A tribute to Baa , my mother

Namaste Pranam Baa – I bow to your graciousness

Your sacrifice and forever a smile on your face

——-

We respect your spirit of service

also the spirit of responsibility that goes with it

——-

We understand your circumstances and extended family bond

but  never felt left out when growing up in your bosom

——-

We   soaked up your love and care all these years

Your magnanimity and self-control are etched in our hearts

———

We had a shelter to come to whenever we hit a storm

Your words of wisdom always carried us through difficult times.

We have you in our collective memory which is deep

May you rest in peace      – Namaste Pranam Baa

 Further notes:

1)

This Mother”™s Day was a special  day -as it came just a few days after my mother  (Kasturben) passed away in Kenya (on Saturday morning – 6.10 am Nairobi time – 24th April 2010)  .

The kids – Sitara and Sachin along with their parents Nina/Sunjay as well as  Sunir/Shannon had gathered in Toronto when we were there – so we all can have a Memorial Service (Puja) for her .

This was organised at Ram Mandir on Export Blvd. (off Derry Road), Mississuaga on Mothers Day   (9 May 2010) at 4.00 p.m. Pandit Vijay conducted the Puja.   We all were there but also joined by Kathy & Doug (Shannon”™s parents),  Jayaben ( Sunjay”™s auntie) and by Bindu &  Raju   (my father”™s cousin brother Bharmal”™s daughter  (Bindu)  and her husband, Raju ) .

Pandit Vijay was enthralled to conduct the Puja at Shree Jalaram”™s feet and we were all gratified by Shree Jalaram”™s compassionate eyes.   Sitara participated in the Puja well and seriously and when I emotionally broke down- she was there to comfort me and put her hands on my shoulder and  face and assured  me that all is okay and  not to cry. She is a god-sent child who could restore one”™s faith in destiny.

2)    After coming back from Toronto, this Friday (14 May) we had a Prayer meeting for our Baa  at our home in Deep River . Some 30 people participated.

Bhajans were sung and prayers offered.    One of our friends (Ken) talked about our knowing each other since last many years  and offered his & his family’s condolences as well as talked about “loss of a mother” in general and how she can be missed – as she gave so much to her sons and daughters over the life time. Ken lives in Deep River.

Peter  also offered his & his family’s  condolences and said the following  (Peter lives in Petawawa/Pembroke) :

Hi, Pravin, Jackie, Nina , Sunjay, Sunir, Shannon and the family

The fundamental pattern for any community is a congregation getting together at a grieving friend’s place to pray and remember fondly a loved one.

Today we all privileged to do so. It is beautiful gesture as all wonderful, caring friends of Pravin and Jackie are united as one in prayer, here and far away.

The closest bond we will ever know are bonds of grief . But even at such a time, the sons and daughters and their families are grateful to have known and associated with Pravin’s mother. Gratitude is a higher tribute than grief as I know they are all proud and grateful for their beloved mother  and grandmother.

I would like to share a little poem with the group. It is dedicated to mothers, grandmothers – past, present and future – and of course to our spouses and daughters.

 ———-

There’s a magic in a mother’s touch

And sunshine in her smile

———-

There’s love in everything she does

To make our lives worthwhile

———-

We can find hope, courage and love

Just by looking in her eyes

———

Her laughter is a source of joy

Her words are warm and wise

———

There is kindness and compassion

To be found in her embrace

———

And we see the light of peace

Shinning from a mother’s face.

Prior to conducting the “arti ” in praise of our Guardian Angels , Sunjay , our son-in-law, reminisced and gave a brief but moving narrative  of his visit to Nairobi, Kenya with Nina (our daughter) after their wedding (in 2004) to seek blessings from Baa.  He remembered the joy and a happiness on her face.   He also mentioned  the subsequent visit made by his mom (from England) to Kenya to spend some time with Baa and family . This visit was organised together with us  (Nina’s   parents) when we went to Kenya from Canada.

The Puja was completed with the “arti” and subsequently all had refreshments  together.

Postscript:

Both kids (Sitara and Sachin) also came with their parents – though Sitara had gone to her BabySitter during the day. However, Sachin could only participate in the Prayer at the   beginning as it was his bedtime – Puja started at 8.15 p.m with the singing of Lord Genesha’s ” Stuti”  by Sarah ( one of Art Of Living members) . Sitara remained at the Puja though it was her past bedtime too. She remined for about half time and then went away to the Recreation Room and watched TV . She did come back during the “Arti” time.

Sitara remained all excited seeing so many people at home and singing “bhajans” etc at the Puja. She paid attention to her nani singing and when her nana read his poem for Baa. It was difficult for to decide when to get ready for bed – it was past mid-night and we had to cajoled her to change into her PJs and do teeth brushing. After that , the kids went with their parents to Mackey as Sitara did not want to sleep over.   She did kid around with her mom that she likes her room here at her grandparents home as it is well appointed with “Princess motif”  bed sheets and other items.   Then she would give a mischievous look to her mom.

 Friday 23 April 2010

As Nina/Sunjay had postponed their travel to UK until June – they had decided to take their tour of USA now rather than as earlier planned to go there after coming from UK.

They left  by car for Pennsylvania, USA  on Friday 23 April 2010 and crossed the border at Kingston . Both kids  have a long car ride and all arrived at their destination at about 11.00 p.m . They were guests at Sanjay/Sapna home . They also have a 3-month old baby .   We are told that Sitara is really very excited about the  baby – though the first night she went to bed without meeting the baby -as it was already late.

This Friday became a historical date for the family – my mother (who was close to being 89 years old) in Kenya – went sick with pain in the back and all over the body. She was admitted to the local MP Shah Hospital and was placed in the ICU for treatment. This was all so sudden – she was okay-her normal self –  till Friday morning. Then worst news came around mid-night. Nina received a call on her cell phone from Kenya (her SarlaAuntie) that mom had passed away. Mom   passed away at 6.10 am (Kenya Time) of Saturday 24 April 2010 and her body was cremated  on Sunday 25 April 2010 at 3.00 pm at the Hindu Cemetary in Nairobi.   Born In Kenya, Africa and died in Kenya, Africa.

Poor Nina ! She had to handle this sad news. She phoned home (Deep River) and let her parents know of the sad news. She then informed  her brother Sunir in Toronto .

Both Nina & Sunjay suggested they come home as they were concerned about my (her dad) emotional state . Sunir also phoned from Toronto and suggested that he come to Deep River next day on Saturday -as he was also concerned about me (his dad) . But all  that was not necessary and we all decided that when we meet in Toronto during May – we can have a memorial prayer (puja) for my mom on Sunday 9th May 2010  – the Canadian Mother’s Day at the Ram Mandir (on Export Blvd  off Derry Road)  at 4.00 pm.

Baa had seen Sitara’s photos and video clips – specially when we were in Kenya   last year. She was happy to see Sitara’s video clips – all playing and smiling and just being a happy child. However, I do not think she has seen Sachin’s photo – though she was excited and gave her blessings when he was born.   Sachin is the youngest – newest of her great grandchildren – and now the last one that she has known about.

We (nana/nani) miss the kids while they are travelling but that is life. We will miss our Baa too that she is on a very long journey to eternity.

Thursday 29 April 2010

This day the grandchildren were conspicuous by their absence. Of course they are with their parents travelling in the US – and visiting their relations ( Sunjay’s side). At once, while having lunch time at their home in Deep River, their nana missed them – it’s almost one week since they are gone on their escapade to US.

Well that’s life !

Thursday 6 May,2010

The kids were back in Canada after visit to the States and  visited Nina’s friend Moreen (& family) in Southern Ontario and after that spent a night at Sunjay’s uncle -Shantilal’s home in Mississuaga.   On Friday (7 May 2010) they all came to Sunir/Shannon (Nina’s brother & his wife)  home (in Toronto) to  spend time with them. They stayed there till Monday morning ( 10 May 2010)  . This gave both borther/sister families to enjoy each other’s company and the kids to be coddled by their favourite uncle and auntie.

However, the weather was aweful – all stormy and cold. This let the kids remain indoor, which allowed the kids to play and bond deeply with their Sunir uncle and Shannon Auntie.

In the meantime, grandparents had also come to Toronto on Thursday (6 May 2010) to attend a Gala for Professional Engineers and an Annual General Meeting. Thye had stayed at a downtown hotel till Sunday morning and then had gone to Sunir/Shannon’s home .

Sunday was a Mothers Day as celebrated in Canada – all were invited at Shannon’s parents home for lunch – where  all celebrated the Mothers Day . Shannon’s grandparents   (Ken & Rae ) were also present at the celebration and her aunt Pat from Ottawa. Shannon’s one sister Heather & her boyfriend (Brian) were there. Her sister Erica could not attend as she is in France at this time.  Nina/Sunjay  were there with Sitara and Sachin (our grandchildren), we were there and of course   Shannon & Sunir also celbrated the Mother’s Day with a great sumptuous vegetarian meal –  prepared & presented by hosts Kathy and  Doug (Shannon’s parents).     Chico, the dog, was a star attraction and Sitara enjoyed playing with him.

While Sitara was coddled and played with – she was mostly making her own games and playfulness – but Sachin , the baby was held and coddled by most . Shannon’s aunt Pat was so enthralled and played -cooed and coddled – with him for a good amount of time.

This Mother’s Day was a special  day -as it came just a few days after my mother  (Kasturben) passed away in Kenya (on Saturday morning – 6.10 am Nairobi time – 24th April 2010)  .The kids (Nina/Sunjay & Sunir/Shannon) had gathered in Toronto when we were there – so we all can have a Memorial Service (Puja) for her . This was organised at Ram Mandir on Export Blvd. (off Derry Road), Mississuaga on Mothers Day   (9 May 2010) at 4.00 p.m. Pandit Vijay conducted the Puja.   We all were there but also joined by Kathy & Doug (Shannon’s parents),  Jayaben ( Sunjay’s auntie) and by Bindu &  Raju   (my father’s cousin brother Bharmal’s daughter  (Bindu)  and her husband, Raju ) .

Pandit Vijay was enthralled to conduct the Puja at Shree Jalaram’s feet and we were all gratified by Shree Jalaram’s compassionate eyes.   Sitara participated in the Puja well and seriously and when I emotionally broke down- she was there to comfort me and put her hands on my shoulder and  face and assured  me that all is okay and  not to cry. She is a god-sent child who could restore one’s faith in destiny.

After the Momorial service for our loving Baa (my mother) – Nina/Sunjay wanted a prayer (Puja) offerred to Goddess Laxmi to thank  her for Sachin’s arrival in our family and praying for his good growth and progress.   We all gathered around Goddess Laxmi -and Pandit Vijay conducted the traditional ritual prayer (Puja) of Goddess Laxmi. Sachin was there – in his mother’s hands and Sitara participated in the offerings.

On Sunday, we all spent the night at Sunir/Shannon’s home – all under one roof – our complete family in Canada.

There was a bit of improvement in weather  on Sunday evening – thus Sitara got an opportunity to go outdoors with her granddad (nana) to the park – opposite (just across the road) to Sunir/Shannon home.   Subsequently, her ShannonMami also came and joined her at the park and played in the huge sandbox for a long time.     Sitara/ShannonAuntie    played with a toy crane filling it with sand and then discharging it into a pail or other container. This was a new toy for Sitara.

On Monday (10 May 2010) morning before leaving for Mackey , Sitara again went to the park with her nana and had great time there for about an hour and a half. The weather was very conducive for outdoors.

Sachin all along was his usual self – trying to talk and making all kinds of responses for conversation. He also have started crawling but he is still not easy in crawling. He crawls up to a stretch of a couple of feet and then lies down on his tommy and starts “swimming” like feet movement – to try to move.   He is easy in sitting and also knows how to fall . He stands (holding the edge  of a sofa or similar furniture) but not quite comfortable . He always has smile and laughter –   no cring at all and  a bit playful and mischievious .     He ubderstands “ta ta” – bye bye and waves his hands in reponse instantly  & mutters “ta ta” easily and happily.   He also speaks ” da   da  ” and “ba ba” and continuously tries to expand his vocabulary . This is very exciting as he is only 9 months old. This little fellow does not take a soother   and maintains his composure and cool.

Grandparents came back from Toronto on Tuesday – while Sitara/Sachin had come home to Mackey on Monday with their parents.

On Wednesday, they came home to Deep River  .   Sachin and his parents came in the morning before going to Pembroke   – so Sachin can get his feed and parents also had breakfast here as they had to come early to Deep River to take Sitara to her BabySitter.

Sitara was at her BabySitter’s during the day   (while her parents had gone (along with Sachin) to Pembroke for shopping -paint cans).  Sitara was picked up from the BabySitter  by her nana/nani – and then she had dinner with her nana  -served by her nani, Sitara likes these days cheese sandwhich  and chocolate milk. She also ate green peas.  After Sachin had came home from Pembroke -he had his meal too.

Sitara played Hide & Seek with all (after her dinner) but then went outdoors with her nani and helped her to string the laundry clothes on the outdoor lines for drying.

Sachin played on the living room carpet – crawling or shuffling forward to get his toys etc.     Then all went to Mackey and house was quiet again.

 Thursday   13 May 2010

I got the following from Sitara’s mom

” Sitara asked us to make NEMO for dinner tonight. So we did (we made indian Salmon and told her it was Nemo). She talked to NEMO all through supper telling him she was eating him and that we would see him again as poo poo! Then she told us she would eat TWO desserts so that Nemo could have one in her belly. How thoughtful.”

My Mother – Kasturben – 1921-2010

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                              24 April 2010

Kasturben – My Mother  – 1921-2010

My mother passed away at 6.10 am (local time ) in Nairobi, Kenya on Saturday 24 April 2010   . She was 89 years old.  Her body was taken out for final journey from her residence on Wambugu Road, Parklands, Nairobi   at 2.30 pm on Sunday 25 April 2010 for cremation at the   Hindu Cemetery in   Nairobi.

My mother’s name is Kasturben . She married my father , Juthalal Dharamshi Naya Shah when she was young – not quite 16.     Her father was Sunderji Lalji Haria – a Thika resident .   Her father was the   first in our Visa Oshwal Shah community who got married to my grandmother (Jiviben) in Kenya -with proper Jain/Hindu ceremony. Both my maternal grandfather & grandmother had migrated from Jamnagar, Gujarat area of India in the early part of the last Century..

My father had a duka (a shop of general merchandise) in Ruiru in Kenya – a town near Thika and also near to Nairobi ,   the present day capital city of Kenya.   My father ran the business with his dad , Dharamshi Naya Shah . My paternal grandfather had also migrated to Kenya from Jamnagar, Gujarat area of India in the early part of the last Century – later followed by his wife (Deviben) and son, Juthalal (my father)

Here in Ruiru, my mother gave birth to my elder brothers, Kanti & Arwind . After that a new born did not make it . However, pretty soon I was born in 1940 . When I was about 4 years old, my father decided to move to Mombasa -as there was better opportunity for education of his kids.   Soon the household became established with more siblings – Sarla , a sister; Suryakant ,a brother; Ranjan , a sister and the youngest of all Daksha , a sister.

My mother also helped her mother-in-law raise my uncle – Rasik  & my auntie Savita who were many years younger than my father. My father had other sisters also  Amritben, Jashodaben &   Shantaben .   It was   a joint family structure and along with my paternal grandfather his all progeny stayed under one roof. My father’s sisters Amritben & Jashodaben   were married before my father moved to Mombasa & Shantaben   was married after settling in Mombasa. Both Rasik Uncle & Savita Auntie were closer to   our own age and thus we grew up playing with them – though my uncle was a bit senior. In the early years after my father moved to Mombasa, my grandfather had stayed behind in Ruiru and only later after about 5 years he moved to Mombasa   to join his son. During these early years, my maternal uncle Gunvant (my mother’s 2nd brother) had come to Mombasa to stay with her sister so that he can further his education.

Over the years when in Mombasa,   a coastal town. she entertained and looked after legion of relatives and travellers from Kenya hinterland and also those coming from or going to India (as immigrants or returning back after visiting India) . This added a lot of responsibilities and burden while looking after and raising her children and her in-laws’ children. All through this arduous work, she maintained her   charm and smiles on her face – and won plaudits from many. Of course there are always some who took advantage of her hospitality and sometime gave free (unwanted and unsolicited) advice without trying to help in   the chores. These were the free loaders but she never ever grumbled – in the Indian tradition of   Atithi Devo Bhavo (Guests are always God’s representation) .

At the time when I graduated from my high school in Mombasa during 1956, my father suffered heavy losses in his businesses (import business and a soda factory) and even survival became difficult. Both my elder brothers (Kanti & Arwind) began clerical work with the KaluWorks   (aluminium utensil factory); which helped the family to subsist. I got a bursary from the Kenya Government and started my graduate study (in 1957) in Civil Engineering at the Royal College, Nairobi   – staying first three years with my GunvantMama & AmuMama who lived on Duke Street, Nairobi.   After my graduation in 1962, I began work with the Kenya Government and subsequently in 1964/1965 family moved from Mombasa to Nairobi.

It’s interesting even with all this daily chores to occupy her, she somehow maintained her knowledge  of many practical things and new developments . When young, we never realised her vast reservoir of knowledge which came to fore   when we were grown up and had more time to spend with her – that is after my father had passed away.   When my father was alive, she was always besides him and joined him in whatever he wanted to undertake. I guess she also was reading magazines and books along with him and maintaining the knowledge of the world around.

My father was an ardent cigarette smoker which affected his lungs. He passed away in 1985 from lung infection during winter.

Later in life , my mother enjoyed watching TV and somehow did understand news both in English and Kiswahili. She   enjoyed very much the British   soap opera , Bold and Beautiful,  and would make a point of not missing it over many years – except when her eyesight became weak and when she became more fragile that she stopped watching it and TV altogether ..

My mother’s  heart was situated on the right side of the body. Biologically , usually all of us have our hearts on the left side of the body. She had over the years learnt and collected much   medicinal knowledge – mostly Aryuvedic medicines but also she had great understanding of modern medicine and thus was always in command when looking after her children when young but also she looked after own treatment very intelligently till her passing away.   She was always very meticulous in whatever she did and she had this thing about cleanliness and also always dressing proper and best possible way to present herself to the world.

She has over the years developed time & effort management routine so even till her passing away, she had organised her life so all activities from breakfast to sleep are done in proper timing. She was considerate   not to impose herself unnecessarily on her children but remain with the flow of happenings day to day.

In her days when she could not walk due to corn on her sole and swelling of in her feet , she was on a wheel chair till her passing away. My brother Kanti & his wife, Kanchan   became   her guardians as, over the years,   one by one all her children and grandchildren left Kenya to settle in UK and myself in Canada.   My sister Sarla also had remained in Nairobi and kept her company especially around evening meals. My maternal Uncle AmuMama was her constant companion – her brother and she were just a combination which gives all wonderful delight. Between two of them there was so much love – that it is difficult to describe.  A music to ears , an absorbing sight and a solace to the soul when they are together.

Over the years my mother had daughter-in laws KanchanBhabhi (married to my brother Kanti), Kumudbhabhi (married to my brother Arwind ), Jashoda(Jackie) -my wife and Jaswanti (married to my brother Suryakant) – all shared the joint family structure and living at our house on Wambugu Road , Parklands,Nairobi – until I left for Canada in 1974 and then my brother Arwind  lost his life – killed by   robbers at his store on River Road in Nairobi in 1999 and after that  Kemudbhahi left to go to UK and live with her son Nimesh (Tiku) . Subsequently her youngest son Suryakant & Jasu also left to establish their residence in UK near their son, Sunai. So my mother was with KanchanBhabhi until her passing away.     In all these years , my mother had always looked to her daughter-in-laws as her daughters and they in turn have looked to her as their mother. There was some natural bonding and   mutual respect .

The greatest pain that my mother suffered all her living life (after 1999) was the untimely loss of my brother, Arwind from a bullet of a robber.   The worst is that the police in Kenya did not capture anyone who perpetrated this crime.   There was   a big demonstration march in the street   (by locals – who were disgusted with this   type of crime and who were respectful of my brother for his empathetic heart). However this episode gnawed at my mother’s heart till her passing away.

My mother was very respectful of all her  son-in laws – first was Satish (Sarla’s husband) , then Mahendra (Ranjan’s Husband) and last Dipek (Daxa’s Husband). Both Mahendra & Dipak were UK resident   but Satish was in Nairobi . All son-in-laws remained   in constant and respectful and loving contact with her. Satish, being in Nairobi had many interactions.

All her grandchildren loved her. They are scattered all over –   from Kenya to UK and North America. Now one (Api) is in Uganda.   Over the years they kept coming (separately) to Kenya – just to spend some time with her. These are  Shammir , Nimesh (Tiku), Rina  Minesh Shah,  Nehul, Jigna, Binita, Rehma, Sunai, Purvi, Ajul, Dinit , Krupesh – all of UK ,  Bansri , Seema of Nairobi,  Neera of Mombasa , Api/Amit of Kampala,Uganda . Nina Sunjay Mistry of Mackey, Ontario,  Sunir  Shah of Toronto, Ontario, Sunit Satish Shah of Toronto, Ontario.     When they cannot visit – they remained in communication with her on phone many times .

This journey does not end here. My mother was fortunate to add to her family grandchildren-in- law who married to her grandchildren.   Shammir  married to Rina, Bansri married to Ketan, our Rina married to Minesh,  Nimesh married to Prasita , Sunit married to Shaileen (Shilu) , Neera married to Tejul , Seema married to Kirit,   Api married to Amit , Nina married to Sunjay,   Sunai married to Priyal,  Nehul married   to Sharmee,  Sunir married to Shannon and  Jigna married to Richard.

My mother was always in heaven when talking about her   grandchildren-in-law. Almost all of them had taken to her and were always looking forward to visit her . All of them live overseas and thus visiting her often is not feasible but they did visit as possible.

Both Nina & Sunir -though born in Canada just loved her. First they met her in  UK when my sister, Daksha got married and we were all there . Later after that (in 1986) she   visited us here in Hamilton, Ontario and Sunir , a young kid   then just took to her . He,  teaching her English and she,  teaching him Gujarati   language.   Nina, a bit older and   knowing   Hamilton and bus routes etc – took upon herself to take her grandma for a tour of Hamilton – few times and lead her on the buses and then take her to various place of interest.   A bond was established which lasted forever.   All of   her other grandchildren grew in Kenya and were close to her and a natural bond was already there between them & her.
Nina after her marriage   to Sunjay Mistry in August 2005 , wanted to get blessings from her own Grandma and this led her and Sunjay to visit her in Nairobi in 2006. They came home all wooly eyed about meeting her. Sunir also visited his grandma   again at the age of 16 – he was all excited about that – though a bit chagrined about living in Kenya as one cannot go out alone on foot   for fear of getting   robbed . Sunir again went to Kenya -accompanying me when his Grandma had taken a bad turn to her health in 2007. Fortunately, his Grandma got treated by two newer doctors in Nairobi   South C Hospital – and she recovered quite quickly form the modern treatment.   This time Sunir also talked to his grandma about his love for Shannon and   showed his grandma   Shannon’s photo   . He got excellent vibes from his Grandma and a tacit approval. I think Sunir was ecstatic   as   he got no reprimand from his favourite family matriarch but instead got happiness shown.
This past year after Jigna (my sister Ranjan’s daughter) got married to Richard in London, UK ;   they made a point to visit my mother (Jigna’s grandma) in Nairobi and received her blessings. My mother was so happy and they spent many hours of excellent time together.
My mother was truly blessed with many great grandchildren-   both paternal & maternal . Her great grandchildren are :  in Kenya – Nikit, Akshay, Diva &  Mahi;     in UK – Ruan, Syan, Ruhi, Kria, Ashay, Savir and  in Canada – Sitara &  Sachin Mistry of Mackey, Ontario. Nikit and Akshay – Bansri/Ketan’s children in Nairobi are older and always remained in contact with their great grandma. Nikit is now studying in UK   but at her last days on this earth, Nikit   was there   and remained in touch with her.
My mother, Kasturben , lost her battle with life due to age .   She was an amazing person, a true Jain  lady, a great family person and a wonderful mother.  Everyone who knows her have touched on a “life well lived.”  Even though I am away from her since last 35 years or so   here in Canada , she was so present in my life that I know I will not be able to fill the void for a very long time, if ever. Many say that she was lucky to witness such flowering of loving family and she was loved deeply but the truth is that we (her children & grandchildren & great grandchildren and many others of her family and friends) are lucky to have been loved by her and being there for us at all times of trial and tribulations and   witnessing our happiness and growth.

Saturday 27 March 2010

Today, both Sitara & Sachin went for swimming (in the afternoon) at Petawawa pool (DunDonald Hall) with their parents . Their grandparents (nana & nani) also joined in the fun.   They also spent part of the morning at shoppping and attending a friend’s party.   After swimming , they all (kid and their parents) went to Pembroke for shopping etc. – their nana & nani returning home to Deep River.

This day Sitara got some virus and first threw up and the lost her voice. She seems to have a head cold. This sort of bug is going around the area.

She is recovering but remained at home . Well, it seems now her mom has also got a head cold but all are coping well.

Note; Her nana is now getting a bit bold in the swimming pool and have learnt to swim on his chest – by himself. He is okay for swimming on his back.   Today , he did two breadths by swimming on his chest – which is a vast improvement from a month ago when he would just sink if he tries to swim on his chest.

Thursday   1 April 2010

By this time,   Sitara had recovered from her head cold and thus gone to her BabySitter’s place for the day. So when her nana/nani travelled to Toronto (to-day) by car to spend the Easter weekend with her mama (Sunir) & mami (Shannon) – she was not home at Mackey when her grandparents stopped by en route to Toronto.   However, Sachin was there  – and as usual he was playful and had great time with his grandparents.   He gave his normal mischievious smiles to  his nana and also to  his nani  – and after about 2 hours of playing with Sachin, both nana & nani went on their way to Toronto. Sachin’s mom was left to feed Sachin his lunch by herself   – well this is the normal happening most days.

Note: Both the grandparents had a great time in Toronto with Sunir/Shannon for the Easter Weekend – went to park on Friday for a picnic – playing freezbee , flying kites and having fun with Chicko – the dog which Shannon and Sunir are baby-sitting when Shannon’s parents are travelling in Europe for a holiday. Also on Friday evening they all went to see a movie called ” Cooking with Stella”. – with a cross-cultural theme  – a hubby ( a chef by professsion) of  a woman Canadian  diplomat in India (in Delhi) – trying to learn Indian Cooking from the Diplomat’s cook , Stella.  A Deepa Mehta & Dilip Mehta (her brother’s) effort.

On Saturday, the grandparents along with their mama & mami – spent shopping, eating out for lunch at Brar’s (in Mississauga) and then visiting Sunit at his store in Don Mills – from where they obtained Dvds for film Paa -and others. On Saturday evening, while Shannon was busy making preparations for the Easter party (at their house) on Sunday noon- the grandparents   and Sunir watched the Indian Movie called   “Paa “.     The film is based on a genetic condition known as Progeria and places emphasis on a father-son relationship.

On Sunday,  Shannon/Sunir had an Easter Party at their home – for noon  – for  relatives    . We had a great time . There was  a “egg in the spoon race ” as well as  the ” Easter Bingo ” for fun – apart from sumptuous lunch dishes. In the evening, after all had gone from the party, we had rest and then played cards (Bridge) till  from about 9.30 p.m to  11. 30 p.m.

Monday 5 April 2010

The grandparents returned back from Toronto to-day   and stopped by at Mackey to play with the grandkids (Sitara & Sachin) .

They arrived at Mackey at Nina/Sunjay’s place at about 5.30 p.m. – whed Sitara had just woken up from her afternoon nap.

Sachin was up and playing. Sitara had prepared an Easter Card for her nana/nani  –  and she gave that to them with all the flourish and fun. Sitara played with her nana & wanted to dance with music from her own new pink Barbie radio . Both nana & nani had a dance with her -she as usual dancing going round and round.  They all had dinner together .  Nana also read her a couple of books .

Sachin was all in good form and played with his nana & nani – of course separately and togather.   Sachin can sit very nicely by himself now and since yesterday he does move forward on his own by shuffling on his bum. His mom calls it ‘bum shuffle” . He is very athletic    when doing his “bum shuffle”  to move forward to get some toy or other.   He does roll for sometime now but cannot yet crawl. However, he tries very much to move on his belly and makes swimming like “leg movement” – and ends up moving but backward.   He does move measurably (backward) but not a big distance as yet. The foreward movement is done by “bum shuffle”   – sitting erect .   He is trying for crawling – it seems it will take some tiime before he can manage that. Only time will tell.

Thursday 8 April 2010

Today, kids came home (with their mom) to celebrate their nana’s 70th birthday. Their dad joined the celebration in the evening after work.

Sitara was all excited and spent the morning hugging and  being very nice to her nana -played with him “catch” – with the pink baloon.

Sachin was as usual a happy toddler – even though he got his 6 month vaccination.   This little toddler is strong and he did not cry for possible pain due to the vaccination.   He played with his toys (picking and choosing and playing and discarding ) – all by sitting nicely and erect on the living room carpet at his nana/nani home in Deep River.

In the evening after their afternoon nap , Sitara helped her nani to make chappatis   (Indian bread) . She rolled chappatis along with her nani – in fact she made/rolled  some 7 chappatis which were “shallow fried” by her nani. Sitara shared these chappatis with everyone – her mom, her nana, her nani & also her dad – who had just arrived from his work. However, she ate only the chappatis prepared by her nani-as a show of respect for nani’s effort.

Later, after dinner, she helped her nani & mom to spread icing on the birthday cake & a muffin. She helped her nana to extinguish the birthday candles and also to cut the cake.

The top is all, she expressed to stay the night (sleep over) at her grandparents home – which was music to grandparents. In fact she slept in Deep River at her nana/nani home. She got her books read and coddled by her parents, nana & nani before falling to sleep. She really was a s pecial guest – first time slept   over in the room made over for her – in the “Princess” motif.

Note: yesterday (Wednesday 7 April 2010) – was unique – in the sense that this was first time Sachin had left a voice mail   on his nana/nani phone. His chatterings sound was some 60 minutes long   – when his nana was away playing cards (social bridge) at Deep River Library and nani was out shopping groceries.

Sunday 11 April 2010

Today, both nana & nani went to Mackey to spend time with Sitara & Sachin – before they fly out to England in few days. It was planned to spend time with Sitara in the garden – raking and preparing the garden for planting later. However, the  day was gray and a bit cool & slightly windy. So it was decided not to spend too much time outdoors and catch cold prior to travel to England.

Also the roof contractor was there  putting in the new roof (he started the work yesterday on Saturday) -as the old roof on the Mackey house was found leaking last year.  This then gives a bit of a safety concern for the young child . Sitara had a few minutes of swing play and cursory dab at the sandbox.

Sachin was his usual self – all happy and learning to make sounds. He did say and repeated  “dada”  “dada” a couple of times as his daddy was caoxing him to say “daddy”   “daddy “.

After dinner and setting up the Dodge mini van  with kids cars seats — to make it ready for travel to Ottawa airport to take the family to embark on the plane – Sitara expresssed her desire to spend a night at nana/nani house in Deep River.     This was music to her nana/nani ears . She travelled with her nana/nani in the new 2010 Toyota Corolla to Deep River and after having  few books read to her by her nana & then nani  – she went to sleep nicely.

She is a special guest at her nana/nani home and they loved every minute of it. She enjoyed too with all the love and charm that enthused from her soul.

Monday 12 April, 2010

The morning came bright and sunny. Sitara slept well and woke up at about 8.30 a.m. She was a doll – drank her milk, went to potty and got her self ready (of course helped by her nani). She then ate her breakfast  – completed two puzzles -both of Princess matrix – but though a bit complex for  a 2 1/2 year old – completed these in no time. She like puzzles and do these very methodically   and with ease. After the puzzles , she went into the kitchen and worked with her nani to make   dough for chappatis. She made her  own while nani made the rest.   She then had a bath and got ready to go to the park with her nana. She hugged and  hugged and kissed and played with her nana as she got ready – helped by her nani.

Her nana took her to the park behind the house – an open park but with no swing set etc for the kids. She had a ball (black & white with some air out) with her- which she and nana played catch for a few minutes and then kicked the ball around. She does good kicking – took the ball across the park by kicking it.

She want  to go on a swing set and that she expressed very politely to   her nana  . Her nana then took her to the park on Huron Road where there was a swing set.   She enjoyed her swing and wanted to go higher and higher. She and Her nana sang the following song (in a melodious tune) while she was swinging.

Sandy

Sandy Randy

Sandy Randy Candy

Sandu Randy Candy

Sandy Randy

Sandy

repeated few times in a chorus mode (by her nana & her) and enjoyed the thrill of singing it.   It was just fabulous.

After that her nana brought her home – he left for lunch at Bears Den with Dale (his stock expert) and she was entertained by her nani who prepared her a grilled cheeze sandwich -which she enjoyed eating. Funny her nana also had a grilled cheeze sandwich for lunch at Bears Den.

After her lunch, she joined her nani to roll the dough (earlier prepared) to   make chappatis. She rolled  more than 10 chappatis. All well done.

After that she went to sleep (her afternoon nap) – a bit late than usual but all satisfied – of course before  that she completed few puzzles and had a couple of books read to her by her nana (such ”  Donald had a bad day ”  and ‘ Pinnochio ” ) .

Note: Her favourite question often is ” What’s that noise?     This is always so since when she can communicate. She picks up any unusual sound – a truck passng on the road when she  is inside the home or a stone clinker hitting the car when she is in the car – when the car is running on the road.  Her vocabulary is extensive for a 2 1/2 year old girl and she can articulate what she wants to say or want – all in polite and charming way.

By the way, she stayed another night at her nana/nani home.   This is the first that she has stayed overnight in Deep River (alone without her parents & brother) for two consecutive days.

Tuesday 13 April 2010

This morning was also bright and sunny. Sitara woke up nicely at about 8.00 a.m.   After waking, she had her milk and got ready . She then ate her breakfast – milk and cereal. She liked Kelogg corn flakes and Kashi cereal.   Half way thru her  breakfast, she wanted to sit on her nana’s lap and finish her breakfast. She ate every lttle mosel of the cereal.

Once the breakfast was over , she did dabble into a few small puzzles and then she went outdoors with her nana. She learnt about placing biological waste into Compost , played a few minutes in the backyard but then wanted go to the “park with swing set”.   Howver, not like yesterday, when they went in the car – today she wanted to go by her stroller – walking. So both she & her nana went walking (she   of course in her stroller) to the Huron Road Park – which is quite near to the Deep River house.       She enjoyed her swing – again both she & her nana sang the song made yesterday ( Sandy ; Sandy Randy ; Sandy Randy Candy) . She also enjoyed going on the titter totter.     Nani remained at home preparing lunch

After coming home, all  sat for lunch – she had a hamburger and french fries.     She also did exercises (gymnastic style)  with her nani in the living room – using towals as mats.   Then she went to have her afternoon   nap – very satisfied and lovingly.

After she woke up at about 4.30 p.m -she got ready – all helped by her nani and then  waited for her daddy to pick her up to take her to Mackey. Her daddy and she went to Mackey at about 5.00 p.m.

She was   a great guest – very understanding and charming and all playful and hugs and kisses. Boy, she can converse!!

Wednesday 14 April 2010

Both nana/nani went to Mackey to spend time with the grandchildren – a day before they fly to London.   It was a great time together – though nana went away for the afternoon to play his social bridge card game at the library, Deep River. Note their nana & his partne, Marcel, scored some 6400 points – a tad bit lower than what they achieved during last month (some 7900 points) . Anything over 6000 points get each of them a big chocolate bar (Mr. Big).

However, he (nana) was back before 5.00 p.m and kids were having their afternoon nap.   All had dinner together and kids played with each of the grandparents and their parents as the mood would dictate. Then they went to sleep before nana/nani left to go to Deep River.

Note: This day, the baby Sachin had sprouted his two front teeth (bottom)   and these were visible a bit.

Tuesday 20 April 2010

Well, they did not go to England after all. The flight which was planned on Thursday 15 April was cancelled due to heavy Volcanic Ash clouds blanketing England. The volcano ash came from a volcano which erupted in Iceland.   Volcanic eruption in Iceland

REUTERS/   Icelandic Coast Guard/Arni Saeberg/Handout

A huge cloud of ash formed from the eruption of a volcano on the Eyjafjallajoekull glacier in Iceland.
Luckily we found out  early in the morning about the cancellation of Air canada flight on Thursady (15 April) and luckily   Sunjay/Nina had not left home (Mackey) to go to Ottawa. A rearrangement to travel was agreed with Air Canada for Wednesday 21 April ( the day  nana – being the Chair, had organised a program for the Engineering local Chapter ). So there was this  dilemma of missing that event in case the flight is on. However, the volcanic ash problem was not over as yet and to-day (on Tuesday 20 April 2010) Nina/Sunjay postponed their visit to  London until in June .
It is safer that way – but who knows how long this uncertainty about the Volcanic Ash clouds remains .
On Saturday 17 April 2010, Sitara (being here in canada and not gone to London. UK ) went to her Gym class at Mackenzie High School building . This was her  last day of the Duct Gym program  for the season  and she really enjoyed it.   Both parents were there, Sachin was there – all happy and contented in his daddy”™s lap  for a  while and then with his nani . Both nana & nani also went to witness Sitara”™s work at the  Gym.
Today ( Tuesday 20 April, 2010) the whole family spent time at nana/nani home in Deep River. Sunjay is on vacation from work and thus was able to spend time with the family.   Sachin and Sitara always enjoy their visits to nana/nani home.
After lunch , Sitara and Sachin had their nap and the adults played cards   (whists) . After the kids”™ nap, all went to the park (near marina/lighthouse area in Deep River). Sitara enjoyed her slides and also throwing pebbles in the Ottawa River.  Sachin was contented to be coddled by adults and outdoor air.
After the park visit, all came home – hungry and ready for dinner. First, Sachin  got his bottle of milk . He was nourished by his dad . Sachin enjoyed the bottle well and to-day he started to hold the bottle by himself – though a bit nervously  . It won’t be long when he will independently hold his milk bottle.  Also when he was having his solid food later, he got his first taste of yogurt made at home by his nani .   He liked it.
During dinner, Sitara expressed her wish to have a sleep-over at her nana/nani home.   This was convenient too as next day she was going to her BabySitter and thus she can be taken there by her nana rather than coming all the way from Mackey. So she spent night in Deep River. She always is an excellent guest and family member.
Wednesday 21 April 2010
Sitara spent the day at her BabySitter – taken there by her nana/nani. In the evening she was picked by her parents   – who spent the evening at Deep River and shared dinner with the grandparents.   Sitara & Sachin were as usual very loving.
In fact Sitara expressed her desire to spend another night (sleep-over) at her nana/nani place. Which was allowed and she slept over.
On Thursday 22 April – she spent time with her nani and went outdoors in the backyard and the park behind the backyard. There she did bubbles and played with a couple of kids who had also come to the park . She saw kite flying and was excited about it.  Her nana had gone in the morning to Petawawa to play   bridge and came back  to join Sitara and her nani for lunch.
After afternoon nap, she was driven to Mackey by her nana/nani in their new 2010 Toyota Corolla. In the car she wanted her nani to sit beside her on the backseat . Both of them had a good joyful conversation   and it seems Sitara was  very much enjoying her time with her nani.
Then somewhere, when approaching close to Mackey, she started to sing rhythmically the following lyrics – that she had made up there in the car.
I       yum yum

I       yum   yum

 yum yum
and repeating it – very musical to the ears.
When asked, she said it was to remind that it was food (meal) time – as it getting to be about 5.30 pm in the evening.
After, arriving at Mackey, all had dinner at Nina/Sunjay home
.
Note:   As Nina/Sunjay had postponed their travel to UK until June – they had decided to take their tour of USA now rather than as earlier planned to go there after coming from UK.
They are leaving for Pennsylvania, USA   tomorrow on Friday 23 April 2010. Both kids will have nice tour and meet some of their relations (Sunjay’s side).

Being Grandparents -15

This post is a continuation of  the earlier posts (Being Grandparents ,Being Grandparents – 2, Being Grandparents – 3, Being Grandparents – 4, Being Grandparents – 5, Being Grandparents -6,Being Grandparents -7, Being Grandparents -8 , Being Grandparents  -9  ,  Being Grandparents -10, Being Grandparents -11, Being Grandparents -12,  Being Grandparents -13 & Grandparents -14)   as the previous  posts were becoming a tad bit busy.

Friday 18 December 2009

Yesterday both Sitara & Sachin came to Deep River  with their mom.   They came and visited the Grandparents in the afternoon -had lunch . Sitara’s time for nap came about and she was tucked in the crib (that her Grandparents have in the previous   Sunir’s room). Today, she was just playful and did not go to sleep. She kept talking and playing in the crib. At about 3.30p.m she was calling her nana . Repeating “nana” “nana” “nana” . So her nana went to see her in the room and after that she just wanted to come out of the crib.   Her nana brought her out and then cajoled her to go to sleep. Sleep (rest) is necessary for babies -she is just 2 years and 5 months old . Her nana  tried to put her to sleep on the bed (in her mom’s previous room) . read her a story book but she kept playing with her ‘toy baby – made of cloth & rags  as well as  with her stuffed elephant (she calls him -“hathi” – an Indian word for an elephant). Well she did not sleep and finally we (her mom) decided to bring her up and let her play . She had also time to watch her Mickey Mouse movies before supper.

Sachin was all content sleeping and having his feed etc. He is   very playful and responds well -however today he was more resting .

Today (i.e Friday) Sachin went for a swim at Petawawa with his mom. His grandparents also joined though only his nani went for the swim with him (& his mom) . His nana waited in the foyer of the DunDonald Hall . He had a tour of the facility – gym. pool  and walking tracks etc.   His nana then joined the Gym -along with his nani – for 6 months. Paid the dues ($87.00 for six months).

After the swim , all went for shopping and then went to Toyota dealer in Petawawa . His nana was thinking of buying a new car (Toyota Corolla) and had done previously some investigation and dealt with the Car Salesman. He needed the consent of his nani and mom -as to the   choice he is making is the right one.   Sachin was in his car seat – observing but quiet. Sachin came with us for   a test drive -in the Toyota Corolla LE – a car which was a pre-owned car with only 1800 km on it. However we all collectively decided not to buy a pre-owned car but go for a new one . So his nana/nani made the deal for a Toyota Corolla CE- with enhanced Conveneince Package – and traded in their 2001 Neon (Chrysler) car .   So sachin became part of a big purchase for his nana/nani today.

Tuesday 22 December 2009

This evening we were all invited to pre-Christmas Party at Ken/Leela house. Sitara and sachin had come with their mom and their dad came a bit later -as he was busy at the office. The grandparents came separately and when her nana came inside Ken’s home – Sitara was there all runninmg to he nana and just jumped upto his embrace. She remained with nana for an extended time – onle wanting his warmth and love. She was the only child so far and she was a bit bewildered with all the adults and needed protective cover. After while Hiten and his brother Kevin came and slowly Sitara became more relaxed anmd enjoyed the party very much. She also was happy to see her dad -which made her to enjoy  as she was now with her  familiar family members. Ray (Ken’s son) who has come home from Toronto played with Sitara which made Sitara a bit excitable for fun.

Sachin was all okay – had his usual feed and sleep but towards the end was cranky as it was getting very warm and noisy at teh aorty and he had been missing his sleep. His nana took him in his hands and slowly he came around and stopped crying. He responds well to his nana and usually cools down, So he did but then his nana got a bit tired holding him and thus gave him to his mom. Oh! Boy, his crying started again and would not stop. So his nana & his mom decided to rock him in a impromtu hammock (using his blanket) and rocked and he loved it . His nana sang him a song (Ramaya Vasta Vaya Ramaya vasta Vaya – an Indian Bollywood song) and he fell asleep within   a few minutes . It was  somehow soothing to him. This song, his nana sang to him for the first time since he was born . His nana used to sing this song to Sitara since she was born but had forgotten about it till Sachin’s mom had jolted his nana’s memory a few days ago.   So it became useful this evening.

What fun!

Friday 25 December 2009 (Christmas day)

This was the first Christmas for Sachin & the third for Sitara. It is the day , both the parents and grandparents wanted to celebrate very joyfully with the kids but primarily, Sitara being 2 years and 5 months old , to note and enjoy Sitara’s happy expresssions at the tiem of Gift opening. She   can communicate what she feels and also what she wants very clearly and very charmingly. Well Sachin being only about 5 months old -was to be cuddled and given his toys and gift and have hin participate fully.

So as usual (since last year) ,we have two Christmas gift sharing parties – one on Christmas Day and one after Sunir & Shannon arrive from Toronto. Shannon & Sunir come the day after the Christmas Day as they spend the Christmas Day with  Shannon’s parents  as they are in Toronto and live not far away and this way they also can cekbrate Christmas with Shannon’s sisters and grandparents.

This year , we (nana & nani) went to Mackey on Friday (Christmas Day) in the morning about 11.00 a.m . The Christmas tree at Sunjay’s home was resplendent with lights and many ornaments and a star at the top.So Sitara was all excited  about the gifts under the tree but she was restrained in her behaviour. She saw her nana/nani also came with gifts and placed these under the tree. Sitara was all active to rearrange the gifts under the tree  – all packages of similar colors were to be kept together etc.  Even then she was not rushing to open any gifts as she was told by her mom that they were not yet ready.   When Her mom was ready – getting Sachin fed and ready – Sitara was promped to  obtain  her gift- ofcourse she was  helped  to  pick out the gifts. One by one she  opened her  gifts – from her parents, from Sachin and from her nana/nani    . She got a camera from Sachin (pink color) and books, games and clothes from her parents   and grandparents. For each present, she spent good easy time to open each of the gift, unwrap it majestically, savour it, say thanks and give hugs & ‘I lov you’ to her parents, brother and nana/nani. She was just in the form and mood without even getting wild or excited wrongly – though excited for having fun and contentment.   After that Sachin was taken on the lap first by his mom and the by his dad 0 to open his gifts. of course he is a baby but he was helped to play and touch the gifts.

We had lunch and then we spent the afternoon together. This  day Sitara graduated to join us at the main table   (away from her usual Child High Chair). She got a booster seat (to be put on the regular chair). She was just good conversationalist and kept us all very entertained.

Sitara gone to have her nap about 3.00 p.m. After dinner together, nana/nani returned back to Deep River.

Saturday 26 December 2009

Sitara & Sachin’s uncle Sunir & Shannon Auntie (SunirMama & ShannonMami  ) travelled from Toronto to come home (Deep River) to celebrate Christmas with family. They stopped in Mackey to spend sometime with the kids & their parents.   Both Siatara & sachin had some time to get re-acquainted with their mama & mami.   After that Sunir/Shannon drove to Deep River to be at home. We had good dinner and then played cards – exchanging tidbits and memory notes .

Sunday 27 December 2009

This day we all were going to Pembroke for a family portrait. Nina?Sunjay & kids were coming from Mackey and we all (Sunir/Shannon & us) travelled from Deep River. The photo shoot was at 11.00 a.m. at Mike’s studio . We all arrived in time . The photo (the family portrait and others)  shoot was complete by about 2.00 p.m – Sitara was all excited and went a bit in “rinning” mood and would not stand steady for long but all in all she gave good poses. Sachin was happy in the beginning but then went a bit ib crying spell – I guess due tu locale and dark room etc.

Ahter the photo shoot, all came back to Deep River- we had nice light lunch – Sitara did not take her nap -as she was wide awake from all the excitement from the photo shoot and also saw lots of gifts under the Christmas tree at her garndparents home.   The Christmas tree was all lighted with colored lights and well decorated with all the ornaments and laso had family ornaments collected over the years when both Nina & Sunir were kids.   After lunch and sometime to relax and feed Sachin – the gifts were opened. Sitara  was just majestics -all content for her own gifts and sharing with all others  .  She distributed others gifts too and let Sachin enjoy his gifts . The family was all content and happy with each others sharing.

After that we had dinner – Johanne (Nina’s friend) and Pankaj (family friend in Deep River)  also joined the dinner.

Sitara just was ecstatic with her ShannonMami. They played and talked. Her ShannonMami read books to her and together they decorated a Ginger Bread House and had lots of fun. Sitara has a singing voice and would draw her ShannonMami’s attention   by calling after her “ShannonMami     ShannonMami” and would cuddle with her.

Sachin was pampered by both Sunir & Shannon and he as usual will give  a smile and responds with  infant grunts  .

Everyone (except Pankaj – who left   a bit early) then  stayed and enjoyed each others company  until Nina/Sunjay and  kids retired to Mackey late in the evening.

Note: Sunir & Shannon left for Toronto on Monday after lunch.    The weather was not very conducive for travel- in accordance with their  cell-phone contact-  white-outs etc and  passing a couple  of accidents on the roads. However  they were safely back at home in Totonto – late about 9.00 p.m.

Nina/Sunjay  & Kids went to NorthBay from  Mackey for the day.     They seem to have weathered the weather well and came home safely.

Tuesday 29 December 2009

During the Christmas opening of gifts – Sitara got a supply of normal child panties. So today – she graduated away fom her pull-ups and went to wear the normal panties. She is just getting used this new way of handling her bodily functions and is slowly but definitely getting used to going to bathroom by herself and using toilet facilities.

Thursday 31 December 2009

This is the end of the year 2009 during which we had an addition to the family – here in Canada.

In 2008 we had an addition – when Sunir got married to Shannon in October – thus we had a new member to our family.

But in 2009, we were just delighted to welcome Sachin – who was born on 20 July to Nina/Sunjay at the Ottawa Hospital. He is very much loved and coddled by his sister, Sitara – who is only 2 years older than him.   Sitara always looks after him and offers him her toys etc and lots of kisses & hugs. She is just proud and goes around showing off her brother. She is also cognizant of his wants and keeps away when he is feeding or sleeping or changing (though she likes to help when he is changed and washed).   She is never tired in taking Sachin’s name   “Sachin _ _ _ Sachin” –  I luv him – she says so lovingly.

Well sachin is now 5 months old and he starts sitting a bit, rolling and movinga bit. He likes to communicate – never dull but always responding with a chuckle and s giggle to those who coddles him.

This being the last day of the year- we all were invited to the New Year Eve Party at Usha/Subhash house. Nina/Sunjay & Sitara & Sachin came from Mackey to the party and we (nana & nani joined from Deep River). This is Sachin’s first New Year party and he was just fabulous. Very enjoying – all cool and smiling and no crying at all – though party went until 1.00 a.m – before they retired to their house to Mackey. Sitara – this being the third New Year Party – she was  dressed in a fine dress –  a princess gown – lavender . She always enjoys parties and she has this technique of being coquetty and smiling and friendly with everyone. She also has a good vocabulary and her singing type voice mesmerises everyone. Her tossing of her long hair is an art she learnt herself in these short life -which just makes everyone just go ‘ga ga”.

Best of everything to the kids &  both of  our children & their spouses .

Their (Sitara & Sachin’s) nana/nani have started some investment  for each one of them (this year)  – so they can have some help in future for their higher education  & miscellaneous needs.

We love you – you make our lives young and enjoyable.

Recipe – Peanut Butter Cookies from Oprah’s website

Double-Delight Peanut Butter Cookies
Recipe created by Carolyn Gurtz, winner of the 2008 Pillsbury Bake-Off Contest

It’s a twist on the classic peanut butter cookie! Crunchy outside, creamy inside, with just a hint of cinnamon. A real winner.
Ingredients:
Makes 24 cookies
·                 1/4 cup Fisher dry-roasted peanuts , finely chopped
·                 1/4 cup granulated sugar
·                 1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
·                 1/2 cup JIF creamy peanut butter
·                 1/2 cup powdered sugar
·                 1 roll (16.5 ounces) Pillsbury refrigerated peanut butter cookies , well chilled
·                 Crisco original no-stick cooking spray
Heat oven to 375 °. In small bowl, mix chopped peanuts, granulated sugar and cinnamon; set aside.

In another small bowl, stir peanut butter and powdered sugar until completely blended. Shape mixture into 24 balls, about 1 inch each.

Cut roll of cookie dough into 12 slices. Cut each slice in half crosswise to make 24 pieces; flatten slightly. Shape 1 cookie dough piece around 1 peanut butter ball, covering completely. Repeat with remaining dough and balls.

Roll each covered ball in peanut mixture; gently pat mixture completely onto balls. On ungreased large cookie sheets, place balls 2 inches apart. Spray bottom of drinking glass with Crisco original no-stick cooking spray; press into remaining peanut mixture. Flatten each ball to 1/2-inch thickness with bottom of glass. Sprinkle any remaining peanut mixture evenly on tops of cookies; gently press into dough.

Bake 7 to 12 minutes or until edges are golden brown. Cool 1 minute; remove from cookie sheets to cooling rack. Store tightly covered.

Wednesday 14 October 2009

Today both Sitara & Sachin came to their Grandparents home in Deep River along with their mom -to see the Renovation work of kitchen & downstairs bathroom – started today by the Contractor (Rob) & then electrical work by David.   There was demolistion work going on and Sitara was just watching but not saying much. It is better she saw the construction work -as she will be losing her old kitchen habitat and would have wondered what happened – if she was not shown this renovation.     She actually took this in her stride and spent time with her nana in the Recreation room watching Mickey Mouse skits – earlier recorded by her nana. The   Mickey mouse TV sketches are very popular with her – she is only 2 year & 2 months old and she understands the story line.

Sachin spent some time with his nana & smiled and then went to cry a bit. Her nani & nana gave him “rolling” in a make-do  swing (of his blanket) for a few minutes and he was quiet as a nice boy. After that he spent an hour or so in his nani”™s hands . Of course he was fed and looked after by his mom also.  And Siatra was also fed by her mom – the chili (Vegetarian) that her nani had prepared.

Both the kids make life bright and lightens up any burden that may be bothering  their seniors.

By the way, Sitara is out of her regular diapers (since about last couple of days) and she is now getting used to go to potty when such need arises.   It will take some time before she is completely out of any so-called “accidents”.   She is now wearing “the pull-ups” . She  gets  a penny for each accomplishment for her piggy bank. She loves her piggy bank and is proud of it.

Saturday 17 October, 2009

This was the Diwali day (celebrated in India and alll over the world) and it was first Diwali Program that Sachin attended. The program was organised by the “Deep River-Pembroke” East Indian Community at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Pembroke   . It was third for Sitara (she being 2 years 2 months) . Both kids enjoyed the party specially Sitara as she could run around and play with other kids. Though it ws a bit difficult as most kids were doing their own things -all being excited seeing so many people and kids. Sachin, of course , spent most of his time in the seater but he was contented and seemed happy.

During the day Sitara was busy (in the morning) to go to her Gymnastic class at Mckenzie High School and the to a birthday party where she got opportunity to touch live snake & lizard etc (as the host family had brought a kid entertainer from Ottawa with the pet animals.)

 NEW

 Saturday 24 October 2009

This day was a bit busy for us. As the work on The Kitchen & bath renovation is continuing at our house, we had to go to Pembroke for some purchases – such as 500w Electric baseboard heaters & lights for the underneath of the kitchen cupboards. But before that we had to be at a breakfast  meeting (at Shamron Suite Restaurant in Deep River) – with the PEO President-Elect. She had come to Deep River, the previous day to attend our (the local PEO Chapter’s) event to present Licence Certificates to some 6 engineers.  Me being the Chair, we were really busy otganising this event  and also to look after the renovation work.   At the event, the local MPP Hon. John Yakabuski also attended to congratulate the Engineers receiving the  Certificates.

In the evening we were invited for dinner at Roy’s house. Both Sitara & Sachin also came to dinner with their parents. However, before goingto the dinner, they stopped by the house. Sitara was in her nice white outfit and she came in the house to meet with us . She is taking the renovation work in her stride – she is losing her usual cupboard & space to go around but she is absorbing the change and quietly goes in the Recreation Room   downstairs – carefully so she is not hurt at the unfinished kitchen. She usually eases herself in the room and would want to watch Mickey Mouse movie.   Though this evening she just was in time when her nana was beginning his prayer to Shree Jalaram and she joined in . A bit perplexed but always very curious and absorbing all thats he experiencing.   She then looked at the cupboard where we have more God’s idols but there she did pick out her small ceramic bear & bunny – which she wanted for her to take . She got those to hold and carry upstairs and she was happy.

After that we all  proceeded to dinner at Roy’s (& Solly) house for dinner. Sitara likes to be friends with their younger son Ethan – though he is very senior to Sitara. Sachin remained contented in his Car seat.   Sitara was with her nana there for a while – just geting used to other people in the room . Kids are initially shy – so was SItara but slowly (after she had opened her backpack) and showed off her collection of CDs   (kids movies) , she joined the other kids to watch TV and play with them.

Sachin was wonderful – quiet . But after his feed, he was cuddled by various aunties at the dinner party . Then he started to cry a bit which cascaded to full throatle cry when he was pampered by his Rajni Aunite. His nana stood up to see if he can caress him   No sooner his nana picked him , he went all quiet and enjoying himself with the touch and feel of nana’s warmth. All were quite surprised how   a crying kid can go so suddenly into quiet mood.

I am told by his mom that Sachin is now holding himself well – he can hold his head by himself and can sit in the bumbo seat as well as ExerSaucer seat by himself. This is when he is 13 weeks old.

Monday 26 October 2009

This day Sachin & Nina came to Deep River and came home. As usual Sachin spent his time sleeping and having his feed. Sitara has gone to her babysitter’s home for the day.   Sachin then in the evening went with his dad & mom for “the baby’s instant massage” experience . Sitara stayed behind to complete her dinner with her nani .

Thursday 28 October 2009

Both Sachin & Sitara came to their grandparents home in Deep River at about 2.00 p.m. today after going to FEN activities both in Deep River  & Chalk River. Sitara & her mom had lunch in Chalk River.

Sitara is taking our Kitchen modification in stride . Today she used the downstairs washroom as the upper area was all draped for painting of the wall & ceiling. She was  a bit concerned about the removal of the previous shower enclosure (and a small hole left -near the drain -in the floor) and also the removal of the ceiling  in the washroom. She enquired as to what happened. I explained that we are renovating bathroom also along with the kitchen and there is construction going on. The bathroom will be new in a few days. She is only 2 years and 3 months and understand the commotion of construction. The upstairs     —  the Kitchen renovation is almost complete. To-day the painting was finished – though electrical work is delayed as the Electrician has hurt himself ( I understand that he fell of a ladder and cracked his ribs). The kitchen looks amazing with new cabinets, cupboards & appliances.   Sitara first had a view with her nani. She just spoke out loud “wow ! Wow! I like it “. She is amazing expressing herself so clearly and with good emotions. Later her nana took her for the tour of the new kitchen -letting her open all the cupboards, drawers and touching appliances. I also showed her a tiny (half size in width) cupboard -which I let her know that will be hers – her cups, plates   etc will be kept there.

Sachin was a happy boy. Her mom left him with his nana (i.e.me) and went shopping for few groceries. Sachin smiled and responded to his nana’s talk (you know for an infant one talks about him and his family etc and we sing and make sounds to attract his attention). I did allthat and Sachin just was playful and responded. Sitara was watching her usual Mickey Mouse movie but she came over to play with Sachin. She lied down with him and held his hand – so politely and lovingly.   She seeems to be in heavan playing with her baby brother. She also said to Sachin ‘I luv you”. Is n’t this just happiness to their nana -hearing and enjoying such love and playing.   Their mom came and was ecstatic to see Sitara lying &Playing with Sachin on the quilt on the floor. She brought her camera took some shots.

All of  us had dinner – in the temporary  dining room/kitchen in the lower basement. Their dad came late from work   but then we spent time together – getting  our minivan ready -as   they want to take it to Ottawa tomorrow. Sachin will go with them but Sitara will spend the day with her babysitter and in the evening she will spend time with her grandparents.

Sitara   , at her age of 2 years & llessthan 3 months – speaks fluently and knows many words -her vocabulary is astounding. She had a good conversation with her   nani re: new renovated kitchen and other things.

Saturday 31 October, 2009

The Halloween night arrived. Both Sitara & Sachin came to Deep River in the evening with their parents     – so that they can go out for “trick or treat” .   They had dinner and then got ready for going out. Sitara was dressed as an “Eyore” and the boy got dressed as  “tiger (teeeger)”.   Sitara also took some candies (smarties) from her grandma’s heap (which she has kept ready to give to other kids who may come to the door during the evening.   Both Sitara and Sachin got play trucks (small ones) – one   each in their Halloween loot bag – from their nani/nana to play around  .   Sitara had a ball of a time  – though she got to know about candies – lot of sugar – she plopped (licked)  a whole lollypop – sticky face and also smarties and wanted more. Hopefully she does not get hooked as sugar makes kids hyper.

Thursday 5 November 2009

Today both grandchildren (Sitara & Sachin) came to our home in Deep River with their mom. This was the day with the first snow of the season.   For deep River to get snow thsi early — is a bit surprise but it has been known to get snow early in some years.   Usually thes now come s at about the Christmas time.

This is the first snow to greet  Sachin in this beautiful world. He is just over 3 months old.   He is so cool and calm boy. Always responds with smile and kiddie language (ooh etc). He spent few hours with his nana – as he does these days now.

Today was the day when all (Nina, Sunjay & Sitara) got H1N1 vaccination – Sachin being only 3 months old cannot get the shot. I am told Sitara took her shot very well – no crying – but again she was inquisitive to look at how it was adminstered.   H1N! shots can be painful and can develop lumping – but Sitara consoled her mom for her (mom’s) swelling while ignoring hers. A brave girl.

Sunday 8 November 2009

These  past few days   , last Thursday, Saturday and today the kids came home – as their dad was working overtime at the office . We spent tome together . Sachin spent quite many hours with his nana – talking and giggling (frothing at the mouth ) etc. Sitara spent tome with her nana & nani – watching Mickey Mouse movie, Shark Tale on her nana’s DVD player (that was on Saturday) and then to-day she went with her nana to outdoors (in her stroller) to the park -close to the house on Huron Road close to Ridge Road – where she had a ball of atime on the swing (in fact she tried out all four swings in the park).   After lunch they went to Petawawa – for Sitara’s swimming and her grandparents went to the TownHall to participate in the Unity in Diversity program .

I was told that Sachin also went swimming with his parents & Sitara. He enjoyed it. At 3 months – this was his first dip in the pool.

By the way, Sitara exhibits larger vocabulary but also very mature conversation – an excellent cognitive traits for 2 yeR 3 months old girl.   She responds with “You are welcome” when anyone says her “Thank you”.   Today when we went out to the park for her to enjoy swings in the warm sunny afternoon (just before noon) , upon return on the road (Dalton Road) to our house – I saw   a light burning in our home. When I ask Sitara , does she knows where nana’s houseis -she immediately replied yes and pointed to the house in front (across the Rutherford Av) -coming from Dalton Road. I   siad that a light is burning in the house – did she see it? She said yes but it is an outdoor light. Such grasp – which even Ihad failed to notice.   After that car noise came from behind – but is was a truck passing. She said to me  nana it is truck and not a car – then showed me a car (parked on the side of the road)  and said that is   a car.   So she knows the difference between a car & a truck but more so to know when to  use that knowledge in converstion – like correcting me on my “Faux pas” for calling the noise from a truck as “noise from a car” . Good cognitive understanding. Besides all this is done so very politely .

Sunday 15 November 2009

This day being their nani’s birthday, kids and their parents took her along with their nana for dinner to the only  restaurant in Deep River which provides East Indian Food -Lil’s Restaurant (in the same building as  the town’s PetroCan Gas Station) .

Their nani had a ball of a time – Sitara saying “Happy Birthday ” repetitiously in a nice sweet voice – and Sachin remaining quiet and contented in his car seat – which was brought in the Restaurant so he can remain comfortable.

All had a  great time enjoying the food which was very tasty and well done. After dinner & party, the kids went home to Mackey with their parents.

Tuesday 17 November 2009

I am told by Sachin’s mom that he has started “giggling” and responds to “giggle” by her mom. She tried “giggling” when she was talking to us on the phone and Sachin responded . He was giving a laugh too.   A happy boy.

Friday 20 November 2009

Sachin’s (& of course Sitara’s too) grandparents went to Toronto – their grandpa was attending a conference – related to Engineering.   Sachin & Sitara steyed the Friday night in Deep River (at their Grandparents home) with their parents   as there was a celebration at the Deep River Town Hall in the evening for lighting the   Chrtistmas Tree and a visit by the Santa Clause.   Sitara enjoyed teh function and dancung etc. The boy was as usual relaxed and just be with the family.   He slept in his grandprents bedroom (as   were away to Toronto) – on the grandparents bed. I am told that he slept well – for a full 8 hours without waking up.

When the grandparents returned back on Monday 23 November (at 5.30 p.m.), the kids  were at Deep River home again  as Sachin was going for his weekly massaging.   Both kids were happy and Sitara was havng her dinner with her mom.   They went to their home at about 8.00 p.m.

Tuesday 24 November, 2009

This day Grandpa (nana) was invited by Hon. Marc Graneau – our Canadian famous Astronaut & Liberal Federal Member of Parliament- to his office (located at the Confederation Building in Ottawa) to talk about Canada & Nuclear Science – a subject that kids’ nana had earlier written about.   Both nana & nani went to Ottawa – the meeting was at 4.30 p.m   – Hon Regan and one of his associate were also present.     Well. after all the deliberations and presentation – nana & nani had squeezed in  a request  to Hon Marc Garneau  for his autograph – for our grandchildren. Mr. Garneau was very gracious (he has recently become a grandfather too- a month old grandson)  and he willingly gave autograph for Sitara, Sachin, Nina/Sunjay & Sunir/Shannon. Nani also got an autograph in her   Autograph Book.

Monday 30 November 2009

Sachin and his mom came to Deep River to spend some time with parents – after attending a  party with toddlers.   Sachin also goes for his messaging ( messaging for infants program) every Monday in the evening and this allows him & his mom to spend afternoon and dinner at our home in Deep River.   Sitara then joins in after her Day-care sojourn and their dad comes a bit later from his work.

This Monday Sitara played well with her nana & nani but more specifically with her nana. she goes saying “nana”  “nana” and wants books to be read to her. She also wanted to watch a movie ( a DVD that she   asked he mom to bring from home). The DVD is about – titled “Shark Tales”. After dinner she enjoyed the  movie with her   nana – while Sachin and his mom has gone to his  “message”  .

This little girl – 2 year & 4 months old – can understand and enjoy a movie for kids of age 7 or more.   She   enjoyed the whole movie without getting bored . H edad came home at about the last part of the movie abd then Sitara plated with him and her nani & hesrself before getting ready to do her “potty”, brushing of her teeth and getting ready then to go home.

Her mom & brother came home after his message. Sachin likes to play but when he goes a bit cranky – he calms down if we put him into a ‘hammock’ – hand made from a BLANKET or using a ready made Indian baby hammock -we earlier had  got from Kenya for his  uncle (“mama”) Sunir  – when he was a baby.

Both kids are joy to play with – especially Sitara as she can express and articulate herself . Sachin also responds well – to all the playful acts that we make.

Sunday 6 December 2009

Yesterday Saturday 5 December 2009 ,   the grandparents met with both the kids downtown Deep River.   They were with their parents to watch the Deep River Santa parade. This is Sachin’s first parade and Sitara’s second. All of them came from Gym at Mckenzie High School where Sitara goes   every Saturday for Gymnastic.   Sitara enjoyed the Santa parade as she understands the whole show , She likes the floats – especially with Santa or where kids are singing and dancing on the road. She says thank you when presented with candies by the float participitants.   Sachin remained in his car seat but in the ground next to his mom. He also got a few candies.   It was very beautiful and sunny day with snow (light) on the ground.

Both the kids and mom came to grandparents home  after parade but their dad went to office for work.   These days there is so much work due to urgency in reviving NRU. Kids always are playful and quite polite. Sachin has an involuntary activity – to burp when nana holds him and then spit on nana’s pullover.   He is so cute and guies good response with smiles and grunts.

Today garndparents went to Mackey to play with kids. Sitara immediately got her nana’s hand and led him to her work table to help in painting ( on papers with lined figures). After that she wnated to go out for making a snowman – as there was a light snow on the ground.   However, going out, she wanted to play with her blue truck, in the  play house – which is on outside ground – and on swing and slide besides making a snowman. Making snowman was a bit difficult as the snow was dry and not molding but what transpired was a “cuddly bear” shape . Sitara enjoyed all that. Then she sat down below the slide on a built-in bench and wanted to have picnic. So finally we got a glass of apple juice which she partook under the slide – enjoying her picnic. She was   all tired out and then we came inside.

She had lunch – not much – she is eating lightly these days .   After her brushing teeth and going on”potty” etc – she went to her usual sleep ( an afternoon nap). Of course she had nana read a couple of books before the lunch and a   book by her mom when going to nap.

Sachin was sleeping in his mechanical swing but got up- then his nana took him in his hand – when he played with nana and then had his mom fed him. He just likes to smile . These days  he rolls – which he did when nana puts him on the sofa   and then slides himself backword – almost half his length.

Note: Sachin is one kid who does not like soothers (what we call   a “nunu” ) – he just does not take it. No matter when we try to give him – he spits it out. I think he is following his mama (uncle) Sunir. Sunir when he was a toddler- would not take a soother.

 Wednesday 9 December 2009

This day we had the first big snow storm of the season. This was all over Canada and Eastern Ontario. We in Renfrew County also were drenched with about 10 inches of snow. Most plows (to clear the roads and driveways) were not yet quite upto the challenge as we had fabulous weather (sunny and bright)   till now.

Nina & both kids were at their home in Mackey – as it became dangerous   for the drive on the highways.

This gave the mom (Nina) a reflective time at home and she suddenly realised that she is a mother  of two kids.

Both kids are very polite and always smiling and playing – so  they are not putting any stress on the mom & family – and this they are like  part of family all this time. Even Sachin who is only 4+ months old is very quiet and no playful. Always responds to any chitter chattter with his own language. Sitara is just Sitara – she is very mature for her age. She plays very nicely and wants to have books read to her – knowing all her books by visual .

Thursday 10 December 2009

This day we all went to North Bay. Nina had to have her car (VW) serviced . So she asked us if we can accompany her as   she had two kids in tow. We (both nana & nani) were excited to go as it will give NIna a freer time in North Bay and us to spend time with the kids. Besides, we all can complete our Christmas shopping. There are more stores and varieties available in North bay- being a larger city.

Her nana had great time looking after Sitara – she is just a bundle of joy. She knows Walmart store and when her nana took her around in the cart – she had great sights and observations – she will identify her Dora & Princess items – such as DVDs , toys and would ask her nana that she wants that   or that – how she knows where all these items are stacked up. She is polite and enjoys picking up her items – all very balanced – no fuss and no mush.   She enjoyed playing with “kiddies” motorised boat, horses and trucks which are strewn all over the NorthGate Mall. Mind you we did not put any money as she would then spend more time there.

Sachin was as always cool and bundled but had his feed and just wenta long whereever everyone went. At one point when he became a bit tired – he cried a bit -so his nana & nani mad a hammock from his blanket and swung him back & forth, he enjoyed that and stopped crying.

Friday 11 December 2009

Today Sachin  & his mom went to swim in Petawawa . His nani also joined them.

After coming to Deep River from his swim, Sachin got his  bath (first since he was born) at his nani’s home.

This evening we all are going out for dinner (at Lil’s Restaurant – attached to PetroCanada Station on the Highway)  to celebrate holidays. We have invited our neighbours to join us – a Christmas present from us to them.

Note: Sitara had company at the dinner party. Her friend Jordan ( our neighbor`s granddaughter) was also there – with her mom. Both of them situated across the table – carried on their chitter-chatter ( converstion) and fun with his each other. Jordan had brought some pages (for painting by young kids).  She shared that with Sitara. During the whole evening of dinner – both of these kids were stars and entertained (indirectly) the adults with their exuberance, playfulness and eating  & enjoying their dinner without fuss.

All that time Sachin was a gentlekid – very calm in  sleeping in his carseat (which can be brought to the restaurant). He gave us the greatest gift of `being quiet`and not needing any special care.

Saturday 12 December 2009

Today  was Sitaras last Gymnastic session for the season.` Her nana & nani also went to McKenzie High School gym to watch Sitara . She was a younger participant compared to her colleagues (kids) but she held herself well – except she refused to go for jumping on tarpauline. She did continue to jump  and bounce on the adjoining platform.

Sunday 13 December 2009

Today, both Sitara & Sachin went in the mporning to AECL children party at Petawawa with their parents. This is their first AECL party they attended. After the party they came to Deep River in the afternoon – at their nana/nani`s  house to celebrate their mom`s birthday ( which actually is on Monday 14 December) but this being Sunday – it was relaxed time to celebrate the occassion. We all had a great time – with meal & nice icecream cake . Sitara kept singing “Happy Birthday to you mom” and was all along having fun, She is such a doll and always very playful and polite/considerate. Sachin was his usual self -all happy and smiling and just being a super infant.

Diwali Celebration
It is that time in the year when Indians celebrate Diwali – this year Diwali is celebrated on Saturday 17 October 2009.   A celebration of Diwali is a significant festival in the eastern religions such as Hinduism, Sikhism and Jainism .   Adherents of these religions celebrate Diwali as the Festival of Lights. During Diwali, lights and fireworks brighten the skies.
In India and Nepal, Diwali is a national festival and the aesthetic aspect of the festival is enjoyed by most Indians and Nepalese regardless of faith.
Diwali has a central message – “good” always wins over “evil” – against all odds but which may require focus and perseverance. From darkness unto light ”” the light that empowers us to commit ourselves to good deeds, that which brings us closer to divinity.
These days, Diwali is celebrated all over the world since the world has become more multi-cultural and is more tolerant of different faiths.
We in Canada celebrate the Diwali festival with gusto in large cities but even in small places like Deep River (and surrounding areas) , there is celebration with annual party during which the celebrants participate in plays, singing and floor dancing along with traditional dinner.
When we celebrate Diwali in Canada, it symbolises the genuine Indian Culture and it is also a symbol for   ” Unity In Diversity ” in action when all peoples join hands to celebrate the victory of Good over the Evil.
Diwali is a thread which binds a diverse community in togetherness and is increasingly becoming a vehicle for investing in mutual progress with respect for all.
In Canada,   the   celebration of Diwali provides us (those from the Indian Sub-Continent) an opportunity to showcase,   to the society-at-large,   our common Indian Culture and our values of tolerance and respect for all.
We wish the best for everyone.  Happy Diwali to all.
