Canadian Peacekeepers

Canada is known for valour in peacekeeping duties. Our troops help many countries to maintain peace and also to fight evil ones. Our peacekeepers are aware of the real risk in these duties but are committed to safeguard our values and democracy.

Canada has lost some 117 peacekeepers over the years (refer to Ottawa citizen Sunday October 5, 2003) in peacekeeping duties.   The total includes the two brave heroes (Sgt. Robert Short and Master Cpl. Robbie Beerenfenger) who were killed recently in Afghanistan.   The mission in Afghanistan is fraught with danger. There are more landmines in Afghanistan than any other country in the world.

Afghanistan has not yet stabilized since the removal of the Taliban government and Al-Qaeda (the Islamist terrorist group). The remnants of these are targeting the Afghan forces and international peacekeepers. Our peacekeepers are helping Afghan Government to defeat these evil forces.

Canadian Forces Base in Petawawa is home to many of these Canadian soldiers. Over last few years, some of these fine young men & women have made Deep River their home. They are our friends and neighbours.

Our hearts go out to the families and friends of Sgt. Robert Short and Master Cpl. Robbie Beerenfenger for their tragic loss in a far away land. Our prayers are that their sacrifice will bear the fruits of success in defeating the terrorism and bring stability to the world.

We shall not forget!
