community of what is fondly known as –   the   ” Deep River/ Pembroke Corridor ”   ( Renfrew County) .

Chief Guest : His Worship Mayor of Deep River – Mr. John Murphy

Leading the event and Master of Ceremony – Pravin Shah

Video Clip taken by Dr. Chatterjee – formerly of Pembroke

—————–

Both kids were very excited to watch the video clip   – especially to see their nana leading the event and giving a speech.   Sachin just came over and gave multiple hugs to his nana and Sitara (while reading her Archie’s comic book) just posited herself over her nana resting her head on his lap.

Sunday 02 August 2015

Maya and Kieran are in the Rocky Mountain National park – as informed by their mom’s e-mail sent on 02 August 2015.

After a nice day in Denver on Friday, we arrived yesterday at our YMCA lodge in Rocky Mountain National Park. It’s like summer camp for families… lodges and cabins, a dining hall, and lots of activities (swimming pool, playground, crafts, games, hikes, etc). Today we are having a lunchtime cook-out with all the Olarkers. There are three other Olark families with young kids, so Maya and Kieran have some playmates.

Congratulations to Erika on your silver medal at the European Ultimate Frisbee Championship! What an accomplishment!

Note: Erica is kid’s Aunt( Shannon sister) who is currently living in Switzerland.

Monday 03 August 2015

Sitara was entertained for her upcoming Birthday by her parents taking her to Ottawa- using nana’s 2001 maroon Dodge minivan .   After a pit stop at Deep River at nana/nani home – they drove away at about 10.00 am.   Her brother (Sachin), didi (Yashmin) and Ba (Hasuben) also joined her & family. They stayed the night at a hotel in Ottawa, visited museums and other places of interests.

They all went to see/participate in the Ottawa Busker Festival, Hop-on-Hop-off Tour of the Ottawa sites, The Royal Canadian Mint, Dinner in the Byward Market, The Museum of Nature, The Body Worlds Exhibit, Dinner at the Mill St. Brewery.

They dissected an Owl Pellet – and found a skeleton of a rodent inside .

They returned back to Mackey next day ( Tuesday ) late in the night.

Tuesday 04 August 2015

Maya and Kieran are in Boston, USA having a great time hob-nobbing with other kids of Olark staff   ( Maya’s dad’s work colleagues in USA ) .

In an e-mail message dated 04 August 2015 , their mom informed the relatives as below:

” Here are Maya and Kieran with their new Olark buddies. Zozi is 4 days younger than Maya and Bailyn is 2 weeks older than Kieran – very convenient! Maya and Zozi are going to day camp together today… I’m so excited for Maya’s first “camp” experience! I hope she likes camp as much as her mom 😀 Everyone enjoyed the group campfire and s’mores last night (but I was the only one singing camp songs!)”

NOTE:   Maya will be attending a day camp this day along with a daughter ( Zozi) of one Olark staff.

Wednesday 05 August 2015

Happy Birthday our special granddaughter, Sitara.

This day was spent by Sitara mostly at home ( her dad also had taken time off from work) playing and hobnobbing with Sachin, her Didi and adults.

In the afternoon all came over to Deep River to nana/nani home – opened her Birthday gifts and nana’ poem for his special girl.

Poem:

Sitara’s 8th Birthday – 05 August 2015

Our mesmerising Sitara

Turning 8 year old

The years go by

Independent and Full of confidence

Very affectionate

Keen on art and craft

Reading is her second nature

She   exudes so much love

Always caring and considerate

She is a princess always in our hearts

We adore you, Sitara

We wish you

a Very Happy Birthday

and many more to come

nana/nani

Then all subsequently drove to Petawawa ( nana/nani in the Jetta VW and the rest in the Dodge Minivan) to see the rapids and walk on the wall there along the Petawawa River (at the Emerald Trail in Petawawa) ) . After that all proceeded to   Pembroke for a celebratory dinner at Boston Pizza .

All had a great time.

NOTE: This is what Nina wrote on her Facehook entry on 5 August 2015

” Busy week so far celebrating Sitara’s birthday and Showing Ba and cousin Yasmin around Ottawa. Ottawa Busker Festival, Hop-on-Hop-off Tour of the Ottawa sites, The Royal Canadian Mint, Dinner in the Byward Market, The Museum of Nature, The Body Worlds Exhibit, Dinner at the Mill St. Brewery, The Rapids and then Dinner with Both sets of Grandparents and all the cousins! Now to get ready for Sitara’s birthday party! ”

——————–

Friday 07 August 2015

This day there was a social gathering at Soli/Roy’s home in Deep River in the evening – we were invited and also the kids (Sitara and Sachin) along with her parents, Ba and didi.

The party had other guests also.  The kids like to play with Soli/Roy’s sons Kevin and Ethan. Both are teens in age.

However the party got a tremendous excitement boost when a   black bear was spotted at house on Hillcrest Street ( perpendicular to the road on which Soli/Roy house is situated) across from Soli/Roy’s home and can be seen clearly from the back patio of Soli/Roy house. The kids were excited – so were all the rest of us . The Deep River Police were notified – as the house owners were not at home .

The evening also turned into a surprise for Sitara as a cake (with a candle) was ready to celebrate her birthday . Everyone joined in with gusto to sing her a Happy Birthday song.

Friday 07 August 2015

This day is an important one for the family. It is Maya’s 4th birthday . However she is on a travel with her parents (and her baby brother, Kieran) to Denver in USA at this time.

They (her parents and her dad’s Work Colleagues)  did hold  a Birthday celebratory party for her in Denver .

Here is what her mom sent on her e-mail of the same date:

” It’s been a great trip! Sunir and I both got to try zip-lining… lots of fun! (that’s me in the yellow helmet in the photo). Maya really enjoyed her birthday party and birthday hike. Tomorrow we head to Boulder for one night and then it’s back to Toronto (and starting my new job – gulp!)

Note:

A zip–line (or zip line, zip wire, aerial runway, aerial ropeslide, death slide, flying fox, or foefie slide (in South Africa)) consists of a pulley suspended on a cable, usually made of stainless steel, mounted on an incline.

Love to all and thanks for the birthday wishes for Maya. She enjoyed hearing/seeing them all. xoxo ”

Here is a poem her Bapuji wrote to celebrate Maya’s 4th Birthday:

Maya’s 4th Birthday – 07 August 2015

Our bubbly Maya

Always so energetic

Turning four years old

A young one always active

Her smiles compassionate

Maturity shines every time

She is priceless

Always in our hearts

We love you Maya

We wish you

A day of fun and laughter

a Very Happy Birthday

and many more to come

Sachin had gone to a birthday party (at a friend’s house on Faraday Av. Deep River)

In the afternoon Sachin’s mom ,didi and Sitara walked over to Faraday Av. to bring   Sachin to nana/nani home . The grannies (and Nina) were busy making strawberry jam in the afternoon . While Sitara was busy with her Archie book,   Sachin went outdoors with his dad, didi and nana to go to the kiddies’ park on Huran Road – which is a walking distance from nana/nani home   .

After dinner , Sitara played with her nana – making a fort (tent) in the Recreation room – demonstrating her construction skill for building such tent with all kinds of blankets and whatever is available around.   The tent was used to snuggle in and read her Archie book (using a flash light ) with nana.

The ladies were busy in the kitchen making Sukhdi ( Gol Papdi) – an Indian sweet dish . Ans later all got tired ready for sleep and went to Mackey – late in the evening .

It was a wonderful day of the Opening night of the “Kids Art Exhibition” – at 7.00 pm in the Deep River Library .  Sitara participated and displayed 3 of her paintings and a ” paper Marché ” Nemo (fish)

Nina (Sitara’s mom) posted the following on her Facebook on Tuesday 25 August 2015 :

Opening night of the “Kids Art Exhibition”. Congratulations to all the young Artists and their Instructor Olga Nazarkina. What talent we have in our community!.!

Grandparents are very proud of Sitara and her abilities.

Her dad could not attend as he had to go out of town on business.

Sachin was all excited – dressed up   with a tie and really enjoyed the evening .

Lots of people attended the function and as the exhibit was for art work (mostly paintings) from many young artists  – all students of Olga Nazarkina.

All participating artists also received their Certificates for participation.

Tuesday 25 August 2015

Here is a very happy news story; A message on Nina’s Facebook page .

”   I am sitting in the other room eavesdropping on the kids….they are lying on their bellies and Sitara is helping Sachin read through a bunch of books….helping him sound out words and work through the harder words “.

An excellent brother (younger) and sister (older) team.

Thursday 27 August 2015 to Sunday 30 August 2015

Both Sitara and Sachin were dropped at nana/nani home to spend the weekend at Deep River with their nana and nani – as their parents were celebrating their 11 year wedding anniversary – as they were going to Ottawa (on Friday ) for the weekend and splurge for celebration. Nana dropped Sunjay 9In the afternoon ) at Petawawa – where Nina works on Fridays -so both he and Nina then can go to Ottawa from there.

During the weekend   (from Thursday to Sunday) – the kids had a great time with their nana/nani and of course their nana /nani had great   time with their grandkids . They played many board games ( Torture, Monopoly , and checkers) . Also Sitara painted her fabric elephant ( nana/nani had given her for her birthday gift)- using fabric crayons .   Sachin had his nana read stories from a story book ( 365 days Stories )   and both the kids were very much in doing their “homework” – writing practice and maths .

On Saturday nana worked with them to build “popsicle” bridges – Sitara using normal popsicle sticks and Sachin having coloured popsicle sticks. This project went along till Sunday morning as glue takes time to dry   . Bridge members were held by clothespins (provided by nani) .   Later in the evening Sitara created a house using blocks – having nana giving her inspiration.

In between time – Sachin played on nana’s computer ( he likes to go to Shopkins site) . Nana had shown him   how to access the site and now he types on ‘google” and get to the site -not needing nana’s help .   Great for a 6 year old – independently using the computer.   Also both watched TV – children’s programs.

On Sunday afternoon all went to the marina park in Deep River – kids played on the bars and slides but also walked to the lighthouse and along Ottawa River -collecting rocks and shells.

Their parents returned from Ottawa at about 9.00 pm and all spent some time together and by 10.00 pm   they had gone to Mackey to their home .

Tuesday 01 September 2015

This day the schools started in Deep River . So both Sitara and Sachin were transported to school by their mom (from Mackey) and after that their mom had free time at the Pine Point Beach (Deep River) with other moms . After school , the kids and mom came over to nana/nani home for dinner – also joined by their dad after his work.

Sachin got a lovely jersey and a card (from nana/nani but delivered by his big sister Sitara) – to encourage and boost his morale – for getting/graduating   into 1st Year in the primary stream.

Wednesday 02 September 2015

This is a momentous time/day   for both Sitara and Sachin- as they will be taking the school bus straight from Mackey – no need to come over to the baby-sitter home in Deep River (Jeannette) any more .

This is what their mom posted on her Facebook page on Wednesday 2 September 2015

” Put the kids on the bus MYSELF for the first time Ever! OK. Now I get it. This is the first time I have had emotions when my kids went to school. Today is like their first day of school ever for me. Feeling sad and empty nested “

The kids arrived safely to school though a bit late as the school bus had to pick many other kids en route – more than they had expected.   The kids came back home on the school bus this day – and talking to Sachin on phone he seemed happy for the experience and so taking all new in the stride.

Note: Maya (in Toronto) will be starting her Junior KG oncoming Tuesday 8 September 2015 – after the Labour Day holiday.

Thursday 03 September 2015

Both Sitara and Sachin were picked up from school by their mom . Sitara went to her art class while Sachin was at the bank (with his mom) to deposit his piggy bank money .   After that they all came over to nana/nani home for dinner (also joined by their dad after his work). After dinner they all went to Deep River Arena – for registration in various kids’ activities in Deep River in the coming months – while nana/nani went for a bridge game at the Lawn Bowling Club.

Friday 04 September 2015

The kids went to Toronto driven by their parents in the VW Passat car – to participate in a program organised by their mom’s friend Priyanka and do some touristy things – for kids to have fun.

They were to stay at SunirMama home though SunirMama, ShannonMami, Maya and Kieran were to go to the cottage ( ShannonMamis’ parents. cottage) and thus miss them.

However, it so happened they got to meet their Mama/Mami on Monday 07 September as Maya/Kieran ( and their parents) were back from the cottage   before Sitara/Sachin were to return to Mackey ( again in their parents’ VW Passat) that day .   Note: The returned to Mackey late at night.

Here what was posted by their mom on her Facebook   – about a visit to CN Tower in Toronto

” 360 Restaurant and Top of the CN Tower – Great views and lots of fun for the kids watching the planes take off and land at the Toronto Island Airport! ”

Here what was posted by their mom on her Facebook   – about a visit to Canadian National Exhibition Tower in Toronto

I’d say this was a FANTASTIC long-weekend!! (Especially because Sitara has now decided that she finally likes the City!) ”

Tuesday 08 September 2015

Maya’s first day at her Junior KG   in Toronto near their home .     This is what her mom posted on her Facebook page;

” All ready for her first day of junior kindergarten! Maya was all smiles; I shed a few tears. ”

She also said the following as a response to one of the kind comments   from a friend.

”   When she first woke up this morning, she announced she had decided she didn’t want to go to JK and would rather go back to preschool. Once she got over that bump, she got excited! ”

Wednesday 09 September 2015

Sachin’s mom posted the following on her Facebook page :

 Sept 9, 2015
Me: “Sachin, what was the most awesome thing you did at school today?”
Sachin: “Oh, well, that is a hard question since everything I did was awesome”

Upto Tuesday 20 October 2015

Both Sitara and Sachin have been exemplary kids – doing their homework and playing with each other.

They participate in their activities after school – swimming, Sitara’s art class, both going for badminton and Sachin playing ice hockey .

In   Toronto, Maya and Kieran also have settled down at their separate schools ( Maya in Junior KG and Kieran at DayCare) – while their mom have completed her   final examination for her advanced paediatric   course .      Both Kids are participating in     extracurricular activities – mostly swimming

Recently on Thursday 22 October 2015 , Sitara and Sachin had gone to Toronto with their parents   and spent time visiting   various museums and participating in the Navratri garba function . (note: their dad had a business appointment in Toronto) . They returned back to Mackey on Sunday   18 October 2015 – after visiting ( enroute to Mackey)   their cousins Maya and Kieran (along with their SunirMama and ShannonMami) in Toronto .

On Friday 16 October 2015, Ba/Bapuji sent a mail parcel to Maya/Kieran with Halloween stickers and miscellaneous pumpkin decorations. They (and parents) called on Saturday ( 24 October 2015) to thank for the parcel which they had received and both kids are enjoying that very much specially the stickers at this time . The pumpkin carving has not yet planned.

Similarly kids here in Deep River (Sitara and Sachin ) saw various items that nana/nani have gathered for their Halloween night fun – including a large pumpkin  (which is stored in the garage for the moment). They are quite excited and would want to carve the pumpkin along with their parents. The carving of the pumpkin is not yet planned.

Friday 23 October 2015

Both Sitara and Sachin joined their nana/nani for dinner (along with their parents ) while still participating in their after school activities – Sachin taken by his dad for his badminton at Mackenzie Community School hall and Sitara taken to Pembroke (by her mom) for her music class.

Later in the evening all went to 5-pin Bowling Club to partake in the celebratory cake (for celebrating Deep River 70th Anniversary)   and also free bowling activity. Sachin really enjoyed bowling – never getting tired – he was joined by his nana after much waiting.   His nani also bowled at a different lane and enjoyed the game.   Both his mom and Sitara also joined the fun after they had come back from Pembroke.

Nina posted the following note on her Facebook entry :

Celebrating our bowling alley’s 70th Birthday as a Family this weekend

Saturday 24 October 2015

The kids and their parents spent the day in Deep River – having lunch and dinner at nana/nani home as they have multiple activities during the day as well as in the evening .   Sachin had ice hockey in the morning (at the arena) and both kids had badminton during the day (at the Mackenzie Community hall) . Further Sitara had Figure Skating in the evening (at the arena) – all went to see her skating . Her mom was all happy that her own coach – Kathy Buckley – (of the years when she was a kid and learning Figure Skating in Deep River) was also coaching Sitara and her group.

Wednesday 28 October 2015

Sachin’s mom posted the following on her Facebook page:

Me: “Hey Sachin, what do you want to be when you grow up?”
Sachin: “I want to be a Math Guy. I want to have people come to me with math problems and I solve them!”
Me: *smile*

And then she   commented on the same Facebook entry –   as an afterthought – the following:

It’s a little more attainable than his last career choice of wanting to be a dinosaur who eats his sister!

Friday 30 October 2015

There is excitement in the air as it is the day before the Halloween day -tomorrow and all people   everywhere are preparing decorations and hanging spooky fake skeletons and other Halloween tidbits on the doors and trees and grounds. Schools are getting kids to decorate pumpkins and take part in some sort of art activity. Sachin won a pumpkin ( presumably his carving of the pumpkin got him the prize) .   Kids also had a gathering in the Childs Auditorium (in the Mackenzie School)- where nana/nani along with kids’ mom attended  – boy Sitara and Sachin were also there along with many other students. The theme/topic  of the gathering was ” Courage ” but this time there was no music/singing choir.

In Toronto, Maya participated in a Halloween parade – along with some 800 other kids.  Her mom sent an-email to all relatives with Maya’s photo-she   is so cute and seems to be having fun.

Here is the message in the e-mail (from Shannon) dated Friday 30 October 2015:

" Here is Maya the angel at her school's Halloween parade.
It was pretty cool seeing 800 kids in costume!
Glad it was on a Friday so I was able to go "

Grandparents – 2015- 1st Quarter

The New year (2015) opened with a bang for the grandkids   (Sitara, Sachin, Maya and Kieran ).

The Grandparents in DR sent an e-mail (to kids’ parents) dated 7 January 2015   with a   title :

Holiday Cheers !

Finally Grandparents in DR managed to loosen the purse strings – the first positive move of 2015.
Each grandchild’s Trust Account here with us – got augmented on 6 Jan 2015.
This then boosted their (each one) Scotia Dividend Fund Account – specially when the markets were a bit down.
Love these joyful grandkids – they spread the cheers.
Love :):):)

This was special day for Maya – see the e-mail sent by her mom – with two photos of her -with wacky dress,
Today was wacky Wednesday at Maya’s daycare, so she chose this funky-patterned outfit and hairdo 🙂
Her Bapuji   displayed the photo ( a bit cropped) on his computer’s dashboard . It gave so much joy.         Maya is an active and really a   fun girl.
Sunday 25 January 2015
Today was a bright sunny day – very cold though:   temperature hovering   – 15 degrees C   or thereabout.
This day both Sitara and Sachin took part in the  Nancy Green Race! (with   Alpine Racing jackets) competition organised at Mt. Martin downhill Skiing in Deep River, Ontario. This was a   team competition. Both nana/nani went to observe and cheer both the kids -Their 1st race was at 11.00 a.m and then after a brief break the 2nd race was at about 11.30 p.m. Nana/nani were back home by noon – just to get out of the cold but the kids stayed at the Hill with their parents.   Sunjay is a Ski patrol this year.
This is what their mom posted later on her FaceBook :
Sachin’s Team came in 2nd place and Sitara’s Team placed 3rd. This was their first Nancy Green Race!
Note There was a repeat of the Race again on Saturday 31 January 2014. Both nana/nani went to the Mt.   Martin Ski Club grounds   to cheer the kids.   It was   a beautiful day .     The results of this race was   similar to the one on Sunday 25 January 2015.
Tuesday 27 January 2015
Sachin was busy this evening working with his nani to make   a farewell card for a girl in his class.
To Marly
I will miss you
Good Luck, Marly

Thursday   29 January 2015
This day both Maya and Kieran were preparing to go (fly) to Cuba   for a holiday with their parents, grandparents   (maternal)   and with   Heather Auntie, Ryan Uncle and their new baby cousin Cole.         Sunwing Vacations     flying to Cayo Coco (CCC) Airport.       Hotel Name :     MEMORIES FLAMENCO BEACH RESORT.
This will be Kieran’s first visit overseas. It is Maya’s second time.   Maya   was only 3 months old the first time round – attending a wedding (one of the girls on her mother’s side was getting married) . This time Maya is 3 1/2 years old and quite enthusiastic to go to a beach.
They are flying on Friday – early morning .
An e-mail ( dated Thursday 29 Jnauary) with a photo showing both Maya and Kieran frolicking on a packed suitcase for travel   at their home in Toronto was received from their mom -with a title   :-   Getting packed and ready to go!
A phone call was also received at about 8.00 p.m when both Sunir and Shannon   briefly mentioned about their travel details and hotel accommodation – which will be forwarded by an e-mail soon.   Note : that was done promptly by Shannon.
Thursday   29 January 2015
This day Sitara was awarded a Certificate   at her school for showing ” Responsibilty” in her class and at the school . This is her second certificate   – having received a similar one last year.     Well done.
Friday 6 February 2014
This day Maya and Kieran returned/flew back from Cuba – with their parents and their baby cousin Cole , Aunt and Uncle ( Cole’s parents) and their maternal Grandma and Grandpa.
They had   great time at the beach – both kids savouring and frolicking at the beach – enjoying the heat and sunshine.
Here is an e-mail message/response received ( in response to Bapuji’s message   dated 7 February 2015) from Shannon ( kid’s mom) on the same date.
Ba / Bapuji had mailed an envelop (   full of tidbits for Valentine day for both kids ) on Friday 6 February 2015   – so to alert the kid’ parents – to keep an eye on Mail Delivery around   coming midweek .
———-
Here is text of e-mail sent by Bapuji on 7 February 2015:

Response message from Kid’s mom:
Hi Jackie and Pravin,

Thanks for your message. I hope you are both doing well. Just a quick note to let you know that we arrived home safely yesterday. We had a great trip with beautiful weather and lots of family time. Maya and Kieran both loved the pool and the beach! We will send photos soon. Unfortunately, we all seem to have picked up a stomach bug in the last 24 hours so we are taking it easy today.

Talk to you soon,
Love Shannon

Subsequently   on the same date – Saturday 7 February 2015 ,   some beach photos   showing kids in Cuba   (currently   2 batches) were received from kids’ mom   via electronic mail .

Here is the text of the   first batch:

Here are a few photos of our trip that Sunir took on his phone. We are excited to see some more from Heather and Ryan’s camera, but here’s a little taste in the meantime. I certainly miss the hot weather! It was a great trip 🙂     . There were 5 photos attached .

Here is the text of the second batch:

Here are a few more. The middle one is what we envisioned the vacation being like… both parents relaxing on lounge chairs while the kids play happily on the beach  (it lasted a total of 3 minutes!!)

Again there were 5 photos attached .

————————–

Note:   –   On a phone call from Toronto on Saturday evening ( 7 February 2015)   ; it was learnt that Kieran has become fully locomotive on his fours   – crawling freely all over and confidently . And this was while he was in Cuba.

Note: On   Monday 9 February 2015 – an e-mail from Kieran’s mom was received with   a Kieran’s photo   – he standing by himself and playing with his toys ( in the recreation room towards the back of their home in Toronto) . Here is what she wrote:

” Kieran is looking particularly grown up and handsome today, if I do say so myself 😉 ”     Shannon

——

His Bapuji (from Deep River) then fired off a response (on the same date) as below:

Wow ! he wins all hearts .

Has he started walking or just standing up?

Bapuji

——

His mom’s return response (sent from her iphone) of the same date — see below:

” He pulls up on everything and loves to stand up (while holding on). He walks holding on to our fingers and has taken a few steps on his own, but isn’t really walking independently. He is getting very fast at crawling on his hands and knees though 🙂 “

Saturday 7 February 2015

This day nana/nani went (for short time ) to the Mt. Martin Hill Ski Club grounds – to watch the kids taking their ski lessons. It was great to get out of the house and watch the young ones enjoying and learning the skills for downhill skiing .   They do ski well since some time but now the time has come for some intricate skills to learn -which will be useful later when they grow up to be teenagers and then grown-ups.

After skiing lessons and skiing thereafter – the kids (with parents)   came over to nana/nani home for dinner and sleepover.   Their parents did not partake in the dinner as they were going to Petawawa for a party   .   The kids had a great quality time with the grandparents and then went to bed .
Their parent were also sleeping over in Deep River (nana/nani home)   – as all were going on Sunday to Petawawa for sking competition (for kids) .
The parents returned from their party around mid-night.
So after breakfast on Sunday – all got ready and went over to Petawawa for ski competition at Petawawa Hill.
This is what Nina (kids’ mom – our daughter) posted on her Facebook at about 3.35 p.m. ( on Sunday 8 February 2015) :-
Cold and Windy day at the hill in Petawawa but Sitara’s team placed 1st and Sachin’s team placed 2nd!
Congratulations kids!
Thursday 12 February 2015
Wow !   Creative juices flowed – Maya came up with a story to tell and she took initiative and dictated that story to her mom for having it written down.   Bravo ! Maya.
Her mom then took initiative and then distributed that story to family members – by an e-mail attachement.
Her e-mail ( titled Maya’s first story ) dated 12 February stated the below:
”   Maya dictated a story to me this morning. I think the themes of swimming and eating are inspired by Cuba!   “Maya’s (   dictated ) story – February 12, 2015 ( age 3.5)
The story went as below:
Once upon a time , ocean called .
Someone called for help.
And he wanted food.
He rang his bell.
Then they swim in the ocean
after they are done eating.
They went a little deeper.
Then they went home to eat
dinner and go to bed.
Then it was a new day.
Saturday 14 February 2015
This day both Sitara and Sachin were to come to nana/nani home (with their parents ) for a Valentine Dinner but unfortunately that did not happen – as   Sachin kind of ” threw up ‘- at the skating ( at the arena in Deep River)   and thus the Valentine dinner was   ” sort off ” postponed /cancelled at that time.
On that day, both Maya and Kieran spent Valentine time with their maternal grandparents in Toronto   (with a sleepover) – when their parents can celebrate the   ” Day ”   by themselves .
Maya talked on phone to her Ba/Bapuji   and wished them Happy Valentine   – prior to her and Kieran going over to their   grandparents   – driven there by their parents.
However on Sunday 15 February 2015   – Kids (Sitara and Sachin) came   over with their parents (after free swimming at the Mackenze Community pool , Deep River – as part of the Deep River Winter Frolic weekend) and had great time celebarting Valentine and playing with both nana and nani.
Even though Sitara is   ~7 and half   and Sachin is ~ 5 and a half   – they like nana to pretend being   a ” bad wolf ”   and them building and hiding in the “house they built ”   –   by throwing a   “heavy blanket” over the crib ( which is still left over in Sachin’s room at nana/nani home – he no longer sleeps in the crib but sleeps on the bed – whenever the kids come over for a sleep over at nan/nani home) . The blanket covers the the crib at the top and one the sides . This is now a safe house for the kids – against the ” bad wolf ” . The ” bad wolf ” hollers, huffs and puffs but the cannot demolish the   pretend ” house” and kids are safe. Aftet a while all played hide and seek ( their nani joining in) .Meanwhile their parents had a quite time in the living room.
So a great Valentine Day was celebrated afterall   – a day after but the spirit was there.
The kids got Valentine gifts – Sitara – a big balloon ( with Frozen theme ” and Sachin got a balloon with a Thomas (train) theme – along with some stickers and smartie boxes.
Earlier   Ba/Bapuji had sent (Mail Delivery) in a large envelope – Valentine Gifts to Maya and Kieran – which they had promptly received ( just a few days after their return from Cuba – vacation time in a beach) .   Maya was exhilerated for recieving the gift parcel and Kieran was   found holding and chewing the small greeting envelop addressed to him . Her parents phoned in the ‘happiness” and Maya had   a long   “kiddie”   conversation with her Ba .
Unfortunately at that time her Bapuji had dozed off on the lazy-boy sofa in the Recreation Room   – watching TV.
The ‘Gift Envelope ‘   was received by Maya (and her parents) on   Wednesday 11 February 2015 and this was communicated to Deep River same day , As stated above,   Bapuji missed the excitement over the telephone   and thus he sent the following e-mail to Maya’s parents on that day.
Hi

I am glad that Maya/Kieran recieved their “Mail Delivery” on time .

Her Ba was ecstatic knowing about that when you guys phoned this evening .

Though I missed all the excitement as I had fallen asleep in the Rec Room sofa (lazyBoy) while watching TV.

Her (Maya’s) captivating photo (from her Cuba experience) is still on our computer Dashboard – and will soon be replaced by Kieran’s photo.

Have a nice and Happy Valentine day ! I am sure you will pamper both the kids that day.

love

All in all – everyone had a great excitement celebrating 2015 Valentine day.
Monday 16 February 2015 – being a Family day in Ontario – there were no schools and the work offices were closed . So Sitara and Sachin spent afternoon at the the Mackenzee Community swimming pool   (brought there by their parents) and then all came over to nana/nani place .
Sitara can now   (since about a month) can independently work at the Nana’s Computer and can use “google” to call up the Programs that she or Sachin want to watch.     She is slowly learning to use the keyboard   and now has her own account and pass word ( the details of which her nana does not know   but her parents know ) . Sachin is also a fast learner and he picks up the pointers from his sister – though refrains to demand time on computer as a derference to her sister.
The kids earlier played cards with their parents ( while dinner was being prepared by their nani aided at times by their mom and also by kids .
After dinner, the adults played a card game   ”   Whist – Chokdi ”   whilethe kids were busy enjoying kiddie ( Paddington)   movie on the computer .     So the evening ended and by 8.00 pm they were all gone back to Mackey.
Monday 16 February 2015
It seems that   this   being a Family day in Ontario ( being funny here) – Kieran had some fun time and showed a bit of independence   and a small milestone in his growth (being now 11 months old)   –   his dad sent an e-mail ( same date as 16 February 2015)   with a photo –   and giving a   title   ”   Kieran joins the Toilet paper club ” – Kieran geting hold of a toilet roll in the bathroom – brings it out in the passage and then tears the paper in bits and pieces – having fun and showing on his face an achievement .
His grandma (in Toronto – with whom earlier Kieran/Maya had spent Valentine night — then responded with her e-mail   (same date) as below:
”   By the way, he went through a box of Kleenex at my house on Saturday. “
To that –   his Bapuji (in Deep River) responded (same date) – as below:
”     Well , it seems a courageous independent thinking – a small milestone in
his growth.     Now nothing will be spared – specially paper products. ”
Saturday 21 February 2015
This day , Kieran’s dad sent an e-mail along with his photo   – e- mail titled ” Kieran loving Mohawk   “
Here is what he wrote:
Kieran really loves the giraffe, Mohawk, you gave him for Christmas. In fact on three occasions he has said “gi-rah” when looking at giraffes. Coincidence? Language? Who knows. I can hope.Maya also says, “bring some snow pants” when you come in March.
So the name   “Mohawk” was given to the   stuffed animal – due to a good “mane” that the animal has.
Most important news is that Kieran has started mouthing real words   – like   ” on three occasions he has said “gi-rah” when looking at giraffes. “
Talking with Kieran’s dad on Sunday 22 February 2015 – it was noted that Kieran is becoming confident standing up – albeit holding onto something , and then walking holding onto something and have started climbing the stairs   (needing   always a watchful eye) . The stairs are blocked with gates – thus Kieran is protected when the adults are not around.
Kieran also babbles a lot – trying to communicate – thus he calls out to “gi-rah” – his pet stuffed giraffe .
This day Sunday 22 February 2015 , in the morning Maya went for her gym session with her dad and then for ice skating in the evening.
Sunday 22 February 2015

Sitara’s mom posted the following on her Facebook page.

Sitara quote as she jumped up and down tonight “I didn’t know math could be so fun!!”.

Wow! Sitara – you are giving nana a very substantial joy – for your comment on the   ” math” being fun   . I always found that when I was young.

Tuesday 24 February 2015
This day – there was a program at Mackenzie Community School in Deep River   – to present “merit” certificates to deserving students . Sitara was to receive a Certificate for being ” caring”   in her class and so was Sachin in his class . Both nana/nani were to attend the presentation .
But unfortunately that did not happen   – as nana took ill ( apparently he lost his memory for a short time) – and kids’ nani noticed that just about lunch time   and thus instead of going over to the School ( the program was to start at 2.30 pm) , nana was taken to the Emergency Department of the Deep River and Area Hospital . Nana was kept at the Hospital (under observation and few tests   – blood test and pressure checking   . Finally the attending doctor thought – may be it was an impact of possibly low   “sugar levels ” – nana being diabetic ( Type II )     or could be a TIA (   transient ischaemic attack ) effect.
NOTE:   The symptoms of a TIA are similar to that of stroke, but they may only last a short while, certainly no more than 24 hours. If symptoms last longer than 24 hours but are mild usually this would be defined as a ”˜minor stroke”™.
The terms ”˜TIA”™, ”˜minor stroke”™ and ”˜mini stroke”™ were used by people to describe what they had experienced, based on the diagnosis they had been given by their GP or consultant.
Luckily, for nana it remained for a few hours . However, the physician(s) thought it was a better / safer to get a CT scan in Pembroke Hospital – which was requested ( inter hospital communication) .
Thus nana went (with nani) to Pembroke Hospital next day   (on Wednesday 25 February 2015) and had the CT scan carried out.   There was no issue -shown by the scan – as per Nana’s doctor who got the results the same day within a short time.   Note: Kids’ mom currently work at the Pembroke Hospital   –   as a   ” locum ” Pharmacist.
Of course both kids (Sitara and Sachin) each one of them got a Certificate for being “caring” in   their class and school. Fortunately, their dad was at the presentation   (their mom being at work in Pembroke at the time).   Congratulations !
Well, after work kids’ mom came over to Deep River , visited nana at the hospital and as the situation was under control – she decided tp proceed to her “Art -painting class ” in Petawawa   after kids’ skating session at the Deep River Arena   and having dinner at nana/nani home   – nani had already prepared the dinner ( Lasanza)   before lunch .
Nina came home in Deep River after 9.30 p.m with a painting she had drawn and painted                           ( beautiful – well done ) with white orchard flowers .     She spent the nite at Deep River – just to be close by her dad – if any need arises.
Note: nana had also completed a poem for celebrating the 1st birthday of the grandson (Kieran) in Toronto –   . This was prior to the situation he got into for   ” lowered blood sugar “- which ended up taking him to ER at the Deep River Hospital.
Thursday 26 February 2015
This day kids came for dinner at nana/nani home after their skating session at the Deep River Arena. They came with their parents .     The dinner visit for to-day was arranged   as they did not come on Tuesday ( due to nana’s health -see above) but now nana was feeling much better and thus kids wanted to spend time with him.
After the dinner, kids were busy with their homework and then a   bath – after that Sitara came over where nana was sitting in the living room ( with the Samsung Galaxy Tablet )   – that he got recently.   Sitara took the tablet and wanted to access her Google Drive account to show her nana what she has achieved within that space. However, she was not announced as the user on the Tablet – So her dad fixed that and then Sitara was showing her nana what she has done – like organising art pieces   (accessed by her from the internet ) etc.   and then she accessed o You Tube – some songs that she has been looking at (presumably as part of her school project)   . Lo Behold! she then started singing a song – so beautiful voice –   while following the song on the Samsung Tablet.   That was very refreshing to nana and made him proud of Sitara’s ability/talent.
Nana had also spent time with Sachin – playing with him – with   his “paper aeroplane” – that he had made.
Friday   27 February 2015
On Friday (27 February 2015) they went ( driven by parents) to Ottawa – so they can go to the show   – Disney On Ice presents Worlds of Fantasy at   the Canadian Tire Centre in Ottawa .
Note: Its a non-stop fun with four of Kids favourite Disney stories when   Disney On Ice   presents Worlds of Fantasy – this is one-of-a-kind skating spectacular.
———————-
Commentary:

The on-ice excitement begins when an adventurous Mickey Mouse embarks on a journey with Minnie Mouse to uncover each world of fantasy, but the plan goes awry when their cherry red roadster unexpectedly breaks down. Although Donald Duck and Goofy try, it takes the assistance of the coolest cars on the ice to get the pistons firing again. Direct from Radiator Springs, Mater, Lightning McQueen and Sally speed into action, zipping and zooming around the frozen highway in an effort to re-energize the roadster.

As Mickey and Minnie’s road trip continues, the whimsical scenery transforms the arena into an environment that captures the essence of each unique world to follow. Fluorescent coral and clam shell drums embody Ariel’s world in The Little Mermaid and audiences enter the colourful fantasy land of fairies for the Tinker Bell segment.

The toys are back in town during the second act of Worlds of Fantasy, which brings together all the fun, humour and warmth of the beloved Disney Pixar film Toy Story 3. Woody, Jessie, Buzz Lightyear and the rest of the familiar gang hit the ice for the ultimate Toy Story experience.

Worlds of Fantasy offers the perfect combination of elements for fans of Disney On Ice. “From the contemporary feel of Cars and Toy Story 3 to the timeless quality of The Little Mermaid and Tinker Bell, audiences will see four completely different Disney worlds brought to life,” says producer Kenneth Feld. “All of this provides a value that is truly unparalleled in the world of live family entertainment. More than ever before, there’s something for everyone

———————

After the show , their mom posted photos and commentary   for the Sitara and Sachin’s   participation in the fun   ( the posting was done after Friday mid-night / early saturday )

for Sitara she wrote ( accompanied by a photo) :

Queen Elsa (Sitara) commanding the Green Army Men from Toy Story 3 at Disney on Ice tonight

Sitara standing on a table   dressed in her Princess dress (bluish /peacocky color top   – over   a white   dress   under ) – and in front on the dance floor – Green Army men were dancing .

Commentary Note : The Green Army Men were Andy’s  200 miniature green plastic soldiers, led by Sarge .

In Toy Story, the Green Army Men are sent on a mission to spy on  Andy’s  birthday presents so that the other toys can be prepared for any new arrival

In Toy Story 3, the Green Army Men are seen during old home videos and a photo with Andy playing with them like he normally did.

At the end of the movie, the Green Army Men finally land in a playground at  Sunnyside Daycare.  Barbie and  Ken, now leaders of Sunnyside, walk over to greet them. Ken salutes the soldiers as Barbie directs them to the  sandbox, inviting them to join the party. It is possible that the Green Army Men have settled at Sunnyside under Barbie and Ken’s leadership. That night, they are seen standing on the ceiling lights in the Butterfly Room, lowering a disco ball under Sarge’s command for Bookworm to light it up with his flashlight so the Sunnyside toys can enjoy a disco that is held in the room.

———————

for Sachin she wrote ( accompanied by a photo) :

Sachin as “Oct-Timus” Prime sans mask

Sachi was posing (in   front) with “Oct-Timus” characters   in his   ” Oct-timus”   outfit

Commentary Note : It should be read as   ” Optimus ” prime .

Optimus Prime is a fictional character from the  Transformers franchise. Prime is the leader of the Autobots, a faction of transforming robots from the planet Cybertron. The Autobots are constantly waging war against a rival faction of transforming robots called Deceptions. He is depicted as a brave, powerful, wise and compassionate leader who puts his talent to use improving the universe around him.

Sunday 01 March 2015

This day, the kids participated in a downhill ski competition at Mount Molson Club in Petawawa.       It was   a team effort competition.   The kids went there accompanied by their parents .

—————-

NOTE:   Mount Molson – It may be a small ski hill – but it sure has a strong following and great opportunities for newbies to the more seasoned skier and snowboarder.

On a peak overlooking the Ottawa River, Mount Molson boasts a vertical drop of only 125 feet. However, it has become synonymous with alpine skiing and has grown a reputation as one of Ontario’s smallest ski hills.

—————

The team in whch each kid was part of – won a gold medal   . So Sitara’s team won a gold medal and also Sachin team wao a gold medal .

Both nana/nani are proud of the kids for participating and their team winning the competition – for their age group.   Congratulations!

After skiing at Mount Molson – the family went for fun downhill skiing at Mount Martin Ski Club in Deep River .   It seems all of them have good energy/stamina   for such duo activities.   – 2 hills in   day.

Sunday 01 March 2015

Blast from the past – Maya looked very regal ( in the photo sent by her mom) wearing a dress made by her great -grandma ( Opal in Huntsville, Ontario) .

Here is what her mom said in the e-mail sent   on 1 March 2015 – titled: The family dress.

” Here is Maya wearing a dress made by her great-grandmother and previously worn by her mother and aunts. Interestingly, she is also playing with a toy phone that belonged to Sunir as a child, so this is a true “blast from the past” photo! “

Maya is a link in the the family chain.

Tuesday   03 March 2015

Today marks a milestone in Kieran’s life.   He is stepping out into the larger world.

He started his advancement in life by joining in a daycare (in the neighbourhood) just before his 1st Birthday ( on 12 March 2015)   – a daycare where his sister goes since last couple of years.   Note: Last year Maya was going only for few days/week as her mom as at home ( from having Kieran)

Here is an e-mail dated 3 March 2015 from his mom – titled : Starting daycare.

” As of this week, Maya is back in daycare full-time in the preschool room and Kieran has started in the infant room. Here he is checking out some of the new toys at daycare. Today I dropped him off for three hours and he did very well (I also coped, by the way!) He cried for a couple minutes at drop-off but then settled down, played, ate lunch, etc. He is now sleeping soundly… I think all the excitement tired him out! ”
Well done, Kieran.

a Historical note:   Kieran – your dad (when he was your age) was just keen to go to daycare (school) – and was not at all scared or emotional .   Though your Ba was (emotional and cried for a few hours – feeling lonely)   – losing the day company of her young baby son Sunir.

Thursday 05 March 2015

This day kids (Sitara and Sachin) came over to nana/nani home with their parents -after their ice skating session at the Arena in Deep River .   This was good as nana/nani are planning to go to Toronto (to spend some time with Maya and Kieran ) on coming Saturday and they would be gone for a few days ( at least a week or 10 days) and kids would then not be able to be with their nana/nani for some days.

All had dinner and then spent fabulous time together.   Sachin did his homework with nana ( reading three (3) school reading books ) and then playing with nani with his ”   paper aeroplane -oragami ) . This guy has a mechanical mind.

Sitara had brought with her –   her comicbook   – “Archie”. This is nana’s   favouite Comic book – since when he was young . So nana was pleasantly surprised that Sitara is already into reading and enjoying thiss comic book.   she had been reading this comic book (on and off)   since about last two years.     The upshot of this is that She spent time with nana and had nana read the book with her.         It was fun.

Sitara also worked on her school homework on the computer – now being able to get to her site through Mozilla Firefox medium . She is so comfortable using nana’s computer – all by herself as she had been using this comptuer since last few years.   She also knows how to send an e-mail message ( which she does to her her mom)   – this evening she was showing her nani how she does that. She also asked he nani if she has an e-mail account.   Her nani has an e-mail account established with “google” on the Samsung Galaxy 4 tablet ( recently her mom obtained from Ottawa as requsted by her nana/nani) . Her nani will give Sitaar her e-mail address when nana/nani return from Toronto   visit to Maya and Kieran.

Then their time came to go home (to Mackey) and were gone at about 8.30 pm.

——————

Note:

Though they were at nana/nani home on Monday ( 2 March 2015) for dinner   – picked up by nana/nani from their baby-sitter’s (Jeannett)   home at 4.45 p.m   ( their parents having gone to Calabogie for the day – skiing ) .

They had a great time playing/intefacing with their nana/nani. Sachin having done his homework (in the company of his nana) – reading his books   (2 of these) and Sitara on thw computer . These days she has an account on Google Draw (from the school)   – however she did not work on her homework at that site as access was somehow not allowed by using Internet Explorer medium.

She managed to get to the site (and do her homework) after her parents arrived (back from Calabogie at about 8.00 pm)   – this time her dad helped   (tried using the Mozilla Firefox medium – and it worked ). It seems the Internet Explorer has difficulties these days -and thus nana had also switched over to Mozilla Firefox medium for most of his computer needs.

The kids then   were driven home in Mackey by their parents   at about 9.00 pm .

Saturday   07 March 2015

Maya’s and Kieran’s Ba/Bapuji   ( i.e   Sitara/Sachin’s nana/nani) will be travelling to Toronto   for visit and spending some time with Maya and Kieran – and celebarting Kieran’s first birthday .

————————–

Ba/Bapuji’s Visit to Toronto – between Saturday 07 March 2015 and Tuesday 17 March 2015

Grandparents Joy

This visit to Toronto was planned earlier at the request of   our son Sunir – as during that week he was to go to USA ( Austin, Texas) and also Shannon (our daughter-in-law) was preparing for a job interview at a Health Center in Oshawa , Ontario .  The timing of this job interview was such that Sunir would be away to USA .   Our going there would help to ease the load on their shoulders and relieve a bit of stress for caring of the grandchildren and looking after the household.

In any case , this was  a great moment   to spend time with our two grandchildren (Maya and Kieran) in Toronto whom we have not seen since the Christmas 2014 – when they had all come to Deep River to celebrate holidays with their grandparents and cousins (Sitara and Sachin).   This was also an opportune time to go – first to go away from the deep chill of Deep River  (winter temperatures in below teens ) but further it was a celebratory time in the family   – our grandson Kieran’s first birthday coming up on Thursday 12 March 2015 .

So we (the grandparents) got all readied , packed our luggage and sundries and drove (in our maroon 2001 Dodge minivan) on Saturday 07 March 2015 to go to Toronto.  It was a clear day and roads were excellent for the drive and thus we arrived at Sunir/Shannon home in Toronto at just after 4.00 pm   as planned.

Saturday 07 March 2015

Arrived safely in Toronto at about 4.00 p.m

Kieran has nine teeth – 5 top and 4 bottom

Maya – a bubbly girl as ever

Maya had earlier in the day gone to view a Robot Competition at Maple Leaf Gardens – with her dad

All had dinner together .

After dinner and after the kids had gone tio bed- the adults played cards ( ” Chokdi ” – a sort of Whist game)

Note:   The classic game of whist is a plain-trick game without bidding for 4 players in fixed partnerships.

Sunday 08 March 2015

Both Maya and Kieran were cheerful when they came down   (from their bedroom) in the morning . Maya worked with her mom to decorate the   Dining area with streamers and balloons – all getting ready for celebrating Kieran’s 1st Birthday – though a few days earlier as Kieran’s dad was to travel to USA early morning of 12 March 2015 .

Wow- Kieran was in the celebratory element – he played with balloons and with his big stuffed dog – his favourite. Maya was also vey playful and going hither and thither – and then also tried to play a game of ‘Go Fish” with her Bapuji but ended up playing the game with her mom instead.   One hour of morning was so splendid – both kids all excited (and enjoying themselves) to have their Ba/Bapuji and also to decorate the Dining Room for the Birthday Party in the evening

At 11.00 am – Maya’s dad took her for her weekly Gym class at Barbara Frum Center in the Multi-Purpose Room . Ba/Bapuji also joined in to watch Maya doing her Gym activities.   Ba took some photos of Maya in her Gym activities. Shannon stayed home with Kieran. Maya got a Certificate for her attendance at the Pre-nursery Gymnasium.

At 3.00 pm (after lunch) , Maya went to the Park with her Ba to the play area -across the road from the house -while Kieran went out in stroller with his mom for fresh air.

In the evening of Sunday (at 5.00 pm) – guests started arriving for celebrating Kieran’s Birthday. His Grandma and   Grandpa (Doug and Kathy) came and also his Heather Auntie and Ryan Uncle along with their 5 month old son (Cole) . Cole is Kieran’s ( & Maya’s) cousin.  All had a good party. Kids played and enjoyed the balloons and the cake ( baked by their mom)   .       After the party was over, the relatives went to their home . Maya and Kieran were got ready for bed.

Monday 09 March 2015

This is the day Shannon started to go to her work – after 1 year of absence (for baby care) . Sunir took both kids to their baby care place ( North Younger Daycare) – by walking . This is Kieran’s first year at a   babycare. He seems to have adjusted himself well .

This day the lady (Alice – a Kenyan lady ) came for   domestic   clean-up help at about 9.30 am – for a few hours .   At that time Ba/Bapuji went away from home to the town (on Yonge Street) – so as to not to be a hindrance to Alice’s work.

At the end of the day (about 5.00 pm) Kids were picked up from the daycare by their mom (after work) on her way home.

Tuesday 10 March 2015

This day Ba went with kids’ dad to drop the kids at the daycare   . All went walking to the daycare.   Of course Maya in the stroller and Kieran being snuggly held by his dad.

At the end of the day (about 5.00 pm) Kids were picked up from the daycare by their mom (after work) on her way home.

Ba/Bapuji spent afternoon – going to play duplicate Bridge on Glen park Av. (off Bathurst Road)

After dinner, Ba played a couple of games with Maya . One of the   games was ” Go Fish” card game. Maya knows the rules and how to play very well. After the games, she was happy and went herself to brush her teeth and then went upstairs for sleep.

Wednesday 11 March 2015

This day also Ba went with kids’ dad to drop the kids at the daycare   . All went walking to the daycare.   Of course Maya in the stroller and Kieran being snuggly held by his dad.

Again – Ba/Bapuji spent afternoon – going to play duplicate Bridge on Glen park Av. (off Bathurst Road)

At the end of the day (about 5.00 pm) Kids were picked up from the daycare by their Grandma (Kathy) as she was on her way to a dinner at their friends in the neighbourhood – this allowing Kids’ mom a bit of relaxed time when returning from work .

After dinner, the kids played with Ba/Bapuji before going upstairs for sleep.

Thursday 12 March 2015

Happy   1st Birthday , dear Kieran – your Ba/Bapuji were glad to be in Toronto to celebrate the occasion.

However this day was a hectic one – first Kieran’s dad had to leave for Austin, Texas at 11.00 am to attend a business conference – of which his dad was one of the organisers and to complicate that one –   Kieran’s mom had a very busy day – she had an interview with a Health Unit in Oshawa , Ontario for a position of a Developmental Pediatrician – the job she is looking forward to start after completing her present advanced study in   pediatrics.

Both kids were dropped at the Daycare in the morning by her mom (by walking) and after that she got ready to drive to Oshawa by noon.   Both kids were picked up from the Daycare by their mom – after she had arrived back from Oshawa – at about 4.00 pm

Though Kieran’s birthday party was already held on Sunday 8 March 2015 and much celebration was had at that time .

For his actual birthday (that is today) – his Ba had a cake already baked from Deep River – which Maya helped to decorate with candy sprinklers and putting on a special candle   on the cake. This cake was cut in the evening and shared .    Also the house was filled with noises from various “kazoos” – Maya was   great trumpeter.

Kieran’s cousin Cole had come along with his mom      ( Heather – Kieran/Maya ‘s Auntie) to celebrate once again Kieran’s Birthday. Kieran’s Grandma (Kathy) had also come -and later his Grandpa (Doug) also joined in .

Note: All these day when Ba/bapuji were in Toronto – it as noted that Maya likes wearing   a cape over shoulders – different   ones – some she makes by herself .

Friday 13 March 2015

Kieran and Maya were dropped by her mom to the daycare – this day they were driven by their mom in their Subaru Outback car – as Shannon started her Advanced study (after an absence for   a year to nurse baby Kieran) .   Both were picked up from the daycare earlier by their mom – as it was the day for Kieran’s check-up with his doctor and also to get vaccination shots ( 2 ) – One for mumps and the other for meningitis . well Kieran took it well (though painful) – one shot in each arm .

Saturday 14 March 2015

This day Maya went to participate in her weekly activity at the “Construction Junction “.  In the afternoon – Maya went to attend a birthday party (driven by her mom) .

At both times – Kieran stayed home (mostly napping ) with his Ba/Bapuji to keep a babysitting watch.     As noted – kids’ dad was still in Austin , USA.

Bapuji read a book to Maya and played a board game with Maya prior to her going to the Birthday party.

—————–

Note:   Girls and boys go beyond just blocks in Construction Junction. This advanced art program lets children learn how to plan, build, and construct their own 3-D art projects! Roads, towers, monuments, and pyramids are just a sample of the structures to be introduced, imagined, and created with wood, collage, cloth, clay, and more.

The Construction Junction class is 45 minutes long. There are 16 weeks in the session.

Ages: 3 to 5 years

Sunday 15 March 2015

Maya had another birthday party to attend in the morning . Two (2) Birthday parties in a weekend. And the evening all went – by walking   (of course Maya was in a stroller and Kieran was /harnessed / held by her mom)   – to Doug/Kathy (kid’s grandparents in Toronto) home for a dinner . All had a great time and after walking back home – the kids were tired and ready for sleep.

Monday  16 March 2015

The routine of kids being dropped to the daycare in the morning by their mom (in the car) and then having been picked up from the daycare in the evening was in place.

Both Ba/Bapuji spent the day at home with leisure and relaxation – though Ba was slightly occupied preparing dinner.

Kids dad arrived back home from Austin, USA (after a slight delay in the plane at Chicago)   at midnight

Tuesday 17 March 2015

Both kids were excited to see their dad .   Again, they were dropped to Daycare.

Ba/Bapuji left Toronto to return to Deep River ( en route via The Briars at Jackson’s Point, Ontario) .

NRT – Letter to Editor- Why we should celebrate 2014 Christmas ?

The following article was published in the North Renfrew Times (Deep River) on its weekly Wednesday edition dated 10 December, 2014

——————————–

07 December, 2014

Why we should celebrate 2014 Christmas ?

The time has come for the 2014 Christmas and festivities and we are getting in the mood to celebrate the good times.

This is the time of year when we unburden ourselves from all the worldly worries/pain and think about and thank for the   gifts God has showered on us over the whole year – notwithstanding some difficulties and obstacles experienced.

Within family , many of us are fortunate to enjoy the family members and their achievements and accomplishments but more important are the grandchildren who give us unlimited love and joy.

We were overjoyed when our grandchildren participated in this year’s   Deep River Santa parade . They were angels – unencumbered with worldly worries and strife.

Personally , I have passed the year peacefully/happily   and with a normally good health for a senior though with advancing age I had my moments. I am sure my wife survived my occasional shenanigans and deficiencies .

As a community,   we welcomed the newly elected   Municipal Council members and a new   Mayor for the town. We are hopeful that they will execute their responsibilities with aplomb and seriousness   and work to streamline expenses so that the actual Property Taxes are reduced .   Deep River Property Taxes are becoming a burden for all but   mostly for the seniors – whether on pension or not.

In Canada we had the attack on our Parliament.    A series of shootings occurred on October 22, 2014, in Ottawa.   At the   Canadian national War Memorial   Corporal Nathan Cirillo, a Canadian soldier on ceremonial   sentry duty was shot dead .

On October 20, 2014, Martin Couture-Rouleau   deliberately rammed a car into a group of two Canadian Armed Forces   soldiers in a shopping centre parking lot in   Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec .  Patrice Vincent   lost his life from this attack.

But we Canadians have weathered these events   with great solemnity and without any   generalisation of blame on any community/race/nationality /religion .

That is the spirit of Christmas – when we do not go into the blame game but take rational steps to diffuse the situation.

Yes,   at times we need to sacrifice and hold our anger and frustration and   look to our Creator for solace and guidance in life.

The baby born in Bethlehem fulfilled His destiny to offer himself as a sacrifice for our sins.

His life needs to be celebrated with all the commitment for service and good of the society.

The message is clear – whether one is a Christian by faith or not   – the life of Lord Jesus and His actions were for correcting the injustices but with peace and love – that is the only way – otherwise   ” taking an eye for an eye ” will make us all blind.

That is the reason for celebrating Christmas   – not for worldly gifts/toys/electronics/etc but for   a reminder /renewal of love and sacrifice for good of all.

The basic and most telling messages behind both the biblical (religious) and fictional (Santa Claus) stories of Christmas are the virtuous elements of humanity: goodwill, kindness, caring, compassion, and giving.

7 Kheer Recipes

Kheer is the classic Indian dessert that is often cooked during festivals or special occasions. It is in true sense the dessert cooked in almost all the parts of Indian subcontinent. There are many different varieties of kheer. The classic kheer recipe consists of milk, sugar and boiled rice. However there are many different varieties cooked with broken wheat or vermicelli or sago. This rich rice pudding is flavored with cardamom, raisins, saffron, cashew nuts, pistachios or almonds.

1) Kashmiri Kheer
It is a milk Kheer, prepared using traditional Kashmiri method and ingredients.

ingredients

White Rice :-  150 gms

Milk :- 1 Ltr.

Whole Milk Powder :- 8 tbsp.

tools required

Knife
Pressure Cooker

preparation method

Soak the rice in clean water for almost 2 hours before cooking it.
Soak dry almonds, dates and cashew nuts in warm water for at least an hour.
Pare the coconut using a knife and shave it into small pieces.
Steam the raisins and wash all the ingredients before using them.
Take a bowl and fill 1/4th of the bowl with raisins, cashew nuts and almond kernels. Keep it aside.
Mix the milk powder with 1 cup of milk in another bowl.
Boil the milk in the body of the pressure cooker. Soak the water from the rice and add it to the milk in the pressure cooker.
Stir the mixture well and close it.
Develop maximum pressure and then reduce the heat and cook for 15 minutes.
Remove cooker from heat and add sugar. Now, put the open cooker back on the heat and keep stirring it.
Add almond kernels, date, raisins, coconut and cashew nuts while you are stirring the mixture. Cook the mixture for at least 10 mins.
Now, add the milk and milk powder mixture to the kheer and keep stirring it.
Cook for 5 minutes until the nuts turn soft and a homogenous mixture of kheer is ready.
Remove the cooker from the stove, cool and serve it cold.

Serving Suggestions

Garnish the kheer with grinded pistachio nuts and saffron. Add the Kewra essence while serving it. Sprinkle green cardamom/black cardamom powder after serving it in the bowl.

  • I used low fat milk. U can use whole milk or full fat milk to make the dish more rich.
  • Saffron can be used instead of cardamom powder. Color of this payasam will be in yellow side. If u add more milk at the end , u”™ll get the white color..

3) Chocolate Kheer
This one’s for the generation who loves fusion. It’s a very easy recipe.

I have added cocoa powder and drinking chocolate powder to add chocolaty flavor to kheer. But there is one ingredient that goes really well with kheer as well: Nutella! You have to try the nutella flavored kheer. It just taste yummy. The recipe to make nutella kheer is exactly similar to this chocolate kheer recipe. Instead of cocoa powder, drinking chocolate just add Nutella. The hazelnut chocolate flavor tastes superb in this dessert.

Let us check the step by step recipe for Chocolate Kheer.

Step by step Chocolate Kheer Recipe

1. We need very few ingredients for this chocolate kheer recipe. Basmati rice, milk, cocoa powder and drinking chocolate powder. Alternatively instead of chocolate you can also add Nutella. I love the hazelnut chocolate flavor of Nutella in kheer. Rinse the rice thoroughly till the water runs without starch. Boil the water in a pressure cooker for 15 minutes

2. In a deep pan pour the milk and add sugar to it. Let the milk gets boil once and simmer it for another 5 minutes. In between stir the milk while its boiling to avoid spilling.

3. Once the milk is boiling for 5 minutes or so, add cocoa powder and drinking chocolate powder and stir well.

4. Add the boiled basmati rice in the boiling milk and let it simmer for 15 minutes.

The tasty chocolate kheer is ready to serve. Pour the chocolate kheer in serving bowls/glasses and garnish it with some chocolate chips and serve it hot, warm or chilled.

4) Chaler Payesh – Bengali Rice Kheer

INGREDIENTS

  • Milk – 1 litre
  • Basmati or Jeera rice – 1/3 cup (Use Gobindo bhog for best taste)
  • Sugar – 1/3 – 1/2 cup
  • Cardamom – 4 pods
  • Nuts n dry fruits ”“ to garnish
  • Ghee ”“ 2 tsp (optional)
  • Bayleaf – 2 nos
  • Salt – A pinch

METHOD

  • Boil milk in a wide bowl and when it starts to roll boil, add bay leaf and slightly crushed cardamom pods
  • Wash the rice and add to the milk.Allow it to boil in low to medium flame till rice gets cooked well but it should be firm & soft without losing its shape.Generally rice takes longer time to cook.So keep mixing every now and then and make sure it is not burnt in the bottom. When the milk gets evaporated add little water whenever necessary.
  • When the rice is almost cooked, remove bay leaf(optional) & add sugar,a pinch of salt & mix well.Let it boil till the mixture thickens slightly.

——————–

  • The consistency of this payesh should be thick. So make it accordingly.
  • I removed the bay leaf before adding sugar by following sanjeev kapoor”™s video. If u wish,u can keep it till the end.
  • I felt jeera rice gives more flavour than Basmati rice for this payesh. But its purely ur choice.

Enjoy this thick, chilled, creamy bengali payesh. It tastes yumm !!

5) Paneer Kheer
This one could be the best find of the day.

Paneer Payasam (Chenna Payash) Recipe

Preparation time: 2 minutes
Cooking time: 10 minutes
Serves 2-4 people

Ingredients:
3/4 cup of crumbled paneer (here’s how you can make paneer at home)
2 cups of milk (I used low fat)
1/4 cup of sweetened condensed milk (adjust to taste)
2 of green cardamom pods
1/2 tsp of sugar
A few strands of saffron for garnish (optional)
A few pistachios (or almond slivers)

How to Make Paneer Payasam

1. Powder the cardamom seeds with the 1/2 tsp sugar until fine. I don’t like biting into chunky cardamom seeds so I pound it fine. If you have powdered cardamom in hand, just omit the sugar and use a bit of that.

2. In a pan, bring the milk to boil on low heat.

3. Add the condensed milk and mix well.

4. Bring to boil again and then add the powdered cardamom.

5. Crumble paneer as fine as you can with your fingertips…

… and add it to the boiling milk. Stir well to combine. Let it simmer for about 5 minutes more. Test for sweetness and adjust the amount of milk/condensed milk as desired. You need to have enough liquid base for the paneer to swim in so keep an eye on the consistency. These proportions worked great for me.

——-

That’s it! You can serve it hot but personally we prefer it chilled for a couple of hours. So bring the payesh to room temperature and then chill in the refrigerator.

Oh, and if you want to add saffron, add it at the end when the payesh is hot.

Garnish with pistachios before serving. The payesh looks very dull on it’s own and doesn’t convey how delicious it is without the help of the pistachios 😉

6) Shavige Payasam
This one is a special vermicelli kheer from the land of Karnataka.

Shavige payasa/Vermicelli kheer recipe

INGREDIENTS

  • Roasted Vermicelli/Shavige/Semiya – 1/2 cup (100 gms)
  • Boiled milk ”“ 2.5 cups
  • Water ”“ 1 cup
  • Sugar – 1/2 cup
  • Crushed cardamom – 2 nos
  • Cashewnuts and dry grapes – a fistful
  • Saffron threads – few (optional)
  • MTR Badam powder – 1 tsp (optional)

METHOD

  • Heat 1 tbsp of ghee in a pan.Roast cashews & Dry grapes.When grapes turn bulgy,remove & keep in a plate.
  • In the same ghee, roast the vermicelli even if its roasted. It will enhance the taste.
  • Mix well and boil for few minutes till all the sugar dissolves.Add the remaining milk & MTR powder if using.Boil for few minutes.
  • Lastly add cardamom powder, roasted cashews & dry grapes.Switch off the flame. This payasa will thicken once its cooled down.So adjust the quantity of milk. Refrigerate, cool n serve OR serve warm as u like.

————–

Enjoy !

Note

  • Adjust the quantity of milk as per the desired consistency.
  • U can also add 2 tbsp of condensed milk or khova to get a rich taste. In that case reduce the quantity of sugar.
  • Adding MTR badam powder is optional. But i have tasted in some of my friend”™s houses. It tastes great with a nice flavor.

7) Chak – Hao Kheer
Or simply known as Manipuri Black Rice Kheer. It looks as exotic as it tastes.

Black rice is an excellent source of fibre, amino acids, minerals, vitamins, and antioxidants. Its colour changes to dramatic purple when cooked, so it is also known as “Purple Rice”. The purple color is due to the anthocyanins present in the rice which act as antioxidants. In China and some South-East Asian countries, it is commonly known as “Forbidden Rice”, as it was reserved exclusively for royalty in ancient China.

Coming to the recipe….

1/4 cup Black rice

125 ml milk ( full fat)

1/4 tsp Cardamon powder

Sugar to taste

Rinse the rice and soak for about 5-6 hours.

Drain the rice and transfer to a pot .

Add milk.

Cook on very slow fire making sure to stir it once in a while.

Cook till the rice is done, you could add more milk, if the rice absorbs this milk.

Adjust the milk according to the consistency of the kheer that you require.

Add sugar , raisins and cardamon powder.

Serve hot or cold.

The rice has a sweet nutty flavor and you actually do not need any nuts, though I added some raisins.

Chak-Hao kheer is served during all festivals and celebrations.

Grandparents – 2014- 4th Quarter

Well the October started with few new development in the kids’ lives.

First , both Sitara and Sachin had a sleep over on Monday and Tuesday ( 29 & 30 September, 2014)   at nana/nani place – since their dad was going   to Pembroke for office meetings (of managers) held there – for which he had to go early and be there by 8.00 am. This way it is easier on the kids to get ready in the mornings for the school.

Then the family had dinner everyday at nana/nani place till Friday evening   ( 3 October, 2014)   – Friday evening was rather a surprise -as dark clouds were in the sky and thunderstorm kind of   disrupted power supply at Mackey – thus though the kids went to Mackey after school with   their mom BUT had to turn back to Deep River as there was no electricity at Mackey home .

Well boths kids had great time at nana/nani place and nana/nani had good times with them.

In fact Sitara had blown two baloons ( on Thursday   (2 October, 2014)   evening -when nana/nani had gone out to play Bridge card game at Deep River Lawn Bowling Club )

– one for nana and one for nani and left each separately in nana/nani bedroom as a gift with a written note attached to each baloon –     e.g. for nana – Guess ?       and for nani   Guess ?   ( i.e. she wanted us to guess who left the gift) . So thoughtful and it was very kind of Sitara to remember hernana/nani.

e-mail from Shannon on Sunday 5 October, 2014

It has been an emotional roller coaster weekend here, with my grandfather’s funeral yesterday and Heather and Ryan’s son born at 4am today. She made it back from Huntsville 30 minutes before her water broke! Cole Michael Murphy weighed in at 8lb 1oz and both he and Heather are doing well. Here are some photos of Cole (on the “inside” on Friday and on the “outside” this morning) with his cousins.

Wednesday 1 October, 2014

This day – the start of the new month – was a bit unfortunate one as both Maya and Kieran lost their great- grandfather (Ray in Huntsville, Ontario ) – their mom’s maternal grandfather .

The   following posting on 2 October, 2014 at 2.07 pm by Shannon on her Facebook page   – give out the news :

Saying goodbye to my grandfather, who died yesterday at age 90. I’m so lucky to have had him in my life and I’m glad both my kids got to meet him too. xo

Both Maya and Kieran were fortunate that were able to spend some time with their great-grandfather.

That it was indeed a gift for the great-grandpa to meet his   precious grandchildren. That connection between the oldest and youngest generation is an invisible thread that can’t be broken, even as our beloved elders leave us.

Then   Sunday 5 October, 2014

Both Kids – Maya and Kieran were excited to welcome their newest cousin – Cole Michael – in this world.

In an e-mail (along with couple of photos – with both Maya and Kieran with Cole and his mom Heather )   dated   5 October 2014   (2:42 PM) their mom had stated:

It has been an emotional roller coaster weekend here, with my grandfather’s funeral yesterday and Heather and Ryan’s son born at 4am today. She made it back from Huntsville 30 minutes before her water broke! Cole Michael weighed in at 8lb 1oz and both he and Heather are doing well. Wednesday 8 October, 2014

Kieran got his first tooth – bottom middle – just popping out .

His mom sent an e-mail (dated 8 October ,2014) with a photo :

If you zoom in on this photo, you can see the tip of Kieran’s first tooth that just popped through on Monday. He will have a toothy grin in no time 🙂

Ba was very excited to learn about this progress.

Saturday 11 October, 2014 to Monday 20 October, 2014

On Saturday 11 October, 2014 –   Ba and Bapuji drove/travelled to Toronto (by their maroon 2001 Dodge Minivan car ) to be with   Maya, Kieran, Shannon and Sunir .   This was Sunir/Shannon wedding Anniversary day and all had celebratory dinner together at their home.     After dinner and after Maya and Kieran were put to bed – both Sunir and Shannon went out to celebrate amongst themselves their anniversary – while Ba and Bapuji   stayed home to watch over the kids.

On Monday morning – Sunir went away to California , USA ( for his business interests) and Ba/Bapuji were remaining with family ( Maya, Kieran and their mom) – to give support,

Ba/Bapuji returned back to Deep River on Monday 20 October, 2014 – this is what Bapuji wrote in an e-mail of the same date (which explains most what happened while they were in Toronto)   – after having returned safely to Deep River.       However it missed out on one important news while we were there – which was that Kieran got his second tooth on Wednesday while we were there.

Also kids had very exciting time with their newest cousin ( Cole )   – mother Heather ( Shannon’s sister).

Hi Shannon/Sunir
Dear Maya
My best friend Kieran

We had a great time in Toronto – achieved all that we wanted to.

We filled the temporary void Sunir left when he went to USA – and we fabulously enjoyed the company of both Maya and Kieran along with their mom.

Both kids are just loving – communicating – loving their Ba and Bapuji – playing with them . Maya even had Bapuji read books to her.

Our bridge afternoon was enjoyable though did not produce any Master Points.

Our Jain Diwali attendance was productive in renewing some past relations -a long with recognition of my past Presidentship -along with others.     Jain Diwali celebartion was on Sunday 19 October, 2014 at Lawrence Convention Center in Mississauga.

I managed to read three books while there.

Nothing beats – personally – my interfaces with kids. I enjoyed many instances with each one of them.

Their Ba has her own stories and fun times . She was more in line looking after them for comfort (when also playing with them) while my time was more/only playing.

Maya was devastated to know about my hearing. She also counted my medicine both in the morning and evening . She will be a good physician.

Our trip back to Deep River was smooth – raining all the way.

We had a great visit with Shannon’s grandmother Opal in Huntsville. She is a very charming lady and has taken recent loss of her husband Ray – in stride and taking the life at it rolls. She is busy helping various causes in Huntsville..

We arrived back in Deep River at 4.15 pm .

love

Thursday 23 October, 2014

Its   our Diwali day.   There was a family   Diwali celebration dinner at Deep River home – when both Sitara and Sachin along with their parents   were participating.

NOTE:   Diwali also known as Deepavali and the “festival of lights“, is an ancient Hindu festival   celebrated in autumn every year. The festival spiritually signifies the victory of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, good over evil, and hope over despair. The festival preparations and rituals typically extend over a five day period, but the main festival night of Diwali coincides with the darkest, new moon night of the Hindu Lunisolar month ” Kartika”   In the Gregorian calender, Diwali night falls between mid-October and mid-November.     Diwali 2014 was on Thursday 23 October, 2014.

Both nana/nani had earlier gone over to Deep River Arena to watch the kids – who had an ice skating session.   Both Sitara and Sachin are skating well though yet at   the earlier part of their skating experience.

After dinner, all had gathered around , had a hugh candle lit ( near the fire place) and with all lights dimmed to darkness (except the candle light) nana played with the kids making scarry sounds and chasing the kids   in the dark.   That then reconstituted in to the usual nana playing a ‘ bad wolf ‘ around a camp/tent made from a blanket   (in the bedroom) and kids hiding in the tent ) – and the bad wolf ( nana) going huffing and puffing to blow the tent away to get to the kids as his meal.   Of course the kids escape using their ingenuity and the bad wolf left with defeat .

After the games – all settled down again in the living room   – whence Sitara was influenced to practice her song ( which she has planned to sing on the stage during Indian Community Diwali Celebration on the coming Saturday at Lions Hall in Chalk River ).

The song she was practicing is ” Let it go ” – from the movie ” Frozen “.

What a fabulous voice she has. Nana was just lappimg it up – her practice singing.

Hopefully she will do great at the Diwali program on Saturday ( 25 October, 2014) .

Note:   the movie   ” Frozen “.

Walt Disney Animation Studios, the studio behind “Tangled” and “Wreck-It Ralph,” presents “Frozen,” a stunning big-screen comedy adventure. Fearless optimist Anna (voice of Kristen Bell) sets off on an epic journey””teaming up with rugged mountain man Kristoff (voice of Jonathan Groff) and his loyal reindeer Sven””to find her sister Elsa (voice of Idina Menzel), whose icy powers have trapped the kingdom of Arendelle in eternal winter. Encountering Everest-like conditions, mystical trolls and a hilarious snowman named Olaf, Anna and Kristoff battle the elements in a race to save the kingdom.

Let It Go Lyrics

“Let It Go” was written by Robert Lopez, Kristen Anderson-lopez.

The snow glows white on the mountain tonight
Not a footprint to be seen.
A kingdom of isolation,
and it looks like I’m the Queen
The wind is howling like this swirling storm inside
Couldn’t keep it in;
Heaven knows I’ve tried

Don’t let them in,
don’t let them see
Be the good girl you always have to be
Conceal, don’t feel,
don’t let them know
Well now they know

Let it go, let it go
Can’t hold it back anymore

Let it go, let it go
Turn away and slam the door
I don’t care
what they’re going to say
Let the storm rage on.
The cold never bothered me anyway

It’s funny how some distance
Makes everything seem small
And the fears that once controlled me
Can’t get to me at all

It’s time to see what I can do
To test the limits and break through
No right, no wrong, no rules for me,
I’m free!

Let it go, let it go
I am one with the wind and sky
Let it go, let it go
You’ll never see me cry
Here I stand
And here I’ll stay
Let the storm rage on

My power flurries through the air into the ground
My soul is spiraling in frozen fractals all around
And one thought crystallizes like an icy blast
I’m never going back, the past is in the past

Let it go, let it go
And I’ll rise like the break of dawn
Let it go, let it go
That perfect girl is gone
Here I stand
In the light of day
Let the storm rage on

The cold never bothered me anyway!

Saturday 25 October, 2014

Siatara was resplendent in her light blue princess dress – with a matching crown on her head. This was   her ‘ performance dress ‘     when going on the stage to sing her   Walt Disney movie   (Frozen) song . It   was the Diwali (2014) function   organised at the Chalk Riverand Area Lions Club by the   ” Deep River- Pembroke ”   East Indian Community.   Her mom was a volunteer to design and have tickets and program published for the event.

Sitara sang beautifully and without any rancour or nervousness – all enjoyed her song. In fact she sang twice   as   it was felt that at the first time the mike was not operating well.   Both times she was superb.

Friday 31 October, 2014

This being the Halloween Day, both Sitara and Sachin came over to Nana/naani home (with their parents ) from the School in Deep River – had a quick dinner (nani made special puri   from sooji flour ) and pancakes for the kids .   While both kids got ready for their ” Trick or Treat” going about in the town with their parents   (Sanjay really dressed himself good – as a green monster )   – their nani had to go over to the Deep River Hospital (driven by their nana) for an emergency – she started to get cramps in hands and feet – both sides and it was looking serious.     In tehe meantime, trick-or treat experience was kept on.     Note: nani was looked over by the emergency doctor and after blood and heart tests – it was founf all was okay and then nani joined in the fun after coming back home.

This is the first Halloween Day for Kieran inToronto. Both Kieran and Maya dressed appropriately and had a “trick or treat ” moment in the neighborhood.   Kiearn had spent the day with his Grandma (Kathy) in Toronto . Here is   an e-mail note (with photos) from his Grandma (dated 31 October, 2014) :

Here is Kieran yesterday at my house. I was babysitting for the day while Shannon went to a seminar – quite a tiring experience but fun. He is a pretty happy boy!
Also two pics taken today at 4:00 when the kids stopped by after Maya’s daycare party. It’s been a wet Halloween here.
Best wishes to you both. Nice to hear you had a little visit with my mom. I am going up to see her next weekend.
xoxo Kathy

Note:   Talking with his parents on phone on Sunday 2 Nov 2014 – it was noted that Kieran has started crawling   now – though backward style .

Saturday 1 November 2014

Nana/nani joined with Sitara and Sachin (along with their parents) in   a dinner at Santa Fe restaurant in Pembroke – it was suddenly decided for such an event .   It was a very pleasnt dinner – watching and being with the kids. Both Sitara and Sachin drew pictures on Santa Fe paper mats – for kids to draw and enter into a contest.       They submited their entry for the contest.   The heart-warming story of the day was Sitara was found reading a book all the time even while walking at the restaurant and before having dinner.   She is so engrossed in reading books that it is really very unusual to see a girl of 7 years old who loves reading.       Good habit Sitara !

Wednesday 5 November 2014

This day was miserable for Sachin – he had temperature and threw up.     Hewas nursed at home by his dad – Nina working .     This health situation did not get better and on Friday morning       (before 7 a.m) his dad had to bring him to DR Hospital ER   – however the doctors found that he is okay but suffering from a virus.     Sitara spent Thurday night (sleep over) at nana/nani home in Deep River – from there she was taken to her baby-sitter home (from there she catches a school bus to go to her school) on Friday morning by her nana/nani.

Tuesday 4 November 2014

Ba/Bapuji mailed (by Canada Post) a surprise package —   Christmas stickers and coloring book/Chocolate calender — for Maya ( and Kieran) addressed to Maya Shah , Toronto   .               Canada Post tracking (on its website) indicated that the delivery is expected by Tuesday 11 November 2014.

Saturday   8 November 2014

Sachin’s mom posted the following on her FaceBook entry:

” Hopfully a good Pantomime with good friends and dinner out will perk up my Sachin. He’s been cooped up since Tuesday. Looking forward to seeing Sleeping Beauty! “

————–

Note:

Also first snow —   of the season — falling in Deep River – started at noon.

Sunday   9 November 2014

Sitara lost her “molar” tooth to-day.   Here is postng by her mom on her FaceBook entry :

” Sitara’s molar just fell out. I kinda remember mine falling out too but I keep getting funny looks when we say her molar is loose. I am right to think that baby molars fall out and it is normal? “

Sunday 9 November 2014

When Ba was talking to Kieran’s dad on phone this evening – it was stated that Kieran has started crawling going   forward (to the front ) now. He started crawling backwards a few days ago.

Kieran on the move – title of the e-mail ( dated Monday 10 November 2014 )   received from Kieran’s mom   —–   it says:

” Kieran started creeping forwards on his stomach yesterday! Yesterday he could only go forward a few inches but today he is already going further and faster as he gets the hang of it. He is usually motivated to go after toys or Cheerios 😉 “

Saturday 15 November 2014

A surprise   – a baby bear (black)   was moving around outside the home in Mackey.   The cub loitered first on the deck at the back and then   over the swimming pool cover.     The kids (Sitara and Sachin)   just had a marvellous time looking at the baby bear.

Nina had posted a few photos on the Facebook on the same day ( 15 November)   – with a note :   ”   a baby Bear on our deck and pool! ‘.

Sunday 16 November, 2014

Santa came early inToronto   – with a grand parade in the downtown of the City.   Both Maya and Kieran went downtown with their parents to watcch the parade. This is Kieran’s first .

Their mom e-mailed 3 photos on the same date with a note:

We had a fun (but cold!) time watching the Santa Claus parade this afternoon. Ho Ho Ho!

Her mom sent a copy of that letter by e-mail of the same date ( 16 November 2014) :

And in preparation for the Santa Claus parade later today, Maya has written (or rather, dictated) her letter to Santa. She kindly included a request for her brother (although it’s not actually something he needs!) Maya also coloured a picture of one of Santa’s elves. Merry (early) Christmas, everyone!

Maya wrote ( dictated) :

Dear Santa,

For Christmas , I would like a silly baloon .

My brother Kieran would like some shoes.

Please and thank you.

Merry Christmas.

Saturday 15 November 2014

Today was Maya’s and Kieran’s Ba’s 75 the Birthday – which means it was Sitara’s and Sachin’s nani’s 75th birthday

Both Maya and Kieran along with their parents phoned from Toronto in the morning singing a   Happy Birthday song   and wishing Ba a very Happy Birthday .

In the afternoon , Sitara and Sachin with their parents phoned from Mackey i- singing a   Happy Birthday song   and wishing nani a very Happy Birthday .

In the evening at the Unity In Diversity dinner at the Lions Club Hall in Chalk River (adjoining Deep River)   – Sitara and Sachin sang (in the mike) in front of the public   (some 200 people) the Happy Birthday song to celebrate their nani’s 75th Birthday – and they ( parents ) had brought a cake -which was lit and then cut .

Wednesday 3 December 2014

This was a momentous day for Sachin at the school .   He participated with Grade 1 students on the Childs Auditorium stage   – to sing a couple of songs (in the afternoon at 2.30 pm) to the school audience and some parents (who were invited to attend).     Sachin’s parents could not attend as both of them were working and could not come out   – but his grandparents (nana/nani) attended the function. Nana took few photos and videos.

And there were few PowerPoint plates were also flashed to draw the attention of the students for being responsible in their daily lives.   There were some quotes from some students as to what they said about taking responsibilty . One of the quotes was from Sitara.   Here is what she had said:   (Note: nana took a photo – after nani had approached the front and talked to the kid who was in charge of the computer – with the PowerPoint plates.)

“ Don’t let other people do your chores   , do them yourselves.”

                                                                                                                                                        Sitara

Wednesday 3 December 2014

This was also a momentous day for Kieran .   Kieran was joyous mastering the art of clapping.

This is what his mom said on her e-mail of the same date ( along with a couple of photos – showing   ” clapping Kieran”.

Kieran has mastered the art of clapping today. He has been working on it for a while, but today he’s been doing it non-stop and is very proud of himself!

This is what/how his Bapuji (grandfather in Deep River) responded to the said e-mail and then further response from Kathy (Kieran’s grandmother in Toronto)   .

Bapuji:

”   He is just fantastic – happy ,smiling and clapping for excellent parents and
a wonderful sister to hang out with.”

Kathy

”   Isn’t he a darling! I feel happy when I look at him! I’m sure you
understand. K ”

Saturday 6 December 2014

This day is a momentous day for Sitara . She is participating in the Santa parade in Deep River – to unfold at 5.30 pm this afternoon. She did -walked (along the float) all the round circuit from the Deep River area   to downtown and back . She was part of a tableau float on the theme of   Walt Disney Animation Studios   “Frozen,” a stunning big-screen comedy adventure. Sitara was so poised and exhibited proud persona while marching along the float.

But surprise – Sachin did also participate – he sat on the float . The parents also joined in   -both Sunjay and Nina walking the circuit. Nana/nani   went to observe and watch and enjoy all the floats, noise, lights and general merry making – and took some photos and clips of videos.

Saturday 6 December 2014

Talking to Kieran’s (and Maya’s) dad and mom on the phone – it   fluttered Ba/Bapuji’s hearts that Kieran has started   some “babbling” and moves (crawls) happily around the house.   He also cut a total of 6 teeth ( 2   lower and 4 upper) . Maya is going out with parents and Kieran – and play with her dad and build toy robots – for a 3 year girl – she is already getting ready for future.

Friday 12 December 2014

This day nana/nani visited Sachin’s KG class at Mckenzee Community School in Deep River – to look at the   model town build by the Sachin’s KG class on the floor of the school room . The town was based on Deep River structures /buildings – lay out well done, Scahin explained what he built ( put together) for contribution to the model .   A beautiful practical educational teaching excercise .

———-

While visiting nana/nani came across a poster done by Sitara which was hung by the school on the corridor wall . The Theme of the poster was ” My Hero” . Sitara drew a poster – showing/painting   her and Sachin playing together in the field. This is what she wrote on the poster

I think Hero is someone

who is brave, has courage,

is caring in heart.

My Hero is my little brother,

Sachin because when I am

sad he makes me

feel better . When I   get

hurt he help me and

read books with me

On Monday 15 December 2014 – Kieran’s mom sent by e-mail the following:

Kieran is catching up to his big sister (well, not quite, but he’s trying!) At his 9-month visit today, he weighed 21.5 pounds (80%ile) and was 75 cm tall (90%ile).

On Friday 19 December 2014 – Ba/Bapuji received a 2014 Christmas Card and a write-up from Shannon – on behalf of herself, Sunir, Maya and Kieran. The write-up basically   provides a narrative for the progress of the family during 2014.

Here is the   narrative   (  part only )   that we got :

Best Wishes for a happy holiday season! 2014 has been an exciting year for our family, which grew 33% in March with addition of Kieran. having two children seems to be more tahn twice as busy as having one, but we have embraced the joy and chaos!.

Kieran is an easy going , happy baby with an infectious smile. He adores his big sisterand she can make him giggle louder than anyone ( even while doing things that border on sibling torture, such as squeezing his stomach while he lasaughs hysterically). I have learnt to step back and let them   ” play “. So far they have not suceeded in killing each other.

Maya is a spunky , chatterbox of a three year old.Fiercely independent, she often refrains                         ” I want to do it !” After a moment of doubt, when Kieran as first born ( “When is it time for him to go back inside your tummy, Mommy?” ), she has adjusted very well to her role as big sister. She loves singing building things , and doing somersualts.

Her daddy has been enjoying reliving his childhood by helping Maya build robots.

Friday 19 December 2014

Exciting News :

Sitara’s painting ” I am pretty”   . This is the poster she made at the school   for a     “Who am I? ” theme.

She also won (yesterday)   a prize for her poster

She also won yesterday – the Child Poverty in Action Poster Contest by the Pheonix Centre .   Got $50.00 as prize.

Maya’s first concert !     ——-

The following   e-mail from Maya’s mom dated 19 December 2014

Maya’s preschool class had their holiday concert today. They sang “jingle bells” and “twinkle, twinkle Hanukkah lights”. It was adorable and Maya took the singing very seriously.

Her next theatrical performance will be on Christmas Eve when she, Kieran and I will all be shepherds in the Christmas pageant!

Monday 22 December 2014

Sitara’s award for her winning the ” The Child Poverty in Action Poster Contest by the Pheonix Centre”   –   the following   e-mail from Sitara’s   mom dated 22 December 2014

Sitara won the Child in Poverty poster contest and $50. Here she is being presented with her prize by Mr. Ivan Saari, her School Principal.

Christmas 2014

Here is a poem crafted by Maya’s anD Kieren’s Grandma – Kathy   (in Toronto) about Christmas 2014.

Here whats he says about her grandkids – embedded in the poem

Maya, Kieran and Cole, angels all three.

Our grandkids are perfect ”“ what better judge than me?

————————-               Poem :

TWAS 2014

T”™was twenty-fourteen, a pretty good year,

Each morning I got up and said, “I”™m still here!”

Doug”™s goal for the year was to have a sleep test.

Now he has a machine and we both get some rest!

My goal was a wish as much as a plan.

I hoped to expand the Magladry-Knights clan.

How lucky are we that my wishes came true!

In March and October came Baby Boys Blue.

Maya, Kieran and Cole, angels all three.

Our grandkids are perfect ”“ what better judge than me?

Good times at the cottage ”“ if you find a bed.

With families expanding, who will be in the shed?

As each year I tell you, there”™s good news and bad,

Our family”™s been joyful, in mourning and sad.

No better example than my late dad Ray,

His death, his funeral”¦. then Cole born the next day!

Doug is still working (but Kathleen ain”™t)

But with each Friday off, he has no real complaint.

And now I exclaim as I close out this verse:

Life couldn”™t be better! May it never be worse!

Happy Christmas to all!

 Saturday 27 December 2014

Maya and Kieran arrived on Saturday   ( 27 December 2014) for Christmas celebration with the family/grandparents in Deep River and thus  be able to get together with their cousins in Mackey as well as all spending time at DR .     They were driven (in their Subaru car) by their parents who came via Huntsville – where they spent some time with their great grandmother ( Opal) .

Both Maya and Kieran were excited to have some quality time with Ba/Bapuji. This is Kieran’s first Christmas in DR . He in fact celebrated the first Christmas of his life with his new cousin Cole in Toronto before coimg over to DR. So that gave the grandparents in DR to spend Christmas holidays with 4 grandchildren together .

Sunday 28 December 2014

All had a great party at Mackey – many friends from the Indian community also were invited -who had the opportunity to meet Kieran first time     . Maya became very popular along with all other kids with the guests.

In addition to many partygames   – A Carrem game was also played   – where Sitara also played with great concentration .

Monday 29 December 2014

A gift opening was done at DR home -with all children enjoying the gifts from uncles/aunties and granbparents.

Thursday 1 January 2015

This is the day when Maya and Kieran left by car back to Totonto. Their parents were driving   – tis was a miserable day for driving due to heavy snowfall but the parents arrived in Toronto safely.

Grandparents – 2014- 3rd Quarter

Friday 4 July 2014

Maya and Kieran went to Ottawa -driven there by their parents – for a weekend in the Canadian Capital City. This would be the first visit by Kieran to the Capital City.

Thursday 10 July 2014

Today was the last day for summer soccer games (at Grouse Park, Deep River) for Sitara . Yesterday   was the last day for Sachin . These games are sponsored by Tim Horton of Deep Rover – with the Tee-shirts having their logo.   Both Sachin and Sitara – each one got a medal inscribed with Tim Horton name on it   and the the words of wisdom – ” The first goal is having fun ” . In fact Sachin had managed to kick the ball registering a goal for his team yesterday. It just happened – he was standing near the opponents’ goal post and the soccer ball by fluke was fielded near him – and he was encouraged to kick it by others (the team co-ordinator) and he just did that and voila – the ball landed in the goalpost.   This would be his first in his career ( he is just 4 years and 11 months old) .

Monday 15 July 2014

This is the day Sitara began her summer music class   at St. Mary’s School in Deep River – learning to play a recorder .   It was a hectic day as her parents were hosting a guest family visiting from Philadelphia   in USA.

This is what her mom posted on her Facebook on  Tuesday 15 July 2014

Sunjay’s Dad’s best friend’s family from England and America came all the way up to ours to stay with us. Means so much to us!!! Had a fabulous  night of feasting and chatting.

The visitors were Ashok , his wife Kasmira and her mom – 3 people .

Both kids had a ball of a time with the visitors – they were polite and very accommodating to the visitor’s needs.     Their nana/nani also joined in the afteroon and revelling in the feast mentioned above .

Sitara demonstrated her skill in playing a recorder – a one day skill   but she was full ofconfidence. She also played on the piano – earlier learnt from her mom. Sachin was not left behind- he played a harmonica with all the fun moves.

The visitors stayed one night and then left on Tuesday late morning back to Toronto before rerturning to Philadelphia   in USA.

Sunday 20 July 2014

Its a big day for Sachin – just turned 5 year old.     A birthday party was held at Mackey with some 15 or 16 of his friends – mostly from school and his parents’ friends’ children. It was a pool party – though it was cloudy with some rain in the early part of the day . This led to few games inside (in the house)   but luckly it cleared up somewhat allowing kids ( and some parents) to dip into the pool . All had a wonderful time     – birthday cake was cut   – decorated as a construction site – along with a toy shovel on the cake) and gifts were opened .   Parents bought for Sachin a kayak   – nana/nani were glad to contribute in this purchase.

Here is poem that nana wrote for Sachin’s 5th birthday :

Sachin   Mistry   – 5th Birthday   – 20 July 2014

Our smiling and playful boy

Our smiling and playful boy

turning to be 5 years old

taking   all in his fold

Our smiling and playful boy

scoring a soccer goal

a   role bestowed by destiny

Our smiling and playful boy

building his toys from Lego pieces

hiding in a fort built from quilts

Our smiling and playful boy

rushing to hug his nana

blushing   with love from his nani

Our smiling and playful boy

Year 2014 makes you adventurous

Exploring and inventing games

Our smiling and playful boy

Oh!   The loving brother Sachin

Sitara takes you   further

Sachin , Happy Birthday to you.

by     nana

For future write-up

1) Sitara is getting to be 7 year old on 5th August 2014 . However, her birthday party is organised on Saturday   ( 26 July) at Mackey –   as her Mama/Mami are visiting from Toronto arriving in Deep River on Friday   25 July.

During the birthday party on Saturday 26 July 2014 – nana/nani participated (along with Sitara’s friends and their parents) .

Here is poem that nana wrote for Sitara’s 7th birthday :

Sitara   – 7 year old   – 5th August 2014

Our Sitara is 7 year old

She is growing

So   bubbly and Cheerful

Always gracious and caring

Her helpful nature

Just wins hearts

A mind so scientific

Grasping details easily

An eye for   painting

Draws   figures   so telling

Sitara has to be around

Our hearts   beep joy

Wants   books read to her

She makes nana thrilled

Her smiles so captivating

Silent love enthuses all

Sachin so feels loved by her

We are very proud Sitara

A very Happy Birthday to you

We rejoice immensely.

nana

2) Also Maya is getting to be 3 years old – 7th August 2014   There is plan to organise a birthday party for her also at Deep River – date is being sorted out – depending on when Sunir’s friends (Nadia and family ) are available.

Maya will have another birthday party when they are back in Toronto – to be held   nearer to the birthday.

3) This will be Kieran’s first visit to his Ba/Bapuji’s place in Deep River   and also to hios Foi/Fuva place in Mackey.

Kirens has just turned 4 months old on 12 July 2014 .

On Wednesday, 23 July 2014 – his mom sent an e-mail with photo -which she titled “Our big boy ” This day   his 4 month check-up was done . Here is what his mom wrote in the e-mail:

Here is Kieran at his 4 month check-up today. He weighed in at 17 lb 2 oz (no wonder my arms are tired!) and 69 cm (27 inches) long (no wonder all his 6 month sleepers are too short!) He is at the 85th percentile for weight and over the 97th percentile for length!

4) Sitara participitated in   a recital of her musical learning at a summer school on Friday July 25.

There will be a presentation for parents on July 25 th at 11:45 in the library of St Mary”™s; this replaces the regular class time

5) Sunir/Shannon (with Maya and Kieran)   to arrive in Deep River from Toronto at about 9.00 pm after a brief visit to Shannon’s grandparents ( Maternal) in Huntsville .   Huntsville is en route (on Hwy 11) from Toronto to Deep River.   This will be   the first visit by Kieran to Deep River – he is only 4 months plus few days.

————

Sunir Family spent night at Mackey on Saturday nite – after Sitara’s birthday party .

All spent a day on Sunday together at Mackey – nana/nani were also participating . Again Sunir family spent the nite at Mackey as kids ( Maya and Kieran had gone sleeping there) .

On Sunday   afyernoon- all the kids & parents (except Kieran – who was left home in care of Ba/Bapuji) went to field ( across the Hwy 17 opposite to Jennings exit) to pick wild blueberries.   Rain interfered and that outing was cur short – however the group managed to pick a good amount of blueberries – which was hearaily consumed as part of ice-cream dessert.

Sitara has ball of a time with her Mama/mami – with Mama she got a robot toy assembled – a robot which can move around and make sound – use of two batteries ( AA).     With mami – she used the rock painting kit – for painting quite few rocks . She also had nana read that Rock kit book read to her .

Sachin was just in awe with Kieran – keep playing with him – along with his mama or anyone else who had Kieran with them.

Monday 28 July 2014

This day Maya’s 3rd birthday was celebrated in Deep River – it was to be at the beach but weather was cool -so it was decided to hold the party at Maya’s dad’s friend’s (Nadia’s) home . She had suggested that as they have a large backyard -well fenced and protected . Nadia has 5 kids and another two kids were their guests.   So that made a total of eleven (11) kids at the party -which made it very lively and enjoyable. Nadia;s kids were very excited and very hospitable . Sitara, Sachin and Maya had a great time while Kieran was being very cheerful and remained very attentive baby.

Here is a poem that Maya’s Bapuji wrote for Maya’s 3rd birthday :

Maya – 3 year old   – 7th August 2014

A sprite in her feet

Such a bright smile

Maya makes a splash

Our cottage going girl

She skips and jumps

Kieran on a swing

Brother feels the touch

Maya  is in heaven

Three year old Maya

Our sunshine ! Ever

She joins Grandma fishing

Kieran roots for best wishes

Our hearts flutter in joy

A song vibrates in the sky

Happy Birthday Maya

Many more to come

Bapuji

Tuesday 29 July 2014

This day Maya and Kieran spent time with Ba and Bapuji at their home in Deep River.   They went to Deep River marina in their Subaru Outback ( Silver) car in the late morning – also joined by Ba – as Maya insisted that Ba join them for the outing. Their cousins Sitara and Sachin came over in the evening – picked up by their Bapuji   ( Sitara/Sachin’s nana) from the baby-sitter’s home.   After that all went out in the backyard and the park behind that . The kids had a great time walking through different paths in the woods. Maya’s dad remembered the woods (and various paths) as he was going through them when he grew up in Deep River home .

Later before dinner, all were joined by first SItara/Sachin’s dad and then their mom . All decided to go again to the backyard and the park immediately behind it – and then they demonstrated how a geyser can be made/formed   by inserting few mentos candies into a 1 L bottle of a clear diet   pop ( sprite bottle was used) . All kids   – Sitara, Sachin and Maya –   were excited and participated with gusto.   Well Kieran had a good view as he was carried by his mom.

After the “mentos geyser” Maya’s dad ( Sitara/Sachin’s Mama) wanted to fly a hot-air balloon   (which he had bought from the Trading Post on Hwy 11 while driving to Deep River) . So an orangey balloon was brought from the home with a box of matches.   The igniter was lighted and the balloon lifted up by the air which got hotter with the flame now burning well.   It went over and rose to the sky and eventually disappeared in the horizon.

All had great   time .   After dinner – all there kids piled into the bathtub and had a good bath.

Sitara and Sachin went back to Mackey with their parents   and Maya and Kieran went to bed –   which allowed their parents go out by themselves and have an evening by themselves   – both Maya and Kieran being under loving watch (while they were sleeping) by their   Ba and Bapuji

After spending another splendid day   in Deep River – the vistors returned to   Toronto leaving Deep River at 9.00 am on Thursday 31 July 2014.

A pleasant few days for all the four kids   – Maya and Kieran and their cousins Sitara and Sachin   along with the parents   as well as   Deep River grandparents   .

Friday 01 August 2014

Sitara and Sachin spent the day at nana/nani home in Deep River.     Both parents were working and the babysitter was away.

The highlight of the day   . Sitara was playing in the living room and she organised some play chips ( red-triangle, orange -five sided , green – square and yellow- circle) in a pattern and the result was very pleasing. She asked me to take a photo (of the arrangement) on my camera for posterity.   So I said to her to get the camera from my Computer room   and once she brought the camera (it is digital – Sony Cyber-shot camera)   – I said that she can take the photo herself.

Well. she did and then she became an interpid photographer and took other photos of items in the living room – including of her nana too.   She them made /assembled objects ( including a world globe and her fairies etc) to take photos and she posed for one photo too.   Technology seems to be coming easy to her. After nana downloaded her photos on the computer – she could manipulate the computer file for her to view.

Tuesday 5 August   2014

Kieran tried out an exersaucer. His mom sent a photo (by e-mail) of his adventure.     Here is what she stated on the e-mail (dated 5 August 2014) :

Kieran enjoyed his first time in the exersaucer. He has also started rolling from back to front and did it 4 times today, most of them not witnessed by me (ie. I leave him on his back with a toy, go to another room to get something, and come back a couple minutes later to find him on his tummy!)

NOTE: Kieran started rolling from back to front – progressing in his journey to become a fine youngman.

Saturday 9 August 2014

This day Ba/Bapuji drove in their maroon Chrysler minivan – to go visit Kieran and Maya at their Toronto grandparents’ cottage on Severn River – near Severn, Ontario.   Of course their grandparents were there   -who had invited Ba/Bapuji to spend a night at the cottage . Kieran and Maya were with their parents at the Cottage.

Kids, Sunir and Shannon had driven there on Friday 8 August 2014 in their silver Subaru Outback car .

Ba/Bapuji were en route to Toronto to attend a wedding ( Renna/Alpesh wedding) and thus this afforded a possibilty to spend a night at the Cottage en route.

It was fun time -both kids were enjoying their cottage time – Maya is an outdoor girl .       The guests were also invited to play a board game ( crokinole) with Sunir and Doug -as well as with Maya –   a   3 year old girl can shoot play pieces into the hole – this manouver is called achieving a ” ringer ”

NOTE:           Crokinole Board game

This game is like shuffleboard in the round. Players take turns flicking disks on a board, trying to score points by attaining central regions

On Sunday 10 August 2014,   “Captain” Douglas ( Kids’ Grandpa) took the visitors on a boat ride on the Severn River . A beauitiful start of the day   – the sun was rising from the east . The boat ride was very soothing.   Happen to see   an actual “Boat Train ” bringing 3 boats across.

Big Chute Marine Railway is a boat lift   at lock 44 of the   Trent -Severn Waterway in Ontario   It works on an inclined plane to carry boats in individual cradles over a change of height of about 60 feet (18 m). It is the only   marine railway (or canal inclined plane)   of its kind in North America still in use, and is overseen by federally operated Parks Canada.

Maya was a good “tourist” guide explaining features along the Severn RIver to her Ba.

On Sunday afternoon – Maya’s ( kids’s) two aunties (Heather and Erica) drove over from Toronto – to spend time at the Cottage with their mom, Shannon   (sister), Sunir and the kids. Grandpa then left for Toronto as he had tp prepare for his job next day. Erica is a visitor from Switzerland -on a vacation – to be going back in a couple of days . She works there . Heather is expecting and thus kids ( mainly Maya ) will have a new baby to play with in October.   Heather lives close by to Shannon/Sunir in Toronto .

Highlight :- Kieran did rolling from back to front – three times – in full view of Bapuji, his mom and others.

Ba/Bapuji left after a nice scrumptious ” Cottage” style dinner   – with all trappings including a nice fruit pie -baked by Kathy.   Sunir also came with Ba/Bapuji- in fact he drove the Chrysler minivan to Toronto. Ba/Bapuji spent a couple of nights in Toronto – though missing the kids and Shannon who stayed behind at the cottage to be with mom and siisters . The Toronto house was empty and silent without the kids being there.

——————–

Note:   Thursday 14 August 2014   –   a dangerous lightening   situation

The following Facebook posting was noted on Kathy’s   page:

“A big lightning bolt hit the cottage on Tuesday evening and fried the microwave and the TV. I was standing between those objects at the time but I seem to be still functioning, sort of.”

——————-

On the same Saturday , both Sitara and Sachin went to Toronto with their parents – being driven in their VW Passat – to attend the Reena/Alpesh wedding in Oakville . They stayed at Admiral Inn in Mississauga for three nights . Reena is Sunjay’s cousin –   I think she is a cousin twice removed but they have a good family relation.     Maya/Kieran’s Ba/Bapuji were also invited . Thus both Sitara/Sachin had nana/nani at the wedding on Monday 11 August 2014 – at the Oakville Conference Centre.   Both Sitara and Sachin participated in other wedding activities on Sunday at Reena’s parents’ home and also enjoyed the wedding and the Reception after that on Monday .

They drove back to Mackey (with their parents ) on Tuesday 12 August and nana/nani returned to Deep River on Wednesday .

Saturday 16 August 2014

This is the big day for Kieran .   His sister   Maya helped to feed him his first solid food . His mom sent a photo (dated 16 August 2014) which   commemorates   this event. The e -mail stated the following:

Maya helped feed Kieran his first meal (rice cereal) this afternoon. He seemed to like it, although most of it ended up ON him instead of IN him!

Saturday 16 August 2014

This is also a big day for Sitara.   It was her first sleep-over   (away from home and nana/nani home) at   her friend’s   (Sierra) home in Deep   River.

She is growing fast and soon will be spending more time with her friends.

Monday 18 August 2014
Kieran’s   mom sent a photo by e-mail on   Monday 18 August 2014 with the following narrative.
Kieran enjoyed his first time in the Jolly Jumper today. He was quite jolly, although it took him a while to get the hang of the jumping part!
Tuesday     19 August 2014
Sitara lost another of her teeth ( at nana/nani home – just about the dinner time) – she took it in her stride. This was her 8th tooth lost so far.   She deserved a big reward from her ” tooth fairy ”   –   (in this case nana played the part).
Both kids (Sitara and Sachin) enjoy playing and be with their nana/nani .
Sachin always comes with   “a gusto” to hug his nana and showing joy by uttering/chanting   in lilting tone – words “nana …… nana” in a playful mode.
This Tuesday he had nana to help build a tent ( with a blanket)   and have his nana play with him – by being a   “bad wolf” and shouting and “huffing and puffing ” to blow his tent away . What a great way to spend playful time with the grandson.
Thursday 28 August 2014
This was a celebratory day   – Sitara and Sachin were enjoying the celebration of their parents’ 10th wedding anniversary   – a private party organised by their nani/nana at their home in Deep River . This is the home where Nina got married to Sunjay 10 years ago – many memories   . Ofcourse the actual wedding ceremony was held at Hoogli’s Farm in Pembroke .
Friday 29 August 2014
This   day is also   a celebratory one for Sitara/Sachin’s parents – as they achieved a very critical   milestone – to have their abode free of any encumbrances.
Saturday 30 August 2014
Sitara and Sachin were driven (left Mackey early in the morning) to Morrisburg for spending a day at the Upper Canada Village.   They returned back home late in the evening of the same day.
At the Upper Canada Village   ,   their   costumed interpreters tells the visitors what life was like in the 19th century.
Friday 29 August 2014
Maya and Kieran have gone to their Grandpa/Grandma cottage on Severn River – to spend the long weekend there.   Maya and Kieran have gone out on the Severn River with their parents in   a boat   and Maya spends time having fishing fun by herself from the deck – of course watched by adults   for her safety.

The weekend   after the visit to the cottage   on the Severn River –   an e-mail message from Shannon   on 1 Sept 2014:-

Here is Maya in Kingston, en route back from the wedding in Westport. We had a lovely weekend in Westport and enjoyed catching up with university friends (mine at the wedding and Sunir’s at a nearby cottage). We completed the trip down memory lane by stopping in Kingston to check out the campus and town (amazing what has changed… and what hasn’t!) The only bad part of the trip has been all the car travel (Maya carsick x 2 and peed pants x 1, Kieran spit-up x infinity, etc) Poor Kieran also just got a wasp sting on the back of his head… somehow a wasp got between the back of his head and the stroller 🙁

We hope everyone else has enjoyed the Labour Day long weekend and is ready for September!

Sitara started her Grade 2 class and Sachin his Senior KG at Mackenzie   Community Center in Deep River.

This coming Friday ( 5 September 2014) , they are going to Florida to the Walt Disney Land park with their parents   . They will skip the school for that time.   Initailly , their parents will drive them (by blue VW car – not Passat but the other saloon one ) across the border in USA and tomorrow (on Saturday, 6 September 2014 )   they will fly to   Walt Disney land in Orlando, Florida.

Already both nana/nani are missing the kids .

Saturday 20 September , 2014

Sitara and Sachin   arrived back from their trip to Disneyland (Florida) – just after mid-night driven by their parents from across the border   (USA) .   Nina/Sunjay   stopped by DR house on their way to Mackey – just to say hullo and pick-up a few things.

On Sunday 22 September, 2014 – this is what Nina posted on her Facebook :

” 6 FULL days at DisneyWorld, 1 day at Discovery Cove, 1 day at Seaworld, 2 days at Aquatica, numerous trips to Downtown Disney, 1 missed flight, 14 Days of fun with the family….PRICELESS! “

Well Sunday grocery shopping by nana/nani   had a   bit springyness in their steps – as they were picking up items which the kids may like when they come to nana/nani home   for supper either on Monday or Tuesday.

Monday 29 September 2014   & Tuesday 30 September 2014

Both Sitara and Sachin had a sleep over at nana/nani place – since their dad was going   to Pembroke for office meetings (of managers) held there – for which he had to go early and be there by 8.00 am. This way it is easier on the kids to get ready in the mornings for the school.
