What a Spin?

                                                                                                                                          March 14th 2003
What a spin?

Tick Tock!   Tick Tock! The clock is ticking.

The war drums are drumming and Apaches in the air.

All the battleships are lined up. Army is on the move all

around the enemy country. But then the “Coalition of the Willing”

is spinning the wheels. The newly minted Super Power is huffing

and puffing but alas! Cannot make up its mind as looking for

some other ragtag army (like in Afghanistan) to carry the burden.

The United Nations, NATO and EU are the first victims while the   dictator is having a chuckle! What a predicament!

The terrorists are gathering all over or that”™s how it seems!

The borders around the Super Power are controlled like never before

and duct tapes and plastic sheeting are coming to the rescue.

Are Americans ready to carry the burden single-handedly to remove this maniacal dictator?
France, Germany and Belgium joined by likes of Russia and China
are spinning for peace. This is all and good but who is hearing the anguish nd cry of Shias & Kurds and other Iraqis who have seen

no peace but torture and pain from this dictator.

Tick Tock!   Tick Tock! The clock is ticking.

The war drums are drumming and Apaches in the air.

The world seems in derision and a torturous spin!

American Initiative to disarm Iraq!

                                                                                                                                                                                                      February 16th 2003

American Initiative to disarm Iraq!

Time has come for a decisive action by America to disarm Iraq. Any “dilly dallying” would allow the dictator to fuzz issues and hide all his Weapons of Mass Destructions (WMDs). Then there is also that possibility that peace movements in the West will be mobilized (especially in Europe) to confuse the Americans for coalition support.

This dictator has missed the boat for using his wealth for the prosperity and progress of his people and others. He is now too dangerous for the peace around the globe.

However, America needs to become bold and accept sacrifices in the battlefield. In Afghanistan they used Afghans from Northern parts to do its battles and see what a mess is Afghanistan and as yet no terrorist of name has been killed or captured. Many of these terrorists have obtained refuge in neighboring Pakistan (the country with nuclear weapons).

If the reports are correct, America wants to use Turkish troops to invade Iraq. This will be an error, as America has to send her own troops (in substantial numbers) in the field to do the right job. There would be casualties, which need to be factored in before going into the war.

If America wants to avoid American casualties, it should not go into war, as the world will be even in worse situation than now. There will be more Islamist terrorists emboldened by American cowardice. Dropping bombs from high in the sky will soften up the enemy somewhat but without active troops in the field this enemy will spread all over the Middle East, Pakistan and the world to create havoc.

War should not be a preferred policy but when situations do not allow other courses, for security and growth of humanity we unfortunately (and with disdain) need to accept the reality.

Reckoning for America has arrived and we as her allies need to provide feasible support without hesitation.

TRIBUTE TO FACILITY SPACE TECHIES

                                                                                            20 December,2002

The old Company convulsed like there is no tomorrow

Managers shifted shouting hurrah to play musical chairs

Re-organization galore! Inside out and upside down

The facility group tittered on the moves, furniture and all

Landlord cried, forking invisible money for painting and carpets

She goes this way and that way, all giggles and false smiles

All in the name of color coding and copious customer connivance

Space lady shrieked joyous shout and “secured” poor slob to a cubicle!

Space selection! Devious and dubious, brought joy to her planning

Permits issued, Oh! Never mind that cubicles transformed to cottages

The reorganized site soothed happiness with mismatch all over

INFORM website, SIMs, CAFM all bringing Geek goodies galore

Midnight ghosts of the past brought moves back to the fore, Yikes!

Space costs! Space costs! Shouted the Facility Planner with no response

She trundled on, lifting the burden stoically and strutting her poise

A tribute to the Facility Space Techies who keep customers twirling happy.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

 Grieving

Whenever we meet to offer a prayer for the dear departed one for a member of our Pembroke-Deep River Indian family, we (each one of us) mentally journey back to the memories of our own loved ones whom we lost before.

Whenever we meet to offer a prayer for the dear departed one for a member of our Pembroke-Deep River Indian family, we (each one of us) mentally journey back to the memories of our own loved ones whom we lost before.
The traditional native sharing circle of First Nations Community in Red Lake, Ontario is, I feel, a right process for us to emulate which will help us to heal more and revive good memories of our loved ones. This process I came to know from an article (Cultural Exchange P. 31) in the Summer 2002 Imperial Oil Review magazine.

The participants would gather around in a circle and pass a stone from one to another. When a person held the stone, it was his or her turn to speak or simply to reflect in silence ”“ no one else talk.   The powerful thoughts and feelings shared by participants during these moments become a healing and comforting tonic.

For the stone, I have brought a real piece from the demolition of Berlin Wall in 1990 (a gift brought by Bill Taylor of Deep River for me). This stone represents freedom, let go of fear, guilt or other emotions, looking forward to healthy and useful future and how to share happiness and comfort to others.

The fresh flowers from our garden represent the continuity of life and freshness of this life every day.
Prayers (when grieving) bring out personal incidents of our own individual losses. Sometimes painful and acute reminder of the comfort and security we received from our loved ones and many times the wonderful nostalgic memories.
This forum, I hope would help to liberate many of us from the silent suffering from the loss of our loved ones and also to remind us how lucky and fortunate we are to have shared our lives with these loved ones.

America, the Saviour

                                                                                                                                                                      November 15th 2001

America, the Saviour

Not long ago, America carried the burden for defeating the evil Soviet empire. The communists were ruthless not only on others but their own people. They destroyed civilizations and killed or uprooted millions. America took the lead to fight the communists everywhere from Europe to Korea. In the end the Soviet empire crumbled. The world is better for that.

Earlier America helped to defeat the scourge of fascism and Nazism and after that helped to lift the living standards in Europe, Japan and other countries. America was also in the forefront of helping to bring many countries to independence from colonial rule and helping these countries in their development. America remained a beacon for freedom and liberty. The world is better for that.

To day, Islamist fundamentalists and mullahs are spreading hatred and terror. In many countries of the world, many citizens are suffering from the fatwas of these mullahs. As I understand, Islam is a religion of peace but some of these mullahs are interpreting the religion to their end. Many states are autocratic and keep their citizens under tight control. Many countries are tottering on “failed state” category. The leaders are selfish, corrupt and aggrandizing wealth and power while keeping general population backward and in poverty and ignorance. The Bin Ladens and Sadaam Husseins of this world bring evil to the present world and are after destroying the modern world”™s progress by violent and terrorist means.

America has woken up now and is taking the lead to help remove this menace. It took sacrifice of some 5000 people in New York and Washington to wake this giant. We hope and pray that America will be successful and liberate millions from the tyranny of their own and from their false zombie existence. The world will be better with America”™s success.

The world needs enlightened leadership who can channel human energy for lifting the poor and miserable from their daily struggle and bring modern education, health and social services so that we do not have conditions for breeding evil. The world then will see civil societies that we all strive for, where civilized norms are practiced in daily lives. Wealth is created and utilized for human progress, education, health leading to individual freedom, happiness and well-being.

Only America can provide such vigour, entrepreneurship, innovation, commitment and leadership. America is a vibrant secular democracy. It has developed modern civilization with values of individual freedom, racial equality and religious tolerance. Americans are hard working, scientific, adventurous and progressive and not afraid to change. Their civilization is weaved from acceptance and assimilation of immigrants from many lands.

America has been an excellent ally and partner to many nations in their struggle for justice and development. We are fortunate that our country is a close and trusted friend of America.

A Citizen’s Agony

                                                                                                                                                                                                        Oct 20, 2001

A Citizen”™s Agony

These are trying times. Since WW II, the world has seen many conflicts but by and large there have been a tremendous social and economic progress all around. Many citizens of the world learnt to live together and progressed in education and understanding of each other.
September 11th 2001 will be written in the history books as the watershed when the world took few steps backwards in trust and compassion for other human beings. As ordinary citizens, we are agonized as to how to live our lives. We look at everything at a different perspective. We have questions galore! The future is so uncertain. We are not sure of the economy and of our investments. All old rules are in tethers at this time. We question all our decisions. Many times, we are also inflicted with remorse.

The Government tells us not to worry but at the same time we find nervousness in their actions. We need to develop heightened awareness as to what is lurking around the corner.
After all these years of progress, education and understanding of each other”™s culture and religion, why is such barbaric behaviour amongst us? Some time back we had Hitler, Stalin and others who were educated and sophisticated in their thinking yet their cruelty had no bounds. These days we have Bin Laden and his likes terrorizing the ordinary citizens for some unknown causes or perceived wrongs of history.
The terrorism associated with the events (and resultant torture and killings of fellow human beings) in Middle East, Palestine/Israel, North Ireland, Kashmir, Albania, Yugoslavia, and Africa are heart rending. What is happening in Afghanistan is not pretty. The terrorists have run amok. It seems the world has gone mad. So we believe!   We are made aware that life is cruel and fragile. The pain and suffering in far away lands is searing our souls.
The present event will need to work itself out. We, as ordinary citizens, have no control on the events but we need to be prepared for and bear the consequences as these may unfold. We cannot relent and we shall continue with our daily lives but more aware of our family, friends and community around us.   We need to expand our horizon and not clamp down on our activities, shopping, travels and extending our hand of compassion to fellow human beings.
All religions and cultures sing about peace and humanity but in reality evil men misrepresent these religions to achieve their evil ends. Violence begets violence! Our prayers are that sanity will prevail and violence will be extinguished. We pray that we have amongst us leaders who will take lessons from likes of Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King and while proactive to fight injustices they approach the issues with non-violent methods.   I would like to offer the following prayer, which may help, hopefully, to extinguish our agony.
Forgive do I creatures all, and let all creatures forgive me.

Unto all have I amity, and unto none enmity.   Know that
violence is the root cause of all miseries in the world.

Violence, in fact, is the knot of bondage. “Do not injure any living being.”
This is the eternal, perennial, and unalterable way of spiritual life.

A weapon, howsoever powerful it may be, can always be superseded by
a superior one; but no weapon can, however, be superior to non-violence
and love.

Jesus Christ Superstar

                                                                                                                              July 30th, 2001

Jesus Christ Superstar

My wife and I attended the musical play “Jesus Christ Superstar” on the opening night, Monday July 29th 2001. We were seated on the first row and had the
opportunity to absorb the intensity and vibration emanating from a very fine acting

by each and every actor and actress. The music and songs were superb. The play

was exquisite. I tried to get a ticket to go again but it was full house all the days.

It was a powerful play awakening the spirituality within. The message of Jesus
Christ, of humbleness, sacrifice and love, was reawakened. It is rather unfortunate

that many a times such message is forgotten conveniently by human beings.

Jerusalem, where Jesus Christ made his presence revealed, is burning these days

albeit over a hill (supposed to have houses of worship for God).

What a pity! How are we all caught in the web of the circumstances! and do not
see the truth. The powerful usually carry the day and we become mere spectators.

That seems to be the reality.

Town Watermain Break

                                                                                   July 17th 2001

   Town Vulnerability

We just had an exciting and interesting (???) experience on Monday (July 16th 2001) when the water line had broken (not too far from the Water Plant) and with that the whole Town was without drinking and potable water for almost 12 hours. This incident has brought out few areas of vulnerability to which the Town folks may be open for surprise and shock!  Water Vulnerability

It seems that one failure of a water main can cripple the whole town and leave it without water for an extended period.   It seems there is no bypass lines or loop for isolation of the area where the break may happen.

My understanding is that the pipeline is old and the where isolation valves are found these may not be working.

Pipe failure occurs even in new lines but the design of lines would allow that a section can be isolated for repairs without affecting the whole town.  Communication Vulnerability

It seems that the failure of water main was known from Monday mid-morning by the Town personnel but most of us got to know about it late afternoon.   No official communication but by word of mouth. The water break was mixed up with rumour that a Gas line (in the Town center) was also broken. Further, rumour spread that repair of water main

will take upto 3 days.

Luckily, we Deep River residents   took all that in good stride . Many people bought blue water bottles (preparedness) and others (who got to know about it) lined up at Fire Dept to obtain water from a Water tanker.   Many went to the Ottawa River (near Marina) to collect water in various forms of plastic containers in case needed for flushing of toilets.

There was sort of Carnival type atmosphere (well, Deep River residents can take it on the chin !)

The reality is that we are vulnerable to lack of official and correct Communication in times of disaster.   Town has a WEB site and also Channel 12 (on COGECO Cable TV) but I did not see any news flash on these mediums.

Are we prepared for disaster here in Deep River? Or are we vulnerable? Who is our spokes person and leader in these circumstances.

Other Vulnerabilities  I am now not sure that there may be other vulnerabilities that we may be open too.

Is Town prepared for these?   Do we have Emergency Preparedness Plan and if one is existing, was that followed during Monday”™s water main break.

I am sure if the water main had broken after office hours, the spare pipes and valves necessary

(from out of town -Pembroke) would have taken more time aand effort and repairs at night would be taxing. What would happen if such incident happen in cold winter?

 These concerns need addressing.

Jainism. Relevant for 21st Century? Wow

                                                                                                                                                                 May 15th, 2001

Jainism.     Relevant for 21st Century?       Wow.

What an exciting thought     “Jainism is a relevant religion for the 21st Century”. It”™s a dream to cherish but really, is this credible proposition? We need to be very clear as to what we believe as a relevant religion.   A relevant religion for the 21st Century would have “user-friendly” tools, enlightened leaders and excellent communication strategy.   The religion shall effuse magnetism and charisma of sacrifice and service to have impact for spiritual growth as well as be conducive for civilized living for healthy and happy lives.

The trouble starts when defining what is a healthy happy life especially when these intrude into the use of world resources (directly or indirectly) including animals, world flora and fauna as well as also the use of other living beings.

It is a given that all living beings aspire to be healthy and happy. However, this becomes difficult as fierce competition for securing better and bigger piece of the economic pie seems to be the mantra for the 21st century, which leads to behaviours, which sometimes are not considered moral and spiritually uplifting. This is complicated by the fact that the world is also confronted with all kinds of natural and man-made calamities, which add to miseries and pain.

Our world   (comprised of ourselves, family, friends, religious grouping and country) is surrounded by many known and unknown adversaries. These are who may destroy us or at best try to control us so that they manage to mould the life to their understanding and liking. This brings a lot of distress to us and our advancement is curtailed or at times terminated.   Many of us may also be in the same game as to stopping or thwarting others to achieve their rightful place so that we can advance our way of life.

Can Jainism bridge the differences or provide tools for us to manage this onslaught on our focus in life.

What is our focus in life? This needs to be determined. If we are true Jains then our focus is well defined by scriptures (to live and let live) but if we look around and examine the lives of those “ who call themselves as Jains”, we find many of these Jains are also caught in the pursuit of fame, fortune and whatever and sometimes use all and any means whether good or bad.

In broad terms Jainism is a forgiving religion. True followers of Jainism believe in forgiving and forgetting any wrongs done to them and then carry on with their lives.   That is if they are left free and alive so that they can pick up their pieces and continue in their endeavours for healthy living.   The forgiving and forgetting of miscreants is absolutely very damaging if these miscreants do not repent and correct their ways but proceed to eliminate their prey (those unsuspecting followers of Jainism). If that”™s what happens then, no religious righteousness would save the followers of Jainism and also their message would be lost.

Jainism is based on some solid principles such as detachment, diversity (or acceptance of multiplicity of views), and non-possessiveness. These are good principles provided there is reciprocity from the all those around. These principles enjoin all Jains to eschew greed, envy (jealousy), covetousness, and pride as well as a Jain is to follow right path and remain true in love and action. These actions lead to good karmas (karmas are particles which attach to souls leading to birth and death cycle) and ultimately will lead to enlightenment and nirvana. The attainment of nirvana may take many life cycles.

In the past, the society was always in turmoil as prosperity depended on power and controlling of the primary resources. The rigid tribal and feudal loyalties were necessary for survival. Many wars and conflicts were normal and thus survival was very precarious. At that time, being a Jain would help avoid getting in the midst of conflicts. The rivals, from previous knowledge, knew that Jains are pacifists (and would not fight for any loot for themselves) and as a consequence were left alone in many cases. Further, the Jain monks were able to influence some of the victors to see the folly of their ways thus encouraging peace in the land. In that sense, Jainism was a very relevant religion for the time as it helped survival for those who belonged to the faith and others as well.

This was okay when the rivals were from the area until the invasion of India occurred by the Islamists that did not care about the Jain values. They only view the world from their prisms and anyone not believing in Mohamed and Koran and further anyone worshipping idols were considered kafirs and thus were good aim for elimination.

The Jain and Buddhist Religions and values prevailed in India before the Islamic invaders came to India and made India pacifist and rulers became unprepared for stopping the carnage of India and its civilization.   During this later period Jainism (along with Buddhism) were not relevant religion for India and thus never quite captured the imagination of the masses and the rulers (local or foreign). Some of the Jains manage to survive at the periphery of society.

Jains experienced growth and flourished (in India) during years 600 B.C. to approximately 1200 A.D. providing solace and civilizational growth to many areas in India. The religion did not seem to have gone beyond the Indian Sub-continent.   This was golden age in India and many rulers became influenced by Jainism as well as by Buddhism and thus became pacifist and believing in goodness of human beings, karma theory and need to escape from continual grip of and life and death cycles.

From the year 1200 A.D or so till approximately 1800 A.D. the horrific invasion of Indian Sub-Continent by barbarians of the Central Asia and also from the followers of Islam, rendered the pacifism untenable and many people rejected these principles, which led to downfall of Jainism (along with Buddhism) in India.   The existence of Jain religion remained in few surviving temples with very small numbers of Jains in India.   The religion was not relevant for that period. For individuals, it may have helped but for collective good the religion was a disaster.

From the year 1800 A.D or so, the British (and other European powers) took control of India and slowly their civilizational progress (started elsewhere) having impact on the Indian society.   The march of times in Western societies led to world wars, weapons of mass destructions and with that also the movement for freedom and individual rights (a democratic and free civil society).   This new societal order breathed life in Jainism as well as other religions and cultures.

The human society as a whole is more tolerant of various faiths except in communist and visibly open autocratic and theological states. This is the time when revival of Jain religion can be pursued with vigour.

However to make it relevant for the 21st century, the religion and its leaders will need to reform and at times radically. Is Jainism ready for reform to suit this century?

Jainism as a religion seems “fatalism in action”.   Jainism has restrictive diet, as Jains are vegetarians. That is fine but then again Jains are not supposed to eat anything that grows below ground and further some fruits and vegetables (even though these are grown above ground) can also not be eaten. The Jains are also restricted from eating after the sunset. The daily life, career choice and livelihood are all restricted to minimize physical and non-physical violence and injury to any living being.

The existing practice of Jainism is ritualistic and appears to enslave the followers in their daily living. The Jain Sadhus and spiritual leaders are not allowed to go across the oceans. There is too much penance, pacifism and negation of things provided by nature. The Jainism seems not to provide relief and comfort to the believer and thus is now contaminated by rituals and practices from other influences, mostly from Hinduism.

The main principles of Jainism, the basis and founding theology of Jainism are jewels in terms of what is an ideal and thus suitable for an ideal world. The compassion, detachment, and being contented with the minimal worldly needs for survival (and existence) without possession of excessive material goods are principles which may lead to ultimate spiritual liberation. These principles also are critical for the sustaining development of the world. The Jains, who understand these principles, are very accommodating , non-violent and self-sacrificing. These are good principles when applied judiciously and understood by all and sundry.

If Jains remain true to their principles they will not oppose or fight back those who may do wrong to them. Forgive and Forget ”“ where do that take us? We may forgive but how can we forget. To improve future actions we need to know what transpired before and while forgiving we need to remember any injustices done and appropriate actions taken so similar incident do not happen. Our youths and we need to build character, strength, commitment and understanding of the environment around us and develop daily living such that we are strong and cannot be manipulated.

The Jain Principles, if understood properly, would liberate an individual from pain and suffering or at least make the individual understand the reason behind such suffering. The religion is very relevant in this century as it was in all centuries before for an individual but for collective good the religion can only be relevant if external environment is friendly and tolerant. If the world is full of ”˜intolerant barbarians”™ focused on power then the Jain religion cannot stand a chance in salvaging an individual nor the Jain religion.

I believe the Jain religion can be relevant in the 21st Century if reforms are made and solid educated and enlightened leadership comes forward.   The Jains as a whole need to be united in purpose, self-sacrificing and the Jain Sangh needs re-structuring so that the modern day problems can be addressed upfront rather than chafing from the back.   The way I see it, even in North America, we are creating sects and separating from each others (Digambars and Svetambars are having separate temples such as recently in Toronto) with ignorant understanding of Jainism. We need to nurture our young and upcoming generation to be humanity minded and participate and even lead movements for peace in various world theaters such as in Middle East, Kashmir, and Africa and even in Europe. The message of Lord Mahavir is very powerful but can only be understood if right personality is accepting it, assimilate it and then propagate it in practical terms. Only recent personality like this was Mahatma Gandhi and to a lesser degree Martin Luther King, Nelson Mandela and Mother Teresa.   The civil rights movement always needs Jain type personalities but we need to do more to nurture this in Jain community.

Let us examine some of the things we are purporting to be proud of as Jains when talking but refrain or are reluctant from actually following these in our daily lives.   We do need to walk the talk. We do need to develop that discipline or commitment. To make the Jain religion relevant to modern times we need to remove some of the baggage of the past

Yes, Jain Religion is relevant in 21st century if we do understand the deep and spiritual principles of the religion and are prepared to sacrifice our comfort and position for the upliftment of humanity and other living beings. High principles do not make a success but high principle applied appropriately will bring necessary changes and success as well as spiritual progress.   This will bring salvation of an individual as well as the society at large.

We are fortunate to have many persons who are committed and devote tremendous effort and money for understanding Jainism. In the present times when we are established in many corners of the world and especially in Western Countries, we have opportunities knocking   at our doors to develop proper conduct, knowledge and correct contacts (political as well as cross- religious) and thus make Jainism contribute to peace and understanding of ecology, environment and self-less service for the benefit of humanity and all living beings.

Let Lord Mahvira”™s message become the beacon for salvation for individuals as well as for the collective peace.

ELECTION AFTERMATH

                                                                                                                                                                                                                        Dec. 03, 2000

ELECTION AFTERMATH

There were three different elections in November, which have a direct bearing on our lives.

The first election was for the most powerful man on the earth, the President of the U.S.A. The outcome is still mired in the court cases. The counting and recounting of dimpled, pregnant and hanging chads in Florida have not yet resulted in the decision. The stock market does not like uncertainties. The market is now showing accelerated signs of down trending which may have the direct effect on our well-being. Many of us who were thinking of retiring a bit early will now have to reassess the future.

The second election was at the Municipal level. In Deep River we had 13 candidates for 7 Councillor positions. The Town Council now does not have any Councillor who is currently working or even retired from AECL, the main employer for the residents of the Town. This is maturity!   The impact of this will need to be watched. Only time will tell!

I believe that the Town Council should establish an opportunity for the Town residents to have a say in any major decisions it makes. This citizen input is necessary from the inception of any ideas. I would like to submit to the new Council to open the Council proceedings (at half way time) for a 10-minute period to allow any citizens attending regular Council meetings to put forth their views on issues of concern. This would, I believe, encourage citizens to attend regular meetings as they can participate in the deliberations (albeit with proper decorum). These citizen input and views can then be deliberated in the next Council meetings (as part of a regular item on Council agenda ”“ Citizens Input).

The third election that concerns us is the recent Federal Government election. All candidates of different parties were very supportive of the development of CNF at AECL.

This is the only unanimous statement I heard in the All Candidates meeting at the Mackenzie High School auditorium. Now that we have spoken and bucked the trend and elected our Member of Parliament, we need to hold our breath, wait and see, as to in which direction the wind is blowing (for funding of the CNF). I expect that the Federal Government will proceed to support the development of CNF for the advancement of Canadian research in nuclear science. If not then, we may have to continue coasting for many years to come.
