Being Grandparents (paternal)- 5

This post is a continuation of  the earlier posts ”” (Being Grandparents (paternal) -1, Being Grandparents (paternal)- 2,     Being Grandparents (paternal)-3 & Being Grandparents (paternal)-4””””  as the previous  posts were becoming a tad bit busy.

Thursday 10 May 2012

This day Maya   had gone to Huntsville with her mom & grandma   ( maternal ) from Toronto to visit her great grandparents ( Kathy’s parents ). They were to spend a night there .

Same day, Maya’s Ba & Bapuji were driving to Toronto from Deep River – her Bapuji was going to Toronto to attend an AGM of his Engineering Association and also to attend an Award Gala to recognise some selected Engineers for their volunteer service to the Engineering Association.   So on the way to Toronto they also stopped over at Huntsville to meet with Maya and her mom & folks. Maya and her mom had just recently returned back from their international travel to Switzerland where Maya met and coddled by her Aunt Erica and her boyfriend Matt.

Ba & Bapuji had not seen & played with Maya for about a couple of months and she is growing fast – now she is sitting   by herself and crawling etc.   So this was first opportunity for them to see her (in Huntsville!).   Well, when her Ba   & Bapuji arrived at Huntsville, they found Maya was having her afternoon nap. So her Ba & Bapuji spent time with Maya’s Mom & grandma and her great Grandfather. Her Grandmother was away attending a meeting (for Meals on Wheel)   – where she volunteers her time .     After spending about an hour, Ba/Bapuji left as they wanted to be in Toronto before traffic builds up in Toronto.   Maya had remained with her nap – and she was not disturbed at that time as her Ba/Bapuji were to spend time with her   in the coming days when return back to Toronto (from Huntsville) .

As summer is showing sign of appearing and weather becoming hotter (even now in May) , Maya is having a ball of a time. This is at a time even when there is bit of a mayhem at her home in Toronto – as the house is in a renovation phase – old kitchen is gutted and new one is being built – the work is progressing well but Maya requires to play in a restricted/constrined environment. She is holding on well. She goes (of course with her mom and sometime with her dad   like on Tuesday 8 May 2012 – after she returned back from Switzerland) to the park opposite to the house   (right across the road from house) and at time to picnic at other parks in the City.

Maya had her first swimming “lesson” ”” with her dad on Tuesday 8 May 2012   . What a great feeling for both father & daughter ( of course to all of us even far away – but looking at her photo (on her dad’s Facebook) with her dad in the   swimming pool gives us joy).

Wednesday   6 June 2012

Maya has become very active – rolling, crawling and just curious about going places on her own steam . She is becoming more independent and exploring new places in the house.   So last weekend, it happened .   She went down the stairs – getting out of parent’s bedroom – and had a tumble/roll over the  stairway .   Luckily she did not get hurt . So today  the baby gate was installed at the top of the   stair – The following sentiments were expressed in today’s e-mail  (with Maya’s photo exploring  the new gate ) by her mom

” Thanks to Grandpa for his help installing the baby gate last night and to Grandma for entertaining Maya while we struggled to assemble it. (Hopefully the second one will be easier!) As you can see from the photo, Maya is already trying to figure out how to open the gate but so far no luck… hopefully this will avoid any more nasty falls down the treacherous stairs! ”

Thursday 7 June 2012

Today it is her 10-month  birthday and she already is in throes of getting her tooth #8  .  This one seems to be causing her a lot of pain today, as well as a bit of a fever. She was chomping on frozen zucchini purée at her Grandma’s house to try and help with the sore gums.

And tomorrow morning she is flying off  to Victoria, British Columbia with her mom and to be joined later by her dad (her dad has gone to Chicago for business appointment). She is turning out to be an extensive traveller – having just returned from Switzerland.

Friday 8 June 2012

Maya & her mom arrived safely at Vancouver, British Columbia after a long flight late in the afternoon. We have arrived safely in BC after a long flight yesterday.

Maya was not feeling too well and has been very fussy, hoarse and drooling, so she might have a throat infection (according to her mom) in addition to the teething. Poor thing!

On Saturday (9 June 2012) Maya sported her nice striped tights – as she was attending a   wedding (her mom’s friend’s wedding) in the afternoon! Her dad also had joined Maya (& her mom) arriving from Chicago – where he had earlier gone for business needs.

The wedding was great . Elizabeth (Sarah’s mom) babysat Maya so that her parents could enjoy the reception.   On Sunday ( 10 June 2012) the family stayed with Sarah’s family in Victoria (who lived in a lovely house by the ocean). Maya was spotted playing with her daddy (climbing over him) at the park . She was definitely feeling a bit better today.

On Monday 11 June 2012 – Maya went and loved her first boat ride! Christopher, Sarah’s dad, was the captain (it’s his new job!) of a  Ferry   and thus   the family got a free tour of Victoria harbour

On Tuesday 12 June 2012 , Maya & parents were having a lovely day in Victoria. They went to a big park where Maya (along with her parents) fed the ducks, went to the playground and visited the petting zoo. Maya was feeling a lot better but still is having major issues with the time change.

Maya returned back to Toronto on Friday 15 June 2012 with her parents and on Saturday 16 June , her Ba/Bapuji   came over from Deep River (via Belleville – where her grandparents went to attend an Engineering Congress on Friday 15 June . Her Bapuji being taking part in volunteering for the Engineering Association)

Her Ba / Bapuji wanted to visit Maya and spend time with her and of course with her parents.   Maya was cuddled and hugged and kissed and played with. Maya did her strut – wanting to go walking across the house holding her Bapuji’s both fingers . She likes to go walking in the newly opened up space – as the old kitchen is now gone with new different and wider kitchen is in place -after renovation done recently.  There is wider place (not constricted ) space available for Maya to traverse.  Maya also went to the park across the road from the house with her Bapuji.   Her Ba/Bapuji returned to Deep River on Monday 17 June .     While in Toronto, her Ba attended a wedding shower on Saturday for Maya’s aunt Heather (her mom’s sister) – she went (car pooled)   with her maternal grandma and great grandma – and with her mom.

Miscellaneous – June 17 to June 29 2012

·                 Maya has now more than 8 teeth and like to show these off   with her stunning smile .   Photos have been taken of her pose with smiling face showing the glittering teeth.

·                 Maya had learnt to cross her fingers -as if wishing for something   or hiding some mischief and then crossing fingers to wish that she is not caught.

·                 She likes to go outdoors (specially it being summer) and always ready to climb into her stroller  (of course with the help of her mom or dad) and sometimes she digs into the stroller’s handle – as if she is hungry or want to sooth her itching gums.

·                 Now that she is trying to stand up and hold on to the edge of the sofa or held by her parents   – it is not surprising that she starts to poke into her dad’s computer   – funny enough that recently she did that but with a twist – also holding a baby story book about robots. This amused her dad quite a bit.

on Wednesday June 27   – her mom wrote on e-mail to the family ” Our playgroup went on a “field trip” to an awesome new playground and splash pad today. The play structure had some cool steps with lots of holes for kids to grab on to so Maya climbed up her first few stairs! ”   A series of photos show the sequence of Maya (Learning to climb stairs!) trying to climb the stairs.

Sunday 8 July 2012

This day Maya arrived in Deep River with her parents – after spending a couple of days in Ottawa.   She is a traveller – hoping from one place to another.

This is a special day as she came to Deep River to spend some 4 days ( upto Thursday) with her Ba, Bapuji and cousins here in Mackey.

The family had organised a welcoming party for her and her parents in the backyard (at Ba/Bapuji house in Deep River) and some of the friends in the Community (East Indian) were there to welcome them. These friends are with whom Sunir has grown with when in Deep River prior to going to University. They were pleased to  welcome Maya in their fold.   Also Ann & her friend Ena ( 90 year old) – acquaintance from Petawawa bridge club – also joined in to welcome Maya. Ann had driven all the way back from Ottawa after playing at a bridge tournament and before going to a barbeque at Pembroke.

Maya got lots of cuddles , hugs and playing times with many adults but more so with Sitara and Sachin.   A birthday cake was lighted and cut by Maya (of course helped by her mom & dad) . Also Sitara and Sachin revelled in the cake cutting and singing ” Happy Birthday . She turned 11 months yesterday but it was decided to celebrate her 1st Birthday early here in Deep River as  it would be difficult to participate in her birthday party at Toronto on 7 August as her cousins would also be celebrating Sitara’s 5th birthday here at Mackey.

After cake cutting and all the fun – she opened many gifts that she was showered with by all those guests who were present.     It was decided to open family gifts on coming Tuesday as otherwise it becomes a bit too much and overbearing for the young baby.

Monday  9 July 2012

Maya went to Lemure Beach in Deep River with   her parents and Ba.  She played in the sand and enjoyed herself.

Maya   is very friendly and have taken to her Ba & Bapuji well and plays with them in the morning after waking up.   She is inquisitive and takes all toys well and work out how to play with each and every one of these toys.   She definitely can play with “shape sorter” and also ring stacking.     She is also very fitting in with Sitara and also with Sachin. They play together like a team.

Tuesday 10 July 2012

The cousins came over from Mackey and spend most afternoon and evening together . Maya had a fun time -so did Sitara and Sachin. Sachin liked to play with his SunirMama who would lift him to twirl him in the air and Sitara would play with her ShannonMami who would read books to her.   Maya is the most coy girl and played with everyone.  After dinner, Maya opened birthday gifts from her Ba, Bapuji and cousins and their parents.   She has a car full of toys to lug to Toronto on Thursday.

Wednesday  11 July 2012

Maya’s parents went sailing with Ken in the afternoon – while Maya was dozing with Ba and Bapuji watching her. She was great girl – did not even make a sound until her parents were back.

A well behaved girl and she had a wonderful siesta to shake of tiredness of busy time for last few days.

Of course all days she spent in Deep River she would have a stroll walk with her mom or parents and go downtown or to Tim Horton on the Highway .

Thursday  12 July 2012

This   day Maya said “bye” to Deep River and left at about 9.00 am for Huntsville  – to her great great grandparents  home and from there to her grandparents  cottage to spendweekend there.       Note: At the cottage , she had great time outdoors but got stricken with some ‘sun stroke’ .   She also had a minor accident – she was being in her aunt Heather’s hands when unfortunately Heather tripped.

Fortunately Maya seems to have recovered from these incidents.

Monday 23 July 2012

This was the first day when Maya was taken for an hour to the “daycare” . This is the place Maya will be spending her time in the coming days when her mom goes to work.

Her mom stayed with   her the whole time -as it was Maya’s first day.

Tuesday 24 July 2012

Today she went to daycare   for the morning part of the day . She was left alone by herself – no mommy there to give her company. Of course there were other kids and many toys.

She endured the separation bravely though broke into crying when mommy arrived to pick her up. It is also emotional for her mommy   – just to leave her baby with strangers.   They survived the day and are becoming ready for the next days to come.

Saturday 28 July 2012

This weekend Maya spent with her dad alone as her mom had gone to cottage to celebrate the “bachelorette party”   for her aunt Heather. It was the first time that her dad has been alone with Maya for an extended period of time.

Maya was very comfortable with being taken care of by her dad.

She has also started using the walker.   Quote from her mom’s e-mail report

” Maya has figured out how to walk with the walker so she has been doing laps up and down the main floor today. (She kind of looks like Gran using her walker!)

The daycare drop off still involved tears on Maya’s part this morning, but I managed to hold it together, so I guess that’s progress 😉 ”

Wednesday   1 August 2012

Unfortunately, Maya developed a fever yesterday while at daycare, so her mom had to leave work early to come pick her up. She seems a bit better today, but still not quite herself, and she is supposed to be 24 hours fever-free before returning to daycare, thus her mom is   working from home today. Fortunately she has the flexibility to do that since she is on a research block.   Hopefully Maya will be all better by tomorrow so her mom can return to her work.

So far it seems that it hasn’t been the smoothest transition to daycare and her mom working but it is a transition time for the baby and also for her mom.

Note:   kids do pick up viruses and other ailments when at school . This is born out from the fact   taht both Maya’s cousins – Sitara & Sachin – are always picking up something or another.   Kids have always to keep fighting the illnesses.

Thursday 2 August 2012

Maya had a little party (to celbrate her upcoming birthday) in the afternoon with some of her friend’s from playgroup.

She enjoyed of her cupcake (devoured in about 10 seconds flat). The name of her two friends in the PlayGroup   -Mia   and Ben .

During the weekend (Sunday 5 August) she had birthday party at her maternal grandparents   – followed by the real birthday party at her parents’ home on 7 August 2012   – her   birthday. She had few friends (with their parents) over.

Now she is well versed with knowing and eating cupcakes   .

Shortly after her birthday – a couple of days later   – she took a couple of steps on her own. So pretty soon she will be walking on her own all over.

Wednesday   22 August 2012

Ba/Bapuji   travelled to Toronto to stay with Maya and family. Her mom’s sister (Heather)   is getting married to Ryan   at the Golf Club (Donalda Club off North York Road) on Saturday 25 August 2012 and Ba.Bapuji will attend the wedding but will stay at home during the dinner/reception -to look after Maya when she would be sleeping . Her parents can then have a worry free celebration at the Club.

On Friday evening Maya went with her parents for rehersal and then dinner at her maternal grandparents home – a pre-wedding dinner by Heather’s in-laws but at her parents’ home. Ba/Bapuji also joined in the dinner and revellery.

On Saturday 25 August 2012   – the wedding was in the afternoon at 5.00 p.m – Maya was to participate as a ” flower girl ” along with Ryan’s two nieces.   Maya (in fact all three girls) was dressed repledently in cute white dress with purple laces and also a purple hair pin.   She was as ever a happy girl – she was accompanied by her mom – holding her one hand – so Maya can walk without falling down. She has just started to take a step on her own and not yet walking by herself. At the end of the long walk to bride/bridegroon alter -she was welcomed by her proud dad and held so warmly by him. Maya and other two “flower girls”   -each was carrying   a silver basket full of flowers -for guest to shower on the newly proclaimed couple.

After the wedding and cocktail thereafter   – Maya was taken by car by her Ba/Bapuji to home and after some play she went to sleep soundly in her nursery room.   Note: At the cocktail, Maya was really photographed, played with and cajoled by many guests – particularly she enjoyed playing   with her Garndma ( Kathy) and also all the great- great grand parents ( Rae & Ken, Opal & Ray) . She was the star – her aunts were all loving her. Her Aunt Heather was in a very resplendant wedding gown and new uncle Ryan was well suited in black.

Maya got a set of gold bangles   to wear during the wedding – however she only wore it during Friday dinner . She also got pink pants & coat from Ba/Bapuji   for her wear.

Ba/Bapuji left for Deep River on Monday (27 August 2012)   after nice time in Toronto – even though her Bapuji was a bit wobbly due to ear infection – his right ear has gone deaf and he is on medication.

Thursday 30 August 2012

Talking to her dad in the evening of Thursday, it was found that she has started to take few steps by herself ( at least 5 or 6 at a time) . Wow! – pretty soon she will be walking by herslf all over.

Note: Over last couple of week Maya has started saying words like “baby”   , “Mummmm”, “Mommy”. She does communicates by signalling or touching. She identifies toys and stuff that she wants and can let know she has completed eating.   If her dad or mom persists feeding her – as a last resort she throws the food on the floor.

Saturday 15 September 2012

This day Maya had a visitor from far away. Her dad’s great uncle (Kantikaka ) had come to visit Canada (via London, UK) from Nairobi ,Kenya. Kantikaka is the eldest brother of her Bapuji. He spent the day at her parents’ home and then went to his froend’s home to spend few days with his friend in Mississauga.   Kantikaka was addressed as “Mota Bapuji” – the elder grandfather for Maya.

He came back to visit again on Wednesday 19 September and stayed at her parents home for three (3) days before going to Deep River with her Bapuji.

Maya’s Ba & Bapuji had come over from Deep River on Friday 14 September 2012   – to spend a week with Maya and her parents – though her dad went to USA on Monday 17 September 2012 (early morning) for   a week.

Note: More writing for interplay   with ” Mota Bapuji ” see my Post ” My Brother Kanti’s visit to Canada “

Saturday 6 October 2012

Today was Maya’s first sleep over at her Grandparents (maternal) home   – this facilitated her parents to attend a wedding ( Brandan’s – Her dad school friend from Deep River) . In fact her dad was Brandon’s main guy (best man) at the wedding.

Sunday 18 November 2012

To-day, Maya’s Ba & Bapuji visited Maya and her parents – coming/driving from Deep River on Friday 16 November 2012 . Her Bapuji was attending a Chapters Leaders Conference (for PEO) & an OSPE Award Gala – staying at Toronto Airport Merriott Hotel for two (2 nights ) .

Note:   at the Gala – her Ba won a Coffee Maker from Personal Insurance Co.

Maya’s parents and Maya had lunch together with her Ba & Bapuji and then after lunch and Maya’s afternoon snooze – it was decided to go to Ram mandir (in Mississauga at 270 Export Blvd, Mississauga, ON L5S 1Y9 – Telphone : (905) 696-8886 )- a Hindu Temple – where there also is Shree Jalaram’s idol .   The Temple -inner sactum) was occupied when Maya with her dad & grandprents (paternal) arrived. Her mom could not join as she was “on call’ from her medical duties and thus rather tied up.

As the main temple area was occupied , it was decided to have a small puja ( thanking Gods for the arrival of Maya on this earth) . This was readily accommodated by one of the presiding priests in the temple.   A puja was offered by Maya , her dad & her grandparents – necessary offerings were made and tilak and “rakhi ” were applied to each member of the family.   The whole process went smoothly- Maya getting engrossed in it   and eventually sitting down near the Ganesh’s Idol and then retriving a portion of the “Prasadi” offered and then eating it joyfully along with her dad.

Her Ba & Bapuji stayed at Maya’s home till Tuesday morning. So on Monday & Tuesday morning, Maya’s Bapuji joined her dad to take Maya (by a stroller) to the Daycare centre on Melrose Road . The Day care centre is very close to where Maya & her parents live.     In the evening of Monday , Maya’s Ba & Bapuji picked her up from the Day care centre – after they had been to a “matinnee”   movie – a 007 movie called SkyFall . This movie was watched at the Cinema on Eglinton Road – movie starting on at 1.00 pm and finishing at 3.35 p.m.   After that they returned back to Lawrence Station (by subway – an underground train) near the Daycare Centre.

Maya was all preppy – talking with her Ba along the way to the home. She notes/spotted the early moon in the sky – which her Ba/Bapuji were not aware of – but she did point the moon out – by saying “mooon”   “mooon”   and raising   her hand towards the moon in the sky.   For a girl of only 15 months -that was quite sharp.

Mid-May 2012
These kids are fortunate that their parents are quite   focussed on the kids’ progress. Over the year, they (both kids – at each one’s level) have had swimming classes, skiing classes, gym and also music classes. The parents take them from Deep River to Petawawa.

Further, they are on travel whenever the parents can take them to new places. They have visited many museums, playgrounds , zoos , marine parks   – from Sudbury to Ottawa to Toronto to Niagara falls to USA etc. They also have gone overseas to beach resorts from Mexico and Cuba.
Just recently they had been to Sudbury (Thursday 5 April to 8 April 2012) and have gone to a resort in Mexico (3 May 2012 to 11May 2012) and after that they returned back (on Monday 21 May 2012) from USA visiting Sunjay’s cousin.

Their nana/nani are very much enriched by the kids’ activities and specially their visits to nana/nani home whenever an opportunity comes . Some sleep over and some times looking after them whenever their parents get tied up elsewhere.

Their nana/nani enjoy their shopping these days as when shopping they have kids in their minds   and buy for kids (even token gifts – something small) whenever they buy food, clothes and miscellaneous – whatever catch their eyes.   They enjoy playfulness , love and smiles by kids.

Saturday 9 June 2012 , the kids went with their parents to   a Petting Zoo in Petawawa and had a great time there – all out doors and with animals. Then on Sunday, Their parents took them to the “Touch the Truck” show in Ottawa . This was exciting and the kids (specially Sachin) enjoyed riding various trucks.   They spent Tuesday 12 June 2012 at their nana/nani home (Sitara was picked up by her nana after school from her baby-sitter’s home) . Note: Sitara goes by bus to her baby-sitter’s home after her junior KG school (at Mckenzie Community School ) .

This day Sachin got a hair-cut by her mom (at his nana/nani home). He is even more handsome with the hair-cut.

Sunday 10 June 2012   to Friday 29 June 2012

Both kids do visit their nana/nani home in Deep River   – mostly on Tuesdays and Thursdays (when their mom is not at work).   What they have been noticing is that their nana/nani home has a new roof , a patio deck in the front of the house   (full width of front ) and also a gazebo at the backyard   -so outdoor picnic can be had without the sun on the head.
A barbeque was arranged on Tuesday 26 June – as the backyard is now ready for such fun. A   fun kiddie swimming pool was also inflated in the yard so the kids can frolic around .

Sitara’s first year of junior KG was ended on Thursday 28 June and now she has no school during the summer months – so she will be spending time at her baby-sitter (Jeannett) home in Deep River – once again with Sachin -as he goes thee regularly.   This day (Thursday 28 June)-in the afternoon-   Sachin went to Ottawa with his dad to consult a dentist specialist for Sachin’s teeth growth.

Sunday 2012 July 01 to Sunday 15 July

This was a momentous time for the kids.

1) They have got a huge trampoline installed by their dad in the front yard close to their   “swing and slide set “.
”   A trampoline is a device consisting of a piece of taut, strong fabric stretched over a steel frame using many coiled springs.   People bounce on trampolines for recreational and competitive purposes.”

The kids enjoy the bouncing on the trampoline along with their parents (mostly mom) and occassionally with their nani when she visits them

2) The outdoor ground area at the back is in turmoil as renovation work around the ” in-ground pool” is being carried out. The new pavement blocks and pathway was installed and many trees were removed.   The support system below the Hot Tub is now rebuilt with a crib filled with gravel etc.   The deck is also resupported at the Gazibo end by putting in a sauna tube concrete support.

3) The kids spent two nights in Deep River with nana/nani on Saturday/Sunday   14/15 July – a sleep over as their parents were going to Ottawa to attend a wedding of one of their dad’s colleagues.

Sitara along with Sachin played outdoors on Saturday with their nana being with them.   However , an enthusiatic run was being made by both of them to water the plants ( using available pitchers ) – even warned by nana not to run. Sitara suddenly took a full pitcher of water and ran to the front to water the plants in the   pots.   Unfortunately she toppled/tripped over on the concrete path in the front and   bruised herself at 3 different places but fortunately it was minor bruises and her nani applied first-aid – and bandages .

She was herself in no time.

Thursday 19 July 2012

Sachion was treated by his family ( dad, mom & Sitara) to a fishing experience close to home in Mackey.   This was his becoming 3 and maturing as ayoung boy.

Friday 20 July 2012

HAPPY BIRTHDAY our handsome grandson – being 3 now can be very exhilarating.     Sachin birthday was celebrated by family at Mackey – only his family and nana/nani . His SunirMama phoned from USA (he was trevelling on business there).   Lots of fun had all the members of the family. Sachin got lots of presents – a “Thomas Engine” backpack   and a Thomas train toy from nana/nani and many other Thomas themed toys from his family.     Sitara was just enjoying the ocassion .

Sachin’s nana is not feeling well since last week   . He has fullness in his ear and the right ear a bit soar (flaming) and thus he has a bit of   unsteadiness in his feet. He is under medication.

Saturday 21 July 2012

Some   6 families with young kids (of Sachin’s age) came to celebrate Sachin’s birthday   at Mackey. It was a ” pool party” .

Note: The pool was having a hiccup a day before as the pump for cleaning/circulating water kept out . Sachin is fortunate that his dad is a handyman and he managed to repair the pump after getting to Pembroke & back (2 1/2 hours on the road) to pick-up parts .

The party was a success with a  cake (for his birthday) in the form of   a “Thomas train” – baked by his mom.

Nana/nani then came home after the party as nana had to rest .

Saturday 4 August 2012

A party for Sitara at Mackey – she is growing fast. She will be 5 year old tomorrow ( 5 August ). A beautiful August day. Bright and sunny. Nana/nani went to Mackey early to help set up for the party. Nana is still in ear pain (right ear) and on anti-biotic) but that did not faze him. Helped to blow up baloons and then went out to hang these as markers (for the guests) on the road to the house.   Nani helped to look after Sachin & Sitara before the guests arrive.
Her mom had lost her voice ( a day before) but she was   go-go -go. She had baked a beautiful pink cake ( the princess – some 10 inches tall) .
The swimming pool was all ready – her dad was out   in the yard to make sure that it is functioning well.

Sitara played with her friends and then all went for swimming – kids and their parents . Sachin & Sitara were accompanied by their dad in the pool
Lots of gifts —   all pertaining to 5 year old girl.   The day ended with afternoon swim by Nina & kids.   Both Sitara & Sachin did jumping (multiple times) into the pool without any fear . They had a great swim in the afternoon also after the guests left.

Nana/nani also left early as they were to go to a birthday party (for Anjani – becoming 60).

Later in the night kids and parents also came to Deep River – to watch the fireworks   (all part of Summerfest in Deep River) . Nani joined them at the campus to watch the fireworks. Nana stayed home to relax.
Sunday 5 August 2012

To-day is Sitara’s birthday . She along with Sachin came to Deep River   (with their parents) and spent time at the campus to enjoy Summerfest activities. All went to Keys Complex(old school building but now AECL offices) in the evening to join to watch Planeterium (sky full of stars) put on by Science North & sponsored by CNS.

After dinner , family gifts   to Sitara were opened by her . Nana’s card had a poem written by nana for her .

After some play , the kids were put to bed in Deep River while their parents went back to campus to participate/watch   in Musical on stage. The kids were then picked up by their parents after mid-night and then to Mackey. Monday being a public holiday and their mom not working ( each alternate week-end she does not work) – so the kids did not sleep over in Deep River.

Saturday 11 August 2012

This day Sitara and Sachin   were with their mom & nani to visit AECL   plantsite in Chlak River. It was an open house where more than 2000 people paid avisit. Both kids had lpts of fun. Their dad was called in early in the morning to go to some emergency work at Chalk River site and thus could not be with the kids. Their nana joined them a bit later as he had to go to a function in Deep River at 10.00 am – to give prize to a physics 2012 graduate of DRSA .

Then the kids spent a night sllep over at nana/nani home as their parents had a party at Mackey for adults only.

On Sunday 12 August, their dad came over at lunch time and joined the family for lunch. Their mom had stopped over earlier in the morning before going to work.   After lunch, all went to Ushaben’s home for meeting their grandkids (Priyanka’s daughter and son) . Both the kids had great time . Their mom had joined them after 5.00 -that is after work.   After comimg to theri nana/nanai home – they then were gone to Mackey with their parents   (after some meal).

On Monday 13 August, the kids were dropped off to their baby-sitter (Jennette) by their mom ( Note: Sitara is having summer break from her junior KG class) . However, their nana/nani had to collect them at 5.00 pm as their dad got called in to work a bit late at work. He collected them after dinner.

Note:

1) Since about 10 days or so, Sitara has figured out how to power up my computer & let it boot properly. She knows how to navigate and go to my ‘favourites’ and pick up her program (from the whole list of my favourite sites) to enjoy on the computer.   She also knows how to shut the computer but normally she keeps it open.

2) On Tuesday 14 August 2012 , Sachin had noticed the way to lock from inside – the downstairs bathroom at Deep River (nana/nani) home and went to his “potty” for the big one there , locked the door from inside and managed to do his “big one” on his own. Nana discovered that (after nani opened the door using a knife) advised him not to lock the door as it is not safe. He is 3 year old and getting mature .

3) On Thursday 16 August 2012, he has graduated out of the diapers ( at least at few trial times)   and gone over to wearing ” pull – ups” . He is so proud of that.

Tuesday 21 August 2012

The kids came to Deep River   at about 11.00am with their mom and wanted to set-up a “Lemondade stand” outside at the raod. Nani became busy to collect the change in money (busting all piggy banks – kids) to help the paymnet transaction – if any change is required by upon purchase of lemonade and/or cookie by their customers .

Their mom helped to set-up the “Lemondade Stand” with a table and two chiars for the kids. Cash Box ( in the form of bowls) were   set-up.

Their nana bought the lemondade and neighbors came along to support the business venture. Their dad also came from the office to give boost morale .

The kids and especially their mom had a great time   – nana/nani helping where needed and savouring a very joyful moment. Nana contributed by getting “subway” sandwiches (from Deep River Subway) for the adults and chicken nuggets and french fries (from Burger King) for the kids.

Final tally made by their mum   showed a profit of $5.00 per each kid. All money went back into the piggy bank for each kid.

Tuesday 28 August 2012

Nana/nani spent the day with kids at Mackey (after their return from Toronto – where they had gone earlier to attend the wedding of Maya’s aunt -her mother’s sister)   . The kids were at Driftwood park before lunch   -where nana/nani joined them. They were taken there by their mom -so thay can enjoy their tri-cycles on tarmac road there around the Driftwood gate.   It is safe and good locale.

After lunch – the kids, their nani   and mom went into pool – all having fun and frolicking. Nana did not go in the pool as he is still not recovered from his ear imbalance .   After the pool, there was dinner – and oh yes, a celebration for their parents 8th Anniversary. It was very joyful – with two cakes – one by the kids (from Valumart in Deep River) and the second one baked by their nani.

Sitara gave her mom/parents gift on behalf of both kids.   The kids also got present from their nana/nani, Sitara – a nice silky dress and Sachin – two t-shirts   – one short sleeve and another long sleeve.

From Sunday 9 September 2012 to Sunday 14 October 2012

Most of the kids activities are described in my Post on my website titled:

” A Visitor comes to Town – My brother (Kanti) visited Canada .”

Please do refer to that. They were excited to make acquaintance with my brother (Kanti) from a far land . He was their “Mota Nana” – a granduncle. They played with him and were always looking forward to be with him.

Tuesday 6 November 2012

This day Sitara sprained her left foot ankle -while playing at the playground at Mckenzie Community School in Deep River. She goes there for her KG class.

The sprained ankle was bandaged when her mom brought her home.     She was otherwise okay. The sprain was minor but on Wednesday she skipped the school and stayed with her nana/nani in Deep River.   Also she skipped the class on Thursday and stayed with her mom& Scahin at Mackey.

She recovered and went back to school on Friday 9 November 2012.   On Fridat Sachin spent the day at his nana/nani home as the kids mom had gone to North Bay for having to put “snow tyres” on her Psssat Car (this Friday Nina had a free day from work) . Alos the kids dad had gone to Ottawa on business.   Sitara was brought to nana/nani home by her dad (after he returned from Ottawa) in the evening . All had a great time – playing and general fun.   After dinner, the kids went back to Mackey with their dad.

Sunday 11 November 2012

Having participated in the Deep River Unity In Diversity dinner on Saturday (10 November 2012) at the Lions Club in Chalk River   – the kids next day went to Ottawa with their parents – to celebrate their dad’s birthday.

To celebrate the day , they were entertained and taken to see the “Pantomime”

Here is what their mom wrote on her Facebook entry :

” Awesome Pantomime in Ottawa today!! Sitara sat right in the front and asked when she could be in a show too. Sachin got right into it Booing all the villains emphatically and dancing in the isle! Can’t wait until next year!”
A   description of the Pantomime

Puss in Boots – Pantomime – A family holiday tradition in Britain, the audience is encouraged to cheer for the good guy, boo at the bad guy and even sing along. Adults will love the double entendre, cross dressing actors and local humour. Children will adore the slapstick chases, larger than life animals and general buffoonery. Children, parents and grandparents will laugh until their sides hurt!

Tuesday 20 November 2012

This day both nana/nani returned back from Toronto – having gone there on Friday 16 November 2012 to attend a conference by nana – ( PEO Chapters Leaders Conference and OSPE Award Gala – staying at Toronto Airport Marriott Hotel on Friday & Saturday and then on Sunday/Monday with Maya and her parents (Sunir/Shannon) .

They returned early by 3.00 p.m as Sachin was to come to nana/nani home   – his mom dropped him at about 3.30 pm -and then went to pick up Sitara from school and then take her for the swimming .

Nana was in his computer room when Sachin came over. He was welcomed by his nani . After that Sachin came over   surreptitiously downstairs to the computer room and very politely told his nana that he wants to play with his nana. So his nana goes upstairs with Sachin – there thay play together with play cars and trucks for about   half an hour or so.

Sachin tells his nana that his (nana’s) tea is   ready – his nani had asked him to tell nana about the tea ( by the way at that time his nani was outdoors – sweeping the footpath in front of the house – there were so many squashed cherry blossoms from the tree on the front yard) . So both nana & sachin go in the kitchen and sit atb the table for tea & cookies. Of course Sachin did not have tea but his chocolate milk ( he knew about that- which he had brought with himself from McDonald’s – after his music class in Petawawa and had put the chocolate milk bottle in the Refrigerator) .

After the tea (or milk) & cookies – both retired to Sachin’s room – where they played for a while with soft brown football and as nana was tired from long travel from Toronto – he lies down on the bed with Sachin tucked along with him   . Now the fun starts – nana asked Sachin whether he wants to have any books read. So he collects two (2) Thomas   character books – which are his favourite       . Now nana askes him – would he likes to read those to nana – oh please read to me – says his nana as he was feeling tired from long drive and appreciate the books read to him.

So Sachin – forever a considerate grandson – first get the blankets cover properly over – one for each one and then asks nana to pull the dark curtain down so there is no outside light streaming in the room . Then we have the side light on – Sachin does read the books for nana – of course he really cannot read at his age but he reads by making out story of Thomas looking at all the pictures in each book . And when he completes the first book (in his own   way – making out a nice story) he ends the” book reading ” with an   expression “The End” . He does that for both books as he ends each book.   After the story nana turns over and shuts the side light out and tries to go to sleep . Sachin also goes to sleep . So nana had the best sleep -snooze of the day , week , month , year etc.
What a grandson! – so polite and considerate.

After that his dad came over (when his workday was over ) and then his mom & Sitara came from swimming . When nana woke up – Sitara was in the bathtub having her bath after swimming . Sachin was waken up a bit later by his dad for dinner.   However, plan changed a bit – Sachin went with his dad to Valumart for Grocery Shopping . Others started the dinner and then when Sachin came back from Valumart – his dad & him joined in at the dinner table.

Sitara finished her dinner and so did her nana. Then her nana read her one book (Pinky & Rex) propr to him goinmg way for playing Duplicate bridge ( card   game) at the Luthren Church   on Avon Street.

Saturday 24 November 2012

This day was a packed day for the kids.   After the gym in the morning at Petawawa, they went to Pembroke to watch the play ” The Little Mermaid”   at the Festival Hall (401 Isabella St., Pembroke) at 2.00 p.m in the afternoon with theri parents. Their nana/nani also joined them   to the play. It was very entertaining play by volunteers (mostly kids) from pembroke. After the play, they went with their parents to Tim Horton (on Pembroke St where also the   East Side Mario restaurant is locate) for refreshment and their nana/nani went to Home Depot to buy an outdoor carpet ( 3 ft * 4 ft) -the carpet for the patio in the front of the house in Deep River.   Their nana/nani joined them at Tim Horton and at 5.45 went out to the Pembroke St to watch the Santa parade – which was well done with many lighted floats – some like Thomas engine and boats . So kids were again busy watching the parade – thoug h it was cold and breezee . Thanks to their parents that they had brought correct winter clothing for the kids. Their nana/nani got cold and watched the parade for a short time and then retired to the car for warmth. This is waht their mom wrote on her Facebook   ” Froze out bums off at the Carribean Santa Claus parade in Pembroke.”
After the parade was over-a bout 6.30 pm – all went (trooped in) to East Side Mario for dinner. Both kids had a great time having dinner and after dinner they went home (to deep River) with their mom & nani ( in their nana’s car) and there they went to sleep . Their dad & nana went in their parents car to Petawawa to pick up a painting commissioned ( by their parents ) from an artist living in Petawawa .   The commissioned painting is called ” Calming Sunset On The Water ” painted by Nina’s friend and an artist Ms Denise Lenoir.

While the kids were having their sleep at nana/nani home, their parents went for a dance party at Deep River Legion hall   . This is what their mom wrote on her Facebook ” And had a fun night out dancing with friends in DR…all in all a fun but full day! ” .

After the fun night and dancing, theeri parents came over to nana/nani home after mid-night and picked   up the kids (still sleeping) and drove them to Mackey.
Next day on Sunday ,the following was entered into their mom’s Facebook .

“Christmas light have been hung. Getting yard work done. Enjoyjng this gorgeous day outside after the first snowfall of the season! Maybe I can convince someone to put the tree up today too…”
and separately
“the kids are cleaning their rooms so they can have one tree in their rooms then i am dragging the tree upstairs. Sunj is under the deck wiring up the hottub for so we can use it this winter. 🙂:)“
Between   Saturday 24 November 2012 & Tuesday 26 December 2012
The kids were as usual busy with their swimming, music and gymansics sessions till all outside planned activities stopped for the Christmas   holidays.
They spent some days and  nights (sleep over) with nana/nani – when that become suitable or when the parents were away. The kids loved to have a sleep over at their nana/nani home
On Saturday 15 December 2012 — Nina & kids came over (and thus slept over) as the electric power was gone off -all over Renfrew and beyond– on Friday evening (and the next day Sunjay had to go to work at 7.30 am – some emergency at work place) and thus the house at Mackey did not have water and it was getting a bit cold as heating was off due to power failure.
The Deep River power was restored earlier so it was safer to be in Deep River.   Sunjay also worked on Sunday but that day Mackey power was restored so all went back to Mackey on Sunday evening after dinner at nana/nani home.
Mackey house have a diesel Generator but it was not started for it was not thought necessary (expecting that power will be restored soon – which it was not)   and Sunjay had to to work early on Saturday.
Apart from  the above disruption (which included  a nice “sleep over” at nana/nani’s) – the kids   – both Sitara & Sachin – at other times  went for skating, skiing and spent time making ‘Snowman’ and by and large enjoying the winter and snow.
They also went to many Christmas parties as well as shopping with their parents. I am sure thay saw and chatted up many Santa Clauses and Sitara also wrote to the Santa Clause at North Pole – from whom she received a reply .
To top it all up – one of Sitara’s painting at her KG class (at MacKenzie Community School) was one of those got picked for publication in the local newspaper (North Renfrew Times) – Christmas pull out section-   of Wednesday 19 December 2012   and she was very happy about that . Both parents   and grandparents were very proud – for her first Newspaper entry. Besides, her painting was in the NRT edition in which one of her nana’s “Letter To Editor” article was also published – re: his anguish at the Shooting at the NewPort School .
Sachin was all excited about the Christmas – at 3 1/2 , he dreams of many toys but also this time he was taken (mesmerised) in by a ” stuffed seahorse” and was asking his mom as where is the Seahorse’s mummy. So Nina went overdrive and spent many happy hours (went in the wee hours)   – finding/developing a design and pattern and then sewing/making a   “mummy seahorse ” – all blue and really a fit to the already existing Sachin’s   baby “stuffed seahorse’.   On Christmas day he got his surprise and went to sleep with these in his arms.
On Tuesday’s   Christmas Party at one of our friends in Deep River (Sam, Kamla & their daughters Asha & Roopa) , both kids had a fun night. They were coddled and played with by all those who were present but by both Asha & Roopa. Also there were Kevin & Hiten ( two brothers) – whom Sitara know from before. Both Sachin & Sitara were very comfortable playing with these 4 youngsters along with the adults present there .

Book Reading -Miscellaneous Books Read (2012)

General Comment: As mentioned earlier  posts, I have embarked on writing a few words on all the books that I may read in my retirement.

Since 2011, I have refrained to read serious books – on politics, spirituality, philosophy, society etc but I like to read -so I have gone reading light books to entertain me.

Both my kids have got KINDLE (electronic reading) but i have not . The younger lot like gadgets – new ones all the times but senior like me is finding that to be a bit overwhelming.

These days I am in Mystery books . I have reverted to my teenage passion.

The first book I read after the new year 2012 is Agatha Christie book – which I bought for a   dollar from the local (deep River) library, They are discarding many old books .

The book title is ” Five Little Pigs” .This is about a painter (Amyas Crate) who was murdered and his wife got charged and convicted a   murderer BUT after 16 years had passed – her   daughter (Carla) – who was in her early teens and was on thye cusp of marriage – was not comfortable that her mother was convicted as a murderer and she wanted to find the truth behind the case.   She engaged the famous & brilliant detective ” Hercule Poirot” to unravel begind the case. He set about interviewing the  old companions of the painter and then lo behold found the Carla’s mother was innocent and the  another lady (whose picture the painter was painting) killed him.

The next two books i have recently completed are Perry Mason books. The local librarian had NOT heard about thsio famous fictitious Lawyer – whose books were vary pupular when I was teenager. So I got two books using the “Inter-library” system.

All Perry Mason books are written by Erle Stanley Gardner .

The first Perry Mason book I read recently is ” The Case of the Half-wakened Wife”   – a paper back book from Greater Madawaska Public Library, Calabogie, ON.

The second Perry Mason book I read recently is The Case of Foot-Loose Doll ” –   a hard cover book from Alliston Public Library , Alliston, ON. This is also a large letter book for visually impaired.

I just finished reading the book called ” Evolution ” by Stephen Baxter. This book I bought at the Deep River Library at their Book Sale   about 10 days before.   This is a book in a novel format written based on evolution of mankind. Stretching from the distant past into the remotefuture, from primordial Earth to the stars . Evolution is   soaring symphony of struggle, extinction, and survival.

It was slow read but interesting. The book travelled with me to Toronto on May11-13 where I (with Mrs) had gone   to attend an AGM for my Engineering Association . We also spent time with our son, daughter-in-law and Maya (our lovely youngest granddaughter) .

To-day I completed reading   the book titled ” Bloodletting & Miraculous Cures ” by Vincent Lam loaned to me by my daughter a few days ago.   The book is centered on medical career and   life experiences in providing   medical treatment by young doctors in Toronto .     NotE: To-day is Nina’s birthday and thus this is a nice present to her – my completing   reading of the book.

Earlier   I had completed the following Agatha Christie books (prior to completing the reading of ” Bloodletting & Miraculous Cures ” by Vincent Lam.

– The mirror CRACK’d from side to side.

– Murder with Mirror.

I have also started on the book ” Every Breath You take ” by Ann Rule – which is a true story of obsession, revenge, and murder. This is a difficult book to read – no! no! – the writing is   good and with easy flow but the human evil – a real case – is difficult on the mind and very aggrevating . Thus i have only read half the book and have diverted myself to other books as described above.

Tuesday 26 December 2012

I completed reading the book titled ” The In-between World of Vikram Lall” by M G Vasangi – our Indaim famous writer – two time Giller Prize winner. This book took me to a nostalgia tour of my past – being born and brought up in Kenya and eventually migrating to Canada.   The author currently lives in Toronto – not very far from where my son (Sunir) lives.

Thursday 22 December 2011

Only few days  left for the Christmas Day celebrated as by  the Christians.    However this celebration is also weaved into festivities by non-Christians also all over the world. It is getting to be the end of the Calender year  and this leads to holiday spirit to ring in the new year.

It is about this time many people go on vacation to travel to be with their  family (who may be in different city, province or country.)   With this sort of social movement at this time. Sitara/Sachin’s baby-sitter and family took time off to go away from Deep River  to be with their family. So both kids were a bit stranded when their dad was  working on Thursday & Friday  ( some people have to work to keep the society functioning) .

Well not quite – their nana/nani were very pleased to have Sachin spend the day with them (brought by his mom – who has a free day) on Thursday and Sitara joining them after the school . Sitara was picked up from school by her mom (as she skipped using the school bus as she really cannot dis-embark at her baby-sitter’s home – as the baby-sitter & family had gone away for Christmas)  .In the evening their  dad joined in after work -all had good dinner.

It was fun the whole day playing with Sachin – who is very mature for his age – likes to talk with his nana/nani & also express his love for nana/nani often times. He is a gentle kid -always with a chuckle and engaging eyes.   In the evening after dinner, both Sachin & his sister Sitara had a ball playing together and also with their nana/nani . want to play “monster chasing”   and sliding over nana’s legs/feet.

Both kids spent a sleep-over at their nana/nani   – this gives them fun time with their nana/nani and also a respite to their parents in the morning when Sitara has to be got ready for school and then brought to her baby-sitters home (where Sitara  picks her school bus) . However, her baby-sitter was not  available on Friday   23 Dec 2011 (as they had gone away for Christmas) . So her nana took her to school on Friday at 9.00 am and dropped her right at the ‘Kiddie park’ where they play before junior KG class starts.   She got picked from the school by her dad  . Their mom was working this day and thus could not join in for dinner but kids, their dad & nana/nani had dinner together and after that lots of fun playing different games.   They went to Mackey with their dad) (at about   8.30 pm) – they really want to spend more time with their nana/nani and they try to delay but ultimately they had to go as they need their rest and sleep.

Sunday 25 December 2011

It was the Christmas day ( Santa day) for the kids and their parents. Both nana/nani went to Mackey at 11.30 am to have fun with the kids when opening their gifts . The kids had many gifts from their parents , from each other and from their nana/nani.

Before lunch -all had a few photos taken around the lighted Christmas tree  and then the gifts were opened. Kids were waiting patiently for this moment  – good kids . They are well behaved and loved the gifts – each one of them – there were many different types. Sachin really enjoyed the stuffed Dinosaur as well as a  huge mechenical Dinosaur  – making deep threatening sound. Sitara had a remote control car to play with. Both also had a train-set (which run with hand manipulation – no battery )- a big one all installed on a table ( the table came with the train set) . All assembled by their dad the previous day .

After that all had lunch and then few play momnets with nana/nani – then Sachin went for his normal afternoon nap . Sitara then played with her mom, and with her nana or nani and by herself.     After Sachin woke up, both kids played with their nana/nani .

After dinner , all were getting a bit tired . nana/nani left for Deep River and kids got ready for their rest for the night.

Holiday schedule after having spent a delightful  Christmas Day on Sunday 25 December 2011 at Mackey with kids and their parents.

Monday 26 December 2011   – SunirMama/ShannonMami along with Maya drove to Huntsville (on their way to Deep River) and spend a night with Shannon’s maternal grandparents . Maya had a great time being coddled by her great grandparents .

Sitara & Sachin rested at their home (in Mackey) with their parents  –after a hectic, exciting and joyful Christmas Day with so many different gifts.

Nana/nani rested at their home in Deep River – and  also making preparation (making bed ready and living room ready for Maya) to make SunirMama/ShannonMami’s visit to Deep River/Mackey and area comfortable and pleasant.

Tuesday 27 December 2011 – Maya arrived in Deep River a bit late in the afternoon with her parents – all drove safely to the destination.

All got relaxed- parents had light lunch ( vegetable soup – freshly made ) and Maya – in her usual smiling way settled down well .

Both Sitara & Sachin came over in the evening with their parents ( after having first gone to a party – at one of their friend’s home in Deep River) . All had dinner together . Both Sitara & Sachin having completely awed by their SunirMama & ShannonMami and also with Maya. They just adore Maya and   coddled her and played with her – but also their Mama & mami played with them and had great bonding interactions ( as usual) .

Kids went home late in the evening – having stayed longer than usual to enjoy and play with Maya and with their Mama & Mami.   The weather was aweful with wet snow on the ground.

Wednesday 28 December 2011 – kids stayed home with their dad as their mom was working on this day and their Mama/Mami – along with Maya- spent time with kids’ nana/nani ( Sunir’s parents) in Deep River . It was a quiet day .

Thursday 29 December 2011 – kids were delighted to come over to Deep River – a bit before lunch- with their parents. They had a lovely time playing with and coddling Maya and also them being coddled by their Mama/Mami.   After wonderful lunch, theafternoon was fun except Sachin was to have his usual afternoon  nap  (in the temporary playpen – being set up in nana’s computer room) .     Sitara did craft work with her ShannonMami .

This day was a celebratory day as the family were to exchange gifts for holidays (this is the second gift giving – this is becoming a tradition   ) First on Christmas Day – celebrated in Mackey – for Sitara/Sachin there were gifts galore and now today – more gifts from their Mama/Mami & family.   Maya had her gifts on Christmas Day – celebrated at her grandparents (Shannon’s parents) in Toronto before driving next day to Huntsvile and then afterwards to Deep River .

Both kids were excited as gift were exchanged before Sachin was to go for his afternoon nap. Both Sitara & Sachin got wonderful gits from their Mama/Mami

Baby Maya too got great gifts from her cousins, Fuva ( uncle) & Fai (Aunt) .

In the evening all had a great dinner together  with cheers (with wine) .   The kids stayed longer than usual again before returning  to Mackey  with  their parents.   The weather was aweful with wet snow on the ground .

Friday 30 December 2011

Kids came over to Deep River with their mom ( their dad to come later after finishing some work at home) to play with Maya and their Mama/Mami.  Both nana/nani took a breather – only to be there to provide any supporting role.   Mama/Mami had gone for cross-country skiing when the kids arrived at Deep River home.   But they did come back from skiing within half hour .   Kids dad joined in later when lunch was served.

The afternoon went as usul with merry making- playing with Maya, Sitara & Sachin   (as became necessary or as wanted by each adult or kid) . Of Course Sachin had his usual afternoon nap.

All kids were a delight.   There is o much politeness and smiles . Maya gave many conversation style noises and smiles.

After dinner, all went home to Mackey – this evening they went a bit early than usual as kids’ parents  were making preparation for the New Year eve  bash (to welcome the new year 2012) to which the whole family was participating -next day on Saturday 31 December 2011.

Saturday 31 December  2011

This is the final day of the year 2011. The kids stayed  in Mackey with their parents  – later in the morning joined by their nana/nani  and also by Maya & her parents ( Kids’ Mama/Mami) .

As usual all had great lunch, played with kids (Sitara, Sachin & Maya)    and  Sachin had afternoon nap -his normal  ) not too much this day –   as he was very excited for fun with all the visitors  to celebrate the last day of the year.

After dinner and some playing with kids – at 10.00 pm – the adults decied to welcome the new year at that time rather   than waiting till mid-night -as the kids had to go to sleep – so using technology – the welcome fireworks were shown from TV ( taped from places like Sydney in Australia) as they get their new year earlier than the northern    people -the kids were shown this welcome of new year on TV – everyone welcomed the new year and gave cheers to each other .

The kids then went to bed after a bit of coaxing by parents.

Both nana/nani & Mama/mami & Maya spent the night at Mackey .

Sunday 1 January 2012

Welcome  New Year 2012 .     In the morning kids got up and Maya was as usual up early – all just had great joyful interaction.

After breakfast -a BlacK Forest cake   (baked by kid mom) was brought out. This was not cut the previous night as it was thought appropriate it have it cut on the first day of 2012 – and also it helps to keep the kids away from eating sweets late in the evening before going to sleep .

The cake was cut with much gusto and fun. Sitara helped to cut and distribute the cake for enjoyment. Both Sitara and Sachin enjoyed partaking of the cake – so did the adults.     After that their SunirMama/ShannonMami got into the car with Maya and left for Huntsville and then onwards to Toronto – to return to their home.     Both nana/nani also then left for Deep River.

Tuesday 3 January 2012

The kids went to Ottawa with their parents for a few days – for vacation.

Friday 6 January 2012   –  It seems that the kids are a having a ball of a time in Ottawa per photos etc on their mom’s Facebook entry.

They have been to Museum of Nature, Reptile Musuem etc and have enjoyed all the different animals as well as various dinosaurs sketletons and  other features.

Tuesday 10 January 2012

This day kids’ mom (Nina) went for downhill skiing lesson after dinner at nana/nani home in Deep River  . The kids had a great time at nana/nani home but they went to Mackey early with their dad (after theri mom left for skiing lesson)  .

Saturday 14 January 2012

This day Sachin came to Nana/nanai home early in the morning – dropped by his parents when they were going to Ottawa with Sitara. Sitar had a doctor’s appointment for allergy tests.   Sachin brought lots of fun and livened up Saturday for his nana/nani.

Here are the results of Sitara’s allergy test – doen by Dr. Ham Pong.

The below is the message from Sitara’s mom by e-mail.

Heya. Ya we saw Dr Ham Pong today. He cleared up a lot of questions. Sitara`s allergy to Cashew is worse than her peanut. Wheal size of the Cashew scratch test was 11mm and 7mm for peanut. This time she was not allergic to dairy, eggs or almonds somehow. I kinda find that strange since it has only been one month since the last test. She is not allergic to almonds. The results of the RAST test are as follows: Almonds = 0 (not allergic); Hazelnut = 0; Walnut = 3 (high); Cashew = 3; Pecan = 3; Peanut = 3. He said that the RAST tests were promising and that she may out grow the allergies in the coming years. We will take her back in Jan 2013. So his official statement was that she has a Cashew, Peanut, Pistachio (related to cashew) allergy and to avoid tree nuts at the moment.

Sachin was as ususal very loving and playful. He did puzzles and some art work. Played hide & seek ( he likes to play out  “Bad Wolf” from 3 Little Pigs scenerio – for the hide & seek game  ) .   Always polite and lots of ” I love you ” nana   or nani.   He went home late about 10.00 pm picked up by his parents – arriving back from Ottawa.

It was a cold day  outside – temperature  below – 20 degrees – thus Sachin stayed indoors .

Tuesday 17 January 2012

This day winter really arrived . Sachin had come home with his mom and waas just happy to be with his nana/nani . Played with both nana/nani – puzzles, and miscellanous toys etc. Afternoon had his usual nap when his mom went for a dental. Sitara was at school and was picked up by her mom at late afternoon.

She was playful when she came but was showing a bit sulkiness at dinner time. It was rather very taxing if she does not eat   normally. It so happened that         she must have picked a bug for stomach flu and she later threw up on the living room carpet and all that .   Her nana was away at that time – having gone for his bridge card game.  Her mom was not there either having gone for downhill ski lesson .   After bridge session, nana came home & started to shovel the driveway ( high pile of snow to-day) & then When Kids’s mom came back from her ski lesson, she  joined in to help shovelling the snow – which then was  aggain helped by kids’ nani who came oput to help also. It was a storm with lots of snow. So three people shovelling snow – helped to do the job faster even when the Municiplaity Road crew threw more snow on the driveway.

The kids and parents spent the night in Deep River as there was lots of snow falling and due to accident -the Hwy 17 was  and further the road leading (from Hwy 17) upto Mackey house  would not have been plowed at that time.

So it was prudently decided to stay over in Deep River .

However, next day (Wednesday 18 January) Sitara was   still feeling down and lo behold – Sachin also got the bug and he   threw up and then also had diahorreal attack too.   Both kids were down- their mom was worried that the contagion do not spread specially to their nani as well as nana.   Both parents had to go to work   but nana brought  disinfectant (Lysol & also Clorox liquid from Valumart early in the morning  ) – spread the Lysol on all knobs , railings and wgereever. Cleaned all chairs, tables etc where kids may have  been with Clorox.       Nani   remained busy cleaning up carpet and verious cloths , towels etc to get the germs eliminated.

Kids were weak but very understanding and trying not to give much trouble to their nana/nani . They did not get anything to eat except some water – 2 figerful only (with pulpless orange juice) . However, Sitara had two slices of raisin bread after she    woke up – without any milk .     This did not remained in her   stomach for too long.   She was cool – had her nana read at least three books in the Rec Room downstairs  – she played and made puzzles – all with calmness even when her stomach was upset . She had endurance .     After a   while – the whole shabhang came out upstairs in the living room carpet . The carpet and all the towels- which were kept ready in case – were needed cleaning  – keeping nani busy  .

Sachin was  a bit whining but remained   otherwise  cool . Both kids were also kept entertained by TV . Their dad came home at lunch time – had taken afternoon off to look after the kids. The kids are fortunate to have loving parents  . Their dad then took them to Mackey just  after 1.00 pm – so they can ret in their bed and  recover there.

Their mom came to Deep River home after her work ( late in the evening about 9.30 pm) and she wanted to be sure that all is okay – she sanitized Sachin’s crib  (with Lysol –  wiping all over ) before going to Mackey  .  She wanted to do her best that kids’ nana/nani do not catch the bug.

The next week upto Thursday 25 January 2012

The kid’s dad got down with stomach flu   and kids and their mom came and bunked at nana/nani home for two nights ( Tuesday & Wednesday). The kids parents lost their Saab car (on Monday – after the kids were picked up by their dad from the baby-sitter) due to clutch mechanism failure – they used nana/nani spare car ( Chryslar maroon mini-van) . The Saab was ready by Thursday (25 January). Dad recovered in two days . Sitara stayed home on Thursday – has sniffling cough.

This week their cousin Maya’s mom (in Toronto) also was down with flu and Maya’s dad had to take a couple of days off work to stay home to look after Maya and her mom.

Monday 23 January 2012

This day saw a frightening expereince for the kids. The road from Mackey to Deep River was slippery due to wet snow falling. Theri mom was hit with black ice – car skidded and went around gfew times on the road – lucky that there was no traffic in the morning on the road – so all ended okay fianaly – a relef to all.

Kids were a bit frighetened especially Sitara   as she is now 41/2   years old and can see / understand the danger.

Sunday 29 January 2012

Both nana/nani had gone to Toronto on Friday 27 January – nana had an Engineering Congress to attend and thus used this time also to visit the kids’ cousin Maya and their Mama/Mami

While nana/nani were away- kids had a great time sking on Sunday at Mount Martin Ski Hill in Deep River. This is what Sachin’s mom wrote on her Facebook about Sachin’s enjoyment.

” Is so proud of little Sachin. He skiied down the hill about 6 or 7 times this weekend (a lot for a 2 year old) exclaiming to everyone “I was up there (pointing to the top of the hill) and now I’m down here!!!” He was all smiles and full of pride! 🙂     “

Of Course, Sitara is skiing like a pro these days. She enjoys skiing- and that is good for a Canadian girl – growing in a snowbound country – this sport will keep her getting entertained always.

Tuesday 7 January 2012

Oh! this day Sunjay found out from Deep River hospital ER visit that he has inflamed appendix – needs to be operated on. So he had surgery at Pembroke General Hospital at 5.00 pm and was back at home next day in the evening.

So on Tuesday  , the kids and mom stayed (sleep over) at Deep River with nana/nani .

The kids and parents bunked down at grardparents  – for saftey and healthand comfort.

On Friday 10 January 2012 – kids, their mom and nana/nani went to  Hull at Jacques Cartier Park to be at the SnowFlake Kingdom -as put on every year at that park.   That gave their dad a quiet time at home to rest and recover from his surgery.

Both Sitara and Sachin enjoyed every minute at the Park – ice sculptures , ice slides, Beaver tail snack and Maple Syrup taffy . push ski chair etc,

After time at the park, all went ( at about 7.10 pm ) to a Thai dinner at a Thai restaurant on Carling Road and then returned back to Deep River -close to mid-night.   Note: Somehow Sachin lost one of his favourite (blue) glove . How and where remains a mystery and this was much debated and much effort was expended to search/locate it but to no avail. This gk=love has been located at the Thai restaurant and will be picked up on Feb 23 by nana/nani when they  will visit Ottawa.

Sunjay had to be rushed back to Pembroke  Hospital emergency on Saturday (11 Feb) late night from Mackey ( having gone to Mackey a few hours before) as it found that he was running a 103 degree temperature.   Nina drove him there – and arrived at Hospital just after 1.00 a.m Sunday .   Sunjay remaim at the hospital under care .

Nana/nani went to Mackey at 11.30 p.m to remain with the kids ( they were though sleeping at that time) .

Monday 13 February 2012

Sunjay remain at the hospital under care .   Kids (along with their mom) were sleeping over at Deep River on Sunday. Sitara was helped by her nana to write Valentine cards for her school and other friends.

She can write in her wiggly way and understand the alphabets and words (names) . So she completed her writing with great fun.

Kids and mom went to Mackey in the evening.

Tuesdsay 14 February 2012

Nana had a colonscopy  and getroscopy procedure at Pembroke Hospital where kids’ dad was still recovering from his high tempretaure. Both came home that day – first nana came in the afternoon and kids’s dad came in the evening (picked up by kids’ nana) after his  surgeon gave an okay .

Friday 17 February 2012

Kids travelled to Toronto area with their parents – on holidays.

– first stayed at their Mama/mami place for a night – enjoyed company of Maya (  their cute cousin – abot 6months old)

– on Saturday & Sunday  at their dad’s uncle in Missssauga

– on Monday -they went to Kitchner at their mom’s friend’s ( Mariam) place

-on Saturday 25 February 2012 -they returned back to Mackey.

Their parents also bought a new car (a VW Passat station wagon – four wheel drive)

From   Sunday 26 February 2012 to Thursday 19 April 2012

There is a lot of interface between the kids and grandparents during the above stated time.

They have had a sleep over once. They went to Sudbury with parents (also Jeannette -their baby-sitter- & her family).

They stayed at Towne Place Suites by Marriott Sudbury between Thursday 5 April to 8 April 2012. Kids phoned their nana wishing him a Happy Birthday after arriving back at Mackey on 8 April 2012 . Their nana became 72 year on 8th.

Note: Even Maya was on the phone from Toronto with her daddy/mommy   on 8th to wish her Bapuji a Happy Birthday.

The kids also went to Mackenzie High, Deep River   with their nani and dad on the evening of Wednesday 18 April 2012 to brouse through kids’ books on sale.

Every visit by kids at nana/nani home bring joy and fun to them (nana/nani). Most of times they (kis) are playful   and enjoy playing, painting (with crayons) and Sitara   using nana’s computer for kids PBS site. However during this time the computer was out of commssion a couple of times due to “virus”   attack warning but this was corrected soon .

Saturday 28 April 2012

This day nana/nani went to Mackey to baby-sit the kids as the parents were invited out to their friends – birthday party (in Anthony, I think).   The kids were active. Just physical activities. They   played together like a duo team. They ran arounf using the big toy bus (blue one) as the prop . Sachin   driving it ( paddled with his feet ) while Sitara climbed on top and balanced herself on top when the toy bus moving ( by Sachin’s paddLe power). They did gymanastics -Sitara doing upside stand ( with feet resting on a wall) etc.

They had dinner – had nana read many story books ( mostly Little Miss series books ) and then they went to bed.

However, about 10.00 p.m Sitara woke up with throwing all over on her bed andbeyond. Her nani cleaned hera nd the room & the all the bed sheets , blanket etc and Sitara was resting on the living room sofa – her nana comforting her. But after about   another hour or so – she threw up again – smearing her nana and floor around.   She was comforted , cleaned and then it was decided to giver her a bath -so she is clean of any crud remaing on the body . After her bath, she   went to bed again. Luckily Sachin was asleep when this drama was happening.   Their parenst came home form the party and immediately took care of the house – disinfecting etc as Sitara may have pickedd up a stomach flu from somewhere.

It was decided to separate the kids next day – Sachin was to be brought to nana/nani home . This is precaution so he does not pick-up the stomach flu.

Both Sitara and Sachin enjoyed partaking of the cake – so did the adults.     After that Maya & her parents  into the car  left for Huntsville and then onwards to Toronto – to return to their home.     Both Ba/Bapuji   also then left for Deep River.

Thursday 5 January 2012

This is a milestone day for Maya .After learning and enjoying rolling as demonstrated during her visit to Deep River past week – she has now graduated to having solid food.   Here is what her mom said on her e-mail (subject title being – Maya’s first meal )! of this date.

” Below are a few photos from Maya’s first taste of food last night. (The proportions are 4 parts breastmilk to 1 part rice cereal, so it seems silly to call it starting “solids”!) She really enjoyed it and seemed very interested in the new experience… grabbing for the spoon, banging her fists on the high chair tray, etc. A large proportion of the cereal ended up on the bib, the high chair or her chin, but I think some ended up in her tummy. We will try rice cereal a couple more times and then graduate to bananas!”

Wow!

Friday 27 January 2012

This day Maya’s Ba/Bapuji visited her in the evening at Toronto home – they were in Toronto as her Bapuji had a meeting (at Professional Engineering building at 40 Sheppard Av.,Toronto for Penta Rewgion Congress) . So this was close  to their Hotel ( Novotel, North York) . This day also her dad had a minor surgery on his gums in the mouth – and he was kind of in pain – thus on pain killer medicine.

Maya entertained herself and  all adults by jumping in the Jolly Jumper – with happy screams and fun.

Again, Ba/Bapujui visited Maya and family on Saturday evening and had great time .   Ba/Bapuji still staying at the hotel

On Sunday 29 January 2012 , Maya had gone out in the morning with her parents to a party and returning back at home around 3.00 p.m. Her Ba/Bapuji came after that for a visit and sleep over for the night before returning to Deep River on Monday.     Her other (maternal) grandparents came over for dinner and all had a good (take out East Indian dinner ordered by her mom) dinner together along with Maya. Maya is very comfortbale in her high chair and she eat very satisfactorily while sitting on the chair.

On Monday 30  January 2012, both Ba/Bapuji left early in the morning (a bout 9.00 am) for Deep River- having enjoyed all the fun with Maya and her parents.

Tuesday 31 January 2012

This day was a momentous day for Maya . She cut her first tooth ( just approaching her 6 month birthday in a week) – a middle one in the lower jaw of the mouth. Congratulations.

Tuesday 7 Feb 2011

Maya has achieved her 6 months birthday -and celebrated it with attempting to sit . She did it though for few moments at a time.

From Wednesady 8 February to 19th April 2012.

This is the time Maya started crawling, eating solid food   and just being a great girl.

She has gone to Switzerland with her mommy on Wednesday 18 April 2012 for visting her aunt Erica – who is working there. This is her first air travel.

Her Ba & Bapuji have not seen her since   29 January 2012 but always they were kept informed by her mom with timely photos and crisp tit-tat.

Jusy week or so before, she was a bit sick (mouth being sore) but recovered for the travel.

Wednesday 25 April 2012

It was a pleasant news that   both Maya & her mom (Shannon) arrived safely back from Switzerland yesterday ( 24 April 2012).

As per Maya’s mom :

” We made it home after a long journey yesterday. Maya was very good on the trip, but she is so active so she wasn’t happy to just sit in one place for more than a few minutes! In Zurich airport I discovered a great family lounge with tons of toys, changing tables, high chairs, etc. Unfortunately I only came across this wonder 15 minutes before we had to board, but it helped Maya burn off some steam with some new toys to explore (first picture). On the plane I was very lucky to book an aisle seat in a section of three and the middle seat ended up empty, so Maya had somewhere to sit (second picture), even if it was only for a few minutes at a time! We spent a lot of time walking/crawling up and down the aisles and Maya charmed everyone with her toothy grin 🙂 ”

Sunday 29 April 2012
Since her return back from Switzerland, Maya has been a centre of her dad’s attention. She is being coddled and just getting all the time he can give her even though her parents are busy getting the kitchen area of their hosue being renovated ( by a contractor) . Notwithstanding this is a very involved job (along with other normal jobs) they find and devote good time with Maya.   Maya remains a very joyful and attentitve girl.

On Thursday 26 April 2012 Maya and her mom were very happy to welcome Sunir home   !!! Family reunion!

Note: Sunir had a business (for his company) travel to Texas during the time when Maya & her mom were away in Switrzerland.

Wednesday 30 November 2011

This last day of November 2011 is a memorable one. It brought the first snow of the season –  it was not only snow but wet snow with icy condition. The icy snow clung to tree branches – putting heavy weight   – drooping the tree branches low. Quite a few trees & branches  broke and resulted in widespread power blackout in the area.   Power in Deep River went out sometime around 11.00 a.m. – thus no warm lunch. Kids’ nana made do with a bowl of cereal.   Nani did not even had lunch.   The power was restored sometime about 3.00 p.m . However, the highway  road from Deep River towards Mattawa was blocked and also the road towards Chalk River too   – due to some accidents.

Power in the  kids’ home in Mackey was not restored and the gravel road to their home was blocked by fallen trees and icy snow.   So the kids’ parents decided to stay over the night in Deep River at nana/nani home until the road situation and weather is improved. Nana’s afternoon bridge game in Deep River library was also cancelled due to no light .     So all had a great dinner together and kids played with nana & nani -had books read to them  – all having a jolly time.

Next day –   Thursday 1 December 2011 – Sachin & Nina spent at nana/nani home (being Thursday, Nina being off work as usual) . Sitara went to her junior KG school – taken by her dad in the morning to her Baby-sitter home -from where Sitara takes her school bus after having breakfast at her baby-sitter place.     In the evening, all had dinner together after Sitara came back from school ( having picked up   by her dad from the baby-sitter home) . Sachin had a great time playing at naan/nani home during the day.

Friday 2 December 2011

This day Sitara had a special day .   She was with her dad after school -who took/treated her for dinner at Burger King in Deep River and after that he accompanied her to a play ” Wizard of Oz ” at Childs Auditorium at Mackenzie Community School . This is her second play in  as many  weeks. Last week  she went with her parents & Sachin to see the play called “Alladin” at Pembroke.   Sachin did not go to see Wizard of Oz. He spent the day with his mom in Mackey resting.

Note: Both nana/nani saw the play ” Wizard of Oz” on Saturday .   So on Sunday, tid-bits wwere excahged between them & Sitara – especially about the Witch of the Wild West.

Sunday 4 December 2011

This day was of anticipation . First the kids were to come home in Deep River to help decorate the Christmas tree and then for all to go out in the evening to watch the Deerp River Santa parade.

But also all were waiting anxiously to hear from Toronto that Maya (Kids’ infant cousin) & her parents have come back from Cuba safely and having had a good time there.   Note: At the time when Maya & parents went to Cuba last Saturday- both Maya & her mom (Shannon) were sick & miserable with cold . This had raised a bit of anxiety level in grandparents.

Good news were received  from Toronto in the evening that all have arrived back in Toronto safely and with better health . This topped the day having had good time with Sitara &  Sachin during the day.     Both Sachin & Sitara were excited to decorate the Christmas Tree . Sitara came with her nana downstairs in the basement to collect all the ornaments for decoration . There was lot of jolly time and kids helped to decorate the tree with great aplomb and keen perception for where to put various ornaments.   Each Kid also got a present of a Santa Clause ornament   (red in Santa outfit)  from  their nana/nani but they decided to take these to their own home in Mackey to put the ornament on the Christmas tree there.

In the evening before dinner- all went out to Deep River downtown to watch the Santa parade.   Both Sachin & Sitara were excited- they waited with anticipation to watch the parade. Sachin expressed his thoughts that first  will come Police Car  & then  Santa.   He was right in his deduction.     2 1/2 year old have figured out the sequence.   Both kids played around (while waiting for the parade to come) with other kids who also have come out to watch the parade.

When the parade came around all the kids stood in awe and they were entertained by the various floats and their attendants -who came bearing gifts (of candies) . The parade lasted half hour. The Giant Tiger float was much admired.   Kids, their parents & nana/nani came home after that. All had dinner. The kids were hungry -so much that they ate their food fast and without fuss at all.     After that they all went home to Mackey after spending some time to play with nana/nani and each other.

Monday   5 December 2011

This day Sachin was dropped off in the evening by his dad at his nana/nani home. Sachin was to have a sleep over as that day his dad was going to Ottawa (on his way to a day meeting in Toronto next day).    Sitara  was to go with her dad to Ottawa and stay night at a hotel where her mom was to join them late after work.   That is her mom would travel from Deep River after 9.00 pm and join Sitara & her dad at the hotel. Sitara had a doctor’s appointment for allergy tests. So her mom will take her to the doctor. So all in all, Sachin came for the sleep over . He enjoyed nana/nani company and played with them . All had good dinner and was as usual a gentleman ( gentleboy). There is so much love in him and politeness -which is rare in a kid who is only 2 1/2 year old.   He likes to converse and please his nana/nani. His favourite sentence is “I love you nana. I love you so much”     or “I love you nani . I love you so much”.

He is very regular with his activities. He keeps his time for sleeps or naps .

On Tuesday 6 December 2011 he woke up early at about 8.00 a.m – had his milk and then joined in with nana/nani for breakfast. He would not start his breakfast until a place was made for his sister, Sitara . He wanted all things (Sitara’s placemat, plates etc)  all on the table and a chair was kept booked for her. he love shis sister and would remember her for all things.   He did the same thing for luncha nd dinner.   What a loving brother that Sitara has.

After breakfast, nana/nani took him to Pt Alexander library for his FEN play time. He had a great time  there – topped by a puppet show on a Ginger Bread cookie  -which he (and other kids) enjoyed immensely.

His food intake at all times (breakfast, liunch and dinner) was excellent and without fuss. He seemed to be enjoying eating with his nana/nani.

Well his mom got delayed coming back to Deep River/Mackey from Ottawa  -so it was decided that Sachin will spend another night at his nana/nani home and both his mom & Sitara would go to Mackey directly without stopping over at Deep River.   Sachin will be picked by his mom next day at 8.00am and then he &7 Sitara will be ferried to their  baby-sitter’s home in Deep River . From there Sitara will take (after breakfast at her baby-sitter home) a school bus to go to her junior KG school  at Mackenzie Community School. Note: Sitara had her allergy tests done in Ottawa and it was found that she is allerigic to all types of nuts and peanuts particularly.

Friday 9 December 2011

This day Sitara’s nana/nani got call from her mom that she received a call from her school that Sitara was not feeling well – a bit of continouos coughing . So nana/nani went to the school and picked up Sitara in the morning about 10.30 am. and she stayed at nana/nani home. She rested well at home and in the evening was joined by Sachin & her dad for dinner – before going back to Mackey.

Saturday 10 December 2011

Nann/nani went to Mackey in the afternoon to look after the kids as their parents were going out on a Social in the evening  – a dinner program by their dad’s workplace. It ws decided to go to Mackey to avoid kids to have to travel from Mackey to Deep River (to nana/nani home) and then back. Nana/nani stayed the night – the kids called it sleep over.   They loved it and enjoyed being with their nana/nani. Wonderful kids – very polite, considerate and   playful kids. They wanted   nana read books   (children story books) to them prior to going to sleep.  Both nana/nani read books as each had one grandparent at one time.

On Sunday (11 December  2011) Sitara came to Deep River  with nana/nani as it was her swimming class – this would avoid her mom to go from work and bring her back to swimming class.   In the afternooon, Sitara got an opportunity to see on TV a movie on Wizard of Oz -with both nana/nani. She enjoyed it much . She just has seen a play (by Deep Rivers artists) last week at Childs Auditorium   at Mackenzie Community School -so she was fresh with all the dialogue and action.   However she did say that she liked the “Strawman”at the live play  better (because he was more clumpsy ) than the one in the movie.

At swimming, at about  finish time for her class, Sitara got heavy cough and spilled the mucous into water    – so the swimming pool was evacuated and closed for disinfection.

Note: During next Sunday, Sitara did well in swimming   (her last session for the season) and met all the requirements to move to next level. So during next session, she will be in the next level of swimming.

On this day, nana/nani got a sort of testimonial ( thank you note) from kids mom on her Facebook page.  Below is verbatim from nina’s facebook entry. And the response from nana/nani  .

Nina Facebook Quote:

” Thank you yo my wonderful parents. You have totally been there for us this week especially but always. With all the doctors appointments, meetings in Toronto, Sitara sick today and the help you are giving us on the weekend!!! We are so lucky to have you here with us!!! xo   “
Response
” We have tremendous fun with the two wonderful, polite, playful and conversationalist grandkids. Both Sitara ( 4 1/2) and Sachin (2 1/2) are so similar in their conduct and care.

Grandparents (nana/nani)”

Thursday   16 December 2911
This day it was planned to go to Mackey to celebrate Nina’s  (Kid’s mom) birthday -which was yesterday – and could not be celebrated on Wednesday as Nina was working that day and would come home late.
Also during the day on Thursday,  it was found that kids’ baby-sitter would be away that day – so nana/nani volunteered to pick Sitara up from school at the end of the day and after that go to Mackey. This way Sitara could be home early .   So she was picked up at 3.50 pm from school . However at the class when Sitara got ready to come home – her nana  found that she had no gloves.  Upon enquiry it was found that she had left the gloves at the school  Kiddie Park. So all three (Sitara, nana/nani) trundled up to the Kiddie park – where nani went out to the grounds and looked for the gloves.  She found these after a bit of walking & looking.  The red   gloves were retrieved.
After that all went to Mackey. Sachin was home with his mom as she was not working on this day.
Both nana/nani played with the kids before dinner – all waiting for their dad who had not arrived from work. This day he got delayed due to emergency at work. and thus dinner was started without him but  he joined in at the tail end of the dinner time. After that all celebrated Nina’s birthday – nani had prepared a chocolate cake (as requested by Sitara) . Te cake was with lighted candles – kids sang “Happy Birthday”  to their mom and helped cut the cake and all had a piece.
Nina is the first born. She arrived exactly nine (9)  months after nana/nani arrived in Canada . It was a surprise  but our loving daughter chose to be born at that time – which was very transformative to nana/nani and she gave us a reason to adopt Canada well – never letting   nana/nani to miss home -so far away.

Diwali – 2011

This year’s Diwali was  special to the family as our newest granddaughter was visiting Deep River from Toronto first time after her arrival on this good earth . She was to celebrate her first Diwali & a  New Year with the family.

Both her cousins (Sitara- 4+ year old and Sachin- 2+ year old) were excited to learn that Maya will be coming.   The East Indian Community of the Renfrew County had a Diwali program organised for Saturday 5 November 2011 at Lions Hall in Chlak River, ON.  Apart from spending quality time with the family at home  in Deep River,  Maya & her parents (Shannon & Sunir)  also  participated in the said Diwali program .   Some 120 people (East Indians and their friends of other ethnic background) attended the program. It was a lovely and lively program – with delicious Indian food (catered by an Ottawa Restauranteur),  dances by community children  (on Bollywood songs), a magic show by a local magician (Steven Anthony) and at the end –   Gujarati Gurba and Punjabi Bhangra dances joined by public.

During this program , Maya’s Bapuji (that is me) and Sitara & Sachin’s nana (that is me) gave a small talk on Diwali and recited a poem.  The poem was   written by one of my colleagues, Gerhard, on a Cyber Forum who ihas this excellent  ability to craft poems on social issues.

Below is my speech as written for delivery at the Diwali function on Saturday 7 November, 2011 – which was delivered – of course with some   ‘as-lib”  modifications but by and large  keeping it intact in content and substance.

Speech

East Indian Community of Renfrew County – Diwali, 2011 Celebration- Saturday 5 November 2011 at Lions Hall, Chalk River,Ontario

Hi  Everyone,
This year’s Diwali was on Wednesday 26 October.   I would like to wish  you all a Happy Diwali & a very successful New Year.
Those who do not know me, my name is Pravin Shah and my family and I are residents of Deep River since 1986. I am retired from employment since 2007. Since my retirement, we have been gifted with three (3) loving grandchildren – 2 here in Deep River and our newest one in Toronto.

Diwali is a time for rejoicing and renewal as we celebrate the triumph of good over evil and light over darkness.   Diwali is an auspicious festival celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs and Jains all over the world   with great enthusiasm and excitement.  Diwali is also popularly known as  ” The Festival Of Light ” .

The Hindus celebrate this festival to commemorate the homecoming of Lord Rama after 14 year-long exile and his victory over the mythological demon Ravana. The Sikhs observe Diwali to celebrate  the release in 1619   of  Guru Hargobind Ji.  For Jains, this festival carries the essence of spiritual upliftment because it marks the achievement of Nirvana or Moksha by Lord Mahavira, the last Tirthankara.

Spectacular lights, firecrackers, irresistible traditional sweets and sending gifts to dear ones mark the celebration of Diwali.
On Diwali families gather together and share variety of food and sweets. It is also common to send Diwali greeting cards to family members, relatives and friends. Recently however it is becoming more popular to send Diwali eCards or Diwali SMS.

The Diwali also culminates to the Hindu New Year.

In Canada, we celebrate Diwali with gusto.

In the Renfrew County (our own area), Diwali represents more than merely a religious festival.   It represents and is a tableau of Indian culture, brotherhood and warmth by all peoples (of different religions and background) who have migrated from India. This also include peoples who have migrated from other parts of the Indian sub-continent.

Diwali Festival is getting recognised by various national political and social leaderships in many Western countries including Canada   – which helps to generate understanding and friendship between various communities.
Here in Canada, the 11th National Diwali Celebration was hosted on Thursday, October 20 at the Canadian Museum of Civilization across from the Parliament Hill . Prime Minister Harper expressed his happiness that Diwali celebration at the Parliament Hill has grown into a truly national event.

On Diwali day – in a video message,   the President of the Unites States Barack Obama  spoke on Diwali   and wished to all those who observe this sacred holiday in US and around the world, Happy Diwali and Saal Mubarak.

In United Kingdom , Speaking at a Diwali Party, at his official residence of 10 Downing Street , British Prime Minister David Cameron said that Diwali being the festival of a triumph of good over evil and also the death of a devil, perhaps there is some resonance in understanding that the recent death of Col Gaddafi of Libya is the victory of good over the evil in true Diwali sentiments.  Cameron   later said that of all the parties he hosted, his children found the Diwali party “by far the most exciting”.

In our Canadian context, the Diwali is celebrated during Autumn months , so I would like to recite a poem reflecting the Autumnal peace  and our human spirit for resoluteness.

This poem is written by my friend Mr. Gerhard Fürst .  Gerhard is born in Germany but got his education in US. He taught almost 38 years in US and many other countries. He has sent his   greetings and best wishes for Diwali to all.

Shalom, Salaam, Shanti, Ahimsa….

The sun is shining,
but the air outside
is brisk, cold and fall-like.

Autumn has made its entrance.
The trees are showing off
their fall-fashionably colorful dream coats
Nature is splendid.
It amazes us every time.
Nature can also be daunting.
It can subdue us,
or it can elevate the spirit.

It is too nice to be inside;
so. let me attend to some
garden chores and duties to be done,
mowing the lawn,
collecting fallen leaves,
and while doing so,
thinking about the passage of time,
reflecting on life
and all of its seasons,
its surprises, its beauty,
its challenges,
even its adversity
which could subdue

and even destroy.

We need to be strong,
 within and without.
We need to be resolute,
in order to carry on,
in order to survive,
God willing…
By His good grace…

Fall is also a season of harvest.
may the fruits of your labors
be plentiful!

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome our newest granddaughter (3 Months old), Maya Jashoda Knights Shah, for her first visit to Deep River from Toronto to celebrate her first  Diwali and New Year with her cousins Sitara and Sachin Mistry   as well as with the family and the East Indian Community.

And to express our great happiness and joy,  the family has decided to make a small contribution to the Deep River & District Hospital towards purchase of capital equipment..

Thursday 6 October 2011

This day both kids , Sitara & sachin, had dental checkup .Sachin had yet not developed 4 molars.

Also Sachin went for Speech Assessment at FEN.   It is assessed that he is doing well but a hearing assessment may be useful.

Sunjay joined Sitara  at school during lunch time as the class was having a safety talk by Town  Fire Dept and others.

After lunch the both kids and parents travelled to Toronto to play with Maya (their cousin – 2 month old) and also to go to “Raas garba” dance  celebration in Toronto.    Sitara & Sachin travelled to Toronto with their parents in their Saab car.   They had great time together with Maya.

Kids also participated (along with their parents) in the Indian “Raas-Garba” function for Navaratri in Toronto on Saturday 8 October 2011.

The kids returned back to Mackey on Monday 10 October 2011 – with their mom as their dad stayed behind for his office work.   Unfortunately on the last day ( Sunday night or early Monday morning) Sachin had fallen sick with Croup.   He was treated at Sick Children hospital- taken there at 4.00 a.m in the morning .   He had to have an IV also as his heart rate were found a tad bit higher (than normal) for a  2 year old kid.

About Croup

Croup is a condition that causes an inflammation of the upper airways ”” the voice box (larynx) and windpipe (trachea). It often leads to a barking cough or  hoarseness, especially when a child cries.

Most cases of croup are caused by viruses. Those involved are usually parainfluenza virus (which accounts for most cases). Croup is most common ”” and symptoms are most severe ”” in children 6 months to 3 years old, but can affect older kids, too.

Most cases of viral croup are mild and can be treated at home, though rarely it can be severe and even life-threatening. Some children are more prone to developing croup when they get a viral upper respiratory infection.

Sachin seems to be okay. Nina will take him for checkup with Family doctor on Thursday 13 October 2011.   She took a day off on Wednesday (12 October ) to be with Sachin. Nana/nani  have not yet seen him since his return from Toronto   ( Nina is safeguarding nana/nani from any infection).   Of course nana/nani   will see him on Thursday 13 October 2011′

Sitara is with her nana/nani  since she came back from Toronto   – both nana/nani  enjoy getting her ready for her school etc.   She is so mature for her age . She is just a doll and very social and enjoys her nana/nani care.

Thursday 20 October 2011

The kids were again travelling to Toronto with their parents .   This was possible as Sachin had recovered from his previous sickness (during earlier visit to Toronto) .  They were to stay with Nina’s friend Priyanka and her husband Aman. Priyanka/Aman have two kids , the eldest a girl about Sitara’s age   and younger one is a boy about Sachin’s age. Priyanka/Aman had organised a Diwali Party for their  Deep River friends and spouses on Saturday 22 October 2011 . It was  called “Deep River Diwali Reunion”.   The kids had a lovely time and they had many kids of their age to play with.

(Unfortunately Sunir/Shannon & Maya could not participate as they had gone to Montreal – as Sunir had some business need).

They arrived back to Mackey on Sunday 23 October 2011 at about 5.00 p.m – and Sitara then came to Deep River with her mom for her swimming class at 6.00p.m at  Mackenzie pool.

Monday 24 October 2011 and Tuesday 25 October 2011, the kids and parents had dinner at nana/nani  home in Deep River.

Nina was off work as usual on Tuesday (25 October 2011).She had planned to go to Sitara’s KG class  KG in the afternoon while Sachin spent the afternoon at naan/nani place – getting his afternoon nap.  This was to discuss with young kids the Diwali & its significance but mainly work with them to make some Diwali craft. This is Canadian Diversity in culture at work. Nina found that  Sitara  interacts well with the other kids at school and enjoy being there.   Nina also told them a story, showed them some of Sitara`s outfits and had them make and decorate diyas. Everyone made such nice Diwali crafts in the class (all kids are about 4 years old).

Thursday 27 October 2011

This day the kids went to Pembroke with their parents. Nina has as usual Thursdays off from work and their dad took vacation day to be with them.   This day being New Year in Indian Calender, parents wanted to spend time with the kids . They went to visit the Hugli’s farm at teh outskirt OF Pembroke.   This si the farm where kids parents got married in August of 2004.

They had an awesome day at Hugli`s today. Sachin had a blast talking to all the animals and Sitara had a great time in the pumpkin patch! Did you know they have peacocks now?   It was cold day though sunny and clear . So they had  bundled up.   It was nice having the WHOLE farm to themselves  for the afternoon! Everyone got to pick out their own pumpkin and make Sunjay haul the wagon back to the car.. Sachin had a blast talking to all of the animals…they have peacocks now! They went berserk and spent  $100 in the Hugli’s farm fantastic gift shop  …truely the best gift shop in town!

After Hugli’s farm visit all went to Boston Pizza (in   Pembroke) for dinner – where their nana/nani joined the family.  – a real family affair to celebrate the New Year . The other family (Maya & her parents) could not join as they were far in Toronto – though all the family will meet on the weekend of 4/5 November 2011 as the local East Indian Community has organised a Diwali function on Saturday 5 November 2011 (at Lions Hall in Chalk River)   -when Maya and her parents wiil be coming from Toronto to participate and celebrate Diwali here in Deep River.

Saturday 29 October 2011

Sitara showed was a bit under the weather in the morning  . So was Sachin  – so Sachinhad to skip his gym class. On Sunday  30 October, they were both taken to Emerg. in Deep River in the evening. Sitara has ear infection in both ears – in the canal and Sachin had congestion.   Next day  is Halloween day –  hopefully they will recover enough to enjoy the  fun of   ” Trick or Treating “.

Both kids seem to have weathered their illness after taking the medicine on Sunday night . Sitara went tyo her KG clas and Sachin went to his Baby-Sitter (Jeannet). Though Sitara also goes to the Baby-Sitter from where she takes a   school bus to   & from the School , Both kids were picked up by their dad at 5.00 p.m  from the Baby-Sitter’s home and after that they came to nana/nani home – to get ready for Halloween “trick or treat” outing in Deep River. Their mom also came early from work to enjoy with them their Halloween.

They got ready – Sitara   as a princess (pink dress) and Sachin as Jack ( pirate with black outfit)  . But before they got dressed up for the Trick or Treat outing – they helped to decorate two (2) huge pumpkins that their dad had earlier (in the morning) brought    to nana/nani home. Each one decorated one pumpkin – both were diligent and enjoyed doing the decoration.   Both pupmkins were put outdoors in front .   These pumpkins were very much praised by many who had come in the evening for their ” Trick or Treat ”   fun at nana/nani home.   The kids were taken out by their parents- all went walking in the neighborhood -mostly on around the home. Later Sachin was dropped home ( after a sojourn of about 1 1/2 hours “Trick or Treating) for his supper as he was heeling hungry. Sitara continued and went far a field in the car with her parents . They came back home and had dinner and spent relaxed   quality time with thier nana/nani and also with parents.   They went Mackey much late in the evening.

Saturday 5 November 2011

This year’s Diwali was on Wednesday 26 October 2011 but was celebrated by the Renfrew County East India Community on Saturday 5 November 2011.

Both kids were excited to celebrate this year’s Diwali as their cousin (our newest grandaughter, Maya – the daughter of their ShannonMami & SunirMama) have had  come from Toronto    (with her parents) to celbrate her first Diwali & Hindu New Year .   Maya is turning to 3 months old on Monday 7 November 2011.

The other details of the Diwali program and the fun kids had at the program can be accessed from  the article ( titled “Diwali-2011”) on the website.

Maya left ( with her parents ) the Diwali party early for home so she can have her  sleep and rest.

On Sunday (6 November 2011) morning Maya got up early. She was all pleasant and charming with broad smiles and with beautiful twinkle in the eyes.   She was coddled by her Ba & Bapuji while her parents had opportunity to take time to rest.     She was placed on blankets on the living room carpet and both Ba & Bapuji played with her- sometimes with infant toys. Maya then went to sleep for 45 minutes . That was very refreshing.

Both Sitara & Sachin came over with their parents to play with Maya and also to spend time with her parents . Moreover this day (being Maya & her parents being here in Deep River) , it was an opportune time to celebrate Sunjay”™s   (Sitara & Sachin”™s dad – Maya”™s Fuva) upcoming   birthday – his birthday being on Saturday 12 November 2011- (when both Ba & Bapuji will be in Toronto -to attend an Engineering conference ”” of course also Maya & her parents would   also have returned back to Toronto after a short visit to Deep River to celebrate Diwali with the family and the East Indian Community.)

Before lunch . a ceremonial cake ( baked by Maya”™s Ba – Sitara/Sachin”™s nani), with candles (Sitara helped to place the candles on the Cake) was carried from kitchen by Sitara & her nani with birthday song  -to living room where Sunjay was sitting with the family -all having small talk about many things.   Everyone joined in the birthday celebration with song and chatter, It was also recognised that it was also Maya”™s 3-month birthday   (on 7 November 2011) and  also of Maya”™s Ba”™s   birthday (on 15 November 2011) .

The cake was taken to the Dining Room table  – candles were blown off ( with a wish)   by Sunjay and cake was then cut by Sunjay helped by both Sitara and Sachin.

The cake was eaten at that time by Sitara & Sachin – the adults felt to leave eating cake after the lunch.   This was done once the lunch was over. All had great time during lunch . Both Sitara & Sachin also enjoyed the lunch – even though   having eaten the cake before.       Maya was a well behaved baby during lunch   and kept all enthralled by her cooing and smiles.

After lunch, there were gifts for all from the grandparents (for Sunjay”™s birthday , for Diwali to all , for celebrating motherhood to Shannon &   for being Faiba ( Maya”™s  paternal auntie) to Nina .

Sachin left early to go to Mackey with his dad   as he needed   to have his afternoon nap.   Though he did not want to go but it was necessary for his rest.

Sitara had more time to spend with Maya – first she was alone without   Sachin being here and second that her   swimming Class at Mackenzie Pool   was cancelled for some reason.   Sitara usually goes for her swimming class on Sundays   at 6.00 p.m     Sitara spent this time to play with all but more with Maya. She laid besides   Maya on the living room carpet caressing   and coddling Maya her .  She also played with Maya with the infant toys .   At one time when Sitara was alone in the living room -laid along Maya- Sitara entertained Maya with nursery songs (the songs that she knew). That was very touching – love oozing out from a 4 year old girl for her infant cousin.

Sitara and he mom left about 7.00 p.m for home to Mackey . Sitara was heavy hearted – she did   not want to go but being   a 4 year mature girl she did go though a bit reluctantly.

Firday 11 November 2011

Both nana/nani went to Toronto as nana was attending an Engineering conference (Chapter Leaders) and an Award Gala for some selected prominent Professional Engineers . Nani  however   (after attending a Chapter’s 50th Anniversary dinner on Friday at Toronto Airport Marriott hotel) went to kids Mama/Mami home to stay with their ShannonMami   -as she was alone with Maya – their SunirMama havoing gone to California on business.

Both nana/nani returned back from Toronto  on Monday 14 November 2011   and on the way to Deep River-   stopped over at Mackey in  the evening (about 6.00 p.m) – by that time   kids were home (Sitara from her KG school and Sachin from his Baby-sitter) – both picked by their dad from the baby-Sitter’s home in Deep River.

The kids were having dinner when nana/nani arrived. After dinner both kids played with their nana/nani -with toys and also reading of books.   Nana/nani left about 7.30 pm as that was getting nearer to kids’ sleeping time.

Well on Tuesday  15 November 2011 – kids came to nana/nani home – Sachin with his mom as she was not working that day and Sachin did not go to the baby-sitter’s home . Sachin usually do not go to baby-sitter’s home on the days when his mom is not on work duty . Sitara came to her nana/nani home after her KG school – being picked up by her dad from the baby-sitter’s home.   This day was their nani’s birthday and kids celebrtaed the ocaasion joining the adults in the family  .   A sumptuous dinner was had – kazoos were trumpeted by the kids , candles on the cake were blownoff and the chocolate cake was cut and enjoyed by all.   Kids participated as usual with gusto.     Both Sitara and sachin has also prepared a birth day greeting card for their nani.   Sitara (now only 2 months in her 4 year- old KG class) have started writing -and she spelled out and wrote on the card her and her brother’s name as signatories . Sachin prepared   a star-studded flower as decoration -all helped by his mom.

After the aprty , Kids had quiet time to play with their nana & nani . They then went home to Mackey with their parents.

Thursday 17 November 2011

Sachin had come with his  mom to nana/nani home at about lunch time. He was relaxed, very  friendly and played a bit with his nana/nani before lunch . After lunch, he was tired and went for his usual afternoon nap.   While he was napping   ( and being looked after by his nani) , his mom and nana went to the Pine Beach in Deep River  to collect a couple of bucketful of sand from the beach for their sandbox in Mackey  home ( sandbox to be placed in the Sun Room for winter playing).

This day it was a Teacher/Parent meeting day at Sitara’s school (Mackenzie Community School, Deep River) – so her parents went to school at 4.00 pm to meet with her teacher  Mrs. Cox.   Hence , her nana went to pick   Sitara up at her baby-sitter’s home.     Sitara has good report.

After dinner, there was play and fun. Their dad went to his Jiu-Jitsu class.    Jiu=Jitsu   is a martial art, combat sport, and a   self -defense  system that focuses on grappling  and especially ground fighting.

Kids went home to Mackey at   about 8.30 pm with their mom.     It is always fun to play with both the kids . They are very constructive and they show love for both their nana & their nani   and want to play with them.   They   really like  playing slide (sliding on nana’s body   – nana sitting on the sofa and stretching his legs out) . Both take turn – climbing the side black sofa using their purple chair as climbing step (one of the two  small kid’s chairs that nana/nani have for the kids to play in Deep River) – and then jumping on nana’s belly and from there sliding down to the carpetted floor  .

Saturday 19 November 2011

Both Sitara   & Sachin had gone in the morning   for their gym classses at DunDonald Hall (in Petawawa) with their parents  .   After gym and lunch at Petawawa, Sachin went to Mackey with his dad (for his afternoon nap)   and Sitara went with hor mom to a birthday party (Sitara’s friend Savannah) in Deep River.   As told by her mom, at the party Sitara did ice skating without any need for stability support .

After the party, Sitara & her mom came to nana/nani home and they were joined by Sachin & his dad (they came from Mackey –    Sachin was in the car as he was not brought into the house   )  – all were going to Pembroke to enjoy a play called Alladin.  The play was at the Festive Hall in Pembroke.  They left for Pembroke at about 4.30 pm – Sitara giving hug to her nani & nana.

Tuesday 22 November 2011

This day Sachin went for music class in Petawawa. This was his last class for the season.  There were only two(2) kids for this class.  His mom took him there and after the music class they came to nana/nani home in Deep River, where they joined in lunch and in the evening Sitara   came from her school -having picked up by her dad at her baby-sitter’s home (after the school bus drop off) . All had dinner together and kids  had time to play with nana & nani after dinner.   They left for Mackey at about 7.30 p.m – their nanahad gone to play bridge( card game) at 7.00 p.m.

Thursday   24 November 2011

Sachin to go to Ottawa with his mom for 1) teeth examination & 2) for hearing tests.

This is what his mom said on her Facebook

” At the Ped. Dentist`s then off to CHEO…Ottawa, why do u have snow and closed exits? At least I have a wonderfully happy little man with me today!!”

On second posting the following quote by his mom on her Facebook

” Somehow my little Sachin knows who Santa is…(not from me) and very sweetly asked for what he wanted while smiling and sitting on Santa`s lap today. Sachin is soooo kind…he also asked for things for his sister, mommy and daddy! I love you little man…keep your sweet loving heart!”    .
