Here is the thing! – re: my grandson Sachin

Here is the thing.

Well,   Sachin was having a   sleep-over at our house in Deep River on Friday   04 October 2019 while his parents and Sitara scooted off to Ottawa   – as Sitara was attending/visiting  the Carleton University   Faculty of Engineering and Design  next day on Saturday.

We had fun night  enjoying the company of our 10 year old grandson   (Sachin) , enjoyed with him a game of Monopoly   while watching the   Indian TV program called   ” Kaun Benega Crorepatti    ”  in Hindi       — which   translates   to ” Who will become a millionaire   “.       He was well behaved , focused and keen in his game as well as following the TV program   (with English captions given) .   He quietly went to sleep at around 10.30 pm .

Next morning   ( on Saturday ) he   got up ,  freshened   up and   had his breakfast – without any adult interference or help.   He knows where to find his daily needs at his nana/nani place.

What impressed me about him is that right on time – like being on cue –   he disengaged himself from his favourite TV show at 11.00 am and started getting ready for his ice hockey practice .  He put on all necessary   clothing for skating , pads & other gears    including  securing it with tapes where necessary.

So we trotted off to the Deep River Arena at about 11.10 am – him pulling his big bag (with skates, helmet , gloves & other skating gears) out of the house   . He loaded the bag on to the car – saying to his nana that he can handle all that.     Of course his nana helped carrying his Hockey stick and water bottle

At arena, he pulled the bag into the arena building and found the room where he is supposed to put his skates   on and get ready for his practice game.   Well finally he started getting ready -all   by himself – not giving his nana any grief .   However , he did  get stalled   when   trying to put and tying his skates on.   He had realized that though his nana tried to help him tie the skates but really  cannot as there was the need for pushing the skate flaps under the protection pads and then tying the lace tight.   His nana had never done that.   However, as always there are good people around so his nana asked a young man ( who I guess was a skating coach )     to help out   . He did so and had skates on properly . After that he handled himself and put on other gears such as his helmet and gloves   before getting on the   ice.

When the practice   was   over   – Sachin was in the change room   and by himself   removed his skates, gloves , clothing etc   and put these well in the big carry bag   and hauled that to the car and loaded it onto the car by himself.   All so relaxed and without any stress. Nana was really impressed by his independence   and   responsible behaviour.

Now compare the above story to another 10 year old boy many  moons ago. This boy had gone on vacation   (during school break) to his nana/nani home in Thika from Mombasa . It was exciting visit but the young man had not much to do in those days.   One day he wondered off away from main area of residence to a   store room – all by himself as quietly as he can.    There he sneaked into items in the store   room   – just being curious or being naughty !.   There he found   a pair of scissors . Well what one do with a pair   of with a scissors.   The young man became creative   and what he did was interesting.   Luckily he did not cut or damage any of his nana/nani stuff.     But he did was rather funny yet not very responsible. He   cut his hair on his head – trying to be a barber . He felt so happy and thinking he achieved something .

He then came out of the store area and come over to the main residence and his younger uncle   (   ShantiMama ) saw him – he must have had a great laugh   The younger boy looking  ridiculous .

However,   ShantiMama   was concerned – so he took the young boy to a real barber in town -to at least   trim the hair as best as can be . That’s the end of the story.

Who was that young 10-year old boy   many moons ago in Thika.     Of course that boy was Sachin’s nana (that is of course me)  – who was kind of a bit naughty or adventurous without much thinking .  In those days , kids had not much planned structured activities and not much responsibilities except to play   and find activities – self made -to pass time.

What a change one can see in two generations   !

Letter to Editor – An Article titled ” Bill 21 – is it racist or standing for secularism “

The following article was submitted to North Renfrew Times on Sunday October 13, 2019 – which can only be published in the coming weeks.

Okay – the article was publised in the local Newspaper (North Renfrew Times   ) in their Wednesday edition dated   16 October 2019 – under the title ” Expand Bill 21″.     I do not know why they changed the title – as my article has not talked about expanding Bill 21but to revise it.

—————-

Bill 21 – is it racist or standing for secularism

During the current Canadian Federal election , the subject of Bill 21 recently passed by the Quebec   Legislature   (on June 16 ) was much debated and talked about.

Bill 21 formally bans teachers, police officers, judges and many others from wearing items like hijabs, turbans, kirpans, and crucifixes in the course of their duties. It also doubles down on pre-existing legislation that requires citizens to uncover their faces when accessing public services like municipal transit and the legal system.

The bill has been met with controversy and confusion. Critics condemn the bill as legalizing discrimination against religious minorities, and proponents see it as Quebec finally making good on its claims of being a secular society.

For those of us not wearing any of the above mentioned religious   items   –   the law would not   really   be of much concern.    I personally do not believe that   It can be called racist   – as the law applies to anyone of any colour   and of any religious belief.     It ,   however, impinges on personal freedom of many citizens in our free democratic society.   That   goes against our Canadian values and tradition.

I think adults should be free to wear   any religious items they would like to in order to profess their   religious beliefs   -so long as they do not do so in order to just be nasty or to show off.

However,   the fate of Bill 21 will be decided in the courts.

However what is  rather unfortunate is   that  many kids are imposed upon to wear such religious items as they are growing up in   the Canadian society .   This is tantamount to be like child abuse.   They are not asked or given a choice   and their religious parents   just   put these kids in untenable situation ..

Because of such garb and attire or symbolism   imposed upon kids they go though school  getting bullied or they   are ignored by their classmates or schoolmates   and   experience   somewhat friendless  growth.

Many cannot take part in some or other sports or other cultural activities .   Girls are more affected than boys .  Let little girls have the freedom to feel the wind in their hair as they tear around the playground with their friends.

This is not good for them or for Canadian society.   Do we want that?

I strongly believe that there is nothing wrong in imparting religious teachings – which can be done   freely with Sunday schooling or at any time . But when the kids are in school or   other   activities – they should not be made to wear such religious garbs/items by their parents .

Once they reach the age of 16, they can choose to   wear such religious  items of their own free will and the Government or law should not stop them doing so.

I think   Bill 21 needs to be revised by Quebec and should address   this child abuse that is   knowingly imposed upon the kids by their so called religious parents.   If fact such revised bill is needed right across Canada.     God is giving us freedom and let   us not misuse it on our own kids.

When the kids grow up – they can choose to wear whatever   religious garb/items they want when working at   a public place – so long their faces and smiles are visible.

Letter to Editor – An Article titled ” Near Surface Disposal Facility (NSDF) “

The following article was submitted to North Renfrew Times for publication and was published in their   Wednesday 09 October 2019 edition.

03 October 2019

Hi

Near Surface Disposal Facility (NSDF)

Just a thought !   How come this development at Chalk River site is   still pending ?

What is the issue?     What’s the snag?   Why there is a delay in approval by the  Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission ( CNSC )?   The   CNSC’s  quiet is deafening   – to say the least !

It’s been a long while and not much has moved except the much talked about recent   CNL advertisement on the back page of recent edition of North Renfrew Times (NRT) .

Yes,   there have been a few Letters To Editor to NRT   pertaining to be about NSDF but really these were polemics   ( I would say academic polemics) about the definition of a   ” mound ” and  also about the mute point of whether CNL   can claim about many wonderful technologies developed over the   years   at Chalk River nuclear site.

Well let that be as it may be   but it seems the development is stalled.

I   may be wrong   but to my simple mind it (this proposed development)  is  a few years  late   when it should have been implemented for the good & planned development of the Chalk River site  —   impacting   the future of   the local   community and for the good of the country as a whole.

I understand that there is  so much legacy wastes lying around and scattered at various locations at the CNL site – which do present a danger ( both radiological and non-radiological ) to habitat.   Further, CNL site is old and most existing buildings /structures / site services may be somewhat non-code compliant and tending towards being decrepit and building structures seem to be mostly of wooden construction and could be ” tinder ” and thus posing a definite fire hazard.

Added to that –   many of these structures and services are somewhat contaminated  by  radioactivity – the  site being a nuclear site operating nuclear research reactors and related facilities over many years.

So it is in the interest of the safety and environment that   such a facility is built   which would allow engineered operation , monitoring over long period   and   be able to take corrective steps in time , if a need arises .

While I am fully in favour,  in principle , for the development of such a facility at the Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) site – it is troubling to note the proposed site  is in close proximity of the Perch Lake  close to Ottawa River ( and the Perch Creek which facilitates the flow to the Ottawa River ).

I believe that the facility will be designed to withstand a very high seismic event   but am not sure about the details .   It  may be safe when fully completed   but would the seismic event be managed when the facility is part complete ?      I understand that that   it will take a long time for the facility to be fully complete.

I am not sure   that   unusual climatic conditions such as   cloud bursts   are   part of the design criteria.   I  assume that this and other   environmental   conditions are considered  when designing the facility .

All this can be assured to public   if   CNL or CNSC or AECL   come out and   step up to the plate   and identify or announce whether the siting, the detail design and operation of the said facility   –   all have been professionally reviewed by identified independent   and qualified reviewers . Their (the professional qualified reviewers ) concurrence may contribute   towards the much awaited approval by CNSC.

I really would not worry about the name   given to the facility.

This Week – 2 (01 October 2019)

This Week

1)   The 9-day Navratri festival starts on Sunday 29th September to Monday 7th October .

The  ”  navratri ” festival  started with a bang here in the Renfrew County East Indian Community  – with a  get -together for Garba night at the Lions Hall in Petawawa on Saturday 28th September 2019.   Many people attended the function – all attired in fancy dresses and smile on the face.   There were many young ones in the crowd -all having a jolly time.

The organizers worked   hard and very professionally – preparing a good meal as well as having appropriate music to go with  the Garba dancing . One can feel the vibrations and excitement of all those who participated in the Garba.       Many Thanks.

Navratri is a major festival  in Hinduism held in honour of the divine feminine.

Navratri is dedicated to all the nine forms of Goddess Durga.

Navratri festival  often ends with the Dussehra (also called Vijayadashami) celebration on the 10th day.

For more information about what 9 colours people wear  during   9 days of Festival

2)  On Wednesday 02 October 2019 is Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday anniversary.

Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday (Gandhi Jayanti or Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti) is a gazetted holiday in India on October 2 each year. It marks the anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi’s birth on October 2, 1869.

For us who are residing overseas – this anniversary is very important as it reminds us of our Indian values in life about peaceful and constructive role   we should play wherever we reside – and community participation for everyone’s benefit is critical to propagate equality and respect for each other.

We should also remember Mahatma Gandhi’s teachings which influenced many people around the world  — such as Martin Luther King Jr. in USA and  Nelson Mandela in South Africa in their peaceful and non-violent struggle against racial injustices and colonial domination.

3) Last week we show a wonderful  “Howdy Modi ” spectacle in Houston USA.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India was accorded a rousing welcome on

Sunday September 22 , 2019   when he arrived at the crowded NSG stadium to address the  Indian- American community along with US President Donald Trump.

More than 50000 Indian Americans gathered there for this function .

I kind of liked the theme –   ” Shared Dreams Bright Futures “.     In life , we all should dream of success but we should also have in our heart our community where we live – to share our good fortune with them. That will invariably bring  bright future for our next generation.

This week – 1 (20 August 2019 )

To     ;—         deepem@googlegroups.com

The following was posted   for   information by e-mail to Deep River and Area East Indian Group on 20 August 2019.

A couple of heartwarming events happened this week.

1)   We had a wonderful picnic at Petawawa Point last Sunday on 18 August   .

Many of our East Indian group – from Deep River to Pembroke – participated in the picnic.

The weather God contibuted a very nice weather .

The organisers ( specially Usha & Subhash Sutradar   – a nice committed couple) did a wonderful job – had a picnic place laid out so well – all in shade but also open.

So much food – all testy yet nutritious .     Was pleased to see lots of kids – especially the young ones . All relaxed and playing freely around.

While picnic started at around 2.00 pm and finally ended after 7.00 pm – still bright sun around.

I am sure all enjoyed the camaraderie ,   chatter, and having fun and being outdoors in a sunny day.

Many thanks to all for being relaxed and contributing to food and camaraderie , and being generally with smile and cheers.   That is what life is about.

2)   Finally we all heaved a sigh this Tuesday 20 August   – when Indian scientists successfully maneuvered the   Chandrayaan-2 spacecraft into the lunar orbit.

India’s Chandrayaan-2 spacecraft entered lunar orbit on Tuesday   in a small but important step on its journey towards the moon.     Precisely at 9.02 a m Indian Time

Chandrayaan 2 lifted off on July 22, onboard Isro”™s most powerful launcher, the 640-tonne rocket Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle-Mark III (GSLV-Mk III), from the country”™s only launch site Satish Dhawan Space Centre.   The mission will send an orbiter, lander and rover to explore the moon’s south pole. Chandrayaan-2’s Vikram lander is expected to land around Sept. 6.

This is a moment of pride for all of us when we see the   scientists   in our ancestral home coming of age.

Indirectly , this has an impact on our lives here in Canada and elsewhere   – as Indians are contributing towards the future .

I am a Canadian but when I see a step forward in human progress – and more so by Indians – that gives me so much   happiness   and comfort.

regards
