About pravinshah

I am a citizen of Canada, emigrating to Canada from Kenya in 1974. I am currently working but have offered my retirement letter effective Monday, 2007 April 16. This is just after my 67th birthday (which falls on April 08). I have been working as Professional Cvil Engineer (and subsequently as a Manager since 1962 June).

POEM for my AmuMama ( Uncle)

My AmuMama   passed away on 12 July 2017 in Nairobi, Kenya.   AmuMama was   born in Kenya , lived his whole life in Kenya.   AmuMama had been a pillar to me – when I was 16 years old and completed my Senior Cambridge in Mombasa – he helped me with moral and financial support so I could start on my journey to become a professional engineer . I graduated from the Royal College , Nairobi ( second batch of the newly opened college   -with Mahatma Gandhi statue- funds contributed by the Indian Community of East Africa) in 1962 as a Civil Engineer with professional qualification from the Institution of Civil Engineers of London   . With the dire financial situation my parents (specially in 1956 ) – I was given support by my AmuMama (plus  all other of his brothers) . I stayed with the joint household  of  my AmuMama & GunvantMama on Duke Street in Nairobi – and then walking from there to the Royal College precinct.   I was also provided an allowance of   30 shillings per month by my AmuMama – with so much love and care.     During third year,   I moved to the Hostel attached to the Royal College. After my graduation   and my work career , my AmuMama remained my best friend and support in  case of any need – like transportation etc. Well he was such helpful person for anyone who needed his help  – with cheerful smile and witty conversation on his lips.

We – I   will miss you a lot but then you are always in my heart.

Here is a small POEM I offer to my AmuMama:

12 July 2017

Oh! my AmuMama ( My uncle )

A spark quality

ignites others for great things

like an extinguished spark he passes away

But leaves all the crackles of happiness

AmuMama remained a strength

to many a family members and friends

like a pole supporting vines

He gave all he can with humility

For me AmuMama was a saviour

like a proverbial angle in the heaven

His holding hand of a 16 year old

was a brightness in the Youngman’s life

AmuMama is epitome of service

Humility, politeness, respect

His smiles and jokes were radiant

spreading joy and cheers to all

My AmuMama, My hero

You held hand when most needed

You were a doting grandfather

We will miss you to eternity

We pray that your soul is blessed

We pray that you have a seat in heaven

We pray that you join eternity with happiness

We pray for your scent of humility and service

Your loving nephew – who misses you so much.

AmuMama passed away in Nairobi , Kenya on Monday 10 July 2017

age – 85 years.

Today being Canada Day and celebrating Canada’s 150th Anniversary – Mistry family ( kids and parents) came over to Deep River to participate in the celebration – normally/traditionally nana/nani go over there to Mackey to celebrate the Canada Day but this year nana’s POEM titled O! Canada was being recited by the Mayor of Deep River at the Campus in Deep River as part of the celebration.   So both Sitara and Sachin were thrilled – the day was fabulous and the parade to the campus delightful.

Here is what Nina posted on her Facebook ( 02 July 2017) – with a photo of the stage where the Mayor recited the Poem.:

” Dad and Mom on stage while The Mayor of Deep River reads Dads poem for Canada Day 150 at the Canada Day Opening Ceremonies Saturday July 1, 2017 ”

After lunch -all decided to go to Mackey to join in the fun there (at the Old Mackey Park on Jennings Rd.) -the weather has become soggy – a drizzle was on.   After some time at the Park ( where the kids and nana joined in playing BINGO under a tent)   – all went to Mistry home and had dinner there – celebrating Canada Day by cutting a well decorated (in Canada flag motif) cake by nani.   Kids played with nana and nani ( separately)   different game – from treasure hunt to card and video games. At about 9.00 p.m all decided to go back to Deep River to enjoy the fireworks display at the campus (along Ottawa River).
Of course Mistrys in their car and nana/nani in theirs.     After the display, Mistrys went back to Mackey at about 10.30 p.m.

Sunday   02 July 2017

All three kids (Maya, Kieran and Priya) returned from the cottage (their grandparents) -driven back by the parents.

Wednesday 05 July 2017

Lemonade Stand

It is an entrepreneurial day . Both Maya and Kieran have established a Lemonade Stand outside their home in Toronto. Price for a glass of Lemonade is 50c.   Priya is sitting behind under a tree – keeping a watch .

Their mom sent an e-mail (dated 05 July 2017) to family members to that effect (announcing the opening of the lemonade stand) – see below:

” Maya and Kieran had a successful lemonade stand today. Here they are sampling the product, while Priya observes in the background. She was a good marketing prop ”

This day Sachin goes for 3 day camping at the Camp Lau-Ren’s for 3 days. His mom and Sitara dropped him (in the morning at 10.00 am) at the camp – while nana/nani went from Deep River to Camp Lau-ren -also to cheer him for his venture. His dad could not go as he was working.   Sachin was all smiling, happy to be at the camp.
Note:   Camp Lau-Ren ”” a summer camp for children aged 6-16.   Canoeing, archery, swimming, life study, crafts, sports, campfires are a few of the popular activities that take place during the week.

Sachin will be picked up (to come home) on Saturday -at about 10 am and Mistry family will then come over to Deep River at nana/nani home. This is the day – it is planned to celebrate both kids birthday (Sachin turning over to 8th on 20 July and Sitara turning over to 10th on 5th August) – celebration here in Deep River a bit early as they are going away (travelling to U.K)   on a visit to their Ba and family in U.K.
Saturday 08 July 2017
Sachin was picked up from the Camp Lau-ren by his parents (and Sitara) – and after having a hair-cut in Deep river,   he came over to nana/nani home along with family – all had lunch. The kids spent the afternoon with nana/nani while parents went to Pembroke for the last minute shopping before going overseas. After parents came back from shopping , all had dinner with nana/nani -and after that the family celebrated two birthdays ( a bit early but as the family was to go overseas – the kids birthdays will be celebrated this year in UK) and thus nana/nani organized the birthdays. There were to cakes                                 ( ordered from Valumart – local Grocer ) a pink for Sitara with the inscription   “Happy 10th – Sitara ” and a blue one for Sachin with the inscription   “Happy 8th – Sachin ” . Also nani made a Cherry pie (a request by Sitara) . All had fun. After the cake cutting and eating the goodies   – all settled down in the living room where nana/nani gave each kid their birthday cards and gift . They liked the poems nana wrote for celebrating their birthday . Also the gift of LED spinner – which is   a rage with school kids these days.
When Sachin hugged nana so deeply   – nana mentioned that he is a special boy to nana -he responded immediately to me saying “you are a very special nana”.         So much love and care.

Mistry family drove to Ottawa in rental car   ( a minivan) to travel to U.K . They will be boarding a plane at Ottawa Airport –     then fly to Toronto to catch the international flight at Toronto Airport – to fly to Manchester in U.K.
They stopped over at nana/nani home for a few minutes – dropping Sitara and Sachin’s stuffedanimals =- for nana/nani to take care of them while they are away.   Sitara’s big bear called   ” Bear Bear” has parked itself on the sofa in the nana/nani living room – Sachin small stuffed animal is being looked after by Bear Bear. So now they cannot get lonely at all

Ba phoned Toronto to say hi to kids there. But they were in car – going to a campsite at Georgian Bay, Muskoka , Ontario.   Muskoka boasts some of the most sought after camping in Ontario, and even in the country. Maya and Kieran had   a long conversation with Ba – Kieran professing his love for Ba with a long musical sentence.
After returning back in Toronto – they were heading back to the cottage .   See below:
An e-mail from Maya’s mom dated   Tuesday 18 July 2017

” I hope you are doing well. It must be quiet without Nina and family around. We would love to see you, but we are heading up to the cottage on Saturday to start a week-long visit with my parents, sisters and all the kids. Erika, Mathieu and Julia just arrived from Switzerland yesterday.

Would you be able to come tomorrow and stay until Saturday when we go up north? Otherwise we will be back from the cottage on August 7 (Maya’s birthday!) and will be in the city until August 11, so we would love to have you stay with us that week. ”

Let me know!

Today is Sachin’s birthday. He is celebrating it this year in U.K. – Rubgy . It’s also his Grandma’s   ( Ba – Sunjay’s mom) ) birthday too .   This is the second time Sachin had opportunity to have his birthday celebrated in U.K.   The first one was when he was   only 1 year   old.
From the phone call – it was understood that they all went out to see castles etc. during the day. Sachin was all excited because he got   a camera as a gift for his birthday – from his parents. He is taking many photos of the places that he visits with his sister and family .

Wednesday 02 August 2017

The kids – Sitara and Sachin are having a great time in U. K. – being driven or taken by their parents to see relatives – have a birthday party at Ba’s home (on July 20) , visit places of interests.   They also have been on the tube (what we call here subway) in London.

Amongst places in U.K. they have visited are:

Today is Sitara’s 10th birthday , She is in England at her Ba’s home – along with Sachin (her brother) and their parents . They celebrated Sitara’s birthday with a bang at her Ba’s place.   Sitara decorated her birthday cake – so beautiful – she has learnt the art of decorating cakes now . Her Aunt Bhadrika and Magical Uncle along with her cousin Yasmin also were present at the party. Sachin had a great time – specially he got an opportunity to play with his Magical uncle in the yard – looking for Pokémons

Monday 07 August 2017

Kids are expected to arrive from England – landing at Ottawa Airport at 6.15 pm
Today is Maya’s 6th birthday. She will celebrate the occasion at the cottage     ( her grandpa’s cottage in Muskoka) – where she will be with her Aunt Heather, Ryan uncle   and their son Cole (Maya’s cousin brother ) , also with her Aunt Erica, Matthews uncle and their daughter Julia ( Maya’s cousin sister) plus with her grandpa and grandma (maternal) along with her dad, her brother Kieran and baby sister Priya.
It is also a Civic Holiday in Canada.
So Sitara and Sachin returned from England with their parents – flew to Ottawa Airport by Air Canada and stopped over at Deep River at nana/nani home for a few minutes   (just about 11.00 pm) – to pick up some groceries and their garage   opener. After that they proceeded to Mackey – for rest and recuperate from exhaustive trip to England. They had a great time and enjoyed their journey.

Saturday 12 August 2017

This day was an open house at CNL in Chalk River – where Sitara/sachin’s dad works . There was so much to see.   Both Sitara and Sachin went to the plant site with their parents – and saw so many varieties of scientific work (experiments / demonstrations etc) . Nana/nani also went separately   but both kids were happy to see their nana/nani/ Nana explaned that he was also working there at CNL (AECL) -and retired in 2007 – the year Sitara was born.

Sunday   13 August 2017

To-day Sitara was driven towards Toronto (by her parents & Sachin) to meet with her SunirMama/ShannonMami (and cousins) half way between Mackey and Toronto. Sitara is going to spend a week in Toronto with her cousins & family. When at Toronto she will also go and participate in a day Science camp.
This is what Sitara’s mom posted on her Facebook wall:
” Yin and Yang. Sad to drop Sitara off but know she will have the best time with her cousins and family in Toronto for a week. And it is such a gorgeous day for drive stopping at all the stops along the way eating and buying fresh treats.”
Note: Maya, Kieran and Priya had gone for camping during the weekend with their parents .

Here is what Shannon ( Sitara’s Mami) sent by e-mail dated 14   August:

Hi all,

We are having a great time so far with Sitara. Here are a couple photos from yesterday on our drive home. I was too busy playing with the 4 kids in the pool to take any photos at the wedding pool party last night, but we all had fun! Most of my extended family members hadn’t seen Sitara since our wedding, when she was only 1 year old! Sitara had butter tarts for the first time last night and professed them to be delicious   She slept well and Sunir will be taking her to camp soon.

Hope you all have a wonderful day!

Shannon

Monday 14 August 2017

Sitara spent one day at the Computer Day camp in Toronto.   Also great time with her cousins there.

Well Sachin felt lonely being all alone at home – now Sitara had disappeared to Toronto for   a week. So nana/nani went to Mackey in the evening – to spend time with him . Nana brought him gift of two Pokemon cartoon books – Sachin was very happy. After sometime , all went outdoors – for Sachin wanted to ride a bike- he still learning it but getting there. All had fun – and Sitara and cousins called (helped by Sunir/Shannon) from Toronto on   “skype” so everyone had a time to talk with each other.
Tuesday 15 August 2017
Here is what Maya’s mom sent by e-mail dated 15 August 2017:

Photo Updates   (sent two photos with the e-mail)
“Here is the boat dollhouse Sitara and Maya made, as well as Sitara and Priya at the park yesterday. Today Sunir took Sitara and Maya to Chinatown for the afternoon (no photos because the camera on his phone is broken, but Sitara took some she can show you). Tomorrow afternoon I am taking the 4 kids to the zoo and splash pad. It’s been a busy, fun week so far! “

Friday 18 August 2017

To-day Sitara’s mom, dad & little brother (Sachin) will drive from Mackey to Toronto and stay with   SunirMama/ShannonMami   & Sitara/Sachin’s cousins Maya, Kieran and Priya – and then all of them will return to Mackey on Sunday – with Sitara returning to Mackey after spending a successful week in Toronto with her cousins and also attending Computer Science day camp for a week . This also gives opportunity to Sachin to enjoy his sister and cousins for the weekend being together.

Saturday 19 August 2017

So the kids -all of them -five grandchildren – had lovely time together at the Centre Island in Toronto- being shepherded (driven) there by Shannon/Sunir and Nina/ Sunjay.

ShannonMami sent the follwing e-mail (on the same day)

” Here are some photos from today’s trip to Centre Island.”

Even Priya participated in all activities there – including sitting on the horse of musical ride.

Monday 21 August 2017

Today , Sitara came early to her nana/nnai home in Deep River – dropped by her dad   . Her mom was going with Sachin to his ice hockey match in the neighboring town of Petawawa.   BothSachin and hisn mom came to nana/nani home just after 1.00 pm . After that both kids helped their mom to make   a pin-hole viewer (from a cereal box) to watch the sun’s eclipse which happened at Deep River at about

2.27 pm . It was very exciting -both kids, their mom and nana/nani observed the eclipse – though sun was getting covered with clouds -on and off.

After the sun’s eclipse , Nina helped nana/nani to pack luggage to go to London tomorrow – Tuesday 22 August 2017. Now nana/nani will be going to UK for about 4 weeks –   both Sitara and Sachin have just been back from a visit to UK with their parents .

Tuesday 19 September 2017

nana/nani returned back from London, UK – by AC889 flight from Heathrow Airport in London to Ottawa. Nina was waiting to welcome her parents . She hugged both parents and then we all drove away to go to Deep River. On the way , she stopped over at T & T Supermarket ( A Chinese grocery store) for some supplies – so nana got an opportunity to   obtain some ” Chinese Dried Plums ” packets.

Apparently these dried plums help the digestive system. Nana had tried these in London (recommended by his cousin Atul ) and seem to have worked.

——————–

During the time when grandparents ( nana/nani to Sitara & Sachin and Bapuji/Ba to Maya, Kieran & Priya) were visiting London, U.K. – the following happened as heard from kids’ parents once in a while.

Priya is growing up to be one year old soon. She is standing up by herself – albeit holding a sofa edge . She has few teeth ( I think there are 4 teeth alraedy)- front ones and a big smile – always.

Kieran has moved on to a Pre-school (Pre KG) school -at least a couple of days in week and the remainder 3 days of the week he still spends at the daycare.

Maya is now (this year starting in September 2017) in Grade 1 . It is interesting to her (and of course to all of us) that there are 3 girls this year in her class named ” Maya “.   Maya however exclaims to her mom/dad   ” So far it’s been very good in the school “. What a girl! Gives us joy.

Sachin is now in Grade 3 and Sitara has moved on to Grade 5 this year (starting in September 2017).

Wednesday 20 September 2017

Both Sitara and Sachin came over after school ( brought over by their dad – as Nina was working this day at IDA store in Deep River) and both were excited to see nana/nani – hugged them and then settled down a bit before dinner. They had dinner here at nana/nani home   – as Sitara had swimming session while Sachin relaxed before being picked up by his dad to go to Mackey. Note: Sitara walked to IDA store after her swimming session to be with her mom – and then go home to Mackey when IDA store closed.

Thursday 28 September 2017

Both kids were dropped in the morning by their dad at nana/nani   home – after breakfast and a bit relaxation – nana/nani drive them to school at 9:15 am. Nina is working in Pembroke this day .   Note: this was a repeat of yesterday   – Wednesday 27 September 2017.

Sitara had a walkathon in Deep River at 10.00 am – passed over Rutherford Av. at about 10:30 am   – greeted by nani (waiting to cheer her and her classmates . Nana also joined in to cheer her.

In the evening the kids had an open house   at the school   (Mackenzie Community School) – starting at 6:15 pm . Both nana/nani went to the open house.

Deep River 150 – Why I love Canada …..

Canadian immigration story   – Story of Acceptance and Integration

For me to love Canada is not the issue to ponder – as there are a range of reasons to love Canada     Oh! we love you Canada – from our heart and soul.

I consider myself as most fortunate for having spent greater part of my life in this beautiful land Canada.

My wife and I emigrated to Canada in 1974 – on 03 March 1974 to be precise — having travelled by air (from Nairobi, Kenya) and landing in Toronto – which was just getting out of winter season. It was bright and sunny day and having a friend at the airport to welcome us which brightened our arrival.

Ours is a heartwarming and touching experience of immigration and settling down in Canada. We were fortunate to have a friend in Toronto (who had migrated to Canada from Kenya a few years before we did) and thus it made a bit easier – especially for my wife to come to a new country.

It so happened I already had a previous stay in Canada for one year. I had spent one year (June 1965- June 1966) in Niagara Falls, Ontario   having come on a Fellowship from the Food Agriculture Organization (F.A.O) of   the United Nations   for practical training (with Acres Consulting Services) in the design of hydraulic structures (hydro power and drainage/irrigation projects). In a way, I had previous experience of all four seasons of Canada   including winter months (with some skating, skiing and driving car on icy roads) – so I was not so   perturbed when emigrating to Canada. Well my wife was a bit worried about winter but comforted by the knowledge that we have had a friend in Toronto. She also was aware of my acquaintances in Niagara Falls, Ontario from my previous stay in Canada.   So the first step to our new home was somewhat comfortably made.

One of the difficulties that we had when emigrating from Kenya (in those days) was very little foreign exchange was allowed for the people travelling abroad. So we had very meager funds for our                     sustenance   but we took a chance to emigrate – hoping to obtain employment as soon we arrived in Toronto.   My wife was a   teacher for high school kids in Kenya and thus had abilities also to fit in with some opportunities.

It was difficult for the first couple of weeks – while getting a bit orientated and then looking for work so we can support ourselves.   As we say – we got a break (someone always looking after us in life) – we made a social visit to meet and say Hi! to one of our old acquaintances (from my previous stay in Niagara Falls) – who was in their office in Toronto and somehow it culminated in my getting   a job (professional) with Acres Consulting Services in Niagara Falls. Thus our roots in the country were established.

Our stay in Niagara Falls, Ontario was just thrilling but also very hectic with many activities – from settling down to becoming part of the new social milieu and Lo Behold!   starting a family.

My family is so besotted to Canada as here we started our family. This is like an experience   of a miracle. My wife and I were married in 1967 in Nairobi, Kenya and for a while we remained without any children – even after trying various medical interventions.   Lo Behold ! after we arrived in Canada on 03 March 1974 and the first medical specialist we established ( in April 1974 in Niagara Falls, Ontario)   came with the unbelievable news that a baby is on the way.   It was difficult to believe and in fact our extended family in Kenya did not believe it till they saw the tell-tale photos.   We are so fortunate that our daughter was born on 14 December 1974   – 9 months and few days after our arrival in Canada. We then were fortunate to have a son after 4 years – to have someone for my daughter to play with . Both   kids were born in Niagara Falls . Now we are fortunate to have a total of five (5) grandchildren who keep us young and active. They are into swimming, skating,   skiing and play ice hockey (besides art, music and class work) – all Canadian.     Love you Canada!

My assimilation in Canada was from the beginning   – my professional life was similar to what I was doing in Kenya. My wife and I were accepted and made welcome in many community activities that we participated in Niagara Falls and other places that we moved over the years. We made friends who became   ” our families ” and who loved our children when they grew up.   Oh! Canada   – what warmth and acceptance.   Love you Canada!

Those who know Niagara Falls – know it for the big waterfalls here and also as a honeymoon capital of North America but there is more to see and understand about Canada here. The city is replete with different kinds of bridges ( vertical lift, suspension and other types   ) -many built in late 1800s over Welland   Canal and over Niagara River connecting to USA. The Welland Canal is a ship canal connecting  Lake Ontario and lake Erie. The Canal boasts many lock gates – which  enables ships to ascend and descend the Niagara Escarpment and bypass Niagara Falls. Many built in late 1800s or early 1900s.

There is so much to study and learn about the marvel of engineering, technology and construction methodology   applied by early pioneers and their perseverance and tenacity under very trying conditions .

This country is exceptional and for that we need to thank the pioneers – the early ones who suffered all kinds of winters/weather, vast distances and lack of facilities and yet persevered and stood fast to build this modern country from coast to coast.   There is so much to love about Canada – the pioneers take the cake.

My wife and I found Niagara Falls becoming our home almost immediately after moving there in early April 1974.   We had friends here from my previous stay (June 1965-June 1966 ) and more from my colleagues at work as well as from our community work that we participated. In fact I became the Chair of the local United Nations Association Chapter in Niagara Falls – which kept us active socially. My wife was embraced like a daughter by quite a few local Canadian families and thus was able to ward of loneliness (complicated by being pregnant in a foreign land)   –   being away from our extended family in Kenya.   We also learnt Canadian pastime of picking berries from the farms around Niagara Falls and my wife learnt preserving these (making jams and jellies) besides   making pancakes and enjoying maple syrup. We being vegetarian – kept away from hot dogs and hamburgers though not from French fries.

As part the United Nations Association Chapter activities – we had Hon. Flora MacDonald (M.P.) come over as chief guest one year.

We also   established a prayer temple during September 1974 in our home in Niagara Falls and were holding prayer services once a month. The central theme of the services was primarily ” prayers for peace “.   Many   people participated in this unique assembly   and prayed together for peace in the world – as peace is paramount for progress and for development of dignified living with interplay across different societies in the world.   We were privileged to have Hon. Roger Young (M.P.) as the chief speaker at one of the prayers. Unfortunately the temple had to be wound down during August 1975 due to our   relocation to Montreal.

We love Canada for the Canadian character of openness with embrace and hearty support of diverse activities without prejudice.

I have to travel sometime due to work related responsibilities, at one time (1979) I was in Sri Lanka for a few days (on assignment for engineering work on an irrigation project there), my wife remaining behind in Niagara Falls with our daughter and expecting another child.   Our ” new extended family ” were just fabulous who kept family vigilance over my   wife and daughter – without an iota of intruding.   We love Canada for such warmth and care.

The engineering work means we have to move sometime to new locations – so we ended up in Montreal (during 1975) for a hydro project   ( Churchill Falls Gull Island Hydro Project ) which was supposed to last at least for five years – if not more.   So we sold our house in Niagara Falls and bought another house ( in a new development) in Laval, Quebec   – while working in downtown Montreal.   Then suddenly the project was cancelled (the funds for the project were withdrawn) and we had to move back to Niagara Falls – having lived in the house for only a few months. Unfortunately the housing market in Quebec collapsed at the election of Rene Lévesque as Première of Quebec -who had promised for referendum for separation of Quebec .   It became difficult to sell the house .   However, my Niagara Falls employer took care of the expenses (while the house was empty) without quibble and thus made our life a bit easier.   Love you Canada for fair minded employer.

Montreal City is fabulous – it is vibrant and full of colour and activities. We liked the old town – bought a few paintings from the artists there. The city would have been top in Canada except its progress was curtailed after the Independence Referendum call and the French language primacy in the province.

English /French politics and kind of rejection felt by French by the English speaking Canada – which led to independence movement under Rene Levesque – PM Pierre Trudeau fought the dilemma passionately and came up with best solution- which defeated the referendum   – and now the country is well balanced and pleasant to live . He remains (in my mind) the best Prime Minister of Canada. I believe that without Pierre Trudeau, we would not have, today, a Canada from coast to coast to coast.

Most of the differences within the country – religious   (Protestant vs Catholics) or political polemics                   ( French vs English ) have been tackled over the years in a democratic dialogue and fair play.  Love you Canada for democracy and fair play.

After   about a year from returning to Niagara Falls , we were back to Montreal on assignment during late 1976 for the design of Wolsung1 – Candu nuclear power station in South Korea;   Acres Consulting Services joining with Canatom as Design Consultants to Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd. (AECL). This is when I got to know and interface with personnel from AECL.

We moved into our vacant house in Laval.

I vaguely remember the snow storm that hit the area in the early 1977 ( I think it was Friday January 28 )- anyway it took more than 4 hours by train ( which normally takes 1 hour ) from   Bonaventure Metro (in downtown Montreal) to Sainte-Catherine – from where I have to walk about 10 minutes to my house.   When the train arrived at the station, it was dark and windy. When I got off the train I found myself alone trying to walk towards my home in pitch dark and high winds. It was an instant when I started questioning as to   what I am doing in this country but then a miracle happened – I saw a head with dark hair at about 100 feet ahead of me. This instantly removed my loneliness and I managed to trundle to my house (albeit slow) . However when I arrived at the house, I found the driveway was full of snow – some 3 feet high and also the patio door was jammed with ice. As I could not get to the front door, I had to shovel the snow from the driveway and help the wife to thaw the patio door before I could settle down and play with my 1 year old daughter -who had been waiting anxiously for daddy to return from work.

It was a momentous time for the family in Montreal . We managed to sell the house after staying in it for about a year and half and then moved into a rented apartment in Pierrefonds area of Montreal. We enjoyed the vibrancy of life in both Laval and Montreal as well as Quebec City and the Mont-Tremblant area.

One pleasant memory of that time is the fragrance and quality of egg breads and rum cakes that we used to get from a Jewish Bakery in Laval –   that would melt in your mouth . Believe it or not, after we left Montreal in 1979 – whenever we go back to Quebec for a visit , we would invariably go to that bakery in Laval and bring back few egg breads and rum cakes home.   What fun! We love you Canada.

We returned back to Niagara Falls in early 1979 . We are now done with living or working in Montreal. After that I worked on miscellaneous assignments  with Acres Consulting Services . One of the assignments was in Calgary area for a few weeks during summer 1980. That was quite an experience in Canadian living   – where people go by plane for trout fishing and barbecuing afterwards. I got invited to a couple of these barbecues – though I do not eat fish but the camaraderie was exhilarating.   Calgary people are very friendly – even the waiters there are more friendlier than anywhere in Canada or the world. I know because I have been to most parts of Canada and also many countries in the world.

I must not forget the Stampede – all the hullabaloo   around it . I got myself a cowboy hat (a city boy and not quite fitting in the style).   The Calgary Stampede is an annual rodeo and festival held every July . Wow! such fun! Only in Canada.

While we are reminiscing my sojourn in Calgary (Alberta) – it does remind me of some important historical fact. Tommy Douglas in Saskatchewan floated the Medicare in 1962 but then in 1950   Alberta’s Social Credit Party also introduced a public health care plan – which became a harbinger for the Canadian Universal Health Plan.

While it is difficult to talk about all the reasons why we love Canada —   I will mention one which is significant . We Canadians are so fortunate   – we have one of the most effective, professional and dedicated Health Service in the whole wide world .   For that we are very grateful, Canada . We love Canada immensely .

My career changed in 1981 – I joined AECL in their CANDU division   (in Toronto ).   So now we moved from Niagara Falls to Mississauga   (Toronto area) where we bought a house – not far away from Sheridan Park – where AECL offices were located. This was the time when interest rates were high and most people were struggling to get mortgage paid and keep the living expenses in check.

While in Toronto area – one remembers the downtown and the Eaton Centre. The traffic and noise is there along with all the excitement of living in a large metropolitan city. I remember Chuck   e Cheese restaurant   – ” where a kid can be   a kid “. Our kids used to enjoy their time there . I do not remember when we stopped going there but all in all we had good times.

On social note,   I became the President of the Jain Society of Toronto in 1985.   During that time , the dark incident of Air India (Flight 182) happened. The bombing of an Air India flight from Toronto to Bombay on 23 June 1985 ”” killing all 329 people on board ”” remains Canada”™s deadliest terrorist attack. The incident was the largest mass murder in Canadian history, and the deadliest incident in the history of Air India.

The   Canadian Authority at the time were shocked but made a ” faux pas “.   Brian Mulroney   was   the Prime Minister of Canada at the time.  When conveying shock and condolences to India for the death of hundreds of people, the tone of wording implied that the Government of Canada had assumed most of them were of Indian citizenship. In fact most were Canadian citizens – though of Indian origin.   Many people were surprised by the Canadian statement .  I (as the President of the Jain Society) got an opportunity to comment about the tragedy on the CBC radio and I pointed out this   ” faux pas ” and our dismay. My comment was reiterated a couple of days on CBC. For whatever reason the Government of Canada corrected the situation subsequently when all realized that the tragedy is impacting Canada more than India.

It should be noted that in earlier years when racial abuse was so prevalent around the world – this country (Canada) opened and welcomed and assimilated many Americans of African descent – gave them dignity like no other country in the world would dare or think of. As recent as a few months ago Canada again excelled in its intrinsic value and welcomed Syrian refugees with love and respect. This humanitarian action at appropriate time by Canada is very telling. This is why we love Canada.

Prior to our move to Deep River, in 1986   there was this burst of entrepreneurial energy which motivated my wife to get into owning and running a Convenience Store business in Hamilton (on Wellington Street) for a year (1985 – 1986) – which was then sold off when moving to Deep River. That year our family moved to Hamilton   – for kids schooling and parental guidance. Our daughter   (11 years old) became familiar with Hamilton city and use of its transportation system.

A great change was effected in my career and in our family’s lifestyle in 1986 when we moved to Deep River – with my taking up a position with Chalk River Nuclear Laboratories. Initially, this move did not meet with family’s unanimous approval as it was a move away to a smaller community but over the years Deep River grew in great esteem by all in the family. There was also one more hic-cup in accepting Deep River as a pleasant place for residing – and that was the existence of swarms of black flies and bugs .This situation has not improved but there is more tolerance and acceptance of this nature -induced phenomena and the family members have learnt to accept this as normal in the general Deep River lifestyle.

One of the advantages that the family experienced is the stability it provided in our daily life. The possibility of frequent move to different town by me on a work assignment (with my previous employment in Niagara Falls) ended and we remained anchored in Deep River – which gave my kids   constant and consistence environment for establishment of friends   – rather than having to change to new friends when we move to another city.

Our both kids went through school system in Deep River and when they finished their high school                         ( Mackenzie High) – each went away to pursue further studies at Universities of his/her choice. Now they are active participants in the economic development of Canada .

While in Deep River – the family took a trip in the summer of 1989 to all provinces west – to British Columbia in our family car on the Trans-Canada Highway. It took almost a couple of weeks to arrive at Vancouver as we made stops at all the provinces in between. At Thunder Bay we visited Kakabeka Falls. The falls is known as the “Niagara of the North ” for its similarity to Niagara Falls . On the way the kids collected box full of different types of rocks such as Amethyst – learning something about Canadian geology.   There was also this thrill of having the view of Lake Superior.   Alberta provided the greatest fun – like having picnic at the Rockies and enjoying the thrill of the Calgary Stampede. Manitoba and Saskatchewan Province  were   resplendent with prairies . The prairies in Canada refers to temperate   grasslands.  We stopped to visit friends at Pinawa (near Winnipeg)   who were working at AECL (The Whiteshell Laboratories ) . This laboratory is now closed down . In 1998, AECL decided to close Whiteshell Laboratories. Vancouver and Victoria were pleasant cities to visit . Victoria is a city known for its wonderful gardens. The return journey back to Deep River took some 4 days .

Discovery of Canada trip did not end only going west.   The family embarked on a road trip during summer of 1991 to the east up to Prince Edwards Island in our family car. We followed the Trans-Canada highway east towards Fredericton.

Our visit to Montreal and Quebec City brought back our memories when we had earlier stayed at Montreal.   Kids loved and enjoyed the horse-drawn carriage ride in Quebec City.

Next New Brunswick (Fredericton) – then Nova Scotia (Halifax) – then Prince Edwards Island (Charlottetown) and finally Newfoundland  (St. John’s ) and Labrador (we did not do Labrador).

There is also Saint John, a port city of the Bay of Fundy in New Brunswick. The Bay of Fundy is known for having the world’s highest tides, and also a population of whales.

Amongst many touristy things, we went to Peggy’s Cove (Nova Scotia) , did Magnetic Hill (near Moncton, New Brunswick) , went to Army Museum Halifax Citadel and visited the Lucy Maud Montgomery Cavendish Home on Prince Edwards Island   – where she wrote the novel Anne of Green Gables.

After we returned from the east, my wife thought of exercising her entrepreneurial spirit again and we bought a business (in the fall of 1991) in Petawawa   (our neighborly town – where a Canadian Forces Base is located). The business was wound up in the year 1999.

My kids have found partners of their choice , they are married and we are pleasantly the grandparents to five (5) grandchildren – two (2) of them are here near us and three (3) are in Toronto.

The grandkids are enjoying Canadian lifestyle . They are into swimming, skating, skiing and play ice hockey (besides art, music and class work).     Love you Canada!

As I had mentioned earlier this flowering of our family is a gift (with our emigration to Canada) that we cherish very deeply and which blossoms our love for Canada immeasurably.

Deep River has provided us many openings /possibilities ( similar to when we were in Niagara Falls &Toronto) to participate in the community activities.  I have fond memories of my time with Deep River Police Service Board, Deep River Hospital Board, Community Liaison Group for Port Hope Waste, Ontario Professional Engineers   -local Chapter , local bridge (card game) groups amongst others.

As we are celebrating 150th anniversary of Canadian Confederation , I am proud  to be a Canadian from since some 43 years ago – and my wife and I celebrated this year our 50th Wedding anniversary on Saturday 27 May here in Canada – with both of our kids   & their spouses along with all 5 grandchildren – participating in the Tamarack Ottawa Race in Ottawa – along with thousands.

We are here in Canada, with its breathtaking beauty, concern for others, and pride in its diversity.

Thank you Canada for our acceptance and loving integration in the Canadian milieu.

We wish the best for the 150th Anniversary of Canadian Confederation.

Deep River 150 – Why I love Canada …..

For me to love Canada is not the issue to ponder – as there are a range of reasons to love Canada     Oh! we love you Canada – from our heart and soul.

This country is exceptional and for that we need to thank the pioneers – the early ones who suffered all kinds of winters/weather, vast distances and lack of facilities and yet persevered and stood fast to build this modern country from coast to coast.

Most of the differences within the country – religious   (Protestant vs Catholics) or political polemics                  ( French vs English ) have been tackled over the years in a democratic dialogue and fair play.

In early years when racial abuse was so prevalent around the world – this country opened and welcomed and assimilated many Americans of African descent – gave them dignity like no other country in the world would dare or think of.   As recent as a few months ago Canada again excelled in its intrinsic value and welcomed Syrian refugees with love and respect.

While it is difficult to talk about all the reasons why we love Canada —   I will mention one which is significant . We Canadians are so fortunate   – we have one of the most effective, professional and dedicated Health Service in the whole wide world .   For that we are very grateful, Canada . We love Canada immensely .

NRT – article : Oversight or Incompetenacy

The following article was published in the local newspaper – North Renfrew times (NRT) – on Wednesday   24   May 2017

 Oversight or   Incompetenacy

19 May 2017

Near Surface Disposal Facility (NSDF)   – proposed by CNL   – extension of time for public comment.

So the time period for submission of public comments on the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) has now been extended to who knows what date. Initially it was to be by deadline of 17 May 2017.

The EIS document is submitted for approval to Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC ) by Golders Associates — on behalf of the Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) – for the development of a Near Surface Disposal Facility (NSDF) at Chalk River Laboratories site.

I have had already made my submission of comments (electronically) on the draft EIS document some time back – keeping within the initial deadline announced.

As I understand that this extension period is required due to the need for having the draft EIS document translated into our second Canadian official language (French) – and not because of the request made by the Deep River Council or area citizens for such an extension.

A revised notice will be issued once the translated version of the EIS is available, and CNSC will provide further details on the dates of the public comment period.

Okay – so that is understandable that the document needs to be in both official languages but what is not comprehended is as to why the CNSC did not know about this need at the beginning. It is a simple rule – known by the Canadian   establishment for a long time.   Does it indicate some gap in competency of our Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC)? or was it just an oversight! and not a fumble by the CNSC.

Thus it may pose a question !!   If the CNSC cannot carry out this simple administrative requirement (of having the document in our two official languages) at an early stage   of the process – how to get confidence/assurance  that the Regulatory Body will have professional ability and competence to look at myriad of complex technical, societal and environmental issues related to the development of such an important disposal facility.

While I am fully in favour, in principle, for the development of such a facility at the Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) site, it behooves on the Regulator to assure the public that the proposed development meets the   whole spectrum of safety requirements – and as reviewed by renowned/competent/professional experts.

The devil is in the details.

One Way to beat Winter blues ? Bridge Card Playing – sent to NRT for publication on 31 March 2017

The following article was sent to North Renfrew Times for publication on 31 March 2017 – under the column of ” Letter To Editor “. Unfortunately it did not get published by the NRT – though I had separately circulated it all my bridge colleagues in Deep River, Pembroke, Petawawa and in Toronto too. Got good response from many.

One Way to beat Winter blues ?   Bridge Card Playing

Do you experience the “blues” or low mood during the winter months?

In our land of many seasons , during our harsh winter months  many outdoor team/group activities are suddenly terminated at the onset of winter.   Though some people do take up winter sports and enjoy these activities.

However, there are many people who either  ” hibernate ” indoors with minimal social activities                              ( resulting in social isolation ) or move out to sunny places south – specially to Florida.   The winter sports are usually not quite suitable for elderly/senior people.

Again as the winter is slowly moving out, many people are gearing up for outdoor activities and winter sports do come to a halt.

However  there is one activity which remains constant during all of our seasons – including during winter.

This activity is Bridge Card playing . It’s a   sport which requires a lot of social interaction and this relation with community members remain steady all year round. There is no automatic disruption in playing due to seasonal changes. The local bridge club (s) in the area remain active all year round .

This allows those playing bridge to come out of social isolation during winter and interact with many community members in a relaxed but otherwise challenging activity. It does help to beat Winter blues.

By the way, playing Bridge is termed as participating in a sport activity . In June 1995, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) admitted the World Bridge Federation (WBF) as ‘part of the Olympic Movement’, awarding it the status of a ‘Recognized Sport Organization’.

This recognition was accorded under  Rule 4  of the Olympic Charter.

However so far, Bridge has reached the same level as Golf, Rugby, Squash, Karate etc. which, though recognized as sports, are not yet admitted into the Olympic Games.

Bridge is one of the most popular card games in the world, so there must be some FUN to it!

Those who play bridge will tell you that :

  • ·                 Bridge requires strategic game play – which keeps memory active, the brain alert, and the body healthier.
  • Bridge enhances social life and nurtures partnerships ”“ keys to healthy aging.
  • Bridge   beats   Boredom.
  • One can with a few friends at home, or via a club or tournament or play it online.
  • Bridge requires logic – mathematics and counting – which exercise the brain.
  • Bridge requires concentration and while you are playing your brain is kept active and stimulated.
  • Bridge has such a positive effect on the longevity and quality of life of Seniors.

The bridge makes it possible for the players to relate as well as to communicate with local community members on a regular basis. Friendships are born and developed for life time.

When playing on-line on computer the players are associated with diverse groups of people from all continents – from rich and poor countries and that makes one realize how all human beings have common instincts, intellect and gracefulness.

Bridge is more complicated than other card games, and beginners are sometimes discouraged by this.    Relax!

Bridge is by far the greatest card game of all, and it can provide immense challenge and enjoyment for the rest of your life.

Bridge is a partnership game requiring four players. Each player sits opposite his partner at a card table (in this age of computers the concept could be a simulated).

Bridge is played with a standard deck of 52 playing cards. One of the players deals all of the cards, 13 to each player, in clockwise rotation, beginning with the player to the left of the dealer.

Here is the gem :

Has anyone ever heard of or read about how playing cards match up with our calendar?

The numbers and values in a deck of cards are very similar to the weeks and months of a modern calendar. Is this just a coincidence, or was this relationship intended? A complete deck of playing cards contains four suits, two primary colors, and thirteen values ranging from the Ace to the King. Usually, it contains two Jokers.

There are 52 weeks in the year and 52 playing cards…

There are 13 weeks in each season and there are also 13 cards in each suit.

There are 4 seasons and 4 suits.

There are 12 months of the year and 12 Court cards (those which have faces).

The Red cards represent the Day, the Black cards the Night.

If you let the Jacks = 11, the Queens = 12, and the Kings = 13, then add up all the sums of 1 + 2 + 3 + ”¦to 13 = 91 Multiply this by 4, for the 4 suits; 91 x 4 = 364 then add 1 that is the Joker and you will arrive at the number of days in the year?

Is that mere coincidence? or a greater intelligence…

Note: Of interest is the sum of the letters in all the names of the cards; eg : add up the letters in “one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, Jack, Queen, King” = 52 !

The Spades indicate ploughing/ working, Hearts indicate Love thy crops, Clubs indicate flourishing/ growth, and Diamonds indicate reaping/ wealth….

Also, in some card games 2 Jokers are used… Indicating Leap year….

It seems that there is a deeper philosophy than just a game…

If you have been discouraged or frightened or nervous to play Bridge so far   and now you know rudiments about the Bridge Card playing and its social/ mental/ health benefits as well as coincidental connection to our calendar,  I hope that you will take initiative to come out and play bridge . There are people in the community who will help you to learn and master the conventions and techniques and there are groups who play bridge on a regular basis – no matter what the weather or season.

Please note that the local bridge activities are advertised in the local newspaper, at the local library and sometimes by flyers around town.

So join the fun and bring twinkle in your eyes during dark days of winter or hot sunny days of summer.

Deep River waiting for growth – sent to NRT for publication on 16 April 2017

The following article was sent to North Renfrew Time (NRT) on 16 April 2017 – and it was published on Wednesday 19 April 2017 edition   – under the column – Point of View.

16 April 2017

Deep River waiting for growth.

As   a long time resident of Deep River, I am aware that many residents are concerned about the survival, growth and sustainability of the community. The decline in the town is very visible and the largest employer in the area is going through similar fate over the years. The growth of nuclear industry in Canada is stalled since decades and many scientists and technicians have moved to other places – many to the USA.

Survival and growth of Deep River and surrounding communities depend on the growth of the nuclear laboratories in the area – at least in the immediate and mid-term future. The long term growth of the town (and communities) cannot be predicted at this time.   The search for and possibility of any new industry has met with complete blank – even after investing thousands and many years in the area Economic Development studies.

Now that the new administrative structure  (the GoCo model) is established by the Canadian Government to operate the nuclear site in the area – the revitalization of the site is the part of their Vision 2026 statement and the Canadian   Government seems to support the vision by investing/providing substantial sums of money per year dedicated to successfully achieve this vision .                            Refer to on-line

LINK:   http://www.cnl.ca/en/home/news-and-publications/stories/2016/160414.aspx

There seems to be so much legacy wastes lying around and scattered at various locations at the Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) site – which do present a danger (both radiological and non-radiological) to habitat.   Further, many existing buildings /structures / site services at CNL site are old and somewhat non-code compliant and tending towards being decrepit and building structures seem to be mostly of wooden construction and could be ” tinder ” and thus posing a definite fire hazard.

As I understand, to fulfill and achieve the CNL Vision 2026 for the revitalization of CNL site, it is necessary to   dismantle and remove these old buildings, infrastructures and site services (such as steam line, water lines, electrical systems etc.) and these to be replaced with code compliant and safe services and structures.

This would then allow ” managed ” and progressive revival of the CNL site – hopefully with modern nuclear and related research facilities at the site.

Without the removal of the old decrepit structures and services, the site cannot be transformed into a modern and thriving nuclear research laboratory. Now to facilitate removal all tens of buildings and services, it is necessary to have in place a disposal facility where the removed junk can be disposed off.

I believe it would not be possible or permitted to dispose of such dismantled buildings and site services materials          (containing varying degree of radioactivity) at the municipal garbage disposal (Landfill Site) facility on                        Baggs Road. Even if it is permitted, Baggs Road Landfill site has no capacity to accept such volume of waste.

Further, the dismantled wastes also cannot be carted away to any other site in Canada as such a site is non-existent. Even if such a site is available, the carting of millions of cubic meters of radioactive wastes over the highways would be logistically difficult and very expensive.

So logically, if there is no credible/engineered disposal facility which can accept such wastes – the existing decrepit and site services really cannot be dismantled and thus these old structures will remain in place and deteriorate over the years and then the fallen structures will contaminate the grounds and soil resulting in the contamination migrating towards Ottawa River and contaminating the river without any meaningful monitoring or control.

That would be a shame! The Chalk River site will be abandoned at some time in its life as there will not be much renewal which can be brought in on the site.   The local community loses.

The CNL site is a licensed nuclear site in Canada and in operation for more than half a century.

The site has adequate space which can accommodate a new engineered waste disposal facility (of proper type and size) for low level radioactive contaminated   wastes.

I am confident that the proposed disposal facility will be a professionally engineered and monitored site and would also have gone through stringent regulatory evaluation and have been verified by internationally renowned qualified experts in their fields of expertise.

There comes a time when bold visionary decisions are necessary or critical in one’s life or in the community’s life.   Of course the decisions should be made with proper understanding and required study and scrutiny.

The concept of the development of the proposed disposal facility by CNL is one of these.

While the development of a disposal facility can be accepted as necessary, however it cannot be accepted blindly and thus require scrutiny. It must be remembered that the ” devil is in the details ” and necessary timely constructive criticism or comments can enhance the safety and acceptance of such a facility.

It is my plea that we look at the proposed disposal facility not with emotional eyes and not with the psyche of   ” not in my backyard ” syndrome but with a bold vision to support the revival of the nuclear research, science and technology in our area and in Canada. It is important that such nuclear knowledge is not lost but retained and expanded for our next generation – who will be in high competition with many countries for such knowledge – critical to our safety, security and independence.

This is a momentous time in the history of Deep River and surrounding communities – with challenges and opportunities. It’s time for the area residents to be part of a bold visionary decision for the development of a well engineered and regulated waste disposal facility – which would allow/facilitate the revitalization/revival and growth of CNL site – which will, over the years, enhance Canada’s nuclear science and technology knowledge – with a possibility, in future, of development of a nuclear research reactor at CNL site.

All this, in turn, will influence the growth, survival and sustainability of Deep River and surrounding communities.

This is my opinion.

Housing Bubble in Ontario -2017 May 02

The following was sent to Hon. Premier Kathleen Wynne on 2nd may 2017 by e-mail using his office Portal (on line) .

————

2017 May 02

Hon. Kathleen Wynne

The   Premier of Ontario

Housing Bubble in Ontario

Dear Madam

Please find below my thoughts as to the way the existing housing bubble in Ontario can be cooled   to a rational level.

———————-

Introduction

There is a huge Housing bubble in Ontario

Prices are increasing in high percentage figures year over year.

Issue

The normal buyers – Ontario citizens   especially in GTA   and surrounding area – are left with so much obstacles to even make the first move to buy a residential property.   The young citizens who want to buy their first home are left with whopping debt – that even after intense haggling to make an acceptable offer to purchase a home.

Problem

There are multiple types of Speculators (middleman / interlocutors) – who push up the frenzy.

  • There is evidence of   “ paper flipping ” and other  speculations
  • There is “ property scalping ” in Ontario, which is described as “ those who go into new developments, buy up a slew of properties, and then flip them, while avoiding paying their fair share of taxes.”
  • There is “shadow flipping,” which involved purchase contracts being used for real-estate speculation existing homes
  • Non-resident Foreigners (with lot of cash in hand ) – buying residential properties for their own perceived security – in case they were to leave their home country for whatever reason
  • High demand driven by a strong economy and an influx of new residents from other parts of Canada.

All that results in unscrupulous Real Estate Agents   who encourage /allow bidding wars which leave buyers frustrated.

Government Solution

Premier Kathleen Wynne Government has come up with 16 point plan .

  • Refer to Globe and Mail Article in 22 April 2017 issue   – LINK:   http://www.theglobeandmail.com/real-estate/toronto/ontario-housing-16-big-changes-explained-in-charts/article34757648/
  • Apart from introducing the 15  per cent  “non-resident speculation tax”   which the Ontario government announced recently – there is nothing to curtail other speculators.

The 16 point plan is a feeble attempt to help the prospective renters – which will not cool the market.

My recommendations

In order to deal with this overheated market in the most rational way, and also to protect the value in people”™s homes,   it is necessary that all middlemen/ interlocutors are eliminated   – while also working to increase the supply of new residential units.

  • I think the Government should take measures to   stop the practice of   “ property scalping ”.   And also to stop the practice of ” paper flipping ”

All Real Estate developers must be made responsible to have each property registered individually (and thus pay necessary transfer and land tax) when it is proposed to be bought   by a so-called ” property scalper ” – rather than have the property transferred to a secondary buyer.   If a so called   ” property scalper ”   do not want to register the property in his own name – then the property shall not be sold/transferred to him/her or others (recommended by him/her) at that point.

Whoever (the prospective buyer) has signed the formal   ” offer forms ”   and which is accepted by the seller – shall be the one to whom the property be transferred.   The Real Estate Agent be made responsible to see that no secondary person is considered the buyer.

  • Same   procedure for   the   “shadow flipping” of a property .   No   ” shadow flipping ” of a property be allowed.

  • A drastic measure is also needed – when a property sees a “bidding war”   – the seller may   get the new enhanced price compared to what was listed as the price by the Real Estate Brokerage.

However, the Real Estate Brokerage needs to be penalized by the value of the sum by which the bidding went up compared to the listed price.   This then will stabilized the process of buying a residential property.

I believe that the unnecessary high demand of the residential properties can be curtailed by instituting the above measures.

There is another method by which the whole real estate market can be brought to some   rational functioning – that is to increase the borrowing cost by the buyer. Currently the business/ economic interest rates are really low and thus the value of a real estate property is influenced to be high – as the   yearly payment seems affordable by an ordinary buyer.

It may be necessary   for the Ontario Government to   impose a ” purchase tax ” of say 1% (can be more or less) of the purchase price (at the conclusion of the purchase process) – which would then also give revenue to the Government and stop possibly people to go crazy bidding prices up in trying to buy a residential property.   It will help to   cool the market down –   people would need to rationalize the need to buy a residential property on a   frenzy.

Note: No ” purchase tax ‘ be applicable to the first time buyer of a residential property.

I am sure the Ontario Government will review the above recommendations and have these rationalized   by its economic experts   and bureaucrats.   Hopefully these recommendations make sense.

PS –   Of course   –   the 15  per cent  “non-resident speculation tax”   shall be instituted .

Grandparents – 2017 – 2nd Quarter

Sunday 02 April 2017

On Saturday 01 April 2017 – both Sitara and Sachin slept over at nana/nani home as their parents went to Ottawa to attend a party at Dhanuka’s place . It so happened that the parents did b not spend night in Ottawa but returned to Deep River late at night – just after mid-might – and also stayed at nana/nani home.

So next day on Sunday – the Mistry family was at nana/nani home and they and nani had earlier planned to celebrate nana’s birthday to-day ( instead of next week – nana’s birthday falls on 8th April) -as the family and nana/nani will be in Ottawa next visit to watch an ice hockey match.

Saturday 08 April 2017

Trip to Ottawa – all packed in nana’s maroon 2001 Dodge Caravan – 6 of us – Sitara, Sachin, Nina , Sunjay , nani and nana – driven by Sunjay . To watch Last regular season Ottawa Senators Ice Hockey game against New York Rangers . Senators winning 3 to 1.

Nina Posted on her Facebook Wall on 08 April 2017

Nina Shah tagged you in a post.

Nina wrote: “Happiest of birthdays to my amazingly caring and wonderful father! We stole your car and kidnapped you to take you to the last regular season Ottawa Senators game ….woo hoo!!! Thank goodness moms favourite Alfredson is no longer playing….she may actually talk to you during the game. lol”

This is what nana posted on his Facebook Wall on 09 April 2017 – thanking for good wishes.

” I would like to thanks all my family members and dear friends who are warm in hearts and really precious – for wishing me good wishes for my 77th birthday . I had wonderful time – spent in the company of my great grandkids and Nina & Sunjay at the CanadianTire Center, Ottawa watching Ice Hockey match berween Senators and New York Rangers( Senators won 3 to 1) . After that had good Thai dinner at The Silver Spoon Restuarant and then watched 3D movie -The Smurffs – Finding new Village and returned home at mid-night. A good day for a Senior !! Love to you all.”

Monday 10 April 2017

This day kids and their parents came over to nana/nani home   (after school) – to rest and have their dinner (brought from outside – Valumart – Potato wedges and chicken plus some salad)   . Mondays nana/nani go to Petawawa to play cards (Bridge) and thus nani’s dinner usually is not available except few things.

However, this Monday was a milestone in other ways.     Both nana/nani were shown a book written by Sitara   – title ” The return of Jebb ” – all typed on computer by Sitara (of course helped by her mom) and included were also some pictures ( paintings by Sitara) to describe an event or to show a map. The story is about two seals (cubs) -whose parents were abducted by Jebb and the seals (cubs) went on a mission to find their parents .

Tuesday 11 April 2017

This day was a ” sort of ” milestone – for Sitara who walked from school (after the end of school) to come to nana/nani home . The girl is growing up . No need for a pick up from the school – if kids were to come to nana/nani home in Deep River.

Friday 14 April 2017

It is Easter Friday day but for nana/nani – it was different highlight which greeted the morning. This was a charcoal drawing (of a jelly fish) done by Sitara   – so exquisite and pleasing to the eye. Her mom had posted that on her Facebook Wall (of this day) – and it got praise from so many of Mistry friends.

Also on this day the Mister family went to Sudbury (to spend the Easter weekend) – for North Science museum   and watch a movie or so.

Wednesday 19 April 2017

Sachin was picked up from school by his nani   (at 3.40 pm) – and then he came over to the DR Library Program room with his nani –   where nana/nani were playing bridge. Sachin likes to watch nana playing bridge – he is sharp and understands the rudiments of counting points and also the cards.

Sitara had gone to her art class after school by walking – she likes to go by herself nowadays – by walking . She then got picked up by her dad at 5.00 pm and all came nana/nani home for dinner .   This day kids’ mom was working in Pembroke and she also joined in the dinner after her work ( about 5.30 pm).

Kids were watching TV together on   the sofa in the Living room (nana/nani home) – the bonhomie between the sister and brother was very heartwarming.

Thursday 20 April 2017

This day there was a music (singing) program at the Mackenzie Community School. Sachin’s class (Gr.2) was also presenting a song . So nana/nani along with Sachin’s parents and his sister Sitara   went to school   after   dinner a tnana/nani home . The program started just after 6:15 pm . The Childs Auditorium was filled up – children and their parents/Grandparents .   Sachin’s class song was more lovelier than others with   some gestures/performance. Sachin was with a smile, doing all his gestures and singing well. Nana had a great time watching and hearing him sing.

After the sing song program – all were at the school – going round to look at and admire art pieces (paintings and models) prepared by students -all displayed on the wall and the on tables. Sitara (amongst other students) had a few art pieces and a couple of models   and Sachin also   had a couple of paintings.

Friday 21 April 2017

This day the kids came home to nana/nani home after school.     This is because their parents had gone to Pembroke in the afternoon for seeing their accountant for tax preparation.

It was different this time – the kids did not want to be picked up from school by nana/nani in the car but they wanted to come by themselves walking from Mackenzie School to nana/nani home.   And they did.

They are growing up   – sister and brother team .   Independent and with confidence.       So from now on they will walk after school   to their destinations in Deep River – if they are not going home in the School bus   or are not picked up by their mom from the school .   Nana/nani would get a bit of relaxed time.

Saturday 22 April 2017

This day Priya became 4 months old.

Her mom sent by e-mail (dated to-day) Priya’s 4 month photo with the white bear (stuffed)   and the following note:

”   Priya is enjoying the Winkle toy (Maya’s favourite at this age). She weighed 14 lb 2 oz   at her (early) 4-month visit a few days ago. She squeals, smiles, and rolls from front to back ”

————-
” Moose baby after dinner on Saturday night. We waited a few minutes to go out and play     ” Thats what Nina posted on her Fcebook Wall – with a photo of a Moose baby.

On Sunday both Sitara and Sachin were outdoors (with their parents also being there) at the shore of the Ottawa River – along their property.

And then Sitara was in the kitchen making tandoori chicken.

This is what her mom posted on her Facebook Wall in the evening of Sunday.

” The Onion goggles are out! S making tandoori chicken ”

Sunday 23 April 2017

This day we had a nice chat (in the morning) with Priya’s mom ( Shannon) on phone.   After that the kids ( Priya, Kieran and Maya) went to the playground across their house – with their mom.

From there she sent (by e-mail) a few photos of the kids playing in the playground .

Shannon also commented   as below:

” Nice talking to you today! Here is Priya going in the swing at the park for the first time. We also have Kieran in his new green pyjamas and hat, and Maya showing off her lost tooth! ”

Note: Further following tid-bits were exchanged on the phone re: kids’ progress or what is happening in their lives.

Maya

Lost her front bottom tooth

She can tie her own shoe lashes now

She rides   two-wheeler bike – without training wheels

Kieran

Can go confidently on a kiddie scooter

He is now fully toilet trained and   wears underwears.

Thursday 27 April 2017

Maya wrote a very heart moving poem yesterday on her own – her mom sent it

(by e-mail on 27 April 2017) to the family members.

She wrote -along with photo of the poem :

” Here is a poem Maya wrote yesterday. Sending you all lots of love! xox ”

The poem is transcribed here – as she wrote on a piece of paper ( a photo of which was enclosed with her mom’s e-mail)

Love is the world

I just want Love !!!

I a just happy with Love.

What a beautiful spiritual message – for all of us!

Friday 28 April 2017

Both Sitara and Sachin came to nana/nani home after school – of course walking   (with all the school stuff on their back – in the ruck sack).

Note :   A ruck sack   is a bag with shoulder straps that allow it to be carried on someone’s back.

Their parents have had already left for Ottawa – to go to a spa place and thus the kids were to spend two nights at nana/nani.   Nani likes to look after the kids though these days it is   bit difficult as nana has cold and thus have to be careful to remain a bit aloof – not to spread any germs to the kids.

So kids spent Friday and Saturday night at nana/nani home .   Their parents returned from Ottawa on late Saturday night   (and also stayed at nana/nani home in Deep River) – after the kids had gone to bed and thus the kids were able to see their parents only on Sunday Morning.

Both kids were very polite and very loving with both nana and nani . However, Sitara showed (in a way) she was missing her parents – thus drew a few drawings – sort of trying to welcome them back from Ottawa and stuck-posted   these paintings on the outside front door- for her parents to see when they
arrive back from Ottawa.

——————–
Maya, Kieran and Priya went to a birthday party in Oakville with their parents .   ???

——————–

Saturday 29 April 2017

This day nana/nani took the kids to a birthday party ( to which they were invited) in Petawawa . This was a birthday for Hrithik   ( 5 year old kid) and the party was at the Lions Hall in Petawawa .   nana drove teh kids   (and of course their nani ) in his new 2016 Nissan Rogue . The party was at 1.00 pm and ended at 3.00 pm.

Sunday 30 April 2017

Kids went home to Mackey with their parents just after lunch .

Monday   01 May 2017

It was nice to talk to Sunir on phone – all seems well and Both Sunir and Shannon are busy getting the basement on their house (in Toronto) finished and renovated – which they expect will be completed by end June (2017).

The following further tid-bits re: kids progress in their growth was shared .

Priya

Our 4 month old granddaughter is now able to roll on her own from back on to her tummy   and after a roll over – looks around with a satisfied happy face – savouring her accomplishment.

Priya enjoys playing ” patty cake ” with her parents and responds by raising her hands to play.

Priya’s hair looking blond.

Kieran

Kieran has now started painting art on his own – his favourite colour is green for his   art work.

Kieran enjoys flying toy helicopter in house and he enjoys playing with the toy helicopter together with his big sister Maya.

Maya

Maya has now started swimming underwater as well as in the deep end of the swimming pool.

She takes swimming lessons regularly. So does Kieran .

Both Maya and Kieran are becoming good playmates – they enjoy each other’s company .

Saturday 06 May 2017

This day both Sitara and Sachin participated in a Swim-a- thon event at the Mackenzie Pool (in Deep River) – starting at 8.00 am to 9.00 am. Sitara did 2.1 km of swim run and Sachin did a 1.5 km run.

Both kids are participating in the Swim-a- thon to raise funds to support the Candu Club.

Nana/nani were present to cheer both kids. Their mom helped in the organization of the event   and dad was there to help out wherever needed.

This is what Nina posted on her Facebook Wall ( 06 May 2017) along with photos of the kids swimming.

“Swim-a-Thon Success! So many kids out to support the Candu Club! Sitara swam 2.1 km and Sachin Swam 1.5km in about 1 hour and 5 min ”

Monday 08 May 2017

This day Sitara was singing as part of her school group at Mackenzie Community School   – (Childs Auditorium ). Both nana/nani joined the family to cheer/watch/enjoy the singing. The whole event was for one hour – from 7.00 pm to 8.00 pm.
Thursday 11 May 2017

This day nana had problem of vomiting lot – and thus had to go to the Deep River Hospital Emergency – two times (at the same night   – or early Friday) by Ambulance. Then on Friday, nana was transferred to Pembroke Hospital – to see a specialist ( for intestinal blockage) – and nana stayed there till Monday 15 May 2017 . The Pembroke Hospital and the visiting surgeon administered treatment   – which finally showed “gas passing ” and some relaxation . Thus nana was allowed home on Monday – driven home by nani in the 2001 maroon Dodge minivan.

Well kids (Sitara and Sachin) came over to the Hospital on Sunday   to visit nana and cheer him up. They came with their parents.

Also the kids from Toronto ( Maya, Kieran and Priya ) were all on the phone with their dad -calling Bapuji.

By the way – Sitara spent last few days working on her 2016-2017 Year book and completed it – helped by her mom.

Maya, Kieran and Priya were all excited as the basement at their house in Toronto was now renovated with new carpet and walls.   So there is now definite progress for the comfort at home for the three kids to play a bit more freely.

Thursday 18 May 2017

After few days at the Pembroke Hospital – nana came back home on Monday (15 May 2017) – driven home home by nani in the 2001 maroon Dodge minivan.

Well, having recovered somewhat and in bit better spirit – nana was able to go to Mackenzie Community   School ( Childs Auditorium ) – along with nani – to cheer and watch Sitara participating in A Talent Show at the school – show starting at 2.30 pm .

This is what Nina ( Sitara’s mom) posted on her Facebook Wall – with a photo of Sitara at the piano :

” Sitara playing “7 years” at the talent show today at school “.

plus :

” lots of variety – 2 dance performances, a band (drums/flute/guitar/vocal), 2 piano pieces with some comedy, 2 songs (3 including Mr. Saari), gymnastics. It was great ”

———-

After school, the kids came nana/nani home with their mom – had dinner (Burger King take-out brought   by their mom) and then when their dad arrived Sachin got ready to go to play soccer with his dad and Sitara and her mom to go to Deep River Yacht   Club to felicitate the new owners of the local newspaper -North Renfrew Times .   However, plan changed as there was a massive thunder and rain – thus all Mistry family headed to the Deep River Yacht   Club .   Both nana/nani also went separately there. The kids had a great time looking over/through the   binders containing old issues of the newspaper   . They found photos of their SunirMama and their mom   (Nina) – when growing up in Deep River. Sachin was excited to find and read about his Birth Announcement (20 July 2009) in the newspaper in one of the July 2009 issues.

This is what his mom (nina) posted on her Facebook Wall:

” Sachin found his birth announcement! – NRT opening Open House ”
Note:     The follwing was posted by Sachin’s mom on her Facebook Wall on Wednesday May 17 2017.

” Sachin’s 2016-17 yearbook is done! It was MUCH easier the 2nd time around   🙂 It looks fantastic. So excited to get it. Got the hard cover options for each kid ”

Saturday 27 May 2017

This Saturday 27 May 2017 is the 50th Wedding Anniversary of kids’ grandpa (Pravin) and grandma (Jashoda) – who got 50 years ago in Nairobi, Kenya.

Both     families – Nina/Sunjay, Sitara and Sachin and also Sunir/Shannon, Maya, Kieran and Priya will travel   to Ottawa to participate in   a marathon walk and then all will go for dinner together.

Pravin/Jackie will travel with Nina’s family – possibly in the 2001 maroon Dodge minivan.   Sunir and family will travel from Ottawa in their car.   While Sunir and family will stay night in Ottawa – with their friends – the Mistry family and grandparents will return back to their home in Deep River & Mackey.

The Saturday marathon walk is called   ” Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend ”
Mistry family will participate in 5k walk -starting at 4.00 pm. (HTG Sports Ottawa 5K )
Note : The HTG Sports Ottawa 5K takes participants past Ottawa”™s historic Parliament buildings, by the storied Chateau Laurier and along the Rideau Canal for a 5K tour of some of Ottawa”™s biggest landmarks.
Sunir’s family will participate in 2k walk – starting at 3.00 pm     ( Ottawa 2K )
Note:   From youthful speedsters to families running and walking together, inclusivity and enthusiasm take centre stage at the Ottawa 2K. This is a race to be enjoyed together. And, yes, strollers are allowed!
Starting at Ottawa City Hall, the Ottawa 2K sends participants down a cheering Elgin Street before looping back down the Rideau Canal for a finish line experience that”™s hard to beat.
———–
So the Mistry family and nana/nani left Deep River at 9.30 am in the 2001 maroon Dodge minivan to go to Ottawa. The van can accommodate easily six people including the driver. Sunjay drove the minivan   and we all six arrived safely at noon – when we collected our kit from the Shaw Center at 55 Colonel By road.
After that we came over to the Elgin Rd/Laurier Rd from where the Tamarack walk was to start.   There we met Sunir/Shannon and family (Maya, Kieran and Priya) – who were all ready to participate in 2k walk – Priya in the stroller and also Kieran too was in the stroller for some of the time – or on his dad’s shoulders.   All three kids were awesome and then their cousins Sitara and Sachin – all were so joyous to be together. The grounds were festive with thousands of people milling around . After a while, Risha             ( Sunjay’s cousin from Toronto) was also there – as she was spending summer in Ottawa .     Maya, Kieran and Priya were out on the walk (2 km) with their parents -starting at 3.00 pm and Sitara, Sachin and their parents -along with nana/nani went on the walk (5 km) at 4.00 pm .     Nana/nani did only 3 km as nana got tired (and a bit hot with the sun on the head) and they took a ride with the “medical attendees” back to the start line . All got a participation award .
After the walk, the family met at a Japanese Restaurant – with all the ambiance of cooking at the table where the dining was. Kids enjoyed it .   There was a special chocolate cake ( with no dairy or nuts) – for celebrating grandparents 50th Wedding Anniversary . All cheered the grandparents – Sitara and Sachin had made excellent “best wishes ” cards   – which they presented to their nana/nani.
Sunir and family left a bit early -around 6.30 pm- as it was past Priya’s sleeping time . Sunir/Shannon were spending time in Ottawa with their friends .
Mistrys and nana/nani arrived back in Deep Rivera t midnight.

Final Junior Music Club Performance of the season.
Sitara and Sachin participated in the performance at Childs Auditorium (Mackenzie School) in Deep River.
The performance was in the evening at 6.15 p.m – so all had dinner at nana/nani home in Deep River before going over to the Auditorium. Nana/nani also went.
Sachin (age 7) plays Hickory Dickory Dock and Sitara (age 9) plays Rhinos in the Mud.
Thursday 27 June 2017

This being the last school day, both Sitara and Sachin were entertained at Tim Horton by their parents. This is their annual ritual/tradition.   Both nana/nani also joined in the fun.

Nana was a bit buoyant as his article   (titled -Why I love Canada)   along with a photo of nana/nani at the Tamarack Race in Ottawa was published in the North Renfrew Times   (NRT) of Wednesday 26 June 2017. Further his poem   (titled –   O! Canada   Happy 150th)   was recited at the opening of the Renfrew Bridge Club game to celebrate Canada’s 150 celebration.

In Toronto, as the school ended – all three kids (Maya, Kieran and Priya) went to the cottage with   their parents – this is becoming an almost a ritual/tradition for them. The cottage belongs to Shannon’s parents -where Shannon & family along with her sister Heather’s family join in with   their parents in summer .

Note:     A bridge club in Toronto circulated (by e-mail)   Pravin’s Canada Day Poem to its membership
