“Deep River ” – an Afro American spiritual
A  formal banquet was held on the evening of Monday (8 November, 2010) by the President of India, Mrs. Pratibha Patil at the fabulous Rashtrapati Bhavan  (President’s Residence) in the Indian Capital, New Delhi   in honour of the President of United States, Mr. Barack Obama and his wife Michelle Obama – who were on an official visit to India.
I was thrilled to note that a North-East group “Shillong” Chamber Choir group in India presented   a spiritual   called            ” Deep River ” – an Afro-American hymn at the banquet for the visiting dignitaries and other guests. .
The 16-member team, led by pianist Neil Nongkynrih, also enthralled Obamas with other English, Hindi and even Khasi (local North East language) numbers.
I understand   that   “Deep River” is one of the best known of African American spirituals .
The lyrics that I   found from the internet are as below:
Deep River,
My home is over Jordan.
Deep River Lord.
I want to cross over into campground.
Deep River.
My home is over Jordan.
Deep River, Lord,
I want to cross over into campground
Oh, don’t you want to go,
To the gospel feast.
That promised land,
Where all, is peace.
Oh, Deep River, Lord,
I want to cross over into campground.
“You Tube” provide many versions of the song sung by different singers/groups.
“Deep River”  is a deeply emotional spiritual expressing the pains and hopes of struggle .
When we are coming to the 2010 Christmas season, I thought that this is an appropriate spiritual to guide us through our struggles in life with faith in ourselves and our God.
I believe  that it also reminds us of sufferings and pain of others in the community and around the world – who require our empathy and support.

October 2010

This month for a period, I lost my computer use due to virus attack . Only since about a couple of days back, I have the computer restored. Today is Sunday 24 October 2010, and both kids (Sitara and Sachin) came home in   the evening after Sitara had her swimming class at Deep River swimmimg pool (Mackenzie High School). Both their parents and nani went to be with Sitara and of course, Sachin was also gone with his parents to the pool – though he did not go into the pool but played around.

On  Tuesday 19th October,2010 of the month, Sachin went to the doctor in Deep River with his mom    and had his vaccination for the chicken pox.   SachinMan is a strong baby   – he did not cry or showed any pain during the day or after that.     On Tuesdays, their dad goes for squash or other sport (if feasible) and thus only comes for supper if he has no sport.

Sitara also goes to music class at Petawawa on Saturdays –  with her dad (if her mom is working) or with both parents when her mom is not working. On Saturdays, when Nina is working, Sachin spends the day at his garndparents .     When in Petawawa, after the music class, the parents take Sitara and Sachin for swimming at the  DunDonald Hall in Petawawa – of course after hvaing lunch at a restaurant.

Sitara has learnt some   Yoga postures from somewhere – and she demonstrates her skill on and off to her nana & nani.   on Tuesday 19 October, 2010 – she carried out a slew of Yoga postures to demonstrate to her nani andmom – her skills.   She is very good at rolling on her stomach, holding her legs behind   – by her hands.

This month Sitara has a grown a bit in age but  also in  maturity as she sleeps without any safety bars across her bed since Wednesday 20 October,2010.

On Thursday  , 21 October, 2010 when at her nana/nani home – she helped her nani to roll chappatis – her chappatis are neat and proper round and mostly of same size. She also helped her mom to make the pizza dough for the evening meal of pizzas along with helping to make some cookies too. She had been abit busy girl in the kitchen this day.

Sitara, these days . loves strawberries. She eats these at lunch time and supper time. Raw -well cut for her.   When she was about 2 years or less, she liked blueberries and sometimes peaches but she was not allowed strawberries at that time ( for fear of allergic reaction) . She is now allowed as she is 3 years and over – and she just laps these up so happily.

Wednesday 27 October, 2010

This day there was a power failure due to high wind in the area. So the kids could not stay at their home in Mackey as the water supply pump (well water) would not work (without electricity) . They were picked from the baby-sitter in Deep River in the evening by their dad and then gone home – but due to power failure in their area, it was decided to bring them  back to Deep River to their nana/nani home.

They & their dad had  dinner  and later joined by their mom too after her work.   It was decided to have   sleep-over by the kids at their nana/nani home . This is to give them more time for rest . Their parents left after the power was restored in the area of their home.   The kids slept well . On Thursday 28 October, their mom came early to deep River- this being her off days from work she spent time with the kid and grandparents.

Both the kids (Sitara & Sachin) were taken by their mom & nani to FEN   classes at the Mackenzie High School premises . There it was a special day as there were visiting dentists and speech therapist who came  out to provide a check-up to all the kids who came to the  FEN.    Both Sitara and Sachin had a sesson with the two specialists. Sachin is developing the back teeth (may be molars) . Sachin is speaking a lot but in his own formulated words and is trying to imitate his mom on normal words.   While when Sachin was at FEN with his nani – Sitara  went for her swimming class (with her mom) .

After swimming, she went back to FEN . All came home and had lunch .   After Sachin went to sleep, Sitara went to the Deep River Public Library with her mom and nani- from where they borrowed a DVD on Dora    . Sitara enjoyed that DVD after dinner at her nana/nani home. Their dad could not come for dinner as he was working late in the office.

After dinner, Sitara and Sachin were in a  playful mood and played a lot with each other and then with their nana/nani. Their mom also tried out their Halloween costumes ( Yellow/white Chicken outfit for Sachin and   a blue princess dress with  a tiara for Sitara) . The kids are going for the Halloween treat a day early this year . They will   go “treat or trick” first on Saturday to few of the friends house and then on Sunday again.  Sitara wanted her nana to tell her a story while she was relaxed on the living room sofa . Her nana tld her  few stories (as lib) – at least four – all fictional – mostly based on story books she likes .   Sachin was active and wanted to go up the stairs ( there are only 6 steps on each stair in the house) and he also came down the stairs by himself.  He  knows how to come down  but is a bit shy doing that as he remains careful not to hurt himself.   His nana also read him a children book (on cats) – he is only 15 months old but it is time that he learns to have books read to him.

Wednesday 24 November, 2010

Its a bit long time since I have made any entry on the kids’ shennanigans. This is because  I had been a slight busy on other  matters and then we (wife & I)  went to Toronto on 12th November ( to attend the Oshwal Diwali program -along with Sunir & Shannon) and also to attend an Engineering conference. We came back home on Sunday 21 November 2010.   Well both kids are fun at all times. They are doing fine though once in a while  each one of them catch slight cold  and also cough. It si getting colder  here and temperatures do gyrate  from – degrees (upto -5 degree) to slight positive .

Sachin has developed more back teeth and also one molar (upper right hand side)  . He is always very active and now walks fast trying to run. He also communicates well – to express his needs and whatever he wants to do – of course all in his baby ways – no clear words but though a couple at this time of his development- like “more” “more” . He also has become very fond of his nani – as she does feed and clean him whenever his mom is busy or gone away.     He does play with his nana very well and understand that nana also reads a book to him (such as “pickaboo” with pictures). He likes to explore areas in the house and likes  to dance and listen to Indian (Gujarati) music and dance. He knows the location of the record player and  knows how to work the   “power ” switch of the machine.

Sitara has developed – on her owm – dance steps – both Indian and Western moves . She likes to show these and she really enjoy the dancing – she also likes the Indian (Gujarati) music for dancing. We just wonder from where she learns this moves but she does “creates” her own by combinging her gymnastics  exercise steps and also yoga type moves and dancing that she observes on TV  (MickyMouse Clubhouse or other kids shows) . She somehow puts all this in her mind and develop her own unique moves and show these to us.

They do come to nana/nani home many times – which give both nana/nanai immense pleasure and fun.     Both nana/nani missed the kids emotionally when they (nana/nani) were in Toronto last time as described above.

Thursday 25 November, 2010

Today Sitara at her swimming class ( at 11.00 am in the morning) at Mackenzie High in Deep River swam on her own for a length of few feet. This gave her much satisfaction and happiness of accomplishment.

Also during dinner, both Sitara and Sachin got the taste of Gujarati papad  . While Sitara had tasted this  before, this  was the first time Sachin had eaten it. He liked it and ate the  papad with great satisfaction.

Wednesady 08 December 2010

Lately the kids are in routine growth mode and continue to visit  their nana/nani  on Thursdays and Sundays . They had “sleep over” on Thursday night (2 December 2010) as their parents were to go for a Christmas Party at Kelseys (Petawawa) . Both of them were fabulous. Sachin used the potty for his “single” need. Sitara enjoys her stay at her nana/nani – she takes part in many activities and have  her nana say stories. These days  -the stories are inpromptu as recited by her nana – based on subjects that she chooses. These days she wants stories of ” Rainbow that talked” or   ” the boat that talked ” or similar subjects. Her nana obliges very happily.

Sitara and of course Sachin – both helped decorate the Christmas tree at their nana/nani home on Thursday (02 Decmeber 2010) . Sitara was her usual self – all very mature and would help to put many ornaments on the tree (she had a choice- angels and snow flakes). Well, she likes few others -which she requested (very lovingly and mischivious smile on her face) to take home to Mackey to place on the tree there . This was allowed very readily and great joy.   Sachin was all excited. This is his first tree to decorate at his nana/nani home.   Both kids also had earlier (on Tuesday 30 November 2010) helped their mom to put up a Christmas tree at their home in Mackey. Their nani was also there to be with them.     Sachin would pick up an ornament and walk around the room and then come back to put ot on the tree – though for him it is difficult (being only 15 months old) – but he was assisted by his nana or nani .

On Saturday (04 December 2010) – all (Sunjay , kids and grandparents) went to Deep River downtown to watch the Santa parade starting at 5.30 pm  – all floats illuminated by multiple colorful lights – against the backdrop of dark sky.   Kids were excited. Nina was working that day but came out during the parade to be with the kids and family and to enjoy the parade .   Sitara had the best time . She and Sachin got lots of candies (goodies) etc from the float sponsors.   Sachin was all keen to observe the  parade but being only 15 months old -he took in all the noise and lights and just felt happy about it all.

 Thursday 09 December 2010

The kids and their mom spent the day at nana/nani home.   It was a great happy fun day with them. A board game “Candy Camp” was played with Sitara ( 3 played- Sitara, her mom and nana)   – Nana lost.   Sitara is very satiable girl. There is a ” candy cane ” pennant hung on the wall by her nani – for her to get one candy each day prior to Christmas but parental rule is that she cannot have a candy as too mush sugar is not good for kids – So she asks but she gets explanation that she cannot have it because sugar is not good – and she just accepts that happily – no fuss or any tantrums. She telss her nani in a very soft voice ” I understand “.

Ah! she also discovered all the   “wrapped up”  gifts   for Christmas – earlier hidden in the Master bedroom  – but only thing  she asked – is this for me? and her nana said yes – she then walked awy satisfied – no fuss for having one right away . Fpor   Thre (3) year old to be such satiated is a boon to the family. She has this trait sinc ethe day she was born. Always  logic and understanding .

This day Sachin was   a very happy playful kid. He played with his nana with his toys and also with his nani – going to kitchen and elsewhere – over the stairs and down – few times . He talks few words these days.     “Daddy”,   “Mommy”, “nana” – “Mamma ”   for Sitara – he says “Ta” and he tries to speak garbage but can come up with ” –age”.     He likes music and wanted to dance with his nana – so got the muscic going – and his nana pick him up and   dance.   He would insist that dance continues – so nana carried him and danced for as much long as he wanted.

Saturday 11 December 2010

Both kids came to Deep River with their mom and to spend time with their nana/nani and also for a “sleep over” as parents were to go out to an AECL office Christmas party – held in Petawawa. The parents were to spend the night (after the party) in Pembroke at their friend’s home.

During the day there was playing with the kids and also went out for a while in the snow. Could not make a snowman as the snow was all dry and would not make a ball.

They went to bed in good time and rested through the night peacefully.

On Sunday 12 December, after breakfast and  playing in the house for sometime , their nana took them outside in the snow . There was so much snow falling on this day and required snow shovelling a couple of times.   Sachin loved it. He got a ride on nana’s snow scoop and then to sit on the a pile of snow .   However it was discovered that he had Sitara’s snow shoes on – of course put on by his nana. He was taken into  the house and Sitara got her snow shoes and then she came out (Sachin remaining in the house with his nani) to play in the snow.   She played with snow – though could not make a ball or snowman as the snow was as yet dry and could not be rolled into a ball. Sitara had a ride in the “snow scoop” – her nana took her sliding  on the road and driveway.

In the evening Sitara went for her swim lesson with her parents – after dinner they all went home to Mackey.

Tuesday 14 December  2010

Both kids went with their parents to Ottawa ( in fullness of snow falling) – they went to celebrate their mom’s birthday   . In Ottawa they spent time at “Cosmic Adventure” – where kids had a ball of a time. They returned back to Mackey on Wednesdaty.

Thursday 16 December 2010

Both kids came to Deep River with their mom  – who has free time from work and  their dad had gone to work. In the evening, we all celebrated their mom’s birthday – their dad joining in after the work.

 Note:

Sitara has since  last few days has started writing alphabet letters suchas A and M   but  also words  by herself. She can write MOMMY, MAMA, NINA .This is the time when she makes cards (craft with her mommy and also with her nani) for her mom’s birthday and also for christmas for all (her dad, momj, nana/nani and mama/mami) – this gives her impetus and interest to write names and words.

Sachin is full of confidence and knows what he wants and can communicate (in his own baby way) – by grunts   – and by his choice words that he speaks.   He knows how to say “nooooooo”   and also mimic Sitara . He is developing vocabulary of few words but uses his trademark – sharp –  “Hunnnnn”  and pointing with his hand or finger what he wants. He likes to run around – fromliving room through kitchen and follows Sitara who joins in – mostly this is becomg a routine for both kids at about 7.00 p.m in the evening   – the guess is they become energised after dinner and want to play  with each other and show ioff abit to parents and grandparents.

Thursday 23 December 2010

This day Sachin had a cold and a slight fever .   They did come to Deep River with their mom – with a proviso that both grandparents wear face  masks so that they do not catch the ciold from Sachin. They did and Sachin was almost normal and played with no notice of the masks .   Sitara played well – went to Hill Park for tobagganing in the afternoon with her mom  . Her nana/nani became a bit busy with a visit from Ken – our friend’s son – who came to Deep River on vacation from his naval training in Noca Scotia – so they could not go to the Hill park with Sitara. However, Sachin was sleeping & thus both grandparents  would not have  gone. Ken brought gifts for Sitara ( a cuddlly stuffed white blood cell )  as well as for Sachin ( an inflatable toy for his room)- along with gifts for Jackie ( a scarf )  and myself (a pair of playing cards). In the evening their parents went  to Pembroke (with the maroon minivan)  to pick up their gasl generator (Hayoundai Brand) from Walmart. When in Pembroke, the parents picked up  2 tobbagons ( one for each kid) – on behalf of the grandparents.

On  previous  Saturday ( 18 December 2010), Sitara went to Petawawa for her music lesson  (with her dad – her mom was working on the day till 10 p.m.) – while Sachin spent time   with his nana/nani in Deep River. In the evening both kids went to a party -with their dad – to Roy’s house ( they have kids – Kevin & Ethane – who play with Sitara & Sachin) . Of course their mom joined them late after her     work finished at 10.00 pm .

Friday 24 December 2010

This day was quiet – till their nana picked up a   28″ snow blower (Craftsman type) from Sears depot at lunch time in Deep River – loaded it (with the help of Sunjay’s friend – Ken) on the maroon minivan ( along with the previous night’s Gas Generator) and the decided to take both of these to Mackey- Sunjay being at home this day   and looking after the kids.   Thier mom was working on this day (Christmas Eve) . So their nani also came and played with Sitara ( also read a book for alphabets) while Sachin was having his afternoon nap.   Thier dad & nana off-loaded both the equipment & their dad worked on these so they are ready for operation.

Saturday 25 December 2010

Its  “Santa” Day   (Christmas Day for the Christians) – when both nana/nani arrived at Mackey about 11.00 am –  the  Christmas  tree at the Mackey residence was respendent with lots of ornaments and lights. There were gifts galore underneath. The Santa had been very generous this year to kids and family. A family photo(s)  was taken prior to opening of the gifts .

Kids got variety of gifts from thier parents and grandparents.   But the top gifts were for Sitara – a bicycle (with training wheels) white all prettied up with a purse (pouch) for carrying refreshment  and a helmet -head gear- for safety. For Sachin – a blue truckmobile (run by feet power) with ” police ” motto on the side was there and ge just loved it and went in and out of it and showed off.

Sunday 26 December 2010

The kids came to deep River about noon with their dad. Their mom was working this day till 6.00 pm. After lunch – and after Sachin went to sleep for his afternoon nap – Sitara and her dad went out to Mount Martin Ski Hill in Deep River . Her nana joined in to watch Sitara enjoy herself. This is her first ski try   (I understand , that she had been earlier to the Mount Martin Hills before with her dad when she was a baby.)   She was excited and cooperated to wear the ski gears – without any complaints – even it could be uncomfortable.   She just seems to be out and about with her dad. She did try out one small hill (of course all guided and held by her dad) and wanted to try another  on the opposite side.   This “kind of” petered out but all in all it was all fun and fresh air and activities made  her very happy. She will eventually learn to ski but this is the first step when she becomes familiar with the gears and the hill.

In the evening the kids’ Sunirmama & Shannon mami arrived – driving – from Toronto. They were excited.   Sitara just latched up to her Shannonmami and Sachin was all happy though a bit sigh in the beginning .

Sitara played Candy Board game with her Mama /Mami   . Tomorrow they  will be going with them (& her parents) for tobagganning  .

Monday 27 December 2010

The kids came to Deep River -a tad bit later than expected -as Sachin slept longer in the morning – he is under-the-weather lately and has some cough and running nose. After lunch – gifts under the trees were opened – both kids got many things but mostly clothes and some toys . However Sachin went to sleep (his afternoon nap) so his gifts from his mama/mami were left over for later opening. All   adults also  exchanged gift with each other. Nana/nani were excited to note   that a donation of $101.00 was made to Deep River Hospital on their behalf by Sunir/Shannon.

This day we learnt a new word – relating to cocoa .   A mystery shrouded in much excitement and exhilaration.

After the gift opening, Sitara went to Hill Park in Deep River with her parents and mama/mami for tobagganing.   Sachin did not go as he was having his nap – and also he is a bit “under the weather”.

After dinner – celebration and fun – both kids played with their mama/mami much. Sunir just enjoyed playing  with Sitara – told her stories and read books. Sitara also played with her  ShannonMami and they mad merry fun for all of us.   They then went to Mackey with much reluctance – delayed going as much as they could.

Tuesday 28 December 2010

This day we were all invited to Mackey for a sumptuous “turkey ” dinner   – to celebrate the holidays. Sunjay prepared a fabulous turkey, filler and Nina prepared a   combo of vegetables . Nana/nani do not eat turkey – being vegetarian but the vegetables were supplemented by some dinner stuff brought from Deep River. Nina also prepared nana’s favourite custard pudding to be splashed over (by who ever wants it) the fruitcake earlier prepared by nani.

Sachin was asleep during the early supper time – but rest of the party enjoyed  and  sat at the well-appointed  table for dinner – being  enhanced  by a 2008 Pinot Gris wine goblet ready at the table.  Nins was just enjoyimg every minute at the table but did not eat much -as she was more playful. Her conversation bits are so much fun to listen to.

Later Sachin woke up but did not eat much as he   still was suffering from 101 degree temp and also cough but he as   usual was smiling type and played around without too much fuss for his cold and cough.     After dinner- Sitara and her Shannonmami worked on the “Ginger Bread”  house – a continuation from  the previous day  – when they started to decorate the   “Ginger Bread” house in Deep River. The decoaration was well done and Sitara was in heaven for doing this activity  especially with her Shannonmami .

Subsequently all went out in the front foyer to light up some sparklers – left over from prevous years’ Diwali celebration . Sitara enjoyed holding and swinging the sparklers  – playing with all but mainly with her Shannonmami   – running all   over in the snow covered front yard  . Sachin also came out but was rather a spectator as he was not in the mood to play due to his cold and cough.

After that both kids were encouraged to go to bed with a “”sing song ‘ and then led  to bed for sleep. Sitara got a special treat – her SunirMama read her a story book to bed.

Then adults played a Board game for about an hour before nana/nani and mama/mami went back to Deep River late in the night.

Thursday 30 December 2010

So they came and then they went back to Toronto yesterday. These are kids’ Sunirmama/Shannonmami . But on the way back to Toronto, they could not help but stop over in Mackey to say “Hullo” to kids before proceeding to Toronto. Sitara got all the hugs and attention as Sachin was still sleeping late (due to his cold and cough weakness).

Today Sitara came out to Deep River Arena for her skating lesson – her first . She came with her mom .   They did not come over to nana/nani home except to collect Sitara’s helmet – which is  kept in Deep River with other ski gears .

Friday 31 December 2010

This is the last day of the year 2010- both kids are under the weather – being looked after by their dad at home -when their mom was at work   in Deep River.

We pary for their and their parents’ Happy and enjoyable New Year.

                                                                                                                                                                                                          27 September 2010

Value for our Money
In life we   look for good value for the money we spend.   This is based not only on the minimum purchase price (economy) but also on the maximum efficiency and effectiveness of the purchase.

Ottawa spends more than it takes.  This results in annual deficit .   This deficit , we are told is due to stimulus spending to prop up our economy. This increases the debt load of the country. Deficit adds to debt, adds to debt, adds to debt.   The total Federal debt is around $543 billion and the annual budget deficit was close to $50 billion in 2009.

Whether we are getting the  ” value for our money” for this deficit spending is troubling to many – look at the billion plus dollars spent on G8 and G20 meetings a few months ago.

How will this deficit and debt will be reduced in the years to come? The   Feds will download debt on the provinces to show a surplus for themselves and then Provinces will download that to the Municipalities.   Remember the last time how the Municipalities were saddled with downloaded services when senior Governments wanted   to reduce their budgetary deficits.

In order to reduce the current annual deficit and national debt, the Municipalities will be left to fend for themselves with many extra services downloaded . This will result in increased Property taxes on the poor taxpayers and in addition many indirect taxes (user fees etc) and financial burden (like reduction in health care dollars for our hospital) will occur.

We in Deep River are already burdened with higher taxes compared to our neighbours (as reported by our 2010 Municipal Budget document).

When the country moves to reduce the current deficit and heavy debt burden , fasten your seat belt,   as we all will be called upon to pay more higher property taxes. This will aggravate the financial situations of many (including seniors ). Due to the recession and the economy not performing well, many seniors are losing their invested life savings and cannot quite recover due to doldrums in the market .Further the saving interests are practically nil.

Deep River has a window of opportunity to prepare for such an eventuality and to insulate its population from any adverse impact on property taxes (or the level of services provided) from such a scenario.   Remember it happened before !

We need to examine whether   we can and should   amalgamate with the Town of Laurentian Hills .   We are joined “at the hip” metaphorically   speaking – geographically and with intertwining family   ties . This will lead to better services with reduced cost for both the Municipalities and thus decrease in the property taxes .

We also need to seriously look at various services that we enjoy in our Town.   We are proud of the excellent services that we receive   but again it behoves on our elected leaders to really investigate the feasibility of any alternate and cost-effective mode/method of delivery of such services.

We need to assure ourselves that we are getting optimal value for our money.

Since my last posting in the NRT (on Deep River taxes) on 8th September 2010 , I have been flooded with many positive support from area residents.   Our present property taxes can be reduced substantially if we explore the alternate and also to do away with services which may not be proving useful.

Can we get the “value for our money” from our elected Councillors and representatives?   We need to hear from them before deciding on whom to elect.   I have observed  the inscription   “Value For Money” on election posters by one candidate, which is exciting. Hopefully this is followed through by the new Council.

We need a Council which is focused to obtain optimal value for our money – which may require   restructuring of the provision of some   Municipal services and also possibly the very structure of the Council.

Tuesday   7 September, 2010

Today, Sachin got a haircut.   Both his nani and Sitara went with him & his mom to witness his first haircut.

This is time when changes in season and general life begins. We are at the start of the fall (autumn) season in Ontario (Canada) .

There is change in our life is coming too. Sachin is now  1 year ( and a month and a half old) and ready to go to the baby sitter- as his mom will start working –  beginning from tomorrow (Wednesday, 8 September). He spent a couple of days last week at the baby sitter – to get acquainted with that life style .

Before this change clicks in fully, the kids were treated by their parents and went to Ottawa on Thursday ( 2 September) night (after stopping over at their nana/nani home in Deep River and sharing meals there).   This being the long weekend with Monday (6 September, 2010) as the Labour Day holiday – the parents could spend time away from home.

The kids went to museums (the Museum of Nature, Children’s Museum)  and other things (such as  going to  the market). Sitara was awed by dinosaurs and really enjoyed the visit – so did Sachen who kept playing on the electronic ABM machine.

Sachin has started walking a lot – though get down to crawling when confronted by some obstacles (real or imagined ones). He can now turn around while walking and always enjoys demonstrating that. He has a way of communicating – all smiling and polite – but does try to form words. He does repeat some sounds . He also has started playing with Lego type and “shape sorter” type toys and he likes  musical toys- radio and record player along with the truck full of musical tunes. He can get on the truck (a saddle type truck) and can manoeuvre himself on top and move to either side without help from the adults.

Well, tomorrow is a big day for him as he will be there whole day at the baby-sitter . Last two times when he was there to get acquainted – he was there only  for a couple of  hours each – in the forst time his mom also stayed there.   However, Sitara will also be there so he wont be with all strangers (kids). Ginette , their babysitter is vary pleasant baby-sitter and has her own two kids too. The young one is  a boy – slightly older than Sachin.

Best of luck! Sachin- this is your first milestone in your life   – a first transition change in his life and many to come. It will be a bit hard on his mom as she really enjoyed his 1st year growth along with Sitara – who is now 3 years and a month old.   There will be rush in the morning to get ready to get to baby-sitter in time – to allow  both mom and dad go to   their respective workplace in time.

Such is life.

Friday 10 September, 2010

Today Sachin went again full time at the baby-sitter. Last time  when he went to the  baby-sitter on Tuesday  7 September, 2010 – i was quite new for him to go to a baby-sitter for the full day and thus it  was new experience for him and it was difficult for him to adjust  . I understand he spent the day crying and not happy.

His experience for Friday, as I understand from his parents -was similar but slowly he is getting used to the new arrangements . He has started to play with other kids and the toys at the baby-sitter.
Saturday  11 September, 2010

This day Sitara went (in the morning) for her first music class at Petawawa with her dad.   Her mom was working and thus Sachin came and stayed with his nani in Deep River- while Sitara had gone for the music class.

After the music class -in the afternoon -Sitara (along with her dad) went to a Birthday party in Deep River. Sachin remained with his nani and was picked up by his mom (after she had finished her  work duty at about 6.00 p.m) .

His nani had time to play with Sachinh during the day (Saturday) . They went out in the yard to play in the fresh air. He surprised his nani today when he walked for long time without trying to crawl. He   went round and round from living room into the kitchen and then back to living room – for at least four (4) times without resting or sitting down or wanting to crawl.   Well, he is growing up.

Their nana was not home as he had gone (to attend the PEO Eastern Region Congress) to Brockville, Ontario on Friday afternoon and returned to-day at about  7.30 pm.

She enjoyed the class -according to her dad. The first session was just to become familiar with others who have joined the class and also with various musical instruments.

Thursday 16 September, 2010

This day teh kids were at the local FEN activity -located at Mackenzie High School in Deep River. They went with their mom   and their nani joined them. After that they came to nana/nani home to spend the day -as they normally spend time  on Thursday at their nana/nani home.

This day Sachin ventured into drinking normal cow milk in a “sippy” cup – which he did very well.

Sitara helped her nani in rolling chappatis for dinner. Boy!, she does roll the chappatis like a pro – all properly round and of  great proportion. After the chappatis were ready, she gave  one to each – her nana, nani, mom and dad for eating at the dinner time.

Sitara has a sense of humour – she calls her nani a few times ‘nan’ – a short version and then smiles.

Saturday 25 September 2010

Sachin spent the day with his nana/nani today in Deep River as  his mom  was working in the  week-end and Sitara was going  for music lesson (in Petawawa) with her dad.

Sachin remained a cool and calm boy (baby). He behaved well with no fuss at all. He had his lunch and dinner nicely and his nap well.   I understand from his mom that –  today he also did his first “potty” successfully.

We saw  a great advance in his eating habits. He eats his vegetable well and also likes  fruits but green grapes more.    He started to use spoon for putting food in his mouth. This is a start and thus he also eats with his fingers.

Sunday 26 September 2010

This day Sitara goes for swimming lesson in the evening (6.05 pm ) at Mackenzie High School (Deep River) swimming pool  .  Both nana/nani also went to the pool to be with the kids. Sachin is there just for fun (  poor fellow – what can he do – he just has to go where his parents go)    .

After the swimming lesson. all came home in Deep River and had dinner (home made pizza) and “faluda milkshake” . Ths day Sitara swam without floaters for a while – in company of the trainer.

There was a surprise waiting for the kids in the recreation room . So after dinner, all trooped to the rec room and  lo behold – a PlayHouse (with Star War motif) had been erected by nana for the kids. Their nani want to buy a tent for Sitara for some time – and this Playhouse (5 feet * 5 feet * 5 feet) was found in  a  Petawawa store on Saturday- after getteing up on Sunday , their nana went to work – reorganising the rec room and  erecting the PlayHouse.

Sitara was all excited and Sachin too. Each one kept going in and out for a while and then hauled most of their toys (those which are normally in the rec room) into the Playhouse. Sitara made tea (pretend) on the toy stove for her nana and kids and parents played around.   Invariably, nana was cajoled by Sitara to read a couple of books to her (Cinderella and Three Pigs) .   There always are books around for the kids -at few places in the house .

                                                                                                                                                                          4 September,2010
Budget Comparison of Local Municipalities
Further to my “Letter to Editor  titled ” New council must tackle high taxes”  published in the NRT of 28 July   2010, I have done a little bit  of reading / understanding and comparing the budgets of Deep River and adjoining Municipalities for the year 2010.  This may help our new council to get a glimpse of our tax burden as seen by a citizen of the Town.
I have attempted here to give some  data from this reading. The information is rather complex to understand and compare as each Municipality has its own unique needs .   However, one can almost feel that  Deep River citizens have been indulging in some Cadillac services for which we have to pay higher costs.
While Deep River has some   seven (7) elected Councillors (including the Mayor)   for a population of 4372 , Town of Petawawa has seven (7)   for a population of 15522 , Town of Laurentian Hills has five (5) for a population of 2936 and   Pembroke has nine (9) for a population of 14821.
The question which needs to be asked , does  Deep River need seven (7) elected Councillors for our small population ?
Two municipalities have full time Fire Departments –  Deep River and Pembroke – though Pembroke also has volunteer firemen in the Department team while Deep River does not. The Deep River Fire and Emergency Department has some ten (10)  full time  staff compared to Pembroke, which has 15 Full time staff augmented by   volunteers. The 2010 budget for Deep River Fire Department is   $1,085,453  which is some 15 percent (%) of total Deep River annual expenditure. This translates to some $242 per person residing in Deep River. The Pembroke Fire Department budget is $ 2,244,940 which is 8% of their total annual expenditure and works out to be $150 per Pembroke resident. Two Municipalities have volunteer Fire Departments . Town of Laurentian Hills has one (1) part-time Fire Chief and 39 volunteers and have annual budget of approximately   $ 260,000 (less than 5% of their total annual expenditure) for their Fire needs .This translates to $ 89 per person residing in the Township.  Petawawa runs its Fire Department with a volunteer Fire Chief and some 39 volunteer firemen and spends approximately $913,767 ( about 8% of its total   budget) annually on its fire needs    – which works out to be $ 59 per person.
Summary: Deep River spends 15% of its annual budget on its Fire and Emergency   needs – which is roughly double percentagewise than what is spent in Petawawa and Pembroke   and 3 times what is spent in the Town of Laurentian Hills.
Two Municipalities have full time Police Departments –   Deep River and Pembroke. Deep River has some ten (10) full time and one (1) part-time   staff while Pembroke has some 29 uniformed officers plus other staff ( I do not have numbers) . The 2010 budget for Deep River Police Department is   a total of   $1,453,231 (which is expected to reduce due to expected revenue income of some $367,778) – which translates to some 20% of total annual expenditure   and   works out to be approximately $330 per Deep River resident. The Pembroke Police Department 2010   budget is some $ 5,407,850 which is about 20% of their total annual expenditure and works out to be $365 per Pembroke resident.   Compared to these two municipalities, Town of Laurentian Hills is serviced under contract by Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) spends about $346,569 for their policing needs – which is about 6% of their total annual expenditure and works out to be $118 per resident   and Town of Petawawa has a budget of $1,633,139 for its policing needs which is serviced under contract by Ontario Provincial Police (OPP). Petawawa spends some 14% of their annual total expenditure on policing needs which works out to be $105 per Petawawa resident.
Summary: Deep River spends $330 per resident annually on police cost  which is slightly lower than Pembroke policing cost but is roughly three (3) times more than what is spent by Town of Laurentian Hills as well as by Petawawa.
If I read the budgets correctly, Deep River spends about $116 net per resident on recreation while Petawawa spends $68 per resident and Pembroke’s  net cost is only   $19 per resident.
Frankly reading and deciphering of budgets documents is a difficult task especially for a retired engineer like myself and there could be a possibility of errors or misunderstanding in the data collected   but the conclusions seem quite obvious.
The provision of the above services by the Municipalities leads to Deep River 2010  tax rate to  0.01027309   for residential property and   0.01864258 for Commercial. However, Petawawa   tax rate is 0.00276666 for residential property and   0.00502066 for commercial property. Thus Petawawa tax rate is much lower – 73 % lower compared to Deep River for both residential & commercial property.   Both Deep River and Petawawa enjoys “payment-in-lieu of taxes” – Town of   Deep River from AECL and Town of Petawawa from the Army base.
While Pembroke residential tax rate is 0.01648376 and commercial is 0.03319163. The tax rate is about 80% higher in Pembroke compared to Deep River for both residential & commercial property Town of Laurentian Hills tax rate is 0.00749441 for residential property and 0.01360011 for a commercial property.  Tax rate is some 27% lower in the Town of Laurentian Hills compared to Deep River.
Though Town of Laurentian Hills does not get much ” payment-in-lieu of taxes “, its tax rate is much lower than Deep River due to mode and style of services provided.
This comparison highlights different modes and styles of services each Municipality supplies according to the local needs and preferences of the citizens. It seems there is room for some changes especially in the delivery of fire and policing   services in Deep River – which could allow flexibility to lower the tax rate to at least what is in Petawawa.
At present time, Deep River has some 43 full time staff,  24 part-time staff and hire some 64 students over a year while Petawawa has 31 full time staff with some 28 casual staff (including students over a year) . The staffing in Deep River is a reflection of our full time departments.
Further, amalgamation of Town of Deep River & Town of Laurentian Hills could allow advantage of  ” scale of economy ” and reduce duplication of   administrative, equipment procurement and servicing , and other costs. It is known that many   people residing in either area are intertwined psychologically and  at many times geographically.
In the end, I would like to mention that having reviewed four (4) budget documents , I have found the Deep River Budget  relatively more   clear to understand (people friendly) and also more transparent   and frank.
I  believe that the Town is run quite professionally and efficiently within the parameters that both the Council and the Town Officers are faced with.
However, there is a need to look at a new way for delivery of services without compromising safety or efficiency. The new Council has an opportunity and responsibility to look at the tax burden and be bold enough to think re-structuring – which is not an easy task and will take determination and visionary approach with a good leadership from whoever is elected to be the mayor of the town.

The ” Liberal Express ”  and Nuclear Industry
It came and went. That is the ” Liberal Express ” by which the Federal Liberal leader   Michael Ignatieff   goes around the country to connect with the Canadians. The bus came on time on Monday 9 August 2010   to join the ‘Corn Roast” hosted  by Ms. Christine Tabbert , the local Liberal candidate for the upcoming (who knows when) Federal election, at her family farm in the area.
The day turned out to be bright and sunny – a change from previous cloudy and rainy couple of days.   The “bag pipe” along   with live band music kept all entertained . This brought lots of fun to some 500 people who attended the ‘Corn roast” and meet with the Federal Liberal leader, his charming wife and other Liberal bigwigs.
Connect he did . This was an excellent moment for Mike Ignatieff to   come close to the Canadian people – especially to see the farm in the area full of corn field and many Holstein cows . He talked about the rural folks and the divide between rural and urban Canada. He mentioned that the Liberal Party is developing a national food policy that will promote Canadian-grown produce.
The Federal leader did not say much about the nuclear industry in the area.
There were folks (who attended the “Corn Roast”)  who were keen to know what is the Liberal policy regarding the nuclear science and industry in Canada. They were a bit disappointed including myself.   This industry is pride of Canada – the industry which by its research and development over last many years   have brought medical breakthroughs (diagnostic isotopes etc),   electricity   generation , material   sciences etc. The industry supports some 30000 high quality   jobs in Canada – even when it is limping to survive.
The nuclear industry is at a cross-road in Canada   when there is a tremendous upsurge in the industry around the world . Our Canada is falling behind  and very badly.
So far what is happening is just posturing by various powers-to-be   . We have our local MP ( a conservative – a member of the ruling party) ) who seems always  collecting   ” petition”  ballots – but how long will this continue.   Really we do not need ballots from local   populace which is already sold to nuclear power – as the industry resides in local area and generate much economic development .
I do appreciate the effort but really I have not yet fathomed   the usefulness of this .The Conservative Party is in power since last few years and many independent studies have suggested the need for the revival of the nuclear science and technology in the country.
They can spend more than a billion dollars on security for G8/G20 summits but cannot invest in real asset like nuclear industry which will keep on giving . Why so much dilly-dallying? What   gives?
Even Liberal Party is taking time to come out with clear policy   when we need some morale boosting in the industry.   It is a no-brainer but it seems all are just posturing and seem lost.   Is the Nuclear Industry such a complicated industry?   Why  the powers-to-be cannot understand the intricacies, nuances and  usefulness of its many researches and knowledge for the security and well-being of the country.
Has the nuclear industry failed to bring to light many success stories and much contribution to Canadians? The nuclear regulations and care that goes behind the operation of the industry is   world renowned .
I hope that the ” Liberal Express ” bus which recently brought the Federal Liberal leader (Michael Ignatieff) to our area has become instrumental in igniting the Canadian leadership to the plight and sorry state of nuclear industry in Canada and would jog him   to take bold step and make decisive policy statement for the revival of the industry.  Otherwise for us the ‘ Liberal Express ”   will remain as ” it came and went”.

Saturday 31 July 2010

Today, the kids and parents came to Deep River – as there is festival going on in Deep River –   Summerfest 2010. Both kids enjoyed the visit. Sitara went with her nana  to town parks and played with kiddie gym. Also threw some stones in the Ottawa River making ripples in the river(at  Lighthouse location) .

Sachin also went to  the town parks ( separately) with his nana and mom. He enjoyed being on the swings.

Today Sachin spoke words for food -” mum ” ” mum “.

He also started to climb down on the stairs – he climbs the stairs since some time now.

The kids and parents along with grandparents went to the Deep River Campus -initially in the afternoon when  the local East Indian group presented a program on the Main Stage – first a   Kathakali dance by two sisters (Asha & Rupa) and then a show of various ways sarees are worn in different States in India – kids’ mom and nani presented the Gujarati way of wearing a saree – nani showing the traditional saree and mom  showing the latest fashion . Kids’ dad also  participated showcasing the Indian “Sarwani”  suit for a  male.

After this  program, the parents & nani (along with  Sachin) went home to change – and to feed Sachin and also for his afternoon nap.   Sitara remained with her nana on the grounds -as this was her chance to enjoy various programs for the kids.   Sitara being a 3-year old could participate in a few of these. She went and enjoyed/experienced the two (2) airbounces. She bounced on an inflated “King’s Castle bouncer”   and also crawled, squeezed, climbed and jumped through the inflatable obstacle course called ‘Urban Assault”. After that she (along with her nana) went on a “Giant Tiger” train – accompanied by a “Tiger” ( a man in Tiger costume)  and enjoyed the wonderful view of the Ottawa river .   After that she was tired and thus her dad was called on cellphone – he picked up her and her nana and all went home – where Sitara went to have a nap.

Later in the evening of Saturday (about 9.30 p.m)  they all went to the Campus to watch fireworks at the bank of Ottawa River. This year was  a spectacular fireworks  and kids enjoyed it. Even Sachin (only 1 year) old really enjoyed and was entranced by the fireworks. Of course their ears were covered up  -to protect from high noise & sound  .   The fireworks were watched from a close spot .

After the fireworks, the kids also remained with parents to enjoy the concerts on the stage. This is their first concert (by local artists )which they have  attended in their young life.

Sunday 01 August 2010

The kids and parents came to Deep River and spent the day. It was a bit cloudy day and thsu most activities with the kids were in the house. Sachin, as usual played around – he is a very contented kid and plays with his toys – whichever is avialable. Thoug he can stand up – he is shy of walking and thus does crawl to go places.

Sitara enjoys time with her nana – watching on the Computer (You Tube) with him the  video clips of Little Mermaid (with the bad witch Ursula and princess Malody).   There are some 7 video clips for covering the full story of “Return to the Sea”.   Sitara enjoys this very much.

In the evening they both went to sleep – and thus the parents  were able to go to the Deep River Campus (after 9.30 p.m) for Summerfest fetivities – to mostly watch/listen to K’Naan , the Canadian Somali singer.  The grandparents also went – one at a  time -as the other stayed home to keep a watch for the kids.    So both managed to enjoy K’Naan’s songs . The parents came home after the concert was finished and stayed the night  in Deep River.

This is the day Sachin was introduced to “sippy cup” for his water drink. He liked it.

The kids and parents went to their home to Mackey next day (on Monday 02 August 2010) after lunch.  The Summerfest in Deep River is now over.

Thursday 5 August 2010

Hey, Sitara -Happy Birthday to our lovely granddaughter – she is now 3 years old.

Both nana/nani went to Mackey in the evening to celebrate her birthday. Everyone had a great time. It was a close family affair -both nana/nani & parents.   Sachin’s birthday (1 year on 20 July) was also celebrated once again . Both kids got lots of gifts and love. Sitara just loved it and sachin was as usual palyful. He enjoyed the “helicopter” toy from nana/nani.  Sitara got lots of books along with a couple of dolls . Nana had to read about 3 books – Alladin, Bambi and  Lion King ( not quite – the third one was partially  read)  .   Nana has also written a short poem for her 3rd birthday -which was read . The poem is separately published on the Blog.

After they (the kids) went back to sleep at about 9.00 p.m – the parents were busy preparing decorations for the Saturday party. Both nana/nani remained to help out till mid-night and then returned to Deep River.

Her big party with all her friends (and their parents) is on the coming Saturday on 7th August. A  pool party (they have a good “kidney shape” pool in the backyard) but definitely a theme party with – the theme being the Little Mermaid – Ursula (the bad witch) getting the prominence.

Saturday 7 August 2010

Sitara -Happy Birthday to the party girl . I guess so far you (as well as Sachin) have  more than 5  different occasions to celebrate your birthdays (in Canada &  UK combined) – Sitara’s 3rd and Sachin’s 1st.

But this Saturday party was unique and the best. It was celebrated with Sitara’s friends and their parents – though all of them  also knew Sachin and wished him also a “Happy Birthday.     Some of them have babies Sachin’s age  and thus in future they will be around and playing together.

Both SunirMama and ShannonMami also came from Toronto to join in the celebration.

The theme of the party   was the Little Mermaid with Ursula ( the bad witch) getting the most exposure.  There were water stations ( small pool, playstation as well as the main swimming pool and Hot tub) around for everyone to play with water as the mermaid do live in water. The kids had great time ion the pool with one of their parents. Sachin was taken in the pool by his nana . He also played in the small pool for a while.

Prior to going into the pool , the kids along with parents played the “Treasure Hunt” game with going to various stations – likes Ursula’s Garden, Sebastian HotPot, Ariel’s Grotto, Flotsam’s and Jetsam’s Gym & Flounder’sPlayground –  as titles to each station and filling in alphabet letters onto a piece of paper (given) and find out what word is found .   FISH was the word – and all those who got is could get three gifts from a Treasure Box. Of course all kids got get the three (3) gifts.

The Lunch was Hotdogs – with Ursula type cutting and shaping of the hot dogs along with salad, watermelon pieces, grapes ,and cantoploupe pieces – and of course fruit drinks . There were two cakes- one for Sitara – baked by Valumart with Little Mermaid theme – with small statues of Ursula and other characters.     The other one was for sachin – baked by his mom – again with Little Marmaid as the theme with statute of few characters. Thus cake was special chocolet type without any use of eggs – to  allow kids  with allergies to enjoy the party.   Also a “sea theme ”  jello (light blueish green color) in a large bowl was made with all types of fish and sea creatures ( all eatables)   in it. Kids enjoyed this.

After the party was over, when all guests left, the family spent the aftrenoon in the pool and hot tub with the kids and had lots of fun, Sitara enjoyed playing with her favourite mami – Shannon   and at times played with her Mama (Sunir) also . She is so relaxed with them that it bring all the  fun in watching them. Sachin also had great time with his Mama and Mami. Of course, they also played with grandparents too and  their parents who took care of them for food and baths etc.

The garndparents and Mama/Mami came home (to Deep River) late in   the evening about mid-night. A long but an enjoyable day.

Sunday 8 August 2010

The grandparents and Mama/Mami went to Mackey in the afternoon to play with the kids – on the way they stopped over at Laurentian dairy and had icecream before heading off to Mackey.

The kids had a marvellous time. No one went into the pool as it was rainy day   and a bit cool.   But Sunir and Shannon went  outdoors – joined by nani and lo behold they got lots of wild black berries – which was enjoyed by everyone.   There is so much fruit (berries) in the yard and along the road.

The dinner was special – Nina put it together with noodles and stir fry and curried tofu fingers.

The play with kids was excellent – Mami reading books to Sitara , Sunir playing with Sachin and also with Sitara –  opening baby dolls that she got as birthday presents.

All came home (to Deep River) after Sachin abd Sitara went to sleep – though Sitara got apspecvial treat – a book reading by her ShannonMami.

 Monday 9 August 2010

The kids came to Deep River with their mom to play with  their Mama/Mami who are here in Deep River until Tuesday – after that they are going camping in the Algonquin park .

The morning was spent playing and enjoying   each other company . Sitara played puzzles with her Mama while Sachin spent time with his Mami . Then at lunch time  all went out for a picnic at the Marina in Deep River .     After the picnic, the kids went to sleep in the afternoon while Sunir/Shannon went  for a walk on the Riverbank   (newly built promenade along the Ottwa River passing thru Deep River).

In th evening all went to a “Corn Roast” organised by the local candidate for the Liberal party ( Christine Tabbert ) at her  family’s farm on Forest Lea Road, Pembroke in honour of the Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff – whose “bus caravan” was visiting the Renfrew County.

The kids were cajoled and kissed by the politicians – Zsuzsanna Zsohar (Mike Ignatieff’s wife) really liked Sitara and spent good time with her. Sachin was cajoled and held by Mike and others too.

Michael Ignatieff (sitting)- Federal Liberal leader  and Christine Tabbert (standing) – local liberal candidate for the coming (who knows when) federal election.   Sachin in his stroller besides Sitara in her stroller.  Nina & Sunjay standing besides the strollers .  Shannon & Sunir are in the far background – Shannon in green T-shirt and Sunir next to her –  in glasses and brownish T-shirt.   There is Theresa & Peter – standing behind Christine on the photo.

The picnic was very entertaining with Hot Dogs, corns  with salad on the side etc. The beverage was water bottles only  .   The  dessert at the end was vanilla ice cream.

The kids had a ball of a time with their Mama/Mami – and danced and played with them on the field – with the accompaniment of live music.   The “Corn Roast” ended at 8.00 pm and the Liberal bus went back to Ottawa .

After the “Corn Roast”, the kids went with their parents to Pembroke for shopping etc   and the  rest of the party (Mama/Mami & Nana/Nani) went to Peter/Teresa’s home for tea and social. Peter/Teresa also had come to the “Corn Roast and they live not very far from the Christine family’s farm.

Tuesday 10 August 2010

Today, Kids came to Deep River with their mom -as they had yearly medical check-up . Sachin got his vaccination ( injection on both arms) .

After lunch, the kids were taken by their mom to the “Shriner’s Circus” in Petawawa. Both Sachin & Sitara enjoyed the circus. They  went with a group of moms (from Deep River- all who normally meet with each other at various kids programs) with kids  .

After the Circus , they came back to Deep River and joined their dad – all had dinner at nana/nani home and after that   they went to Mackey – after a bit of play and socialising.

Monday 16 August 2010

The kids have not been to Deep River since last few days but we heard (on   phone from his mom)that Sachin on Sunday 15 August 2010- when alone in the living room in Mackey – stood up and walked a few steps on his own. So now slowly the crawling will end and walking will start – though it still may take a couple of weeks for the complete transformation.

Sitara has started to go back to her “babysitter” – though today she threw up when taken there in the morning by her dad. Her dad took her back home to Mackey   – distance of 25 minutes of drive. Sitara is slowly getting back to routine after a strenuous trip to UK – for six weeks and before that to US = for two weeks.

 Tuesday 17 August 2010

Both kids went with their mom to FEN classes at Pt. Alexander Library  – starting at 10.00 am. Both Nana& nani also went from Deep River to join them.   It was fun and both kids played along with other kids at the FEN room .

After that they came to Deep River and spent their time  at their nana/nani home. Their dad also joined for dinner . Sachin  have started taking  to walking more. This day, with nana in the living room – he took about 12 steps towards his mom and later walked from his dad   (on one sofa   – a long one) to his mom (on another  sofa – a short one –  a love seat ).

Also this day, Sachin ate strawberry (from a bottle commercially prepared for the babies) for the first time.

Saturday 21 August, 2010

Today we were invited to go to Mackey in the afternoon to meet Nina/Sunjay friends from Toronto (Brampton) – Anil & Shauna with their son Aditi   ( Aditi is about 3 years old –   a couple of months younger than Sitara). We also met Rajesh – who has recently come to the area to work at the Atomic Energy site.

Sitara was playing alone as Aditi was taken for a ride in car to Deep River – so that he can catch up on his sleep . Nana read a book (on aliens) to her and the she also went to have her afternoon nap.

This was necessary as she was up playing anf getting bored and her time for nap was due.

Sachin got up from his sleep (afternoon nap) – just after his nana/nani arrived to Mackey.  He played and enjoyed with both nana/nani . He has started to show his liking of a particular toy and pointing to it and saying “that” . This is good – now he has started using one or two words for his communication.

Friday 27 August 2010

This day the kids’ parents are travelling to Toronto – to celebrate their wedding anniversary and attend  a couple of social events. So both grandchildren (Sitara & Sachin) are to spend three (3) nights with their nana/nani in Deep River – and be with their parents on Monday – sometime in the   evening.

Sitara  was at her baby-sitter’s and was picked up by her nana at 5.00 p.m – she did not see her parents leave for Toronto. After dinner, her nana took her to the Deep River Public library at 7.00 p.m ( she was promised  – to borrow some children books ) but the library was closed – so her nana took her to the marina – to play there at the children’s gym and also to throw pebbles in the Ottawa River – she likes that – to see ripples  on the water surface.

On Saturday, the kids were taken to the beach in the afternoon. They really enjoyed that -as the sun was out but not too hot and  it was a slightly breezy day.     Sachin has  started to understand to play with the Shape Sorter toy ( a Fisher Price Toy –  which his mom used to play when she was a baby and also his Sunir Uncle when he was a baby)  and also with other toys too. He is very  active – no crying but smiles on his face – and he plays with all the toys   equally well and interest.

Sunday 29 August 2010

It was warm/hot day.   The kids stayed in the house during the morning but after their nap in   the afternoon,  it  was decided  to go out for picnic at the Deep River marina – there is a kid gym there as well as  there is a  gazibo for picnic.   Both Sachin and Sitara played at the kids gym – sliding and other items. Then nani started a feed for Sachin and Sitara and her nana went to the river shore . She wanted to creat ripples in the river – by throwing pebbles . A lady came along and said it is better to throw pieces of bread -as there were geese in the river and they would like that. She had spare scones – which she gave to Sitara . Sitara enjoyed offering bread (scone) pieces to the geese . Oh! then seagulls started to come and take away the scone pieces and poor geese would just remain without one. Sitara – in her well modulated voice – kept telling the seagulls ‘Go Away! Go Away!   Sitara had a great time feeding the flock of geese and see the flutter in the water .

In the meantine Sachin   got fed at the gazibo.   After sometime , both Sitara and her nana came to the gazibo to partake in the picnic.   After the picnic – the kids had   a couple of slides at the gym before returning to home.

They slept well duirng the night . On Monday, their mom came ( the parents had already returned to Mackey from Toronto on Sunday night) in the morning a sSitara was to go to her baby-sitters place.

Sachin also went to the baby-sitter’s place this day . His first (of many to come as he is growing up and his mom is to start her professional work in about 10 days) . Sachin spent about 2 hours at the baby-sitter – and his mom also stayed there – for his first day.   He enjoyed playing with other kids there.

In the evening, Sitara was picked up from the baby-sitter’s place by her mom   and all had dinner at nana/nani place – where their dad also joined in after his work.

Poem- Happy Birthday, SachinMan

 Tuesday 20 July, 2010

Our grandson, Sachin,  became 1yr. old today   He along with his sister , Sitara, and his parents are presently on a visit to England . He &  Sitara are enjoying the company of their  grandma (Maternal ) and their dad’s sister , brother-in- law and Yashmin (their cousin sister) .

I have written a small poem to celebrate his birthday . Here it is:

                                      SachinMan    ( 20 July   2010 )

Your mischievous smile and twinkle in the eyes
Do win hearts every moment

Your satiated demeanour and contented yawn
Brings joy and happiness to our hearts

Your crawling and  standing up to “cruise” along a sofa
Bring delight to our hearts

Every week of your growth in mental and motor skills
Fills   our hearts with delight

you do   recognise and play with your own toys
This cheers  your sister Sitara to no end

Now that you are 1 yr old ,   a very HAPPY BIRTHDAY
From   the bottom of our collective hearts

Our SachinMan our linkage to future along with Sitara
We wish you many years of joy and success.

nana , nani and the whole family

                                                                                                                                                                                        18 July 2010
                                                                                              Deep River taxes.
I think it is time that we   pose for the moment and think about where Deep River is going in the future or where we want it to be.
There is a need for growth.   Every once in a while one finds letters in our local newspaper calling for development of residences for newcomers and seniors in the town.   High taxes are becoming a deterrence for such development and also for opening of new businesses.
It is a common knowledge that the Deep River Municipal taxes are high compared to many other municipalities. This is in spite of getting a substantial sum of money as grant-in-lieu (of Property Taxes) from AECL.
Further , the Deep River tax rate also has increased progressively over the years .
As the Municipal elections are getting closer, many candidates are coming forward to serve the community.   This is good and we are very grateful.   However, we need the leadership which can transform radically the operation of the Municipality so that the high taxes that we are burdened with can be reduced drastically.
We need tax reduction in our Municipal taxes – let us say by 50% . Is it doable?  Yes, but of course, it is a suggestion (my dream!) at the moment.  I am sure a detailed study by an expert group may come up with a way to reduce the tax burden.
The total annual income of Deep River Municipality is about   $7 million of which the share of Municipal taxes is about   $2.8 million   ( 40 % of total) . The rest is from AECL grant-in-lieu, user fees and OMPF grants.   Assume that our Municipal taxes are reduced by say 50% ( that comes to $1.4 million)   – then the total income for the Municipality will reduce to $5.6 million – which is 80% of the present total income.
How can the reduction be made possible ? There are areas where our expenditures are more concentrated. These are
1)   Fire Dept
2)   Police Dept
We are thankful for our dedicated Fire Department and Police Department. Each and every member of these Departments have served in the past and are presently serving the community with utmost professionalism and dedication.
So what I suggest here is no reflection on their service and dedication. It is an abstract suggestion for an expert group to study in detail.
Between the two services (Fire Dept. and Police Dept.), we spend over $2 million annually.
The question is not that we do or do not need a fire department and also a Police Dept.   We need both .   But the structure of these need a review. Can a Fire Dept be volunteer based department or better – a hybrid – with a couple of full time officers and then the rest complement is made of volunteers. Similarly can the Policing need of the community be fulfilled by a hybrid organisation   – with a couple of   full time Deep River police officers with   OPP providing whatever back-up services necessary.   If this sort of organisational set-up is feasible – then the cost of these services   can be reduced substantially.   We need to look at our neighbouring Municipality –   the Town of Laurentian Hills – and its provision of Fire fighting and policing requirements and costs thereto.
There are other areas where costs can be reviewed.
For example, currently we have weekly garbage collection while we have Blue Box collection done at every two weeks interval. Our experience says that our Blue Box contents is three to four times more than our regular garbage – so our regular garbage every week is small (compared to our Blue Box content)  and can easily be collected every two weeks.
There are other areas of saving . For example, the large Municipality building would be incurring substantial electricity costs for heating and cooling . Would not a geothermal heating/cooling be   feasible to be installed ?   Geothermal heating systems work in a very unique way to naturally provide a heat source to a building. Not only can geothermal heating systems provide heat to a building, but it can actually cool it as well. Many people in the area are installing these.   Recently, Deep River is digging for road work and installing of new water and sewer lines – not much far from the Municipal building and thus there was an opportunity to install this geothermal system at  a reduced cost – a cost which can be recovered from savings in Electricity cost over a few years. On top of that we would have contributed to the “green” way of living.
We also need to visit the organisational structure of the Municipality itself. For example, can we not amalgamate with the neighbouring Municipalities especially the Town of Laurentian Hills. Do the Council need to meet every two weeks   – why not once   a month . This saves money, time and lots of paper work for minutes and other records.   Do we need the   Economic Development Department ?
We are fortunate to have excellent Council at present. Also our past Councils have provided a sterling service to the Community and I am very grateful for   their (and our Municipal officers’ ) service and devotion within the mandate that they were given.
As the Municipal elections are coming closer,   I am taking this opportunity to express   my angst at high taxes (both residential and for businesses) and see a possibility to reduce these if   bold initiatives are taken. I hope that the new Council will look deeply as to the way our Municipality is structured (both internally and externally)  and the way services are provided.   We need a mayoral candidate who can provide a visionary leadership who is not afraid of reviewing the established organisation and then bringing the results to the public.
These are changing times and to attract more people to Deep River , we need to be concerned about the high tax base  ( which may influence not to move here ) compared to our neighbouring Municipalities.

 Wednesday (19 May 2010)

At the beach on Wednesday, both kids just enjoyed the outdoors and romping in the sand and at the river shore. The picnic went well- both kids ate their meal – Sachin – his usual baby food and Sitara ate sandwiches and potato crisps.   The beach was very relaxing and kids and parents went home to Mackey at about 7.30 p.m. The interesting part of the picnic at the beach was that Sitara’s BabySitter (whom she calls “mumma” ) and her kids (along with father) also came to the beach this day. So Sitara had company of the kids she plays during the day. Jacob (the boy) is about Sitara’s age and the girl is 13 months old .

Now that Sachin is 10 months old -he speaks a few baby words   -like “da da” or “na   na” and always tries to form words to communicate. He is crawling well and goes around on his own steam – though he is very selective where to go. He also likes to walk – of course held by fingers by his mom or dad.

Sitara likes to play hide and seek but now added a new twist – she likes to create  a tent and hide there. In this activity she was helped by her nani on Tuesday (18 may) and also on Wednesday when she was at her nana/nani home.

 Thursday 20 May 2010

This is the day when Sachin becomes 10 months old. He is growing up – always oozing joy and playfulness   .

Yesterday, it was bright and hot day -so his parents thought of going to the beach  – in Deep River. We all trundled (drove) up to Pine Point beach. This beach is one of the two in Deep River. Sitara had slept over at her nana/nani home on Tuesday (18 May) night and then spent the whole day on Wednesday (19 May) at her BabySitter. In the evening , she was picked up from her BabySitter by her nana/nani and then she came home to get ready to go to the beach. The kids and their parents had also spent the whole of Tuesday at grandparents in Deep River. Sitara had a great time at the children park on the Heritage Road / Sylvie Road. She played with pulley and hauled up sand in the basket and then spread the sand back to the ground either directly or through a small chute provided   for that activity.

Monday 24 May 2010

What a day! It was Victoria Day holiday in Canada. The grandparents were invited to Mackey to enjoy the kids and also the barbeque (a vegetarian one) . After the grandparents arrived in Mackey – at about 10.30 a.m   – Sitara came running to the door to welcome them – she was getting ready for the   outdoor hot tub. Sachin was with his dad but also gave welcoming smile. He was very happy to see his nana/nani.

The day was warm but a bit cloudy at that time – which was superb to get into the hot tub – shade as well as  the warm water. Both grandparents changed into the swimware and all went into the hot tub. Both kids had splashing time -so did nana/nani and their parents .

After the tub splashing fun – all got ready after the bath/shower and then played outdoors – though dad was busy getting the barbeque going and mom was indoors preparing meals for the kids and also some potato fries for the barbeque. Sachin got fed by his mom when Sitara was having ball of a time with her nana & nani -outdoors – swing set and slide and general runing around.

After the barbeque lunch , Nina & her mom were in the garden – pruning the area where some vegetables were planted . Sitara was helping and Sachin was indoors with his dad and/or grandpa. Sitara enjoyed pruning trees -removing some dead flowers.

Then both kids went for their nap and the adults played cards (whist & a game called “65”).

After the kids finished their nap, again all went outdoors to play. Sitara likes outdoors and again helped  in the garden.

The dinner was good – simple but healthy. Oh Sitara – what a tremendous entertainment you surprised us with. You played the harmonica (mouth organ  – some   3″ long)   so beautifully – all musical and well tuned. Her nani was impressed with her playing the harmonica with a soothing high and low notes as if she understands the music. She plays the  harmonica for herself and not to impress anyone in the room -and that was the most enjoyable part. This has added her repertoire of musical performance -as noted earlier that she composed  a few songs by herself.

Sitara, your harmonica (mouth organ) expertise is something new that we were surprised. This must be   a natural gift as no one has taught you that before.

Not only she played the mouth organ but then organised an orchestra -asking her nani to play with her ” the musical shaker” and then enticing her nana to dance. Her nana danced with Sachin in his hands . When Sachin was put on the floor – he wanted to dance and was in ecstasy  to try to dance.

Sachin did something this evening that is also very heartwarming . Oh he does say “na na” and “da da” and “ta ta”. He has exhibited a good comprehension that when his mom asked him to “SAY  something” he understands and tries to repeat that word -more over with a twinkle in his eyes and a smile on his face.  Making it look like enjoyable and easy task.

And then ,Nina   encouraged  him to stand up – by holding the sofa edge.  He understood what his mom was asking him to do – he held the sofa edge and tried to stand up. It took a few tries but then -wow- he stood up – like a mountaineer.  Then he repeated the same as enticed by his mom and the whole audience (comprised of his nana/nani,dad & his sister ) in the room . His determination and fortitude with a smile became very joyful to all the spectators in the room .

This was  a  momentous evening for all of us – first Sitara exhibiting her talent for  playing harmonica and then  Sachin    standing up on his own -though  holding the sofa edge.

Sitara is just 2 1/2 + years old and Sachin is 10 months old at this time.

Saturday 29 May 2010

Sachin (first) and Sitara – went to Ottawa to attend a Greek wedding (Steve – Nina’s   pharmacist colleague ) – went on Saturday 29 May 2010   – in nana’s minivan . Came back on Sunday evening.

Nana/nani were away in Picton to attend an Engineering (Eastern Region Congress) at Ishiaha Tubbs Resort (28/29 May 2010)

Sachin also has a  third tooth (an upper one  sprouting this past week).

Sunday 30 May 2010.

Sachin/Sitara’s Sarlanani (their nana’s sister) and her husband Satish came visiting to Deep River –  their nana/nani picked them up from Toronto (at their son Sunit/Shilu home)  on their way back from Picton -on Sunday 30 May 2010.

Sachin & Sitara came with their parents on Monday to dinner -so that they can meet Sarlanani and Satishnana. We all had a great time together. Initially kids were shy but slowly they warmed up to the Kenyan relatives.  On Tuesday , nana/nani went to Eganville to take the visitors to see the Bonnachere Caves -the kids & their parents remained at Mackey for the day – as the parents are on a major decorating binge on the house (internal) with painting and removing trims etc. Also to have special decorative doors to be placed for Sitara’s as well as Sachin’s room (replacing the old doors).

Tuesday 1 June 2010

In the evening (Tuesday) , the Kenyan relatives were invited to Mackey for a barbeque (of course along with kid’s nana/nani) . Sitara started calling her nana’s sister (Sarla) as the “other nani” and Satish as the “other nana”.   Also they were also called “No Tea nani – sort rhyme with naughty  (playful)  and “no tea”  nana – again rhyme with naughty  (playful)  —- since Sarlanani does not like tea   – besides she is very pleasant and playful  .

So after barbeque, the kids played with all the adults (whoever each on of them  get hold of – or – whoever get hold of each of them)  – Sachin started showing his skill for standing up (albeit holding the edge of sofa) but then today he started to walk along the edge of the sofa -holding the sofa. He was just happy and showed his joyfulness by making grunt and other     sounds. His Shannonmami says the medical term is that he is “cruising” – that is he is walking along the edge of the sofa.

Late at night, about 10.00 p.m   – Sitara went with her nana/nani to go to Deep River (for a sleep over) – and also the visitors returned with them.

Sitara made her nani to read  a book -then by  her ”  other nani ” -which followed by her nana . She wanted to have her “other nana” to read   a book too but her nana prevailed and switched off the lights of her room at 11.00 p.m.   She was sound asleep within a minute.

 Wednesday 2 June 2010

On Wednesday, Sachin and her mom came from Mackey to spend time with the visitors from Kenya . Sitara was already here. Nina wanted to spend time at the beach – but unfortunately it was drizzling and cold. So Sitara & her mom spent time at her mom’s friends place along Ottawa River (indoors) -so Sitara got to play with young children . After lunch, Sitara & Sachin went to bed for their afternoon nap   – at that time Nina took her Sarlafaiba & Satishfuva to the Canadian Clock Museum situated in Deep River – the only one in Canada .-

Sitara stayed again (sleep over) at her nana/nani place in Deep River.

 Thursday 3 June 2010

In the morning of Thursday (3 June) , she had a good conversation with her “other nani’ at the breakfast table  – she would not let her nani to interject any conversation. After she was dropped off to her  BabySitter, her nana/nani drove to Toronto to drop off her  “other nana/nani ” (Sarla &  Satish).

In Toronto, first they were  invited for dinner at Sunir/Shannon’s home   and then go to Sunit/Shilu (their son & daughter-in-law) place. Both Sunit & Shilu joined in the dinner (though they came a bit late as they had to keep their store open to keep time)

Note: After Sitara’s nana/nani returned back in Deep River (on Friday 4 June), they heard from Nina (Sitara’s mom) that Sitara has developed a   rash. Apparently she reacts to jello (red colour)  – which she had consumed earlier at her nana/nani home. So my dear- she will not get jello for some time   – I guess, until she becomes 5 year old.

 Saturday 5 June 2010

Sitara & Sachin spent the evening with their nana/nani on Saturday 5 June 2010 – when their parents went to a party in Deep River that evening. This is the first time both kids were with their nana/nani without their parents – of course both kids were put to sleep before their parents went for the party. The parents also spent the night in Deep River as it was late when they came from the party . Sunday was spent with kids – especially in the morning . It was a bit overcast – so only Sitara went to a nearby park (at the marina with lighthouse) with her  nana . In the afternoon, the kids went with their parents to another party in Deep River – but Sitara came back to her nana/nani home at about 4.00 pm to have a sleep over . She is always a doll and loving child.

On Monday (7 June), her nana/nani took her to a nearby park (on Laurier Road) with swings – but it started to rain a bit -so the park visit was shortened . She then went to the Deep River Library . Her nani read her two children books and her nana one (all chosen by her). Then after going to the Post Office, all came home via Burger King outlet (where some French Fries were bought) . Sitara was later joined by her parents & Sachin who had dinner at Deep River. Sitara’s parents are busy these days  for renovation (drywall & Ceiling  repairs as well as  painting)    by a contractor – and thus are happy that Sitara wants to have sleep over at her garndparents. She  enjoys that  and wants to stay more .

Sitara gave a purple peoni(rose) flower to her mom when she came to Deep River on Monday ( 7 June) evening – she picked the   peoni from her nana/nani garden. Sitara likes to call out “peoni” in her musical tone.

Sachin is having his fourth tooth sprouting – second  upper one .

Now that  she is more self confident and knows few worldly things – Sitara says very interesting things – all of these cannot be written as it is difficult to remember all that she says -as we do not jot that at the time when it is spoken. However, her mom has captured a couple of these – said in last few days

Friday 18 June 2010

This is a momentous day as both Sitara and Sachin flew with their parents to UK to visit their Grandma (paternal) and Sunjay’s sister and her family – along with other relatives from both sides. This is first visit of Sachin to UK (particularly to Rugby to be with his Grandma). This is Sitara’s second time to UK and she is a “pro” for relationship. She will charm all her relatives from both sides with her sweet and mature talk and conversation. Sachin will also charm all with his smile and laughter as well as learning to walk and talk. Their nana/nani drop the family to the Ottawa airport in their chrysler maroon minivan.

Both slept thru the flight but when they arrived/landed at the Heathrow Airport on Saturday (19 July) morning, the  car (which their parents had booked previously from Canada) was not ready and thus had  to spend a couple of hours waiting.   They arrived at Rugby ( their Grandma’s home) a bit late in the afternoon.   As we understood on the phone , Sitara was under the weather and threw up when entering the house. Sachin  was ok and remained his usual self – happy and smiling. Sitara had a cold while in Canada  and the travel is a bit tiring too.

Sunday 20 June 2010

This is Father’s Day and Sitara wished her nana (on phone) a Happy Grandfather’s Day – so sweet – though she is not happy that we are not with her in England. She is just recovering from her tiredness . Sachin also wished a Happy Grandpa day – his baby sounds and laughter. Their auntie (Sunjay’s sister) and her family had come to visit and meet them .

It is the day when Sachin became 11 months old . Happy Birthday , son.

 Wednesday 23 June 2010

A 5.0-magnitude tremor originating in Quebec   hit eastern Quebec and Ontario at about 1.41 p.m on Wednesday 23 June.. It was felt in Ottawa , Toronto and many other places . In Deep River , we felt is for many seconds. Kids nana was at Lawn Bawling Club for their Strawberry social and when the earthquake struck, he was playing Bridge -a  card game – . The tremor was shaking the floor but it was not threatening -so the game continued.

The kids were safely in UK at their grandma (“dadi “) home in Rugby.

 Tuesday 29 June 2010

Talking to Sachin’s grandma ( ” dadi “) – who is in England (Rugby) this   day – she mentioned that Sachin is now climbing the stairs to the 2nd floor .

Of course he is watched by his dad . Sachin has not yet started walking on his own – though he stands up holding the edge of a sofa and does cruise around a bit.   We are told by his mom that he stands a long time by himself if he is wearing his running shoes. H eis developing balance.

Sitara , we heard that Sitara helped her grandma ( ” dadi “)   to roll some Chapatis .

Monday 19 July 2010

Kids’ mom (Nina ) called from Rugby – just to exchange few happy moments.   They had just celebrated Sachin’s birthday at a picnic in a park at Rugby on Sunday 18 July . Also at that time they celebrated Sitara’s upcoming birthday  with a special cake   (of Princess theme) cutting.     Sachin has sprung three (3) new a teeth while in U.K.

Tomorrow (on Tuesday 20 July, 2010) is Sachin’s actual birthday – the day will be celebrated at his grandma’s (paternal) –                          “ dadi’s ” home in Rugby.   His   “faiba” (his dad’s  sister , Bhadrikaben )   and family ( His   “fuva”, his dad’s brother-in-law,  Magical  –  & their daughter – Yashmin)  will also come from Darby to join in the a party. At the same time, they will also celebrate Sitara’s birthday too   as she will be with her paternal family in Rugby, U.K. (  though she will be  3 year old on 5th August 2010).   For Sitara, a pool party has been organised on Saturday 7th August   to celebrate her birthday in company of her friends here in Canada  – after they  come back from their  trip to U.K.

Wednesday 21 July 2010

A day after his 1st birthday, Sachin took the first step   on his own for walking – while  at his Grandma’s  (” dadi “) home in Rugby, U.K.   This was conveyed by his mom while talikng to his nani on the phone.   This is a complete astonishing achievement as it  mirrors his mama’s (Sunir’s) first step of walking – Sunir also started walking a day after his 1st birthday.

Saturday 24 July 2010

We heard from Nina that both kids are doing fine in England . Sachin has started to progress in his walking milestone and Sitara is enjoying interfacing with her  ” dadi ” in Rugby. Tomorrow (on Sunday) they will be joining their parents (& grandma) to a puja organised  at a temple near  Deventry  – puja in memory of my mother (Kasturba) who recently passed away in Kenya (on 24th April, 2010) . This day is Baa’s 89th birthday -which she did not make it -only missed by a short period.

The kids going to the temple is unique time -as they will be participating in a prayer for their great grandma- my mother -their nana’s mother-  ( maternal side) -and in the company of many of relatives   – who met the kids while in UK.   Unfortunately, the great grandma had not personally seen the kids and played with them. However, she saw the photos (of both Sitara and Sachin) and some video clips of Sitara when her nana/nani visited Kenya in  2009 to spend time with their great grandma.

Sunday 25 July 2010

The kids joined their parents (and paternal grandma) to attend the prayer meeting in a temple near Daventry for their great grandma -who passed away on 24 April 2010 in Nairobi, Kenya.

Simultaneously, a 2-minute silence and a small prayer was also offered in Deep River at Usha/Subhash home during a “Guru Vandana” puja  – during which  a “Art of Living” group (comprising mostly of members from the local Canadian community) also participated .

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, founder of the Art of Living Foundation and the International Association for Human Values, has inspired a global phenomenon of caring, sharing and service, which has spread to over 140 countries across the globe. Monday 26 July 2010

This is a day when the kids and their parents returned back from England – by Air Canada flight AC889 and landed at the  Ottawa International Airport at about 3.40pm . They were all picked up by their nana/nani in the  2001 Dodge Voyageur maroon minivan.

They slept in the car when travelling to Deep River from Ottawa and after coming to Deep River (arriving about 7.10 pm)  – they were happy to be back in  the familiar surroundings- their toys, nana/nani home and their bed and crib etc.   Both kids were given a bath to freshen them up and to cool them from high humidity and heat (even though the car was air-conditioned) on the way .   Sachin had also had his feed but Sitara just went to sleep after the bath – without any food.   She had eaten on the plane.

Later in the evening they all went to Mackey – their own home.

Tuesday 27 July 2010

Nana/nani went to Mackey during the day to play with the kids and spend time with their mom -as their dad had gone to work.

There was an unfortunate incident in the morning when Sitara was outside to play on her swings. She got bitten by a wasp (a bee) in her left palm . There is a nest of wasp built right on the swing set.   She is okay and took the bite in her stride but the nest needs to be removed.

Thus day Sitara slept in for her afternoon nap – from about 2.00 p.m to about 6.30 pm – just catching up on rest.

Sitara’s sayings

1) On 09 June 2010 -we got the following e-mail from her mom

Last night while playing we asked Sitara “What do you want to do when you grow up” and she replied “I want to get MARRIED”.   We said, “no no, what do you want to do to make money when you grow up” and she said very matter of factly – “oh, I don’t need money.   You put money in my piggy bank”  .

2) On 13 June 2010 – we got the following e-mail rom her mom

Sitara says “Mommy, there are geese over there! Go away Geese, you do poo poo everywhere. You can use MY POTTY if you want!”

3) Her nani says that Sitara is always very cognizant of her need to express herself. And when her nani keeps speaking, she (Sitara) usually have her nani  to stop talking by asking her  to calm down. nani please “c a l m down “.

4) After returningh from UK on 26 July 2010, the kids and their parents stopped at nana/nani home in Deep River for rest and supper before going to their home in Mackey. Sitara went about the house and went to her room ( which is decorated with princess motif)   and went on the bed   (which is queen size) with all the bedsheets & pillow etc. with “princess motif” covers. She felt so relaxed – back to her familiar bed – and said ” I don’t want to go to England anymore ,  ever.  I do not like  it.”   For   a 3-year child – meeting many families, new relatives and moving place to place – sleeping on floor etc. would make a child a bit cranky and also  a bit sick in the stomach.

Wow
