Deep River 150 – Why I love Canada …..

Canadian immigration story   – Story of Acceptance and Integration

For me to love Canada is not the issue to ponder – as there are a range of reasons to love Canada     Oh! we love you Canada – from our heart and soul.

I consider myself as most fortunate for having spent greater part of my life in this beautiful land Canada.

My wife and I emigrated to Canada in 1974 – on 03 March 1974 to be precise — having travelled by air (from Nairobi, Kenya) and landing in Toronto – which was just getting out of winter season. It was bright and sunny day and having a friend at the airport to welcome us which brightened our arrival.

Ours is a heartwarming and touching experience of immigration and settling down in Canada. We were fortunate to have a friend in Toronto (who had migrated to Canada from Kenya a few years before we did) and thus it made a bit easier – especially for my wife to come to a new country.

It so happened I already had a previous stay in Canada for one year. I had spent one year (June 1965- June 1966) in Niagara Falls, Ontario   having come on a Fellowship from the Food Agriculture Organization (F.A.O) of   the United Nations   for practical training (with Acres Consulting Services) in the design of hydraulic structures (hydro power and drainage/irrigation projects). In a way, I had previous experience of all four seasons of Canada   including winter months (with some skating, skiing and driving car on icy roads) – so I was not so   perturbed when emigrating to Canada. Well my wife was a bit worried about winter but comforted by the knowledge that we have had a friend in Toronto. She also was aware of my acquaintances in Niagara Falls, Ontario from my previous stay in Canada.   So the first step to our new home was somewhat comfortably made.

One of the difficulties that we had when emigrating from Kenya (in those days) was very little foreign exchange was allowed for the people travelling abroad. So we had very meager funds for our                     sustenance   but we took a chance to emigrate – hoping to obtain employment as soon we arrived in Toronto.   My wife was a   teacher for high school kids in Kenya and thus had abilities also to fit in with some opportunities.

It was difficult for the first couple of weeks – while getting a bit orientated and then looking for work so we can support ourselves.   As we say – we got a break (someone always looking after us in life) – we made a social visit to meet and say Hi! to one of our old acquaintances (from my previous stay in Niagara Falls) – who was in their office in Toronto and somehow it culminated in my getting   a job (professional) with Acres Consulting Services in Niagara Falls. Thus our roots in the country were established.

Our stay in Niagara Falls, Ontario was just thrilling but also very hectic with many activities – from settling down to becoming part of the new social milieu and Lo Behold!   starting a family.

My family is so besotted to Canada as here we started our family. This is like an experience   of a miracle. My wife and I were married in 1967 in Nairobi, Kenya and for a while we remained without any children – even after trying various medical interventions.   Lo Behold ! after we arrived in Canada on 03 March 1974 and the first medical specialist we established ( in April 1974 in Niagara Falls, Ontario)   came with the unbelievable news that a baby is on the way.   It was difficult to believe and in fact our extended family in Kenya did not believe it till they saw the tell-tale photos.   We are so fortunate that our daughter was born on 14 December 1974   – 9 months and few days after our arrival in Canada. We then were fortunate to have a son after 4 years – to have someone for my daughter to play with . Both   kids were born in Niagara Falls . Now we are fortunate to have a total of five (5) grandchildren who keep us young and active. They are into swimming, skating,   skiing and play ice hockey (besides art, music and class work) – all Canadian.     Love you Canada!

My assimilation in Canada was from the beginning   – my professional life was similar to what I was doing in Kenya. My wife and I were accepted and made welcome in many community activities that we participated in Niagara Falls and other places that we moved over the years. We made friends who became   ” our families ” and who loved our children when they grew up.   Oh! Canada   – what warmth and acceptance.   Love you Canada!

Those who know Niagara Falls – know it for the big waterfalls here and also as a honeymoon capital of North America but there is more to see and understand about Canada here. The city is replete with different kinds of bridges ( vertical lift, suspension and other types   ) -many built in late 1800s over Welland   Canal and over Niagara River connecting to USA. The Welland Canal is a ship canal connecting  Lake Ontario and lake Erie. The Canal boasts many lock gates – which  enables ships to ascend and descend the Niagara Escarpment and bypass Niagara Falls. Many built in late 1800s or early 1900s.

There is so much to study and learn about the marvel of engineering, technology and construction methodology   applied by early pioneers and their perseverance and tenacity under very trying conditions .

This country is exceptional and for that we need to thank the pioneers – the early ones who suffered all kinds of winters/weather, vast distances and lack of facilities and yet persevered and stood fast to build this modern country from coast to coast.   There is so much to love about Canada – the pioneers take the cake.

My wife and I found Niagara Falls becoming our home almost immediately after moving there in early April 1974.   We had friends here from my previous stay (June 1965-June 1966 ) and more from my colleagues at work as well as from our community work that we participated. In fact I became the Chair of the local United Nations Association Chapter in Niagara Falls – which kept us active socially. My wife was embraced like a daughter by quite a few local Canadian families and thus was able to ward of loneliness (complicated by being pregnant in a foreign land)   –   being away from our extended family in Kenya.   We also learnt Canadian pastime of picking berries from the farms around Niagara Falls and my wife learnt preserving these (making jams and jellies) besides   making pancakes and enjoying maple syrup. We being vegetarian – kept away from hot dogs and hamburgers though not from French fries.

As part the United Nations Association Chapter activities – we had Hon. Flora MacDonald (M.P.) come over as chief guest one year.

We also   established a prayer temple during September 1974 in our home in Niagara Falls and were holding prayer services once a month. The central theme of the services was primarily ” prayers for peace “.   Many   people participated in this unique assembly   and prayed together for peace in the world – as peace is paramount for progress and for development of dignified living with interplay across different societies in the world.   We were privileged to have Hon. Roger Young (M.P.) as the chief speaker at one of the prayers. Unfortunately the temple had to be wound down during August 1975 due to our   relocation to Montreal.

We love Canada for the Canadian character of openness with embrace and hearty support of diverse activities without prejudice.

I have to travel sometime due to work related responsibilities, at one time (1979) I was in Sri Lanka for a few days (on assignment for engineering work on an irrigation project there), my wife remaining behind in Niagara Falls with our daughter and expecting another child.   Our ” new extended family ” were just fabulous who kept family vigilance over my   wife and daughter – without an iota of intruding.   We love Canada for such warmth and care.

The engineering work means we have to move sometime to new locations – so we ended up in Montreal (during 1975) for a hydro project   ( Churchill Falls Gull Island Hydro Project ) which was supposed to last at least for five years – if not more.   So we sold our house in Niagara Falls and bought another house ( in a new development) in Laval, Quebec   – while working in downtown Montreal.   Then suddenly the project was cancelled (the funds for the project were withdrawn) and we had to move back to Niagara Falls – having lived in the house for only a few months. Unfortunately the housing market in Quebec collapsed at the election of Rene Lévesque as Première of Quebec -who had promised for referendum for separation of Quebec .   It became difficult to sell the house .   However, my Niagara Falls employer took care of the expenses (while the house was empty) without quibble and thus made our life a bit easier.   Love you Canada for fair minded employer.

Montreal City is fabulous – it is vibrant and full of colour and activities. We liked the old town – bought a few paintings from the artists there. The city would have been top in Canada except its progress was curtailed after the Independence Referendum call and the French language primacy in the province.

English /French politics and kind of rejection felt by French by the English speaking Canada – which led to independence movement under Rene Levesque – PM Pierre Trudeau fought the dilemma passionately and came up with best solution- which defeated the referendum   – and now the country is well balanced and pleasant to live . He remains (in my mind) the best Prime Minister of Canada. I believe that without Pierre Trudeau, we would not have, today, a Canada from coast to coast to coast.

Most of the differences within the country – religious   (Protestant vs Catholics) or political polemics                   ( French vs English ) have been tackled over the years in a democratic dialogue and fair play.  Love you Canada for democracy and fair play.

After   about a year from returning to Niagara Falls , we were back to Montreal on assignment during late 1976 for the design of Wolsung1 – Candu nuclear power station in South Korea;   Acres Consulting Services joining with Canatom as Design Consultants to Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd. (AECL). This is when I got to know and interface with personnel from AECL.

We moved into our vacant house in Laval.

I vaguely remember the snow storm that hit the area in the early 1977 ( I think it was Friday January 28 )- anyway it took more than 4 hours by train ( which normally takes 1 hour ) from   Bonaventure Metro (in downtown Montreal) to Sainte-Catherine – from where I have to walk about 10 minutes to my house.   When the train arrived at the station, it was dark and windy. When I got off the train I found myself alone trying to walk towards my home in pitch dark and high winds. It was an instant when I started questioning as to   what I am doing in this country but then a miracle happened – I saw a head with dark hair at about 100 feet ahead of me. This instantly removed my loneliness and I managed to trundle to my house (albeit slow) . However when I arrived at the house, I found the driveway was full of snow – some 3 feet high and also the patio door was jammed with ice. As I could not get to the front door, I had to shovel the snow from the driveway and help the wife to thaw the patio door before I could settle down and play with my 1 year old daughter -who had been waiting anxiously for daddy to return from work.

It was a momentous time for the family in Montreal . We managed to sell the house after staying in it for about a year and half and then moved into a rented apartment in Pierrefonds area of Montreal. We enjoyed the vibrancy of life in both Laval and Montreal as well as Quebec City and the Mont-Tremblant area.

One pleasant memory of that time is the fragrance and quality of egg breads and rum cakes that we used to get from a Jewish Bakery in Laval –   that would melt in your mouth . Believe it or not, after we left Montreal in 1979 – whenever we go back to Quebec for a visit , we would invariably go to that bakery in Laval and bring back few egg breads and rum cakes home.   What fun! We love you Canada.

We returned back to Niagara Falls in early 1979 . We are now done with living or working in Montreal. After that I worked on miscellaneous assignments  with Acres Consulting Services . One of the assignments was in Calgary area for a few weeks during summer 1980. That was quite an experience in Canadian living   – where people go by plane for trout fishing and barbecuing afterwards. I got invited to a couple of these barbecues – though I do not eat fish but the camaraderie was exhilarating.   Calgary people are very friendly – even the waiters there are more friendlier than anywhere in Canada or the world. I know because I have been to most parts of Canada and also many countries in the world.

I must not forget the Stampede – all the hullabaloo   around it . I got myself a cowboy hat (a city boy and not quite fitting in the style).   The Calgary Stampede is an annual rodeo and festival held every July . Wow! such fun! Only in Canada.

While we are reminiscing my sojourn in Calgary (Alberta) – it does remind me of some important historical fact. Tommy Douglas in Saskatchewan floated the Medicare in 1962 but then in 1950   Alberta’s Social Credit Party also introduced a public health care plan – which became a harbinger for the Canadian Universal Health Plan.

While it is difficult to talk about all the reasons why we love Canada —   I will mention one which is significant . We Canadians are so fortunate   – we have one of the most effective, professional and dedicated Health Service in the whole wide world .   For that we are very grateful, Canada . We love Canada immensely .

My career changed in 1981 – I joined AECL in their CANDU division   (in Toronto ).   So now we moved from Niagara Falls to Mississauga   (Toronto area) where we bought a house – not far away from Sheridan Park – where AECL offices were located. This was the time when interest rates were high and most people were struggling to get mortgage paid and keep the living expenses in check.

While in Toronto area – one remembers the downtown and the Eaton Centre. The traffic and noise is there along with all the excitement of living in a large metropolitan city. I remember Chuck   e Cheese restaurant   – ” where a kid can be   a kid “. Our kids used to enjoy their time there . I do not remember when we stopped going there but all in all we had good times.

On social note,   I became the President of the Jain Society of Toronto in 1985.   During that time , the dark incident of Air India (Flight 182) happened. The bombing of an Air India flight from Toronto to Bombay on 23 June 1985 ”” killing all 329 people on board ”” remains Canada”™s deadliest terrorist attack. The incident was the largest mass murder in Canadian history, and the deadliest incident in the history of Air India.

The   Canadian Authority at the time were shocked but made a ” faux pas “.   Brian Mulroney   was   the Prime Minister of Canada at the time.  When conveying shock and condolences to India for the death of hundreds of people, the tone of wording implied that the Government of Canada had assumed most of them were of Indian citizenship. In fact most were Canadian citizens – though of Indian origin.   Many people were surprised by the Canadian statement .  I (as the President of the Jain Society) got an opportunity to comment about the tragedy on the CBC radio and I pointed out this   ” faux pas ” and our dismay. My comment was reiterated a couple of days on CBC. For whatever reason the Government of Canada corrected the situation subsequently when all realized that the tragedy is impacting Canada more than India.

It should be noted that in earlier years when racial abuse was so prevalent around the world – this country (Canada) opened and welcomed and assimilated many Americans of African descent – gave them dignity like no other country in the world would dare or think of. As recent as a few months ago Canada again excelled in its intrinsic value and welcomed Syrian refugees with love and respect. This humanitarian action at appropriate time by Canada is very telling. This is why we love Canada.

Prior to our move to Deep River, in 1986   there was this burst of entrepreneurial energy which motivated my wife to get into owning and running a Convenience Store business in Hamilton (on Wellington Street) for a year (1985 – 1986) – which was then sold off when moving to Deep River. That year our family moved to Hamilton   – for kids schooling and parental guidance. Our daughter   (11 years old) became familiar with Hamilton city and use of its transportation system.

A great change was effected in my career and in our family’s lifestyle in 1986 when we moved to Deep River – with my taking up a position with Chalk River Nuclear Laboratories. Initially, this move did not meet with family’s unanimous approval as it was a move away to a smaller community but over the years Deep River grew in great esteem by all in the family. There was also one more hic-cup in accepting Deep River as a pleasant place for residing – and that was the existence of swarms of black flies and bugs .This situation has not improved but there is more tolerance and acceptance of this nature -induced phenomena and the family members have learnt to accept this as normal in the general Deep River lifestyle.

One of the advantages that the family experienced is the stability it provided in our daily life. The possibility of frequent move to different town by me on a work assignment (with my previous employment in Niagara Falls) ended and we remained anchored in Deep River – which gave my kids   constant and consistence environment for establishment of friends   – rather than having to change to new friends when we move to another city.

Our both kids went through school system in Deep River and when they finished their high school                         ( Mackenzie High) – each went away to pursue further studies at Universities of his/her choice. Now they are active participants in the economic development of Canada .

While in Deep River – the family took a trip in the summer of 1989 to all provinces west – to British Columbia in our family car on the Trans-Canada Highway. It took almost a couple of weeks to arrive at Vancouver as we made stops at all the provinces in between. At Thunder Bay we visited Kakabeka Falls. The falls is known as the “Niagara of the North ” for its similarity to Niagara Falls . On the way the kids collected box full of different types of rocks such as Amethyst – learning something about Canadian geology.   There was also this thrill of having the view of Lake Superior.   Alberta provided the greatest fun – like having picnic at the Rockies and enjoying the thrill of the Calgary Stampede. Manitoba and Saskatchewan Province  were   resplendent with prairies . The prairies in Canada refers to temperate   grasslands.  We stopped to visit friends at Pinawa (near Winnipeg)   who were working at AECL (The Whiteshell Laboratories ) . This laboratory is now closed down . In 1998, AECL decided to close Whiteshell Laboratories. Vancouver and Victoria were pleasant cities to visit . Victoria is a city known for its wonderful gardens. The return journey back to Deep River took some 4 days .

Discovery of Canada trip did not end only going west.   The family embarked on a road trip during summer of 1991 to the east up to Prince Edwards Island in our family car. We followed the Trans-Canada highway east towards Fredericton.

Our visit to Montreal and Quebec City brought back our memories when we had earlier stayed at Montreal.   Kids loved and enjoyed the horse-drawn carriage ride in Quebec City.

Next New Brunswick (Fredericton) – then Nova Scotia (Halifax) – then Prince Edwards Island (Charlottetown) and finally Newfoundland  (St. John’s ) and Labrador (we did not do Labrador).

There is also Saint John, a port city of the Bay of Fundy in New Brunswick. The Bay of Fundy is known for having the world’s highest tides, and also a population of whales.

Amongst many touristy things, we went to Peggy’s Cove (Nova Scotia) , did Magnetic Hill (near Moncton, New Brunswick) , went to Army Museum Halifax Citadel and visited the Lucy Maud Montgomery Cavendish Home on Prince Edwards Island   – where she wrote the novel Anne of Green Gables.

After we returned from the east, my wife thought of exercising her entrepreneurial spirit again and we bought a business (in the fall of 1991) in Petawawa   (our neighborly town – where a Canadian Forces Base is located). The business was wound up in the year 1999.

My kids have found partners of their choice , they are married and we are pleasantly the grandparents to five (5) grandchildren – two (2) of them are here near us and three (3) are in Toronto.

The grandkids are enjoying Canadian lifestyle . They are into swimming, skating, skiing and play ice hockey (besides art, music and class work).     Love you Canada!

As I had mentioned earlier this flowering of our family is a gift (with our emigration to Canada) that we cherish very deeply and which blossoms our love for Canada immeasurably.

Deep River has provided us many openings /possibilities ( similar to when we were in Niagara Falls &Toronto) to participate in the community activities.  I have fond memories of my time with Deep River Police Service Board, Deep River Hospital Board, Community Liaison Group for Port Hope Waste, Ontario Professional Engineers   -local Chapter , local bridge (card game) groups amongst others.

As we are celebrating 150th anniversary of Canadian Confederation , I am proud  to be a Canadian from since some 43 years ago – and my wife and I celebrated this year our 50th Wedding anniversary on Saturday 27 May here in Canada – with both of our kids   & their spouses along with all 5 grandchildren – participating in the Tamarack Ottawa Race in Ottawa – along with thousands.

We are here in Canada, with its breathtaking beauty, concern for others, and pride in its diversity.

Thank you Canada for our acceptance and loving integration in the Canadian milieu.

We wish the best for the 150th Anniversary of Canadian Confederation.

One Way to beat Winter blues ? Bridge Card Playing – sent to NRT for publication on 31 March 2017

The following article was sent to North Renfrew Times for publication on 31 March 2017 – under the column of ” Letter To Editor “. Unfortunately it did not get published by the NRT – though I had separately circulated it all my bridge colleagues in Deep River, Pembroke, Petawawa and in Toronto too. Got good response from many.

One Way to beat Winter blues ?   Bridge Card Playing

Do you experience the “blues” or low mood during the winter months?

In our land of many seasons , during our harsh winter months  many outdoor team/group activities are suddenly terminated at the onset of winter.   Though some people do take up winter sports and enjoy these activities.

However, there are many people who either  ” hibernate ” indoors with minimal social activities                              ( resulting in social isolation ) or move out to sunny places south – specially to Florida.   The winter sports are usually not quite suitable for elderly/senior people.

Again as the winter is slowly moving out, many people are gearing up for outdoor activities and winter sports do come to a halt.

However  there is one activity which remains constant during all of our seasons – including during winter.

This activity is Bridge Card playing . It’s a   sport which requires a lot of social interaction and this relation with community members remain steady all year round. There is no automatic disruption in playing due to seasonal changes. The local bridge club (s) in the area remain active all year round .

This allows those playing bridge to come out of social isolation during winter and interact with many community members in a relaxed but otherwise challenging activity. It does help to beat Winter blues.

By the way, playing Bridge is termed as participating in a sport activity . In June 1995, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) admitted the World Bridge Federation (WBF) as ‘part of the Olympic Movement’, awarding it the status of a ‘Recognized Sport Organization’.

This recognition was accorded under  Rule 4  of the Olympic Charter.

However so far, Bridge has reached the same level as Golf, Rugby, Squash, Karate etc. which, though recognized as sports, are not yet admitted into the Olympic Games.

Bridge is one of the most popular card games in the world, so there must be some FUN to it!

Those who play bridge will tell you that :

  • ·                 Bridge requires strategic game play – which keeps memory active, the brain alert, and the body healthier.
  • Bridge enhances social life and nurtures partnerships ”“ keys to healthy aging.
  • Bridge   beats   Boredom.
  • One can with a few friends at home, or via a club or tournament or play it online.
  • Bridge requires logic – mathematics and counting – which exercise the brain.
  • Bridge requires concentration and while you are playing your brain is kept active and stimulated.
  • Bridge has such a positive effect on the longevity and quality of life of Seniors.

The bridge makes it possible for the players to relate as well as to communicate with local community members on a regular basis. Friendships are born and developed for life time.

When playing on-line on computer the players are associated with diverse groups of people from all continents – from rich and poor countries and that makes one realize how all human beings have common instincts, intellect and gracefulness.

Bridge is more complicated than other card games, and beginners are sometimes discouraged by this.    Relax!

Bridge is by far the greatest card game of all, and it can provide immense challenge and enjoyment for the rest of your life.

Bridge is a partnership game requiring four players. Each player sits opposite his partner at a card table (in this age of computers the concept could be a simulated).

Bridge is played with a standard deck of 52 playing cards. One of the players deals all of the cards, 13 to each player, in clockwise rotation, beginning with the player to the left of the dealer.

Here is the gem :

Has anyone ever heard of or read about how playing cards match up with our calendar?

The numbers and values in a deck of cards are very similar to the weeks and months of a modern calendar. Is this just a coincidence, or was this relationship intended? A complete deck of playing cards contains four suits, two primary colors, and thirteen values ranging from the Ace to the King. Usually, it contains two Jokers.

There are 52 weeks in the year and 52 playing cards…

There are 13 weeks in each season and there are also 13 cards in each suit.

There are 4 seasons and 4 suits.

There are 12 months of the year and 12 Court cards (those which have faces).

The Red cards represent the Day, the Black cards the Night.

If you let the Jacks = 11, the Queens = 12, and the Kings = 13, then add up all the sums of 1 + 2 + 3 + ”¦to 13 = 91 Multiply this by 4, for the 4 suits; 91 x 4 = 364 then add 1 that is the Joker and you will arrive at the number of days in the year?

Is that mere coincidence? or a greater intelligence…

Note: Of interest is the sum of the letters in all the names of the cards; eg : add up the letters in “one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, Jack, Queen, King” = 52 !

The Spades indicate ploughing/ working, Hearts indicate Love thy crops, Clubs indicate flourishing/ growth, and Diamonds indicate reaping/ wealth….

Also, in some card games 2 Jokers are used… Indicating Leap year….

It seems that there is a deeper philosophy than just a game…

If you have been discouraged or frightened or nervous to play Bridge so far   and now you know rudiments about the Bridge Card playing and its social/ mental/ health benefits as well as coincidental connection to our calendar,  I hope that you will take initiative to come out and play bridge . There are people in the community who will help you to learn and master the conventions and techniques and there are groups who play bridge on a regular basis – no matter what the weather or season.

Please note that the local bridge activities are advertised in the local newspaper, at the local library and sometimes by flyers around town.

So join the fun and bring twinkle in your eyes during dark days of winter or hot sunny days of summer.

Deep River waiting for growth – sent to NRT for publication on 16 April 2017

The following article was sent to North Renfrew Time (NRT) on 16 April 2017 – and it was published on Wednesday 19 April 2017 edition   – under the column – Point of View.

16 April 2017

Deep River waiting for growth.

As   a long time resident of Deep River, I am aware that many residents are concerned about the survival, growth and sustainability of the community. The decline in the town is very visible and the largest employer in the area is going through similar fate over the years. The growth of nuclear industry in Canada is stalled since decades and many scientists and technicians have moved to other places – many to the USA.

Survival and growth of Deep River and surrounding communities depend on the growth of the nuclear laboratories in the area – at least in the immediate and mid-term future. The long term growth of the town (and communities) cannot be predicted at this time.   The search for and possibility of any new industry has met with complete blank – even after investing thousands and many years in the area Economic Development studies.

Now that the new administrative structure  (the GoCo model) is established by the Canadian Government to operate the nuclear site in the area – the revitalization of the site is the part of their Vision 2026 statement and the Canadian   Government seems to support the vision by investing/providing substantial sums of money per year dedicated to successfully achieve this vision .                            Refer to on-line

LINK:   http://www.cnl.ca/en/home/news-and-publications/stories/2016/160414.aspx

There seems to be so much legacy wastes lying around and scattered at various locations at the Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) site – which do present a danger (both radiological and non-radiological) to habitat.   Further, many existing buildings /structures / site services at CNL site are old and somewhat non-code compliant and tending towards being decrepit and building structures seem to be mostly of wooden construction and could be ” tinder ” and thus posing a definite fire hazard.

As I understand, to fulfill and achieve the CNL Vision 2026 for the revitalization of CNL site, it is necessary to   dismantle and remove these old buildings, infrastructures and site services (such as steam line, water lines, electrical systems etc.) and these to be replaced with code compliant and safe services and structures.

This would then allow ” managed ” and progressive revival of the CNL site – hopefully with modern nuclear and related research facilities at the site.

Without the removal of the old decrepit structures and services, the site cannot be transformed into a modern and thriving nuclear research laboratory. Now to facilitate removal all tens of buildings and services, it is necessary to have in place a disposal facility where the removed junk can be disposed off.

I believe it would not be possible or permitted to dispose of such dismantled buildings and site services materials          (containing varying degree of radioactivity) at the municipal garbage disposal (Landfill Site) facility on                        Baggs Road. Even if it is permitted, Baggs Road Landfill site has no capacity to accept such volume of waste.

Further, the dismantled wastes also cannot be carted away to any other site in Canada as such a site is non-existent. Even if such a site is available, the carting of millions of cubic meters of radioactive wastes over the highways would be logistically difficult and very expensive.

So logically, if there is no credible/engineered disposal facility which can accept such wastes – the existing decrepit and site services really cannot be dismantled and thus these old structures will remain in place and deteriorate over the years and then the fallen structures will contaminate the grounds and soil resulting in the contamination migrating towards Ottawa River and contaminating the river without any meaningful monitoring or control.

That would be a shame! The Chalk River site will be abandoned at some time in its life as there will not be much renewal which can be brought in on the site.   The local community loses.

The CNL site is a licensed nuclear site in Canada and in operation for more than half a century.

The site has adequate space which can accommodate a new engineered waste disposal facility (of proper type and size) for low level radioactive contaminated   wastes.

I am confident that the proposed disposal facility will be a professionally engineered and monitored site and would also have gone through stringent regulatory evaluation and have been verified by internationally renowned qualified experts in their fields of expertise.

There comes a time when bold visionary decisions are necessary or critical in one’s life or in the community’s life.   Of course the decisions should be made with proper understanding and required study and scrutiny.

The concept of the development of the proposed disposal facility by CNL is one of these.

While the development of a disposal facility can be accepted as necessary, however it cannot be accepted blindly and thus require scrutiny. It must be remembered that the ” devil is in the details ” and necessary timely constructive criticism or comments can enhance the safety and acceptance of such a facility.

It is my plea that we look at the proposed disposal facility not with emotional eyes and not with the psyche of   ” not in my backyard ” syndrome but with a bold vision to support the revival of the nuclear research, science and technology in our area and in Canada. It is important that such nuclear knowledge is not lost but retained and expanded for our next generation – who will be in high competition with many countries for such knowledge – critical to our safety, security and independence.

This is a momentous time in the history of Deep River and surrounding communities – with challenges and opportunities. It’s time for the area residents to be part of a bold visionary decision for the development of a well engineered and regulated waste disposal facility – which would allow/facilitate the revitalization/revival and growth of CNL site – which will, over the years, enhance Canada’s nuclear science and technology knowledge – with a possibility, in future, of development of a nuclear research reactor at CNL site.

All this, in turn, will influence the growth, survival and sustainability of Deep River and surrounding communities.

This is my opinion.

Christmas 2016

I wrote the following article on Sunday 20 November 2016   – titled ” Christmas 2016 – and have sent it to North Renfew Times , Deep River on Monday evening ( by   e-mail) for publication .   It mat take some time before they may publish it.

I write an article at Christmas time since many years and these get published in the local newspaper.   Many people like my writing.

Christmas   2016

Merry Christmas !

Merry Christmas !

Merry Christmas !

This auspicious chanting is in the air . Christmas is just  round the corner.   Houses are getting decorated   with sparkling   lights . Many groups are preparing for singing Christmas choral songs   and many are already   scouring shops for gifts/presents   for their loved ones   . There is an atmosphere of happiness and society is getting cheerful as Christmas holidays are getting nearer.

It is a joyous occasion as the world is getting ready to celebrate the birth of Lord Jesus Christ. Why is it so   joyous?   It is a Christian occasion but this birth is celebrated by all – no matter what faith one follows.

It has to do with the personality – the son of God   who is born to bring God’s   message of   love and peace   – with smile and   then sacrifice Himself at the Roman Cross  without any hint of revenge or   violence on His part.

He said –   “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”

His message of   Love Thy Neighbors , Turn your other cheek,  Be warm and compassionate to all, Forgive   yourself and also your enemies   are time- tested messages which , if followed genuinely, can bring all nearer to Godly experience.

In this season of heavenly joy , we need to understand the political changes that many of our Western societies are going through .   There is racial strife   bubbling within these   societies .   It seems that populism and demagoguery are on the march and liberalism is in retreat.

We are lucky in Canada that our country has kept up the values of tolerance and compassion . These are the values that   Lord Jesus stood for and died for on the Roman Cross.   We all know that the politics of identity is very much in conflict with tolerance and inclusiveness.

Lest we forget the lessons of the 2nd World War – the mass genocide of Jews , millions killed and use of nuclear weapons – all because of false pride in one’s culture and religion   and ignoring others as lesser human beings . If majority remain silent  and   If people will not speak up for other people’s rights, there will come a day when their own rights will be trampled on mercilessly .

Quote:

In Germany they first came for the Communists, and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Communist. Then they came for the Jews, and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Jew. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a trade unionist. Then they came for the Catholics, and I didn’t speak up because I was a protestant. Then they came for me, and by that time there was nobody left to speak up. – Reverend Martin Niemoller, Germany, 1930’s

Teachings of Lord Jesus reminds everyone to speak up against injustices against all. There would be   price to pay and at times utmost sacrifice may be necessary .   The true believers  would   lean on the spirit for Guidance in these areas.

The world  is at a   cross-road , multiple centers of powers are coming up and this creates intense competition for influence and hegemony.   Further the world is inhabited by people with different faiths which are at times at loggerheads . Unfortunately , this is keeping the world at heightened intolerance   and pain.

This Christmas we need to make effort to keep  our minds open  and   reiterate our faith in humanity and understanding of the Creator God’s   many facets of creation – of flora and fauna , animal kingdom and most important many strands of human community. We cannot despair of various conflicts in the world but work to diffuse such conflicts so our   world remain peaceful and progress for the good of all our grandchildren – no matter of what colour or faith or where they are living.

Any form of prejudice will   negate the teachings of Lord Jesus .

The time rolls on and we are here once more to celebrate the Christmas holidays .

Santa Claus is coming to town .  Let us make the Santa Claus Parade livelier and bigger than ever this year.

Some people are a bit annoyed that the holidays have lost its adjective ” Christmas” and have taken a new   adjective ” Seasonal “.   This is to accommodate many Canadians who are atheists , agnostics, non-Christians amongst us.  Personally, I would prefer it be called what it really is – it is a ” Christmas Holidays ” .

We all enjoy the festivities and to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ on this earth.   He was a   personification of divine attributes that lie within a human soul.

So let us all wish each other :   Merry Christmas !

Grandparents – 2016- 1st Quarter

Happy New Year

The grandkids have brought heaven on this earth for their Deep River Grandparents. So understanding, so playful , so loving and caring for each others when thys spent time together in Deep River recently.

Friday 01 January 2016

Both Sitara and Sachin came over to Deep River ( with their parents ) from Mackey at about 10.30 am – to play with their cousins from Toronto ( Maya and Kieran – who is the baby of the family) and also to pass time with their Mama and Mami.   The kids played together very well and joined in making/erecting a Frozen Princess themed Ginger Bread house -along with their mommies.

After lunch , the kids went with their parents for tobogganing at the Hill park close to the grandparents house in Deep River   .Nani also joined in -at least to observe the kids enjoying.

After dinner. Sachin tried to play Pokemon Card game with his nana – helped by his SunirMama – who read the rules from the Instruction Sheet. It was difficult and this the game was terminated earlier before completing it .Sachin and nana will play the game later with enough time in hand.

After Maya and Kieran were went to sleep and while Sitara and sachi9n were busy on the computer in the Recreation room – the adults retired to play Dutch Blitze Card game on the Dining table – as only four can play the game at a time – both seniors (grandparents) were spectators/cheerleaders to the fun-filled game.

This will be final day for the three families to spend time together (at the end of   the year 2015 and welcoming the new year 2016) enjoying the joy of family members and grandchildren playing so lovingly with each other and all confirming the traditional bonding at this time .

However, there was bit of departure from this sentiment when Grandma had handed over the ” Candy Cane”   (made by Sunir in his younger days for the family Christmas Tree at Deep River home) to Shannon to take that to Toronto for their Christmas Tree. This was without asking Grandpa – without care for Grandpa’s feelings   – as Grandpa had already expressed few time during last few days (and also this very day) how he considers the Deep River home Christmas Tree incomplete unless he sees Sunir’s Candy Cane on the Tree. So Grandpa grouched and get a bit annoyed (though softly) and unhappy about that – so Shannon lovingly put/hanged it back on the Christmas Tree   in the living room.   This episode left a bit of gloom and a bit sad feeling amongst all.

Saturday 02 January 2016

Sunir and family left at about 9.30 am from Deep River in their silver Subaru Outback car for Toronto – via Huntsville where they will have lunch and spend time with Shannon’s maternal grandma .

This is what Kieran’s Bapuji posted on his Facebook wall (on this date) along   with Kieran’s photo -just getting ready to step out of the Deep River home.

”   Kieran, Our 1 1/2 yr old grandson saying bye going back to Toronto after spending few joyful days with his cousins (Sitara and Sachin), grandparents , Foi (Aunt) /Fuva (Uncle) and of course along with his sister (Maya) and his parents. All kids were superb – interplaying with each other with love and care. A delightful and heavenly sight for grandparents. All kids were tops but Kieran was Super Top -with his perennial smile and conversation bits. Memories will be cherished . Thanks Kieran, Maya. Sachin and Sitara for making holidays very joyful and memorable for us. adults We love you all. ”

This is what his Grandma Kathy (from Toronto) commented :

” He is a delight, for Sure! I’m glad you had a wonderful visit! ”

Sunday 04 January 2016

This day is a rest day – just before schools open and adults go to their places of work to earn a living.

However, Sitara and Sachin went to North Bay ( with their parents ) to watch Star Wars Movie in 3D.

This is what their mom posted on her Facebook wall:

” The kids loved Star Wars in 3D. A whole new world of watching movies with the kids has opened up! “

Saturday 09 January 2016

This day it was to start the downhill skiing (at Mt. Martin Ski Hill in Deep River) for Sitara and her dad but the weather did not co-operate – it was raining the whole time . Thus they joined Sachin and his mom to Pembroke – where at the Pembroke Community centre ( Pem Ice II ) there was a Tim Horton Ice Hockey tournament ( Pembroke IP Fun day) – in which Sachin was participating.

He had three plays – i) at 10 am   ii) at 1.00 pm and iii) at 4.00 pm.

Due to inclement weather ( icy and windy) – nana/nani did not go to Pembroke to cheer the young Sachin but in the evening it was compensated by all watching the video of Sachin’s plays on the Smart TV in nana/nani living room .   What a kid! he is definitely enjoying his Ice Hockey and at the end of his 3 games he got a medallion (like all othet kids who participated)   to take home for his memory of the game.

Sunday 10 January 2016

This day Maya graduated to a bunk bed   – the idea is that she will sleep with Kieran in the same room. Maya at the top bunk and Kieran at the bottom bunk.   This will free up one room upstairs for other uses at their home in Toronto.

There was an e-mail message (of 10 January 2016) from Maya/Kieran mom – letting the relatives know of changes.

" We decided to set up the bunk bed yesterday. The kids thought it
was lots of fun. Maya slept in the top bunk last night and can't wait

until Kieran is old enough to have a sleepover on the bottom!”

Sunday 10 January 2016

For Maya’s escapade onto a bunk bed . this is what her Bapuji responded in his mail

” So exciting ! Both Maya and Kieran are having fun.

I hope that Maya slept well in her top bunk.

It reminds their Bapuji his days in the bunk many many year ago – in Mombasa.

Tuesday   12 January 2016

Surprise breakfast buddies – both Sitara and Sachin came over with their mom for breakfast with nana/nani – since Nina was to work around Deep River Home  She drove the kids and thus all had a good enjoyable breakfast together before the kids were carted off to the school by their mom.

Kids know that nana is going to Ottawa for a medical procedure next Monday (with their mom) and thus they remain very caring for nana.

Friday   15 January 2016

It   was a ” Show and Tell ” day for Sachin at school.

He took his Christmas Gift of   a Wind-up Robot   for the occasion.

This is what his mom said in her e-mail (dated   15 January 2016)

” Sachin was very proud of his present from his Mamma and Mammi and took his wind up robot into school for show and tell today.”

His ShannonMami responded :

” Awesome! Glad he likes it 🙂 ”

Saturday 16 January 2016

This day became the first downhill skiing at Mt Martin Ski Club – the snow season was not very conducive so far as the weather was warm in the Deep River Area so far.

Sitara and Sachin both had good skiing time starting in the afternoon – along with their parents .

Kids’ dad is now fully trained Ski Patrol person at the ski hill this season – he started that role last season.

In the evening (after their dinner at Burger King in Deep River), Sachin was dropped at nana/nani home   and Sitara went with her parents to the Deep river Arena for her Figure Skating session.

Sachin played with   his nana various card games and a memory board game – his nani also joined in the card game for a while. When Sitara and her parents came to nana/nani home at about 8.00 pm (after her Figure Skating) she joined in the memory game ( to help out nana against Sachin) – though Sachin won 20 pairs against nana’s 15 pairs.   The kids went home ( by their car VW Jetta ) to Mackey shortly after that with their parents .

Nana/nani were informed that on Sunday (next day) at 11.00 am the kids will be participating in ski championship race/match.

Sunday 17 January 2016

This day was the downhill ski race at Mt. Martin Ski Hill in Deep River.

5 teams were competing .

Sitara’s identity number is 17 and Sachin’s identity number is 1 for this whole season.

Nana/nani went to the ski hill to watch and cheer the kids – albeit at the tail end of the race and managed only to watch Sitara starting out on her last race   ( on the Barlow Merret Trail) . Sachin had already gone   downhill (a bit earlier) for his last race.

The parents then subsequently went for skiing  (after the race was over) and nana/nani just enjoyed walking and going around at the ski hill – till the winners were announced.     Of the 5 teams competing, the team in which Sitara and Sachin were members – won the   2nd place.  Ski racers  younger than 12 years old are not judged  for individual effort – so Sitara and Sachin were not judged for their individual skiing . After the announcement of winners, Nana/nani returned back to their home in Deep River. The kids and parents stayed behind to enjoy the day downhill skiing

Sitaara and sachin were in Team 1 – euphematically called ‘Mountain Monsters’

Friday 22 January 2016

Kids (Sitara and Sachin) have been visiting their nana/nani after they (nana/nani along with their mom) ) returned back from Ottawa after nana’s AngioGram.   The kids were looked after in Mackey/Deep River by their dad – when their mom was driving (in nana’s Dodge Minivan) and taking nana (along with nani) to Ottawa to the Heart Institute (and staying at the Intern Residence -rm 906- of Ottawa Civic Hospital) .

Kids were aware of the nana’s procedure – and prior to that event, they would come over to nana/nani home and give love and hugs and just plain comfort.

So when nana/nani came home with their mom on Wednesday 20 January 2016 – they came nana/nani home after school . Sachin played with nana on the tablet and also he had brought one Pokomon story book . Subsequent days they until today they came over in the morning (before going to school) -have breakfast here at Deep River home – and then driven to school either by their mom or by their nani (usually they go at about 9.15 am ).   These days Sachin brought   some more of his Pokomon story books for nana to read   – he knows that nana is a fan ( Sachin’s partner in a way) of Pokomon characters – as nana likes to interface with Sachin and read to him books about the Pokomon characters.

Note: These days , Sachin is just involved with anything pokomon – books and Videos on the computers. At age 6 , he is so beholden with the Pokomon trend .

On Thursday evening ,  all (except the kids’ dad – who was at the Mt. Martin Ski Club where he volunteers as a Ski Patrol ) – played the card game ” Sequence” at nana/nani home after dinner .

Note: – This game is bought by their mom (parents) and was played in Ottawa when nana was recuperating at the Intern Residence past week -for two days) . On Thursday, all three games were won by Sachin (Sitara having come a bit late for playing) . The little   guy is sharp and get to know the rules fast and ways to play a winning game .

Both kids remain very cool – looking after each other and play together . On this day (Friday) both kids came over to nana/nani home ( dropped by their dad ) – had breakfast and they had some time to play together on nana’s tablet -so serenely, very friendly with each other and happily . It was scene which comforted nana very much . Of course , Sachin also had brought   a couple of more Pokomon story   books for nana – which these   days nana is really lapping up – and thus   nana does not have to borrow, at this time,  any other reading   book from the Deep River Library.

Saturday   23 January 2016

This day we did not see the kids (Sitara   and Sachin) as it was Saturday and their both parents would want tp spend as much time as feasible with them. However, both of them were busy in their activities – Sachin in his Ice Hockey game at Deep River Arena – he being playing   as   a goalie to-day . Sitara had her figure skating yesterday and music class -learning piano playing . To-day in the afternoon   both of them joined their parents for the downhill skiing at Mt Martin Ski Hill in Deep River .

Maya and Kieran must be pleased to welcome their dad back today from USA . And surprise! surprise ! Maya wanted to say Hi to Bapuji on Skype in the evening   – she knows about the treatment/procedure  her Bapuji had at the Ottawa Heart Institute last week . She was so nice and giving all the cheers to her Bapuji on the skype. She as accompanied by her dad at her end and Bapuji was accompanied by Maya’s Ba at Deep River end.   Kieran was downstairs with his mom – just getting relaxed after a sleepless early morning when his dad was enroute from USA.

Tuesday 26 January 2016

It was a fun day . Kids and parents all gathered together at nana/nani place and all had a nice dinner . After dinner all played the card game” Sequence” . Six players . Great fun. And the kids are sharp – the first game was won by Sachin and the second by Sitara . Adults did not do well.

This day nana/nani got to know of the Sachin’s first birth tooth getting loose . A lower front tooth is now “wiggling” . A visit by ” the Tooth Fairy ” is imminent.

Sachin had brought another new book on Pokomom to show to his nana.   And his nana told him (Sachin) that he (his nana) has finished two of his previously brought Pokomon story books – starring Ash the Pokomon trainer (with his Pokomon Pikachu).   Sachin was very elated .

Thursday   28 January 2016

This   day, Sitara would have one of her friends (Reese) from Deep River   come over to Mackey for a sleep over – after her ( & also Reese’s) Figure skating at the Deep River Arena.

Friday   29 January 2016

This day there was a PA day at the Mackenzie Community School in Deep River and thus there was no school for the kids (Sitara and Sachin) for the day . They stayed home in Mackey   for better part of it and then came over to nana/nani home with their mom in the late afternoon -to get ready for going for the downhill skiing   in Petawawa. After their dad came over (after his work -about 4.30 pm) and got ready for skiing , they all drove away in their VW Pssast car ( this car was in Ottawa garage for repair of the “rust ” problem and retrieved by their mom only   a day before ).   They went to ski at Mt. Molson ski club on Laurentian Drive in Petawawa.

Note: This coming week (on Thursday 4 February 2016)  Maya (in Toronto) will be participating in a concert in her KG school . She will also be receiving her Report Card.

Sunday   31 January 2016

This is what Sachin’s mom posted on her Facebook Wall :

” Poor Sachin. His two front bottom teeth are hanging on by a thread….literally! These are his first teeth to fall out and he is COMPLETELY freaked out! He doesn’t know what to do with himself. This happened so quickly that I haven’t even started sewing his Tooth fairy pillow. He will just have to borrow his sisters… ”

Howver later she posted another message on her Facebook Wall :

Sachin lost his first baby tooth today – lower front.

Wednesday   03 February 2016

Now Sitara has graduated from reading lots of Archie comic books to reading Shakespearian books.

Here is what her mom posted on her Facebook Wall (of 03 February) with a photo of Sitara reading                   ” The Twelfth Night ‘ :-

That day in the afternoon, Sachin went with his dad to the Mt. Martin Ski Club for downhill skiing .

Sunday   07 February 2016

This day at the Mt. Martin Ski Club (in Deep River) there was skiing competition and both Sitara and Sachin were participating.   Both were part of a Team . Sachin was identified as # 1 and Sitara was # 17 . Their team was called Mountain Monsters.

Nana/Nani went to cheer them up – the competition   was starting at 11.00 am .

Their team came 2nd .

On Saturday . February 6, Deep River Skaters took part in the Region 6 Interclub Skating competition in Pembroke.

CanSkate Elements -Stage 4 : Sitara got a Silver ribbon.

Sitara was also part of the Introductory Group- : Deep River Insiders.

Friday 04 March 2016

Sitara was part of the (MCS) Mackenzie Community School (Deep River) Junior Elementary Group   (Grade 3/4) – the Group (along with other competing Groups) participated in the Kiwanis Music Festival competition at the Festival Hall in Pembroke. Sitara arrived in school bus with her Choir Group.

Each Group sang two songs .

This is what her mom posted on her Facebook wall (of this date):

” Congratulations to the MCS Junior Elementary Choir (Grade 3/4) – They have won 2nd Place at Kiwanis. The MCS Senior Elementary Choir (Grade 5-8) won 1st Place! This photo is of Festival Hall and the adjudicators table. What a wonderful experience for our children ”

So after the Music Festival, Sitara returned by school bus back to MCS in Deep River. After school ended at 3.40 pm , she and Sachin were picked by their mom and then after dinner all (including their dad) drove to Ottawa (in their dark blue VW Passat car) as Sitara was participating/competing ( as part of  the Deep River Insiders Synchro Figure Skating team) in the Eastern Ontario Synchro Skating Competition in Ottawa.

This is what her mom posted on her Facebook Wall :

” Best of luck to Sitara and the Deep River Insiders Synchro Figure Skating team today! They are competing in the Eastern Ontario Synchro Skating Competition in Ottawa today! ”

They all returned back on Saturday – just after lunch time – kids and dad were dropped off at the                      Mt Martin Ski Hill for the Pat Harvey Fun day   and Nina came over to nana/nani home to change for the ski hill.   Nana/nani then came to know that Deep River Insiders Synchro Figure Skating team   ( Team in which Sitara was part of) came third (Bronze Medal)     – out of 6 participating teams .   Congratulations Sitara !

This is what her mom posted on her Facebook Wall (of course with a photo with a medal around her neck) :

” Proud Sitara – Bronze – Eastern Ontario Syncho Skate Competition – Ottawa, Ontario March 5, 2016”

This being the Pat Harvey Fun Day (Saturday   05 March 2016) at the Mt. Martin Ski Hill in Deep River, the whole family (Nina, Sunjay, Sitara and Sachin) were involved . Sitara and Sachin taking part in competition and general fun activities , Nina helping in the organization and also having fun downhill skiing   and Sunjay being a Ski Patrol person , also having fun downhill skiing and helping in the Fun Day organization.

Nana/nani went to the Hill about 5.30pm to watch and participate in the fun.   At award time Sachin won in his age category ( in fact his name was the first one called out for the medal – which made him so happy).   Congratulations Sachin !

This is what his mom posted on her Facebook Wall (Of course with a photo of Sachin with his medal around his neck) :

” Sachin wins Bronze in his age category at the Mount Martin Downhill Club Championships – March 5, 2016 – What a day! ”

After the award, the Ski patrol persons made a parade skiing   downhill   with a torch flame in their   hand(s) – making a very impressive tableaux of a ” lighted” parade snaking downhill. Once the parade was downhill, fireworks started making a very exciting display .

At the end of the Fireworks nana/nani returned home – kids remaining at the Hill – continuing with their fun and helping to wind up the day.

Saturday 05 March 2016

Maya and Kieran had a March Break sleepover at their Grandma home in Toronto.

This is what their Grandma (Kathy) posted on her Facebook Wall – of course with photos :

“Two little children came to Grandma’s and Grandpa’s for a sleepover last night, to give their weary parents a mini March Break. One wanted Pink Dinner; one wanted Green Dinner. Grandma was so proud of her compromise Pink AND Green Dinner. (See photos). All went well until 4 am. Now Grandma needs a March Break…. ”

Friday 11 March 2016

This day Ba/Bapuji drove to Toronto in their 2001 maroon Dodge Minivan to be   with Maya and Kieran for a few days – to celebrate Kieran’s 2nd Birthday. The kids were very happy and excited to see their Ba/Bapuji .   It so happened their dad had to go to USA (on business) a day before and thus would miss Kieran’s birthday next day on Saturday   . However, the family had also planned a second celebratory birthday celebration event on Tuesday ( 15 March 2016) after Kieran’s dad return back from USA on Monday (14 March 2016) .

Saturday   12 March 2016

This is   a very joyous day in the family – Kieran becoming two year old . Happy Birthday Kieran !

A brunch party to celebrate Kieran’s 2nd Birthday was organized at home in Toronto . His maternal grandparents (Kathy and Doug)   , his Aunt Heather and RyanUncle along with his cousin Cole came over and join the party to congratulate and celebrate Kieran’s birthday . Maya (Kieran’s sister) was all in joyous mood -all ready to tickle and coddle Kieran.   Kieran’s mom and Ba/Bapuji were also very excited.

After the brunch, gifts were opened by Kieran .He was all in happy mood . Here is the poem that his Bapuji wrote for the occasion :

Kieran’s 2 Yr Birthday Poem – 12 March 2016

Hey Kieran you so much sparkle

Like diamonds at night

Your siren call of joy startles all

Our child of 2 year just bubbles up

You make our joy more than double

Kieran a loving brother of Maya

Our cuddly teddy of the family

Your grandpa loves you immensely

You have wiped out each worry

You make your Grandpa feel content

The journey of life is fulfilled

You are amazing grandson

We wish you today

With lots of kisses and hugs

Happy birthday to You.

We love you ! Kieran.

Sunday   13 March 2016

This day all took it easy – resting but Maya and Kieran were taken by their mom (accompanied by Ba) to the kiddies’ Park across the road from the house .

In the evening all walked to their grandparents home (in the neighborhood) for dinner . It was very warm hospitable dinner and both Maya and Kieran were very happy and enjoyed the dinner – and all the coddling by their paternal grandparents.

Monday 14 March 2016

Both kids spent the day at their respective DayCare       (being March Break, Maya also   spent the day at her KG school but at the Daycare center) . Maya was dropped/walked to her school by her Ba/Bapuji and Kieran was dropped (by car) to his DayCare by his mom.

Well kids’ (Maya and Kieran)   dad returned back from USA ( late in the evening ) .

Tuesday  15 March 2016

Again both kids spent the day at their respective DayCare and picked from there in the evening by their dad.

After dinner, a Birthday cake was cut by Kieran ( a 2nd celebration) and Happy Birthday song was sung by the family and much merrymaking was done . The Kids were happy and had fun.

Thursday   17 March 2016

Ba/Bapuji returned back to Deep River in their car. They had   a great tine with both the kids (Maya and Kieran) .   Kieran has a good vocabulary for a 2-year old and can hold a conversation very clearly and well . His laugher is spontaneous and very musical – a very cheerful disposition.

A great bonding between Kieran and his Ba/Bapuji was renewed   and it was a very joyous time spent by Ba/Bapuji in with the family in Toronto.

Friday 18 March 2016

Both Sitara and Sachin here in Mackey /Deep River area were missing their nana/nani for a few days when they were in Toronto (and vice versa)   – so nana/nani   spent the day at Mackey – went by car there in the afternoon at 1.30 pm.     Kids played with their nana/nani many different   games . After dinner, nana/nani returned back to Deep River   –   a bit early as Sachin had to rest for his Ice Hockey competition at Barry’s Bay early next day (on Saturday 19 March 2016).

Sachin enjoys the junior ice hockey. One can see happy smile on his face.   At Barry’s Bay hockey, his role will be to be a goalie for his Deer River IP Hockey team – for which he is bestowed ( I guess by his parents) with a special Goalie hockey stick – all done to stop   a goal.

Sachin’s team did well at Barry’s Bay.

Saturday 19 March 2016

Guess who got a hair cut ? The first one – Kieran (our 2 year Grandson in Toronto) .

His mom sent an e-mail dated 19 March 2016 - with Kieran's photos while the barbers shop
with a title " Kieran's New look " and with a text note " From ringlets to a new do "

Sunday  20 March 2016

Today Sachin played his Ice Hockey game in North Bay – NBC style .   Only for 10 minutes or so and going overtime . He was driven there by his parents ( and of course Sitara also went to cheer him) .

Saturday 26 March 2016

Sitara and Sachin spent a night (sleep over ) at nana/nani home as their parents had to go to Ottawa to attend a party at Dena’s place   . The kids were a joy and played with nana/nani , read books ( Sachin borrowed 3 Pokémon story books from the DR library ) and played on their game gizmos. (mechanical, electronic game gizmo) . On Sunday morning after breakfast, all played the new Star war Monopoly (that nana/nani has recently got for the kids) game before they were picked by their parents and driven to Ottawa to go to Canada Agriculture and Food Museum   (to celebrate Easter at the Farm ).

Note:

At the Museum this Easter weekend!

After a long winter, the barns have come alive with the arrival of newborn animals. Sitara has completed an awesome painting for entering it into a contest -organized by the Canada Day 2016 Art Contest with Government of Canada.

The electronic copy of the painting was distributed by her mom T to relatives.

This is the response by her nani   – which very aptly describes the merit of the painting by this talented   8 year old girl.

“ Sitara, your painting is just awesome. You have depicted all the elements–earth ,sky, sun-come peace sign, living bodies and the message with Canada flag. Just love it. “   – nani

NRT – Letter to Editor- Why we should celebrate 2014 Christmas ?

The following article was published in the North Renfrew Times (Deep River) on its weekly Wednesday edition dated 10 December, 2014

——————————–

07 December, 2014

Why we should celebrate 2014 Christmas ?

The time has come for the 2014 Christmas and festivities and we are getting in the mood to celebrate the good times.

This is the time of year when we unburden ourselves from all the worldly worries/pain and think about and thank for the   gifts God has showered on us over the whole year – notwithstanding some difficulties and obstacles experienced.

Within family , many of us are fortunate to enjoy the family members and their achievements and accomplishments but more important are the grandchildren who give us unlimited love and joy.

We were overjoyed when our grandchildren participated in this year’s   Deep River Santa parade . They were angels – unencumbered with worldly worries and strife.

Personally , I have passed the year peacefully/happily   and with a normally good health for a senior though with advancing age I had my moments. I am sure my wife survived my occasional shenanigans and deficiencies .

As a community,   we welcomed the newly elected   Municipal Council members and a new   Mayor for the town. We are hopeful that they will execute their responsibilities with aplomb and seriousness   and work to streamline expenses so that the actual Property Taxes are reduced .   Deep River Property Taxes are becoming a burden for all but   mostly for the seniors – whether on pension or not.

In Canada we had the attack on our Parliament.    A series of shootings occurred on October 22, 2014, in Ottawa.   At the   Canadian national War Memorial   Corporal Nathan Cirillo, a Canadian soldier on ceremonial   sentry duty was shot dead .

On October 20, 2014, Martin Couture-Rouleau   deliberately rammed a car into a group of two Canadian Armed Forces   soldiers in a shopping centre parking lot in   Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec .  Patrice Vincent   lost his life from this attack.

But we Canadians have weathered these events   with great solemnity and without any   generalisation of blame on any community/race/nationality /religion .

That is the spirit of Christmas – when we do not go into the blame game but take rational steps to diffuse the situation.

Yes,   at times we need to sacrifice and hold our anger and frustration and   look to our Creator for solace and guidance in life.

The baby born in Bethlehem fulfilled His destiny to offer himself as a sacrifice for our sins.

His life needs to be celebrated with all the commitment for service and good of the society.

The message is clear – whether one is a Christian by faith or not   – the life of Lord Jesus and His actions were for correcting the injustices but with peace and love – that is the only way – otherwise   ” taking an eye for an eye ” will make us all blind.

That is the reason for celebrating Christmas   – not for worldly gifts/toys/electronics/etc but for   a reminder /renewal of love and sacrifice for good of all.

The basic and most telling messages behind both the biblical (religious) and fictional (Santa Claus) stories of Christmas are the virtuous elements of humanity: goodwill, kindness, caring, compassion, and giving.

Municipal Election, 2006

                                                                                                                                                                                                                    2006 October 29

Municipal Election, 2006

There were eight (8) candidates who assembled (at the McKenzie High School Auditorium on Wednesday 2006 October 25 under the umbrella of Deep River Community Association) to introduce themselves to the community and debate on civic issues for the upcoming municipal elections. The election contest is for five (5) Councillor positions.

This was the most civil gathering. There was humour and wittism too. There were neither angry outbursts nor any outspoken issues. We are very fortunate for noble contestants.

The meeting was well attended. Unfortunately not many younger citizens or “so called” new Canadians were present. The participation by all segments of the community is healthy. I hope this will be addressed in future municipal deliberations by creative (or targeted) advertising.

Most agreed that the past Council did a good job. Most agreed the uncontested Mayoral candidate is the right candidate for the position. I do not recall anyone remembered or mentioned the uncontested Deputy Mayoral candidate.

Most agreed with each other on issues except for a couple of small differences. Out of eight (8) candidates, one (1) candidate served the Town as a Mayor in the past; two (2) candidates had held key positions within the Council bureaucracy for long years and were somewhat influential in the workings of the Council. Three (3) candidates are standing for reelection. Only two (2) candidates bring fresh faces to the contest.

Two (2) immediate issues were raised (for the need to upgrade Balmer Bay Road and the need for an accessible public washroom around Deep River Yacht & Tennis club).

So if you are not perturbed the way the Town is run or the Town bureaucracy is organized, then your choices are very clear. If you believe that a status quo is not healthy then the choices become complicated and you need to seriously choose the candidates who can bring fresh ideas and articulate these without being afraid to shake the established routine.

One choice you would not want! That is to remain on the sideline. Everyone (who is eligible to vote) must get out to vote.
