Deep River for Sale - Cartoon
I am rather bemused by the cartoon re: “Deep River for Sale” in the NRT issue of January 21st. The cartoon seems to bring out the underlying fear and guilt in the community for so called ‘dipping into’ the public purse. The largest single employer in the area no doubt is C.R.N.L. Those of us who are associated with this Canadian Institution are quite hard working and providing an useful service to the nation by understanding the atom and developing technologies for betterment of humanity.
There are many institutions and industries supported by the public purse. So called private enterprise (both local & foreign) is also supported by the public funds varying from grants, tax breaks and even outright bailing out the failed banks.
In the modern world, there is a continuing need for probing into atoms. This need is crytallised during 1940s and is even more pressing into the coming years. The research into the atom provides inexpensive and sure source of electricity, provides isotopes and other technologies for medical and industrial uses and in future years will provide means for preservation and growth of abundant food supply for multiplying human populations around the world.
This research into the atom will provide key to engineered opening of our presently frigid northern frontiers for future population settlement. The pioneers like Dr. Lewis had vision and that has made Deep River an important and historic town in Canada.
‘ Peace thru Atom ‘ should be our motto and we in Deep River should be quite proud and be able to continue and contribute to the Canadian nation’s vision of progress through peace. The contribution of public funds to research and development will pay off manifolds as horizons of knowledge are opened by our dedication and vision. If such public support is found wanting, then our emminent scientists and engineers will find their niche in the U.S.A. or other countries.
Deep River has a place in history. 100 years from now, I visualise tourists coming to Deep River to visit homes of emminent Canadian scientists who would have brought Canada and the world technologies for progress through peace.
Ask yourself, are you not working hard to do just that.
